This paper presents a qualitative analysis of women’s experiences of call to Christian pastoral ministry as a second career—a mid-life turning point. Drawing on 44 semi-structured interviews with pastors of different denominations, I look at women’s stories of call through the lens of interpretive theory to analyze how women create meanings around this life altering event, and how they construct past experiences in light of these decisions. I employ George Herbert Mead’s theory of time to analyze how women afford prior secular work experiences sacred meaning in light of their subsequent “pastoral call” experience. This paper attempts to arrive at a better understanding of women’s experience of entering pastoral ministry, as well as their past and future life trajectories.

This article aims to answer the question of the biographical meaning of the pandemic in the experiences of so-called “essential workers” who performed their duties in the first line of struggle with the consequences of the COVID-19 health crisis. The analysis of workers’ experiences helps us contribute to the ongoing debates on the role of macro-level events in autobiographical storytelling and the discussion on biographical turning points in sociology. The empirical analysis is based on a collection of more than 80 biographical narrative interviews in healthcare, social care, education, and logistics, from which we selected two stories of the pivotal significance of the pandemic crisis for biographical change for analysis. Biographical analysis makes it possible to describe which conditions are conducive to the inclusion of the pandemic in the main biographical story as a turning point.

This paper aims to analyze the relevance given to violent deaths and imprisonment by male homicide perpetrators in their biographical reconstructions. Drawing on narrative criminology, this study examines the offenders’ emic terms, rationalities, and stories. The analysis is based on seventy-three purposefully selected narrative-biographical interviews and field observations in prisons and homes of former convicts (2016-2020) in Metropolitan Buenos Aires, Argentina. The corpus was analyzed following an inductive thematic coding strategy using ATLAS.ti. Three central narratives about homicide and incarceration emerged: “opportunity,” “rock bottom,” and “disruptive.” For most, homicide was described as a biographical opportunity to rethink their lives, pursue new pathways, and “stabilize” a previously uncontrolled lifestyle. However, homicides perpetrated by respondents with higher socioeconomic status were disruptive events. Participants used stoic rationality—the positive appraisal of painful experiences—to structure their sense-making and stories of violence. This rationality permeated perpetrators’ presentations of themselves, their turning points and lived experiences, and the violence performed and suffered. This paper grapples with the widespread assumption that homicide is a radical change in the lives of offenders and questions the universal meaning of violent death. Performing violence is not only neutralized but is also seen as an expected and inaugural event in life stories, dependent on the worldviews of the social actors.

The main goal of this paper was to check usefulness of introducing measures of the financial markets risk into multivariate forecasting and business cycle dating models to improve their predictive and turning points detection power. Realised volatility was selected as market risk synthetic measure and introduced into two recession dating algorithms: Harding & Pagan (2002) mechanical procedure and Markov Switching Dynamic Factor Model (MS-DFM) with mixed frequencies and missing data handling. In the theoretical part of the article mathematical background of the realised volatility concept and MS-DFM model were presented. It was also described how the output of the MS-DFM model can be used to date turning points. This approach to local maxima detection was compared with Harding and Pagan competitor algorithm. In the practical part of the paper recession detection improvements stemming from introduction of realised volatility measures into MS-DFM model/Harding & Pagan procedure were examined for US and four Western Europe countries (Germany, France, United Kingdom and Italy) in the time span of 20 years between 1990 and 2010.

This paper presents the preliminary analysis of the characteristics of cyclical fluctuations in the freight transport market in Poland. The aim of the analysis is to identify, based on the estimated turning points (using the Bry Boschan method, as well as Hidden Markov Models), expansion and contraction phases in freight transport. These results are compared with the business climate indicators calculated on the basis of survey research in the freight transport.

Badania koniunktury w transporcie samochodowym prowadzone są w Instytucie Transportu Samochodowego od 1997 r. Podobnie jak badania innych ośrodków (Główny Urząd Statystyczny, Szkoła Główna Handlowa, Uniwersytet Ekonomiczny w Poznaniu, GFK Polonia i in.) prowadzone są metodą testu. Analizy bazują na danych pozyskiwanych z ankiet rozsyłanych w odstępach kwartalnych do przedsiębiorstw realizujących krajowe i międzynarodowe przewozy ładunków. Wyniki dostarczają informacji o bieżącej, jak i prognozowanej sytuacji firm transportowych, w tym o rodzajach barier utrudniających funkcjonowanie przedsiębiorstw. W pracy podjęto próbę odpowiedzi na pytanie, czy wyniki badań sektora transportowego są pomocne przy konstrukcji wyprzedzającego, ewentualnie równoczesnego, wskaźnika koniunktury dla gospodarki Polski.
This paper provides some results of business survey in road freight transport in Poland. These studies, conducted since 1997 at Motor Transport Institute, base on quarterly data obtained from questionnaires distributed among selected national and international transport firms. The results provide information about the current and projected situation of transport companies, especially about the barriers which limit the development and efficiency of transport companies. This paper attempts to answer the question of whether the results of the transport sector are useful in the construction of leading or at least simultaneous climate indicator for Polish economy.

As the Russian economy is presently characterized by high uncertainty of doing business and a growing gap between opinions and actions of firms and decision makers, the importance of qualitative business surveys as a source of information is significantly rising. The paper investigates the ability of Russian business tendency surveys to identify business cycle turning points. For this purpose we have constructed an algorithm to build economic indicators which cover all information contained in the sectoral business surveys data. Identification of the turning points of these indicators allows us to track the stylized ‘averaged’ chronology of the business cycle. In addition, we have evaluated ex post the turning points in the GDP growth on the basis of the extracted cyclical component of the composite Economic Sentiment Indicator.

Regularne zmiany w długim okresie obserwowane w zjawiskach gospodarczych występują również w zjawiskach demograficznych. Celem artykułu jest identyfikacja i pomiar wahań cyklicznych zmiennych charakteryzujących płodność kobiet w Polsce, a następnie przeprowadzenie analizy zmian płodności dla okresów wyodrębnionych jako punkty zwrotne. Wahania cykliczne identyfikowano i mierzono, korzystając z dorobku metodologicznego badaczy koniunktury gospodarczej, modyfikując go do potrzeb własnych badań. Określono punkty zwrotne, fazy wahań, ich długości i amplitudy. Stwierdzono, że w jednoimiennych punktach zwrotnych oraz w fazach spadku na zmniejszenie się wartości ogólnego współczynnika płodności miały wpływ zmiany wzorca płodności, natomiast w fazie wzrostu zmiany w strukturze populacji kobiet w wieku zdolności rozrodczej przyczyniły się do wzrostu ogólnej płodności.
Regular changes over long periods observed in economy also occur in demographic phenomena. The paper aims to determine and measure cyclical fluctuations in variables relating to women’s fertility in Poland, and subsequently to conduct an analysis of changes in such fertility in periods identified as turning points. The cyclical fluctuations were identified and measured by applying methods used by researchers of the economic situation, after an appropriate adaptation. Turning points, fluctuation phases, lengths and amplitude were established. It was found that at single-name turning points and during drop phases the decrease in the general fertility rate was affected by changes in the fertility pattern, while during the growth phase, changes in the structure of the population of women of child-bearing age contributed to an increase in general fertility.

The economic activity indicators in Poland during the years 1995-2011 exhibit various cyclical patterns. Employing the Christiano – Fitzgerald band-pass filter and unobserved components model it is shown that the cyclical processes of Polish economic activity are driven by overlapping higher frequency fluctuations (3-4 years) and longer cycles of 8.5 years. The cyclical fluctuations of construction, transportation and trade are dissimilar to gross value added. Economic activity in transportation leads and in construction lags the fluctuations of gross value added. Cyclical fluctuations of gross value added seem to be determined by industry and construction. Manufacturing, especially capital and intermediate goods fluctuations are responsible for the variation of industry. The production of non-durable consumer goods, energy and production of electric power are relatively the most desynchronized compared to industry. Production of electric power leads industrial production. Capital goods, intermediate goods and energy cycle phases are asymmetric – the slowdown lasts shorter and has higher amplitude compared to expansion.
