Opis:
The aim of this study is to describe the conditions of citizens’ safety in relation to the elimination of economic availability of traditional cigarettes as harmful products. One of the tasks of the state is to ensure the “security of citizens”. Therefore, the most important aim of this text is to show the content relationship between “the elimination of traditional cigarettes” and the concept of “citizens’ safety”, as laid down in Art. 5 of the Constitution of the Republic of Poland. In the area of the program norms (program standards), special emphasis should be put on the category of “means to achieve” systemic aims. Thus, the excise duty imposed on certain tobacco products can be considered in this context as such a measure. It should be emphasized that objective circumstances, such as harmfulness of traditional cigarettes in the context of the state’s care for the safety of citizens, as well as the availability of less harmful alternatives to traditional cigarettes (such as “heat‐notburn tobacco product”), should affect the final shape of the law in this matter.

Objectives Monitoring tobacco use is one of the most important tobacco control interventions recommended by the World Health Organization. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of cigarette smoking, e-cigarette use, and heated tobacco use in a nationwide sample of adults in Poland, as well as to identify factors associated with smoking, e-cigarette use, and heated tobacco use. Material and Methods This nationwide crosssectional survey was carried out in February 2–4, 2024 using the computer-assisted web interviewing method. The study questionnaire included 17 closed questions on smoking, e-cigarette use, and heated tobacco use. A sample of 1080 adults was selected using a non-probability quota sampling method. Results Data were collected from 1080 adults, age M±SD 48.4±15.5 years, 53% females. Past 30-day smoking was declared by 30.4% of adults in Poland, including 24.5% of daily smokers. Ever e-cigarette use was declared by 33% of respondents, and 20.6% had ever tried heated tobacco. Past 30-day e-cigarette use was declared by 15.2% of adults, wherein 5.9% were daily e-cigarette users. Past 30-day heated tobacco use was declared by 10.9% of respondents, wherein 4.9% were daily heated tobacco users. One-tenth of adults were dual users (cigarette and e-cigarette or heated tobacco), and 6.5% were past 30-day triple users. Age 40–59 years, having less than higher education, and bad economic status were significantly associated with daily smoking (p < 0.05). Age 18–39 years, having less than higher education, and active occupational status (employment/ self-employment) were associated with daily e-cigarette use (p < 0.05). Age 18–39 years and active occupational status were associated with daily heated tobacco use (p < 0.05). Conclusions This study provides comprehensive epidemiological data on the current prevalence of smoking, e-cigarette use, and heated tobacco use. The introduction of e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products evoked changes in social behaviors related to nicotine use.

Introduction. In today’s world, tobacco is the most common cause of morbidity and mortality and is associated with unhealthy behavior. Poland is among the countries with high rates of smoking, and occurrence of tobacco related diseases. Tobacco use by children and adolescents is a serious public health problem because of the immediate and long-lasting harmful effects on health. A large group of current smokers begin smoking during youth. The goal of the work was to culturally and linguistically adapt, and test and pre-evaluate a Polish version of the National Youth Tobacco Survey (NYTS), which identifies and monitors trends in tobacco use among young people. Materials and methods. The test was administered by a test-retest method in 2015 with participation of 47 (25 girls and 22 boys) people aged 17–18. Respondents filled out the questionnaire twice within two weeks. The compliance percentage of individual test items and correlations between individual items in repeated measurements were evaluated. Results. More than seventy percent have reliability ratios at very high or high levels with twenty five percent at moderate levels. Conclusion. The tested Polish version of the NYTS questionnaire may be used in adolescent studies.

Opis:
The paper presents the research results of the agglomeration process of post-production tobacco waste arising during the cigarette production process at British-American Tobacco in Augustów. The agglomeration process tests were carried out on the SS-3 station with the "open compaction chamber-compacting piston" working system, having an open chamber with a diameter of 8 mm. Investigations of agglomeration of post-production tobacco waste were carried out according to the Hartley experiment plan PS/DS-P: Ha4, where the input values were: waste moisture (9, 12 and 15%), process temperature (60, 80 and 100°C), mass of the sample (0,3; 0,6 and 0,9 g) and the matrix hole length (37, 42 and 47 mm). During the tests, the susceptibility to compacting the tested tobacco waste was determined by determining the maximum pressures for agglomerating the raw material and the obtained granulate density. On the basis of the conducted tests, it was found that the tested tobacco waste is a material characterized by high compaction susceptibility, as it was evidenced by the obtained low values of maximum compaction pressures during its compaction. Moisture content of tobacco waste and the process temperature are the parameters having the greatest impact on the values of maximum compaction pressures and the density of granules obtained from tobacco waste. The most advantageous temperature range for carrying out the agglomeration process of tobacco waste from the point of view of the work system load is 60-70°C. The high granulate density obtained during the tests (733,3-1313,32 kg∙m-3) is a very advantageous feature of the product.
W pracy przedstawiono wyniki badań procesu zagęszczania poprodukcyjnych odpadów tytoniu powstałe w trakcie procesu produkcyjnego papierosów w British-American Tobacco w Augustowie. Badania procesu zagęszczania przeprowadzono na stanowisku SS-3, z układem roboczym „otwarta komora zagęszczania-tłok zagęszczający”, z komorą otwartą o średnicy 8 mm. Badania zagęszczania poprodukcyjnych odpadów tytoniu przeprowadzono według planu eksperymentu Hartleya PS/DS-P: Ha4, gdzie wielkościami wejściowymi były wilgotność odpadów (9, 12 i 15%), temperatura procesu (60, 80 i 100°C), masa zagęszczanej próbki (0,3; 0,6 i 0,9 g) oraz długość otworu w matrycy (37, 42 i 47 mm). Wilgotność odpadów tytoniowych i temperatura procesu to parametry mające największy wpływ na wartości maksymalnych nacisków zagęszczających i gęstości granulatu otrzymanego z odpadów tytoniowych. Najkorzystniejszy zakres temperatury prowadzenia procesu zagęszczania odpadów tytoniowych z punktu widzenia obciążenia układu roboczego to zakres 60-70°C.

Dodatkowo, przynajmniej w założeniu, powinny spowodować znaczny wpływ dochodów do budżetu państwa.
The rapidly growing market of e-cigarettes and innovative products has been regulated just recently. Easy accessibility and the low price of electronic cigarettes make smoking a common phenomenon, especially among young people. All kinds of tobacco products that contain a high dose of nicotine are very harmful to health – they cause serious illnesses, significantly increasing the cost of subsequent treatment. Changes related to the health policy introduced by the government regarding the mandatory excise tax on e-liquids and the so-called innovative products are aimed at limiting the availability of this type of stimulant. Taxation of these products will increase their price, and as a result, it will cause a decrease in the interest of the consumer. Additionally – in principle – it should result in a significant impact on the state budget revenues.

Introduction: The World Health Organization (WHO)estimates that together tobacco and alcohol kill about 9 million people annually despite aggressive and widespread public health controls. These legal industries persist because of the demand for their products and their substantial economic influence, which is magnified by the concentration of wealth in the executives of leading corporations that profit from increased legal drug sales.Materials and methods: This preliminary study quantifies the link between global premature deaths from these legal addictive drugs as a function of executive compensation in order to provide the necessary data to make more effective policy recommendations for preventing legal drug-related deaths. Results: The results indicate a need to incentivize chief executive officers(CEOs), such that they have a constant marginal utility per life saved. Conclusions: An executive compensation incentive that moves to eliminate tobacco use is achieved by a pay structure that increases exponentially with the number of lives saved.Key words:tobacco control; alcohol control; global public health; executive compensation

It was analytically examined how great amount of total iron can be absorbed during cigarette smoking. For this purpose, tobacco taken from cigarettes of selected brands (Marlboro, L&M, and Popular) was carefully analyzed before and after smoking. In addition, the cigarette filters were checked in terms of iron content. In all samples iron was determined by means of spectrophotometric method with sulfosalicylic acid. The method was realized with the aid of an original flow system allowing the analytical calibration to be performed with high reliability. As a result iron present in a sample in trace amount was able to be found with very good accuracy and with precision not exceeding 1.5% (in RSD). It was stated that typical amount of iron in a single cigarette is ranged between 0.3 and 0.4 mg. When smoking the risk should be taken into account that even 99% of this amount is transferred to human body without any chance to be limited by the cigarette filter.

The article concerns issues relating to tobacco plant protection, which is an important element of the work of every tobacco grower and often decides on the amount and quality of the crops. In the middle of the 20th century The Tobacco Industry and the Tobacco Growers’ Association supplied plan protection equipment for tobacco growers. Different designs of spraying equipment have been developed for different types of applications and field and crop conditions. In the Polish tobacco industry one of the most popular was the high volume sprayer OP-20. In the first half of the 60s the percentage of sprayer OP-20 was a more than 50% of all sprayers. Gradually, in place of sprayer OP-20 were introduced sprayers type “Puzon” and “Działkowiec”. Very popular and effective were hand compression sprayers – “Sad” and “Rex”, which were placed in a wheelbarrow. In the middle of the 60s tractor mounted sprayer have been used, especially by plant protection stations.

As well as being an extremely widespread addiction, tobacco smoking is a well-known cause of numerous deaths around the world. Most (80-90%) of lung cancer cases occur among smokers. The awareness of harmful effects of smoking is growing constantly. Manufacturers of tobacco products have recently opted to face this challenge by marketing heated tobacco products. Based on the performed research, tobacco companies maintain that these products are less harmful. They advertise their products as a  smokeless, unconventional, less harmful cigarette. Due to the short follow-up period, the studies on consequences of using heated tobacco products are still scarce. This article presents a review of the literature focused on the use of heated tobacco products as an alternative to traditional cigarettes.

Opis:
Introduction and objectives. Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is long life disease that results from an interaction between a polygenetic predisposition and environmental factors, including smoking. The aim of this study was to evaluate beliefs about and awareness of smoking among adolescents with IBD compared to healthy controls. Materials and method. Patients with IBD, Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), and healthy controls were asked to complete a questionnaire on demographic data and smoking status. The questionnaire also included data on beliefs and awareness of smoking-related health effects, including effects on IBD. Results. A total of 139 IBD patients and 108 controls were enrolled in the study. Of the IBD patients, 17/139 (12.2%) were smokers compared to 18/108 (16.7%) of controls (p=0.3). Patients with IBD were nine times more likely to be everyday smokers than occasional smokers (OR=9.2, 95% CI: 1.9- 45.1, p=0.004). No difference was found between patients with CD and UC in their answers to the question of whether “smoking increases the risk for surgery in your type of IBD” (17/28 (60.7%) vs. 10/29 (34.5%), respectively (p=0.047). More patients with CD than UC were aware of the risks of smoking on their disease: extra-intestinal manifestations and disease exacerbation, OR=11.3 (95% CI: 4.1 – 30.9; p=0.000) and OR=19.3 (95% CI: 6.7 – 55.1; p=0.000), respectively. Conclusions. The data obtained demonstrated that adolescents with CD are much more aware of the role of smoking on CD than are their peers with UC; however, this awareness is still unsatisfactory. Therefore, there is an unmet need to implement better anti-smoking strategies for this group of patients.

Objectives To evaluate the health effects of benzene exposure among smoking subjects from a prolonged flaring incident that occurred at the British Petroleum (BP) refinery in Texas City, USA. Material and Methods The study included smoking subjects who had been exposed and unexposed to the benzene release. Using medical charts, clinical data including white blood cell (WBC) counts, platelet counts, hemoglobin, hematocrit, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), creatinine, alkaline phosphatase (ALP), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) in the case of smoking subjects exposed to benzene was reviewed and analyzed. Results A total of 791 tobacco smoking subjects (benzene-exposed: N = 733, unexposed: N = 58) were included. Benzene-exposed subjects had significantly higher levels of WBC (×103/μl) counts (8±2.1 vs. 7.5±1.6, p = 0.003) and platelet (×103/μl) counts (263.7±69.7 vs. 222.9±44.3, p = 0.000) as compared with the unexposed subjects. The mean hemoglobin, hematocrit, BUN, and creatinine levels did not differ significantly between the benzene-exposed and -unexposed smoking subjects. Serum levels of ALP (IU/l) was significantly elevated in the benzene-exposed subjects compared with the unexposed subjects (84.5±16.9 vs. 73.8±15.9, p = 0.002). Similarly, benzene-exposed subjects had significantly higher levels of AST and ALT as compared with those unexposed subjects. Conclusions Despite a smoking history, residents exposed to benzene from the prolonged BP flaring incident experienced significant alterations in hematological and hepatic functions indicating their vulnerability to the risk of developing hepatic or blood related disorders.
