Opis:
Population movement is an important factor in the socio-economic development of a country and its individual regions. Its geographical characteristics make it possible to identify, as quickly as possible, areas of depopulation and those where population flows clearly increase local and regional resources. In stable conditions, this provides an opportunity for a well-considered migration policy; in emergency situations, this becomes very difficult. The problems of contemporary migration geography in Ukraine are particularly relevant and painful in the context of Russia’s military attack and invasion of the territory of sovereign Ukraine in 2014 and a full-scale war since 24 February 2022. The aim of this article is to attempt to characterize migration in Ukraine, outlining the causes, directions, scale, intensity and dynamics of the processes over as broad a time horizon as possible, with a focus on the two sub-periods 2007–2013 and 2014–2021. Data for 2014–2021 are presented without taking into account the temporarily occupied territory of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, the city of Sevastopol and part of the temporarily occupied territories in the Luhansk and Donetsk regions, as these data are not available. According to the study, the number of migrants who crossed the state border of Ukraine only after Russia launched a full-scale war against Ukraine (UN data as of 15.11.2022) amounted to 15.3 million people, of whom 7.6 million remained abroad.

Poland is a country with a long history of emigration, but today it has a new identity as a ‘country of immigration’. The article presents findings from my research in 2019 among 26 Ukrainians and six other foreigners working in Płock. It analyses the reasons why they came particularly to Płock rather than to another city, and also why they have remained there, or – in the case of the Ukrainians – return several times to Płock, rather than seeking work in other cities.

F or a period of three weeks (1–22 November 1918), Lviv was a divided city. In their attempt to conquer it, the Ukrainians faced spontaneous opposition from its residents. The Jews, who were the second largest group of residents after the Poles, formed their own militia and announced neutrality. However, they did not follow this announcement, and the militia actively cooperated with the Ukrainian army. After the Ukrainians had been forced by the defendants out of Lviv and voluntary units had arrived from Cracow, the city fell into criminal riots which cost the lives of 44 people (33 Jews and 11 Christians), and 443 people were wounded. The official data were established by the Extraordinary Government Investigation Committee chaired by Judge Zygmunt Rymowicz. The riots lasted several days (22–24 November 1918). The delayed reaction of the Polish military authorities exacerbated the disturbances. The author proves that in terms of the natio - nality (religion) of the victims, the riots were of a criminal nature.

Artykuł przybliża zagadnienie antropologicznych badań nad diasporą i pamięcią (sytuując się na pograniczu diaspora studies i memory studies). Przedmi otem uwagi jest diaspora ukraińska w kanadyjskim Toronto, a szczególnie ta jej część, którą stanowią Ukraińcy urodzeni w Polsce, przybyli do Kanady w latach 80.
The paper presents anthropological research on the issue of diaspora and memory, placing itself on the border between diaspora studies and memory studies. The subject of concern is the Ukrainian diaspora in Toronto, Canada, particularly the group of Ukrainians who were born in Poland and who immigrated to Canada in the 1980s. Based on ethnographic data collected in the years 2014–2016, the author shows the relationship between memory and migration, and points to its complexity. The data shows that memory differentiates the community of Ukrainians from Poland from the other groups forming the Ukrainian diaspora in Canada.

The aim of this article was to make an attempt to outline the perception of the acculturation process of Ukrainian children in Polish schools in their parents. Applying Berry's theory of acculturation, it was demonstrated that the systemic solutions concerning the education of children of a national minority in public institutions are rooted in the classical model of assimilation. The attitudes of the children’s parents who came to Poland for work or to escape war also indicate a desire to assimilate their children in the school environment as soon as possible, and at the same time to separate them in the home environment or in the group of compatriots.

The article briefly reviews the representatives of the Ukrainian community in Poland with an emphasis on the post-war period, when many Ukrainians ended up in a neighboring state due to the Second World War, and especially due to the deportation of a part of Ukrainians from their ethnic lands caused by the Operation Vistula. The author shows, Ukrainians in Poland did not undergo complete assimilation, on the contrary, Ukrainians have preserved their national identity. Figures who, thanks to their actions and works, contributed to the unification of Ukrainians, contributed to the unification of Ukrainians, the preservation of the Ukrainian language, education, culture, and traditions, can be considered prominent representatives of the Ukrainian people, and therefore should be the focus of attention of specialists in encyclopedia practice and biography studies. The state of academic studies of Ukrainian figures in Poland is outlined as well. The article content is presented by the chronological principle. The author also resorts to grouping personalities according to their social and political activities, belonging to this or that society or other Ukrainian minority groups.

Phenomenon of migration is present in modern world among every society. People are relocating due to career goals, educational opportunities or to settle down in better place to live. It is caused by their country’s economic situation, military conflict or individual reasons. In recent times number of Ukrainian students migrating to Poland has become arguable topic among media and academic societies. The purpose of the studies was to define attitude of Polish students to Ukrainization of universities and to ascertain the most common stereotypes od Ukrainian students. In order to measure variables the authors self-designed questionnaire including 5 Likert scale and semantic differential scale was used. The study included 100 students of different Cracow universities. Results of study has shown that polish students attitude to students from Ukraine is mostly positive, but there are deeply ingrained stereotypes about this social group

Opis:
The Ukrainian community in Poland has actively participated in the process of Polish- Ukrainian dialogue and reconciliation. Tragically experienced due to the Polish-Ukrainian conflict during the Second World War and displacement to the Soviet Ukraine and within the “Vistula” Action, the majority of the community’s members understood that if they want to live in harmony with Polish neighbours, they should join the Polish-Ukrainian historical dialogue. Hence the initiatives and gestures of reconciliation, supporting the actions of the Polish and Ukrainian authorities in this direction and the hierarchies of churches in Poland and Ukraine. This dialogue, however, encountered resistance from Polish and Ukrainian nationalist circles, who blame the other side for the harm they suffered.

The paper is a report from anthropological fieldwork research carried out in Canada between March and September of 2014. My aim was to recognize the shape and content of social and cultural memory of Ukrainian Canadians, born in Poland, who emigrated to Canada in 1980s. They live in Edmonton and Toronto among other members of Ukrainian diaspora: descendants of Alberta pioneers, interwar period immigrants, displaced persons, Ukrainians from Ukraine and former Yugoslavia. Their memories concerning local Ukrainian history in Poland encounters institutionalized, well designed project of Ukrainian cultural memory in Canada. Actual situation in Ukraine (Euromaydan, Crimea annexation, civil war in the Donbas region) updates the memory and identity questions of Ukrainian diaspora in Canada in general and makes answers even more complicated for the Ukrainians born in Poland.

The focus of the present research is to examine what Polish university students associate with their Eastern neighbours - Russians and Ukrainians. The predominantly negative historical experience of Poland with those two nations, especially with the Russians, constitutes the background for a rather negative attitude towards both of them. However, the recent political changes in the Eastern European region, especially the revolution in Ukraine starting in 2013 and subsequently the Russian-Ukrainian crisis have the potential to change the light in which Poles are viewing their neighbours. Previous research has already suggested that after the aforementioned events the general attitude of Polish people towards the Ukrainians has become more positive, while towards Russians it is increasingly negative. In order to analyse the contemporary image of Russians and Ukrainians, a survey with 150 Polish university students was conducted. The results of the research show that both nations are predominantly associated with the current socio-political situation rather than with history, culture, language, tradition or other topics. While Russia and Russians are mostly associated with the current political situation and key persons, the Ukraine is linked to the socio-political changes in the state taking place during the research.

Opis:
This article looks at the mobility of highly skilled female migrants from the perspective of the post-socialist semi-peripheral countries in Eastern Europe. It analyses chosen aspects of the biographical experiences of highly skilled women from three post-USSR republics bordering the European Union – namely Ukraine, Belarus, and Russia – in Poland, a post-socialist country itself but also an EU member-state. The empirical analysis focuses on their lifestyle changes and choices, made through the experience of living in a new, though quite familiar Polish culture, which is both more emancipated (Western) while, at the same time, pertaining to some of the familiar (Eastern) patterns. Due to this liminal nature of the host country, the adaptation process of migrants is easier and comes at a lower biographical cost. In the analysis, I explore two notions: the gender roles renegotiation and the changes in the women’s approach towards the external manifestations of femininity, which I contrast with their reflections of the changes undergone. As for the gender role renegotiation, three main approaches were described varying by the degree to which the old, familiar patterns are maintained. In terms of the external notions of femininity, while taking care of one’s looks is still an observable element of the migrants’ identity, they do take advantage of the wider spectrum of options available in the host society, and try to blend in with the casual big-city crowd. The article was written on the basis of empirical material in the form of twenty in-depth, unstructured interviews, which were confronted with the selected subject literature.

The purpose of this article was to answer the question whether and how the legal status, and in particular its increase, influences the economic and professional adaptation of immigrants with different ethnic backgrounds. The analysis was of a qualitative nature and was based on in-depth interviews with Ukrainian and Vietnamese immigrants having different legal statuses. Contrary to the assumed hypothesis, it turned out that the increase of the legal status of the studied immigrants from Ukraine and Vietnam, meaning that they achieve more secure legal status – giving them wider scope of rights and a growing sense of security and stability – rarely contributed to a significant improvement of their economic and professional position. Meanwhile, there could be observed differences between these two groups in terms of patterns of adaptation in the Polish economy, which were influenced by the legal framework, but also by other important factors, such as, in particular, the availability of income-bringing activities and social networks.

Throughout its history, Ukraine has been both a country of origin andtrans it or destination for migrants. Ukraine has always been actively involved in the migration processes of Europe and the world. Poland has always attracted Ukrainians because of its territorial proximity, minor language barrier and higher salaries. After 2014, Poland became the most popular destination among Ukrainian workers. The significant increase in the number of migrants from Ukraine is due not only to economic reasons but also to the military conflict in Eastern Ukraine which had an impact on the geography of migration flows, gender composition etc. At the same time, Poland experienced a shortage of workers amid successful economic development and record low unemployment. The situation connected with the spread of the virus, the pandemic, and the closure of borders have significantly affected the economic situation in the world, migration flows, migration policy etc. However, it is difficult to predict migration flows after the end of quarantine, but it is clear that the EU member states will primarily need seasonal workers from Eastern European countries (including Ukraine). As Poland will also need additional labour forces, it can be argued that it will consolidate its position as the leading destination for Ukrainian labour migrants.

The topic of Ukrainian-Russian relations is very important in the alternative history novels of the Ukrainian writer Vasily Kożeljanko (1957-2008). Alternative histories novels "Parade in Moscow" (1997), "Kotigoroško" (2000), "Terorium" (2001), "FalseNostradamus" (2001) novels appeared in an independent Ukraine when there was no longer a Soviet censorship. In alternative historical prose, heroes can be embedded in the history of an active person or as fictional characters who carry the ethno-stereotypical lines of their community and have ethno-stereotypes about other peoples. Ethnic stereotypes of Ukrainians and Russians and stereotypes of Ukraina and Russia can be mythologised. Relations between a stronger and weaker, older and younger, colonizing country and colonized country are presented as a conflict between Strong Russia and a weak Ukraine, but also a strong Ukraine of weak Russia. Russian Empire in the of Kożeljankos alternative histories novels presented negatively.

Opis:
The purpose of this article is to compare the perceived destination image of Poland as seen by Russians and Ukrainians. This study contributes to understanding the process of how the image of a destination is shaped, the new contribution being the comparison of the image of Poland as perceived by visitors and non-visitors of two nations, which until 1991 were a part of one state. The study is based on a questionnaire consisting of 16 statements on the perceived destination image of Poland. A 5-point Likert scale was used in the survey. A total of 710 people were examined, including 348 Russians and 362 Ukrainians. The reliability of the survey was assessed using Cronbach's alpha index. The hypotheses verification, using Student's t-test, showed that Russians and Ukrainians perceived Poland as an attractive country in terms of tourism. No major diferences between Russians and Ukrainians were observed in the perception of Poland as a tourist destination. Moreover, no influence of past experience was noted on the shaping of the perceived destination image of Poland. Additionally, some managerial implications of significant relevance to destination marketing are discussed, and future directions for research are outlined.
