Max Weber wprowadził w obszarze nauki i w praktyce wiele innowacyjnych rozwiązań. Wydaje się, że nie sposób jest wskazać źródła innowacji w XX stuleciu bez odwołania się do jego działalności. W niniejszym artykule analiza tych innowacji przeprowadzona jest w kontekście przedsiębiorczości, techniki i kultury. Przedstawione zostały podstawy działań nowatorskich, które Max Weber dostrzegał w wartościach i moralności, a także spojrzenie na innowacje przez pryzmat ich użyteczności dla systemu, a nie jednostki. Wskazane zostały również innowacje, które wprowadził Max Weber zarówno na poziomie idei, jak i działań operacyjnych. Autorzy kierują weberowski model w stronę współczesnego teatru zaawansowanych technologii i przedstawiają wynikające z tego konsekwencje.
In the chapter, we present Max Weber as the creator of innovation in several areas of science, as well as a researcher of innovative activities and inventors. In the chapter we conduct an analysis of created innovations in terms of entrepreneurship, technology and culture. We point to the foundations of innovative activities that Max Weber saw in values and morals, as well as a view of innovation through the prism of utility and benefit for the system, not the individual. We point to the innovations introduced by Max Weber both at the level of ideas and operational activities. We direct the Weberian model to the modern theater of advanced technologies and present the resulting consequences.

Administration is one of the crucial systems for functioning of a state – organisation which is supposed to provide security at collective level for its citizens. Values under which administration operates, are important for security culture of the whole society (II stream of security culture). Concept of Max Weber’s ideal type of administration – bureaucracy – was at time of its creation an innovative way of thinking about the state, but as the time passed, several pathologic phenomena had occurred. Authors present here a sketch of Weber’s concept and its influence on temporary erosion of values.

My purpose in what follows is to use ‘postsecularity’ as a transhistorical concept that underpins a new reading of modern religious history. My understanding of postsecularity is inspired by Jürgen Habermas. The postsecular is thought based on the dialectical conjunction of a farewell to traditional religious orthodoxy and a plea for a heterodox revival of religious intuitions and symbols. My main contention would be that postsecularism thus understood is hardly a new phenomenon and that it is in fact a persistent undercurrent within Western modernity, bringing together such authors as William Blake, Franz Rosenzweig, and Max Weber.

The main aim of the article is to present the spatial differentiation of crime in Poland. Were taken into account main types of offenses: criminal, economic and road. Statistical analysis and application of Weber’s median allowed to characterize crime in Poland and to rank the sub-regions due of the risk level of crime. In the study were used spatial and time data included, among others, in the Regional Data Bank in the years 2000-2014 and in Police research papers available on Internet. On the basis of the research it can be said that for several years in Poland has been clearly visible downward trend in the number of detected crimes and, at the same time, increase their detection. Studies have confirmed existing differences between intensity of crime in eastern and western Poland and distinguishing position of big cities (with the exception of Wroclaw).

The article analyses Max Weber’s position regarding the so-called Polish question from the point of view of post-colonial theory. The author discusses the circumstances of Weber’s scientific interest in the Polish question and offers an interpretation of his statements in this regard. Then, she moves on to explore the relationship between this early inspiration and the subsequent development of Weber’s comparative historical sociology, whereupon follows an outline of its post-colonial criticism. The article concludes with a suggestion of applying the author’s approach to studying the post-communist transformation and transitological debates in Poland.

This paper provides insights into the problems of Alfred Schütz’s expositions of the subjective ground of the life-world. It is an attempt to explore the inspirations underlying the general thesis of the natural stance, as well as to comprehend how the everyday-life experience is understood within the paradigm of phenomenological sociology.

Some remarks on the theoretical and methodological aspects of the notion of fieldThe text constitutes an analysis of the notion of field – its limits and its importance in the theory of Pierre Bourdieu and in other sociological approaches which draw on his theory. The author opens his considerations with a return to the genesis of the notion in Pierre Bourdieu’s works, that is to the formative period of the theory, culminating in the 1970s. The author then goes on to ponder the practical application and empirical scope of the notion of field, and concludes the article with the presentation of a methodological use of the notion of field in data analysis. Uwagi na temat teoretycznych i metodologicznych aspektów pojęcia polaTekst stanowi analizę pojęcia pola – jego granic i jego wagi zarówno w teorii Pierre’a Bourdieu, jak i w innych, ale odwołujących się do tej teorii, ujęciach socjologicznych. Swoje rozważania autor rozpoczyna od powrotu do genezy tego pojęcia w dziełach Bourdieu, czyli do okresu powstawania teorii, którego kulminacja przypada na lata siedemdziesiąte XX wieku. Następnie autor zajmuje się praktycznym zastosowaniem i empirycznym zakresem pojęcia pola. Na końcu przedstawia metodologiczne wykorzystanie pojęcia pola w ramach analizy danych.

This text discusses the main themes of the postcolonial critique of Max Weber’s sociological theory. Beginning with a sociological interpretation of the concept of a classic figure, the author lists the reasons why Weber should be recognized as the theorist most responsible for sociology being considered in separably connected with Western imperialism and colonialism. The author first reconstructs the premises Weber used to support sociology’s claim to be a science of universal validity, then interprets his concept of the ideal type and discusses criticism of the concept, as exemplified by the works of the British sociologist Gurminder Bhambra. In analyzing postcolonial critiques of the ideal type as a methodological tool, two issues are emphasized: the normative hypostasing of the ideal type, and the disruption to Weber’s procedure of creating and critiquing the ideal type that has occurred as a result of representatives of non-Western cultures joining the dialogue and revealing the limitations of the type’s communicativeness and thus of its universal validity.

Odpierając zarzuty polemistów, autor artykułu zwraca uwagę na dużą rolę jasności i precyzji pojęć w prowadzeniu polemik naukowych oraz wyjaśnia bronione przez siebie wcześniej stanowisko umiarkowanego konstruktywizmu w socjologii. W konkluzji przypisuje swym krytykom nie w pełni wyartykułowany irracjonalizm, który wynika, jego zdaniem, zarówno z fascynacji myślą społeczną Brunona Latoura, jak i z powierzchownej interpretacji Maksa Webera.
Rebutting the responses of his polemists, the author emphasizes the pivotal role of the concepts’ clarity and precision in scholarly debates. He further explains the standpoint of moderate constructivism in sociology that he has earlier defended. In conclusions, he ascribes tacit irrationalism to his critics, which according to him results from the fascination with Bruno Latour’s social theory as well as the superficial reading of Max Weber.

Examples of scandals related to exposing the unethical practices of companies which are classified as CSR leaders include cases where their declarations on undertaking social responsibility, as well as spending a lot of money on spectacular social campaigns and then rigorously reporting it in the appropriate documents, are accompanied by acts of abusing workers’ and environmental rights, misleading customers, i.e., abusing consumer rights, and finally “tax optimisation”, which generates measurable losses to the local communities. These cases raise the question about the reason for corporate social responsibility not being immune to abuse or opportunities to treat it as merely an image-related issue. The problem is presented using Max Weber’s widely known typology. It contrasts the ethics of conviction (ruled by the principle of intentionally keeping to the rules which have been adopted as being right) with the ethics of responsibility for the consequences of actions, including those that were undertaken in good faith but which have unintentional consequences. The usefulness of Weber’s typology when considering CSR problems becomes evident when we notice that the dominant interpretation of the corporate social responsibility concept, with its characteristic emphasis on voluntariness and positivity of actions within CSR, brings this concept closer to the ethics of conviction model. Voluntary actions in the field of CSR should go beyond carrying out regular goals of economic activities, i.e., the maximisation of profits, by providing good quality, desirable goods and services. However, what should be considered a prosocial activity –and thus, social responsibility –remains unclear in some companies. In accordance with the thesis of the paper, this ambiguity is one of the important factors that create discrepancies between declarations and real corporate activities. As we can see, the focus on voluntarily doing good which has been adopted in the current interpretation of CSR pre-empts the pursuit to avoid bad practices, both in theory and in the implementation of CSR programmes. Moreover, the CSR-dominant interpretation leads to a particular terminological confusion and replaces the companies’ responsibility towards concrete stakeholders, which is appropriate for the economic activity, with an abstractly understood responsibility towards an abstractly understood society. In this sense, the conceptual analysis of the relationship between CSR and ethics reveals that one of the important sources of problems with CSR is joining this concept with an unsuitable model of ethics. This is not because of the alleged defects of the ethics of conviction, appreciated by Weber, among other thinkers, but because it is a model that, in fact, is not suitable for business ethics. If the ethics of conviction is private, then it cannot be used to regulate social relations. In conclusion, it may be stated that, paradoxically, a dominant way of thinking about the social responsibility of corporations leads more to separation than to bringing together ethics and business. CSR, in its current form, cannot be an efficient means of implementing ethical objectives in business because it defines the issue of social responsibility as a sphere of private beliefs and arbitrary interpretations. Therefore, it undermines the relevance of the proper and socially significant notion of responsibility for economic activities and their consequences. Of course, the CSR concept can and should be modified; the question remains as to whether eliminating the elements that bring it closer to the ethics of conviction does not actually translate into giving it up entirely.
