Opis:
Due to low costs, PLC controllers are used not only in technological processes but also in everyday life. The article presents the possibility of using a PLC controller to control the operation of a sliding gate. For this purpose, a design was created and a sliding gate model made controlled with a Siemens S7-1200 PLC controller. This model is used to develop various gate control algorithms, especially for appropriate gate protection against crushing or uncontrolled closing. In addition, this model is connected via the Internet to a stand equipped with the SCADA application. The iFix 5.8 PL application was used to visualise the operation of the door, which, by means of a communication driver, allows the elevator operation to be controlled remotely. In addition, elements are shown in a graphic way, whereby it is possible to assess the position of the gate.

Opis:
The Learning Activity Management System (LAMS) provides a web-based environment for the creation, sharing, running and monitoring of Learning Designs. A central feature of LAMS is the visual authoring environment, where educators use a drag-and-drop environment to create sequences of learning activities. The visualisation is based on boxes representing discrete activity tools (forum, chat, quiz, content, etc.) which are connected together using arrowed lines to indicate the flow of tasks. This visual approach to authoring of Learning Design has both strengths and weaknesses: in terms of strengths, it has provided a common visual language among LAMS users for rapid adoption and sharing of instructional strategies, and a useful framework for simple linear pedagogical approaches; in terms of weaknesses, the visual simplification necessarily limits the amount of information that can be conveyed about a complex instructional design, especially those designs not easily adapted to a linear format (eg, spiral pedagogies). This paper describes the assumptions behind the LAMS visual authoring environment at the levels of both educational theory and software design, together with a review of implementation experiences among educators, including experiences from the LAMS Community. The paper concludes with reflection on future directions for visualisation of Learning Design, particularly in the area of annotation and time-based visualisation.

In my paper, I discuss the results of individual observations of pupils aged 13-14. These children undertook an attempt to solve problems which were designed in order to bring about an inductive type of generalizing. The main aim of the study was to classify typical methods of proceeding, which represent the pupils’ ways of reasoning and to determine what influence a particular method of proceeding may have on the final outcome of their work. These results indicate the general pupils’ strategies of generalizing. Presumably, visual thinking produces a positive effect on the pupils’ process of generalizing and abilities to describe regularity with the aid of a letter symbol.

Machining process nowadays could not be conducted without its inseparable element: cutting edge and frequently numerically controlled milling machines. Milling and lathe machining centres comprise standard equipment in many companies of the machinery industry, e.g. automotive or aircraft. It is for that reason that tertiary education should account for this rising demand. This entails the introduction into the curricula the forms which enable visualisation of machining, milling process and virtual production as well as virtual machining centres simulation. Siemens Virtual Machine (Virtual Workshop) sets an example of such software, whose high functionality offers a range of learning experience, such as: learning the design of machine tools, their configuration, basic operation functions as well as basics of CNC.

One of the tasks of the project presented in this paper was to document, reconstruct in 3D, and visualize a collection of Neolithic pottery from the area of Lesser Poland. The digitization was performed using a structured-light scanner and, in two cases, photogrammetric software. The reconstructions were modelled on the basis of digital representations of scans of original fragments by adding successive layers of the reconstructed shape directly onto the recorded artefact. Apart from preparation of source files for sharing, a number of visualisations were made, including renders and 3D animations.

Opis:
Processing of digital experimental data has become a key part of virtually every research project. As sensors get both more diverse and cheaper, the amount of information to be handled greatly increases as well. Especially fatigue failure modelling requires by its nature large numbers of samples to be processed, and visualised. The presented paper is based on analysis of load data gathered in flight on an unmanned aircraft. A few versions of an analysis program were developed and considered for the use case. Each implementation included ingesting the data files, creating transfer arrays and the “rain flow counting” algorithm. For the sake of the ease of use and functionality, the version based on Python programming language was selected for presentation. Short development iteration time of this approach allowed gaining new insights by tweaking parameters to better represent actual acquired data. Both the results and the software itself can be easily viewed in a web browser and run with modifications without the need to install any software locally. The developed software is meant as a demonstration of capabilities of open source computation tools dedicated to aerospace and mechanical engineering research, where they remain relatively unpopular.

Popular belief about contemporary visual culture says that it is a space of either disinformation or communication chaos. Many humanities scholars are very critical about so called pictorial turn in culture, although the use of this term in this context is actually inappropriate, as pictorial turn was originally used to name the birth of visual studies as a separate academic field. The paper studies some other common misunderstandings about using images in scholarly communication and teaching and also presents some basic ideas how those may be overcome. The article presents the graphic designer's point of view, which seems to be supplementary, but in fact is needful in rapidly changing humanities.

The article presents technological and measurement systems and methods for substrate preparation, production and purification of raw biogas, biogas storage, cogeneration, and processing of post-fermentation mass. Based on the existing infrastructure for biogas production from pig slurry, a model system for integrating objects in the AVEVA environment using integration mechanisms was demonstrated. The simulation used an imaging method, and the 3D model was used for technological simulations. The work presents simulation results that allow us to understand the availability of graphic imaging techniques at each stage, define and expand the library of typical errors and requirements for pipeline installations, structures and devices, facilitating the identification of design errors and accelerated introduction of corrections to the installation design. The article features the use of integration of elements of a pilot biogas production installation in the AVEVA environment - innovative systems for heating the substrate and managing agricultural biogas production were implemented. A node for the production of raw biogas was indicated for the transport system of biogas produced in the fermentation tank, along with devices enabling the conduct, control and regulation of the fermentation process. The visualisation concerned integration of the biogas production technology diagram with the model environment for the created pipelines using integrator mechanisms.

Laser Particle Image Velocimetry is a modern method for visualisation of a velocity field, commonly used in fluid mechanics in order to describe the distribution of mass flows. Recently, this method has been applied to acoustic field visualisation, where the instantaneous particle velocity varies in terms of direction and vector orientation. The paper discusses utility of that approach in comparison to the full sound intensity description.A widely applied parameter describing the energy flow in an acoustic field is the intensity vector (formula (1)). In order to evaluate this parameter, there are needed measurements of the acoustic velocity and pressure to be taken. The evaluation of the parameter needs two basic measurements: acoustic velocity and pressure. In case of the lack of the direct pressure or velocity data, the output is a scalar value. The paper describes the distribution of velocity vectors in several subsequent phases (Fig. 1) and presents a mathematical formula (formula (11)) which provides possibility to obtain the main direction of the acoustic energy propagation. The data obtained from the laser system (Figs. 2 and 3) is compared with the hot-wire anemometry (Fig. 4 left) and the sound intensity distribution (Fig. 4 right).

Opis:
Convenient human-computer interaction is essential to carry out many exhausting and concentration-demanding activities. One of them is cyber-situational awareness as well as dynamic and static risk analysis. A specific design method for a multimodal human-computer interface (HCI) for cyber-security events visualisation control is presented. The main role of the interface is to support security analysts and network operators in their monitoring activities. The proposed method of designing HCIs is adapted from the methodology of robot control system design. Both kinds of systems act by acquiring information from the environment, and utilise it to drive the devices influencing the environment. In the case of robots the environment is purely physical, while in the case of HCIs it encompasses both the physical ambience and part of the cyber-space. The goal of the designed system is to efficiently support a human operator in the presentation of cyberspace events such as incidents or cyber-attacks. Especially manipulation of graphical information is necessary. As monitoring is a continuous and tiring activity, control of how the data is presented should be exerted in as natural and convenient way as possible. Hence two main visualisation control modalities have been assumed for testing: static and dynamic gesture commands and voice commands, treated as supplementary to the standard interaction. The presented multimodal interface is a component of the Operational Centre, which is a part of the National Cybersecurity Platform. Creation of the interface out of embodied agents proved to be very useful in the specification phase and facilitated the interface implementation.

Technological progress and changes in the lives of contemporary humans have led to a situation in which traditional forms of transferring information by means of text have become too slow, as it takes recipients more time to learn the content of such messages. Researchers emphasise that humans acquire graphic messages better than text. For this reason, presenting information in the form of infographics has become a popular method. The purpose of this article is to present the issue of infographics, including: definitions, types of infographics, and using infographics in different areas of life. An example of their wide use are social media. Based on this example, research was conducted using a searching technique, the purpose being to verify infographics in selected social media. The results of the research allow to acquire information about infographics in terms of popularity in a selected period, scope of topics in infographics and information about sectors and specialists who share infographics in social media most often.

Opis:
Altmetrics, as a new scientometric measure, shows the scholarly impact of a scientist and her/his social activity on social networking platforms. We analysed communication on ResearchGate within the group formed by Nicolaus Copernicus University different domains researchers. They share interest in information visualisation and form local collaboration team. We considered two compositions of research sample: the original team and the nearest collaborators. The common attributes of RG users such as coauthorship, skills set, topics, and ascribed domains were analysed. Based on these units, we carry out the sociographs to reveal social structure dynamics. Domain analysis was performed by the use of the PCA – the method which is able to extract the most essential factors from the variables set. The results indicate a good coincidence for these two approaches: collaboration between researchers and their skills development can significantly change their major. We strived to show that RG is a space of interdisciplinary training in building and identifying their own field research based on full text. Thus RG is a proper tool for crossdisciplinary qualitative analysis. Altmetrics and visualisation are mutually substituted and complemented devices, perceived as new tools for team science study. This requires, nevertheless, not only the use of appropriate tools, but also collecting a large dataset on global scientific activity within multidisciplinary groups.
