    Opis:
    Nowadays, new versions of well-known fairy tales are extremely popular. However, it is debatable how to define such works. The author of the paper Postmodern Retelling of Fairy Tales — A Handful of Terminological Comments suggests using the term “retelling” in relation to a particular group of postmodern works which tell canonical, traditional fairy tales in new ways. Andrzej Sapkowski’s definition of “retelling” and differences between this notion and the others (such as “rewriting” or “adaptation”) are also considered. The article concludes with a proposal to form a new definition of “retelling”. It is based on the conviction that this term should be used to call both the mode of storytelling and such works in which various aspects of pre-texts undergo essential revisions.

    The paper discusses young adult fiction by Joanna Rudniańska, whose works belong to the stream of non-conformist coming-of-age novels marked by experiences of exclusively teenage girls/women, developing in Poland since the 1990s. Both Rok Smoka and Kotka Brygidy emphasise the personal quality of teenage girls and women, and present their fates with a particular consideration of their fairly individualised processes of maturation and intentional development of their identities. The author of this paper employs feminist methodologies to emphasise the ambivalent, borderline, and negative female experiences in the analysed texts. She offers a detailed interpretation of how the protagonists of the above-mentioned novels experience the world; she applies a metaphorical and fantastic perspective of telling herstories, while searching for matrilineal traces, the phenomenon of sisterhood, drastic rituals inscribed in the feminine domain, and the special kind of coming-of-age which constitutes the starting point for personal and subjective herstories.

    The article discusses the ways of fictionalizing biography in the midtwentieth century, using as examples two biographies. One is Dziennik pobytu w Rosji Adama Mickiewicza by Leon Gomolicki (published in 1949), which is based on chronologically arranged sources. The second is a young adult fiction book Namiestnik narodu by Tadeusz Łopalewski (published in 1955). In her analysis of the sources, the author of the article points out that Gomolicki’s work depends on Russian sources, unknown to a Polish reader. This announces his future decision to forsake academic writing and undertake experimental prose. Łopalewski’s prose on the other hand, paraphrases and summarizes source materials. He also relies on his own creative experience in radio and concentrates on Mickiewicz’s pronouncements rather than descriptions of his life. In Gomolicki’s work citation becomes a heterogeneous, almost experimental compilation while in Łopalewski’s novel the narration unifies diverse voices.

    The aim of the article A fairy-tale herstory. Postmodern strategies of reinterpretation by Angela Carter, Tanith Lee, and Emma Donoghue is to analyze selected postmodern fairy tales written by Angela Carter, Tanith Lee, and Emma Donoghue. The most important literary strategy applied by all three authors consists in presenting fairy tales from a new, female perspective. As a result, this strategy reveals “facts”, contexts, and meanings that have so far been unnoticed, ignored, or omitted in the original story, turning it into a fairy-tale “herstory”. Postmodern fairy tales by Carter, Lee, and Donoghue are revisionist stories that critically engage the “canonical” material, i.e. fairy-tale pre-texts. The authors question traditional social values as well as petrified cultural “norms”, rules, hierarchies, and images. At the same time, they often suggest a new order and new values. Consequently, the genre of fairy tale is given back to women—the social group so far discriminated, according to feminist discourse. By challenging the traditional socio-cultural context and constructing the new one, Carter, Lee, and Donoghue change the meaning of fairy tales. Therefore, classic fairy-tale stories become the subject of a postmodern, intertextual play.

    W artykule podjęta zostaje kwestia gatunku i gender w cyklu książek Żniwiarz autorstwa Pauliny Hendel. Pierwsza część artykułu skupia się na umiejscowieniu cyklu książek Hendel na tle polskiej literatury dla młodzieży, w szczególności w kontekście mody na słowiańskie motywy we współczesnej literaturze młodzieżowej, następnie zinterpretowane zostają niektóre słowiańskie motywy obecne w cyklu, wraz z pełnioną przez nie funkcją. W drugiej części artykułu zostaje poruszona tematyka z zakresu gender studies, w szczególności w kontekście pojawiającego się w powieściach slutshamingu i victimblamingu.
    The article addresses the issue of genre (genology) and gender in the book cycle The Reaper by Paulina Hendel. The first part of the article presents the position of Hendel’s book series in the field of Polish young adult literature, particularly in the current context of the popularity of Slavic motifs in contemporary juvenile literature, followed by an interpretation of some of the Slavic motifs present in the series and their function. The second part of the article examines issues in the field of gender studies, especially in the aspect of slutshaming and victimblaming that appear in the novels

    The paper observes the Slavic-inspired young adult fiction and fantasy that is a recent and unexplored phenomenon in the U.S. literature. The author focuses on Baba Yaga, a powerful witch and boogeyman from the Slavic folklore, and studies the sources about her and the interpretation of this ogress in Naomi Novik’s novel Uprooted, Catherynne M. Valente’s novel Deathless and Katherine Arden’s Winternight Trilogy. For these writers, Yaga embodies feminine power, knowledge, true vision, intuition and magic. At the same time, these authors try to move away from the fabulous Baba Yaga, either bringing her closer to the goddess of nature (Novik), or socializing and caricaturizing as much as possible (Valente), or humanizing (Arden). All the main heroines of the considered works evolve from a “maiden in trouble” to a “warrior maiden” who is able not only to help herself, but also to save others. It is concluded that the image of the Yaga warrior could reflect the ancient contacts of the Slavs, and, possibly, the Germans (Goths) with the Sarmatian or Greek women, the so called “amazons”, from the Black Sea or Azov coast. Accordingly, to a greater or lesser extent, the Slavic Yaga implements a feminist worldview, understandable to American readers, and acts as an assistant and a good advisor to the heroines on the path of their coming of age.

    In 2006 Maria Janion wrote in The Uncanny Slavdom that “the new narrative of the humanities can tell the story of our culture differentlyˮ. Since that time such 'new narratives' have multiplied literally right in front of our eyes. While in the late 2000s the existence of a distinct Slavic fantasy subgenre was a matter of controversy, hotly debated by both authors and academics, today its presence and popularity is too conspicuous to leave any room for doubt. Each year the market is flooded with dozens of new Slavic fantasy books, which are then discussed in countless blogs, vlogs, discussion groups, and podcasts. The growth of interest in Slavic fantasy is phenomenal and seems to be part of a larger trend gaining ground not just in Poland but also in other Slavic nations. This gives rise to a number of questions which this article tries to address: What is Slavic fantasy? What place does it occupy in modern popular culture? What effects, beneficial or less so, will it have?

    Der Beitrag geht der Frage der literarischen Darstellung von Adoleszenz in Verbindung mit der Migration nach. Das Thema ist sowohl wissenschaftlich, publizistisch, als auch literarisch weitgehend unerforscht. Dabei sind beide Prozesse einander äußerst ähnlich und können in Verbindung miteinander zu großen Störungen der Persönlichkeit sowie enormer Überforderung des jungen Menschen führen. Die Hauptfigur des Textes, ein adoleszentes Mädchen, durchlebt nach ihrer Ankunft in Deutschland Veränderungen auf sämtlichen Ebenen ihres Daseins. Im Beitrag geht es darum, aufzuzeigen, auf welche Aspekte die Aufmerksamkeit der Leser gerichtet wird und wie diese erzähltechnisch dargestellt werden.
    Artykuł poświęcony jest przedstawieniu problemu adolescencji w połączeniu z migracją. Temat ten pozostaje niezbadany naukowo czy publicystycznie, nie był częstym tematem dzieł literackich. Oba te procesy są jednak niezwykle zbliżone i w połączeniu ze sobą mogą prowadzić do znaczących zaburzeń osobowości oraz przytłaczać młodego człowieka. Główna bohaterka powieści, dorastająca dziewczyna, przeżywa po przyjeździe do Niemiec zmiany dotyczące niemalże każdego aspektu jej egzystencji. Celem artykułu jest wykazanie, na jakie aspekty zwraca uwagę autorka, jak również przy pomocy jakich środków narracji.
    The paper deals with the question of the literary representation of adolescence in connection with migration. The topic is largely unexplored, scientifically, journalistically and literarily. Both processes are extremely similar to each other and, combined with each other, can lead to great disturbances of the personality and enormous overburdening of the young person. The main character of the text, an adolescent girl, is experiencing changes on all levels of her existence when she arrives in Germany. The paper aims to show which aspects the reader’s attention is focused on and how they are presented in a narrative manner.

    One of the issues that emerges with regard to radical human enhancement is the destruction of the intergenerational connections. It is variously envisioned in science fiction, and we can speak of many possible plateaus on which the human continuity, which entails solidarity, can be contested. Contemporary young adult dystopias, such as Shusterman’s Unwind Dystology (2007-15) and The Arc of a Scythe (2016-) cycles, Beckett’s Genesis (2010), Patterson’s Maximum Ride (2005-15) or Wells’s Partials (2009-14), very often conjoin the intergenerational issues typical of juvenile fiction with bioethical concerns in the posthuman and transhuman world. I look at the speculative futures of intergenerational solidarity from the point of view of the biological continuity, the subjective continuity and postgenerationality in an immortal society. In the majority of cases it may be observed how the child-adultdichotomy, with the superimposed adult normativity prejudice, threatens the coexistence of trans- and posthumans with their “parents,” leading to the redefinition of altruism in the wake of the homicidal ALife apocalypse. The relatively broad spectrum of the cases and perspectives I have selected yields a fairly comprehensive picture of contemporary projections of intergenerational solidarity “after the genome” (Herrick 2013).

    Artykuł stanowi próbę teoretycznego sproblematyzowania zjawiska postfeminizmu w tekstach kultury popularnej oraz zidentyfikowania w tym kontekście istotnych problemów badawczych w odniesieniu do powieściowej fantastyki dla młodych dorosłych. Ponieważ szeroko pojęta fantastyka jest bardzo częstym wyborem czytelniczym młodych Polaków i Polek, autorka zakłada, że to właśnie fantastyka odgrywa ważną rolę w transmisji wzorców kulturowych, w tym także genderowych; stąd wywodzi potrzebę badania fantastycznych konstruktów dziewcząt i kobiet oraz identyfikację feministycznych i postfeministycznych komponentów opowieści, w których konstrukty te występują. W pierwszej części rozróżnia feminizm trzeciej fali i postfeminizm oraz przytacza istotne diagnozy i wnioski wypracowane na gruncie badań nad postfeminizmem w ostatnich dwóch dekadach. W drugiej – przybliża obserwacje i koncepcje dotyczące postfeministycznego wymiaru popkultury oraz przedstawia propozycje wykorzystywania ich w badaniach nad literaturą fantastyczną dla młodych odbiorców, uwzględniając literaturę wydawaną w Polsce, a więc rodzimą i przekładową.
    The article attempts to problematize the phenomenon of postfeminism in popular culture texts and identify significant research problems related to novels for young adults in this context. Since fantasy and science fiction are prevalent choices of young Poles, the author assumes that these genres play an important role in transmitting cultural patterns, including gender ones. Hence she derives the need to study the fantastic constructions of girls and women and identify the feminist and postfeminist components of the story in which these constructions occur. In the first part, she distinguishes between Third-Wave feminism and postfeminism. She cites important diagnoses and conclusions developed in research on postfeminism in the last two decades. In the second, she introduces the observations and concepts regarding the postfeminist dimension of popular culture and presents proposals for using them in research on fantastic literature for young audiences, considering native and translated literature published in Poland.

    Opis:
    Die Enteignungen jüdischer Unternehmer in der NS-Zeit und der Umgang der Nachkommen mit der verbrecherischen Familiengeschichte bilden den Angelpunkt des Jugendromans Mirjam Presslers "Die Zeit der schlafenden Hunde". Die Konfrontation mit dem jüdischen Opfer der Enteignung bewegt die jugendliche Protagonistin zur Aufdeckung der Wahrheit über die Übernahme des Familiengeschäfts durch ihren Großvater im Zuge der Arisierung. Das Problem wird im Roman im Prozess der Erinnerung aktualisiert und aus zwei Perspektiven – jener der Opfer und jener der Täter – differenziert dargestellt. Der Beitrag beleuchtet, wie dieses Problem adäquat zur Spezifik der KJL, aber auch unter Berücksichtigung aktueller Ereignisse behandelt wird, und zugleich, wie dank der Darstellung von komplexen, auf verschiedenen Zeitebenen situierten Bildern, ein möglichst wirklichkeitsnahes Nachzeichnen der Reflexionsprozesse der Hauptfigur erfolgt.
    Wywłaszczenia mienia żydowskiego w czasie nazizmu i rozrachunek z rodzinną historią podjęty przez potomków sprawców stoją w centrum powieści Mirjam Pressler "Die Zeit der schlafenden Hunde". Młoda protagonistka dociera do prawdy o przejęciu przez dziadka rodzinnego interesu w drodze aryzacji. Problematyka ta – dyskutowana poprzez wspomnienia przeszłych wydarzeń – ukazana jest w sposób zróżnicowany, zarówno z perspektywy sprawcy, jak i ofiary. W artykule wykazano, że fikcyjna opowieść – przy uwzględnieniu specyfiki literatury dla dzieci i młodzieży – odnosi się do aktualnych wydarzeń. Dzięki wprowadzeniu złożonych obrazów usytuowanych na różnych płaszczyznach czasowych oraz zastosowaniu nowoczesnych technik narracji powstaje autentyczność przy eksponowaniu procesów wewnętrznych zachodzących w protagonistce.
    Expropriation of Jewish property in the Nazi era and dealing with criminal history of the family by its descendants constitute the pivot of the young-adult novel "Die Zeit der schlafenden Hunde" (Let Sleeping Dogs Lie) by Mirjam Pressler. A confrontation with a Jewish victim of the expropriation induces the adolescent protagonist to expose the truth about the acquisition of the family business by her grandfather in the course of Aryanization. The issue is refreshed in the process of remembering and presented from two different perspectives: the one of the perpetrator and the one of the victim. The paper examines how the issue is dealt with taking into consideration the specifics of children’s and youth literature. The context of current affairs is also considered, as well as how, owing to the modern manner in which complex images at various time levels are presented, verisimilitude is achieved concerning the processes occurring in the main protagonist’s mind.

    Artykuł koncentruje się na omówieniu serii powieści Alfreda Szklarskiego o Tomku Wilmowskim w kontekście zmieniających się konwencji powieści przygodowych dla młodzieży. W pierwszej części autor skupia się na klasycznych utworach podróżniczych z przełomu wieków oraz polskiej powieści kolonialnej. Następnie analizuje jeden z utworów przygodowych napisanych przez Szklarskiego w okresie okupacji oraz rozpatruje powieść Tomek w tarapatach jako ogniwo pośrednie między twórczością wojenną a cyklem o Wilmowskich. W dalszej kolejności omawia typy utworów przygodowych popularnych w okresie PRL-u. W części ostatniej, wykorzystując kategorie przygody, bohatera i nieprawdopodobieństwa, poddaje refleksji sposób, w jaki na kartach cyklu ujawniają się klasyczne cechy tekstów przygodowych.
    The article discusses Alfred Szklarski’s book series Przygody Tomka [The Adventures of Tomek] about Tomek Wilmowski, and focuses on shifts undergoing in young adult adventure fiction conventions. In the first part of the article the author concentrates on classic travel fiction composed at the turn of the century as well as Polish colonial novel. He then analyses one of the adventure works written by Szklarski in the period of Nazi occupation and further on studies the novel Tomek w tarapatach [Tomek Gets into Trouble] as an indirect link between Szklarski’s wartime literary work and his book series about Wilmowski. The article then goes on to discuss the types of adventure stories that were popular in the period of PRL (the Polish People’s Republic). In the final part, the author, taking advantage of such categories as ‘adventure,’ ‘hero,’ and ‘improbability,’ deliberates on how the classic characteristics of adventure texts are revealed on the pages of the book series in question.
