The readers of Rozalia Wojkiewicz’s book W spektrum Wyspiańskiego. Witraż w poezji Młodej Polski (In Wyspiański’s spectrum. Stained glass windows in Young Poland Poetry) are presented with a unique study of Stanisław Wyspiański, his work, his journey along the trail of “barbaric” cathedrals, his passion and aspirations, the spirit of the era and, above all, an analysis of stained glass – a special type of text reflected not only in poetry and one which grew out of man’s aspirations to understand what is hidden, created, fragile and at the same time incomprehensible. The analysis conducted by Rozalia Wojkiewicz serves as a gradual, planned entry into the world of the Young Poland stained glass collection, explains the reasons for the interest in the subject, and presents the valuable state of research on it and the method of its observation.

Opis:
Stanisław Wyspiański (1869–1907) was the Polish dramatist, the poet, besides the illustrator and the painter, one of the best known artist of the Young Poland movement. His journey to Europe (particulary to Paris) became very important experience in his life. He discovered the value of loneliness, he had to be alone – as an artist and as a man. He was called “a hermit from Cracow” and for this reason his genius was not always appreciated. However, at the end of life, Wyspiański undergoes a significant transformation: he feels a strong connection to community, as a member of the nation and society, as well as a host.

Opis:
In Polish dictionaries, opposition is defined primarily as disagreement, no agreement. In the article Is it easy to hide mutual disagreement? – about linguistic manifestations of opposition in Stanisław Wyspiański's "The Wedding" Agata Pławecka examines opposition as an act of speech which emerges from disagreement and at the same time reveals it, constituting one of the stages of an argumentative dialogue. The purpose of the text is to present linguistic signals of opposition to socially established ideas about the representatives of confronting social strata and to describe how these signals function in a literary text. On their basis, the chapter reconstructs sources of social disagreement from the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth century. Research was conducted on Stanisław Wyspiański’s drama "The Wedding", which characterizes the Polish society of that time. The author of the article focuses on the description of opposition formulas which, according to the adopted methodology of Christian Plantin, introduce the opposite discourse and argumentation of the other person. The study shows that opposition is an important element of dialogues that appear in "The Wedding". Linguistic signals of opposition are revealed by the characters of the drama despite the social wedding situation, which would force all invited guests to maintain equality and mutual agreement. Analyses demonstrate that the literary text contains various types of opposition. This article presents divisions into: 1) independent and dependent oppositions; 2) explicit and implicit oppositions. Results indicate that the sources of social disagreement in the Young Poland era included, among others, factors such as: differences in the way of perceiving the world caused by having alternative types of knowledge about reality (resulting from different ways of creating this knowledge; thinking based on stereotypes vs thinking based on experience and observations); deficits in knowledge about the habits and mentality of different social strata members; ignorance, prejudice, aversion, and contempt for Otherness, associated with an exaggerated conviction of one's superiority; lack of faith in the possibility of uniting different communities, lack of willingness to really come to know another person and confront the common beliefs about represedifferent social group representatives with reality.

Opis:
The article treats about a forgotten play Zaduszki (All Souls’ Day) by Stefan Grabiński, widely known as the author of fantastic literature and horror stories. The play Zaduszki consists of three parts: 1. Strzygoń. Klechda zaduszna; 2. W dzień zaduszny; 3. Sen Krysty. Misterium zaduszne. First of them is written in folk dialect. The second one, sometimes named „the longest one-act play ever staged in Polish theatre”, considers a problem of a fault and a punishment. The third one, similarly to the first one, presents folk beliefs in supernatural phenomena which take place on All Souls’ Day. Moreover, it partly resembles a mystery play. Although the trilogy got an unfavourable reception (it was shown only seven times in Juliusz Słowacki Theatre in Kraków), it may be considered as an ambitious attempt to match the heritage of Stanisław Wyspiański – according to Grabiński, the greatest authority in the field of theatre.

Opis:
The subject of the article is Stanisław Wyspiański’s bookplate design for Lucjan Rydel, drawn by watercolour on grey paper (23,8 x 16,9 cm). As a standing rectangle, it shows symmetrically arranged twigs with flower buds, which resemble magnolias and freesias. e signs that appear next to the twigs, which are painted emerald green and light violet, are Z Księgozbioru (“From the book collection”) as well as Dr (?) LRydla [“Dr (?) LRydel’s”], the latter being the facsimile of a signature. It can be assumed that this drawing was Wyspiański’s present for his friend, gifted sometime in the years 1894–1899. Rydel never made a decision to have it printed, which undoubtedly contributed to its status of being unknown among experts and absent from the topic literature, either printed, handwritten or epistolary. The piece is nevertheless particularly important for the history of Polish bookplates. is seemingly ordinary drawing appears revolutionary when one considers that it shows an emblem shield deprived of the actual emblem, lacks an epic theme, does not have any text, and features art nouveau embellishments as well as a handwritten signature of the owner. It can be compared to the works created already in the first decade of the twentieth century by artists such as Jan Bukowski, Antoni Procajłowicz and Kazimierz Sichulski.

The author describes the history of the mural in the parish church of the Holy Cross, Cracow. The original painting, dating from the late 16th century, was revealed in the course of renovation of the church in 1896. The notable degree of moistness of the wall was responsible for the mural being destroyed past restoration. Under the circumstances Stanisław Wyspiański made a copy of the painting discussed and on its basis a new polichromy was applied. That way of conservation proceeding was criticized, however, at the time. The following part of the article deals with the origin of the ideological substance of the mural. According to the author’s supposition its prototype was a Netherlandian drawing referring to the texts by Ignatius Yoyola and the verses of the Bible. The present mural, dating from the end of the 19th century is a copy without the original layer. Nevertheless, in the auhor’s opinion it is worth being recognized as a historical object, on account of the 16th century substance preserved therein and the value of a restored dating from late 19th century monument.

Opis:
Artistic activity at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries resulted not only in the development of literature and art, but also functional art and crafts, e.g. graphics and book decoration. Apart from artistic press, it was clearly visible in the phenomenon of the so-called beautiful book. The most distinguished artists of that period: Stanisław Wyspiański, Jan Bukowski, Antoni Procajłowicz – designed covers, vignettes and decorations of the best-known literary works. Lucjan Rydel, who found himself among those artists, was a friend of Wyspiański and cooperated with him, which meant that their first joint works heralded the discussed phenomenon at the Vistula River. This big event was the publication of Rydel’s translation of Iliada with the pictures and illustrations by Wyspiański, who also decorated Rydels’ volumes of poetry, using floral motifs, which were typical in his later work. Also other artists in their ornaments have tried to refer to the motifs which were dominant in Rydel’s works. Thanks to this practice, some editions of dramas (1902, designed by A. Procajłowicz) and Bajka o Kasi i królewiczu (1904, designed by S. Dębicki) should be regarded as the most renowned works of the ‘beautiful book’ trend, not only in Poland, but also in East-Central Europe. This paper focuses on the most representative ‘beautiful books’, based on Lucjan Rydel’s works from the period 1896–1911.
