    The present article engages with the eponymous character of Oscar Wilde’s “Salomé” and focuses on her subversion of the patriarchal rules, and on her attempts at seducing the prophet Jokanaan. Wilde’s “Salomé” becomes “an erotic symbol of daring, transgression, and perversity” (Sloan 112). She wants to look at Jokanaan, as well as to be touched by him and openly states her great desire for him, using the imagery taken from the biblical “Song of Songs” to express her passion. Moreover, the Princess skillfully adopts and reverses the male gaze to manipulate others and go beyond the patriarchal constraints at Herod’s court. She becomes aware that the only way to reach her goals is to look actively and evade being a mere object of the male gaze. The article shows that the imagery employed in the eponymous character’s speeches contributes to her portrayal as a seductress, also accentuating her rebellion, and analyzes how the Princess transgresses the patriarchal constraints through appropriating the male gaze.

    A little more than century apart from each other, Oscar Wilde and Marina Carr each took clear inspiration from antiquity to write intensely symbolic drama for their times, featuring powerful female characters with fatal impulses. The article intends to examine resonances between Oscar Wilde’s Salome and The Duchess of Padua and the more recent dramas by Marina Carr. In their complex interactions of desire, guilt, evocations of blood sacrifice, and an impulse towards death, these plays may offer a possibility of transcendence.

    Based on a corpus of nine tales by Oscar Wilde (making up the two well-known volumes: The Happy Prince and Other Stories, 1888, and A House of Pomegranates, 1891), along with nine Romanian versions of these texts, the present article aims at reflecting on the linguo-semantic expression of emotion (with a focus on subjective adjectives like little, big, poor etc.), as well as making an inventory of the compensation strategies used by translators, taking into account the fact that most Romanian versions are addressed to children, and also that translation criticism, just like translating itself, is a matter of instinct, taste, affinity, finally emotion.

    The works of Oscar Wilde form a link between late Victorian and modernist literature. His art and wit have continued to exert a great influence on other artists. The art of Morrissey, a legendary poet and singer, may serve as a case in point. Thus, this paper aims at presenting Morrissey’s works and persona as a continuation of Oscar Wilde’s artistic legacy. The article presents their attitude to life and to the process of creation. In view of that, breaking with traditional moral code, the artists’ fascination with beauty, their defense of humanity and all possible freedoms, as well as earnestness of their works, is depicted as the key to the analysis of their art. Thus, the writers’ rebellion against society and modern life, along with propounding aestheticism, will be investigated in this paper

    The paper addresses Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray and its specific confessional strategy, which is characterized by aestheticization of personal experience. The choice of means is correspondent to intellectual, aesthetic and ethic positions developed by Wilde as a critic in his theoretical works. Confessional Wilde puts forward style, imagination and reinvention of the Self with the help of masks, scripts and allusions to literary and non-literary sources. It is claimed that there are various allusions to Greek life and its cultural reinvestigation in Wilde’s time, and to different aspects of Christian aesthetics and mythology.

    Considering the fact that postmodernism may, from a certain viewpoint, be called “neo-Decadence” and Oscar Wilde a “pre-postmodernist,” this essay approaches the affinity between Decadence and postmodernism in terms of their shared post-classical and parodist condition. Indicating the insufficiency of the romantic/classicist model, and taking as the point of departure Symons’s description of Decadence as the disfiguring of the “classic,” it looks at Decadent subversions through Linda Hutcheon’s twofold parodist paradigm. It shows how Decadence, which is doubly parodist – in the stylistic sense (as in Max Beerbohm) and in social sense (as in Wilde) – subverts its classical heritage, thus, anticipating postmodernist strategies.

    The article argues that Lytton Strachey’s Eminent Victorians (1918) exemplifies the use of modernist irony, as defined by AlanWilde in Horizons of Assent: Modernism, Postmodernism, and the Ironic Imagination (1981). The Polish translation of Strachey’s book, which includes only two of the four original essays, while losing the ironic undertones of the title in Ludzie epoki Wiktorii, keeps some significant characteristics discussed by Wilde, such as disjunction, paradox and parataxis. Strachey’s disjunctive irony, his awareness of life’s incongruities and disparities, his perspective of distance and detachment, as well as his employment of narrative techniques suggesting discontinuity, fleeting impression and subjectivity – all lie at the root of the new form of biography as a genre.

    Oscar Wilde’s and Morrissey’s lives seem to be full of contradictions. Their art constitutes a reaction against materialism, traditional lifestyle and social standards, as well as defence of individualism and freedom of thought. So far, their works have been analysed only from a very limited perspective of the tension between aesthetics and ethics. Nevertheless, it is worth mentioning that what prevails in their art is the state of ambivalence and ambiguity in relation to the issues connected with religion and morality, innocence and experience, life and death. This article aims at demonstrating multiplicity of personalities of the artists mentioned and ethical ambivalences of their works. Taken together, Wilde and Morrissey’s creative outputs present a clash between different spheres of life, the divided consciousness and the split between body and soul. Thus, the oscillation between opposite standpoints and values excluding each other is not only the result of the artists’ personal experience but it may symbolise the paradox and absurdity of the human existence as well.

    Na dunajski univerzi izobraženi slavist Ivan Prijatelj (1875—1937), aktivni sopotnik pesniške skupine 'slovenske moderne', se je uveljavil predvsem kot vpliven literarni zgodovinar. Z literaturo pa se je vse življenje ukvarjal tudi kot esejist in prevajalec, ker je hotel spoznavati pomembne, še zlasti sodobne evropske avtorje in umetnostne smeri ter z njimi seznanjati rojake. Informacijo o angleškem pisatelju, ki je takrat zbujal pozornost v vzhodni in zahodni Ev‑ ropi, je zgostil v revijalnem prispevku Oskar Wilde (1907), katerega večji del predstavlja prevod Wildovih aforizmov o umetnosti in kritiki. Poslovenjeni pa so iz poljščine, po knjigi Adolfa Nowaczyńskega Oskar Wilde. Studjum. Aforyzmy. Nowele (1906), v kateri je Wilde predstavljen obširneje in bolj vsestransko. Prijateljev prevod je tematsko enovitejši, toda v njegovem prevod‑ nem opusu edini, ki ni narejen neposredno iz izvirnika. S prevodom Nowaczyńskega se ne ujema popolnoma, skladen pa je s kratko poetiko prevoda, ki jo je napisal kot uvodno poglavje svoje zgodnejše prevodoslovne razprave Puškin v slovenskih prevodih (1901). Njeno izhodišče je ugo‑ tovitev, da je prevod v književnosti majhnega naroda, kakršen je slovenski, nepogrešljiv, ker jo povezuje s književnostmi drugih narodov z informiranjem in vzgojo domačih bralcev in korigi‑ ranjem lokalnih artističnih standardov. Za ustrezno opravljanje teh funkcij mora ohraniti pristnost izvirnika in se hkrati prilagoditi ciljni kulturi, da v njej deluje kot domače delo. Temu primerno je zaznamovan ne samo z avtorjevo, ampak vsaj deloma tudi s prevajalčevo kreativno osebnostjo.Manjši odmiki od izvirnika v prevodih Nowaczyńskega in Prijatelja, ki se tu in tam razhajata tudi med sabo, ostajajo v okvirih priporočene 'zlate srednje poti' med ohranjanjem avtorjevih in‑ tencij in prevajalčevih svoboščin, namenjenih čim večji učinkovitosti in prepričljivosti preveden‑ ega besedila.
    The Slavic scholar Ivan Prijatelj (1875—1937), who received his university education in Vienna and was a contemporary and collaborator of the group of Slovene writers known as the »Slovene Modernists« (slovenska moderna), established himself primarily as an influential liter‑ ary historian. Apart from that, he developed his interests in literature as an essayist and translator, being eager to become familiar with important authors and literary currents, especially modern European ones, and to make them accessible to Slovene readers. He succinctly presented the English writer, who at the time garnered attention in Eastern and in Western Europe, in the journal article Oskar Wilde (1907), which is a translation of Wilde’s aphorisms on art and on criticism. They were translated into Slovene from Polish, on the basis of Oskar Wilde. Studjum. Aforyzmy. Nowele, a book by Adolf Nowaczyński (1906), in which Wilde is dealt with in a more extensive and multi ‑faceted manner. Prijatelj’s version, which is thematically homogeneous, is the only one among his translations that is not based directly on the source text. It does not always follow Nowaczyński’s translation, but is consistent with the poetics of translation sketched out by Prijatelj in the introductory chapter to his study on Pushkin in Slovene translations (1901). The study presupposes that for the literature of a small nation such as Slovenia, transla‑ tion is indispensable in as far as it enables that literature to become connected to other national literatures; in actual fact, translations are considered as a means of informing and educating target readers as well as of correcting local literary standards. In order to perform these functions in a satisfactory way, a translation must preserve the original’s authenticity, while at the same time adapting to the target culture and naturally integrating into it. Accordingly, a translated text does not only bear a mark of the author’s creative genius, but, to an extent, also of that of the translator. Some minor shifts with respect to the English original are observable in Prijatelj’s and Nowaczyński’s translations, which in some points differ also from each other, and remain within the recommended middle way, which makes it possible for the translator to take into account the author’s intentions, while allowing himself the necessary freedom, so as to produce an effective and convincing target text.

    Od profanum do sacrum. Transformacje przestrzeni więziennej w „Więźniu Czyllonu” G.G. Byrona i „Balladzie o więzieniu w Reading” O. Wilde’a Artykuł poświęcony jest dwóm utworom o tematyce doświadczenia więziennego: „Więźniowi Czylonu” George’a Gordona Byrona i „Balladzie o więzieniu w Reading” Oskara Wilde’a. Wykorzystując pojęcie „przestrzeni fabuły” (story space) Marie-Laure Ryan, artykuł omawia utwory pod kątem ewolucji postrzegania więzienia, do jakiej dochodzi pod wpływem doświadczeń skazańców. Bohater Byrona, po wielu latach cierpień, zaczyna traktować loch jak swój drugi dom, uświęcony obecnością w nim grobów pochowanych tam braci. U Wilde’a także ma miejsce zmiana percepcji więzienia, będąca wynikiem duchowej przemiany, jaką przechodzą skazańcy. Cela—świat koszmaru, opresji więziennego życia—staje się miejscem modlitwy, umocnienia wiary. W obydwu utworach, można wnioskować, dochodzi do przemiany sfery profanum w sferę sacrum.
    This study focuses on two prison poems: “The Prisoner of Chillon” by G.G. Byron and “The Ballad of Reading Gaol” by O. Wilde. It highlights the ordeal of the inmates with the emphasis on the change in their perception of the prison space. Based on M.-L. Ryan’s definition of story space, it is argued that the changing perception of space in the poems reflects the spiritual transformation the protagonists undergo. The experience of confinement leads, in the case of Byron’s protagonist, to the acceptance of prison life to the point of the dungeon becoming “a second home,” sacred to him as a site of his brothers’ burial. In Wilde’s poem incarceration has a transformative function, culminating in spiritual awakening and in the development of faith in Christ’s redemption. As a result of the change in both poems, prison becomes a space of prayer, turning thereby from the profane into the sacred.

    Oscar Wilde. Mistrz ciętej riposty i błyskotliwego aforyzmu a jednocześnie przenikliwy obserwator wyższej klasy społeczeństwa wiktoriańskiego. W swojej twórczości wielokrotnie krytykuje społeczeństwo brytyjskiego dekadentyzmu, jednak nigdy w sposób oczywisty. Najlep-szym tego przykładem jest sztuka Salomé, przez wielu krytyków traktowana jako dramat czy też klasyczna tragedia, będąca jednak zawoalowaną drwiną a nawet metaforą zdegenerowanych wyższych sfer brytyjskiego fi n de siècle. Autor celowo defamiliaryzuje sztukę poprzez osadzenie akcji w czasach biblij nych w celu nie tylko spotęgowania jej odbioru, ale także zapobiegnięcia automatyzacji percypowania. Dzięki temu Salomé jest nie tylko głównym obrazem archetypu femme fatale czyli kobiety fatalnej, ale staje się także samoświadomym i samorefl eksyjnym satyrycznym krytycyzmem. Jednakże taka interpretacja możliwa jest tylko przy postmodernistycznym spojrzeniu na teorię parodii i autoironii reprezentowaną m.in. przez Lindę Hutcheon czy Michele Hannoosh
    In his play Salomé, Oscar Wilde provides readers with the veiled commentary on the vices of nineteenth century bourgeois society. He sets the action in Biblical times in order to point out the characteristic qualities of the Victorian man by means of defamiliarization. Wilde manages to heighten the awareness of his reading public, not only by the use of such a ploy, but also - most importantly - by skilful deployment of parody, which once again allows him to delude his contemporaries with a ‘knife in the pillow’ device. Indeed, even though the reading of Salomé in terms of its parodic quality at fi rst might seem as atypical, it reinforces the play’s deeply ironic and critical overtone and allows multi-layered interpretation. Therefore, it is due only to such a post-modernist analysis that the play can be understood as both a self-conscious and self-refl exive criticism, and an extended metaphor of the fi n de siècle upper class society.

    W artykule omówiono poglądy społeczno-polityczne Oscara Wilde’a wyrażone przez niego w stosunkowo mało znanym eseju politycznym pt. The Soul of Man under Socialism (Dusza ludzka w socjalizmie), opublikowanym w 1891 roku, w którym „król estetów” przedstawia swój dość osobliwy światopogląd socjalistyczny i krytykuje altruizm oraz filantropię jako działania, które nie likwidują nędzy. Z charakterystycznym aforystycznym dowcipem i wdziękiem Wilde snuje swoją wizję socjalizmu estetycznego z perspektywy artysty, a nie filozofa czy ideologa. Twierdzi, że socjalizm zniweluje różnice społeczne i majątkowe oraz doprowadzi do nieznanego w kapitalizmie ożywienia twórczych zdolności artystów, którzy będą realizować swoje cele artystyczne bez obawy ulegania koniunkturalizmowi i komercji. Co sprawia, że esej Wilde’a, mimo że zawiera anachroniczne i skompromitowane przez historię pomysły dotyczące wizji socjalizmu jako idealnego ustroju stołecznego, nadal stanowi interesującą lekturę i jest ciekawym kawałkiem prozy późnowiktoriańskiej wywołującym u czytelnika głębszą refleksję? Próbą odpowiedzi na to pytanie jest niniejszy artykuł.
    In his article, the author discussed the Oscar Wilde’s socio-political views expressed by him in a relatively recondite essay entitled The Soul of Man under Socialism, published in 1891, in which the ‘king of aesthetes’ presents his quite a specific socialist ideology and criticises altruism and philanthropy as the measures that do not liquidate poverty. With a characteristic aphoristic with and charm, Wilde spins his vision of aesthetic socialism from the perspective of an artist and not a philosopher or an ideologist. He alleges that socialism will level social and financial differences and will lead to an unknown in capitalism recovery of creative abilities of artists who will be accomplishing their artistic objectives free of the threat of being subjective to opportunism and commerce. What causes that the Wilde’s essay, despite it contains the outdated and compromised by the history ideas concerning the vision of socialism as an ideal social system, still is an interesting reading and is an interesting piece of the late Victorian prose evoking a deeper reflection of the reader? This article is an attempt to answer this question.

    W artykule dokonano analizy porównawczej wczesnej twórczości Zofii Nałkowskiej i Iryny Wilde pod względem nowatorstwa zastosowanych technik pisarskich. W toku analiz wiele uwagi poświęcono motywom wspólnym obu pisarkom, zwłaszcza eksponowaniu przez nie wewnętrz-nego świata kobiety. Szczegółowo zanalizowano wypowiedzi współcze-snych krytyków na temat dzieł obu pisarek, wskazując pewne paralele.
    The article presents a comparative analysis of early works by Zofia Nałkowska and Iryna Vilde due to their innovatory character in the literature of their era. The article examined the critical assessment of their works in detail and points out certain parallels in the reception of critics at the time. In the analysis,special attention has been given to similar themes in the works by both these writers, especially their focus on women’s inner world and search for new means of artistic expression.

    W październiku 2018 roku odbyło się w Gdańsku wydarzenie Nakład własny. Sympozjum o niezależnych wydawnictwach artystycznych zorganizowane przez Fundację Kultury Wizualnej Chmura. Program sympozjum obejmował m.in. ekspozycję niezależnych wydawnictw artystycznych, które były wydawane od drugiej połowy lat osiemdziesiątych do lat dziewięćdziesiątych XX w. przede wszystkim w Gdańsku. Z perspektywy czasu czytelna jest wyjątkowość tego okresu przez wzgląd na dynamiczne zmiany społeczno-polityczne zachodzące w ówczesnej Polsce, które wywarły silny wpływ również na działalność artystyczną. Niniejszy tekst ma na celu zwrócenie uwagi na problematykę związaną z konserwacją i archiwizacją druków artystycznych. Innym istotnym aspektem była potrzeba zaprezentowania wydawnictw ze względu na ich wartość historyczną i artystyczną. Są to obiekty tworzone absolutnie niezależnie, w środowisku opozycji społecznej i politycznej, często wyróżniając się niekonwencjonalnym stylem artystycznym. Jednocześnie na wystawie zaprezentowane zostały prace twórcy reprezentujący różne postawy artystyczne, którzy jednak potrafili wspólnie wykreować środowisko artystyczne, które stało się ważnym ośrodkiem twórczym na arenie ogólnopolskiej. Większości ówczesnych działań artystycznych towarzyszyły niszowe publikacje, początkowo powstające przy użyciu wszelkiego typu powielaczy, kserokopiarek, a z czasem w profesjonalnych zakładach poligraficznych. Zmiany społeczno-polityczne, które nastąpiły w następstwie reform ustrojowych w latach dziewięćdziesiątych dały również nowe możliwości technologiczne. Ewolucja ta została zilustrowana doborem eksponatów na wystawie Nakład własny. Wśród zgromadzonych obiektów znajdziemy zarówno te, które inspirowane były stylistyką Neue Wilde, jak również takie, które miały już profesjonalnie zaprojektowaną szatę graficzną z tekstem krytycznym oraz ilustracjami.
    In October 2018, the Nakład własny [Self-published work]. Symposium on independent artistic publications was organized by the Chmura Visual Culture Foundation in Gdańsk. The symposium program included, among other things, an exhibition of independent artistic publications, which were issued from the second half of the eighties to the nineties of the twentieth century, primarily in Gdańsk. From the perspective of time, the uniqueness of this period is clearly visible due to the dynamic socio-political changes taking place in Poland during this period, which had a strong impact on artistic activity as well. This text aims to draw attention to issues related to the preservation and archiving of art prints. Another important aspect was the need to present publications due to their historical and artistic value. These are objects created absolutely independently, in the environment of social and political opposition, often distinguished by unconventional artistic style. At the same time, the exhibition presented works of the artist representing various artistic attitudes, who, however, were able to create an artistic environment that became an important creative centre in the nationwide arena. Most of the contemporary artistic activities were accompanied by niche publications, initially created using all types of duplicators, photocopiers, and, in time, in professional printing plants. Socio-political changes that followed political reform in the nineties also gave rise to new technological opportunities. This evolution was illustrated by the selection of exhibits at the exhibition. Among the collected objects, we can find both those inspired by the style of Neue Wilde, as well as those that already had a professionally designed graphic design with critical text and illustrations.
