Opis:
The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of synthetic dyes removal from aqueous solutions with the use of silage from common maize Zea mays L. as a biosorbent. Two dyes were used as adsorbates: cationic Basic Violet 10 (BV10) and anionic Reactive Black 5 (RB5). The silage from common maize Zea mays L. originated from the Department of Agrotechnology and Plant Production Management, University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn. Before experiments, the silage was dried at a temp. of 60°C for 12 h and then sieved through a sieve with mesh diameter of 0.25 mm. The scope of analyses included determinations of: the effect of biosorbent dose on the course of adsorption process, optimal time of dyes adsorption, and correlation between type of dye and effectiveness of the adsorption process. The effectiveness of RB5 and BV10 adsorption from aqueous solutions onto silage was analyzed based on a correlation between the quantity of adsorbed dye Q (mg/g d.m.), and its equilibrium concentration C (mg/dm3). Results obtained were analyzed with the use of four sorption isotherms: Freundlich, Langmuir, double Langmuir, and Redlich-Peterson. Poorer fit of experimental results to the model was achieved only in the case of Freundlich isotherm. The remaining three models were very well describing the results. Owing to the presence of negative functional groups like e.g. –COOH and –OH in silage, it has a negative charge in aqueous solutions. This has a beneficial impact on the effectiveness of sorption of positively-charged cationic dyes. In turn, electrostatic repulsion of a negatively-charged surface of a biosorbent and anionic dyes exerts a negative effect on sorption effectiveness. The maximum sorption capacity of silage determined for the cationic dye BV10 was ca. 180 mg/g d.m. and was significantly higher than the sorption capacity assayed for the anionic dye RB5 - ca. 80 mg/g d.m. In comparing the achieved results for the sorption of the analyzed dyes RB5 and BV10 onto maize silage with the effectiveness of dyes sorption on other biosorbents, it may be concluded that the waste maize silage displays very good sorption properties and may be successively applied for dye removal.

Opis:
The purpose of this work was to show the effects of heating up of mudstones rock samples, on their pore structure and especially on their specific surface BET. Porous structures of both – raw and partly heated samples – were measured using nitrogen adsorption method at low temperature i.e. boiling temperature of liquid nitrogen. Adsorption and desorption isotherms obtained for these samples were similar and they could be classified as type II according to IUPAC classification (Sing et al. 1985). Adsorption testing was conducted on clay-mudstone rock samples from Ordovician, Silurian and Carpathian Flysch layers. Sample selection was based on mineral content analysis outcome from quantitative X-ray analysis. The main selection criteria was calcium carbonate content, due to the fact that theoretically they do not undergo any transformations below 550°C, it turned out, however, that they might occur at much lower temperatures. At least 30 adsorption measurements were taken for each sample, totaling about 120 adsorption measurements. Cumulative curves were obtained together with pore volume distribution functions using BJH (BarrettJoyner-Halenda) (Barrett et al., 1951) algorithm from the desorption branch using Halsey’s statistical layer thickness equation and Faass (Faass, 1981) correction and also specific surface measurements (BET). Analysis of the obtained results allow us to conclude, that all samples should be put through the 0.5 mm sieve before analysis to minimize the error associated with its heterogenity. Later, after the sample has been preheated and Nitrogen vented in SmartPrep apparatus, it has to be cork sealed to eliminate secondary moisture adsorption. The consequence of preheating of a rock sample even at 65°C is the increase in its Vitrinite Reflectance by 3%, but after preheating it at 425°C, VR increases even by 500%. After adsorption analysis it was concluded that all the samples – regardless of whether their BET, change with temperature was positive or negative – showed local minima in 130–190°C and 360–425°C, and local maxima in 65–105°C and 250–320°C which phenomena should be examined in detail in further research, in order to analyse both physical and chemical processes present in similar trend in all analyzed samples.

An adsorber in which sorption processes occur is one of the key components of an adsorption chiller. Precise real-time monitoring of and supervision over these processes are particularly important to ensure their proper execution. The article describes the experimental stand used for the measurement of the adsorber’s operating parameters and analyses pressure measurement uncertainties, taking into account the impact of the temperature on the test system filled with the adsorbent in the form of silica gel, while concurrently considering the influence of other factors (e.g. the environment, the A/A, and A/D conversion, or data processing) on measurement uncertainties. A complex analysis of uncertainties was carried out, including the results of the statistical analysis of the measurement data obtained from long-term experimental tests of the object and the uncertainties of the pressure measuring chain by the type B method, involving the consideration of interactions between the system components and the temperature impact on the propagation of uncertainties. As part of the analysis, the characteristic stages of the data collection and processing operations related to the sampling rate and measurement intervals were separated. The article presents the prototype test stand and original pressure measurement system for the verification of a single-bed adsorber working below 10 hPa.The novel construction of a single-bed adsorber was used as a test object. Furthermore, in this paper, the developed algorithm of the research method implemented in the system was discussed and positively verified.

Opis:
The needles of the Aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis) (PA) are very abundant in the forest of the National Park of Tazekka (Ta-za-Morocco) and are unexploitable. Moreover, they constitute a potential danger because they facilitate the outbreak of wildfires. To solve this problem, we have considered turning these needles into a biomaterial that could be used as raw material for different uses, such as wastewater treatment. The biomaterial of the Aleppo pine is obtained from its needles which are harvested in spring, dried, cut, crushed, and sieved. The powder obtained is analyzed before and after the extraction of essential oil. The physicochemical and spectroscopic analyses show that this biomaterial is porous, hygroscopic, slightly acidic, moderately moist, and not very conducive. Its average density in the anhydrous state is 0.6. It is rich in carbon (79.91%) and oxygen (18.91%) in the form of aromatic compounds and ketone imprints; thus, relating the presence of cellulose, pectin, lignin, and hemicellulose. Its composition in mineral elements (Na, Mg, Ca, K, Cl, S) is deficient. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis of the oils extracted from the needle powder relates that it is a complex mixture of bioactive compounds such as mono-terpenoid α and β-pinene hydrocarbons. These results show that our biomaterial can be used as an adsorbent in wastewater treatment and the extracted essential oils can be used in the pharmacological, agro-food field.

Opis:
This article focuses on discussing the adsorption process of phenol and its chloro-derivatives on the HDTMA-modified halloysite. Optimized chemical structures of phenol, 2-, 3-, 4-chlorophenol, 2,4-dichloro-, and 2,4,6-trichlorophenol were obtained with computational calculation (the Scigress program). Charge distributions and the hypothetical structure of the system HDTMA-modified halloysite are among their key features. The above-mentioned calculations are applied in order to explain adsorption mechanism details of chlorophenols on the HDTMA-modified halloysite in aqueous solutions. The results of electron density distribution and solvent accessible surface area calculations for phenol and chlorophenols molecules illustrate the impact of chlorine substitution position in a phenol molecule, both on the mechanism and the kinetics of their adsorption in aqueous solutions. Experimental adsorption data were sufficiently represented using the Langmuir multi-center adsorption model for all adsorbates. In addition, the relations between adsorption isotherm parameters and the adsorbate properties were discussed. This study also targets at explaining the role of meta position as a chlorine substituent for mono-chloro derivatives. Given the above findings, two possible mechanisms were utilized as regards chlorophenol adsorption on the HDTMA-modified halloysite, i.e., electrostatic and partition interactions when the chlorophenols exist in a molecular form.

Surface and structural properties of thermally and chemically modified mineral adsorbents (originated from Dunino near Legnica) were characterized on the basis of low-temperature nitrogen adsorption isotherms. For the purpose of comparison, one mineral adsorbent from USA was also characterized. Structural parameters were evaluated by using Brunauer, Emmett and Teller (BET), as well as Gregg and Sing [alfa s] methods. Pore size distributions were determined by the Barrett, Joyner and Halenda (BJH) method with a Kelvin-type relationship proposed by Kruk, Jaroniec and Sayari. The mineral adsorbents from Dunino were found to possess relatively well developed mesoporous structures (as manifested by the relatively large specific surface areas and the pore volumes) and no micropores. They may be of utility in the adsorption of larger molecules from liquid solutions but do not seem to be attractive for gas adsorption applications.

This paper reports data on the statistical film thickness for nitrogen at 77 K, argon at 87 K and benzene at 298 K on siliceous adsorbents. These data were obtained on the basis of Broekhoff's and de Boer's (BdB) theoretical considerations for the capillary evaporation of the adsorbate from mesopores. Adsorption isotherms for MCM-41 materials were used to demonstrate that the t-curves obtained from the BdB theory for the capillary evaporation lead to analogous pore size distributions as those obtained by the Kruk, Jaroniec and Sayari (KJS) method. The aforementioned t-curves can also be used for the t-plot and ?s-plot analysis to evaluate the external surface area, micropore volume and volume of primary mesopores of nanoporous adsorbents.

Nitrogen adsorption isotherms at 77 K measured in the relative pressure range form 8x10[-6] to 0.98 for three mineral adsorbents (from Dunino near Legnica in Poland) with chemically and thermally modified surface properties and comparatively low specific surface areas are presented in a tabulated form and analyzed. An accurate measurement of these isotherms in a wide pressure range for properly prepared mineral adsorbents allows for using them as the standard nitrogen adsorption data. These data can be utilized to evaluate the micropore volume, mesopore surface area and total specific surface area, as well as the surface properties of porous mineral adsorbents, by using one of the comparative plots, i.e., the [alfa]s-plot or the t-plot.

Experimental results are presented on the adsorption equilibria of oxygen over zeolite molecular sieves 13X which may be used in the separation of CO2 from flue gas streams. It is found that oxygen is the weakest adsorbing species among the main components of a dry flue gas. It is also concluded that, over a range of pressures between 0 and 1 bar, the selectivities are very high. Of the two adsorbents studied ZMS 13X Grace has clearly better separation properties for mixtures of N2, O2 and CO2 than its Molsiv counterpart.

The removal of heavy metals from aqueous solutions using walnut shells was investigated. The effects of pH, contact time, initial metal concentration, adsorbent concentration, and co-ions were studied in synthetic solutions. Metal uptake was found to be dependent on the initial pH of the solution; the removal rate increased upon increasing pH, showing the highest affinity at pH 5–7. The amount of metal removed improved with increasing initial concentration. Increasing adsorbent dosage enhanced removal efficiency, but reduced the amount absorbed per unit mass of walnut shells. The presence of co-ions suppressed the uptake of heavy metals, divalent ions having a more negative effect than monovalentions. The adsorption of Zn, Cd and Ni onto walnut shells was found to fit Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. The results obtained in the tests with mining waste leachate showed the potential use of walnut shells for the removal of heavy metals.

Synthetic dyes are widely used in the rubber, textiles, plastics, paper and cosmetics industries to color their products. The effectiveness of adsorption for dye removal from wastewater has made it an ideal alternative to other expensive treatment methods. This study investigates the physicochemical properties of animal-bone- (AB) and corncob- (CC) derived activated carbon on the removal of methylene blue dye. The effects of condition variables such as initial dye concentration, adsorbent dose, pH and contact time were studied. The results show that animal-bone-derived activated carbon has better potential for dye removal than does the corn cob-derived equivalent. AB revealed a higher adsorption capacity of intensity (2.40) and is of higher surface area - 500 m2g–1, while CC has adsorptive capacity of 1.25, intensity of 2.80 and surface area of 420 m2/g–1. What is more, the removal efficiency increases as adsorbent dose increases. This makes it an interesting option for dye removal from aqueous solutions of dye.

The use of bottom ash without heating as an adsorbent in the pulp and paper wastewater treatment process has reduced TSS 77.5%, COD 85.72%, chloride 26.9%, TDS 1143 ppm, and EC 2180 s/cm, which have met the environmental quality standards.

Opis:
Using the products derived from agricultural wastes as low-cost adsorbent materials to remove organic or inorganic contaminants would be ideal, as these materials are readily available in many countries. This study aimed to prepare environmentally friendly adsorbents made from nanocomposite OPBA / Bentonite / TiO2. The coprecipitation method was used in preparing OPBA, and CTAB surfactant was added in bentonite preparation. Meanwhile, the manufacture of TiO2 was carried out using the sol-gel method. Characterization was done by XRD, FTIR, SEM, and BET. The adsorbent spectra did not show a significant shift in absorption where the O-H bonds were becoming weaker due to the presence of TiO2 in the interlayer of bentonite. Another possibility is due to the influence of calcination and heating. The O-H groups of H2O are hydroxylated and dehydrated from within between layers. The formation of the composite OPBA/TiO2/Bentonite does not change the crystallinity of TiO2 significantly. This proves that there is no decrease in photocatalyst activity after the addition of OPBA and bentonite. The morphology of the whole sample has a flake-like structure that has pores. The addition of OPBA into Bentonite/TiO2 causes a decrease in the specific surface area of the sample.
