The region between the Wieliczka Foothills and the Beskid Makowski Mts. has yielded new data on the accumulation of loess-like deposits during the Vistulian Glaciation. The grain-size distibution and the heavy mineral composition, particularly the significant presence of amphiboles, indicates on aeolian origin for these silty deposits. The silt was most probably derived from glaciofluvial deposits in the Carpathian forelands. Among the Quaternary deposits which accumulated during the Vistulian Glaciation and Holocene, three horizons of loess-like deposits (correlated with the lower, middle and upper younger loesses of the Lublin Upland), three horizons of solifluction deposits, and three horizons of deluvial deposits were distinguished. The accumulation of seven alluvial successions in the Raba and Harbutówka River valleys encompasses a large part of the Quaternary - from the South Polish Glaciations (terraces VII and VI) up to the Holocene (terraces II and I). The lithostratigraphy of the slope deposits (solifluctional and deluvial) and loess-like deposits has been estabilished mainly on the basis of 14C dates of the palaeosol horizons. One of these dates, combined with palynological analysis, confirmed the existence of a warmer period in the Denekamp Interstadial (31 200 +/- 1000 years BP in the Harbutowice-1 section). The dates obtained fromthe Jastrzębia-1 (20 760 +/- 300 years BP) and Polanka-1 (20 980 +/- 310 years BP and 14 510 +/- 150 years BP) sections point to periods favouring the development of soils in the younger and terminal parts of the Younger Pleniglacial. These results, consistent with the dates obtained by other investigators, point to the existence of a warmer period (between 24-20 ka BP) in southern Poland during the maximum development of the ice sheet (Main Stadial) during the last glaciation in northern Poland.

The Czarny Dunajec is a typical river originating in high mountains (the Western Tatras). Over the entire Quaternary era the river laboured carrying material away from the Tatras and depositing it in the form of a typical braided channel at their foot. At the end of the 19'h century, river management projects and quarrying operations located directly in the very channel set off a rejuvenation process that was further accelerated at the end of 1960s. The activities resulted in the damaged several sections in their natural form and considerably deepened the channel. Measures taken to restrict the amount of material entering the Czorsztyn Dam have largely failed. From the geomorphologic and environmental points of view a continued transformation of the Czarny Dunajec river channel should be regarded as highly adverse.

The coarse-grained Brno sands are an important groundwater aquifer and represent a volumetrically significant component of the Lower Badenian/Middle Miocene sedimentary infill of the Western Carpathian Foredeep, a foreland basin formed on the eastern margin of the Bohemian Massif in front of the Western Carpathians. The integration of core and outcrop facies analysis, summary of facies features, depositional processes and architectures, and integration of provenance analysis have led to a new depositional model for the Brno sands as the product of Gilbert-type delta systems prograding into an incised palaeovalley developed on the outer foreland basin margin. The position, shape and morphology of the palaeovalley were influenced by pre-Neogene basement faults trending NW–SE. The Gilbert-type deltas recognized can be classified as foreset-dominated with other elements subordinate. The foreset beds mainly reflect low-density turbidites, with varied but important evidence of deposits of high-density turbidity currents, cohesionless debris flows and debris falls. The thick foreset deposits show, in detail, repetitive successive prograding-retrograding episodes. These are interpreted as rapid high-frequency pulses of relative sea level change i.e. as high-frequency depositional sequences. The deltaic deposition of the Brno sands was terminated by deposits of a shoal-water delta and the sands were finally drowned by a thick pile of offshore pelagic clays. The provenance of Brno sands is located into the nearby geological units. Redeposition from the older basin infill also played an important role.

During the period of 1995-2005 in the mountain areas of southern Poland (Western Carpathians), in the catchment areas of the Upper Dunajec River basin in particular, significant structural changes took place. The share of arable lands decreased in the range of 17.7-27.6% of the total area. Simultaneously the area of permanent grasslands (meadows and pastures) has increased from 9.8 to 21.1%. The objective of the work was an assessment of biogenic ingredients content (N-NH4, N-NO3, and PO4) in surface water on area of the Białka catchment with the domination of permanent grasslands with low production intensification based on natural fertilizers and scattering input of mineral fertilizers. In years 2002-2005 the average share of arable land amounted 16.2%, pastures and meadows 83.7% and 0,1% of orchards. Studies showed that surface water quality in this catchment area was very good, in the range of the 1st class. Mountain grasslands are fulfilling an important protective role contributing for sustain high quality of surface water.
W latach 1995-2005 doszło na obszarach górzystych Polski Południowej (Karpaty Zachodnie), zwłaszcza w zlewni górnego Dunajca, do istotnych zmian strukturalnych. Udział gruntów ornych zmniejszył się od 17,7 do 27,6% w powierzchni ogólnej. Równocześnie zwiększył się obszar trwałych użytków zielonych (łąk i pastwisk) - od 9,8 do 21,1%. Nastąpiła także ekstensyfikacja produkcji pasz na użytkach zielonych oraz zmniejszenie pogłowia bydła i owiec. Celem badań była ocena zawartości składników o charakterze biogennym (N-NO3, N-NH4 i PO4) w wodach powierzchniowych na terenie zlewni "Białka" w warunkach dominacji trwałych użytków zielonych o niskiej intensyfikacji produkcji, opartej na nawozach naturalnych, z niewielkim udziałem nawozów mineralnych. W latach 2002-2005 udział gruntów ornych wynosił tu średnio 16,2, pastwisk i łąk 83,7, a sadów tylko 0,1%. Badania wykazały, że jakość wód powierzchniowych tej zlewni była bardzo dobra i mieściła się najczęściej w I klasie. Górskie użytki zielone pełnią ważną rolę ochronną, przyczyniając się do utrzymania wysokiej jakości wód powierzchniowych.

W artykule zbadano wieloletni i roczny przebieg najwyższych miesięcznych sum opadów atmosferycznych w Polskich Karpatach Zachodnich na podstawie danych z 6 stacji: Nowy Sącz, Sanok, Bielsko-Biała, Maków Podhalański, Krynica i Zakopane z okresu 1951–2005 oraz wyznaczono ich wartości prawdopodobne. Wykazano, że najwyższe miesięczne sumy opadów mogą występować w ciągu całego roku, z największą częstością w miesiącach letnich. Nie stwierdzono istotnych statystycznie trendów zmian wieloletnich, a jedynie krótkookresowe fluktuacje.
The authors have investigated long-term and annual patterns in maximum monthly precipitation totals in the Western Carpathian Mts. in Poland. Data from six stations (Nowy Sącz, Sanok, Bielsko-Biała, Maków Podhalański, Krynica and Zakopane) spanning the period 1951–2005 were used both in their raw form and as derived probabilities. The study showed that the highest monthly precipitation totals were likely to occur throughout the year, but most frequent were in the summer months. No long-term statistically significant trends were identified, just shorter-term fluctuations. All of the stations recorded high precipitation totals in last years of the 20th c. and in 2001 too, while lower totals were recorded in the mid-1990s. During the first five years of the 21st c., the trend to a decrease was found at most of the stations. At some of them peak monthly totals exceeded the monthly average figures by more than 350%. For precipitation totals with a 1% probability of exceedance, the highest totals were obtained from Gumbel distribution and the lowest from the normal distribution at all of the stations. In high probability ranges (e.g. p = 20%) the highest precipitation was derived from Weibull distribution. The highest maximum monthly totals recorded during the period 1995–2005 corresponded approximately to a 1% probability of exceedance. The only exception was the station at Maków Podhalański, where the highest monthly precipitation of 521.1 mm was at 88.1 mm higher than the figure derived from the theoretical distribution with p = 1%.

A hitherto unknown magnetic anomaly has been detected in the framework of assembling magnetic picture of the Slovakian territory. The impressive magnetic object was recognized in the northeasternmost part of Slovakia within the area which is created by sediments of the Flysch belt. This is certain rarity because the Flysch sequence is practically without magnetic rocks. Due to this was obvious that anomaly is caused by an exotic rocks complex, intruded into Flysch sediments. The shape and the character of anomalous body indicated that source of anomaly is located in the shallow depth under surface relatively. The anomaly has been modelled in the 2D. Source of magnetic anomaly was interpreted as the product of Neogene volcanism – neck of intermediate rocks. Besides of this there were found out other minor anomalies within this area which might be caused also by smaller subvolcanic bodies. The Carpathian Conductivity Anomaly is located in the proximity of new observed magnetic anomalies. Due to this fact it is possible to open new view on the importance of this zone. In the case of justification of such interpretation the area might be interesting for its potential prognosis of hydrocarbons occurrence, metallogenetic prominence, as well as possibilities for underground storage of carbon dioxide.

Quantity, genetic type and maturity of organic matter dispersed in the Lower Palaeozoic sequence from the Lower Cambrian to Silurian strata of the Polish and Ukrainian parts of the Carpathian Foredeep basement in the Tarnogród–Stryi area were evaluated based on the results of geochemical analyses of 475 rock samples collected from 45 wells. The best source rocks were found in the Silurian strata where the present total organic carbon (TOC) content is up to 2.6 wt%. They occur in the vicinity of Wola Obszańska, where the median of the present and the initial total organic carbon (TOC) contents in the individual wells amount to 0.98 and 1.6 wt%, respectively. The Cambrian and Ordovician strata have a poorer hydrocarbon potential and their present TOC content never exceeds 1 wt%. In all of the investigated Lower Palaeozoic strata, organic matter is represented by the oil-prone Type-II kerogen deposited in anoxic or sub-oxic conditions. The maturity of source rocks ranges from early mature (the initial phase of the low-temperature thermogenic processes) in selected zones of the Silurian strata in the vicinity of Wola Obszańska, through the middle and the final phase of “oil window” in the Ordovician and Cambrian strata in the Polish part of the study area, to the overmature stage in the Ordovician strata in the south-eastern part of the study area (Ukraine).

In south-eastern Poland and western Ukraine, the Outer Carpathian orogen and the Carpathian Foredeep developed in the foreland of the East-European Platform (Baltica). The area consists of a number of tectonic units included in the Trans-European Suture Zone (TESZ): the Łysogóry–Radom and Małopolska blocks in the territory of Poland, and the Rava Rus’ka Zone, Kokhanivka Zone and Leżajsk Massif in the Ukraine. The development of the TESZ began in the (?Middle) Late Neoproterozoic and was associated with rifting processes taking place along the western edge of the East-European Craton (Baltica) during the break-up of the Rodinia/ Pannotia supercontinent. The passive margin of Baltica evolved into the TESZ during collisional and/or strike-slip movements. In the TESZ (Małopolska Block and Leżajsk Massif), Ediacaran flysch-type siliciclastics were affected by weak metamorphism and folding during the Cadomian orogeny. The development of Cambrian deposits in the East-European Craton, Łysogóry–Radom Block, northeastern part of the Małopolska Block (Kielce Fold Belt) and in the Rava Rus’ka and Kokhanivka zones was associated with the post-rift thermal subsidence. Tectonic movements (so-called Sandomierz phase), which occurred probably due to an oblique collision of the Małopolska Block (included into the passive margin of Baltica) and the East-European Craton during late Middle Cambrian to Late Cambrian (possibly also Early Ordovician) times, resulted in the following: (1) development of stratigraphical (?erosional) gaps in the Middle and Upper Cambrian sections of the Lublin–Podlasie slope of the East-European Craton and the Kielce Fold Belt in the Małopolska Block; (2) intense tectonic subsidence of the Łysogóry–Radom Block during the deposition of Middle and Upper Cambrian sediments; (3) development of compressional folds in the Lower Cambrian to lower Middle Cambrian deposits of the Kielce Fold Belt on the Małopolska Block. Ordovician–Silurian series were deposited in a typical flexural foredeep basin, in which subsidence and deposition rates accelerated during Late Silurian (Ludlow–Pridoli) and Early Devonian (Lochkovian) times. It is postulated that the present position of the Małopolska Block relative to the Łysogóry–Radom Block and East-European Craton resulted from post-Silurian dextral movements between the Małopolska Block and the East-European Craton. Devonian–Carboniferous deposits occur only in the Małopolska Block located in the Variscan foreland. The Middle-Late Devonian and Early Carboniferous shallow-marine carbonate platforms developed under an extensional regime. The siliciclastic Upper Visean–Lower Namurian A Culm series were deposited in the flexural Variscan foreland basin. During the Late Namurian A, the Małopolska Block was uplifted in response to the build-up of compressional foreland stresses. During post-Carboniferous times, the Precambrian and Palaeozoic deposits were subject to erosion and restructuring during the Alpine orogeny.

The Upper Jurassic–Lower Cretaceous carbonate sediments developed in a narrow, Ukrainian part of the basement of the Carpathian Foredeep show high facies diversity. Based upon thin section studies, the authors identified eleven principal microfacies varieties. Three main stages of development of carbonate platform were distinguished: (i) Oxfordian–Early Kimmeridgian, (ii) Kimmeridgian–Tithonian, and (iii) Berriasian–Valanginian. The Oxfordian sediments are rather thin and represent both the outer and inner, distally steepened ramp facies. In the Late Kimmeridgian and, mainly, in the Tithonian, the intensive growth of rimmed platform took place with distinct zones of peritidal, margin barrier and platform slope, bearing calciturbidite facies. Development of the rimmed platform was controlled by synsedimentary tectonic movements along faults rejuvenated southwest of the Holy Cross Mts. Fault Zone. In the Berriasian–Valanginian, the dominant process was sedimentation onto not-rimmed platform controlled by small sea-level changes. Both the facies development and literature data indicate that the Late Jurassic sedimentation in the Ukrainian part of the Carpathian Foredeep basement shows considerable differences in comparison to that of the Polish part. In the studied successions, large Oxfordian microbial-siliceous sponge reef complexes, known from the Polish part of the Carpathian Foredeep basement and other areas in Europe, were rare. In the study area carbonate buildups were encountered mainly in the intervals representing the Upper Kimmeridgian–Tithonian where small, microbial-sponge and microbial-coral biostromes or patch-reefs were formed. Their growth was presumably restricted to a narrow zone of the upper slope, close to ooidal-bioclastic margin platform facies. In the Polish part of the Carpathian Foredeep basement, the Late Jurassic sedimentation took place on a vast, homoclinal ramp while in the Ukrainian part it proceeded on a narrow, distally steepened ramp and rimmed platform with distinct marginal platform barrier. Similar platform facies distribution in both regions appeared mainly in the Early Cretaceous, although with some stratigraphical differences. The facies distribution of the Upper Jurassic sediments was closely controlled by the block structure of the basement and by orientation of the main, transcontinental Holy Cross Mts. Fault Zone, which supports the opinion on its activity in the Mesozoic era. The Ukrainian part of the Carpathian Foredeep basement located over the Palaeozoic Kokhanivka Block, between the Krakovets and Holy Cross fault zones, includes predominantly the slope, marginal and inner platform facies. Facies observed over the Palaeozoic Rava Ruska Block (south-western part of the East-European Platform), between the Holy Cross and Rava Ruska fault zones, represents mainly the inner platform and the peri-shore deposits.

W artykule przedstawiono, w ujęciu chronologicznym, omówienie poglądów dotyczących rozwoju litostratygraficznego utworów miocenu na obszarze polskich Karpat Zachodnich. Przedstawiono również wyniki badań utworów miocenu stwierdzonych na tym obszarze w szeregu nowych wierceń. W nawiązaniu do dotychczasowych badań i nowych obserwacji przedstawiono jednolitą korelację utworów miocenu, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem osadów dolnomioceńskich. Określono występowanie i rozprzestrzenienie wyróżnionych jednostek litostratygraficznych oraz przedstawiono ewolucję basenu mioceńskiego i jego tektogenezę. Osady mioceńskie na obszarze polskich Karpat Zachodnich tworzą zespół utworów o sumarycznej miąższości dochodzącej do około 3000 metrów. Prawie połowę tej miąższości zajmują osady dolnego miocenu. W miarę nasuwania się ku północy górotworu karpackiego, następowało przesuwanie się mioceńskiego zbiornika i wkraczanie kolejno coraz to młodszych osadów. W utworach dolnego miocenu wyróżniono formacje z Zawoi, z Suchej, ze Stryszawy, a w dolnym badenie - formacje z Jachówki, dębowiecką i skawińską
The paper presents chronologically arranged discussion of existing views on the lithostratigraphic development of the Western Carpathian Miocene deposits as well as data from old and new boreholes in the studied area. The present author suggests the uniform stratigraphic division of the Miocene (especially Lower Miocene) deposits based on existing results and new findings. He also presents the occurrence and extent of distinguished lithostratigraphic units as well as the evolution of the Miocene basin and its tectogenesis. Miocene deposits in the Polish part of the Western Carpathians consist of thick deposit up to about 3000 meters. Almost half of these are represented by Lower Miocene deposits. The Miocene basin was moved northwards and younger deposits originated during folding processes of the Carpathian orogen. Opis:
Molecular composition of natural gases accumulated in autochthonous Miocene strata of the Polish and Ukrainian Carpathian Foredeep is dominated by methane, which usually constitutes over 98 vol%. Methane was generated by the carbon dioxide reduction pathway of microbial processes. Ethane was generated both during microbial and thermogenic processes ("oil window") and propane at the initial stage of the low-temperature thermogenic processes, and also by the microbial processes. The rhythmic and cyclic deposition of Miocene clays and sands as well as the vigorous generation of microbial methane caused that the gas produced in claystone beds was accumulated in the overlaying sandstones, and capped, in turn, by the succeeding claystones. Such generation and accumulation system of microbial gases gave rise to the formation of multi-horizontal gas fields. Analysis of the distribution of immature humic dispersed organic matter in the Upper Badenian and Lower Sarmatian sequences indicates that it is practically homogeneous. A migration range of microbial gases was insignificant and locations of their accumulations would depend only on the existence of proper type of traps (compactional anticlines situated above basement uplifts, sealed by the Carpathian Overthrust and/or by faults; stratigraphic pinching out and stratigraphic traps related to unconformities). Another situation is encountered in the south, beneath the Carpathian Overthrust. The thickness of the autochthonous Miocene strata in this area is more than 1,500 metres. Geochemical studies reveal that from a depth of 2,500 metres starts the process of low-temperature thermogenic hydrocarbon generation (“oil window”). At greater depths, more than 7,500 metres, within the autochthonous Lower Miocene basin only the high-temperature methane ("gas window") could be produced and accumulated.

Opis:
The Carpathian Orava Basin is a tectonic structure filled with Neogene and Quaternary deposits superimposed on the collision zone between the ALCAPA and European plates. Tectonic features of the south-eastern margin of the Orava Basin and the adjoining part of the fore-arc Central Carpathian Palaeogene Basin were studied. Field observations of mesoscopic structures, analyses of digital elevation models and geological maps, supplemented with electrical resistivity tomography surveys were performed. Particular attention was paid to joint network analysis. The NE-SW-trending Krowiarki and Hruštinka-Biela Orava sinistral fault zones were recognized as key tectonic features that influenced the Orava Basin development. They constitute the north-eastern part of a larger Mur-Mürz-Žilina fault system that separates the Western Carpathians from the Eastern Alps. The interaction of these sinistral fault zones with the older tectonic structures of the collision zone caused the initiation and further development of the Orava Basin as a strike-slip-related basin. The Krowiarki Fault Zone subdivides areas with a different deformation pattern within the sediments of the Central Carpathian Palaeogene Basin and was active at least from the time of cessation of its sedimentation in the early Miocene. Comparison of structural data with the recent tectonic stress field, earthquake focal mechanisms and GPS measurements allows us to conclude that the Krowiarki Fault Zone shows a stable general pattern of tectonic activity for more than the last 20 myr and is presently still active.
