Opis:
Babica is one of the Subcarpathian villages from which, at the turn of the century, the first streams of migration to the United States began to flow. Emigration from this village rapidly became a common phenomenon. Krystyna Duda-Dziewierz, sociologist, decided to study the process. The research was conducted during the interwar period, and the results published in 1938 in a book entitled „The Malopolska village and the emigration to the U.S. A study of Babica village in Rzeszow Poviat1”. The study is one of the best papers describing the emigration of Polish rural people. Today, travel to the U.S. is still very popular and occupies an import ant place in the life of this community. A century of emigration in an almost unchanged direction owes its continuity to the dense social networks and migration chains which have developer since the first emigrants. The article compares the migration of contemporary Babica inhabitants to emigration from the beginning of the previous century

Amerykańska „rewolucja łupkowa” pozwoliła zaspokoić dużą część krajowego zapotrzebowania na gaz ziemny. Wydobycie surowca na wielką skalę stworzyło również szansę na jego eksport na rynki zagraniczne. Wiele państw wiąże z dostawami taniego gazu skroplonego (LNG) spore nadzieje, a w samych Stanach Zjednoczonych perspektywa ta wywołuje ożywioną debatę. W poniższej analizie autor przedstawia uwarunkowania infrastrukturalne związane z eksportem, jego wpływ na amerykańską gospodarkę oraz rynki zagraniczne. Analiza uwzględnia również potencjalnych konkurentów, z których na najpoważniejszego wyrasta Australia.
American shale gas revolution determined the US gas demand and consumption. The vast commercial gas production could strengthen the US export and influence the gas prices in the international markets. Some significant developments are expected in 2015-2018 and are connected with e.g. launching 9 export LNG terminals in US, increase of gas export capacity up to 89 billion m3 in Australia, or launching gas terminal in the Yamal Peninsula.

Aysheaia prolata, was described as the only lobopodian from the Drumian (Cambrian) Wheeler Formation in Utah, USA, and the sole representative of this genus besides the type species Aysheaia pedunculata, from the Cambrian (Stage 5) Stephen Formation, British Columbia. A redescription of Aysheaia prolata reveals previously overlooked morphological features, including segmental boundaries between putative lobopods, and curved terminal spines on the putative anterior end. These observations undermine lobopodian affinities of Aysheaia prolata, and instead we interpret this specimen as an isolated radiodontan frontal appendage. The presence of 11 podomeres, five of which possess elongate and anteriorly recurved ventral blades with auxiliary spines, together with shorter robust dorsal spines, identify the specimen as Stanleycaris. This represents the first report of Stanelycaris outside of the Cambrian Stage 5 thin Stephen Formation in British Columbia, expanding its palaeobiogeographic and stratigraphic range. Aysheaia is left as a monotypic genus endemic to the Burgess Shale. The Spence Shale luolishaniid Acinocrinus stichus is currently the only lobopodian known from the Cambrian of Utah.

In the first half of the 19th century the Kingdom of Hawaii was declared to be a part of the American sphere of influence. Americans and Europeans had a great influence on the country’s internal and foreign policy. They built their position on agriculture, in particular on the cultivation of sugar cane. Due to the lack of local manpower, they brought to Hawaii Asians – the Chinese, and then the Japanese. The Japanese government agreed to emigration of its laborers because of various reasons, including economic problems affecting rural areas. The conditions of their work and life were strictly regulated by the immigration convention concluded in 1886. In the years 1885–1894, 29,000 people came to work on plantations under the contract system. The proclamation of the Republic of Hawaii in 1894, which replaced the overthrown monarchy, coincided with the withdrawal of the government of this state from recruitment and importing workers from Japan. The resulting gap was filled in by Japanese emigre companies that brought not only contract workers but also non-contractual immigrants to Hawaii. The Government of the Republic of Hawaii considered the increased and uncontrolled inflow of the Japanese to be a threat. For this reason, it decided to limit this immigration. The refusal to let hundreds of Japanese enter Hawaii led to an immigration dispute between Tokyo and Honolulu. It contributed to the decision of the United States to annex Hawaii in 1897. Such a step evoked protests from Japan, yet, they were withdrawn at the end of the year, due to the growing competition of the powers in the Far East. The immigration dispute between Hawaii and Japan was finally resolved under the pressure from Washington in 1898, after the republic’s government paid out $75,000 compensation.

This article analyzes how cinematic and TV industries in the United States (“Hollywood” for short) attempted and managed to create a very specific stereotype of Basque immigrants, based on several elements from different sources such as the local stereotypes created in the places Basque immigrants had settled, based on their monopolistic relationship with sheepherding, the influence and misunderstandings derived from being Basque immigrant citizens from two European states (France and Spain) with strong, recognizable national stereotypes, and the mistaken identification that Hollywood has historically made between the Spanish and Latin Americans.

The issue of managing the late-Westphalian international environment, especially in the phase of a deep and accelerated qualitative transformation, is among one of the most intensely analyzed by the scientific community. Many models are considered by different scholars, ranging from imperial models to multi-level management models. One of the forms of managing international relations and a tool of power projection can be the form called a hyperpower. It is a unique subjective structure including a core in the form of a superpower and a network of connections and decision-making chains – formal as well as informal – functioning in the transnational social space. This system is situated as an intermediate form between empire and hegemony. It is distinguished from the former by flexibility and softness, from the latter – by international legitimacy that goes beyond the mere recognition of effectiveness in managing global affairs. Its functioning can be traced on the example of three most important functions: sanction, indoctrination, and legitimization.

Global trade and intercontinental tourism are on the rise in today’s world. This, in turn, leads to more cross-border law suits. Inevitably, jurisdictions will be confronted with legal concepts that are unknown in the host forum. This contribution investigates whether, and to what extent, punitive damages judgments originating in the United States can be enforced against the assets of a defendant in a number of selected Member States of the EU. More specifically, the article explores the possibilities of enforcing American punitive damages judgments in five EU countries, namely Germany, Italy, Spain, France and England. This comparative analysis reveals that the case law in these selected countries is relatively divergent as to the stance adopted towards foreign punitive damages, resulting in different degrees of acceptance of this legal remedy.

The purpose of this article is to discuss the ongoing trade conflict between the United States and the People’s Republic of China during the coronavirus crisis. The COVID-19 pandemic, which has been going on for more than 10 months, and its effects have become another subject of dispute between both powers. In particular, the economic and trade agreement concluded in February this year between the US and the PRC will be analyzed. The basic question underlying the analysis relates to what will be the consequences of the signed declaration: can unexpected returns be expected? What happens at the next lockdown? Is the agreement meant to overshadow the ongoing struggle for global hegemony? In addition, the consequences of the Sino-US trade war for the international supply chain and the world economy during the coronavirus must also be considered. Systemic changes taking place in the world economy, accelerated by the prevailing SARS-CoV-2 virus, will also be described. The considerations will be based on the search for a new paradigm for the operation of the international economic system. So far, the focus has been on minimizing production costs. Today, one must also take into account other elements that were forced by the prevailing epidemic, including security of supply of goods. The topic is important because its issues are topical and very dynamic. Therefore, it is also worth examining and taking a closer look at the phenomenon that has dominated and blocked today’s world.

The article discusses the image of the United States depicted in Czesław Miłosz’s correspondence coming from the years 1945-1950. The author of the article refers to the circumstances that led the poet to taking up a job as a diplomat and analyses a variety of opinions on that decision circulating among both Polish and émigré writers. The letters discussed reflect the culture shock and the slow process of acclimatization that the poet went through; his way of perceiving and trying to understand America. The article also focuses on the role Miłosz played as a mediator  between the Old and the New Worlds, translating American literature into Polish and trying to popularize Polish culture in the US.

The article presents sanctions as an instrument in the United States policy to Iran. Washington accuses Iran for sponsoring terrorism and developing intensively its nuclear program. Since 2006 sanctions have been imposed by the United Nation’s Security Council and additionally and the European Union has imposed embargo on buying Iran’s oil. Each of these imposed sanctions regimes against Iran do not bring to a desirable change in Iran’s policy. The article focuses on the problem of sanctions effectiveness, especially in the situation in which not all states agree in imposing hard sanctions and Iran is strongly determined in further developing its nuclear program despite of costs and condemnation and further sanctions.
W artykule omówiono sankcje jako instrument wykorzystywany w polityce USA wobec Iranu. Zarzutami podnoszonymi przez USA wobec Iranu jest wspieranie terroryzmu oraz intensywnie rozwijany program atomowy. Po roku 2006 sankcje zostały nałożone także przez Radę Bezpieczeństwa ONZ oraz embargo UE na zakup irańskiej ropy. Kolejne reżimy sankcji nie doprowadziły ani do zmiany polityki Iranu, ani do zmian politycznych w tym państwie. Ukazano problem skuteczności sankcji, zwłaszcza gdy nie wszystkie państwa godzą się na ich zaostrzenie a władze Iranu są zdeterminowane w dalszym rozwijaniu programu atomowego bez względu na koszty, potępienie i kolejne sankcje.

The main aim of the article is an analysis of migration streams flowing from Babica to the United States in the context of the social topography of the village. Babica is a village located in the south-eastern Poland, in the Province of Podkarpacie. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth century emigration from this countryside became very popular phenomenon. During the Interwar Period, the research on emigration from this region was conducted by the sociologist Krystyna Duda-Dziewierz. As a major issue, she analyzed an influence of emigration on the social organization of a local community. One of the most important factor, which affected emigration from this village, was the social topography of Babica. Therefore, the analysis conducted in this article refers mainly to the impact of the social topography of the village on the migration process.
