The text contains source material, that is Jan Błoński's letters to Kazimierz Wierzyński written in the period between 1961 and 1964, when Błoński lectured at the University of Sorbonne. In the article six letters are presented from the package consisting of twenty-eight units kept in the Polish Library of the Polish Social and Cultural Association in London. Source materials were provided with commentaries and an introduction showing the circumstances of the start of the correspondence. The presented letters first of all discuss current events in the literary-cultural life of Poland that Kazimierz Wierzyński, who lived in emigration after the Second World War, was very much interested in. The main issue that was addressed in Błoński's letters was the effect that the ruling party had on Poles' social and cultural life as well as a description of the way the police state worked in Polish People's Republic. The freedom with which Błoński writes, his scathing humor and a characteristic chatty tone make his letters to Wierzyński an exceptional voice documenting the social-political realities of the Polish People's Republic of the first half of the 1960s.

The monograph entitled "A New York Solitaire. The Polish Institute of Arts and Science of America. Jan Lechoń. Kazimierz Wierzyński. A Study of Selected Aspects of Its Activity in the Period 1939-1969" by Beata Dorosz is the outcome of a long-term study and laborious preliminary research which document the earliest years of the activity of the Polish Institute of Arts and Science of America and its two major personalities – Jan Lechoń and Kazimierz Wierzyński. Although the book is characterized by a documentary nature and is archive-oriented, full of dates, facts, lists and names, the author has managed to attract the readers’ attention by her lively narration, witty comments, titbits and anecdotes. Due to these, the readers are not only provided with reliable information on the activity of the Institute, but are also introduced to the atmosphere which accompanied the artistic and cultural life of the Polish community in America. Social reshuffling, personal animosities, diplomatic efforts, open quarrels and, finally, the ideas for the ‘dollar whip-rounds’, or generous donations for Polish artists-refugees, complement the colourful story about the people and organizations in emigration. At the same time, a specialist in literature will find here much quality information which illustrates the critical and scientific activity of Lechoń and Wierzyński. Liberally quoted reviews, discussions and lectures confirm their dynamic activity on the account of Polish culture. In fact, the compendium offered by Beata Dorosz delimits new directions of the research into the emigration milieu (and not only) of New York, and provides valuable contexts, in which the interpretation of Jan Lechoń’s and Kazimierz Wierzyński’s works reveal additional meanings.

The paper is devoted to the one and only drama of Kazimierz Wierzyński (1894–1969) ‘Comrade October’, written in 1950, and released only in 1992. Its aim is to explain why it was not published immediately after the writing. The author attempts to reconstruct the circumstances of the creation of the work and to effort to publish and exhibit it, as well as to present the state of research. He show the ‘Comrade October’ against the background of emigratory dramaturgy and theater life, which serves to reflect on the political character of the drama and to analyze the reception of his public readings in èmigrè circles (Theatre ‘Pro Arte’ by Olga Żeromska, 1954).

The article is devoted to the poem Rośliny [Plants] from the volume of poems Korzec maku [The Poppy Seed Flower] (1951) by Kazimierz Wierzyński (1894–1969). In this poem, the author tries to present a new way of using the motive of Orpheus and Eurydice. He analyzes the poem and takes into account its structure and biographical, historical and literary contexts. These analyses confirmed that among the works by Wierzyński, in which the author refers to Orpheus and Eurydice, the poem has its own place and, at the same time, it reflects an important stage in the development of post-war poetry of the author.
Artykuł został poświęcony interpretacji wiersza Kazimierza Wierzyńskiego (1894–1969) pt. Rośliny z tomu Korzec maku (1951). Autor starał się ukazać inny sposób wykorzystania przez poetę mitu orfickiego niż te dotychczas omówione przez badaczy. W tym celu przeprowadził dokładną analizę utworu, w której uwzględnił budowę wiersza oraz konteksty biograficzne, historyczne i literackie. Rozważania potwierdziły, że wśród utworów Wierzyńskiego zawierających motywy orfickie Rośliny zajmują miejsce osobne, a przy tym odzwierciedlają ważne stadium rozwoju powojennej twórczości poetyckiej tego autora.

Artykuł składa się z dwóch części. W pierwszej części autor odwołuje się do siedmiu wierszy (autorstwa Richarda Dehmela, Marii Stony, Johannesa Schlafa, Aleksandra Bloka, Tarasa Szewczenki i Carla Sandburga) przetłumaczonych przez Kazimierza Wierzyńskiego i stara się znaleźć dla nich miejsce we wszystkich tekstach poety. Druga część rozważań poświęcona jest najważniejszym przekładom tekstów przygotowanych przez Wierzyńskiego (wiersze, proza, dramat, biografia Życie i śmierć Chopina) w ujęciu chronologicznym.
The article consists of two parts. In the first part the author refers to seven poems (by Richard Dehmel, Maria Stona, Johannes Schlaf, Aleksander Blok, Taras Szewczenko and Carl Sandburg) translated by Kazimierz Wierzyński and he tries to find the place for them in all of the poet’s writings. The second part of this text is devoted to the most important translations of texts originally written by Wierzyński (poems, prose, drama, biography The Life and Dead of Chopin) inchronological perspective.

This is the fi rst study of Comrade October, the only drama in the oeuvre of Kazimierz Wierzyński (1894–1969). Written in 1950, it was not published until 1992. The article traces the origins of the play and assigns it to the tradition of dystopian fi ction (as exemplifi ed primarily by George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four. A close reading of the structure of the play (the characters, the plot and its temporal structure, etc.) reveals the originality of Wierzyński’s approach and the links between Comrade October and the poetry he wrote after the war in exile.

The author of the lecture is avidly interested in music worlds of Kazimierz Wierzynski, whose artistic resonance is the literary output of the poet, not only though… An interpretational attempt was made to analyse chosen texts by Wierzynski, making use of various criteria and their selection and interpretation. Texts of particular importance seem to be those which are concentrating both on musical aspects of literary texts, and references to music art, musicological conditions included in them. The author has carried out literary-musicological analyses of chosen poetic works of art by Kazimierz Wierzynski. She also focused on analysing linguistic means of expression in the semantic and phonetic layers and searching for artistic traces constituting the poetic originality of the author of Koncert zimowy (Winter concert). Music in the texts by Wierzynski proving his interest in the art of polyhymns, has become a particular manifestation of intellectual, aesthetic, intertextual worlds of his spirituality. Thanks to them it introduces a reader to the existential worlds of life with music and musicality expressed by means of poetry.

W tekście przedstawiono biografię nadawców i odbiorców, ustalono okoliczności nawiązania znajomości oraz jej charakter. Poddano analizie aspekty tematyczne i językowe tej korespondencji. Wymienione archiwa uzupełniają dotychczasowe badania nad powojenną emigracją, w szczególności zaś nad twórczością Janiny Kościałkowskiej.
The article discusses several still unpublished letters from Janina and Wacław Kościałkowski to Kazimierz Wierzyński, which have been found in the archives of the Polish Library in London. The article not only presents artistic and intellectual profiles of both the authors and the addressee, but also provides the analysis of the letters’ content and language. Thus, describes the archives as a supplemental yet important information on Janina Kościałkowska’s oeuvre.

The text contains the first editions of the texts of two literary programs broadcast by the New York section of the Polish branch of Radio Free Europe, provided with a foreword and a commentary. The texts survived in the Polish emigration archives in the form of a manuscript or a typescript with the author's handwritten alterations. Both texts broaden the knowledge of work for the radio that Polish writers in exile did. The author of the first text, written in 1950 after the death of George Bernard Shaw, is Jan Lechoń; the program is a recollection of his meeting with the British dramatist in London in 1930. In the foreword the changes in Lechoń's attitude to Shaw's works are shown – from his early fascination to the period of skepticism that he experienced during his stay in emigration. The other one, written by Kazimierz Wierzyński, is a review of Andrzej Bobkowski's Szkice piórkiem (Sketches in pen and ink) published by the Instytut Literacki in Paris in 1957. It was the first of all reviews and discussions of the book that appeared in the émigré press; the two writers' similar vicissitudes at the beginning of the Second World War and a critical attitude towards the French society of that time that they shared is especially interesting in the review.

This paper presents the problems faced by an editor preparing a correspondence dialogue between Jan Lechoń and Kazimierz Wierzyński (237 letters,mainly handwritten, from the years 1941-1956) for a critical edition, such as: its completeness, dating, or the challenge of deciphering the manuscripts. The paper signals some of the appearing motifs and problems in the letters, making an initial attempt to interpret them in the context of both authors’ biographies, as well as historical events (especially the experience of emigration). Moreover, it contains seventeen short poetic pieces written by both poets (poems, epigrams and trifles) which may be found on the pages of those letters. They have been transcribed from the manuscripts and then edited, therefore appearing in print for the very first time in the Polish version of this article in 2011.

This paper presents and discusses two main theses. Firstly, the author claims that, contrary to what is commonly thought, neither the subject matter nor the meaning of Kazimierz Wierzyński’s later poems diff er significantly from the topics taken up in his debut volumes. The poet never lost his youthful faith in the order of the world, nor did he quench his admiration for the work of creation. It is the main and essential feature of his poetry. Secondly, an important element of Wierzyński’s poems, which reveals itself in various forms and shapes, is prayer. This form of expression is referenced directly in many titles and often functions as the central theme of the poems. Moreover, many of Wierzyński’s works represent exactly this speech genre. His volumes contain poetic prayers differing thematically and functionally, for all seasons and all times of a day, for various holidays, celebrations, and other occasions. The poetry by Kazimierz Wierzyński is in fact one big prayer of supplication, humility, delight, and thanksgivings.

This article analyses the short story collection Granice świata (“The Limits of the World”) by Kazimierz Wierzyński. It emphasises two war narratives, namely The Patrol and Sentence of Death, in which the firstperson narrator (the author himself) experiences extreme events. Wierzyński’s characters commit terrible atrocities, and the writer describes their ruthless and unexpected reactions to highly distressing episodes.
