Opis:
The language choices that teachers make in the language classroom have been found to influence the opportunities for learning given to learners (Seedhouse, 2004; Walsh, 2012; Waring, 2009, 2011). The present study expands on research addressing learner-initiated contributions (Garton, 2012; Jacknick, 2011; Waring, Reddington, & Tadic, 2016; Yataganbaba & Yıldırım, 2016) by demonstrating that opportunities for participation and learning can be promoted when teachers allow learners to expand and finish their overlapped turns. Audio recordings of lessons portraying language classroom interaction from three teachers in an adult foreign language classroom (EFL) setting were analyzed and discussed through conversation analysis (CA) methodology. Findings suggest that when teachers are able to navigate overlapping talk in such a way that provides interactional space for learners to complete their contributions, they demonstrate classroom interactional competence (Sert, 2015; Walsh, 2006). The present study contributes to the literature by addressing interactional features that increase interactional space, and an approach to teacher and learner talk that highlights CA’s methodological advantages in capturing the interactional nuances of classroom discourse.

The article discusses a number of fundamental glottodidactic issues relating mainly to the issue of recognition of English as a global language. The article observes that the mere suggestion that English is to be regarded as a global language is not a sufficient condition to consider it for this kind of language. First, what is to be to assessed is the precise answer to the question what one means while thinking about learning a global language, as well as what are (if any) the fundamental differences between learning this kind of language and learning a foreign/second language. The second part of the article is an attempt to answer such questions.

Opis:
This article explores the concept of teacher professionalism, focusing primarily on factors motivating teachers to pursue professional development within the framework of formal, organized teacher development programmes offered by educational institutions. Its major purpose is to contribute to a better understanding of motivational issues involved in teacher education, or teacher learning, as it is sometimes referred to. Its other purpose is to liven up a discussion concerning language teacher education as a life-long experience. The article consists of two parts: its theoretical sections focus on the notions of professionalism and a professional, together with the concepts of autonomy and reflection/reflective practice, which are crucial from the point of view of teacher development. Next, factors motivating teachers to continue their development both as professionals and as individuals are addressed. The second part presents and discusses results of a small-scale individual research project which yielded some interesting data pertaining to motivational issues involved in teacher learning.

The issue of an educational mistake in literature is not a new problem, some negative phenomena have been repeated for ages. The phenomenon of a mistake, with regard to its various involvements- psychological, social and normative, is difficult to unequivocally define. Mistakes in education (situational and those of attitudes) can have different characteristics, their sources of formation are complex and they mostly have internal or external character. The consequences of the tutor’s wrong behaviour is directly determined by its type, however almost always the situation of a mistake causes changes in the cognitive structures, in the structure of emotions and in the structure “ I”. The diagnostic criteria of mistakes in education must be related to society, culture and personal experiences of subjects of educational interaction. The research problem of surveys concerned the frequency of occurrence of a teacher’s mistakes in education in the opinions of secondary school students.

The world is constantly becoming more multicultural in the sense of positive coexistence of dissimilarities. Contemporary teachers live and work in multicultural communities – are they properly prepared for new work conditions? In this study the examined issues will be limited to those which seem most likely to provide chances for successful preparation of teachers for proper implementation of the assumptions of intercultural education. To a certain extent, they are significant issues and problems in teacher training in general, partially they concern training which enhances intercultural education. What becomes an important issue in this context is the search for a model/models of teacher education as well as indicating the competences the acquisition of which will enable teachers to successfully participate in the life of their own and many other communities.

In this paper I discuss three different ways in which we can refer to those we teach: as a learner, as a student or as a speaker. My interest is not in any aspect of teaching but in the question whether there can be such a thing as emancipatory education. Working with ideas from Jacques Rancière I offer the suggestion that emancipatory education can be characterised as education which starts from the assumption that all students can speak. It starts from the assumption, in other words, that students neither lack a capacity for speech, nor that they are producing noise. The idea of the student as a speaker is not offered as an empirical fact but as a different starting point for emancipatory education, one that positions equality at the beginning of education and not at its end.

With learning contexts globally promoting putting learners in the centre, it is no surprise that autonomous learning will gain ground in contemporary classrooms. As there is no learner autonomy without autonomous teachers, investigating instructors’ preferences about autonomous learning is necessary for more successful language education. The research assessed Georgian teachers’ viewpoints on fostering autonomous learning in EFL acquisition. The study employed a close-ended questionnaire completed by over 100 teachers. The analysis concludes that Georgian teachers associate obstacles with a lack of resources, technical problems, and class size, while challenges linked to teachers include lack of experience, limited development opportunities, and time management.

Although it constitutes a quite popular and effective system of foreign language teaching/learning, language tutoring seems to be disregarded in academic work as well as in teaching materials. Yet, a specific structure of tutoring offers an attractive field for the research that cannot be conducted in the context of group learning. Results of the research could not only enhance the current state of glottodidactic knowledge, but also extend the ethodological base, in which it is now futile to search for instruction on the individual work with the learner. The present article is thus an attempt to begin an academic discussion concerning language tutoring.

In this article I would like to look briefly at the background to the concept of enthusiasm, its evolution from earlier understandings in the domain of religion to its modern understandings as expressed by various lexicographic sources. This will lead me to the major focus of the article, which is the various applications of enthusiasm in education. Not surprisingly, there is a large body of empirical studies on teacher and learner enthusiasm and its contribution to successful teaching and learning. A selection of studies is presented here and their results are discussed. The empirical part of this article looks at my own qualitative study of pre-service EFL teachers’ narratives and their perceptions of teacher enthusiasm and its impact on teaching and learning success, as seen from their own perspective. In the concluding part I suggest how teacher training should incorporate ideas on teacher enthusiasm and strategies to deploy them as prospective weapons in preventing professional burnout in teachers. As Churchill said, “success is not final... Failure is not fatal... it´s the courage to continue that counts.” I strongly believe that it is enthusiasm that gives us courage to continue.

Building learner autonomy requires effective communication and cooperation between teachers and students with regard to teaching/learning goals and methods. In addition, critical reflection on the progress being made is needed. This paper aims to represent the voices on one side of this dialogue, by investigating the perceptions that Business English students at the University of Economics in Katowice have of the roles which ESP teachers should take. This study into learner autonomy sees the co-responsibility of learners for the outcomes of the teaching/learning process as a significant determinant of the development of autonomy. Besides providing an interesting insight into the needs and expectations of Business English students, the results may contribute to the discussion on the benefits of and problems related to the development of autonomy among young adults in tertiary education.

Interest in the effect of positive and negative emotions in foreign language acquisition has soared recently because of the positive psychology movement (Dewaele & MacIntyre, 2014, 2016; MacIntyre, Gregersen & Mercer, 2016). No work so far has been carried out on the differential effect of positive and negative emotions on foreign language performance. The current study investigates the effect of foreign language enjoyment (FLE) and foreign language classroom anxiety (FLCA) on foreign language performance in a group of 189 foreign language pupils in two London secondary schools and a group of 152 Saudi English as a foreign language learners and users of English in Saudi Arabia. Correlation analyses showed that the positive effect of FLE on performance was stronger than the negative effect of FLCA. In other words, FLE seems to matter slightly more than FLCA in foreign language (FL) performance. Qualitative material collected from the Saudi participants shed light on the causes of FLCA and FLE and how these shaped participants’ decisions to pursue or abandon the study of the FL.

Opis:
Communicative language teaching that has been popular since the mid-70s situates a learner in the centre of scientific and research attention. The consequence of that is the growing importance of learner’s autonomy during the process of teaching and learning a foreign language. On the other hand, a teacher is still an important element of the glottodidactic process – it is the teacher who is obliged to take care of the learner’s development and progress and to support him or her in it. That is, though, connected with the individual approach to teaching, especially in relation to some more demanding groups of school students. The problem of learner’s autonomy and of special educational needs is especially important for two school students groups that more and more often occur on the lessons of English, i.e. dyslectic students and the ones suffering from the Asperger syndrome. For both groups of students individual treatment and approach is crucial, but the specificity of both of them quite often goes beyond the knowledge a teacher, especially the young, non-experienced one, possesses.

In accordance with the assumptions of the sociologically grounded labelling theory, an individual’s self-perception and, consequently, their actions, might be influenced by words used to describe them. Also, in the context of education, including the field of foreign language learning, such a process of defining learners in a simplified way, has been proven to have profound consequences of psychological nature. The main purpose of the article is to outline the results of a study in which 37 teachers of English shared the stories of their most “difficult” students. The qualitative analysis of the gathered descriptions allowed the identification of some common features characteristic of, so-called, hopeless cases, among which motivation-related problems are the most often enumerated ones. Additionally, many teachers wrote about their struggles while teaching students with special educational needs. The views expressed by the participants of the study might help understand the way in which opinions about students are formulated as well as point to the need for significant changes to be made in the area of foreign language teacher education and training.

The present paper is a report on the author’s own teaching experiences and focuses on the creation of learning situations in a virtual environment. The main aim is to define the characteristics of a learning situation in such an environment. More precisely, the paper focuses on: (1) answering the question whether – and to what extent – current studies on the model of hybrid education provide the necessary information useful in developing the professional competence of teachers willing to use ICT tools in their work, and, (2) drawing conclusions about the author’s own teaching experiences, whose aim is to determine what types of actions on the part of the teacher, concerning on the one hand, the task’s scenario and, on the other hand, his or her intervention in a virtual environment, can contribute to learning. The article emphasizes the necessity of perceiving interaction in a virtual environment as a separate communicative situation which requires specific skills both on the part of the teacher and the learner.
