Opis:
Copper-based composites could be widely used in automotive, electronic or electrical industry due to their very promising thermal properties. In the present paper, Cu-AlN metal matrix composites with ceramic volume fractions between 0.1 and 0.4 were fabricated by hot pressing method in vacuum. Dependence of the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) and the thermal conductivity (TC) on the chemical composition of composites has been investigated. The measured values of the thermal expansion coefficient have been compared with the analytical models’ predictions. A numerical model based on FEAP 7.5 in 3D space has been used to evaluate the influence of the porosity on the thermal properties (thermal conductivity) of the composite. A fairly good correlation between the FEM results and the experimental measurements has been obtained.

Our efforts were focused on improving thermal stability of polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) through incorporation of new organically modified montmorillonite. The reactive organofilic montmorillonite (MMT-EA) was prepared by exchanging the interlayer inorganic cations in montmorillonite by a large excess of ethyl 2-aminobenzoate (EA). Organic modification can affect not only microstructures, but also the properties of the polymer - montmorillonite nanocomposites. In the next step, novel polyolefins/ organoclay nanocomposites were prepared by melt intercalation process. In order to obtain this new family of materials and enhance their properties very low filler level, from 1.5 to 5 wt.% was used. The dispersion of the montmorillonite layers in the polymers was characterized by using X-ray diffraction (XRD). The thermal properties and structure changes were studied by different scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Further studies indicated that the exfoliated clay modified with EA improved thermal stability of the PE and PP/MMT-EA nanocomposites.

Homogeneous Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/Carbon nanotube (CNT) composite has been prepared by solution casting method using gum acacia as a surfactant. CNT content in the composite was varied from 5-10 % by weight. The thermal properties of PVA/CNT composites were investigated by Thermo Gravimetric/Differential Thermal Analyzer (TG/DTA) and Thermo Mechanical Analyzer (TMA). TG/DTA results showed that higher thermal stability in higher percentage of CNT in the composites. The 10 % CNT containing PVA composite exhibit highest onset of melting, glass transition point and offset of melting temperature and the recoded values are 330.4K, 379K and 421.3K respectively. All of the result indicates that the developed PVA/CNT composite might be promising for use in solar cell application.

This paper presents the synthesis and characterization of new polymeric materials in form of composites. As a fillers, waste materials of inorganic origin (ash and silica gel), were used. In the synthesis of composites, two derivatives of bisphenol A (glycerolate diacrylate, and epoxy resin, Epidian® 5), were applied. The compositions were prepared with an increasing amount of fillers 0-40% w/w in both tested systems. Composites were analyzed using the thermogravimetric analysis (TG/DTG), which showed the influence of different fillers on their thermal properties. Moreover, the proper course of the polymerization reaction was confirmed by spectroscopic analysis (ATR/FT-IR). It has been shown that new resistant materials can be obtained, using cheap and waste materials, by simple synthesis which does not require monitoring of the reaction course or expensive polymerization initiators.

Opis:
In the present paper the structure and thermal properties of europium cerium oxides were investigated. The material for the research was obtained via solid state synthesis. The initial powders: ceria CeO2 and europia Eu2O3 were mixed in 1:1 mass ratio (non-stoichiometric proportion with the excess of CeO2) and milled. The sintering process was performed using high temperature vacuum press at 1350°C. Calorimetric analysis was conducted both for initial powders and milled mixture. The structure, phase composition and thermal diffusivity of obtained material were investigated in as-sintered condition. It was revealed that the obtained material was multi-phase. Non-stoichiometric phases including Ce0.5Eu0.5O1.75 with fluorite type structure and different lattice parameters were present. Thermal diffusivity decreased in the range from 25 to 900°C from 1.49 to 0.57 mm2 /s and then increased to 0.70 mm2 /s at 1400°C.

Opis:
Lightweight foamed concrete (LFC) is extremely permeable, and its thermal properties reduce with rising in the number of voids. In turn, to improve its thermal properties, the solid matrix of LFC can be adjusted by incorporating several natural fibers. The influence of sisal fiber in LFC was not investigated before in the current body of knowledge. Hence, there is some ambiguity considering the mechanism by which and the extent to which the sisal fiber can influence LFC thermal properties. Hence, this study concentrates on distinguishing the potential use of sisal fiber in LFC. The purpose of this research is to determine LFC's thermal characteristics when sisal fiber is added. Casting and testing of densities of 800 kg/m3 and 1600 kg/m3 were done. Various weight fractions were employed pertaining to sisal fiber, i.e., 0.15%, 0.30%, 0.45% and 0.60%. The components of thermal properties, which consist of specific heat, thermal conductivity as well as thermal diffusivity were evaluated. To get comparable results, we fixed the water to cement ratio as 0.45 while keeping constant the cement to sand ratio at 1:1.5. It was seen that optimum results were achieved with the addition of 0.45% of sisal fiber with regard to all the thermal characteristics regarded in this exploration. At 0.45% weight fraction about sisal fiber, maximum compaction was achieved with fibers as well as the cementitious matrix, which ensued in good mix uniformity. Beyond the optimum level pertaining to the presence of sisal fiber, it could be seen that fibers would agglomerate and exhibit non-uniform dispersion, which resulted in a decline with regards to the entire thermal characteristics assessed.

Tensile properties are studied to assess the influence of fiber weight. Room temperature cured epoxy was impregnated with jute/Sc in order to evaluate the performance of hybrid composites. Jute/Sc fibers are taken in the 1:1 weight ratios to suspend on epoxy resin with different fiber lengths such as 1, 2, 3 and 4 cm. The variations of aforementioned properties on hybrid composites with different fiber lengths have been studied. Significant improvement in tensile strengths of the jute/Sc hybrid composites has been observed by the alkali treatments. Thermal properties such as TGA and DSC are studied to investigate the influence of change in fibre length on treated and untreated hybrid composites in which 4 °C rise in decomposition temperature, 3 °C rise for glass transition temperature respectively.

The effects of electron-beam irradiation on mechanical and thermal properties were studied for two commercial multilayer structures of flexible food packaging. Both the laminated poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET)/ low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and the coextruded LDPE/polyamide(PA)/LDPE structures were irradiated up to 120 kGy using a 1.5 MeV electron beam accelerator, at room temperature in the presence of air. Mechanical properties showed significant changes (p < 0.05), specially in sealability that was severely affected. Changes in mechanical properties were discussed in relation to the eight day and the six month period after irradiation. In addition, the DSC analysis six months after treatment showed that the fusion enthalpy of the PET/LDPE structure components increase for the LDPE from 10 kGy and decrease for the PET up to 120 kGy (p < 0.05). On the other hand, the LDPE/PA6/ LDPE presented increase in the LDPE and PA up to 120 kGy, except for LDPE at 10 and 15 kGy and PA at 5 kGy doses (p < 0.05). The effects of irradiation were less severe for the LDPE/PA6/LDPE than for the PET/LDPE. The electron-beam irradiation did not show advantageous results that could be of interest for commercial applications for the film industry, but brings important information about the packaging behavior for food producers who may decide to use irradiation as a form of cold pasteurization of their packed products.

Glycidylazide polymer (GAP) has potential interest for the development of high-performance energetic propellants. Although GAP is a well-known and promising energetic polymer, propellants based on it suffer from poor mechanical and low-temperature properties. In order to improve the mechanical and thermal properties of GAP a promising idea would be the preparation of a tri-block copolymer of it with a polymer having good mechanical and thermal properties, such as polycaprolactone (PCL). In this work, we report a detailed investigation of the glass transition temperature (Tg) and viscosity of PCL-GAP-PCL samples incorporated with energetic plasticizers, BuNENA, TMETN, and BTTN. The results demonstrated that the Tg of PCL-GAP-PCL is influenced by the type of plasticizer. PCL-GAP-PCL was cured with TDI and a mixed curing system (IPDI/N100). The elastomer prepared with the mixing curing system showed excellent mechanical properties with 2.64 MPa and 138% elongation. The effects of the energetic plasticizers on the mechanical properties of the elastomer were investigated. Finally, the plasticized tri-block copolymer showed enhanced mechanical and thermal properties.

Opis:
In this work, the influence of halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) on the mechanical and thermal properties of the polylactic acid/polypropylene carbonate (PLA/PPC 70/30) blend was studied. The HNT was incorporated into the PLA/PPC blend by melt mixing. It was found that addition of 2-6 wt % HNT successfully improved the tensile and flexural strength as well as the flexural and Young’s moduli of PLA/PPC blend, due to the reinforcing effect. Although the elongation at break decreases with increasing HNT content, its value is much higher than that of pure PLA. Moreover, the addition of HNT did not affect the miscibility of PLA and PPC, since two glass transition temperatures were observed in the DSC thermograms. However, a higher content of HNT may improve the compatibility between PLA and PPC as evidenced by the lower difference between the glass transition temperature of PPC and PLA and reduced crystallinity resulting in higher tensile strength of nanocomposites.
W pracy zbadano wpływ nanorurek haloizytowych (HNTs) na właściwości mechaniczne i termiczne mieszaniny polikwas mlekowy/węglan polipropylenu (PLA/PPC 70/30). HNT wprowadzono do PLA/PPC poprzez mieszanie w stanie stopionym.
