Opis:
Beneficial nanoparticles (SiO2 and TiO2) can have various profound effects on the crop physiological, biochemical and morphological characteristics. Here, we evaluated the mitigation of drought stress in barley genotypes by foliar application of SiO2 and TiO2 nanoparticles under filed condition in North West of Iran. Nanoparticles were foliar applied in late vegetative phase and during reproductive stages. Drought was imposed at by irrigation withdrawals during the dry months in the end of the growing season. We measured parameters related morphological growth, yield, and yield component. The genetic diversity between the genotypes was quite evident and the highest seed yield and yield component were recorded for G1, G2, G4, G11, G12 and G13. Foliar application of nanoparticles considerably affected the plant height, thousand seed weight, biological and seed yield. The best performance was observed for plant treated with SiO2 nanoparticles. Spike length of G2, G6, G13 and G20 considerably responded to nano silicone foliar application. However, the best results for G8, G11 and G20 were obtained by foliar application TiO2 nanoparticles while this treatment decreased the seed yield components in G1, G5, G9, G10, G15 and G20. This could be due to genetic variation between the evaluated genotypes and high sensitivity of some genotypes to the applied concentration. The results of current study showed that application of SiO2 nanoparticles under water stress condition could have more beneficial effects on yield component of barley genotypes.

Surface modification of TiO2 and SiO2 (hydrophilic and hydrophobic) nanoparticles with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) in toluene and methylizobutylketone (MIBK) for TiO2 , and with APTES in MIBK and oleic acid (OA) in n-hexane for SiO2 was performed. The IR and UV-Vis spectroscopy was used to evaluate the effect of surface modification. The IR spectra of SiO2 nanoparticles revealed the presence of aminosilane groups after modification with APTES thus evidencing the reaction between modifying agent and nanoparticle surface. The IR spectra of SiO2 nanoparticles modified with OA in hexane revealed partial modification of hydrophilic nanoparticles while no evidence of surface modification for hydrophobic nanoparticles was noticed.

Opis:
Nanoparticles (NPs) defined as particles having at least one dimension below 100 nm have been applied in the last decade in industry and medicine. Recently, there is an increased concern about the biohazard aspect of the presence of NP in consumer goods and in the environment. Silver NP (Ag NP) cause oxidative stress in mammalian cells in result of generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). This results in genotoxicity and mutagenicity, disturbed mitochondrial respiration, slowed proliferation and cell death. Using the alkaline comet assay, we examined the effect of combined treatment with Ag NP 20 nm or 200 nm and X-rays (2 Gy) in HepG2 cells. In addition, combined treatment with X-rays and titanium dioxide NP (TiO2 NP) 21 nm was also studied. No effect of NP pre-treatment on X-ray induced initial deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) damage levels was observed for all three NP. In contrast, Ag NP treatment preceding exposure to X-rays caused a marked decrease in the rate of single strand break rejoining. The effect was particularly strong for Ag NP 20 nm. TiO2 NP pre-treatment had no effect on DNA repair.

Opis:
In this work, a design equation was presented for a batch-recirculated photoreactor composed of a packed bed reactor (PBR) with immobilised TiO2-P25 nanoparticle thin films on glass beads, and a continuous-flow stirred tank (CFST). The photoreactor was studied in order to remove C.I. Acid Orange 7 (AO7), a monoazo anionic dye from textile industry, by means of UV/TiO2 process. The effect of different operational parameters such as the initial concentration of contaminant, the volume of solution in CFST, the volumetric flow rate of liquid, and the power of light source in the removal efficiency were examined. A rate equation for the removal of AO7 is obtained by mathematical kinetic modelling. The results of reaction kinetic analysis indicate the conformity of removal kinetics with Langmuir-Hinshelwood model (kL-H = 0.74 mg L-1 min-1, Kads = 0.081 mg-1 L). The represented design equation obtained from mathematical kinetic modelling can properly predict the removal rate constant of the contaminant under different operational conditions (R2 = 0.963). Thus the calculated and experimental results are in good agreement with each other.

Opis:
The objective of this study was biosynthesis of titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) using Curcuma longa aqueous extract and characterize them. Study their effect on the growth, sporulation, pathogenicity of Fusarium graminearum and some wheat plants parameters compared with standards industrials nanoparticles. C. longa aquatic extract was used to biosynthesis TiO2 NPs by two methods. At first method, TiO2 was found in both colloidal solutions (CS) and nanopawder while it found in jest nanopawder in second method. All biosynthetic nanoparticles were in nano size. It was: 91.37 nm, 76.36 nm of (CS) and nanopawder for first methods respectively while it was 92.6 nm of nanopawder in second method. All nanoparticles have good optical properties. Crystal’s shape of nanopawder were in three form: anatase, rutilr and brookite and it was anatase in colloidal solutionat first method while it was pure anatase innanopawder when at second method. The average crystallite size of was calculate by Scherer's equation, it was 43.088 nm and 22.881 nm for nanopawder and colloidal solution respectively at first method. It was 45.808 nm for nanopawder at second method. All concentrations of nanoparticles were reduced fungal and spores. These decreasing were more effective using biosynthetic compare with industrial synthetic nanoparticles. There were reductions in damping-off caused by F. graminearum by biosynthetic NBs in both varieties of plant (Al-Rasheed and Tamuze-2). These was better than the effect of industrial synthetic nanoparticles. The resistance to damping off and the growth of plant in Al-Rasheed variety was more sensitive compared with Tamuze-2 variety especially at higher concentrations. There were decrease in all plant's parameters at most concentrations of TiO2 biological synthetic compare with industrial synthetic nanoparticles in Al-Rasheed variety, while there were inductions in some plant's parameters by biosynthetic nanoparticles compared with industrial synthetic in Tamuze-2 variety. Finally, C. longa can be used to biosynthesis TiO2 NPs with good biological properties.

Problem of Post-operative infections of implant materials caused by bacterial adhesion to their surfaces is very serious. Enhancement of antibacterial properties is potentially beneficial for biomaterials value. Therefore, the metallic and metallic oxide nanoparticles attract particular attention as antimicrobial factors. The aim of this work was to create nanotubular (NT) oxide layers on Ti with the addition of ZnO nanoparticles, designed for antibacterial biomedical coatings. Antimicrobial activities of titanium, TiO2 NT and ZnO/TiO2 NT surfaces were evaluated against bacterial strain typical for orthopaedic infections: S. epidermidis. TiO2 NT alone killed the free bacterial cells significantly but promoted their adhesion to the surfaces. The presence of moderate amount of ZnO nanoparticles significantly reduced the S. epidermidis cells adhesion and viability of bacterial cells in contact with modified surfaces. However, higher amount of loaded nanoZnO showed the reduced antimicrobial properties than the medium amount, suggesting the overdose effect.

Opis:
Photocatalysts based on TiO2 co-doped with rare earth metal (RE) and gold nanoparticles have been prepared using a sol-gel method and followed by gold reduction. Specific surface areas of the modified photocatalysts were calculated by the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller method (BET). Diffuse reflectance spectra of the obtained photocatalysts were recorded with a UV-Vis spectrophotometer (DRS UV-Vis). The influence of the type of rare earth metal on photoactivity of Au-RE-TiO2 nanocomposites in model reaction manifested by toluene photodegradation in a gas phase was investigated. The obtained results showed that photodegradation of toluene in the gas phase is possible over Au-RE-TiO2 irradiated by UV or Vis light. The Au-RE-TiO2 photocatalysts relative to undoped TiO2, did not caused an increase of toluene degradation in the air under visible light. The samples doped with Er3+ or Pr3+ presented the highest activity in solar light among of Au-RE-TiO2. It was observed that both metal dopants affected the surface area of TiO2. The Au-RE-TiO2 photocatalysts relative to undoped TiO2 exhibited the absorption properties under Vis light.

Opis:
Polyphenylsulfone (PPSU) membranes are critical for numerous applications, including water treatment, oil separation, energy production, electronic manufacturing, and biomedicine because of their low cost; regulated crystallinity; and chemical, thermal, and mechanical stability. Numerous studies have shown that altering the surface characteristics of PPSU membranes affects their stability and functionality. Nanocomposite membranes of PPSU (P0), PPSU-1%TiO2 (P1), and PPSU-2% TiO2 (P2) were prepared using the phase inversion method. Scanning electron microscopy and thermal analysis were performed to determine the contact angle and mechanical integrity of the proposed membranes. The results showed that the membranes contained channels of different diameters extending between 1.8 μm and 10.3 μm, which made them useful in removing oil. Thermal measurements showed that all of the PPSU membranes were stable at a temperature of not less than 240 °C, and had good mechanical properties, including tensile strength of 7.92 MPa and elongation of 0.217%. These properties enabled them to function in a harsh thermal environment. The experimental results of oil and water separation and BSA solution fouling on membrane P2 showed a 92.95% rejection rate and a flux recovery ratio of 82.56%, respectively, compared to P0 and P1.

Opis:
Rutile-TiO2 nanorod thin films were formed on Ti disks via alkali treatment in NaOH solutions followed by heat treatment at 700°C. Ag nanoparticles were loaded on nanorods using a photo-reduction method to improve the photocatalytic properties of the prepared specimen. The surface characterization and the photo-electrochemical properties of the Ag-loaded TiO2 nanorods were investigated using a field-emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), UV-Vis spectroscopy and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The TiO2 nanorods obtained after the heat treatment were 80 to 180 nm thick and 1 μm long. The thickness of the nanorods increased with the NaOH concentration. The UV-Vis spectra exhibit a shift in the absorption edge of the Ag-loaded TiO2 to the visible light range and further narrowing of the bandgap. The decrease in the size of the capacitive loops in the EIS spectra showed that the Ag loading effectively improved the photocatalytic activity of the TiO2 nanorods.
