Opis:
This article describes the bases of the acoustic emission analysis to make successful applications in the range of the tribological problems, especially at machinery slide journal bearings. Acoustic emission differs from ultrasonic testing, which actively probes the structure; Acoustic emission listens for emissions from active defects and is very sensitive to defect activity when a structure is loaded beyond its service load. During detecting and analysing the generated acoustic emission we earn information about the behaviour, state or quality of these acoustic emission sources. A lot of different sources are generating acoustic emission (e.g. corrosion processes, fluid friction, cracks, cutting processes). This paper shows the acoustic emission sources, the wave propagation, the mode conversion, the damping, the design of a typical transducer and the whole measurement chain. The piezoelectric disc, the "heart" of a typical acoustic emission transducer, converts the incoming mechanical wave into a corresponding electrical signal. Every transducer has its own characteristic, if this is unknown we can test it with difficult methods e.g. so called reciprocal method. On the end of this paper the signal parameters (burst-count, rise-time, signal-duration, signal peak amplitude, signal energy and root-mean-square) will be discussed.

The article describes the tests of prestressed concrete sleepers made according to the method specified in the requirements of the European standards (EN 13230-2:2009 Railway applications – Track – Concrete sleepers and bearers – Part 2: Prestressed monoblock sleepers) and WTWiO regulations, and an additional measurement method was used – acoustic emission (AE). The purpose of the tests using the acoustic emission method was to verify the results obtained using other test methods described in the European standard. The use of this method in sleeper tests enables obtaining precise data from the sleeper load test and determination of the characteristic parameters based on the recorded AE signals. Due to the variety of existing sleepers and the development of products in this area: wooden sleepers, composite sleepers, steel sleepers (type Y), the use of the acoustic emission method in research will be a good support and will enable proper assessment of these elements of the railway road.

Opis:
Usually machining centres for processing wood-based and composite materials have moving partial machine enclosures in the X-axis direction. Because the workpieces to be machined are often large (e.g. aircraft doors), these partial enclosures have prevailed on the market compared to voluminous complete enclosures. Owing to the general trend towards complete machining through process integration, an increasing number of additional units are integrated into machining centres in addition to the main spindle. This leads to an increase of the mass to be moved as well as a larger and thus heavier partial enclosure. This inevitable increase in mass leads to a deterioration of the dynamic properties of the machine. To counteract this increase in mass, the use of lightweight design materials for machine enclosures becomes in the focus of attention. The lightweight materials to be used must comply with the requirements of modern mechanical engineering and legislation: retention in the event of tool breakage, reduction in the noise exposure of the machine environment and cost-effective solutions compared to the materials used nowadays. The sheet steel used today as material for partial enclosures is therefore to be supplemented or replaced with suitable lightweight design materials. Different lightweight materials are qualified for suitability as machine enclosure. Apart from mass reduction, ecological as well as economic aspects of the used materials play an important role. For this purpose, the safety properties (impact resistance in case of tool breakage / collision) of these weight-reduced materials have to be determined. In addition, an improvement in the acoustic behaviour of the machine is achieved by the new lightweight materials since the machine enclosure shields the distinctive sound sources.

Opis:
This article presents the methodology and research results of monitoring friction processes between couple of cooperating elements by acoustic emission method. The research was carried out at the lathing machine test stand of the Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen. The test stand included lathing machine Proxon PD 210, shaft, made of austenitic stainless steel X2CrNi18-9 and steel plate, made of S235. The Friction process was monitored by an acoustic emission set made by Physical Acoustics Corporation (PAC). The PAC system includes: preamplifier USB AE Node, type 1283 with bandpass 20 kHz – 1 MHz, AE signal measurement sensor type VS 150M, with a frequency range 100-450 kHz, computer with AE Win for USB Version E5.30 software. During the study, the acoustic emission (AE) generated by friction between shaft and steel plate was recorded. The load of the plate was 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10 N. The following parameters were determined: amplitude, number of events – hits, the effective value of the signal (RMS). The use of grease between the cooperating elements caused a significant reduction in friction and thus the power of the generated signal (10 to 30 times). In the case of dry friction, without grease, the maximum RMS value was recorded at 4 N load and at the lubricant between the pair cooperating at 1 N load. The research has shown that it is possible to monitor the friction process between cooperating elements using the acoustic emission method.

This paper provides an example of the application of the acoustic emission (AE) method for the diagnosis of technical conditions of a three-phase on-load tap-changer (OLTC) GIII type. The measurements were performed for an amount of 10 items of OLTCs, installed in power transformers with a capacity of 250 MVA. The study was conducted in two different OLTC operating conditions during the tapping process: under load and free running conditions. The analysis of the measurement results was made in both time domain and time-frequency domain. The description of the AE signals generated by the OLTC in the time domain was performed using the analysis of waveforms and determined characteristic times. Within the time-frequency domain the measured signals were described by short-time Fourier transform spectrograms.

Opis:
An acoustic emission method (AE) is widespread and often applied for partial discharge (PD) diagnostics, mainly due to its ease of application as well as noninvasiveness and relatively high sensitivity. This paper presents comparative analysis of AE signals measurement results archived under laboratory conditions as well as on-site actual AE signals generated by inside PDs in electrical power transformer during its normal service. Three different PD model sources are applied for laboratory research: point to point, multipoint to plate and surface type. A typical measuring set up commonly used for on-site transformer PD diagnostics is provided for the laboratory tasks: piezoelectric joint transducer, preamplifier, amplifier and measuring PC interface. During the on-site research there are three measuring tracks applied simultaneously. Time domain, time-frequency domain and statistical tools are used for registered AE signals analysis. A number of descriptors are proposed as a result of the analysis. In the paper, attempt of AE signals descriptors, archived under laboratory condition application possibilities for on-site PD diagnostics of power transformers during normal service is made.

The hereby article presents results of experimental tests which prove the possibility of indirect evaluation of the grinded object's quality with the application of monitoring and analysis of selected acoustic emission signal (AE) registered during the machining process. As the grinding process is carried out and the grinding wheel wear progresses, the acoustic emission signal value is shaped adequately to the workpiece surface quality changes. The binding descriptor of changes of roughness profile and material residual stresses is the RMS value of the acoustic emission signal and in particular the statistical features that characterize the distribution of values contained in the signal sample in relation to the average value. The analysis results indicate that the acoustic emission signal is a convenient indicator for evaluation of stresses cumulated in the surface layer of the material and in selected surface geometrical structure parameters.

Acoustic emission method (AE) can be used for the diagnosis of machine parts or apparatus such as, for example, ball valves. This paper presents the methodology and research results of ball valve in fresh water systems. The opening angle of the valve was changed during the research. The flow of water was measured by a magnetically inductive flowmeter. The research was carried out on a laboratory test stand using an acoustic emission set made by Vallen Inc. This set included: 4 channel signal recorder AMSY 6, two measurement modules ASIP-2/S, preamplifier with a frequency range 20 kHz – 1 MHz and the strengthening of 34 dB and AE signal measurement sensor type VS 150M, with a frequency range 100 – 450kHz. The obtained from the AE-System made by Vallen were compared with the results of the AE-System made by Physical Acoustics (PAC). The PAC system includes preamplifier USB AE Node, type 1283 with bandpass 20 kHz – 1 MHz, AE-Sensor R6D, computer with AE Win for USB Version E5.32 software. During the study, the acoustic emission (AE) generated by flowing water was recorded. The following parameters were determined: amplitude, number of events – hits, the effective value of the signal (RMS). Analysis of the results showed that within a specific range of opening angle of the valve the value of the generated acoustic emission in flowing water increases. This is probably associated with the occurrence of cavitation within the valve. This is an undesirable phenomenon and that these opening angles of ball valve should be avoided in the normal operation.

Opis:
The article presents the application of Acoustic Emission (AE) method for detection and registration of partial discharges (PD) generated in medium voltage (MV) cable isolation and MV cable head. The insulation of the high voltage cable is made of a flexible material whose properties are characterised by a high coefficient of attenuation of the acoustic signals. For this reason, the AE method has not been used so far to detect PD in energetic cables. The subjects of the research were the MV cable and the standard T-type cable head. The cable contained defects which were the source of partial discharges. In case of cable head the PD were provoked by thin grounded electrode which was introduced into connector opening. The results of AE measurements are presented in the form of spectrograms. Acoustic Emission was evoked when the applied voltage level reached the value of 7.5 kV for the cable and 4 kV for the cable head. The authors used the acoustic instrumentation of their own design intended for future field use. Obtaining successful results of partial discharges measurements using the acoustic method in the cable insulation makes an original contribution of the presented work.

Thanks to their excellent strength and durability, composite materials are used to manufacture many important structural elements. In the face of their extensive use, it is crucial to seek suitable methods for monitoring damages and locating their origins. The purpose of the article was to verify the possibility of applying the acoustic emissions (AE) method in the detection of damages in the structures of composite materials. The experimental part comprised static tensile tests carried out on various sandwich composites, including simultaneous registration of elastic waves with increasing loads, carried out with the use of an acoustic-electrical sensor connected. The signal obtained from the sensor was then further processed and used to draw up diagrams of the AE hits, amplitude, root mean square of the AE source signal (RMS) and duration in the function of time. These diagrams were then applied on their corresponding stretching curves, the obtained charts were analysed. The results obtained point to a conclusion that the acoustic emissions method can be successfully used to detect and locate composite material damages.

Measured and analysed states were caused by natural degradation of parts of the machine. The efficiency of recognition of the analysed states was good. The proposed method of fault diagnostics can find application in protection of three-phase induction motors.

Opis:
Acoustic emission analysis is defined as a passive, non-destructive investigation method, which only listens for AEwaves (AEW), generated actively by an object of interest. Therefore, the AEW must have the possibility to propagate from their source to an acoustic emission sensor (AES). By virtue of the piezoelectric effect, the AEW transmitted into electrical signals inside of the AES. During the analysation of these electrical signals we earn –online– information about the object of interest, e.g. the operating characteristic of a machine or the strength of the friction of a tribolocical system. To enable the AEW to propagate into the AES, the sensor has to be fixed suitable onto the object of interest. Hereby has to be strictly respected, that the sensor is fixed in a reproducible mechanical way as well as to ensure that the through-transmission has a weak attenuation (couplant). Standard AES have the shape of a circular cylinder (diameter and height depend on the operation purpose), the AEW pass through one of the frontends into the sensor. The objects of interest can have different geometry of the surface (e.g. plane, cylindrical, unspecific) or temperatures which usually conflicting the operating range of the sensor. Depending on the operational purpose, there are many different couplants to use. This article offers help to master the different connecting challenges within the range of acoustic emission analysis.

This paper presents methods and results of the 1st series of tests of acoustic emission (AE) signals, aimed at assessing degree of corrosion protection of a tank made of hull structural steel, protected by means of a protective coating combined from polyurethane layer and concrete filler. The tests were carried out in compliance with a method specially elaborated for application to the work in question. In the method were used requirements of the standards in force, as well as experience gained during realization of the research project CORRSHIP, included in 5th Frame Program of European Union. The application of the AE method to detect and localize corrosion sources during exposure of specimens to corrosive mixture confirmed its high usefulness for the carried-out tests on corrosion protection effectiveness of new types of protective coatings.

Non-invasive damage monitoring of concrete structures by means of Acoustic Emission (AE) requires multitransducers, multi-channel acquisition, high sampling frequency and long observation time. Owing to its propagation in concrete, the signal from AE reduces its amplitude during the propagation, and, consequently, some events can be lost due to lower signal intensity than the trigger level set on one sensor only. The innovative proposal discussed in the paper consists in the introduction of a Flat Amplifier and Trigger generator block (FAT) in order to generate a logical trigger when the AE is detected by any transducer. Experimental tests confirm the effectiveness of the FAT to acquire all the AE events and to increase the evaluation accuracy of damage indexes.

Opis:
Acoustic emission is one of the effective techniques used for the condition monitoring of rolling element bearings. Contamination is one of the major reasons for bearing early failure due to presence of solid particle in lubricant grease. In most cases, outer race is stationary and the inner race is attached to the rotating assembly. The lubrication is very essential for the bearing to perform under various demanding conditions. The main aim of this project is to analyze the effect of contamination of lubricant by solid particles on the dynamic behavior of rolling bearing. Green sand at three concentration levels 5%, 15%, 25% and different particle sizes 75 μm, 106 μm and 150μm is used to contaminate the lubricant. Experimental tests have been performed for different load and speed condition in good and contaminated ball bearings lubricated with grease. The trends in the amount of AE waves affected by the contamination of the grease were determined. Acoustic emission signals were analyzed in terms of RMS, kurtosis, and peak-peak.

Opis:
An alternative method for analysis of acoustic emission (AE) signals generated by partial discharges (PD), based on a correlation between voltage phase run and AE pulses, so called phase resolved PD pattern (PRPD), is presented in the paper. PRPD pattern is a well-known analysis tool commonly used in such PD diagnostic methods as conventional electrical and UHF ones. Moreover, it yields various signal analysis abilities and allows a direct correlation indication between measurement results achieved using different methods. An original PRPD measurement methodology applied for AE method as well as some exemplary measurement results and further data analysis capabilities are presented in the paper. Also a comparative analysis of PRPD patterns achieved using various measurement methods and different PD source configurations have been investigated. All presented experiments were done under laboratory conditions using PD model sources immersed in the insulation oil. The main purpose of the presented research is to indicate an all-embracing analytical tool that yields an ability to direct comparison (qualitative as well as quantitative) of the AE measurement results with other commonly applied PD measurement methods. The presented results give a solid fundamental for further research work concerning a direct correlation method for AE and other described in the paper diagnostic techniques, mainly in order to continue PD phenomena analysis and assessment in real life high voltage apparatus insulation systems under normal onsite operation conditions.

Opis:
Metal network compounds have primary properties. The use of lightweight and low vitality is a testament to the growing interest in the automotive industry. Aluminum alloys, due to their advanced physical, mechanical and tribological properties, have become a highly emerging material for a variety of industrial applications and the importance of efficient material selection is explained. In this paper, an Al8011 hybrid metal matrix composite is developed through the stir casting process. The different weight proportions of B4C (3%, 6%, 9% & 12%) and fixed proportions of 2% MoS2 have been used. Composite developed are subjected to mechanical properties evaluation and seawater corrosion studies following standard procedures. To study the porosity of the composite samples, theoretical density and actual density are calculated. An acoustic emission system-assisted tensile test is carried out to report the strength of the composite. From this experimental method, adding reinforcement can increase the tensile strength and hardness of the composites. Under sea water, the increase in reinforcement found an increase in corrosion resistance. Fractured surfaces were perused using SEM and EDS analysis.

Opis:
The article presents the results concerning the use of clustering methods to identify signals of acoustic emission (AE) generated by partial discharge (PD) in oil-paper insulation. The conducted testing featured qualitative analysis of the following clustering methods: single linkage, complete linkage, average linkage, centroid linkage and Ward linkage. The purpose of the analysis was to search the tested series of AE signal measurements, deriving from three various PD forms, for elements of grouping (clusters), which are most similar to one another and maximally different than in other groups in terms of a specific feature or adopted criteria. Then, the conducted clustering was used as a basis for attempting to assess the effectiveness of identification of particular PD forms that modelled exemplary defects of the power transformer’s oil-paper insulation system. The relevant analyses and simulations were conducted using the Matlab estimation environment and the clustering procedures available in it. The conducted tests featured analyses of the results of the series of measurements of acoustic emissions generated by the basic PD forms, which were obtained in laboratory conditions using spark gap systems that modelled the defects of the power transformer’s oil-paper insulation.

The paper presents the concept of a diagnostic system of the generating gear grinding process of cylindrical gear wheels with acoustic emission as a diagnostic signal. The purpose of this diagnostic is detection of formation of thermal defects in grinding gears. Due to the complex kinematics of the grinding process causing the change in a cross-section of the cutting layer on each envelope pass there was developed a cutting layer mathematical model. The mathematical description of a grinding wheel and grinding teeth profile is given. There were determined the values of cutting layer mathematical model geometric parameters in the individual envelope passes. Then, correlation studies on a tangential force and acoustic emission were performed and get the correlation coefficient R2> 0.9 was obtained. The dependence for determining the maximum thermal power density was derived. An experimental setup and recorded signal processing scheme are presented. The method for analysis and processing of the recorded signal in time and frequency domain was developed based on literature and scientific studies. The worked out model and scientific investigations allowed developing a concept of diagnostic of the gear grinding based on acquisition and processing of the acoustic emission signal. This system will allow the detection of grinding teeth thermal damage whose formation influences the selected AE signal parameters. There are presented the statistical parameters of AE signals, which reveal a correlation with the formation of thermal stresses. In addition, the are shown the recorded AE signal waveforms after processing.
