Opis:
The present day world once again raises the question of national identity, especially in places where migration or more nationalistic policies have caused visible social implications. In Wales, for long, this issue appeared to have been marked by a strong reference to the Welsh language and the importance of having an ethnic Welsh identity. However, since the decline of Cymraeg (the Welsh indigenous language) and new social developments in the last two centuries, the notion of Welsh identity has required a reconceptualization to face up to new realities. The following article attempts to indicate to what extent the Welsh language was and still is part of the essence of Welshness and what other factors aff ect the understanding of Welsh nationhood presently.

Compared with Anglophone literatures, Welsh-language fiction has to date received little attention in the context of the rapidly developing intermedial and interart studies. The purpose of the article is to provide a preliminary mapping of pictorial insets in Welsh-language fiction in the period 1992-2016. The novels considered in the article include some of the milestones in the development of Welsh fiction and provide a representative sample of the literary production from the period in question. The article identifies and lists the sources of ekphrastic insets scattered throughout the texts, grouping them into descriptive ekphrases, references, pictorial models and spatio-contextual ekphrases.

Welsh, word-stress, Loan phonology, adaptation
Opis:
Wales has been in contact with English since as early as the 12th century, with the English language exerting regular influence on the indigenous Welsh-language community since the 14th century. Since the earlier times of contact the two languages have interacted, mutually influencing each other to a differing and asymmetrical degree. The situation is that of widespread bilingualism, with everyday occurrences of natural code-switching between Welsh and English, as well as constant interaction and mutual influence of one language on the other, most notably in the form of borrowing and substratum patterns, not restricted to the area of the lexical stock. Within the lexical sphere, however, there is evidence that borrowing from English must have begun as early as the Old English period; and that the process is in full force today. The older borrowings are not straightforwardly so noticeable or recognisable since they have undergone substantial phonological modification and adaptation to the native system. One of these modifications has concerned the suprasegmental feature of word stress. The adaptation of Anglicisms at the segmental level has been investigated before, while the accent accommodation to the Welsh pattern has only occasionally been noticed or commented upon. And yet, since there exists a systemic difference between the two phonological systems in that in English the word-accent is quantity sensitive, whereas in Welsh it is fixed (mostly) to the penultimate syllable, one can expect a considerable amount of conflicting points and necessary adjustments to eliminate illicit metrical structure. The research into these issues appears to suggest that we cannot talk about mechanical inclusion of borrowed words into the word-stress pattern functioning in Modern Welsh, as will hopefully become clear after examination of the data set. It is to such issues that this paper is going to be devoted.

Opis:
In 2003, Martin Rees referred to the present as “mankind’s final century.” A few years later, Slavoj Žižek wrote that humankind is heading towards “apocalyptic zero-point,” when the ecological crisis will most probably lead to our complete destruction. In his 2017 collection, Diary of the Last Man, Welsh poet Robert Minhinnick offers readers a meditation upon Earth at a liminal moment-on the brink of becoming completely unpopulated. Imagining a solitary human being, living in the midst of environmental collapse, Minhinnick yet entwines different voices-human and non-human-operating across vast spans of time. The speaker of the poems moves freely through different geographies and cultural contexts, but the voice that starts and ends the journey, seems to be the voice of the poet himself: he is the last man on earth, a survivor of ecological disaster. The paper discusses Minhinnick’s collection as a projection of the world we now inhabit into a future where it will exist only in the form of nostalgic memories. The analysis focuses on the role of objects in the construction of the world-within-the poem, where the fragments of human civilization are being claimed by forces of the environment-engulfing sand, progressive erosion-forming a retrospective vision of our “now” which will inevitably become our “past.”

Braciaca, on an altar to Mars at Haddon Hall (near Bakewell, in the north Midlands of England), has been related to Welsh brag 'malt' and explained as 'he of (divine) intoxication'. Yet this is hard to see, and a new explanation from Welsh bragad 'army, host; battle' seems preferable. It ts the God of War better than 'malt' does (a product more apt for Bacchus than Mars). If so, Braciaca 'of the hosts' will be one of many terms from Roman Britain that Welsh (and related languages) can explain. To show this, we rst consider Celtic attitudes to Mars, and then go on to brag and its cognates.

Opis:
Runic and ogham inscriptions are contained within a form, place and shape which may pinpoint to a specific message that remains hidden on the level of the text itself. This extra-linguistic and extra-textual dimension of inscriptions was an iconic element of the process of shaping of early oral cultures in their transition to literacy. As Judith Jesch (1998) argues, due to the sole materiality of inscribed stones, which allows to contain words, as well as the fact that inscriptions create a space for convergence of oral and literate cultures, it is possible to pinpoint differences between these two types of cultures. The following article1 seeks to address the issue of transition from orality to literacy on the basis of early ogham and Latin traditions of inscribed stones. The main area of focus here lies in early Welsh inscribed stones, which represent a similar set of characteristics to runic inscribed stones. The extra-linguistic paradigm of these inscriptions allows distinguishing not only the meaning and addressees of the inscription, but also enables recovering information on the circumstances in which inscriptions were probably created.

Opis:
The article provides a brief outline of cultural and linguistic aspects of the Welsh settlement in Patagonia, Argentina. Established in 1865, for several decades the Colony (Y Wladfa) remained an economically thriving, Welsh-speaking community, which other Welsh emigration projects had failed to achieve. At the turn of the 20th century the growing pressure from the Argentinian government to integrate the Colony into the state’s administrative system and to introduce education in Spanish resulted in a rapid hispanisation of the Welsh population. Nevertheless, Y Wladfa has managed to preserve its distinct national and cultural identity. The Welsh language is spoken by several thousand people and many Welsh traditions such as the festivals of literature, music and performance (‘eisteddfodau’) are still held annually in Trelew, Gaiman and Trefelin. The current revival of Welsh language and culture in Chubut Province is supported by organisations and institutions in Wales and stimulated by the lively contacts between the Colony and the mother country and official funding from Wales.

Opis:
Welsh onions are characterized by a relatively high storage potential, high nutritional value and mild flavor, which contribute to their growing popularity among consumers. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of Polimag S fertilizer applied at two doses on the macronutrient content of edible parts of three Welsh onion cultivars. A two-factorial field experiment was performed in a randomized block design with three replications. It was set up in the Experimental Garden of the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn, and conduccted in 2010-2011. The experimental factors were: (1) Welsh onion cultivars Long White Ishikura, Parade and Performer, grown from seedlings for bunch harvest, and (2) the application of mixed fertilizer, Polimag S, at two doses of 0.072 kg m-2 and 0.144 kg m-2. The seedlings were grown in a greenhouse, where each year seeds were sown in boxes (50 cm x 30 cm), between 14 and 20 March, to grow seedlings. At the two- or three-leaf stage, they were planted out in a field between 17 and 26 April. Forty-two seedlings were planted on a plot, at the 20 cm x 30 cm spacing. Polimag S, applied as a supplemental fertilizer at two different doses, was mixed with soil immediately before the transplanting of seedlings. A single harvest was carried out manually. Marketable yield consisted of healthy Welsh onion plants, with thickened leaf-bases of more than 1 cm in diameter, free from diseases, pests and mechanical damage. The chemical composition of Welsh onion plants was evaluated immediately after harvest. The concentrations of macronutrients (total N, P, K, Mg, Ca, S) were determined in edible parts of Welsh onion plants. Statistical analysis revealed no significant effect of a cultivar on the macronutrient content of whole Welsh onion plants, scapes and leaves. Leaves were characterized by the highest macronutrient concentrations. Polimag S at a 50% dose contributed to a significant increase in the total nitrogen and phosphorus content of whole plants. Wide Ca:Mg, Ca:P, K:Mg and K:(Mg+Ca) ratios were noted in whole Welsh onion plants.
50x30 cm.

Opis:
The Welsh identity is undisputable in national (i.e. ethnic), social, cultural and even economic dimensions however it is doubtful in political sphere because vast majority of the Welsh still cannot decide if they are more Welsh or British. The ’double identity’ dilemma was visible especially during devolution referendums voting in 1979, 1997 and 2011 when non–political motives were often much more determinative then the factor of belonging to the Welsh community in political meaning. Thus, answering to the question about devolution referendum role in shaping political dimension of Welshness requires thoroughly analyse of the mentioned referendums results as an evident figures of public support for establishing legal and institutional guarantees of maintaining and developing all aspects of national identity. In the article has been contained description how the Welsh relations to the idea of self–determination (in frames of the wide internal autonomy) have changed by last 35 years. An author shows also barriers and factors fostering this process.
