Opis:
The purpose of the work was testing the kinetics and water vapour adsorption rate for multilayer biscuits considering the type of fill and its composition. The tests demonstrated that type of multilayer biscuit fill had effect on buiscit sorptive properties during storage, and degree of this effect depends both from fill composition and water activity of the environment during storage.

Opis:
The main purpose of this paper is description of the mechanisms governing the adsorption process of organic substances (such as polymers and dyes soluble in water) and inorganic substances (i.e. heavy metal ions) on the solid surface in the presence of synthetic surfactants of various ionic nature (anionic SDS, cationic CTAB and nonionic Triton X-100). The following polymers were applied: polyacrylamide, poly(ethylene glycol), poly(vinyl alcohol) and poly(acrylic acid). Moreover, the mono-, di- and triazo dyes with acidic, reactive and direct characters were used. Metal oxides – both simple (alumina, zirconia, titania) and mixed (double: silica-alumina, silica-titania and triple: alumina-silica-titania), as well as activated carbons obtained from biomass and peat were applied in the role of adsorbents. The effects of solution pH, ionic character of adsorbate, its molecular weight, elemental composition of the solid, its acid-base properties and textural structure, were determined. The understanding of the phenomena occuring at this type of interface is extremaly important for the effective control of colloidal suspensions stability, which is essential for practical applications. The formation of mixed adsorption layers composed of polymer-surfactant, dye-surfactant or polymer-surfactant-metal ion complexes results in many cases in a significant modification of the surface properties of solids, which is manifested not only by the changes in amount of bound adsorbate, but also by the changes in the structure of electrical double layer. The analysis of the obtained results indicated two main mechanisms of the surfactants influence on the adsorption process of organic and inorganic substances in colloidal systems containing a highly dispersed solid. The first one is the formation of polymer-surfactant, dye-surfactant or polymer-surfactant-metal complexes through both hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions, which show different affinity to the adsorbent surface. In most of the examined systems, these complexes were effectively bound at the solid-liquidinterface, which resulted in the adsorption increase of polymer, dye and heavy metal ions. The second important mechanism is the competition of surfactant molecules and other adsorbates for the active sites of the solid surface (the components of mixed adsorbates had the same ionic character). As a result of these two processes, mixed adsorption layers with a specific structure were formed, which determined the stability of the colloidal suspension.

Tin dioxide (SnO2 ) is an n-type semiconductor and has useful characteristics of high transmittance, excellent electrical properties, and chemical stability. Accordingly, it is widely used in a variety of fields, such as a gas sensor, photocatalyst, optoelectronics, and solar cell. In this study, SnO2 films are deposited by thermal atomic layer deposition (ALD) at 180°C using Tetrakis(dimethylamino)tin and water. A couple of 5.9, 7.4 and 10.1nm-thick SnO2 films are grown on SiO2 /Si substrate and then each film is annealed at 400°C in oxygen atmosphere. Current transport of SnO2 films are analyzed by measuring current – voltage characteristics from room temperature to 150°C. It is concluded that electrical property of SnO2 film is concurrently affected by its semiconducting nature and oxidative adsorption on the surface.

Opis:
The paper presents systematic studies on influence of state of dynamic adsorption layer (DAL) induced at the rising bubble interface on time-scale of the bubble attachment to quartz and mica surfaces immersed in pure n-cetyl-trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and mixed octanol/CTAB solutions of different concentrations. It was found that in the case of pure CTAB solutions, the influence of DAL on time of bubble attachment and the three-phase contact (TPC) formation (tTPC) strongly depends on solution concentration. Generally, two solution concentration regimes were distinguished – low and high - for which different degree of solid surfaces hydrophobization was observed. It was determined that for low concentration regime the solid surface is only slightly hydrophobized while for high regime, hydrophobicity of the solid surface is much higher. Consequently, wetting film rupture for low concentration regime is governed by electrostatic interactions while for high concentration regime significance of these interactions is much smaller. As a result, the DAL influenced the film rupture in these two regimes in a quite different manner. For mixed n-octanol/CTAB solutions it was found that CTAB molecules presence is necessary condition for wetting film destabilization. Moreover, thanks to the developed approach, allowing control of initial adsorption coverage over the bubble surface (independently on concentration), it was proved that constant adsorption degree of CTAB molecules at the bubble surface in the mixture, leads to identical times of the TPC formation.

Opis:
The paper presents fundamentals of a simple physicochemical method (SPMD) and analysis of results obtained when the method was applied for detection of organic contaminations (surface-active substances SAS) in samples of environmental and industrial waters. The method is based on measurements of variations of air bubble local velocities, which can be significantly changed in presence of surface-active contaminants. Lowering of the bubble velocity is a consequence of a motion induced dynamic adsorption layer (DAL) formed over surface of the rising bubble. The DAL formation retards the surface fluidity and the bubble rising velocity can be lowered by over 50% when the bubble surface is completely immobilized. We showed that the SPMD is a very sensitive tool (detection limit even below 1 ppm) for detection of various kinds of surface-active substances (ionic, non-ionic) in water samples. On the basis of results obtained using precise laboratory set-up, an accuracy of the SPMD is discussed. Moreover, effect of inert electrolyte addition on the bubble velocity lowering and value of detection limit of the SPMD is discussed. Simple approach, enabling quantitative analysis of the surface-active contaminants in samples collected, based on “equivalent concentrations” determination, is proposed. Results obtained for industrial (Jankowice and Knurow coal processing plants, Jaslo Refinery channel) and environmental waters (Wisloka and Ropa river) are used for detailed analysis and critical discussion of advantages and limitations of the SPMD.

Opis:
Motion of gas bubbles in aqueous phase (either clean water or solutions of surface-active substances) is a phenomenon of great practical importance. Gas/liquid contacting is one of the most common operations in the chemical and petrochemical industry and mineral processing In particular in mineral industry, for all kind of flotation processes it is the main act responsible for the success of the entire technology As a result, properties of the liquid/gas interfaces are considered as a one of the most important parameters, determining the outcome of industrial applications and engineering processes. These properties can be modified by surfactants which adsorption (molecules accumulation) at the interfaces leads to the decrease in the interfacial tension and modification of the hydrodynamic boundary conditions. Description of a single bubble motion in wide range of flow magnitude (Reynolds numbers) is not trivial and many attempts have been undertaken to quantify a bubble behavior in liquids. This paper presents a short overview of the current “state of arts” on physics of the bubble motion in liquids and the elaborated models, describing motion of the bubble formed in liquid phase. The comparison of the theoretical models predictions with the available experimental data is presented. It is shown, moreover, that the bubble velocity can be used as a very sensitive tool for detection of organic contaminations in environmental water samples.

Opis:
In the first part of this article, a mathematical model of conservative and passive pollutant propagation in one-dimensional flow of ground water (including advection and adsorption processes) has been presented. Basing on laboratory studies of pollution concentrations on a model for measuring adsorption and adopting the numerical solution for this mathematical model, adsorption parameters kI and n were also cal-culated (for non-linear function describing this process). In the second part, taking advantage of the calculated values of these parameters of adsorption, empirical re-lationships subjecting these adsorption parameters on both those characterising an aquiferous layer (competent diameter d10, spatial ground porosity p) and ground wa-ter flow (water level or pressure line slope of ground water) were worked out. At the same time, the values of pollutant concentration reductions as a result of adsorp-tion both from parameters characterising ground medium (competent diameter d10, spatial ground porosity p), ground water flow (pressure line slope I) and estimated adsorption parameters (k1, n) have also been worked out. At the end of this article basing on the empirical equations for adsorption parameter values, the calculated values of pollutant concentrations have also been calcu-lated and compared with the measured pollutant concentrations on a physical model.

Opis:
The bioavailability of toxic heavy metalsfor organisms depends mainly on the soil physicochemical properties, i.e. type and granulometric composition, pH value, redox potential, individual fractions content and microorganisms presence. The addition of artificial fertilizers rich in humic substances or polyacrylamide soil flocculants may also affect the content of easily absorbed heavy metal forms. Due to their chelating properties, the added substances can bind metal ions in the form of complexes characterized by low mobility in soil environment. As a consequence, the immobilization process takes place, which is a desirable phenomenon for organism health. The aim of the study was to determine the structure of electrical double layer formed on the kaolinite surface in the mixed system of cationic polyacrylamide and lead(II) cations. The influence of cationic PAM presence on the Pb(II) ions sorption on the kaolinite surface as well as heavy metal ion addition on the polymer adsorbed amount on the same clay mineral were studied. The adsorption and electrokinetic properties of studied kaolinite/CT PAM/Pb(II) systems were determined based on the spectrophotometric study, zeta potential measurements as well as potentiometric titration.
