Opis:
Damage by herbivore grazing negatively influences the development of subsequent forest generations. Little is known about the long-term impacts of grazing and interactions between grazing and light conditions on sapling growth after the cessation of herbivory impact. In this study, Taxus baccata saplings were grown over a period of four years in artificial shading at 2, 8, 30 and 100% of full sunlight (described as initial light). These saplings were planted in fenced and unfenced plots in a mixed forest in Poland. After six years with no protection from grazing, deer pressure was eliminated by fencing. In this study, we analysed sapling growth and needle morphology five years after deer suppression. Overall, grazing had a negative significant impact on the growth rate and needle morphology of T. baccata saplings. Saplings damaged by herbivores had a height increment approximately one-third that of non-grazed saplings. The grazed yew saplings had a lower needle area and length and a higher specific leaf area (SLA) than non-grazed saplings. Initial and current light conditions did not influence tree growth rates and needle morphology. However, we found positive correlations between sapling height and both leaf area and leaf length and a negative correlation between sapling height and SLA. Browsed yews also had a greater tendency to form polycormic (multi-stemmed) individuals. Lower growth rates, smaller needles and polycormic stems indicate a strategy of “escaping” herbivory pressure even five years after elimination of deer pressure.

The concentration of Cd and Pb in leaves/needles, twigs, seeds and fruit coverings of: horse-chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum L.), yew-tree (Taxus baccata L.), European ash (Fraxinus excelsior L.), and in the soil at the base of the same trees was investigated. The ability of metal accumulation was determined in all investigated tree species as well as different partitioning in examined plant tissues. The lowest Pb concentration was found in fruit parts of all tree species: in seeds or fruit covering. The lowest Cd concentration in unpolluted regions was determined in leaves/needles or twigs. The highest Cd and Pb concentration in investigated tissues depends on the species and the pollution level of the place where plants were growing. The obtained results could be used to determine the most suitable organs for Pb and Cd biomonitoring in the environment.
Uzyskane dane mogą posłużyć do wytypowania organów przydatnych w biomonitoringu kadmu i ołowiu w środowisku.

Opis:
Basing on repeated analyses of vegetation of the ‘Cisy Staropolskie im. Leona Wyczółkowskiego’ reserve near Wierzchlas (N Poland) it was found that frequency of species characteristic for Querco−Fagetea association increased at the expense of species typical for acidophilous and wet sites (Vaccinio−Piceetea, Quercetea robori−petraeae and Alnetea glutinosae, Phragmitetea classes respectively). Yew population decreased in number by almost 30%, while in case of other species this rate amounted from 18 to 80%. This points to natural process of decrease in number of trees related with their growth and ageing. Sex structure of Taxus baccata population (only 29% of females) turned to be very unfavourable. Although yew seedlings occur in great number, they die in vast majority during the wintertime. Low temperature connected with over−shadowing are probably the main reason of such small survival rate.

Opis:
Taxus baccata L. has a scattered distribution and the decline of yew woodlands is observed across the entire species range. Passively protected populations in the central and northern part of their distribution are declining without human intervention. However, the establishment of new yew populations is observed in habitats that have been significantly transformed by humans. The following question need to be answered: why do yews find better in environmental conditions that have been strongly modified by humans compared to natural systems? The Quaternary history might be the key to understand the current yew situation. As suggested by palaeobotanical studies, pollen of T. baccata was observed at optima of the interglacials, but in subsequent periods, it has been displaced by that of other shade-tolerant species. Pollen diagrams indicate that after the last glaciation, the yew did not appear earlier than other shade-tolerant species and did not have the opportunity to become common in occurrence, as in previous interglacial periods. As a result, yews occur only as relict populations within environmental islands where the competition with other shade-tolerant species is low. The negative human impact on yew is well-documented, but limitations resulting from the biology of this species are also very important. T. baccata is a species whose current scattered distribution may explain the Quaternary history. Yew situation is better in artificial conditions because people reduce competition from other trees species and deer pressure. Possible positive impact of human on yew distribution in the past is also discussed. The current biological condition of this species suggests the need for active protection.

Genetic variability of yew (Taxus baccata L.) trees in seven nature reserves (Jasień, Czarne Człuchowskie, Choczewo, Wierzchlas, Wirty, Rokita and Mogilno/Stary Sącz) in Poland was investigated by RAPD methods. The results showed high genetic differences between populations ranging from 22.7% among the population of Stary Sącz and hedge (+) to 86.1% between Wierzchlas and Rokita (+). Based on the results of RAPD analyses, the studied populations were divided into three groups of similarity. The first include Jasień and Choczewo the populations, the second Rokita (+), hedge (–) and Stary Sącz, and the third remaining populations. High level of genetic diversity was showed among the studied populations, is essential to the adaptability of the population of yew. This theoretically increases the chances of survival species thanks to the possibility of passing to preferred combinations of genes to the future generations.

Opis:
Yew is a coniferous, evergreen, dioecious species. The objective of the study was to present a comprehensive characteristic of changes occurring throughout the year in terms of the content of photosynthetic pigments and related compounds in the needles of yew, depending on the sex of individuals and age of needles. Eight compounds, particularly chlorophyll a (Chl a), chlorophyll b (Chl b), carotenoids (Car), protoporphyrin IX (PPIX), magnesium protoporphyrin IX (MgPPIX), protochlorophyllide (Pchlide), chlorophyllide a (Chlide a), and chlorophyllide b (Chlide b), were subjected to quantitative analysis. Based on the several parameters under study, significant differences between male and female individuals were observed, while most commonly, the largest differences were reported in the autumn and winter period. They were related to the content of Chl a, Chl b and Chl/Car ratio. The remaining compounds showed no significant differences according to the sex and were slightly different only in single periods. For all the studied parameters except for Chl/Car ratio, interaction between sampling dates and sex was not statistically significant. Significant differences between the needles of different age were observed only in terms of the content of Chl b, MgPPIX, Pchlide, Chlide b, and Chl a/b ratio, and these differences were always caused by the current-year needles.

In the present study, the induction of callus, callus biomass growth and the yield of taxol were investigated in Taxus wallichiana. This is the first report of a quantification study of taxol in in vitro grown tissues of Taxus obtained from Jammu and Kashmir provinces, India. For callus induction, three different explant types (leaf, cone and stem) were cultured in media supplemented with 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) and 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP). The stem was most responsive to callusing, and the maximum callus induction frequency of 71.5% was noted on medium amended with 2.0 mg/l 2,4-D. The medium amended with 2,4-D and ascorbic acid (AA) showed better callus growth and the maximum biomass (0.082 g, fresh weight). The yield of taxol was quantified in the callus grown on a medium supplemented with different plant growth regulators (PGRs) by using high-performance thin layer chromatography (HPTLC). The taxol yield was maximum (1.053 μg/g dry weight) in 2,4-D-stimulated callus, followed by callus treated with NAA in which 0.896 μg/g dry weight taxol was detected. The maximum taxol yield (56.6%) was obtained in the callus grown on the medium amended with 2,4-D, and a 33.3% increased yield was noted on the NAA-supplemented medium. As a stress marker, the activities of the antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) and the level of proline were measured in an auxin (2,4-D and NAA)-supplemented medium. The callus grown on the 2,4-D-supplemented medium had high levels of SOD (3.91 min-1 * mg-1 protein), APX (1.61 min -1 * mg-1 protein) and proline (6.57 mg/g), thus suggesting a higher stress level; the callus grown on the NAA-supplemented medium had slightly lower levels of SOD and APX enzyme activities and proline content (3.01 min-1 * mg -1 protein, 1.04 min-1 * mg -1 protein and 5.90 mg/g, respectively). BAP had little influence on stress parameters. The present study thus indicates a good taxol yield in the callus cultured in 2,4-D, which functioned as a signalling element and a stressor. The taxol yield in response to PGRs was analysed in in vitro cultivated tissues.

Opis:
European yew (Taxus baccata L.) is a rare species, but is the focus of great interest because of the species recovery attempts and its use in medicine. The aim of this study was to determine the optimum conditions for the development of the young generation of this species. Four-year old yew seedlings were grown under artificial light reduction: 2, 8, and 30%, as well as in full light. The seedlings were then planted in natural conditions in fenced and unfenced areas. The results of six years field studies indicated that the greatest impact on survival was shown by the light conditions from the period before planting under the canopy of trees. Seedlings from the 2 and 8% of light showed the greatest mortality. The reason was the sudden change in light conditions, because at the time of planting (early spring), there was no reduction of light under deciduous trees. Almost all of the unfenced yew seedlings were grazed by deer, but yew survival in the unfenced group was surprisingly high despite the permanent grazing. This was explained by the high resistance of yew to cutting and the protection of seedlings by a dense layer of Rubus. The results indicated that yew trees require protection against animals for normal development, even if animals have not previously had contact with Taxus and that yew seedlings are very sensitive to sudden changes in light. Both conclusions can be applied in the development of natural and artificial regeneration of European yew and other endangered plants.

The aim of the study was to recognise the structure (sex, height, diameter) and vitality of European yew (Taxus baccata L.) population in the ‘Cisy nad Liswartą' reserve (50°46'27,12"N 18°47'11,86"E). The field investigations were performed in years 2005−2009. We measured diameter at breast height, diameter at root collar and height of all yews in the reserve. Sex of the individuals was determined as well as their health condition was classified into one of five classes. Total number of life and dead yew specimens (with height over 0,5 m) accounted to 466. Majority of the population grew in dense stands (stand density index 0.5−0.7). Sex was described for 55% of the population. Number of female individuals was 142 (30%) and male 116 (25%). Lack of or small crown transparency was found for 30% of life yew trees. The share of high transparency crowns equalled 11%. Damage caused by the game (especially deer) was older than 10 years and found for 42% life trees. Seedlings occurred under the canopy of 47 mature trees (10% of population). 15 relevés were established in the investigated stands. Natural regeneration of yew was found on 11 of them. 5 characterised with small number of yew seedlings. The greatest number of seedlings equalled 200 individuals. It was found that the number of yews higher than 0.5 m decreased in comparison to the previous surveys. Female and male yew trees occurred in the reserve, so the generative breeding is possible. Health condition of the analysed yew population is moderate. Problems with survival of the seedlings was observed. The special treatments should be recommended – cutting of some competitors to give more light for natural regeneration and fencing the greater number of yew seedlings.

The aim of the investigations was determination the reasons of dying down of needles and branches of common yew (Taxus baccata L.) in the park collection of Botanic Garden of Jagiellonian University in Cracow. The disease changes of infectious nature were observed on the examined plants’ parts. The changes’appearance, its location and extent were described in details. At fi rst the spots were brown colour with distinct hem. Then the needle and branch tissues were dying down. From end of May to July mass falling down of infesteted needles was observed. Mycological analysis of diseased tissues showed 34 fungi species. To the dominant species belonged: Alternaria alternata, Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, Fusarium spp., Pestalotiopsis guepinii, Phomopsis juniperivora and Zythiostroma pinastri. Common yew pathogens: Phomopsis juniperivora and Sclerophoma pityophila were found among the isolated fungi.
Badania miały na celu określenie przyczyn zamierania igieł i gałązek cisa pospolitego (Taxus baccata L.) w kolekcji Ogrodu Botanicznego UJ w Krakowie. Na badanych częściach roślin występowały zmiany chorobowe o charakterze infekcyjnym. Opisywano szczegółowo ich wygląd, zlokalizowanie i zasięg. Początkowo były to plamy brązowawo zabarwione z wyraźną obwódką. Następnie tkanki igieł i gałązek zamierały. Obserwowano też masowe opadanie porażonych igieł w okresie od końca maja do lipca. Przeprowadzona analiza mikologiczna chorych tkanek wykazała w nich obecność 34 gatunków grzybów, wśród których dominowały: Alternaria alternata, Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, Fusarium spp., Pestalotiopsis guepinii, Phomopsis juniperivora oraz Zythiostroma pinastri. W populacji wyizolowanych grzybów stwierdzono obecność patogenów cisa pospolitego, tj.: Phomopsis juniperivora i Sclerophoma pityophila.

It is assumed that thrushes (Turdidae) are primarily responsible for regeneration in the under canopy category (endozoochoria) and nuthatches (Sitta europea L.) in the near trunk category (synzoochoria). Under canopy regeneration exists in all size classes while near the trunk there is a distinct decline in the number of yew plants with increase in size (age) suggesting that conditions for further development there are less favourable. Nutchatches disperse yew seeds in the vicinity of mother plants, for cleaning them preferring trees to shrubs and particularly trees with smooth bark trunks (Fagus, Carpinus), however yew survival near the trunk is better under conifers. Thrushes disperse yew seed over wider areas. Survival of yews is best under loose canopies, in moderate shade, on drier well draining, low pH, soils.

The present paper describes the current situation of yews in the Cisowy Jar Reserve: number, their state of health, height and diameter structure, and the sex ratio. In the result only 25 yews were found. Their state of health was relatively good, but many yews that grew on very heavily shaded stands were characterized by little height accretion and greater leaf reduction than those growing on more sunny positions. There is no continuity of population. No specimens in the height range between 51-100 cm were found. Sparse seedlings die in first years after appearing. Active human help is necessary to protect and to reconstruct the yew population in the reserve.

The natural population of yew in the Knyazhdvir Nature Reserve was described and its status has been analyzed. It was stated that more than 22 000 specimens of yew grow there and it is the most numerous population of the species in Ukraine. The most important factor for Taxus baccata occurrence there are the presence of calcium carbonate and humidity of the soils. The height and diameter structures of the population indicate that the population is in progress. The largest specimens in 1976 were of 12 m high and of 30 cm dbh. The natural regeneration is satisfactory. The increment of height of the yew was greater in the conditions of less density of the canopy of beech-fir stand under which the species grows.

Taxus baccata L. is a rare species threatenedwith extinction in Greece, as in other parts of Europe. This paper deals with the ecological status of the species in the area of NE Chalkidiki northern Greece, where the species appears in one of the greatest populations of the country. Site, standand yew population characteristics were studied in the area that species occupies. Eleven sample plots were marked, and on each plot, the height and diameter at breast height (DBH) were measured for all yew trees, as well as for all the individuals of the rest tree species, with diameter at breast height greater than 4 cm. Tree vitality of all trees was also estimated according to IUFRO classification. Yew radial growth was studied using tree-ring analysis. Tree natural regeneration was investigated within subplots of different dimensions and according to two height classes. Results showed that yew population occurs in stands dominated by beech, presenting a mean density of 301 trees per hectare, with a total population of 430 trees with DBH above 4 cm. It forms the secondary stand, and dominates in the stand understorey, accompanied with Fagus sylvatica and Ilex aquifolium, while it appears rarely in the overstorey. Yew tree vitality was foundto be quite high, and significantly higher than that of beech. Radial growth of the sampled trees follows a slow and constant annual increment gradually decreasing by tree age. Yew natural regeneration was foundto be relatively low, 1341.8 individuals (seedlings and saplings up to 1 m) per hectare. Management and in situ conservation of the species in the area should focus on species protection measures, andon specific silvicultural treatments for creating favourable conditions for species growth.

Opis:
Taxus baccata L. is a rare and endangered dioecious species in Europe. Species of this mating system are considered to be the most vulnerable to extinction. It is believed that one reason for this state may be the uneven reproductive effort and different habitat requirements of the two sexes. Silver fir and European yew have very similar ecological requirements, but fir is a monoecious species. The aim of this study was to compare the growth rate andthe effect of precipitation andtemperature on the annual tree-ring width of silver fir and both sexes of European yew. The study site was the Knyazhdvir reserve in western Ukraine, located near the limit of the geographical range of both species. Knyazhdvir reserve is the site of one of the last yew populations in Europe with a large number of individuals (about 15,000 individuals above 1.3 m height) growing alongside fir.Woodsamples were taken from 15 male and15 female specimens of T. baccata andfrom 15 specimens of A. alba and were subjected to a standard dendrochronological procedure. The results showed high positive correlation between the temperatures in February andMarch andthe tree-ring width in the studied species and genders. The response of annual tree-ring width to the examined climatic factors was relatively similar in yew andfir. However slight differences were foundbetween males andfemales of T. baccata. The growth rate decreased more rapidly in females compared to males, probably following sexual maturation. Precipitation in April hada positive effect on firs andfemale yews, but not on male yews. This confirms earlier reports of the requirement of female specimens of dioecious species for a higher humidity than male individuals.

Opis:
English yew is rare and endangered dioecious species. Research on regeneration processes of endangered taxa is important to understand the mechanisms allowing a species to survive under several ecological scenarios, to predict future distribution shifts, to achieve best management practices and conservation policies. Our investigation was focusing on one of the oldest yew population in Europe, in Foresta Umbra in Italy. The main aim of this study was to understand spatial regeneration processes and dynamics related with parent trees’ sex distribution. Geostatistical analysis showed that seedlings occur in patches avoiding direct competition with adult yews. Negative relationship between regeneration and yew density and basal area was found. A general model for the reproductive ecology is proposed: females are less competitive and more environmentally demanding than males, because of their reproductive effort. Indeed, male and female fitness responds differently across environmental gradients, thus favouring spatial segregation of seedlings. Understanding the yew’s adaptive effectiveness is essential to ensure the conservation of existing populations, and encourage the species’ resilience into areas where yew is endangered.

The subject of this paper is a stand of yew trees growing in Purda Leśna forest range (Wipsowo Forest District, Warmińsko-Mazurskie Voivodeship), localized near the eastern border of the species’ range. In total 25 individuals of T. baccata from this locality were first described, measured and mapped in 1958. After over 50 years, 19 remaining trees were measured and described again, which gave the opportunity to investigate the growth dynamic and changes in health and condition of the yew trees. This paper compares the results of both measurements and observations. The research was done at the end of August 2010 during a student scientific camp organised by the Institute of Forest Sciences, Łódź University.

English yew (Taxus baccata L.) is a rare tree species in Austria and gene conservation forests reserves are used to maintain English yew populations by silvicultural treatments. This paper describes the current situation of an English yew population at “Stiwollgraben”in Austria with regard to stand structure, vitality and natural regeneration. The area is one of the most important sites in Austria as it consists of 2236 yews. The vitality condition of the yew is very good, and more than 79% of the yews have been assessed as very vital to vital. The potentiality for natural regeneration (13019 one-year seedlings ha–1) is very high, but not all height classes are represented. This indicates a high survival ability of English yew at this site. Three different treatment strategies are described to maintain the yew population. The future effects of these treatments are discussed in the light of the environmental requirements of English yew.

In the last few years on old yew trees growing in the parks and gardens extensive disease symptoms were observed on leaves, indicating affection with pathogenic microorganisms. The causal factor was the presence of a fungal pathogen, Pestalotiopsis funerea. Physiological responses involving the oxidative stress, i. e. superoxide anion and hydrogen peroxide levels, and the superoxide dismutase were analyzed as an element of a plant defense mechanism. Diseased leaves from plants growing under sunny and shaded conditions, from May to July, were investigated. The increased generation of superoxide anion-radicals and hydrogen peroxide were observed in the leaves with disease symptoms simultaneously with the activation of superoxide dismutase, which may indicate the induction of host defense response to the P. funerea.

The study analyses the spatial distribution of European yew and its co−occurrence with other trees or different individuals of the species. The study was conducted in the ‘Cisy nad Liswartą' nature reserve (50°46'27.12"N, 18°47'11.86"E). Data was collected in the whole reserve as well as on three 40×40 m study plots. The selected plots varied in terms of yew density, stand species composition and soil humidity. Study plots were divided into 16 squares (10×10 m). Ripley's K functions were used to examine spatial patterns of yew and other tree species populations. The distribution of all trees was random in the reserve. However, distribution of yew population was clumped. Yew preferred sites close to the creeks. Significant clustering of yew trees at distances up to 60−180 m was found. Distribution of yew on plot II was random, while clumped on plots I and III. The co−occurrence of yew and other tree species was random on plot I. Nevertheless, the positive correlation was found for yew and other tree species at the scale of 13−19 m and negative correlation at the distance 0−4 m. Co−occurrence of yew and other tree species was random on plot III as well. Negative correlation was found for thin yew and spruce at the distance of 8 m on plot I. Positive correlations were noticed for yew and other tree species, yew and sycamore at the distance 16 m on plot II. Negative correlations at the distance 18 m were achieved on plot III for: yew and alder, large yew and alder, yew and other tree species of diameter 15−35 cm. Yew grows on higher places, on small islands. The competition between spruce and yew (negative correlation) was the consequence of light and humidity demand of both tree species. The negative correlation between yews and medium alders on longer distance was the result of light competition.

The genetic variation is considered to be a key factor for long−term survival of the species. The recognition of the existing genetic diversity is the preliminary phase in development of an effective strategy for conservation of forest tree species gene pools. Taxus baccata L. with a wide but scattered distribution in Europe is an example of rare and endangered species that needs both ex situ and in situ protection. The increase in fragmentation and isolation of populations and reduction in effective population size can cause erosion of the gene pool through increased genetic drift, increased inbreeding, reduced gene flow and decreased migration rate. As a result, local populations may be responsible for the loss of genetic variation, hence a decrease in their viability and adaptability. A few genetic analyses based on isozymes and DNA markers indicate that the yew, both in Poland and in other regions of Europe, is characterized by high levels of genetic variation within populations and moderate genetic differentiation between populations.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to evaluate the development of common yew, Taxus baccata L., with respect to canopy openness. The plants were growing in ex-situ conservation plantations (established in 2008) in the understory of different tree species. Eleven forest plantations belonging to the following five forest districts were inventoried: Rokita, Baligród, Kołaczyce, Międzylesie and Henryków. In each plantation, the height and height increment of 200 yews were measured and gap light transmission indices were determined. The canopy species affecting yew growth most significantly were oak (Quercus sp.) and Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.), followed by Norway spruce (Picea abies Karst.), silver fir (Abies alba L.) and European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.). The most favorable development of yew occurred at 30% canopy openness. An increasing light transmission index correlated with a decrease in the proportion of treelike yews. An insufficient amount of light resulted in a low height increment of yews growing under the canopy and an extended period of direct competition of yews with herbaceous species.

Opis:
The paper presents the stand structure in the "Zdroje" common yew nature reserve in Szczecin. In 2006 the stand was built by 1848 trees that belonged to 14 species. Scots pine was the most numerous species (1067 trees). There were also 533 common yews. The other species were represented by 1−76 specimens. The diameter structure of six the most important species as well as the height structure of a common yew were analysed. Changes in the height structure of a common yew over 28 years were presented as well. No natural regeneration of common yew was observed.

Opis:
The article presents the excerpts of the Warta Act (1423) that concern forest protection. Interpretation of the Act's provisions in terms of the yew protection was performed in the connection to the political and economic situation of that time. It was demonstrated that the prohibition on the yew felling was connected to the fact of protection against intensive export of yew timber to the Western Europe and the lack of resources for own purposes, and therefore was not related directly to the nature protection itself.

Opis:
The effect of light conditions on the accumulation of phenolic compounds was investigated in the needles of one-year and two-year old shoots, collected from perennial specimens of common yew (Taxus baccata L.), American arborvitae (Thuja occidentalis L.) and common juniper (Juniperus communis L.), growing in an urban garden. The content of total phenols and flavones was partially related to the light requirement or light tolerance of conifer tree. In Taxus needles, a shade-loving species, higher accumulation of phenolic metabolites was observed under shaded condition (in two-year old shoots) and was linked with the growth intensity in spring. In Thuja and particularly in Juniperus, the level of phenolics was related to the insolation intensity, probably so as a part of the adaptation mechanism.

Opis:
The aim of these studies was to estimate the enzymatic activity and chemical properties of soils of Taxus baccata L. stands in selected forest reserves as well as in managed forest stands that do not belong to reserves. Furthermore, I compared the soil fertility of both types of forest stand using a biochemical soil quality indicator. The studies were conducted in the following reserves: “Bogdanieckie Cisy”, “Cisy Rokickie”, “Cisy Tychowskie”, “Cisy w Czarnem”, as well as in managed forest stands with the same soil and habitat type as the above-mentioned reserves. Analyses showed a lower activity of urease, asparaginase, acid phosphatase and dehydrogenase in soils of the managed forests than in soils of the reserves. The soil nutrient availability given by the total organic carbon, nitrogen, and alkaline cation content as well as soil sorption capacity were significantly lower outside the forest reserves. Chemical and biochemical parameters were used to calculate a biochemical index of soil fertility. The index was higher for soil in forest reserves than for soil in managed forest stands located outside reserves. This result held true regardless of the biochemical parameters used in the calculation. As has been shown in previous studies on protected areas with no cultivation that are largely influenced by natural processes, biochemical indices can be very useful for comparative analyses aiming at estimating soil quality or the reaction of soil to external factors, both natural and anthropogenic.
