Opis:
Condition monitoring of machines working under non-stationary operations is one of the most challenging problems in maintenance. A wind turbine is an example of such class of machines. One of effective approaches may be to identify operating conditions and investigate their influence on used diagnostic features. Commonly used methods based on measurement of electric current, rotational speed, power and other process variables require additional equipment (sensors, acquisition cards) and software. It is proposed to use advanced signal processing techniques for instantaneous shaft speed recovery from a vibration signal. It may be used instead of extra channels or in parallel as signal verification.

Opis:
Vertical profiles of marine aerosol size distribution and concentration in the marine boundary layer over surf zones depend strongly on wind speed, direction and duration as well as the sea bottom profile. The measurements in the present study were carried out in various seasons of the year with all these factors being taken into consideration. The data with respect to offshore winds were neglected in the calculations, since in such cases the major aerosol contribution was from terrigenous and anthropogenic particles. It was confirmed that in the range of wind speeds from 1 m s−1 to 12 m s−1 there were measurable differences in the concentrations, particularly in the size distribution of marine aerosol particles at two stations differing with respect to their sea bottom profiles.

High-resolution wind series in the southern Baltic Sea for the period of 1958–2007 are analysed to generate representative climate input conditions for a multi-scale morphodynamic model to simulate decadal-to-centennial coastline change. Four seasonal wind classes, each characterized by a predominant distribution of wind direction and speed, are derived from statistical analysis. Further calibration of this statistical description is done by sensitivity studies of the model to generate similar coastline changes of the Darss-Zingst peninsula as the measured data for the last century. The coastline change of this area is then projected for the next 300 years based on four different climate scenarios, through which impacts of accelerated sea level rise and storm frequency on the long-term coastline change are quantified.

Opis:
The paper has investigated the effect of wind speed on selected thermal characteristics of the contemporary ACCR line. As wind speed functions, heating curves, stationary temperature profiles, steady-state current ratings and thermal time constants, have been determined. The composite core (Al–Al2O3) and the Al–Zr alloy braid were modeled as porous solids. As a result, the physical model is composed of a solid cylinder and a hollow cylinder with different material parameters of the above-mentioned elements. The mathematical model was formulated as the boundary-initial problem of the parabolic heat equation. The problem was solved by the state-superposition of and variable-separation method. On this basis, a computer program was developed in the Mathematica 10.4 environment and the velocity characteristics sought for were plotted. The results obtained analytically were positively verified by the finite-element method in the NISA v.16 environment. The physical interpretation of the determined characteristics has been given.

Opis:
The Arctic Ocean (AO) is an important basin for global oceanic carbon dioxide (CO2) uptake, but the mechanisms controlling air—sea gas fluxes are not fully understood, especially over short and long timescales. The oceanic sink of CO2 is an important part of the global carbon budget. Previous studies have shown that in the AO differences in the partial pressure of CO2 (DpCO2) and gas transfer velocity (k) both contribute significantly to interannual air—sea CO2 flux variability, but that k is unimportant for multidecadal variability. This study combined Earth Observation (EO) data collected in 2010 with the in situ pCO2 dataset from Takahashi et al. (2009) (T09) using a recently developed software toolbox called FluxEngine to determine the importance of k and DpCO2 on CO2 budgets in two regions of the AO — the Greenland Sea (GS) and the Barents Sea (BS) with their continental margins. Results from the study indicate that the variability in wind speed and, hence, the gas transfer velocity, generally play a major role in determining the temporal variability of CO2 uptake, while variability in monthly DpCO2 plays a major role spatially, with some exceptions.

The article deals with the problem of ship’s ocean route programming. For masters during planning the ocean most convenient route lots of factors are very important such as among others: current, forecast weather, criteria and restriction, speed and fuel characteristic of ships on waves and wind and so on. These elements when are properly identify and adopted allow the master for making an effective ship’s course and speed decision. The aim of research is to show how the SPOS system is treated during the ocean’s ship route. 39 captains of PŻM ships during the year of 2014 answered on 9 questions of questionnaire which were concerned the degree of utilization of SPOS (Ship Performance Optimization System) during the operation of their ships. All the masters confirmed that they use of SPOS system as a browser weather, while only 25.6% of masters confirmed that they also use the SPOS system as a tool in planning the route. They also repeatedly pointed out, however, that SPOS has some of limitations such as not limited information about ice cover or tropical cyclones, etc. In conclusion, it can be assess that the SPOS system is satisfactorily used on ships as a browser forecast, but does not work well in planning the trip by navigators.

Focus of the vibration expert community shifts more and more towards diagnosing machines subjected to varying rotational speeds and loads. Such machines require order analysis for proper fault detection and identification. In many cases phase markers (tachometers, encoders, etc) are used to help performing the resampling of the vibration signals to remove the speed fluctuations and smearing from the spectrum (order tracking). However, not all machines have the facility to install speed tracking sensors, due to design or cost reasons, and the signal itself has to then be used to extract this information. This paper is focused on the problem of speed tracking in wind turbines, which represent typical situations for speed and load variation. The basic design of a wind turbine is presented. Two main types of speed control i.e. stall and pitch control are presented. The authors have investigated two methods of speed tracking, using information from the signal (without relying on a speed signal). One method is based on extracting a reference signal to use as a tachometer, while the other is phase-based (phase demodulation). Both methods are presented and applied to the vibration data from real wind turbines. The results are compared with each other and with the actual speed data.

Opis:
This paper presents the variants of wind turbine location based on the measurements of air velocity in different parts of urban development. Wind-power plants are most often associated with non-urbanized areas due to the small rough terrain. In the case of urbanized areas, the possibility of using wind turbines is very limited due to the considerable rough terrain. In the case of built-up areas it is possible to use the so-called urban vertical wind turbines that can operate at relatively low air velocities. The location of the wind power plant within the building should be measured by the wind speed. Wind speed measurements were carried out at various locations in the Białystok Technical University on the roof of the building, on the wall of the building and between buildings. Measurements of air velocity were carried out using permanently installed anemometers.

All ships experience an air and wind resistance while under way of sea, and they may experience adverse effects on wind while manoeuvring in harbours and limited waterways. The wind resistance is proportional to relative wind speed squared, wind direction and the projected windage area of the ship. The paper describes the effect of wind pressure into the ship’s superstructures and houses on ship manoeuvrability, in the range of the wind speed, for the ship which is with the large windage area. The above is one of the recommended information to be included in the ship’s manoeuvring booklet, as per IMO Resolution A.601(15). In sea practice, the manoeuvring characteristics in wind, as wind forces and moments, course-keeping limitation, and drifting under wind influence are fare from these estimated. The results obtained during the several years of practice in ship’s exploitation are included in this paper.

During ship operation, one of the most important tasks is forecasting the ocean route. One of the criteria for forecasting is the minimum fuel consumption. Fuel consumption and associated emissions are also very important for other criteria. In common use, as well as in various publications, the results of calculations of fuel consumption obtained from simplified algorithms are presented. The article presents a mathematical model for calculating fuel consumption for a floating vessel in various weather conditions. In this model different criteria for controlling the propulsion engine were used by changing the fuel dose. The results of the calculations included include: fuel consumption, power of the propulsion engine and operating speed of the ship in varying weather conditions

In this paper a new method based on additional ship resistance dependent on mean statistical parameters of wave and wind occurring on a given shipping route, is presented. The mean long-term service speed is calculated on the basis of the calculated additional resistance and the screw propeller and propulsion engine parameters. Also, a new definition of service margin and a way of its calculation is presented apart from the results of the mean service speed calculation depending on ship’s type and size and shipping route.
