Opis:
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) generates between 1.4–1.75 kg/person/day of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) that accounts for over 16 million tons of MSW/year. The solid waste collected from different sources is dumped in landfills, thereby creating environmental concerns. In this paper, the potential of solid waste as an energy source (Waste to Energy (WTE)) for Reverse Osmosis (RO) water purification was evaluated. The KSA is known for its acute fresh water shortages and uses desalination technology in meeting its daily water requirements; a process that is energy intensive. The evaluation of the energy content of MSW shows a potential to produce about 927 MW in 2015, based on a total mass burn, and about 1,692 MW in 2032. The MSW-WTE plants can produce about 1.5% of the targeted 120 GW of energy for 2032. For the R.O system, it will give approximately 16.8% of the daily fresh water needed for total mass burn and 2.4% with the recycling option.

Opis:
Soil contamination is a common problem in our society. Several activities introduce contaminants in soils affecting their quality and future utilization. In order to invert this situation and to avoid further spreading of the contaminant several remediation technologies could be used. For soils contaminated with trichloroethylene (TCE), Soil Vapor Extraction (SVE) can be an efficient remediation technology. It involves the application of vacuum to the soil matrix creating an airflow that conduce the volatized contaminant to extraction wells that lead them to the exterior of the soil where they are properly treated. This work presents the results obtained in the soil vapor experiments performed in a laboratory using soils with different water contents contaminated with TCE. These experiments aimed the study of the influence of soil water content and the airflow used in the remediation time and on the process efficiency. The results showed that in sandy soils contaminated with TCE: a) for similar levels of contamination, the increase of the soil water content from 0 to 4% created an increase of the concentration of TCE in the gas phase of the soil, in some cases by almost 50%; b) the influence of water content is not significant being overlapped by influence of the airflow rate; c) SVE performed with higher airflow rates had shorter remediation times (in some cases four times shorter) without any significant impact on the process efficiencies (fluctuations of 1 to 3%); and d) for the experimented soils, the utilization of higher airflow rates led to shorter and consequently cheaper remediation.

This article describes the design of photo catalyst reactor for oil removing from produced water. Real produced water containing a combination of organic compounds was treated with zinc oxide nanoparticles. In this study, ultraviolet radiations were used to find the efficiency of removing the oil content from the water produced that brought from the Al-Ahdab oilfield in kut/ Iraq by advanced oxidation process (AOP) using (ZnO/UV) in batch system and continuous system. In batch system were studied the effect of zinc oxide concentration (nanoparticles), time of irradiation, and pH. The highest removal rate of oil from the produced water (100%) was obtained during the following optimal conditions: ZnO NPs as catalyst = 55 mg/L, pH =3, at the time of irradiation of 90 minutes in batch experiments. In the continuous system, the effects of flowrate, number of UV-A lamp and time of reaction were studied, the results obtained were the efficiency of decomposition decreases with increasing the flow rate of solution in reactor, the maximum removal efficiency of the process (ZnO/UV) was 80% at 20 mL/min and irradiation time 120 min. In general, zinc oxide is beneficial through its high oil adsorption capacity in addition, It lowers the amount of oil in the produced water.

The non-stationary moisture level of a cellular concrete wall board in a heated utility building located in the northern part of the town of Brest (Belarus), depending on the climatic influence, was assessed in this work. The results were obtained both in a calculation experiment and a physical test. It was observed that the main reason for the high moisture levels in cellular concrete is wind-driven rain intensifying the process of free capillary moisture transfer. A comparative analysis of the results of the physical test and the calculation experiment showed that the THSS software elaborated by the authors was able to predict the actual moisture levels of the shielding structure under study accurately enough when precise data concerning the thermal and physical characteristics of the materials as well as the occurring climatic influences were submitted.

The purpose of this research is to determine the effectiveness of turmeric and its best concentration in preserving the presto of lalawak fish based on the characteristics of microbiological tests and chemical tests including checking water content and pH. The research experimental method covered five treatments by adding turmeric extract solutions of 0%, 1%, 3%, 5%, and 7%. The test parameters observed in the research were microbiological tests using the method of TPC (Total Plate Count) in duplicate and chemical tests including checking water content and pH. The results showed that all treatments by adding turmeric extract were with concentrations of 1%, 3%, 5%, and 7% able to extend the shelf life presto of lalawak fish more than two days compared to the presto of lalawak fish which were not treated with turmeric extract or control (0%) which can only last two days. The treatment of the addition of 5% turmeric extract is able to provide the long lasting strength of lalawak fish for up to five days so that the shelf life is longer than other treatments, as evidenced by the TPC (Total Plate Count) value of 5.81×105 CFU / gram on the 6th day. The water content reached 67.5% on the 6th day and the pH value reached 6.50 on the 5th day.

Opis:
This work aimed to evaluate groundwater potability for the population through geochemical assessment methods on the example of aquifers in Krasnodar city. In 2016 and 2019, on the territory of Krasnodar city (Krasnodar region, Russian Federation), a detailed geochemical analysis of groundwater quality was performed based on a total of 6000 samples, 3000 samples per each year. Samples were taken from 30 wells located at depths of up to 450 m in the layers of Anthropogen and Neogene stages. Quantitative analysis of wells according to the average water quality parameters showed that in 15 wells, the water condition met the MAC (maximum allowable concentration) standards in all layers. Water abundance between the layers of the Quaternary and Cimmerian stages is seven times as different (p ≤ 0.001) towards the latter, the hardness between the same horizons is ten times as different (p ≤ 0.001) towards the Quaternary stage and three times as different (p ≤ 0.05) in terms of solid residue. Thus, the water hardness and water abundance index vary significantly between the vertical layers. A strong positive correlation between the solid residue and the hardness values (Pearson correlation 0.93, p ≤ 0.05), and a negative correlation between water abundance and solid residue values (Pearson correlation - 0.83, p ≤ 0.05), as well as between the hardness and water abundance values (Pearson correlation - 0.81, p ≤ 0.05) was recorded. These findings can be used for regions with similar deposits of rocks and aquifers.

Opis:
Samples of drinking water collected in Warka-Grójec region of central Poland were tested for the presence of pesticides. Data obtained from analysis of water samples will be used for future epidemiological and environmental studies in the region. Samples were collected during spring and autumn of 2002-2003 from dug wells, deep wells and water mains in 81 randomly-selected rural households scattered throughout this region of extensive agriculture. The concentration of pesticides from four main chemical groups was determined by gas chromatography: organochlorines (lindane, DDT, methoxychlor), triazines (atrazine, simazine), organophosphates (acephate, diazinon, fenitrothion) and pyrethroids (alpha-cypermethrin, deltamethrin). Two-year monitoring of drinking water samples indicated the presence of DDT and methoxychlor contamination. Pyrethroids were generally not detected, with the exception of alpha-cypermethrin found in only a few samples. Triazines were also found in water samples collected in the course of the study with higher incidence during spring period. Organophosphates were by far the most common contaminants of drinking water in this region. Almost all samples were contaminated by signifi cant amounts of fenitrothion. The present study reveals an urgent need for systematic monitoring of drinking water quality in regions of intensive agriculture, since they are highly vulnerable to pesticide contamination. Consumption of pesticide-contaminated water may have a negative impact on the population living in this area, which also requires scientifi c assessment.

The paper describes effects of shale content, porosity and water- and gas saturation on elastic parameters of rocks. The analysis was based on theoretical relationships for porous media, known as the Biot-Gassmann's and Kuster and Toksöz's models, and on Raymer-Hunt-Gardner formulas. Well-logging data and results of the quantitative interpretation of well logs were also analysed. The relationships between P-wave and S-wave velocities and reservoir parameters may contribute to solving some problems associated with seismic interpretation of wave forms in Miocene gas deposits in the Carpathian Foredeep.

The objectives of the research were to: fulfil the preliminary assessment of the sensitivity of the soil, water, atmosphere, and plant and denitrification and decomposition models to variations of climate variables based on the existing soil database; validate the soil, water, atmosphere, and plant and denitrification and decomposition modelled outcomes against measured records for soil temperature and water content. The statistical analyses were conducted by the sensitivity analysis, Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency coefficients and root mean square error using measured and modelled variables during three growing seasons. Results of sensitivity analysis demonstrated that: soil temperatures predicted by the soil, water, atmosphere, and plant model showed a more reliable sensitivity to the variations of input air temperatures; soil water content predicted by the denitrification and decomposition model had a better reliability in the sensitivity to daily precipitation changes. The root mean square errors and Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency coefficients demonstrated that: the soil, water, atmosphere, and plant model had a better efficiency in predicting seasonal dynamics of soil temperatures than the denitrification and decomposition model; and among two studied models, the denitrification and decomposition model showed a better capability in predicting the seasonal dynamics of soil water content.

A major risk inherent in dam reservoirs is eutrophication, which raises technological problems during treatment of the water taken in from the reservoir or drawn from the river downstream from the reservoir. Based on the data obtained for the basin of the dam reservoir under construction in Swinna Poreba, model computations were carried out to determine the content of phosphorus compounds for the water of the intended artificial lake. The calculated value of the predicted phoshorus content of the water stored in the reservoir averaged 131 mgP/m3, 98 mgP/m3 and 68 mgP/m3 in a dry year, average year and wet year, respectively. The results of those computations make it clear that the eutrophication risk for the water stored in the reservoir is high, and that, furthermore, the occurrence of hypertrophy has to be expected during dry years. Experience gained during operation of artificial reservoirs of a similar structure, which face the problem of discharging treated wastewater in amounts endangering the quality of the water stored in the reservoir, demonstrate that the safest solution to the problem is discharge of the wastewater downstream from the dam.
