Opis:
The aim of this article is to examine the renderings of lexical items essential for the structure and the content of Tokarczuk’s ‘Bieguni’, i.e. podróż, and ruch, in the English translation performed by Jennifer Croft. Since we believe that both a wide-angle lens and a microscope are needed to view the composition properly, we offer both a qualitative and quantitative analysis of the terms in question. In particular, 78 instances of the use of podróż, and 80 instances of the use of ruch are subject to the scrupulous comparative analyses when it comes to their translated equivalents, providing an in-depth description of their context-embedded textual meanings, and an attempt to demonstrate that some of the translator’s choices befit the characteristics of explicitation.

In 2018, the third opera composition by Aleksander Nowak (*1979), ahat ilī – Sister of Gods had its premiere., The libretto was created by Polish Nobel Prize winner Olga Tokarczuk, on the basis of her own novel. This kind of combination of literature and opera, reinforced by the unique situation in which the author of the text-inspiration and the libretto is the same person, suggests that the work should be defined as a literary opera. The aim of the article is to present the composition in terms of its genres as well as to show the unique path of its content from literary work to operatic, together with the analysis of the libretto from the librettological perspective.

Aleksander Nowak’s (*1979) third opera, ahat ilī – Sister of Gods, premiered in 2018, sets a libretto by Polish Nobel Prize winner Olga Tokarczuk, based on her own novel. This marriage of literature and opera, reinforced by the unique situation in which the author of the text which served as an inspiration and of the libretto is one and the same person, suggests that the work could be defined as a Literaturoper. My paper aims to analyse this composition in terms of genre as well as to represent the unique path of its content’s transformation from a literary into an operatic work, along with an analysis of the verbal component presented from the librettological perspective.

W artykule omówiono zajęcia języka polskiego jako obcego (JPJO), których uczestnikami byli humaniści: studenci zagraniczni Wydziału Filologicznego Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego. W opisie zdarzeń edukacyjnych zastosowano metodę introspekcji nauczycielskiej oraz studium dwóch przypadków zdarzeń glottodydaktycznych. Celem artykułu jest ukazanie warsztatu pracy glottodydaktyka praktyka wprowadzającego treści literackie do zajęć JPJO, jak też powiązanie zastosowanych form pracy z teoriami odnoszącymi się do kulturowego nauczania języków obcych. Bezpośrednią inspiracją omówionych zajęć były wykłady z poetyki, które wygłosiła pisarka Olga Tokarczuk wiosną 1918 r. na Wydziale Filologicznym UŁ. W części pierwszej artykułu opisane praktyki dydaktyczne odniesiono do literatury metodycznej. Zwrócono uwagę na konieczność podjęcia przez nauczyciela decyzji o wyborze podejścia implikującego pracę z tekstem (estetycznego, pragmatycznego lub strategicznego) oraz określonej postawy wobec tekstu (zgodnej z modelem obiektywnym, interaktywnym lub subiektywnym). W części drugiej omówiono przebieg dwóch zajęć dydaktycznych. Podczas zajęć nr 1 uczący się rozwijali kompetencje w zakresie rozumienia, analizy językowej i przetwarzania tekstu bazowego będącego połączeniem dwóch gatunków: sprawozdania i sylwetki. W czasie zajęć nr 2 podejmowali działania w zakresie interpretacji i analizy językowej opowiadania Olgi Tokarczuk Szafa. Omówiono zadania wykonywane przez uczących się oraz przestawiono i oceniono wybrane efekty pracy uczniów. W podsumowującej części trzeciej artykułu zaprezentowano procedurę wprowadzania treści literackich do nauczania JPJO, wyodrębniając w niej fazę wstępną, polegającą na wzbudzeniu zainteresowania twórcą, fazę drugą, skupiającą się na tworzeniu portretu twórcy i/lub sprawozdania z jego udziałem oraz fazę trzecią, docelową, w której proponuje się uczącym wgląd w tekst oryginalny twórcy. Zaakcentowano konieczność jednoczesnego rozwijania podczas tego rodzaju zajęć działań komunikacyjnych, mediacyjnych oraz kompetencji kulturowych i akademickich. Uznano, że w prowadzeniu zajęć wykorzystujących utwory literackie w grupach o profilu humanistycznym najlepiej sprawdza się podejście dyskursywne, umożliwiające wgląd w tekst z wielu perspektyw oraz przetwarzanie go.
The article discusses Polish as a foreign language (PFL) classes using the method of teacher introspection and a study of two cases of didactic events. Their participants were humanists: foreign students of the Faculty of Philology at the University of Lodz The aim of the article is to present the work technique of a foreign language practitioner introducing literary content into PFL classes, as well as linking the applied forms of work with theories relating to the cultural teaching of foreign languages. The lectures on poetics delivered by the writer Olga Tokarczuk in the spring of 2018 at the Faculty of Philology of the University of Lodz were the direct inspiration for the discussed classes. In the first part of the article, the didactic practices described were referred to the methodological literature. Attention was drawn to the necessity for the teacher to make a decision about the choice of an approach that implies working with the text (aesthetic, pragmatic or strategic approaches) and a specific attitude towards the text (in line with the objective, interactive or subjective model). The second part discusses the course of two classes. During class 1, the learners developed their competences in the field of comprehension, linguistic analysis and base text processing, which was a combination of two genres: report and profile. During class 2, they undertook activities in the field of interpretation and linguistic analysis of Olga Tokarczuk’s short story. The tasks performed by learners were discussed and selected effects of students’ work were presented and assessed. The concluding third part of the article presents the procedure of introducing literary content into teaching PFL, distinguishing the introductory phase consisting of stimulating interest in the creator, the second phase focusing on creating a portrait of the author and / or a report including such a portrait, and the third, target phase, in which learners are offered access to the original text. The need for simultaneous development the communication and mediation activities as well as the cultural and academic competences during this type of classes was emphasized. It was found that the best strategy in conducting classes using literary works in groups with a humanistic profile, is a discursive approach , allowing for insight into the text from many perspectives and processing it.

W artykule opisano przebieg zdarzenia czytelniczego z udziałem studentów zagranicznych kierunków humanistycznych, uczących się języka polskiego (jpjo) na Wydziale Filologicznym Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego w roku akademickim 2019/2020. Niniejsze studium jest próbą wglądu w glottodydaktyczny proces czytania opowiadania Olgi Tokarczuk Profesor Andrews w Warszawie. Walory glottodydaktyczne opowiadania zostały omówione, z zastosowaniem perspektywy nauczycielskiej, w części drugiej pracy. Zwrócono uwagę na wielowymiarowość tekstu i związane z tym możliwości odkrywania przez uczących się jego warstw znaczeniowych i kulturowych (w tym: lingwakulturowych). Odniesiono się następnie do prac badawczych, w których omawiano stosowanie podejścia interkulturowego w nauczaniu języków obcych i jpjo oraz tych, w których przeprowadzano analizy języka/lingwakultury PRL-u. Tematyka ta jest silnie powiązana z sytuacją tytułowego bohatera opowiadania i czasoprzestrzenią utworu (bezradny cudzoziemiec w Warszawie, PRL, początkowe dni stanu wojennego). W trzeciej, kluczowej części artykułu, omówiono proces czytania tekstu przez grupę studencką. Był to proces częściowo sterowany – lektorka opracowała siedmiopunktowy szablon czytelniczy, ukierunkowujący lekturę tekstu. Zadaniem studentów było wypełnienie tego kwestionariusza po samodzielnym przeczytaniu opowiadania. W poszczególnych punktach szablonu wymagano od czytających zrelacjonowania najważniejszych treści opowiadania oraz sformułowania wypowiedzi o charakterze refleksyjnym i oceniającym. Wypowiedzi pisemne zawarte w szablonach czytelniczych studentów zostały szczegółowe omówione. Analiza koncentrowała się na: odkrywaniu przez czytających warstw znaczeniowych, interkulturowych i lingwakulturowych tekstu, sposobach relacjonowania trudności, jakie czytelnicy napotkali podczas lektury oraz na komentarzach, w których formułowali opinie na temat lektury oraz oceniali własny trud czytelniczy. W podsumowaniu wyciągnięto dodatkowo wnioski na temat zastosowanych przez studentów strategii czytania tekstu oraz typów mediacji. Wyodrębniono także, na podstawie doświadczeń bohatera utworu Olgi Tokarczuk, zestaw strategii przetrwania cudzoziemców w obcym środowisku.
The article describes the course of a reading event with the participation of students of humanities studying Polish as a foreign language (PFL) at the Faculty of Philology of the University of Lodz in the academic year 2019/2020. This study is an attempt to gain insight into the glottodidactic process of reading Olga Tokarczuk’s story Professor Andrews in Warsaw. The glottodidactic values of the story were discussed, from a teacher’s perspective, in the second part of the work. Attention was paid to the multidimensionality of the text and the related opportunities for learners to discover layers of meaning and culture (including linguaculture layers). Reference was then made to research works that discussed the use of the intercultural approach in teaching foreign languages and PFL, as well as those that analyzed the language/linguaculture of the Polish People’s Republic. These topics are strongly related to the situation of the title character of the story and the space-time of the work (a helpless foreigner in Warsaw, the Polish People’s Republic, the initial days of martial law). The third, key part of the article, discusses the process of reading the text by a group of students. It was a partially guided process – the teacher developed a seven-point reading template that directed the reading of the text. The students’ task was to complete this questionnaire after reading the story on their own. At individual points in the template, readers were required to report the most important content of the story and to formulate reflective and evaluative statements. The written statements included in the students’ reading templates were discussed in detail. The analysis focused on: readers’ discovery of the text’s meaning, intercultural and linguistic layers, ways of reporting the difficulties readers encountered while reading, and comments in which they formulated opinions on the reading and assessed their own reading effort. The summary also draws conclusions about the text reading strategies used by students and the types of mediation. A set of survival strategies for foreigners in a foreign environment was also identified, based on the experiences of the hero of Olga Tokarczuk’s work.

From the beginning of his service in the Przemyśl Diocese, bishop Ignacy Tokarczuk performed his pastoral activities with great vigor and dedication and was, therefore, the most important “object” of the operational work of the PRL’s Security Service (a Polish acronym: SB) in the south-east of Poland. The Security Service undertook number of operational activities against him. He was surrounded by an organized network of secret the security’s collaborators that informed about the bishop’s plans and deeds and realized some operational tasks. By means of disintegration and disinformation activities, the security tried to damage his reputation in the society and in the church circles as well as limit his pastoral activity. Despite great efforts, huge expenses and involvement of many people in this process, the security managed neither to intimidate nor to destroy the bishop.
Od samego początku swojej posługi w diecezji przemyskiej bp I. Tokarczuk ze względu na rozmach podejmowanych działań pasterskich był najważniejszym „obiektem” pracy operacyjnej Służby Bezpieczeństwa PRL w południowo-wschodniej Polsce. Podejmowano wobec niego cały szereg działań. Organizowano wokół niego sieć tajnych współpracowników SB, którzy na bieżąco informowali o planach i poczynaniach biskupa oraz realizowali określone przez bezpiekę zadania. Poprzez działania dezintegracyjne i dezinformacyjne starały się zniszczyć mu autorytet w społeczeństwie i kręgach kościelnych oraz ograniczyć jego działalność pasterską. Mimo wielkiego wysiłku, nakładu środków i ludzi nie udało się go zastraszyć czy zniszczyć.

In the paper we make an attempt to read out the post-phenomenology of Henri Maldiney in the novel Bieguni. Maldiney’s post-phenomenology is not treated as a doctrine, but an action and an activity made against the elements of psychoanalysis and postmodernism. The world depicted in Bieguni is one in which we can observe continuous movement and compulsion. The border between the entity and the world they are living in has been erased. It is the world in which a man has to choose his identity. “Being on one’s way” opens a person to new experiences and inspires him/her to some creative actions. Neither the nomadic thinking nor the format of writing are growing; not in some determined theoretical place, and not either in some well-defined writing style. The identity of the individual seems to be set, and formed only by his self-understanding. Tokarczuk’s Bieguni is becoming part of an important discourse on the literature of the 21st century. It is not necessary to consider narrations only in the aesthetic context, which is cleaning the world up, but as the act of mind turning life into art. Every man is a wanderer travelling not only in the physical but also cultural dimension, and such journeys have both literal and metaphorical meanings. A walk consisting of seeking oneself as an artist, spiritual and intellectual travel, and exploring the world of symbols, are the professional domain of authors, and at the same time an excerpt of their mythology.

The essay is an attempt to sketch a panorama of representations of the body, corporeality and their relation to gender identity in prose written after 1989, a caesura of particular significance for corporeality. The text discusses literary images of gender identity on the basis of available studies that show the state of research in this field. The essay refers to the concept of the androgynous myth and also refers to the theories of the ‘opaque body’ and the ‘unwanted body’. The problematics contained in the text refer to the works of Olga Tokarczuk, Natasza Goerke, Izabela Filipiak and Andrzej Czcibor-Piotrowski, among others, which deal with the body-related gender identity. The study does not consider works that contain literary representations of gender identity that function in isolation from the body, but focuses on those that are central to the issues of corporeality. This stems from the assumption of the importance of the bodily experience in a literary work that should not only refer to the body, but also touch on the essence of humanity.

The paper discusses the connection between Olga Tokarczuk’s novel Drive Your Plow over the Bones of the Dead and the poetry of William Blake. Blake’s ideology was to show how mankind had come to the end because of its misdeeds, using the animal imagery, which links him to the topic presented by Tokarczuk, criticizing the cruelty of the authorities towards animals. She quoted Blake at the beginning of every chapter and created a character skilled in translating Blake. Since not much of Blake’s oeuvre has been translated in Macedonian, the translator of this novel had to deal with translating Blake too. Consequently, this text also focuses on the translation problems which she had to solve.

The article seeks to explore the theme of nature’s revenge in Olga Tokarczuk’s novel Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead (2009, translated into English in 2018). The book may be classified as Anthropocene fiction or eco-fiction Tokarczuk’s treatment of vengeful nature in Drive Your Plow… manifests as a literary representation of a physiology of an ecosystem in disequilibrium, pervaded by images of blood in a snowy landscape. The author renders her female protagonist, Janina Duszejko, a proponent and practitioner of a theory proposing that nature wreaks revenge on humans. Tokarczuk presents new ways of imagining agency beyond anthropocentrism. Drive Your Plow may serve as an example of literary fiction from which posthumanist reflections may spring, while simultaneously it oftentime (even if unintentionally) draws on posthumanist philosophy and ethics. Gender theory concerns most areas of woman‘s existence in a society and an artistic text is one of many subject manifestations, which may and is likely to influence public opinions. After the period of literature dominated by heroines fighting for the rights, the woman‑provocateurs came to set free not only their bodies, but also their souls. Apart from the male–female relations (gender theory), Olga Tokarczuk’s short story Najbrzydsza kobieta świata (tr. The Ugliest Woman of World) reveals various aspects of women’s writing, in particular – the aesthetics of ugliness. Within this milieu, the ugliness is locked in two stands: 1. the direct characteristics of the ugliest woman in the world and 2. the shocking element of the suffering aesthetics, namely, the exposure of woman by the others.

In her literary work, Olga Tokarczuk consistently pays attention to the scandal of nonhuman animals’ involuntary suffering. Criticizing the ideology of human domination over nature and the unreflective replication of naturalized standards of behavior toward animals—manifesting, among others, in the tacit acceptance of the hunting “ritual” or the atrocities of industrial farming—she posits the el evation of empathy and insight to the rank of cognitive tools. In her essay “Maski zwierząt,” she encourages not only artists but everyone—starting with scientists who determine new research paradigms and ending with an average consumer of animal products—to use those tools in order to puncture our cultural prejudices and illusions and see beyond them the animal as an Other who is inconceivably close to us. This article attempts to respond to Tokarczuk’s challenge. It tries to decide the ontological status of nonhuman animals in her novels and short stories, reveal the horror of our perceptual inertia which enables systemic oppressions to flourish, and review some of the heterotopian alternatives imagined by Tokarczuk.
