Opis:

Bullying at work is a long-standing area of research interest that requires investigation of the role of the individual exposed to systematic negative behaviour. Studies using cross-sectional samples and broad personality measures have found some distinguishing personal characteristics of employees who are bullied compared to others. Few, however have applied theoretical frameworks to explain why personality can play a part in why an individual ends up at the receiving end of bullying and harassment at work. This article applies an overall and specific theoretical model, the vulnerability thesis, to investigating the role of temperament in relation to workplace bullying. The results show that (1) some employees exposed to bullying at work also acted as perpetrators (provocative victims), that (2) exposure to bullying at work is connected with temperamental emotional vulnerability, and that (3) hostility and self-oriented aggression mediate the role of personality in the form of temperament in relation to workplace bullying. Strengths and weaknesses and potential practical implications for helpers of employees exposed to bullying at work are discussed.

The aim of the paper is to present a reconstruction of the constitutive theses of cognitive relativism. The reconstruction is based on some examples of well-known theses and statements that are conceived to be relativistic. I distinguish three constituents of cognitive relativism: 1) the thesis of constructive character of cognition, 2) the thesis of pluralism of cognitive schemes, 3) the thesis of incommensurability of cognitive schemes. The rest of the article aims at, first, proving that Quine's philosophical standpoint is not relativistic as it clashes with the third thesis of relativism. And, second, I try to argue that a relativist may avoid the consequence of agnosticism but, which is not surprising, he/she has to radically reject the idea of the objective truth as the purpose of our cognition.

Opis:

The incompleteness theorems constitute the mathematical core of Gödel’s philosophical challenge. They are given in their “most satisfactory form”, as Gödel saw it, when the formality of theories to which they apply is characterized via Turing machines. These machines codify human mechanical procedures that can be carried out without appealing to higher cognitive capacities. The question naturally arises, whether the theorems justify the claim that the human mind has mathematical abilities that are not shared by any machine. Turing admits that non-mechanical steps of intuition are needed to transcend particular formal theories. Thus, there is a substantive point in comparing Turing’s views with Gödel’s that is expressed by the assertion, “The human mind infinitely surpasses any finite machine”. The parallelisms and tensions between their views are taken as an inspiration for beginning to explore, computationally, the capacities of the human mathematical mind.

The article is devoted to the analysis of academic diploma theses: bachelor’s and master’s, carried out in the course of 1st and 2nd degree Romance Philology between 2005-2017 in the perspective of reflective practice. Based on the assumption of the pre-scientific character of the diploma thesis and the resulting imperative of objectivity, the aim of the article is to examine the traces of subjectivity present in the language of the diploma theses. The subject of interest is both subjectivity expressed in 1 singular person, but above all other, less obvious, more “constructed” forms (e.g. metaphors, expressive use of adjectives), which express the emotional commitment of the author of the work. In conclusion, the analysis of the works shows a conflict of paradigms: the scientific imperative of objectivism with the desire to express emotions aroused by literature, and in this indirect way, also to express one’s self and personality.

The paper concerns the ideological profile of urban movements in Poland. In the first part, the author definesthe concept of urban movement based on the related literature and outlines the history of the urban matterin Poland. Then, attempts are made to reconstruct the ideological profile of urban activism. This is done onthe basis of an analysis that includes the main ideas to which urban activists refer (right to the city, idea ofparticular narratives, city-view) as well as the urban theses that include the postulations developed by theCongress of Urban Movements being the effect of consolidation activities in the Polish urban movements’environment. In conclusion, the key groups of postulations formulated by activists in Polish cities are analysedthrough the perspective of the views contained in the main contemporary political doctrines.

This article gives a detailed indication of what to do in the course of each of these stages of creating a graduate theses.

The starting point for my reflections was a thesis presented by Max Weber more than one hundred years ago. According to this thesis, a Protestant ethos was an important factor responsible for the spectacular economic growth of Northern Europe. In his own reflections, the German scholar paid attention mainly to both Protestant asceticism, which concentrated the energy of believers on the work they did, as well as on theology, especially Calvinism, which provided explanations for hard work and the accumulation of capital. It seems, however, that in his reconstruction of the Protestant ethos, Weber described universal mechanisms which are responsible for social mobilization in general. The problem is that instead of trying to analyze them, he ultimately concentrated on their cultural manifestations. The main aim of my paper is an identification of these mechanisms. They discipline individuals, or more correctly, they discipline the patterns of playing these social roles, which are functionally significant for initiating and sustaining the mobilization process. In other words, when there is a need in a society to achieve specific goals, including economic ones, it should develop social norms which will be able to bolster the engagement of its members and focus their energy on specific aspects of their life. Moreover, there is a need to prepare non‑normative mechanisms, which increase the probability that members of the society will adhere to these social norms. The reflections in this regard seem to be important mainly for developing states. On the one hand, they should prepare mechanisms which allow them to develop their economies. On the other hand, the members of these states must face many costs associated with their implementation and this problem should also be a part of the discussion.

Higher education must respond to dynamically changing job market needs and this has become the third mission of higher education institutions. Traditional methods of sharing knowledge and developing students’ skills are not satisfactory. For this reason, it is necessary to seek teaching alternatives, such as PBL (Problem-Based Learning) and PjBL (Project-Based Learning). This paper presents the idea of applying the above-mentioned methods to the BA in Linguistics for Business at the University of Lodz, an innovative and interdisciplinary BA programme combining linguistics with management. The participants combine skills and knowledge gained throughout their studies, i.e. linguistics, intercultural communication, accounting and finance, or selected aspects of running a business. Moreover, creating group BA projects reflects real-life situations students may encounter in the workplace.

Artykuł realizuje dwa cele: jednym jest opis przebiegu pierwszej edycji konkursu prac licencjackich i magisterskich ukończonych w 2020 r. przez studentów kierunków prowadzonych w Uniwersytecie Łódzkim: Informacja w środowisku cyfrowym oraz Informatologia z biznesowym językiem angielskim. Drugim celem opracowania staje się nakreślenie tła dla łódzkich doświadczeń jako krótki przegląd działań, który obrazuje istniejące konkursy w sposób przekrojowy (tradycja i typy konkursów), przedstawia motywy i dążenia organizatorów (cele konkursów), a także dostarcza pewnych informacji odnośnie oceniania zgłoszonych prac (elementy oceny prac konkursowych). W tej części artykułu przydatnym źródłem okazały się materiały związane z konkursami (ogłoszenia, regulaminy) zamieszczone w Internecie.
The article pursues two goals: one is the description of the course of the first edition of the Competition for bachelor’s and master’s thesis, completed in 2020 by students of conducted at the University of Lodz fields: “Information in the digital environment” and “Informatology with business English”. The second goal of the study is to outline the background for Lodz’s experience, as a short overview of activities that illustrates the existing competitions in a cross-sectional way (tradition and types of competitions), presents the motives and aspirations of the organizers (competition’s goals), and provides some information on the evaluation of submitted works (elements of the evaluation of competition entries). In this part of the article, materials related to competitions (announcements, regulations) posted on the Internet turned out to be a useful source.

Opis:

In this article, I pose the question of what the role of the pseudos theme is in the entire argument of the Republic, which is motivated by a challenge from Thrasymachus, who defined justice as “the advantage of the stronger/ruler.” How can the “beautiful polis” (Kallipolis), based on a “noble falshood” addressed to its rulers in particular, be a good counterargument to the realist Thrasymachus? I show that Plato, wanting to prove that Thrasymachus’s thesis is too narrow and only seemingly realistic description of political reality, explicitly uses the same tool that implicitly lies at the root of the worldview expressed in the rhetorician’s thesis: ideological falsehood. He opposes the ugly ideology (the advantage of the stronger) with a “noble falsehood” (the dogma of love), since falsehood as such is an indispensable structural element of the polis itself, resulting from the weakness of the faculty of reason proper to the human condition. The pseudos theme has a dual function in the Republic: heuristic and structural. First, Plato exposes the implicit ideological falsehood underlying Thrasymachus’s realistic thesis using a falsehood that he [Plato] himself has explicitly proposed. Second, he presents falsehood as a component of the political, which compensates for human ignorance and exploits human susceptibility to normative and cultural implementations.

The article focuses on the French summaries of BA & MA theses written by students of French philology at the University of Wrocław between 2015 and 2020. The objective is to determine to what extent the linguistic, discursive and intellectual dimensions of this short academic text constitute, for the students, a source of challenges during the writing process. The general conclusion is that very often the summary of a diploma thesis looks like a report detailing the activities of the student, instead of summarizing an intellectual trajectory and informing of the results of the research.

Ukończenie studiów i uzyskanie tytułu zawodowego (licencjata, inżyniera, magistra) związane jest z koniecznością stworzenia pracy dyplomowej. W literaturze metodologicznej można spotkać wiele rodzajów prac dyplomowych. Najczęściej podaje się następujący podział: prace o charakterze teoretycznym (oceniające praktykę w świetle literatury i monograficzne), prace o charakterze aplikacyjnym, prace o charakterze projektowym i prace o charakterze badawczym. Celem publikacji jest przedstawienie przygotowania koncepcji badań w pracach dyplomowych o charakterze badawczym. W pierwszym rozdziale przedstawiono etapy fazy koncepcyjnej procesu badawczego. W następnych omówiono po kolei wszystkie fazy: wybór tematu pracy (przedmiotu badań); określenie celów badań; sformułowanie problemów badawczych i/ewentualnie hipotez; wyłonienie zmiennych, ich wskaźników i kategorii (jeśli prowadzimy badania ilościowe); wybór metod, technik i narzędzi badawczych. W zakończeniu przedstawiono przykład koncepcji badań, którą student powinien oddać promotorowi do oceny przed podjęciem dalszych etapów tworzenia pracy dyplomowej (przygotowanie narzędzi badawczych, przeprowadzenie badań, opracowanie materiału badawczego i redagowanie tekstu pracy dyplomowej).
Graduation and completion a university degree (Bachelor Degree, Engineer’s degree, Master Degree) is connected with writing a diploma thesis. There are different kind of diploma thesis in methodological literature. Most frequently they are divided into several types: theoretical diploma thesis, applied diploma thesis, project diploma thesis and research diploma thesis. The objective of this publication is preparation of a concept for research diploma thesis. In the first of this article author shows stages of research process in preparation phase. In the second part of the analysis every step was discussed: the choice of theme (subject of research); the aims of the work, the wording of the research problem or hypothesis, show different variables and categories(if we perform a quantitative research); the choice of methods, research techniques and research tools. In conclusion the example of such concept of research is shown. The student should give this kind of document to the promoter before starting another stages: preparing research tools, conducting research, development research material and text editing).

Celem artykułu jest zaprezentowanie koncepcji prawnofilozoficznej zaproponowanej przez F.A. Hayeka w Prawie, legislacji i wolności. Zostaje ona następnie porównana z teorią prawa G. Radbrucha, przede wszystkim pod względem zasadniczych różnic między reprezentowanymi przez obu myślicieli ideologiami (tj. liberalizm i socjalizm). Teoria austriackiego filozofa zostaje zidentyfikowana jako propozycja tzw. trzeciej drogi, próbująca wykazać brak antagonizmu pomiędzy pozytywizmem a prawnonaturalizmem. Teza ta wynika faktu, że myśl F.A. Hayeka bazuje na dychotomii dwóch źródeł prawa w postaci ustalonej praktyki społecznej następczo usankcjonowanej przez suwerena określanej nomos oraz thesis w postaci aktów prawnych uchwalanych przez kompetentne organy. Pierwsze z nich skorelowane są z szeroko rozumianym prawem prywatnym, które wyłoniło się w głównej mierze z działalności pojedynczych członków społeczeństwa. Drugie powinno stanowić wyłącznie normy umożliwiające funkcjonowanie państwa oraz zabezpieczenie nomos.
The paper aims to present the concept of law proposed by F.A. Hayek in Law, Legislation and Liberty. Hayek’s theory is subsequently compared to G. Radbruch philosophy of law, mainly because of the significant difference in both thinkers’ intellectual backgrounds (i.e., liberalism and socialism). The Austrian philosopher’s theory is identified as a so-called third way proposal, an attempt to demonstrate lack of antagonism between positivism and legal naturalism. This thesis results from the fact that this theory is based on the dichotomy between two sources of law in the form of established social practice subsequently sanctioned by the sovereign, referred to as nomos, and thesis in the form of legal instruments adopted by competent authorities. The first kind are correlated with private law in the broad sense, which law emerged from the activity of individual members of the society. The second kind should only establish norms to enable the state to operate and to safeguard nomos.

W pracy podjęto rozważania nad rozprawą doktorską w kontekście utworu w rozumieniu prawa autorskiego. Zwrócono uwagę, że ze względu na przedmiot, jak i cel, który przyświeca stworzeniu rozprawy doktorskiej, jest ona klasycznym utworem naukowym. Zauważono, że przedmiotowa praca może być ustalona w jednej z form wskazanych przez ustawodawcę (katalog zamknięty), a zatem w tym przypadku nie obowiązuje zasada ustalenia utworu w dowolnej formie. W pracy przeanalizowano udział promotora w przygotowaniu rozprawy doktorskiej, a także zasygnalizowano problem plagiatu oraz ghostwritingu. Ponadto wskazano, w czym przejawia się oryginalność (cecha indywidualności) rozprawy doktorskiej.
The article considers a doctoral dissertation to be a work in meaning of copyright law. It was noted that a dissertation is a typical example of a scientific work when taken under consideration both for its subject and for its purpose. It also was noted that a dissertation may take one of the forms allowed by the law (closed catalogue), so in this matter the rule that work can be determined in any form does not apply. The issues of a thesis supervisor’s role in working on a dissertation and being notified of such problems such as plagiarism and ghostwriting also were stressed, and it was also pointed out how the feature of individuality manifests itself in a dissertation.

The literature about composer Wojciech Łukaszewski includes two books, nine scholarly articles, five theses, over 80 newspaper articles and web pages. The book by M. Łukaszewski (ed. WSP, Częstochowa 1997) contains a description of the life history and memories of W. Łukaszewski as well as a thematic catalogue of Łukaszewski’s works. The book Musical Interludes is the first, complete edition of the collected journalistic work of Łukaszewski, which covers 126 reviews and 7 interviews. So far, nine scientific articles about Łukaszewski have appeared in scholarly journals in Częstochowa, Katowice, Bydgoszcz and Warsaw. Bibliographic entries about Łukaszewski are inscribed in: Musical Encyclopedia of PWM, the dictionary Polish Composers between 1918-2000, Lexicon of Polish Music Teachers, International Who’s Who in Music and Musicians and others. This article is an attempt to frontally pose a question queer theory gravitates around, yet never effectively spells out: what is a togetherness of those who have nothing in common but their desire to undo group ties? First, I consider the take-up of Lacan’s ethical experiment in Seminar VII, the Ethics of Psychoanalysis by queer theorists. I contend that queer theory has not given Lacan’s interpretation of Antigone its full import, which demands its placement in the philosophical tradition of the West brought to its highest fruition in Kant. I further contend, however, that to do so does not quite offer a solution to the queer problem, for, as contemporary debate on the political import of Antigone shows, the purity of her desire does not immediately translate into a sustainable politics. Lacan himself was faced with the problem of translating his ethics into a politics after his “excommunication” from the psychoanalytic establishment, and came to falter before it. Nevertheless, Lacan’s efforts allow us to pose the undoubtedly queer question of how to group together those whose only attribute is to undo group ties. Responding to the unanswerable demands of a theory and a practice that allows us to answer that question, I propose the figure of the smoker’s communism, as elaborated upon by Mladen Dolar, as a preliminary queer suggestion as to how we might go about mitigating the gap between Lacan’s ethical brilliance and his admitted political failure.

The article tackles the problem of models of communication in science. The formal division of communication processes into oral and written does not resolve the problem of attitude. The author defines successful communication as a win-win game, based on the respect and equality of the partners, regardless of their position in the world of science. The core characteristics of the process of scientific communication are indicated , such as openness, fairness, support, and creation. The task of creating the right atmosphere for science communication belongs to moderators, who should not allow privilege and differentiation of position to affect scientific communication processes.

Opis:

This article describes the ways to support theses in television news programs. The research material is based on the three most popular programs on Polish television: Fakty, Wiadomości and Teleexpress. Information which was analyzed, was presented from March 1st–3rd, 2017. As a result of the analysis it was possible to identify the theses, which are: quotations, paraphrases of public statements or journalistic conclusions resulting from interpretation of socio-political phenomena. The subjects in the question are verbalized by journalists (who are running the program) or are included in the narratives accompanying the presented film material. Additionally, they also appear in graphically animated banner inscriptions. The support is mostly verbal – the media primarily use two techniques: ab auctoritate (expert statement, politics) and ab exemplo. The second group of theses are the graphical ways to support them – where evidence and examples are most often drawn from online sources: what dominates is the influence of the activities of public figures in social media. In addition, scans of various official documents, open letters are displayed, data visualizations in the form of tables, graphs and diagrams are less frequent. What is valid there were also theses without support – the role of the support is taken by the credible medium. It is interesting to encourage the inferential activity of program viewers – only the premises are presented, drawing the conclusion is the task of the recipient.
W artykule opisane są sposoby wspierania tez w telewizyjnych programach informacyjnych. Jako materiał badawczy służą wydania trzech najpopularniejszych w Polsce programów: Faktów, Wiadomości oraz Teleexpressu. Analizie poddano informacje wyemitowane w dniach 1–3 marca 2017 r. W wyniku analizy udało się ustalić źródła pochodzenia tez – są cytatami, parafrazami wypowiedzi osób publicznych lub konkluzjami dziennikarskimi, które stanowią efekt interpretacji zjawisk społeczno-politycznych. Tezy, o których mowa, są werbalizowane przez dziennikarzy (prowadzących program lub terenowych) lub zawarte w narracjach towarzyszących prezentowanym materiałom filmowym. Dodatkowo pojawiają się także w graficznie animowanych napisach banerowych. Wsparcie tez najczęściej ma postać werbalną – media posługują się przede wszystkim dwiema technikami: ab auctoritate (wypowiedzi eksperta, polityka) oraz ab exemplo. Drugą grupę stanowią graficzne sposoby wspierania tez, gdzie przesłanki, dowody i przykłady najczęściej zaczerpnięte są ze źródeł internetowych: dominują tu owoce aktywności osób publicznych w mediach społecznościowych. Ponadto prezentowane są skany różnych dokumentów urzędowych, listów otwartych, rzadziej pojawiają się wizualizacje danych w postaci tabel, wykresów i diagramów. Wykryto także tezy bez wsparcia – jego rolę pełni wiarygodność medium. Ciekawy zabiegiem jest zachęcanie do aktywności inferencyjnej widzów programu – prezentowane są wyłącznie przesłanki, stworzenie konkluzji to już zadanie odbiorcy.

The article contains a list of bachelor’s and master’s theses at the Faculty of Theology of  Nicolaus Copernicus University stored in the University Archive. The list covers the years 2001-2010. The theses are arranged in chronological and alphabetical order by the annual date of the final exam and the name of author's work in a given year. The information included in the catalogue comes from the UsosWeb system. Additionally, this article presents the tables; the first one contains data on the number of graduated students along with their supervisors, and the other one the number of the written works in different years. As the catalogue is an archival aid, the author also included currently valid rules for the use of theses in the Archive of  Nicolaus Copernicus University.

This is a paper for a special issue of Semiotic Studies devoted to Stanislaw Krajewski’s paper (2020). This paper gives some supplementary notes to Krajewski’s (2020) on the Anti-Mechanist Arguments based on Gödel’s incompleteness theorem. In Section 3, we give some additional explanations to Section 4–6 in Krajewski’s (2020) and classify some misunderstandings of Gödel’s incompleteness theorem related to AntiMechanist Arguments. In Section 4 and 5, we give a more detailed discussion of Gödel’s Disjunctive Thesis, Gödel’s Undemonstrability of Consistency Thesis and the definability of natural numbers as in Section 7–8 in Krajewski’s (2020), describing how recent advances bear on these issues.

In the Italian academic discourse research, Master’s degree theses used to be studied mainly from the perspective of linguistic competencies of their authors. However, strictly linguistic skills are not the only challenge for undergraduate, who must also convey intellectual content in appropriate discursive and rhetorical forms. The paper explores the patterns of a peculiar form of “collaborative writing”, i.e. the cooperation between the thesis supervisor and the student. Using the example of Master’s theses in lin- guistics, written in Italian as a foreign language, three basic didactic approaches are discussed in the paper. In the didactics of content the supervisors emphasize knowledge, i.e. linguistic concepts expected to be applied in a Master’s thesis. In the didactics of forms, the supervisors focus on the linguistic code, that  is, on grammatical and lexical correctness of the Master’s thesis. In the didactics of forms of content the supervisors use regularities observed in academic discourse, such as genre and rhetorical structures, as valuable teaching resources likely to help students develop metacommunicative awareness.

Andrzej Kuropatnicki’ academic graphical thesisGraphical academic theses are a very interesting source due to its interdisciplinary nature and the richness of their ideological, political or artistic content. Nevertheless, a majority of “Polish theses” have not been properly examined or analysed by Polish researchers. This is also true for a highly valuable Kuropatnicki’s graphical thesis of 1682, being an apotheosis of King Jan III Sobieski as the victor of Chocim, and Prince Jakub as his successor on the throne, which for a long time had been known only in part. The discovery of the whole original thesis in the National Library in Prague made it possible a thorough and multi-faceted study of the source and to broaden the current knowledge on the subject. Using the hermeneutic approach, philological and comparative methods, together with the literature on the subject of history of arts, it was possible to present the authors of the graphic (the etcher and painter), its inspirer, and also its sophisticated scientific, ideological, artistic and socio-political context, which led to the printing and propagating of Kuropatnicki’s graphical thesis. In addition, the basic research terminology has been made uniform and some pioneering interpretations put forward.Kuropatnicki’s graphical thesis turned out to be an original and in many aspects innovative ideological and propagandist medium to glorify King Jan III Sobieski and his son in the iconography of the so-called “pre-Vienna epoch”. A prestigious representation of the king in the all’antica type ideally inscribed to both Sobieski’s personal political programme, and the state one, for it explicitly manifested pro-Habsburg and anti-Turkish sentiments in the Commonwealth at that time.

W artykule autorka stawia pytanie: czy można stosować w stosunku do prac dyplomowych sposób definiowania pojęć: „samodzielne” i „opracowanie” z ustawy o prawie autorskim, czy też należy poprzestać na wykładni gramatycznej pojęć dokonywanej na podstawie ustawy Prawo o szkolnictwie wyższym (w myśl zasady autonomii pojęć w ramach danego aktu prawnego)? W celu odpowiedzi na pytanie autorka wskazuje na znaczenie słownikowe pojęć: „samodzielne” i „opracowanie”, następnie przedstawia znaczenie słów „samodzielne” i „opracowanie” na gruncie prawa autorskiego. Autorka dochodzi do wniosku, że zestawienie określeń „samodzielne” i „opracowanie” używanych w definiowaniu pracy dyplomowej przez ustawę Prawo o szkolnictwie wyższym i na gruncie prawa autorskiego wzajemnie się wyklucza. Dokonywanie wykładni sformułowania „samodzielne opracowanie” na gruncie ustawy Prawo o szkolnictwie wyższym powinno odbywać się w drodze wykładni gramatycznej tych pojęć. W dalszej części artykułu autorka zastanawia się, czy brak zgodności w rozumieniu pojęć „opracowanie” i „samodzielność” na gruncie prawa autorskiego i ustawy Prawo o szkolnictwie wyższym wyklucza możliwość ochrony prac dyplomowych na gruncie prawa autorskiego. Dochodzi do wniosku, że prace dyplomowe mogą stanowić przedmiot prawa autorskiego, o ile spełniają warunki wyznaczane przez art. 1 ustawy o prawie autorskim i prawach pokrewnych. Chodzi tutaj o specyficzne dla tej gałęzi prawa przesłanki warunkujące objęcie ochroną prawa autorskiego intelektualnych wytworów pracy ludzkiej. Istnieją one, obok wymogów formułowanych co do charakteru pracy dyplomowej w ustawie Prawo o szkolnictwie wyższym, w tym zapisów wskazujących na określony sposób wyrażenia, konieczność utrwalenia pracy dyplomowej (w przypadku prac pisemnych) oraz konieczność posiadania określonej wartości.
In the article, the author puts a following question: can the way of defining terms “independent” and “work” from Act on Copyright be used in relations to diploma theses, or should these definitions be replaced by the grammatical interpretation on the basis of Law on Higher Education Act (according to the rule of terms’ autonomy in specific legal act)? To answer the question, the author introduces dictionary meanings of considered terms, and then presents their meaning on the grounds of copyright. The author arrives at conclusion that different definitions of words “independent” and “work”, used to define diploma thesis by the Law on Higher Education Act and on the grounds of copyright, are mutually exclusive. Interpretation of the phrase “independent work” on the basis of Law on Higher Education Act should happen through grammatical interpretation of these terms. In the next part of the article, the author wonders if lack of agreement on the meaning of terms “work” and “independence” between copyright law and Law on Higher Education Act eliminates the possibility of copyright protection of diploma theses. The author arrives at conclusion that diploma thesis can be an object of copyright, as long as they fulfil conditions named by Art. 1 of the Copyright Act. These conditions consist of specific for this branch of the law prerequisite conditions of providing copyright protection for intellectual product of human labour. They exist next to character requirements of diploma thesis in the Law on Higher Education Act, which include specific way of expression, necessity of preservation of diploma thesis (in case of written thesis) and necessity of presenting certain value.

Opis:

This paper contains an analysis of the possible forms and functions of religious sensemaking in modern society. Based on the thesis of desecularisation the author discusses the changes caused in the relationship between individual and religion by the altering system of social relationships, along with a more detailed analysis of the relationship between social exclusion and religious sensemaking. The author argues that owing to the complex nature of modernity people’s uncertainty absorption mechanisms prefer distinction schemes that apply clear sensemaking distinctions which remain stable over a longer period of time. The author finds that the key role of religious communication lies in that it can more effectively shape the identities of people than other social mechanisms, in the sense that it can offer an experience of certainty. The author discusses the situation of social exclusion as a particular area of religious sensemaking when the person’s fundamentally positive self-evaluation that has developed in the existing sensemaking situation reflecting on the individual himself can no longer be or can hardly be maintained any longer.

Celem pracy jest zbadanie stopnia, w jakim, po teoretycznej prezentacji znaczeń, form i użycia wybranych konstrukcji modalnych w języku angielskim podczas wykładu z gramatyki opisowej tego języka, studenci bielskiej anglistyki są w stanie rozpoznać te konstrukcje w autentycznych materiałach językowych. Skupia się ona na ukazaniu w dyskursie, poprzez korpusy języka angielskiego BNC lub COCA, wybranych konstrukcji modalnych w tym języku, jak centralne czasowniki modalne występujące w aspekcie dokonanym, na przykładzie ‘must HAVE done’, oraz niektórych ‘pośrednich’ czasowników modalnych (od 1. must have; 2. DARE do; 3.WE/I shall; 4. BE about to; 5. BE to; 6. HAVE got to; 7. BE bound to; 8. BE willing to; do 9. HAPPEN to), w następstwie zdalnej formy wykładu na ich temat w zespole klasowym gramatyki opisowej języka angielskiego w ramach aplikacji MS Teams, podczas pandemii koronawirusa. Studium przypadku dotyczy zadania w zespole wykładu dla 64 studentów pierwszego roku filologii angielskiej w styczniu 2021 roku. Zadanie miało format pliku do edycji w postaci dokumentu MS Word. Z ww. korpusów należało wyselekcjonować, skopiować i zacytować fragmenty dyskursu z rozpoznanymi konstrukcjami modalnymi od 1 do 9, po jednym w przypadku każdej, oprócz dwóch dla ‘BE about to’. W skład tekstu wchodzi sześć rozdziałów. Dwa pierwsze sygnalizują główne tezy językoznawstwa kognitywnego, którego to osiągnięcia nawiązują do akwizycji nowego materiału językowego w oparciu o użycie języka. Kolejne trzy części dotyczą przeprowadzonego badania: część metodologiczna, część zawierająca analizę osiągniętych wyników i dyskusję, ogólne wnioski z badania. Natomiast ostatnia część sygnalizuje, w jaki sposób niektóre tezy językoznawstwa kognitywnego odnoszą się do opisanego badania.
The aim of the present paper is to examine the degree to which the first year students of English philology at ATH in Bielsko-Biala are able to recognize the particular modal constructions occurring in authentic linguistic materials, after having been introduced to their forms and meanings theoretically. The paper focuses on contextualization by means of linguistic corpora of selected English modal constructions, such as the perfective use of central modals on the example of ‘must HAVE done’, and particular ‘intermediate’ modals (1. must have; 2. dare + bare infinitive; 3. WE/I shall; 4. BE about to; 5. BE to; 6. HAVE got to; 7. BE bound to; 8. BE willing to; 9. HAPPEN to), following a remote lecture on descriptive grammar of the English language via the MS Teams application during the coronavirus lockdown in January, 2021. The case study concerns the results obtained from an assignment administered to 64 first year students, presented in four tables. The assignment, attached in the form of an MS Word file to edit, required the students to select and cite from either of the two corpora of the English language – BNC or COCA – examples of authentic use of each of the modal constructions studied during one of the lectures. The paper consists of six sections, two on the main theses in cognitive linguistics, whose achievements pertain to usage-based acquisition of new linguistic material, three parts related to the research conducted, including the methodological part, an analysis of the results obtained, followed by a discussion and general conclusions. The last section signals how selected theses of cognitive linguistics apply to the results of the said research.

Tekst jest poświęcony problemowi implementacji nieobliczalności w świecie realnym. Podstawowe pytanie jest takie: czy logiczna nieefektywność ma swoją realizację w świecie fizycznym, albo, czy niealgorytmiczność posiada swój „fizyczny/ materialny” nośnik? Konkluzja jest zaś następująca: algorytmicznie zinterpretowana teoria chaosu deterministycznego koresponduje z przypadkową/nierozstrzygalną częścią matematyki. Trzeba przy tym jednak stale mieć na względzie, że zawsze jest to nierozstrzygalność, niealgorytmiczność, przypadkowość z modelu, w którym dokonujemy deskrypcji.
The paper is devoted to the problem of the implementation of incomputability in the real world. It considers the following basic question: has logical noneffectiveness its realization in the physical world or, has non-algorithmicity a physical/ material medium? The conclusion is: the algorithmically interpreted theory of deterministic chaos corresponds with the non-random/decidable part of mathematics. It should be, however, taken into account that it is always the nonalgorithmicity, randomness of models in which a description is formed.

Opis:

Academic authors employ various language means in order to construct and disseminate knowledge, to sound persuasive, to undergird their arguments, but also to seek agreement within the academic community. The aim of this paper is to analyse a selected group of rhetorical strategies used by Anglophone and Czech authors of Linguistics research articles (RAs) and research theses (RTs). These strategies are assumed to vary in both academic genres since the position of their writers within the academic community differs. Even though authors of RAs have to meet reviewers’ requirements in order for their article to be published, so their relative position may be lower than that of the reviewers’, authors of RAs may have the same “absolute status” as the reviewers may be just as expert in that particular field. By contrast, the status of research students is lower than that of their evaluators both in relative and absolute terms. Even though students may gain some learned authority in presenting an original contribution, their assessors command both learned and institutional authority, hence are endowed with a higher status. Apart from comparing rhetorical strategies used in RAs and RTs, the paper focuses on cross-cultural differences between Anglophone and Czech academic writing traditions.

Much in recent discussions on legal positivism suggests that the controversy surrounding the notion turns on the distinction between inclusive and exclusive legal positivism. As a point of departure in distinguishing them, the separation principle is helpful. The separation principle counts as the contradictory of the morality principle, according to which there is “necessary overlap” between the law and morality. What the legal positivist’s denial of the morality principle comes to can be refined, we are told, by appealing to the distinction between inclusive and exclusive legal positivism. One can acquire a broader perspective by opening up the field in order to cover not only inclusive and exclusive legal positivism but also non-positivism, represented by the defence of the morality principle, that is the view that there is necessary overlap between the law and morality. Say what you will about inclusive versus exclusive legal positivism – some defend the distinction, others dismiss inclusive legal positivism as a non-starter. In any case, I want to argue that a far more fundamental distinction within the positivist camp lies elsewhere. The distinction I have in mind is that between legal positivism qua naturalism (J. Austin) and legal positivism without naturalism (H. Kelsen). For reasons institutional in nature, legal positivism has largely been discussed in a vacuum, there is a standing presumption to the effect that there are ties between legal positivism and ‘positivism writ large’ in the greater philosophical tradition – or, as it would be put in present-day philosophical circles, ties between legal positivism and naturalism.

Opis:

François de Curel (1854-1928) went down into the history of the French theater as an author of ‘thesis plays’. However, his works contain the features of the so-called ‘drama crisis’ which manifests itself at the turn of the 19th and 20th century, by the rejection of the canonical rules advocated since Aristotle. In fact, by analyzing A False Saint (1892), we are forced to note that the writer is undermining the dramatic structure by shifting his gaze from action to the study of the souls of the characters. Deprived of all will, they slowly get bogged down in their shady as inert world. In this way, the French playwright puts emphasis not on ‘acting character’ but on ‘retrospective character’ (passive) who dwells on his unhappy life.
François de Curel (1854-1928) zapisał się w historii francuskiego teatru jako autor „dramatów z tezą”. Niemniej jego twórczość zawierała w sobie cechy „kryzysu dramatu”, który przypadł na przełom XIX i XX wieku, a który charakteryzował się odrzuceniem kanonicznych reguł gatunkowych przestrzeganych od czasów Arystotelesa. Analizując utwór Odwrotna strona świętości (1892), zauważyć można, jak pisarz podważa w nim klasyczną strukturę dramatyczną, koncentrując się na psychologii postaci, a nie na wartkiej konstrukcji akcji. Pozbawieni wszelakiej woli bohaterowie pogrążają się w swym tyleż niespokojnym, co bezwładnym świecie. W ten sposób francuski dramatopisarz kładzie nacisk nie na „postać działającą”, lecz na „postać retrospekcyjną” (bierną), która rozwodzi się nad swoim nieszczęśliwym życiem.

Opis:

Philosophy should seriously take into account the presence of computers. Computer enthusiasts point towards a new Pythagoreanism, a far reaching generalization of logical or mathematical views of the world. Most of us try to retain a belief in the permanence of human superiority over robots. To justify this superiority, Gödel’s theorem has been invoked, but it can be demonstrated that this is not sufficient. Other attempts are based on the scope and fullness of our perception and feelings. Yet the fact is that more and more can be computer simulated. In order to secure human superiority over robots, reference to the realm of human relations and attitudes seems more promising. Insights provided by philosophy of dialogue can help. They suggest an ultimate extension of the Turing test. In addition, it seems that in order to justify the belief in human superiority one must rely on the individual experiences that indicate a realm that is not merely subjective. It makes sense to call it religious.

Artykuł ma na celu przedstawienie pozytywistycznej tezy o społecznym źródle prawa w kontekście rozważań metafizyki klasycznej. Wykorzystano metodę analizy tekstów źródłowych i dokonano abstrakcji tez, które można uznać za metafizyczne. Twierdzenia metafizyczne, to twierdzenia egzystencjalne, a także esencjalne, które dany autor przyjmuje wprost, bądź są możliwe do rekonstrukcji na podstawie wniosków, które wyprowadza. Rozumowanie zostało oparte na przekonaniu, że uniwersalność metafizyki należy rozumieć również w aspekcie czasowym. Teza o zmienności sposobów rozumienia rzeczywistości, wraz z rozwojem ludzkości, jest jedną z kardynalnych założeń pozytywizmu w ogóle. W oparciu o to historiozoficzne prawidło, August Comte wyprowadza dalsze wnioski, co do filozofii możliwej na przyszłość. Negacja metafizyki prowadzi do niepogłębionego, być może nieświadomego, przyjęcia tez, które w historii filozofii zostały już opracowane. Przemyślenia zaprezentowane w niniejszym artykule zasadniczo skoncentrowane są na zagadnieniu sposobu bytowania społeczeństwa. Jego rozumienie warunkuje rozumienie faktów społecznych i na tej płaszczyźnie prowadzi do wniosków na temat społecznej źródłowości prawa. Główna część rozważań umiejscowiona została w kontekście historycznym, co pozwala dostrzec elementy trudno uchwytne współcześnie. Jednym z wniosków jest ustalenie, że metafizyka, wobec której pozytywizm występuje, jest tylko jednym nurtem, który panował w XIX - wiecznej filozofii. Ze względu na brak szczegółowych opracowań zagadnienia, autor sygnalizuje problemy, rozpatrując je na poziomie ogólnym.
The aim of this article is to present a legal positivist social source thesis in the context of classical metaphysical reflection. Author uses the method of analysing the source texts and abstracts theses that can be considered as metaphysical. Metaphysical theses divide into existential and essential. They are expressed directly by an author or possible to reconstruct. Reasoning was based on convenience that universality of metaphysics should be considered temporally. The thesis about the evolution of ways of understanding reality, along with the development of mankind, is one of the cardinal assumptions of positivism in general. Based on this historiosophical rule, August Comte draws further conclusions about a possible modern philosophy for the future. The denial of metaphysics leads to cursory, perhaps unconscious, acceptance of the theses that have already been developed in the history of philosophy. The reflections are essentially focused on the issue of ontological status of society. Its understanding determines the understanding of social facts and seems to have an impact on social source thesis. The main part of the reflection is placed in a historical context. It enables to examine some aspects that are difficult to consider nowadays. One of the conclusions is that metaphysics to which positivism opposes is dominant in 19th century philosophy, but in general only one of many schools of thought. Since there is no specific literature on that matter, author signalize problems considering them generally.

Artykuł stawia sobie za cel, poprzez skorzystanie z bogactwa pojęciowego systemu filozofii św. Tomasza i z użyciem jego typu pojęć, sformułowanie ważnego zagadnienia współczesnej filozofii matematyki – tezy Churcha [CT]. Wskazany cel starano się najpierw uzyskać przez pogłębioną analizę Tomaszowego określenia prawdy jako „adaequatio rei et intellectus”. Analiza ta ujawniła wielkie bogactwo treści filozoficznych leżących u podstaw i ukazała jej nietrywialność. Efektem końcowym jest próba sformułowania tezy Churcha jako specyficznej instantacji definicji prawdy Tomasza. Wynik pracy jest niejednoznaczny i dlatego stanowi swoiste wyzwanie dla zwolenników tomizmu do dyskusji na ten temat.
The paper aims, by using the richness of the conceptual system of St. Thomas' philosophy and using his type of concepts, to formulate an important issue of contemporary philosophy of mathematics - Church's thesis [CT]. The above-mentioned goal was first attempted to be achieved through a deeper analysis of Thomas's definition of truth as "adaequatio rei et intellectus". This analysis revealed a great wealth of underlying philosophical content and showed its nontriviality. The final result is an attempt to formulate Church’s thesis as a specific instance of Thomas’ definition of truth. The result of the work is ambiguous and therefore it constitutes a specific challenge for the supporters of Thomism to discuss this topic.

The aim of the paper is to present the underlying reason of the unsolved symbolgrounding problem. The Church-Turing Thesis states that a physical problem,for which there is an algorithm of solution, can be solved by a Turingmachine, but machine operations neglect the semantic relationship betweensymbols and their meaning. Symbols are objects that are manipulated on rulesbased on their shapes. The computations are independent of the context, mentalstates, emotions, or feelings. The symbol processing operations are interpretedby the machine in a way quite different from the cognitive processes.Cognitive activities of living organisms and computation differ from each other,because of the way they act in the real word. The result is the problem ofmutual understanding of symbol grounding.

Ramy prezentowanego artykułu wyznaczają dwa cele. Po pierwsze, ugruntowanie obrazu „prawnika liminalnego”. Realizując to zadanie zamierzam dokonać adaptacji kategorii liminalności do opisu zawodu prawnika. Po drugie, przedstawienie linii argumentacyjnej, odwołującej się do tezy o rozdziale ról, która skłonić ma do rozważenia przedłożonej propozycji. Tak postawione cele zostaną zrealizowane w trzech etapach. Punktem wyjścia czynię rozpoznanie pojęcia liminalności. W tym zakresie odwołam się do ustaleń dwóch antropologów Arnolda van Gennepa i Victora Turnera. W kolejnym kroku omawiam za Jonasem Söderlund i Elisabeth Borg dominujące sposoby badania liminalności w literaturze z zakresu socjologii organizacji i zarządzania. W ostatnim punkcie ustalenia te odnoszę do tezy o rozdziale ról, wyróżniając dwa jej ujęcia. W ramach tego odniesienia usiłuję wykazać, że teza o rozdziale ról wpisuje się w liminalne ujęcie roli zawodowej. Wniosek ten stanowi argument na rzecz myślenia o prawniku w kategoriach liminalności.
The article has two main goals. The first is to establish the image of a lawyer’s liminality. To carry out this task, I adapt the category of liminality to the description of the legal profession. The second is to present argumentation that draws on the thesis about the differentiation of roles, which will assist consideration of the main proposition. These goals are implemented in three stages. My starting point is an exploration of the concept of liminality. In this regard, I refer to the findings of two anthropologists: Arnold van Gennep and Victor Turner. In the next step, I discuss, following Jonas Söderlund and Elisabeth Borg, the dominant ways of examining liminality in the sociology of the organization and management of professional groups. In the last section, I relate these findings to the thesis about the differentiation of roles, distinguishing two of its approaches. As part of this reference, I try to show that the thesis on the differentiation of roles fits into the liminal approach to the professional role. This conclusion is an argument in favour of thinking about a lawyer’s liminality.

Opis:

The aim of this paper is to present various answers to the skeptical argument and propose an alternative solution. Suggested solution refers to the results of empirical research which lead to abandonment of entailment thesis concerning knowledge. My answer is contextualist inasmuch as it recognizes the existence of different concepts of knowledge. The applicability of these concepts depends on the situation; in a skeptical context the concept of knowledge is not accompanied by appropriate belief, and in ordinary contexts knowledge requires a belief of specific content.
Celem niniejszej pracy jest przedstawienie różnych prób wyjaśnienia, dlaczego argumenty sceptyczne mają dużą siłę przekonywania, a przy tym ich konkluzja wydaje się niemożliwa do przyjęcia. Zaproponuję przy tym własną diagnozę takiego stanu rzeczy, która odwołuje się do wyników badań w ramach filozofii eksperymentalnej wskazujących na istnienie takiego rodzaju wiedzy, która nie pociąga za sobą odpowiedniego przekonania.

Opis:

Purpose of his article is to present to the reader the phenomenon of submitting somebody else’s MA thesis as one’s own. Based on author’s studies (experiment, in-depth interviews and content analysis) the most important characteristics of this “business” are described: terms of transactions, buyers and sellers characteristics, prices, seasonal, types of thesis and so on. In the second part of this article is presented the interpretation of the phenomenon contexted to Robert Merton’s functional theory. The theory helps to present selling and buying thesis as an innovative strategy in educational system, but at the same time dysfunctional. Not only a microsociological point of view is presented but also a broader context is described: anomy phenomena in Polish society.

This paper is an attempt to evaluate the conceptual relationship between two central elements of the theory of antitrust: competition and consumer welfare. These two notions are analysed in their mutual dependency. In terms of methodology, the paper proposes to structurally separate competition from consumer welfare. This technique is successfully applied in the domain of legal philosophy when the correlation between law and morality is debated. The main purpose of this paper is to show that both competition and consumer welfare are economic values of fundamental importance with no ex ante hierarchical dominance of consumer welfare over competition. In case of conflict, priority might be given to either of these values depending on the context of the assessment. This paper has a discursive character, it constitutes a response to Dawid Miąsik’s article entitled: ‘Controlled Chaos with Consumer Welfare as the Winner – a Study of the Goals of Polish Antitrust Law’ which was published in the ‘Yearbook of Antitrust and Regulatory Studies’ 2008 vol. 1.

Opis:

The core of legal positivism is the so-called social source thesis, which claims that legal facts are determined only by social facts. I examine an interpretation of this thesis that uses metaphysical grounding as an exact relation between legal facts and social facts. I argue that the current interpretation of the social source thesis in terms of metaphysical grounding has significant drawbacks that stem from it being based on the view that metaphysical grounding is a primitive relation. For that reason, the current interpretation is unintelligible and poses problems with explaining the normativity of legal facts. I present two other views on metaphysical grounding: that it holds due to essences of facts and that it holds due to metaphysical laws. I apply the notion that metaphysical grounding holds due to metaphysical laws and argue that in the case of grounding of legal facts in social facts, this metaphysical law is constituted by instrumental rationality. It provides intelligibility to this grounding relation, is able to explain the normative character of legal facts, and is compatible with the general form of explanation.
Rdzeniem pozytywizmu prawnego jest tzw. teza o społecznych źródłach prawa, która stanowi, że fakty prawne są zdeterminowane jedynie przez fakty społeczne. W niniejszym artykule badam interpretację tej tezy, która korzysta z relacji metafizycznego ugruntowania jako dokładnej relacji zachodzącej pomiędzy faktami prawnymi a faktami społecznymi. Twierdzę, że dotychczasowa interpretacja tezy o społecznych źródłach prawa korzystająca z relacji metafizycznego ugruntowania posiada znaczące wady z powodu bycia opartą na poglądzie, że metafizyczne ugruntowanie jest relacją pierwotną. Z tego względu, obecna interpretacja jest nieprzejrzysta i ma problem z wyjaśnieniem normatywności faktów prawnych. Przedstawiam dwa inne poglądy na metafizyczne ugruntowanie: że zachodzi ze względu na istoty faktów oraz, że zachodzi ze względu na prawa metafizyczne. Korzystam z ujęcia metafizycznego ugruntowania zachodzącego ze względu na prawa metafizyczne i argumentuję, że dla sytuacji ugruntowania faktów prawnych w faktach społecznych tym metafizycznym ugruntowaniem jest racjonalność instrumentalna. Dostarcza to przejrzystości dla tej relacji ugruntowania, jest w stanie wyjaśnić normatywny charakter faktów prawnych oraz jest spójna z ogólną formą wyjaśnienia.
