The authors develop an agent-based model of the market where firms and consumers exchange products. Consumers in the model are heterogeneous in terms of features, such as risk-aversion or owned assets, which impact their individual decisions. Consumers constantly learn about products’ features through personal experience, word-of-mouth, or advertising, update their expectations and share their opinions with others. From the supply-side of the model, firms can influence consumers with two marketing tools: advertising and pricing policy. Series of experiments have been conducted with the model to investigate the relationship between advertising and pricing and to understand the underlying mechanism. Marketing strategies have been evaluated in terms of generated profit and recommendations have been formulated.

Opis:
The ability for manufacturing organisation to be responsive to changing market conditions is imperative for sustainable market competitiveness, and enabling self preservation. Responsive behaviour requires the incorporation of not only robust sustainable manufacturing process chains, but the functional capacity to facilitate reconfiguration and adaption. Manufacturing process chains require process monitoring and condition based monitoring systems to achieve high accuracy manufacturing systems, sustainable production capability, and resource efficiency. The focus of this research is aimed at developing a novel data interoperability architecture to enable the creation of reconfigurable process monitoring systems. To achieve reconfigurable process monitoring capability an information communication paradigm known as agent based design is reviewed, and an emerging agent based standard known as MTConnect is also reviewed. Through this research a novel data interoperability system is developed and defined to enable dynamic data acquisition for reconfigurable process monitoring. A case study is carried out to demonstrate the validity of the architecture to achieve multi data stream unification. This case study demonstrates the ability to actively condition monitor a HURCO VM2 three axis CNC machine dynamically, through the measurement of machine energy requirements and vibration, which are examples of process variables associated with condition based machine monitoring.

Computing applications such as metaheuristics-based optimization can greatly benefit from multi-core architectures available on modern supercomputers. In this paper, we describe an easy and efficient way to implement certain population-based algorithms (in the discussed case, multi-agent computing system) on such runtime environments. Our solution is based on an Erlang software library which implements dedicated parallel patterns. We provide technological details on our approach and discuss experimental results.

Evolutionary multi-agent systems (EMAS) are very good at dealing with diffi cult, multi-dimensional problems. Research is currently underway to improve this algorithm, giving agents even more freedom not only to solve the problem, but also to make decisions about the behavior of the algorithm. One way is to hybridize this algorithm with other existing algorithms to create the Hybrid Evolutionary Multi Agent-System (HEMAS). Unfortunately, such connections generate problems in the form of unbalanced agent energy levels. One solution is to use an agent energy redistribution operator. The article presents three different proposals for such redistribution operators, compared them with each other and selected the best based on the results of numerous experiments.

The production of automotive rear-axle drives is a complex process. This is due to many involved process steps, factors and interdependencies between processes, materials, means of production and individuals acting in this environment. In general their effect on product variations is not fully comprehended. Hence, a holistic analytical model is only possible in parts of the production. In this paper a modular approach is presented to make the production more flexible and enable it to react faster on product variations. This is achieved by a Cognitive Production System (CPS), which is based on accumulating, storing and processing of process knowledge so that it can be applied to similar cases. Through the combination and interaction of Cognitive Tolerance Matching (CTM) and Agent-based Systems the performance of the CPS is enhanced. The work discusses the set-up of such a CPS for the production of automotive rear-axle-drives with the focus on the failure state agent.

In recent years, due to the growing importance of eco-design and tightening EU regulations entrepreneurs are required to implement activities related to environmental protection. It influences the development of methods and tools enabling the implementation of eco-design into practice, which are increasingly used by modern information technologies. They are based on intelligent solutions that allows them to better match the requirements of designers and allows for the automation of processes, and in some cases they are able to do the work themselves, replacing designers. Details are useful in areas that require calculations, comparisons and making choices, which is the process of eco-design. The paper describes methodology of pro-ecological product design oriented towards recycling, based on agent technology, enables the design of environmentally friendly products including recycling. The description of the methodology was preceded by a literature analysis on the characteristics of tools supporting eco-design and the process of its development was presented. The proposed methodology can be used at the design stage of devices to select the best product in terms of ecology. It is based on the original set of recycling indicators, used to evaluate the recycling of the product, ensure the ability to operate in a distributed design environment, and the use of data from various CAD systems, allows full automation of calculations and updates (without user participation).

Opis:
The Internet and Internet search engines have revolutionized the way in which we search for, and integrate information into our daily lives. One of the problems with general Internet search engines is the diversity of contexts queries can assume. Therefore, the construction of context-restricted search engines designed for use within a specialized domain has been proposed (S. Lawrence, 2000). The objective of this article is to suggest a model for a collaborative, personalized meta-search agent system for the virtual manufacturing enterprise in the context of resource location and integration across scope of the extended manufacturing enterprise. The key differences between the proposed model and general search engines are (1) the ability to personalize the search task according to an individual user need, (2) the utilization of similar search sessions through partner collaboration at an information retrieval level, (3) leveraging on existing search services available on the virtual enterprise extranet and (4) autonomous behaviour through the use of intelligent agents. The perceived benefits of a such search agent system for the virtual enterprise are: (1) Enabling a consistent and uniform view of business entities through improved access to information, (2) Simplified access to operational data, (3) Effective access and retrieval of organizational model elements and (4) Improving data location and sharing between trading partners providing a platform for tighter process integration between trading partners. These benefits are critical for effective decision making in a collaborative engineering process followed by the differing entities in a virtual manufacturing organization to ultimately enable final product realization. An evaluation strategy for the COPEMSA system presented is then briefly discussed, metrics for evaluation of focused crawlers and justification for development and implementation of the search system proposed. Finally, this article concludes with remarks about the model presented and future research to be undertaken.

When considering tax reporting, taxpayers have an individual attitude towards the risk of being caught evading taxes by the tax authorities. This attitude is interdependent with how this inherent risk is perceived. We propose to analyse this phenomenon through a risk perspective by adding a risk attitude and corresponding perceived probability of being caught evading. In this paper, we study the dynamics of tax evasion under risk perception and attitude, and the consequent propensity of imitators to evade or to comply. Under this proposal, we conduct our experiments through a multi-agent based simulation. Simulation results suggest first that the risk attitude, in conjunction with perceived risk and its consequences are the main reasons to guarantee a low level of tax evasion. Secondly, results also demonstrate a non-linear impact of tax rate, investment interest rate and fines which is especially interesting and non-intuitive.

This paper presents an agent‐based model of banking sector, which includes three kinds of heterogenous agents – households, borrowers and banks. Households provide funds to the banking sector via deposits and are changing their bank of choice stochastically. Borrowers are main source of demand for liquidity in this system, which they utilize for a risky undertaking, that may not succeed, thus defaulting on a loan. And finally banks act as an intermediary between two previous agents and manage their simple balance sheet. Agents interact with each other, establishing a time‐varying equilibrium, that is able to receive an endogenous macroeconomic shock and return to the equilibrium, which may not be in the same place or may exhibit different characteristics depending on type of the shock. The simulation introduces shocks to the three variables, namely minimal reserve ratio, probability of default and capital adequacy ratio. The work also compares drawbacks and advantages of agent‐based models to the commonly used equation‐based models, such as dynamic stochastic general equilibrium models.

Opis:
Aim: Money velocity data for the United States show that there is a decline in all of the broad money aggregates in recent decades. This points to a sustained demand deficiency element. Can consumer heterogeneity be the cause of this declining trend? The aim of this paper is to find an answer for this question.   Design / Research Methods: To achieve our aim we use Agent Based Modelling (ABM). In our model, the agents are heterogeneous consumers with different spending propensities.   Conclusions / findings: We show that heterogeneous consumers with different spending propensities alone puts a downward pressure on money velocity. This pressure is coupled with a sustained worsening in the wealth distribution. We observe that as money accumulates in the hands of agents with the lowest propensity to spend, money velocity keeps declining. This also puts a downward pressure on nominal aggregate demand and hence a deflationary bias on the general price level.   Originality / value of the article: This paper shows that heterogeneity of economic agents should not be ignored and that ABM is a very powerful tool to analyse heterogeneity.   Implications of the research: The implication for policy makers is that the demand deficiency associated with the fall in money velocity will persist until the worsening of wealth dispersion comes to a halt.

Opis:
Aim: This paper aims to describe an approach to develop a simulation model for investigating regional energy markets. Therefore the so called Cellular Approach is combined with the approach of Agent-Based Modelling. Design / Research methods: The model is built as a bottom-up approach for integral load management. Thus, supply factors such as limitations in generation are integrated directly and display flexibility. Thereby each market participant has its own economic interest. By the use of specific behaviour patterns and learning effects each agent in the model can act individually. This enables the market model to simulate how actors behave in changing situations.  Conclusions / findings: The model shown in this paper provides an alternative to considerations of energy supply systems via equation-based optimization models. The combination of these two approaches enhances to observe two central aspects of the German energy turnaround, decentralisation and the consumers changing role at the energy market. Originality / value of the article: The Cellular Approach offers potential benefits for integrating renewable energy sources in regional power supply. Often discussed on a technical level, this paper focuses on the economical side of this topic. Moreover, differing to other research activities usually using optimization techniques, an Agent-Based Model is formulated to simulate a regional energy market. In the combination of a supply system primarily based on renewable energy sources and enhanced with different types of energy storage it is possible to simulate a supply system of the future.

Opis:
Our research objective is to design a system to support legal decision making using the multi-agent blackboard architecture. Agents represent experts that may apply various knowledge-processing algorithms and knowledge sources. Experts cooperate with each other using the blackboard to store facts about a current case. Knowledge is represented as a set of rules. The inference process is based on bottom-up control (forward chaining). The goal of our system is to find rationales for arguments that support different decisions for a given case by using precedents and statutory knowledge. Our system also uses top- -down knowledge from statutes and precedents to interactively query the user for additional facts when such facts could affect the judgment. The rationales for various judgments are presented to the user, who may choose the most appropriate one. We present two example scenarios in Polish traffic law to illustrate the features of our system. Based on these results, we argue that the blackboard architecture provides an effective approach to modeling situations where a multitude of possibly conflicting factors must be taken into account in the decision making.
