In this article the authors raise the question of how to understand the concept of counter-history. In addition, the authors deal with the relationship between counter-history and historiography. In the fi rst part of the text, Counter history and the construction of the community, Maria Solarska refers to the diff erence between the legal-philosophical discourse and the historicopolitical discourse, the diff erence worked out by Michel Foucault. Th e second part of the text, Historiography as a form of counter-history, Maciej Bugajewski refers to Walter Benjamin’s On the concept of history and analyzes the counter-history as a practice of change in real history.

In der Philosophie Walter Benjamins lässt sich eine Tendenz zu einem Ineinanderumschlagen und Sich-Übereinanderschieben zweier Einheiten beobachten – der Einheit der Zahl (als Begriffsidentität) und der Einheit der Konfiguration (als Bild). Die Folge davon ist der Umstand, dass Benjamin – wie bereits Adorno bemerkt hat – anstelle der ‚verpflichtenden Aussage‘ eine metaphorische setzt, dass er über einen Begriff spricht, jedoch im Modus des Bildes. Im vorliegenden Artikel wird aufgezeigt, dass der von Benjamin, wie es scheint, intendierten Unzulänglichkeit der Trennung von Mythos und Geschichte, der Kritik am Technischen und einer Faszination für das Meta-Technische, sein ambivalentes Verhältnis zur Zahl (als der unbedingten Grenze) zugrunde liegt.
W filozofii Waltera Benjamina można zaobserwować tendencję do wzajemnego zmieniania się i zachodzenia na siebie dwóch jedności – jedności liczby (jako tożsamości pojęcia) i jedności konfiguracji (jako obrazu). Konsekwencją tego jest okoliczność, iż Benjamin – jak zauważył już Adorno – zamiast ,wypowiedzi zobowiązującej‘ ustanawia wypowiedź metaforyczną, iż mówi o pojęciu, lecz czyni to na sposób obrazu. Niniejszy artykuł wykazuje, iż niedostateczność oddzielenia mitu i historii, krytyki techniki i oczarowania przestrzenią meta-techniczną, która wydaje się być intencją Benjamina, ma swe źródło w jego ambiwalentnym stosunku do liczby (jako koniecznej granicy).
A perceptible tendency in Walter Benjamin’s philosophy is the mutual substitution and overlapping of the two distinct unities – that of the number (as an identity of idea) and that of configuration (as a picture). Therefore, as already Adorno observed, Benjamin in lieu of a ,binding statement‘ postulates a figurative statement, for even though he talks of an idea, he presents it in visual terms, as a picture. The paper aims to demonstrate that lack of a sufficiently precise distinction between myth and history, criticism of technique and fascination with meta-technical space – which appears to be Benjamin’s intention – has its source in his ambivalent attitude to the number (as an indispensable boundary).

I w swojej metodologii i w polityce Walter Benjamin pozostaje wierny zasadzie by postępować “zawsze radykalnie, nigdy konsekwentnie”. Dlatego dla współczesnych badaczy/ek miasta zainspirowanych jego dziełem największym wyzwaniem jest operacjonalizacja jego materialistycznej metodologii. Materializm antropologiczny Benjamina przekracza granice dyscyplin naukowych, mieszcząc się – wedle określenia T.W. Adorno – “na granicy magii i pozytywizmu”. Punktem przejścia jednego w drugie jest obraz dialektyczny. Aby dojść do tego punktu, Benjamin przeprowadza serię eksperymentów percepcyjnych i analitycznych, które można potraktować jako swoiste etiudy dialektyczne, „ćwiczenia w patrzeniu”. Artykuł wyodrębnia takie techniki z pism Benjamina, wskazuje na ich filozoficzne podłoże oraz testuje je poprzez badanie współczesnego przykładu. Jest nim ogromny berliński pomnik komunisty Ernsta Thälmanna, na zmianę brudzony przez graficiarzy i czyszczony przez lewicowy kolektyw.
In his methodology as well as his political thought Benjamin remains faithful to the principle to proceed “always radically, never consistently”. Therefore, the greatest challenge for a contemporary city researcher inspired by Benjamin is to operationalise his materialist methodology. Benjamin’s anthropological materialism cannot be reached within the fixed limits of any discipline, but rather places itself“on the crossroads of magic and positivism” (Adorno); the dialectical image is nota tool of his methodology but its culminating point where positivism turns to magic.To reach this point, Benjamin conducts perceptive and analytical experiments that can be treated as dialectical études, exercises in seeing. The paper examines some of these techniques, exploring their philosophical context and testing them on a contemporary example: the Ernst-Thälmann-Monument in Berlin.

Divine violence, says Walter Benjamin in his Critique of Violence, is “the sign and seal but never the means of sacred execution.” A Ukrainian writer Serhiy Zhadan in his 2015 collection of poetry and translations The Life of the Virgin Mary, frames his narrative of the war in Donbas as dystopia with divine violence being the driving force. The text also problematizes the possibility of a dialogue as the means to stop subjective violence.
Boska przemoc jest, jak twierdzi Walter Benjamin w Krytyce Przemocy: znakiem i pieczęcią, ale nigdy środkiem świętej egzekucji. Ukraiński pisarz i poeta Serhij Żadan w wyda- nym w 2015 roku zbiorze poezji i przekładów pt. Żywot Maryi, wkomponowuje swą narrację o wojnie w Donbasie jako dystopii w ramy owej boskiej przemocy, stanowiącej jej siłę napędową. W tekście przedmiotem refleksji uczyniono także możliwość dialogu jako środ- ka powstrzymującego subiektywną przemoc.

The paper discusses the possibility of a cinematic image which represents future catastrophes, while avoiding ideological entrapments and self-serving fantasies. Taking a Japanese ghost story and a brief note by Walter Benjamin as his dual starting point, the author first attempts to define the possible dangers inherent to the very idea of showing the future, the most important being the danger of the premature, cathartic discharge of the spectator’s anxiety in a sadistic/voyeuristic show. After discussion of the mechanisms of this discharge, the author offers an analysis of a positive example, namely Michael Haneke’s Time of the Wolf. According to the analysis, Haneke manages to avoid the traps by constructing reflective images that make the spectators watch themselves as they are searching in vain for the cathartic images of the catastrophe.

This essay is a discussion of the task of the avant-garde, and it presents it as an implication of Benjamin's weak messianism, as a „weak universalism” – a construction of democratic art. There is a similarity between the art of Malevich, Beuys, Warhol and internet art, which consists in efforts to build a transhistorical art pieces, which contains the conditions of possibility of all art pieces, but which is at the same time accessible to the widest public. This is the translation of the original text published „The Weak Universalism” in e-flux magazine, issue 15/2010.

Opis:
Siegfried Lenz’s novella (2008, English edition 2009) has not only been appreciated by literary critics, but also turned out to be a great bestseller. The novella is a frequent subject of research analysis, es- pecially in terms of its location in the tradition of German and world novella writing. This diversity of reception is astonishing and presents an interesting phenomenon. The novella tells a banal love story, but through an intentional silence and a series of intertextual tropes it also creates mysteriousness. The analysis proposed here is based on Walter Benjamin’s notion of “aura” in the 1930s. From today’s point of view, this concept requires a few additions, primarily from the perspective of systems theory. As it turns out this concept can be applied both to the content of the novella and to the strategy of literary criticism, as well as to explain the role of form and context in the personal perception of the text.

Artykuł stanowi próbę krytyki mechanizmów konserwatywnej historiografii na przykładzie wybranych dyskusji w obrębie historii społecznej dotyczących ostatnich lat ancien régime’u. Współczesne spory historyków i historyczek zostają zanalizowane pod kątem metodologicznym i pojęciowym. Celem artykułu jest ufilozoficznienie problemów przypisanych do pola historycznego oraz rozpoznanie ich stawek politycznych. Efektem tych analiz jest wypracowanie bardziej uniwersalnych schematów krytyki narracji konserwatywnej w historiografii oraz przedstawienie paru wskazówek do pisania interdyscyplinarnej historiografii emancypacyjnej, która twórczo czerpałaby z tradycji lewicowej makrohistorii, filozoficznych krytyk historii i historii oddolnej.
This article presents a critique of mechanisms employed by conservative historiography. It is grounded in an analysis of selected discussions in the field of social history which focus on the last period of the Ancien Régime. Furthermore, the article presents a methodological and conceptual analysis of contemporary historical polemics. The aim is to transform problems that are typically considered as strictly historical into philosophical problems and to identify their political stakes. As a result, schemes implicit to conservative narration are sketched, and ideas for an interdisciplinary, emancipatory historiography are discussed. The envisioned perspective would simultaneously draw from the achievements of history from below, leftist macro-history and a philosophical critique of history.

This essay addresses the instable meaning of the term catastrophe over the course of history. The first part takes leave of the “the tiny fissures” in the continuous catastrophe noted by Walter Benjamin to develop a philology of the catastrophe. This philology does not only register a given meaning (for instance, of the catastrophe), but intervenes actively as disruption. It insists on the strophe in the catastrophe, transforming catastrophe into cata/strophe that, in fatal situations, permits the poetic potential to become a dynamic force that can, at least on the linguistic level, open toward other dimensions without denying the catastrophe itself. The second part is dedicated to a reading of Jorge Semprún’s autobiographical novel L’écriture ou la vie from the perspective of this philological concept. It seeks to show how Semprún’s citing and reciting of Baudelaire’s strophes in the putrid atmosphere of the Buchenwald concentration camp literally produce, on the level of the signifiers, fresh air to breathe.

Dangers of salvation This review of Sprawiedliwość na końcu języka. Czytanie Waltera Benjamina by Adam Lipszyc locates the book in the framework of a wider phenomenon of interest in Walter Benjamin’s writings in contemporary Polish humanities. Author of the review indicates the basic assumption of homogeneity of the Benjamin’s writings, involving continuous elaboration of the “justice act” formula. The resulting preference for theological perspective, which becomes axiological frame for the analysis contained in the book, is questionable to reviewer. Despite these methodological concerns, the review underlines the impressive character of the analyzes conducted by Lipszyc, including not only a detailed reconstruction of Benjamin’s thought, but also the broader context of the philosophy of the twentieth century. The most important idea for literary studies turns out to be a dialectical relationship between philosophy and literature (criticism, history, translatology), which is being introduced by Lipszyc following Benjamin’s work.

Artykuł stanowi propozycję wykorzystania interpretacyjnych narzędzi żydowskiego mesjanizmu w celu osłabienia dyskursu umacniających się na Zachodzie narodowych populizmów. Zawiera analizę oryginalnej koncepcji słabego mesjanizmu Waltera Benjamina, jej ponownego odczytania przez Gianniego Vattimo oraz pozornie polemicznej propozycji Harolda Blooma, która słabości Benjaminowskiego mesjasza zdaje się przeciwstawiać siłę mocnego poety. Nacisk położony zostaje na reinterpretacyjne otwarcie zawarte w teoriach Benjamina, Vattimo i Blooma, pozwalające znaleźć odpowiedź na wpisane w narodowy populizm triumf i powrót mitu. Słaby mesjanizm jest przedstawiony jako interpretacyjna forma oporu przed zawłaszczeniem historii i próbą jej domknięcia. W katastrofalnej kondycji współczesności można bowiem upatrywać szansy na otwarcie przed słabą myślą możliwości skutecznego rozmontowania struktur mitu.
The paper proposes to use interpretative tools of Jewish messianism in order to weaken the discourse of national populisms that currently have gained strength in the political landscape of the West. It contains an analysis of the original conception of weak messianism elaborated by Walter Benjamin, its reading by Gianni Vattimo, and seemingly polemical proposition by Harold Bloom, who contrasts the weakness of Benjamin’s messiah with the strength of the late poet. Examining the theories of Benjamin, Vattimo, and Bloom, it puts an emphasis on the reinterpretative opening that allows finding the answer to the triumph and return of the mythical embedded in the national populism. The paper maintains that weak messianism could be seen as an interpretative form of resistance against the populist appropriation of history, seeing in the contemporary catastrophic condition a chance for the weak thought to effectively dismantle the structures of the myth.

Praca stanowi próbę odczytania kondycji współczesnego kapitalizmu konsumpcyjnego przez pryzmat działań mesjańskich. Celem autora jest odpowiedź na pytanie, czy możliwa jest subwersja mechanizmów utowarowienia z wnętrza kapitalizmu, a jeśli tak – w jaki sposób miałaby się ona dokonać. Matrycą teoretyczną rozważań będą osadzone w tradycji kabały luriańskiej pisma Waltera Benjamina, z uwzględnieniem ich późniejszej krytyki. Efektem końcowym pracy będzie zarysowanie figury „mesjańskiego śmieciarza” oraz wyjaśnienie, dlaczego to właśnie ona została przez autora wybrana jako podmiot mesjańskiej subwersji kapitalizmu.
The paper attempts at interpreting the condition of contemporary consumer capitalism through the prism of messianic enterprise. The aim is to consider the possibility of subverting commoditization from the inside and to outline potential ways of doing this. The theoretical matrix of the paper are Walter Benjamin’s works set in the tradition of Isaac Luria’s kaballah, along with their further criticism.The final result of the paper should be the figure of a “messianic dustman”and explanation why it has been chosen as the subject of subverting capitalism.

Taubes sugeruje, że podważenie idei transcendentalnego Boga pociąga za sobą nieuchronnie zrównanie tradycyjnych podziałów społecznych. Czerpiąc z myśli Alexisa de Tocqueville’a, autor pokazuje następnie, że związek teologii i polityki można rozumieć w sposób bardziej zniuansowany, co pozwala na podtrzymanie żywej, auntentycznej wiary religijnej w czasach demokratycznej równości. Za pomocą pojęć i figur intelektualnych zaczerpniętych z pism Waltera Benjamina autor opisuje, w jaki sposób Tocqueville stara się ułożyć relacje między świeckim i świętym bez konieczności sięgania po klasyczne, liberalne rozwiązanie problemu teologiczno-politycznego polegające na wprowadzeniu państwa nautralnego światopoglądowo.

Opis:
The paper is a modest attempt at a careful assessment of Werner Hamacher’s version of deconstruction as a reading strategy which centers upon the idea of the afformative caesura. In order to probe the potential and the possible limits of Hamacher’s strategy, the author presents a Hamacherian reading of one of Paul Celan’s poems, titled “Mauerspruch,” a poem brimming with references to Walter Benjamin’s work. In the first part of the paper the author shows the effectiveness of Hamacherian perspective. In the second part, however, following suggestions of the poem itself, the author shows that the perspective should be extended in order to include two crucial categories: the category of the image and the category of memory. Thus, ultimately, the assessment of Werner Hamacher’s strategy results in a praise and a modest proposal of its amendment.

The author reconstructs and comments on the views of Theodor W. Adorno with regard to Kafka’s works. They reflect the truth in details at most, never entirely. Therefore, they contradict Hegel’s philosophy. The author also points out that Kafka cannot be seen as a critic of capitalism, as Adorno perceives him.
