Opis:
The current study is dedicated to measuring vowel temporal acoustics (duration, durational difference, and durational ratio) in the medial position of mostly CVCVCV polysyllabic words in Arabic and Japanese, avoiding the asymmetries in vowel position, syllable structure, and coda consonant quantity (singleton versus geminate) observed in previous experiments. Twenty-nine (16 Arabic and 13 Japanese) participants were asked to use a carrier sentence to produce 60 polysyllabic (mainly CVCVCV) items that contrasted in vowel quantity (short versus long) and vowel quality (/a/, /i/, and /u/) at a normal speech rate. The results show that while short and long vowels are durationally distinct within a language, Japanese vowels are clearly longer than Arabic vowels, although the durational difference remains approximately the same between the two languages. The durational ratio of short-to-long vowel presents a new pattern that contrasts with that reported in earlier research. Specifically, Japanese long vowels in the medial position of polysyllabic words are twice as long as their short counterparts, while Arabic long vowels are more than twice as long. This shows that both vowel position and syllable structure must be considered when measuring vowel temporal acoustics or when structuring stimuli for perception experiments.

Opis:
Mosques are Islamic places of worship where speech and music rituals are performed. Since two different languages are spoken there, mosques are described as bilingual spaces. Among studies on the complex acoustic structure of mosques there are only few studies on speech intelligibility and none on the bilingual characteristics of the mosque. Therefore, a comprehensive study has been carried out to evaluate the acoustic comfort of the contemporary Turkish mosques (CTM) over speech intelligibility of Turkish and Arabic languages. In the study the CTM model providing optimum acoustic conditions recommended in the literature is examined on speech intelligibility by applying acoustic simulation and auralisation techniques, as well as word recognition tests. As a result, the acoustic condition in the model is found insufficient in terms of speech intelligibility of both languages. Also, with the decrease of Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR), the Turkish intelligibility ratio is observed to decrease at least two times faster than the Arabic ones. This study is viewed as an outline for researchers to further study mosque acoustics in terms of speech intelligibility, and thus support the standardisation process of the acoustic comfort criteria for the mosques.

Listening tests have been carried out to quantify the significance of binaural auralization over monaural auralization in accordance with the acoustic properties of the enclosure. To this end, acoustic rendering of three different rooms were generated based on synthesized monaural (two channels with the same audio material) and binaural room impulse responses. The auralizations were evaluated by means of subjective tests using headphones with non-individualized equalization. Parameters, such as localization, spatial impression and realism, were taken into consideration to determine the relevance of providing binaural information for the auralization of a given room. The analysis of the data has been conducted following a statistical approach based on ANOVA and Pearson correlation. The results indicate that spatial perception is strongly dependent on the acoustic characteristics of the rooms and on the listening condition of the audio material. Furthermore, as expected, advantages of binaural rendering in terms of source localization was also confirmed.

This paper proposes a new approach for calculating the impulse response of room acoustics. Impulse response provides unique characterization of any discrete lineartime invariant (LTI) systems. We assume that the room is a linear time-invariant system and the impulse response is calculated simply by sending a Dirac Impulse into the system as input and getting the response from the output. Then, the output of the system is represented as a sum of time-shifted weighted impulse responses. Both mathematical justifications for the proposed method and results from simulation software developed to evaluate the proposed approach are presented in detail.

The aim of the paper is a theoretical analysis of propagation of high-intensity acoustic waves throughout a bubble layer. A simple model in the form of a layer with uniformly distributed mono-size spherical bubbles is considered. The mathematical model of the pressure wave’s propagation in a bubbly liquid layer is constructed using the linear non-dissipative wave equation and assuming that oscillations of a single bubble satisfy the Rayleigh-Plesset equation. The models of the phase sound speed, changes of resonant frequency of bubbles and damping coefficients in a bubbly liquid are compared and discussed. The relations between transmitted and reflected waves and their second harmonic amplitudes are analyzed. A numerical analysis is carried out for different environmental parameters such as layer thicknesses and values of the volume fraction as well as for different parameters of generated signals. Examples of results of the numerical modeling are presented.

As a consequence of recent implementations of EU Directives related to noise protection more and more students of various AGH-UST programs are introduced to the basics of acoustic measurements. Students at various levels of theoretical background in the field of acoustic measurements are offered practical training in measurements using digital sound analyzers. The situation would be optimal if each student could have a device at his/her own disposal. Unfortunately, such a situation is not possible at the moment because of various reasons. With the above problem in mind, a dedicated software package has been developed, implemented in the LabVIEW environment, which allows detailed studies of problems related to the acoustic signal measurement using sound level meters, as well as tasks in spectral analysis (1/1 and 1/3 band filters) and narrow-band (FFT) analysis. With such organization during the introductory laboratory classes each student is offered a direct individual contact with a virtual device that is properly pre-programmed for realization of a well-constructed learning process. It definitely facilitates understanding of the essence of acoustic signal measurements and provides a good basis for further laboratory work carried out as a team-activity.

Opis:
Source/filter models have frequently been used to model sound production of the vocal apparatus and musical instruments. Beginning in 1968, in an effort to measure the transfer function (i.e., transmission response or filter characteristic) of a trombone while being played by expert musicians, sound pressure signals from the mouthpiece and the trombone bell output were recorded in an anechoic room and then subjected to harmonic spectrum analysis. Output/input ratios of the signals’ harmonic amplitudes plotted vs. harmonic frequency then became points on the trombone’s transfer function. The first such recordings were made on analog 1/4 inch stereo magnetic tape. In 2000 digital recordings of trombone mouthpiece and anechoic output signals were made that provide a more accurate measurement of the trombone filter characteristic. Results show that the filter is a high-pass type with a cutoff frequency around 1000 Hz. Whereas the characteristic below cutoff is quite stable, above cutoff it is extremely variable, depending on level. In addition, measurements made using a swept-sine-wave system in 1972 verified the high-pass behavior, but they also showed a series of resonances whose minima correspond to the harmonic frequencies which occur under performance conditions. For frequencies below cutoff the two types of measurements corresponded well, but above cutoff there was a considerable difference. The general effect is that output harmonics above cutoff are greater than would be expected from linear filter theory, and this effect becomes stronger as input pressure increases. In the 1990s and early 2000s this nonlinear effect was verified by theory and measurements which showed that nonlinear propagation takes place in the trombone, causing a wave steepening effect at high amplitudes, thus increasing the relative strengths of the upper harmonics.

Several authors have proposed indices to synthesize the acoustics of a space, especially of concert halls. Meanwhile, a few studies have focused on the acoustics of worship spaces. The peculiarities of these last ones have shown distinctive characteristics. The increasing interest for the acoustics of worship spaces justifies the formulation of indices to synthesize the results of acoustic studies in these buildings too. This paper proposes a double synthetic index to evaluate the acoustics of a church. The index is obtained combining the average values of seven parameters generally considered in studies of architectural acoustics. The differences between requirements for music and speech in churches suggest to consider different optimal values of the selected parameters for different kinds of sound. A double synthetic index has been defined to synthesize the acoustical properties related to the music and to the speech separately. The validity of this double index is then assessed, comparing its values with subjective preferences captured through listening tests. The index, which is proposed and validated in this paper, aims to be an instrument to show synthetically the acoustical characteristics of a church to people with low knowledge in acoustics.

Geometrical acoustics is the most commonly used method of room acoustics prediction. Its efficiency can be improved by explicit calculation of ray contribution to each receiver during reflection called algebraic reflection. The aim of this research is to analyse the applicability and impact of reflection model choice on algebraic reflection calculation using the ray tracing with next event estimation. The tested reflection models include the specular and Lambert reflection combination and the Phong reflection model. Classical ray tracing algorithm, without algebraic reflections, is used as a reference. Based on simulation results and statistical analysis we conclude that the change of the reflection model significantly affects the acoustics conditions within the simulation changing echograms in early reflections region and the reverberation times. Statistical analysis proved that echograms obtained with the combination of ray tracing with next event estimation and Phong reflection model have lowest simulation to simulation variability.

The foundations of nonlinear acoustics may be traced nearly 250 years back in time, but only the last 50 years have shown an increasing number of attempts to exploit the research results in nonlinear acoustics. Based upon the fundamental equations of fluid dynamics, the second-order acoustic equations may be derived which can be reduced to a compound equation describing several of the most important and fast developing areas of research in nonlinear acoustics. The relations between this compound equation and Burgers' equation, Korteweg-DeVries equation, the K-Z-K equation, Westervelt's equation and the general second-order wave equation are discussed in depth. Finally, it is shown how the derivatives of the compound equation can be applied to nonlinear acoustic research related to materials characterisation by use of the B/A-ratio, to underwater acoustics by use of the parametric acoustic array and to focused, high-power ultrasonic fields.

In the article an attempt was made to assess the acoustic impact of the A1 highway between Stryków and Tuszyn on the natural environment. For this purpose a noise level measurement together with octave band sound levels registration were conducted. Noise level measurements were carried out using the method of continuous measurement, under favorable weather conditions, in accordance with the requirements of the obligatory Regulation in respect of emission measurement. The measurement points were located in neuralgic places, where possible the noise levels could be the most annoying (areas with the highest density of residential buildings). It is important to note that these areas are not protected by the acoustic screens. The results of measurements were used to set down the average sound level LAeqT. In accordance with the permissible noise levels in the environment [1] the following acceptable noise levels were assumed: LAeqD = 61 dB for the day time and LAeqN = 56 dB for the night time. In addition, the analysis of octave acoustic noise spectrum, using curves of equal volume N has been carried out.

In the paper a problem how to properly influence an acoustic field in the enclosure with a Vibro-acoustical source [1] inside is considered. Particularly, optimization of the configuration of an acoustic absorber, i.e. porous material characterized by a complex impedance on the boundary, is presented [2]. The combination of the modal approach to modeling of the room acoustic field and the artificial intelligence methods to the optimization is a new attitude to the problem. In order to describe the acoustic pressure distribution inside the enclosure, the modal analysis with modal coupling was applied and presented in Section 2. In this case the acoustic pressure distribution in the room is a sum over a set of the room eigenfunctions and proper time components i.e. modal amplitudes [2, 3]. The formulae describing these amplitudes were obtained and eventually introduced into the multi-objective function definition [2, 4] in Section 3. The acoustic impedances on the room boundaries correlated with the material thickness were selected as design variables. In order to solve the optimization problem defined in Section 3 directly, a genetic algorithm was applied. The non-dominated solutions were searched in the process [2, 4, 5, 6]. The main ingredients of the algorithm and its settings are described in Section 4. In Section 5 the example object (room) is specified and shown in detail in Tab. 1. Applying a specific acoustic absorber on the boundary [2, 7], the room with the harmonic source was modified according to the optimization method. As the result, the set of the Pareto-optimal solutions was obtained (see Fig. 1). One solution of the Pareto set was selected and corresponding, particular boundaries covering with the acoustic absorber are shown in Fig. 2. Last, the model accuracy and the optimization results, i.e. noise reduction, are presented in Figs. 3a and 3b. The result verification was performed by comparison with the acoustic measurements (see Figs. 3c and 3d).

Opis:
Ray tracing simulation of sound field in rooms is a common tool in room acoustic design for predicting impulse response. There are numerous commercial engineering tools utilising ray tracing simulation. A specific problem in the simulation is the modelling of diffuse reflections when contribution of individual surface is prevailing. The paper introduces modelling of scattering which is interesting when the whole impulse response of a room is not a goal but contribution of certain surface. The main goal of the Project is to shape directivity characteristics of scattered reflection. Also, an innovative approach is suggested for converting the energy histogram information obtained by ray tracing into an “equivalent impulse response”. The proposed algorithm is tested by comparing the results with measurements in a real sound field, realised in a scaled model where a diffusing surface is hardware-implemented.

Currently used procedures in room acoustics measurements are not automated. Particularly in medium-sized and large areas they require a lot of time and intensive labour which directly translates into an increase in the measurement cost. Introduction of an automated system would increase efficiency of the measurements, and therefore could present both practical and scientific benefit. The paper presents initial feasibility study for designing a system that permits the measurement of selected acoustic parameters for any choice of three-dimensional grid of measurement points throughout the volume of the room. The system will utilize an autonomous probe attached to a blimp, and will be able to measure and analyze acoustic characteristics of the rooms. The article discusses the initial choices of the system elements, starting from the general idea, through the mechanical design and control procedures, the software that controls positioning and flying of the probe, up to the automation of the measurement procedure and its possible impact on the acoustic field.
