Opis:
For the purpose of this study, seven biotic systems were chosen to assess the quality of wet pond water within the aquifer of Wroclaw and in the bordering old Olawa river basin: BMWP-PL, ASPT, BBI, FBI, TBI, CBS and EPT. They all entail zoobenthic communities, whose composition changes with increasing pollution of the aquatic environment. The results obtained were compared with the values of some physicochemical parameters of the water, which enabled the applicability of the biotic systems to be evaluated. The water within the area under study was also analyzed for biodiversity. For this purpose calculations were performed to determine the domination and frequency of particular species and families at the sampling sites, as well as to establish the values of the Hurlbert and Margalef biodiversity indices. Both physicochemical and biological parameters make it clear that water quality in the area of the aquiferous layers is generally poor: species of comparatively high resistance to water pollutants were found to occur even at sampling sites characterized by great biodiversity. Water quality in all of the wet ponds examined has been classified either as acceptable or in some instances even as unacceptable. The results obtained support the applicability of the BMWP-PL index and recommend its use on a larger scale in Poland.

Opis:
The Timok River (202 km long, 4547 km2 basin area) is located in East Serbia. It is a right tributary of the Danube River and one of the most polluted watercourses in Serbia. On the basis of the data provided by the Republic Hydrometeorological Service of Serbia, the paper presents an analysis of water quality and pollution using the combined physico-chemical WPI index (Water Pollution Index) calculated for two periods - 1993-96 and 2006-2009 at four hydrological stations: Zaječar-Gamzigrad (Crni Timok River), Zaječar (Beli Timok River), Rgotina (Borska Reka River) and Čokonjar (Timok River). The following parameters were taken into consideration: dissolved O2, O2 saturation, pH, suspended sediments, Five Day Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD5), Chemical Oxygen Demand (CODMn), nitrites, nitrates, orthophosphates, ammonium, metals (Cu, Fe, Mn, Hg, Ni, Zn, Cd), sulphates and coliform germs. The average WPI values were calculated for the observed periods based on the comparison of the annual average values of the listed parameters and defined standard values for the I water quality class (according to the Regulation on the Hygienic Acceptability of Potable Water of the Republic of Serbia). The highest pollution degree was recorded in the Borska Reka River, where heavy metal levels (especially manganese and iron) were significantly increased. These metals are indicators of inorganic pollution (primarily caused by copper mining). Also, increased values of the organic pollution indicators (ammonium, coliform germs, Five-Day Biological Oxygen Demand - BOD5) in the Borska Reka and the Timok rivers are the result of uncontrolled domestic wastewater discharge.

In the study suitability of water quality index approach and environmetric methods in fi ngerprinting heavy metal pollution as well as comparison of spatial variability of multiple contaminants in surface water were assessed in the case of The Gediz River Basin, Turkey. Water quality variables were categorized into two classes using factor and cluster analysis. Furthermore, soil contamination index was adapted to water pollution index and used to fi nd out the relative relationship between the reference standards and the current situation of heavy metal contamination in water. Results revealed that surface water heavy metal content was mainly governed by metal processing, textile and tannery industries in the region. On the other hand, metal processing industry discharges mainly degraded quality of water in Kemalpasa and Menemen. Furthermore, Kemalpasa region has been heavily affected from tannery and textile industries effl uents. Moreover, pollution parameters have not been infl uenced by changes in physical factors (discharge and temperature). This study indicated the effectiveness of water quality index approach and statistical tools in fi ngerprinting of pollution and comparative assessment of water quality. Both methods can assist decision makers to determine priorities in management practices.

Opis:
The paper deals with sediments of anthropogenic reservoirs from the central part of the Katowice Upland. Over most of the area, the original relief was considerably altered due to many-years’ mining of hard coal, historical mining and processing of zinc-lead ores, smelting of iron and non-ferrous metals, and chemical and machinery industries. The changes in land surface give rise to mining collapse areas transformed to water reservoirs. Sediment samples (103 samples in total) were collected form artificial lakes, ponds and settling ponds. Samples were air-dried, sieved through a 0.2-mm nylon sieve and digested in aqua regia. Contents ofAg, Al, As, Ba, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, Mo, Ni, P Pb, S, Sn, Sr, Ti, Vand Zn in the samples were determined by the ICP-OES method. Mercury content was measured using the CV-AAS method. To assess the extent of sediment contamination the Index of Geoaccumulation (Igeo) and the ecotoxicological (Threshold Effect Concentration and Probable Effect Concentration) criterion were used. The sediments show very different chemical compositions. The content of trace elements varies from values lower than the regional geochemical background of the Silesian-Cracow region to extremely high concentrations. Distribution of many toxic chemical elements is characterized by high spatial variability and a strong dependence on the location of pollution sources. About 60% of analysed samples were heavily contaminated due to the very high concentration of cadmium (up to 905.9 mg/kg), lead (up to 25,081 mg/kg) and zinc (up to 45,361 mg/kg) as well as arsenic (up to 2,220 mg/kg), chromium (up to 901 mg/kg) and mercury (up to 11.80 mg/kg). Due to the concentration of metals (TEC and PEC values) almost 80% of the sediments can be harmful to aquatic organisms, as well as to wild animals that consume them. The main cause of harm is the very high concentrations of cadmium, lead and zinc, less of silver, arsenic, chromium, copper and nickel.

Opis:
The Sea of Azov is the smallest and shallowest sea in the world with low salinity. Such properties determine its susceptibility to degradation due to anthropogenic activities. The Azovstal Iron & Steel Works in Mariupol (Ukraine) is one of the main sources of pollution of the Azov Sea. Adverse impact of the steelworks is associated primarily with the large amount of technological and cooling wastewater discharged into the sea. The paper presents the impact assessment results of wastewater discharge on the sea water quality and the ecological conditions in the discharge zone. The assessment was performed using local Ukrainian methodologies as well as applicable surface water quality standards. The comprehensive assessment was based on the three numerical integrated indicators of sea water quality: the Water Quality Index (WJW), the Water Pollution Index (WZW), the Integrated Ecological State Index (ZWSE), and the so called principle of aggregation. Based on the assessment results it was demonstrated that the wastewater discharge from the Azovstal Iron & Steel Works leads to significant increase in water pollution in the coastal zone which brings threat to the marine ecosystem and limits all types of water consumption.

Various activities such as farming, industry, household waste, fish pond, and fishery can possibly affect the estuarine and coastal ecosystem. Demak waters, located to the east of Tanjung Emas Semarang, become an influential element of fishery industry that mostly produces anchovies and shrimps. This research was aimed at (1) analyzing the spatial distribution of heavy metal Pb and Cd in the surface water and sediment; and (2) investigating the abundance of coliform in Demak waters. Moreover, in this research, water pollution index was also analyzed and compared to other polluted water areas. It was found that the Pb content ranged from 0.6037 to 0.6647 mg·1–1 whereas the Cd content ranged from 0.064 to 0.1707 mg·1–1. Both lead and cadmium contents had surpassed the water quality standard. The Pb content in sediment ranged from 0.563 to 0.6823 mg·kg-1 whereas the Cd content reached 0.0047 to 0.0577 mg·kg-1. It showed that this sediment was not polluted by Pb and Cd. The analysis of water pollution index revealed that the pollution level found in Morosari, Rejo, Tuntang, and Lohbener estuary was low. On the other hand, Wedung and Serang estuary were heavily polluted. Compared to some previous studies, most of Pb and Cd contents in Demak waters were greater. However, lead and cadmium content in sediment was lower.

A good water quality is essential to sustaining the life of the organisms. The determination of water quality is needed as a direction to monitoring the water pollution. The purpose of this study is to examine the quality of the water and to determine the water pollution index based on the physicochemical parameters in Mimika waters, Indonesia. The sampling of water quality was carried out in October 2016 at six stations (Moga, Puriri, Inaoga, Keakwa, Atuka and Pomako waters). Then, the results were compared with the standard of sea water quality for biota marine based on the Decree of the Minister of Environment No. 51 year 2004. This study showed that the physicochemical parameters of the waters, such as water turbidity, BOD, NH3 and heavy metals (Hg, As, Cd, Pb, Cu, Zn, Ni and Cr), are still appropriate to the biota marine in all study stations. However, there is a parameter for which the quality standards were exceed in all locations, including water salinity for coral and seagrass, NO3, PO4 and H2S. The result of pollution index calculation at coastal waters Mimika are classified as lightly polluted (Keakwa and Pomako waters), and moderately polluted (Moga, Puriri, Inaoga and Atuka waters) with the pollution index values of 3.51 to 6.95. It is important to notice that the parameters of quality standards which had been exceed such as NO3, PO4 and H2S are the environmental parameter for nutrient elements and can trigger eutrophication in the waters.

Batujai reservoir is located in Central Lombok Regency, Indonesia. The government and local people use it for hydropower generation, drinking water, agricultural irrigation, fish farming, and tourism. The phenomenon of growing population and increasing industrial activities in the catchment area of Batujai reservoir always result in the discharge of various pollutants into the aquatic environment and cause the blooming of water hyacinth over almost 30% of the reservoir area. The aim of this study was to determine the water pollution index of Batujai reservoir. The samples were analysed for the following parameters: pH, temperature, DO, COD, BOD, TSS, and heavy metals. The research was done by using purposive sampling method and determination of water quality status with STORET method based on Government Regulation No. 82/2001. The measurement results show that the physical and chemical parameters of the Batujai reservoir water do not exceed the quality standard are the temperature (29 to 32°C); pH (6.6 to 7.5 mg/L); nitrate (0.421 to 0.546 mg/L); Cd (0.0005 to 0.005 mg/L); Cr (<0.001 to 0.018 mg/L); and the parameters that exceed quality standards are DO (3.8 to 4.9 mg/L); BOD (3.03 to 4.21 mg/L); COD (6.8 to 10.1 mg/L); phosphate (0.181 to 0.237 mg/L); and Pb (0.14 to 0.24 mg/L). The water quality status of Batujai reservoir was heavily polluted for standard quality on class I, II, III and moderately polluted for class IV.

This study aims to assess the water quality and determine the pollution index of the Bedadung River in the urban-area segment of Jember Regency, East Java. The sampling in the urban segment of Jember was conducted in May 2019 at five different locations, namely Slamet Riyadi Street, Mastrip Street, Bengawan Solo Street, Sumatra Street, and Imam Bonjol Street. The pollution index assessment refers to the Decree of the State Minister for the Environment of Indonesia Republic number 115 of 2003. The analysis showed that the parameters of TDS, TSS, pH, COD, BOD, NH3-N, Co, Cd, Cu, Zn, H2S, Cl–, SO4, oil and fats, MBAS, NO2-N, Fe, Pb, F, Cl2, NO3-N, phenol, and As did not exceed the quality standards. The parameters PO4, CN, total coliform, and faecal coliform were found to breach the quality standards at the 5 water sampling points. Total coliform and faecal coliform were the dominant pollutants in this segment. Therefore, the parameters of PO4, total coliform, and faecal coliform were considered as indicators of pollution arising from domestic and agricultural activities. The pollution index values for the five sampling locations ranged from 7.21 to 8.23. These scores indicate that the Bedadung River section that passes through the urban segment in Jember is classified as being in the moderately polluted category. This preliminary rapid assessment is therefore one of the considerations for the management of water quality in the Bedadung River section that passes through the urban area of Jember.

The use of phytoplankton as an indicator of water pollution is a promising tool for assessment of water quality. The purpose of this study was to determine whether diversity indices, including the species richness and diversity of phyto-plankton, could be used for reliable assessment of water quality in the Wadaslintang Reservoir in Indonesia. Surveys were conducted monthly at eight sites, from July 2019 to October 2019. Phytoplankton was collected during the day at 10:00 until approximately 15:00 in the euphotic zone. The parameters investigated were species richness and the abundance of phytoplankton, as well as water quality parameters listed in Government Regulation Number 82 of 2001. The level of pollution was represented biologically by the Shannon–Wiener diversity index and physicochemically by the STORET (storage and retrieval of water quality data) index. Moreover, the two indices were compared to determine whether a particular diversity index was more effective for assessment of this reservoir. The results showed that during the dry season, 22 taxa of phytoplankton were present, belonging to Cyanophyta, Chlorophyta, Chrysophyta, and Euglenophyta. During the wet season, 29 taxa were found, belonging to Cyanophyta, Chlorophyta, and Chrysophyta. Based on the Shannon-Wiener index and STORET index, water quality was better during the wet season than during the dry season. The results of water quality assessment using both indices were consistent, but the diversity index was a more sensitive indicator of pollution levels. Therefore, the Shannon–Wiener index is a useful tool for assessment of water quality in the Wadaslintang Reservoir.

Warna and Pengilon Lakes are very close to each other and connected with the sill, a famous tourist destination in the Dieng Plateau Java. Land-use changes are the main problem that affected the lakes. The conversion of forest into an agricultural area had induced erosion and increased the volume of nutrients discharged to the lake due to high use of fertilisers in potatoes farms. In the dry seasons, water from those lakes was pumped to irrigate agricultural land. This study aimed to determine the water quality of Warna and Pengilon Lakes based on physical, chemical parameters, and phytoplankton communities. Water samples were collected from 4 sites at each lake to analyse biological oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, and total nitrogen (TN). Temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), turbidity, and conductivity (EC) were measured in-situ. During this research, turbidity and BOD in Warna and Pengilon Lakes exceeded the Indonesian water quality standard. Based on the STORET method, the water quality of Lake Warna was assessed as highly polluted for all classes. However, based on the pollution index (PI), Lake Warna was slightly to moderately polluted, as well as the saprobic index was in the β-mesosaprobic phase. Based on the species diversity index of phytoplankton, both Warna and Pengilon Lakes were moderately polluted. The long-term monitoring studies are necessary as an early warning sign of water quality degradation. Therefore, they provide insight into the overall ecological condition of the lake and can be used as a basis for developing suitable lake management.

Opis:
The leachate coming from the landfill is a serious problem. This is because the leachate water can contaminate the wells of the residents around the landfill. This research was conducted at Jabon Landfill located in Jabon District of Sidoarjo Regency, East Java Province, Indonesia. Jabon Landfill has been operating since 2003 with a controlled landfill system that has triggered environmental risks due to the leachate output. The purpose of this study was to determine the classification of the shallow groundwater quality status based on the pollution index (PI) around Jabon Landfill at a distance of around 250 meters, 500 meters and 1,000 meters from the landfill. The pollution index was determined by analyzing the pollutant concentration consisting of these following parameters: pH, BOD, COD and Fe. The results of the analysis show that the pH parameter had a higher value than the pH at Jabon Landfill of 7.2–7.5. The pH at Jabon Landfill was 6.35. The Fe parameter shows that the value of 1.694 in the groundwater well closest to Jabon Landfill and the wells further away indicates that the Fe concentration was lower for the latter, namely 0.081 at a distance of up to 200 meters. On the basis of the Pollution Index, the highest value was 5.45 at Well 7 is located 196 m from Jabon Landfill. Meanwhile, the well furthest from Jabon Landfill at a distance of 1,000 m showed a lightly polluted status with a Pollution Index of 1.91. The further the location of the well away from Jabon Landfill, the Pollution Index value tended to decrease. This means that the pollution status generally improves. Overall, the pollution status of the 18 wells shows that 2 wells are moderately polluted, 15 wells are lightly polluted and 1 well is in good condition.

Opis:
Water pollution in rivers is still a crucial problem for the countries that use river water as the primary water source. This study aimed to determine the water quality of the Musi river and the content of heavy metals in water, sediment and mussels as well as to predict the water quality of the Musi river in the next five years. The water samples were taken from 18 stations (sampling points) from upstream to downstream to be checked physically, chemically and biologically. Prediction of the river water quality was made using the QUAL2Kw software. The research results show that the Musi River water is categorized as lightly polluted with concentrations of TSS and DO that have passed the threshold. The heavy metals in river water, such as Pb and Cr have also passed the quality standard. The Fe, Mn, and Zn concentrations are pretty high in the sediment. In turn, in mussels, the metals measured were Fe, Cu, and Zn. The prediction results reveal that several values of the river quality parameters will pass the threshold value with the same pattern tendency from each station.
