In wastewater treatment, aerobic granular sludge (AGS) technology is a relatively new alternative to the activated sludge method. The biogranulation of biomass ensues when appropriate environmental conditions in a reactor are ensured, and one of the factors determining this is the organic loading rate (OLR). As a literature review suggests, the optimal values of OLR for AGS technology are in the range of 2.50–7.50 g COD/(dm3∙d), the aim of the work detailed here was to evaluate the impact of powdered ceramsite on biogranulation in two Granular Sequencing Batch Reactors (GSBRs) in which OLR was equal to just 2.10 g COD/(dm3∙d) (R1) and 1.0 g COD/(dm3∙d) (R2). The research was carried out in laboratory scale with using synthetic wastewater containing different concentration of organic compounds. In the course of the research, a more intensive process of biogranulation was noted in reactor R1, and mean diameters of granules on the last day of experimentation were 962 and 274 µm for R1 and R2, respectively. While the organic loading rate equal to 2.10 g COD/(dm3∙d) could allow granule formation, the results also pointed that lower food-to-microorganism (F/M) ratios favour biogranulation. This parameter was indirectly affected by the application of powdered ceramsite, because the powdered material improved the sludge sedimentation properties (average values of SVI30 being 30.1±12.8 and 36.9±10.9 cm3/g). The result of this was more-limited leaching of biomass from reactors (with average values for MLVSS at 4.37±1.23 and 3.03±0.67 g/dm3).

To intensify biogas production during anaerobic stabilization of organic matter in sludge, pretreatment is applied. The effect of pretreatment of excess activated sludge (AS) and excess aerobic granular sludge (GS) on biogas productivity (BP) and composition was investigated. The sludge was pretreated with homogenization (6,500 rpm for 0.5 min (H0.5) and 1 min (H1.0)) or ultrasound disintegration at 20 kHz (50% amplitude for 2 min (D50%_2.0) and 4 min (D50%_4.0), and 100% amplitude for 4 min (D100%_4.0)). BP of AS of GS without pretreatment was 603.3±5 dm3/kg TS (793.4±7 dm3/kg VS); that was 200.6±4 dm3/kg TS (480.8±6 dm3/kg VS). With disintegration, the BP of AS increased by 7.8% (650.4±10 dm3/kg TS) (D50%_2.0) and 16.1% (700.6±11 dm3/kg TS) (D100%_4.0), and that of GS increased by 7.0% (214.0±5 dm3/kg TS) (D50%_2.0) and 16.0% (232.8±5 dm3/kg TS) (D100%_4.0). With homogenization, BP increased by 2.0-3.0% (AS) and 1.6-3.2% (GS).

The endek industry produces low-biodegradable wastewater, which is very difficult to treat using the biological methods. For this reason, this study was aimed at improving the quality of wastewater for endek textile wastewater using the combination of ozone oxidation process as pretreatment and anoxic-aerobic activated sludge. The ozone reactor volume amounted to 3L and the applied ozone dose equaled 0.05 mg/minute. The BOD/COD of endek wastewater increased to 0.38 after ozone treatment and the application of anoxic-aerobic activated sludge treatment. The anoxic-aerobic experiments were conducted in batch process and consisted of activated sludge. Conventional anoxic-aerobic treatment can reach color and COD removal of 30% and 32%, respectively, without pre-treatment. The ozone pretreatment can increase color and COD removal up to 76.6% and 86.9%, respectively. On the basis of the effluent standards of textile wastewater quality, COD, BOD5, and total ammonia (NH3-N) parameters have met the quality standards.

Proces biologicznego suszenia prowadzono w tunelu suszarniczym o pojemności 240 dm3, wyposażonym w czujniki do pomiaru wilgotności i temperatury powietrza wlotowego i wylotowego oraz do pomiaru temperatury kompostowanych odpadów. W badaniach wykorzystano tlenowy osad ściekowy i organiczną frakcję stałych odpadów komunalnych o dużej wilgotności początkowej. Uzyskano 50% obniżenie zawartości wilgoci suszonych materiałów.
Experiments of biodrying were performed in the laboratory scale using a horizontal reactor of 240 dm3 of total capacity equipped with sensors to measure: temperature and humidity of composting biomass and temperature of inlet and outlet air. In the investigations a mixture of biodegradable municipal waste of high moisture content and aerobic sludge were used. The results obtained showed 50% decrease of moisture content of dried material.

Various article which indicating the Aerobic granular sludge (AGS) instability, particularly in prolonged phase operating duration become a significant obstacle to its implementation. Generally, prolonged the operation period will lost its stability that can degrade performance effectiveness. As AGS stabilization in hydrodynamic shear force and resisting mass transfer resistance within the reactor generally defined or evaluated by microbial community, bioactivity, extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) structure and granular aspect. The aim of this research in order to illustrate the EPS formation on AGS which is preserved at 4°C in sequencing batch reactor (SBR) by sewage for eight months. The effective of granulation method and redevelopment of AGS stability by particular pressure produced with several hydrodynamic shear force and mass transfer resistance which controlled by low organic loading rate (OLR) between 0.26 and 0.81 kg CODs/m³ d with 1.33 cm/s of superficial air velocity (SAV). The confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDX) were implemented to notice the evolution in composition of EPS that revealed the intermolecular interaction helped the aerobic granule stability as seed to achieved the performance of EPS on stability of AGS.

W ostatnich latach są prowadzone badania nad granulacją biomasy w warunkach tlenowych zarówno w skali laboratoryjnej, jak i technicznej. Granule tlenowe to zwarte, sferyczne zbiorowiska mikroorganizmów, powstające w wyniku samorzutnej immobilizacji. Biomasę granulowaną wyróżniają bardzo dobre właściwości sedymentacyjne, długi wiek osadu oraz możliwość symultanicznego usuwania biogenów w strukturze granuli, co pozwala efektywnie oczyszczać ścieki w pojedynczym reaktorze. W pracy przedstawiono informacje o formowaniu, morfologii i strukturze gatunkowej granul, jak również przytoczono przykłady zastosowania tlenowej biomasy granulowanej do oczyszczania ścieków, w tym zawierających wysokie stężenia związków azotu czy związki toksyczne. Technologia granul tlenowych przedstawiona została jako atrakcyjna ekonomicznie i środowiskowo alternatywa dla systemów opartych o klasyczny osad czynny lub błonę biologiczną. W pracy zaprezentowano dane o instalacjach z granulami tlenowymi w skali technicznej na świecie oraz przedstawiono możliwości zastosowania technologii w warunkach krajowych.
Recently an extensive studies have been carried out on aerobic granular sludge technology in both laboratory and technical scale. Aerobic granules are compact, spherical microbial consortia created by a spontaneous immobilization. Amongst their advantages are a very good settling ability, long biomass age and simultaneous pollutant removal in the granule structure that enables full biological treatment of wastewater in a single reactor. This review outlines up-to-date information on granule formation, morphology, microbial structure as well as on the applications of aerobic granular sludge technology for wastewater treatment including the treatment of high-nitrogen wastewater with a low COD/N ratio and wastewater of high toxicity. Aerobic granular sludge technology is presented as both environmentally and financially attractive alternative to wastewater treatment systems based on activated sludge or biofilm. This paper also reports on already existing full-scale installations in world and seeks to explore the potential of aerobic granular sludge within the Polish conditions.

In this study, we performed the qualitative analysis of exoproteins during granule formation in the presence or in the absence of cations. The staining of thin granule cryosections showed that nucleic acids, proteins, polysaccharides and calcium cations were the dominant components of the granules. Proteins are the structural components associated with calcium ions. We determined changes in the proteomic profile and tightly bound extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) of the slime. The exopolymeric matrix containing the proteins was extracted using the Dowex resin method. Proteomic profile was analysed by SDS-PAGE method (sodium dodecyl sulphate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis) using Coomassie blue staining in the samples of the aerobic granule matrix formed in the presence of multivalent cations and compared with that of the aerobic granules cultivated without cations. The results indicate that the granule matrix is predominantly composed of large and complex proteins that are tightly bound within the granular structure. The tightly bound extracellular polymeric substances (TB-EPS) may play a role in improved mechanical stability of aerobic granules. In the supernatant fraction of the sludge, only a small amount of free proteins in the medium molecular mass range was detected. The protein with high molecular mass ( 116 kDa) produced in the reactors with added Ca2+. Ca2+ had a considerable regulatory influence on production of extracellular proteins during aerobic granulation.

The sludge management of many wastewater treatment plants in Poland has not been properly solved yet. The exploiters and designers often have to cope with the dilemma of choosing the method of processing and neutralizing sewage sludge. The method discussed in the article is only one of the options that fully fits in the trends of implementing good practices in the management of sewage sludge. It is a technologically and economically effective as well as environmentally friendly process. It contributes significantly to minimizing the amount of sewage sludge and allows the production of organic fertilizer instead of waste. The work discusses the quality of sewage sludge after autothermal thermophilic stabilization (ATAD). The results of investigations pertaining to the reaction of sludge, dry mass, dry organic matter, content of biogenic substances, calcium and magnesium compounds and heavy metals were analyzed.

This paper presents a study on the evaluation of digested sewage sludge during the process of Autothermal Thermophilic Aerobic Digestion (ATAD), taking place as a three-tank process at a municipal waste water treatment plant in Luban, Poland. ATAD installation was manufactured by FUCHS Enprotec GmbH Mayen-Deutschland. Over the period from June 2006 to February 2010 sewage sludge digested by tha ATAD-Process was examined. The hydrogen ion exponent was measured in every tank. The results obtained indicated changes in the composition of the digesting sludge at successive stages of the process. Over the study period the ATAD-installation was in both a two- and a three-stage process. pH of sludge under study during the process of the thermophilic stabilisation changes and its value grows significantly, with the installation working in a two-stage arrangement from 6,63 to 7,99, and when the installation was operated as a three-stage system from 6,60 to 8,14. The results collected were subject to the statistical analysis. The paper presents conclusions drawn from the study and own experience.

In the paper, the results of studies on changes in the concentration of selected polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the reject water coming from aerobic stabilization of sewage sludge process were given. The sewage sludge samples originating from a treatment of municipal wastewater treatment plant and an industrial coking wastewater treatment plant were investigated. A technological study was conducted using a municipal sewage sludge (control sample) and a mixture of municipal and industrial sewage sludge simultaneously. Aerobic stabilization of sewage sludge process was carried out for 21 days. The concentration of PAHs was determined at the beginning of the experiment (day 0) and in seven-day intervals: after 7, 14 and 21 days. The initial concentration of PAHs in the reject water coming from the municipal sewage sludge was over 44 g/dm3. Industrial sewage sludge was heavily loaded with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. In a reject water of the mixture of municipal and industrial sludge, the initial content of PAHs reached over 5200 g/dm3. During aerobic stabilization of sewage sludge, a decrease in PAHs concentration in reject water was observed. After 21 days of the experiment, the decrease of the sum of analyzed PAHs was in the range of 62–98%.
