Opis:
Experiments concerning hydrochloric acid assisted extraction of polysaccharides from foxtail millet were carried out. Various combinations of extraction conditions of hydrochloric acid concentration, liquid-solid ratio, extraction time and extraction temperature were investigated using the Response Surface Methodology at three levels and four variables of Box-Behnken designs to obtain the maximum yield of polysaccharides. The experimental data were fitted to a quadratic equation using multiple regression analysis and analysed. The antioxidant activity of the obtained polysaccharides was also investigated in vitro. The optimal conditions were an acid concentration of 2.4 mol L-1, a liquid- solid ratio of 19.3:1 mL g-1, an extraction time of 1.2 h, and an extraction temperature 80.6°C. Under these conditions, the experimental yield was 52.13 mg g-1, which was in close agreement with the value of 52.37 mg g-1 predicted by the model. The mathematical model had a high correlation with experimental data (p<0.05). The polysaccharides of foxtail millet display a high radical scavenging capacity against superoxide and hydroxyl radicals.

Opis:
Precipitates and sludges from the galvanic industry are one of the sources of the environment contamination with heavy metals. Therefore, the investigations are carried out in order to developer the effective method of metals elimination from these wastes. The promising results are obtained in case of the application of microbial leaching. Up to now results concerned mainly the metals bioleaching in acidic environment. In this research work the possibility of heavy metals removal from galvanic wastes using the culture of sulphur oxidizing bacteria (pH 2-4) and a mixed culture of both sulphur oxidizing bacteria and biosurfactant producing bacteria (pH 6.5-8) was examined. It allowed to compare the process effectiveness in acidic and neutral environment. The cultures were prepared based on the activated sludge from the municipal wastewater treatment plant. The presence of sulphur oxidizing bacteria Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans was confirmed using the PCR method. Bacillus subtilis and B. cereus strains were applied as biosurfactant producers. Three galvanic wastes, different in grain size, water content and heavy metal concentration, were bioleached. The research revealed that the metal release from galvanic wastes was more effective in presence of biosurfactant, especially in case of copper, but also for cadmium and chromium. The process effectiveness in acidic condition was comparatively lower. Zinc was the only metal that was bioleached faster in acidic environment, with similar final metal removal after 25 days of the process. The maximum values of metals elimination in the presence of biosurfactant depended on the bioleached waste type and were: 7.1-100% for copper, 3.7-50.3% for zinc, 30-50.5% for chromium, 34.1-71.9% for cadmium. The effectiveness of the nickel and lead removal was lower than 5%. The prolongation of the bioleaching period up to 40 days in case of waste C (the less susceptible to the bioleaching) resulted in elimination of 67.9% of Cu, 34.7% of Zn, 100% of Cr and 39.1% of Pb, while the effectiveness of nickel removal was still very low.

Under these conditions, undissociated acid (A’) reacts with the amine (B) to form various complexes in toluene. The complexes formed and equilibrium constants were estimated by a graphical analysis method. The complexes formed in these systems were found to be A’nB type species for hypophosphorous acid, A’nBm type species for phosphorous acid, (A'B)n type species for phosphoric acid, respectively. The experimental results could be explained by reaction models and equilibrium constants for each acid.

The phenomenon of third phase formation in different liquid extraction systems is well known for more than 50 years but until now a good mathematical model that could predict the third phase formation has not been developed. The third phase is unwanted in extraction systems because, for example, in nuclear fuel reprocessing it can cause criticality problems. However, the third phase may be a useful tool in other technologies. In this paper a new approach to third phase investigation is proposed. This new approach eliminates the aqueous phase, simplifies the system and gives new insight in the nature the third phase. It is a step forward in understanding of the mechanism governing the formation of third phase. This new approach could quickly provide sufficient data to develop a comprehensive model.

Extraction times for selected metal cations (Mg2+, Al3+, Zn2+, Cd2+, Cu2+, Ni2+, Co2+, Mn2+, Fe2+ and Fe3+) have been measured using cation-exchanging extractants - Versatic 10 (neodecanoic acid), DEHPA (bis(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid) and Cyanex 272 (bis(2,4,4-trimetylpentyl)phosphinic acid). Data was collected directly by measuring and recording pH of the two phase reaction mixture with maintaining continuity of the aqueous phase. Similarly, the stripping rate of selected cations (Mg2+, Al3+, Zn2+, Cu2+, Ni2+, Co2+) in a sulphuric acid solution was measured. Viscosities of organic phases, saturated with cations, were measured before their stripping. Additionally, the extraction dependence of Mg2+, Al3+, Fe2+ and Fe3+ on pH was measured using Versatic 10 at various concentrations (7.5, 15 and 30 %).

Addition of organic acids to dilute hydrochloric acid solution can improve the extraction of rare earth elements by single cationic extractants. However, the correlation between the chemical structure of organic acids and the extraction of REEs as well as the variation in equilibrium pH has not been elucidated. In this study, we investigated the extraction of Tb(III) from dilute HCl solutions containing an organic acid like formic, lactic, fumaric, or maleic acid. As extractants, single Cyanex 272, a mixture of Cyanex 272 and Alamine 336 (Ala336-Cy272), and an ionic liquid (ALi-Cy272) synthesized by Cyanex 272 and Aliquat 336 were used. The speciation of Tb(III) in dilute HCl solutions containing organic acids was analyzed. In extraction of Tb(III), organic acids showed two roles as complexing and buffering agent, which depended on the chemical structure of the acids. There was some difference in the extraction of Tb(III) between single Cyanex 272 and ionic liquid, ALi-Cy272. During extraction with ALi-Cy272, formic and lactic acid negatively affected the extraction of Tb(III). The fact that the chemical structure of organic acids affected the extraction of Tb(III) from dilute HCl solution by the studied extractants can provide important information on the selection of suitable extraction systems.

Opis:
In this work, a novel process of pellet non-salt roasting and H2SO4 leaching was proposed for the selective extraction of vanadium from vanadium–titanium magnetite concentrate. Vanadium can be leached but the iron impurity was maintained in the pellets. Moreover, the leached pellets can meet the quality requirements of the iron-making process after secondary roasting, realizing comprehensive utilization. The maximal vanadium leaching efficiency was up to 60.3%, whereas 0.17% of the iron impurity was leached. The optimum conditions of pellet roasting and leaching were obtained by single-factor experiments. The X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy–energy disperse X-ray spectrometry analyses showed that the vanadium iron spinel can be oxidized and decomposed into Fe2O3 and vanadate during the roasting process. Given that dilute sulfuric acid can react with vanadate without reacting with Fe2O3 in the leaching process, selective vanadium extraction was realized. This work provides new insights into the industrial production of vanadium–titanium magnetite concentrate involving the direct extraction of vanadium.

Opis:
There is an existing need for the development of rapid and easy-to-perform methods for analyzing chemical composition of soil basing on simultaneous extraction of many elements in a single solution. Furthermore, it is desirable that mineral concentration determined in soil using these methods should be significantly correlated with its content in plants. Many researches indicated that soil concentration of heavy metals and trace elements after extraction using 0.01 M CaCl2 did not reflect its content in vegetable plants.. The aim of the research was to determine the relation between soil content of: Al, B, Ba, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Li, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Sr, Ti, V and Zn extracted in 0.03 M CH3COOH as well as 1 M HCl and its content in carrot storage roots. In 2008–2009 studies were carried out on soil samples after carrot cultivation (from 0–30 cm, 30–60 cm and 60–90 cm layers) as well as on carrot storage roots grown on the same soil site. In total, analysis of chemical composition (with respect to the content of tested elements) comprised: 112 samples of carrot storage roots, 112 soil samples from 0–30 cm layer as well as 48 soil samples from 30–60 cm and 60–90 cm layers. Higher applicability of soil extraction with 0.03 M CH3COOH (commonly used for macro element chlorides and boron determination) in comparison to extraction with 1 M HCl was demonstrated in reference to the estimation of the relation between soil and carrot content of: Al, B, Ba, Cd, Cr, Cu, Li, Ni, Sr, Ti and Zn. Application of 1 M HCl gave relatively better results when compared to the extraction with 0.03 M CH3COOH with respect to calculated values of correlation coefficient for Co, Fe, Mn, Mo and Pb content in soil and carrot. Content of Co, Mo, Pb and V in soil after extraction using 0.03 M CH3COOH was below the limits of its detection using ICP-OES spectrometer. No relation was found between vanadium content in soil (analyzed after extraction with 1 M HCl) and its content in carrot storage roots.

Badania wykazały większą przydatność ekstrakcji gleby 0,03 M CH3COOH (standardowo służącej do określania zawartości makroskładników chlorków i boru) niż ekstrakcji 1 M HCl do oceny związku pomiędzy zawartością Al, B, Ba, Cd, Cr, Cu, Li, Ni, Sr, Ti i Zn w glebie a zawartością tych pierwiastków w korzeniach spichrzowych marchwi. Zastosowanie ekstrakcji 1 M HCl dało stosunkowo lepsze rezultaty niż ekstrakcja 0,03 M CH3COOH w zakresie wielkości współczynników korelacji pomiędzy zawartością Co, Fe, Mn, Mo i Pb w glebie i marchwi.

The purpose of the work was to study the efficiency of humic acids extraction from the biosubstrate under the action of electric discharges. The physical experiment showed that the main factor influencing the intensity of extraction is the degree of grinding of the solid phase of the biosubstrate-water suspension. The efficiency of electric discharge grinding depends on the pressure amplitude at the distance of the inner radius of the chamber and the number of discharge pulses. It was established that the number of chemical reagents (alkalis), usually used in the process of extracting humic acids from peat, can be reduced many times due to the appearance of radicals and peroxide compounds in the peat-water suspension resulting from the action of an electric discharge. The prospects of the non-thermal electric discharge method of intensification of the extraction of humic acids from biosubstrates were determined.
