The goal of the paper is to identify characteristic features of the surfaces of rubbing bodies and friction products, which come into being when friction processes are realized under optimal conditions, regarding wear resistance. Mössbauer investigations carried out both in scattering and transmission arrangement have evidenced, between others, differences in oxides content and their phase composition, depending on the temperature of tribological system in the course of friction test. It has been found that the wear products obtained at the optimal temperature are composed of the much smaller particles than those produced at lower or at higher temperature.

The versatile application of titanium alloy in the aerospace industry and it’s hard to machine characteristics focus towards the additive manufacturing. The Ti-6Al-4V alloy is manufactured using the electron beam source with a novel method of prepositioned titanium alloy wires. The tribology of the additive manufactured titanium alloy under dry sliding condition is experimented and analysed using Taguchi technique. The targeted objective of minimum tribological responses are attained with the identified optimal parameters as load - 9.81 N, sliding velocity - 3 m/s, sliding distance - 3000 m for minimum specific wear rate and load - 9.81 N, sliding velocity - 3 m/s, sliding distance - 1000 m for minimum coefficient of friction. Among the parameters tested, load is found to be the dominant factor on the tribology of additively manufactured titanium alloy. The morphological analysis on the worn surface and debris revealed the existence of abrasion, delamination and adhesion wear mechanisms. The increase in the load dominantly showed the appearance of delamination mechanism.

Systematic examinations on wear behavior of stick/slip contact around metal on metal have shown that the dissipated energy and contact forces are two important parameters of wear of wheels and rails. Nevertheless, an accurate estimation of these parameters is still a great challenge. Recent developments of non-linear dynamical models and simulation of operational conditions have tried to find a solution of this challenge. These results are used as the input to calculations of wear propagation. Though, the dynamic model should be able to predict wheel-rail interaction with high accuracy. In addition, wheel-rail wear is a function of several other parameters whose their integrated influence becomes more than the main discussed ones. In this study, with the help of multi-body dynamics (MBD), an open wagon equipped with three pieces bogies, considering non-linear effects of friction wedges and structural clearances is modeled in Universal Mechanism. Tangent and curved sections of the track considering random vertical and lateral irregularities are simulated. The simulation results are used to calculate wear of both left and right wheels separately. Specht’s wear model based on Archard’s wear model is used. The studied parameters are the rail side coefficient of friction, track quality, track curvature, velocity and rail side wear. Finally, the effects of mentioned parameters are studied on wear depth and wear pattern of new wheel profiles under incompatible contact (which occurs in Iran railway network). The results show different wear volume and wear pattern compared to compatible contact.

Opis:
On the basis of a known relationship, an enhanced model for specific tire wear per kilometer has been developed. It is appropriate for practical use - for evaluation of the influence of different factors. Two types of experiments have been carried out with a testing device - one without sideslip, but with a known longitudinal slip, and the other one with the same longitudinal slip but also with a known sideslip. As a result, the coefficients of the proportion of the developed model have been evaluated. After the model validation, an analytical investigation concerning the influence of tire pressure, sideslip and longitudinal slip on the tire wear has been carried out. The results are presented graphically.
На основе известной зависимости разработана модель относительного износа шин в зависимости от пробега. Она подходящая для практического использования – оценки влияния разных факторов. Два типа эксперимента проведены с помощью испытательной установки – один без поперечного увода и с известным продольным скольжением, а другой с тем самым скольжением, но и с известным уводом. В результате получены коэффициенты пропорциональности модели. После проверки модели, проведено аналитическое исследование влияния давления в шине, увода и продольного скольжения на относительный износ шины. Приведены графические результаты.

In hot forging process, tool life is an important factor which influences the economy of production. Wear mechanisms in these processes are dependent on each other, so modeling of them is a difficult problem. The present research is focused on development of a hybrid tool wear model for hot forging processes and evaluation of adding adhesive mechanism component to this model. Although adhesive wear is dominant in cases, in which sliding distances are large, there is a group of hot forging processes, in which adhesion is an important factor in specific tool parts. In the paper, a proposed hybrid tool wear model has been described and various adhesive wear models have been reviewed. The feasible model has been chosen, adapted and implemented. It has been shown that adding adhesive wear model increases predictive capabilities of the global hybrid tool wear model as far as characteristic hot forging processes is considered.

The surfaces of the friction pairs in oscillatory motion are exposed to the complex wear processes. Scuffing is a specific wear process, which comprises abrasive and adhesive wear. This paper presents the results of the preliminary scuffing tests, conducted on the T-05 test machine under oscillatory motion in the line contact. The results obtained from the tests confirmed the high probability of the scuffing occurrence under the assumed tests conditions. This is the basis for the planning of further research in this area.
Powierzchnie par ciernych współpracujących w ruchu oscylacyjnym narażone są na złożone procesy zużycia tribologicznego. Szczególnym przypadkiem procesu zużycia jest scuffing, które łączy elementy zużycia ściernego i adhezyjnego. W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badań wstępnych zużycia scuffing wykonanych przez autorów na testerze T-05. Badania przeprowadzono na modelu rolka–klocek o styku liniowym w ruchu oscylacyjnym. Wyniki badań zużyciowych potwierdziły, że dla przyjętych wartości parametrów istnieje duże prawdopodobieństwo rozwoju zużycia scuffing. Uzyskane wyniki są podstawą do planowania dalszych badań w tym zakresie.

The paper provides a comprehensive presentation of the influence of operating parameters on the tribological properties of the wheel-rail couple. Apart from wear and a friction coefficient, the tribological properties also comprise stereological parameters of flaky wear products. The tribological tests were carried out according to an experimental plan, which took account of the complex influence of operational factors on the size and shape of flaky wear products. This enabled defining the type and intensity of wear, depending on the variable operational parameters. In order to explain the wear mechanism, quantitative, qualitative, and profilographometric metallographic examinations were made.

The process of conjoined stress cycling and abrasive or erosive wear is encountered in industry. However, very scant attention has been paid till now to this issue. The paper presents two test rigs designed and built to cope with this experimental problem. Tests were carried out on the range of pure iron (Armco), carbon steels namely S235JR, C45, C70U, C80U, C110U and unalloyed cast steels (L40III, L45III and L50III). Tested iron-based alloys differ in chemical composition, microstructure and Brinell hardness ranging from 80HB to 350HB. Stress cycling caused strain hardening of ferrite in hypoeutectoid steels and thus reduced their abrasive wear loss. In the hypereutectoid steel stress cycling impaired integrity of the microstructure thus increasing abrasive wear loss. Alternating stresses enhanced ploughing and cutting micromechanisms of erosion. Tensile stress in the tested cast steel had a stronger effect on wear loss than the prior stress history.

Tribological behaviour of coatings obtained from eutectic alloy Fe-Mn-C-B-Si-Ni-Cr was studied. The coatings were obtained by the method of gas metal arc welding (GMA) with use of powder wire. GMA welding method is widely used for the regeneration of machine parts. Eutectic Fe-Mn-C-B-Si-Ni-Cr alloys can be used to obtain high quality coatings resistant to wear and corrosion. Pin-on-disk dry sliding wear tests at sliding speeds 0.4 m/s and under load 10 MPa were conducted for pin specimens. During friction a typical tribological behavior was observed. The mechanism of wear was mechanical-chemical.

The paper presents results of a two-stage study on the tribocorrosive wear of ADI alloy cast iron containing Ni and Cu. In the first stage of the wear tests with use test rig type pin-on-plate, there were determined the parameters of the process of tribocorrosion of the ADI cast iron in 3.5% NaCl solution. In the second stage, the tests were carried out on a test rig simulating real operating conditions of chain wheels used in armoured face conveyors. The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the impact of the combined action of corrosive agents (water and NaCl) and quartz abrasive on the wear of the wheels tested. As part of the test, the abrasive wear in the presence of the abrasive material alone and in the presence of a mixture of the abrasive material, water and NaCl was determined. The microstructure and the hardness of the surface layer as a function of the distance from the surface were also determined. During the study it has been found that regardless of the type of test there is a synergy between the effects of corrosion and friction which led to an increase of the resulting wear by 30%.

In the case of mining machines, tribocorrosion damage is often observed. This type of consumption is caused by the joint action of mining environment factors such as abrasive and water. The search for methods to counteract tribocorrosion is of great practical importance, but it must be combined with the knowledge of methods of forecasting the value of wear. This paper presents a model of prediction of tribocorrosive wear adapted to corrodible materials – ADI containing Ni and Cu, with the strength class of 800 MPa – and results of a two-stage study on the tribocorrosive wear. Presented results indicate a distinct effect of synergy between friction and corrosion in the total wear of ADI. The tribocorrosion tests confimed the adequacy of the model developed for the ADI.

The paper presents the analytical assessment of main engine piston drawing out records and record of cylinder oil feed rates. Collated and analyzed the wear records of cylinder liners and piston rings of main engines installed in three ships on the basis of the measurements at main engine piston drawing out measured during dry dock main engine overhauls. System diagnostyki stanu narzędzia jest wciąż brakującym elementem wyposażenia zaawansowanych maszyn do obróbki skrawaniem. Efektywny układ tego typu zwiększyłby wydajność obróbki, przy jednoczesnym wzroście dokładności i niezawodności. Pozwoliłby również na pełną, elastyczną automatyzację wytwarzania. W artykule przedstawiono działający na tokarce CNC system wizyjny do diagnostyki stanu narzędzia przy toczeniu. Zdjęcie narzędzia wykonywane jest w określonych przerwach w obróbce, a następnie wyznaczany jest poziom zużycia ostrza wykorzystując do tego metody cyfrowego przetwarzania obrazu. Główną zaletą systemu jest możliwość oceny stanu ostrza skrawającego narzędzi o różnych geometriach. Ponadto system poprawnie wskazuje obszar zużycia ostrza niezależnie od własności powierzchni narzędzia, takich jak kolor, czy refleksyjność. Co więcej rozwiązano także problem powstawania narostów, które powodują błędne określenie poziomu zużycia. System testowano w czasie obróbki z zastosowaniem narzędzi o różnej geometrii i różnych powierzchniach zewnętrznych. Testy potwierdziły skuteczność układu.
This paper presents an on machine vision turning tool wear diagnosis system, mounted on the CNC lathe. The tool image is taken between subsequent operations, and then the tool wear is evaluated using digital image processing. The main advantage of the system is capacity of tool wear evaluation of tools with different geometry. Moreover, the system correctly indicates the area of tool wear, regardless of the tool surface properties, such as color or reflectivity. In addition there is also the appearance of an adhered chip problem solved. Without this achievement the system could not be able to indicate the tool wear correctly. The system performance was tested with two turning tools with different cutting edge angles. Tests were performed automatically during whole tool lives of both. The results verify the efficiency of the system.
