The article concers a discussion about Little Black Stories for Little White Children [Petits contes nègres pour les enfants des blancs] (1928) renewed in 2018 by the publisher Gallimard Jeunesse. Cendrars was an artist who influenced the French art movements of the 1920s and ‘30s. He was also fascinated with Black Africa. His collection of African child folk tales, Little Black Stories for Little White Children, was ground-breaking in its sympathetic and non-racist respect for African folk culture. In spite of Cendrars’ attitude, expressed in personal life and in his works, Little Black Stories was accused of racism and negrophobia when a new edittion ocurred in 2018. This paper proposes an afterthought about these accusations.

Sayings Thales preserved in the writings of Aristotle, who relies on the tradition. Noteworthy is the fact that Aristotle did not mention any work of Thales, and when he examines his views, based as he says on the tradition. Kirk and Raven extensively analyzing the writings of Thales did not come to no decision, saying that existed in the ancient belief that all of the seven sages laid the rather maxims, which makes it very difficult test. It's likely that there were some advice Thales for sailors in written form, but it is unclear whether he wrote them himself or someone else. It is also difficult to decide what meaning would the existence of a guide for sailors by the Thales for its cosmological views, it is difficult to suppose that someone taught his metaphysical views in a work of this kind. Seneca, Plutarch, Diogenes, Cicero essentially repeated the words of Aristotle does not provide anything new.

Opis:
The characteristic features of Silesian fairy tales are their democratic nature and ideological layer, both of which are obviously a result of the complicated history of this region (Germanization, social exploitation of the common people). Understandably, young readers are not likely to find these political contexts and nuances of interest as they expect fairy tales to offer an engaging plot full of adventures, play and even humor. This causes the fairy tale to become affiliated with other folk genres (e.g. the legend) or the historical novel. These links are especially conspicuous in making the space, time and characters very concrete: the character has a name and performs the profession characteristic of this geographical region. The traditional fairy tale refers to an undefined time and place and leaves the charter considerably undefined. The authors of Silesian tales do not always follow the rules of the genre closely. They refer to folkloristic, regional, mythical and religious sources coming from ancient times until today. They also use international tropes and motifs (the lost princess, the dragon, the magician’s apprentice, the beauty and the beast, the prince transformed into an animal, magical objects), which they imbue with the local color for educational purposes and, perhaps, to meet the young reader’s expectations.   
Charakterystyczną cechą śląskich baśni jest jej demokratyzm i ideologiczne nacechowanie, zrozumiałe ze względu na zawiłą historię tego regionu ( germanizacja, wyzysk społeczny ludu). Oczywiście, dla młodego czytelnika polityczne uwikłania i niuanse nie są istotne. Od baśni oczekuje atrakcyjnej fabuły, pełnej przygód, zabawy a nawet humoru. To sprawia, że wchodzi ona w koneksje z innymi folklorystycznymi formami, np. podaniem, legendą, a nawet powieścią historyczną. Owe związki widoczne są zwłaszcza w sposobach konkretyzowania przestrzeni i czasu akcji oraz bohatera, który posiada imię, wykonuje typowy dla tego obszaru geograficznego zawód. Tradycyjna baśń wskazuje na bliżej nieokreślone miejsce i czas, nie precyzuje, kim jest bohater. Autorzy baśni śląskich nie zawsze ściśle przestrzegają reguł gatunku, natomiast odwołują się do źródeł folklorystycznych, regionalnych, mitologicznych, religijnych (począwszy od starożytności po współczesność), wykorzystują w swych opowieściach międzynarodowe wątki i motywy (zaginionej królewny, smoka, ucznia czarnoksiężnika, pięknej i bestii, królewicza zaklętego w zwierzę, magicznych przedmiotów), którym nadają lokalny koloryt, zgodnie z wychowawczymi założeniami i może oczekiwaniami dziecka.

Microtoponyms as a way of creating folk cultural places – the approach of linguistic anthropologyThe paper deals with selected issues of linguistic anthropology with the purpose to examine a few theoretical assumptions of its methodology, taking into account Keith H. Basso’s study on the creation of cultural places as a result of linguistic activity. The research is based on the empirical material obtained from Polish native speakers, namely, folk tales of the residents of the Augustów County. Mikrotoponimy jako sposób kreowania ludowych miejsc kulturowych – podejście antropologii lingwistycznejTematyka artykułu dotyczy wybranych zagadnień antropologii lingwistycznej. Celem opracowania jest rekonesans głównych założeń metodologicznych antropologii języka z uwzględnieniem badań Keitha H. Basso z zakresu „tworzenia miejsc kulturowych” w rezultacie działalności językowej. Jako materiał empiryczny wykorzystano wypowiedzi polskich natywnych użytkowników języka – opowieści etniczne mieszkańców powiatu augustowskiego.

Vernon Lee, pseudonym of the writer Violet Paget (1856-1935), was born in France, daughter of a Polish refugee. After having chosen Tuscany as her new homeland, she began composing several of historical, artistic, essayistic and literary works. Mostly important, among the narrative, are the Fantastic Stories and Ghostly Tales where landscapes and characters of ancient Italian history are combined with memories of her origin country. Polish people are the main characters of the “noir” tales “Amour Dure” and “The Legend of Madame Krasinska”, both of 1892.

The article discusses the methods used to translate phrasemes in the Kashubian version of the book Baśnie. Brawãdë by Jan Drzeżdżon. The translator, Roman Drzeżdżon, was unable to find any equivalent phrasemes in the target language. He translated them literally or described their meaning. Moreover, he also used the compensation strategy and introduced phrasemes in places where they were absent in the original.

The article is devoted to the reconstruction of Snow White myth in contemporary culture in the relation to the changing concepts of femininity and masculinity. The Author takes into account several contexts of this issue. First, it can be understood in the terms of patriarchal power over women’s identity and body. Also, the author analyses the Snow White in a light of girl’s socialization into passive roles. In the article feminist interpretation of Snow White are also reconstructed. The different versions of Snow White fable are confronted with the various kinds of relations between women and men in contemporary society.

Opis:
The aim of the article is to present meanings associated with fairy tale places by teacher candidates. The research data came from interviews with 57 early childhood pedagogy students, analysed through a qualitative method. The competences of candidates for teachers in perceiving the symbolism of places, wandering, world layout, reveal not only the level of cultural and literary knowledge (because they are a “showcase” of previous school experiences of fairy-tale themed lessons), but also indicate their future strategies for designing children’s activity based on fairy tales. These strategies may turn out to be so durable and resistant to change that they might survive university literary education and remain the starting point for students’ teaching practice. The research shows that the fairy tale can remain in them as the starting point for fun or a “background” for science, mathematics and language.

When I came to Krakow for the first time several years ago and tried to get some information about the Jewish Krakow, among the first-hand information I was offered in the bookshops were a few small booklets with legends about the Jews in this town. This is nothing special, for wherever one goes as a tourist one gets the same genre of literature: local legends and tales. It seems, therefore, that the popular legends indeed offer the first-hand information about the specific climate and the self-estimation of the inhabitants at a specific place. It is obviously the tales of a city that infuse life to its stones and places more than all exact historical data one can gather. The legend gives, so to speak, a short-hand résumé of the most typical and central features as well as the spirit of a place.

Hans Christian Andersen in Polish literary space, differently than in Danish, remains as a writer “packed into a child recipient”. In the new curriculum Andersen’s tales are on the compulsory reading list for the first stage of education (grades 1–3). Such early contact with the Danish writer’s works results in restricted perception of them. It would be justified to offer Andersen’s text to older recipients. Enculturative messages at the time of writing the works of the famous writer were definitely more unambiguous. The Victorian upbringing model assigned socially expected roles to women and men. Today, the paradigm of femininity and masculinity constitutes a conglomerate of traditional and egalitarian patterns of behaviour (gender roles). The advantage of the more pronounced (in reference to traditional tales) female creations in the works of Andersen tells us to turn into the female recipient. Patterns instilled into the readers by means of the well-known works of Andersen have been evaluated, to a greater extent, as negative or stereotypical, fitting into the old-fashioned upbringing model, harmful. The article attempts to verify some of the research positions and tries to determine what cultural messages send Andersen’s works in the scope of enculturative patterns for girls.

The paper analyses figurative applications of phrases containing words connected with human seeing (e.g. the verbs see, look, espy, nouns like sight, look, eye and adjectives such as blynd). It shows the motivation for metaphoric expressions used by Chaucer to express his thoughts and visions in a most vivid and precise way and their further development in the language system. The analysis is based on the data obtained from Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales (Ellesmere MS), the Oxford English Dictionary online and the Middle English Dictionary. As regards its theoretical basis it refers to Lakoff–Johnson’s theory of cognitive metaphor.

This essay aims at analysing and illustrating a segment of the post-Soviet short fiction of the contemporary Russian writer Vladimir Tuchkov. It specifically discusses his collection of very short stories And he earned many dollars…: New Russian fairy-tales. These short stories exemplify many characteristics of Tuchkov’s oeuvre more generally. The discussion analyses the satirical contents of these miniature fictions, which the author places in the tradition of the Russian classics and of Russian folklore, within the theoretical context of parody, pastiche, intertextuality, and folklore. Tuchkov’s short narratives create a de-familiarised, quasi-mythological space where pre-modern, Soviet, and post-Soviet times converge. This results in the critical, satirical foregrounding of certain continuities in Russian culture, society, and mentality throughout the centuries despite the enormous political and social change, which it has experienced, as much as constituting, like Russia’s traditional fables, a critical and satirical engagement with contemporary social reality in Russia. The contribution examines the specific intertextuality with a satirical folkloristic genre as a literary expression, which reverberates with a post-Soviet readership, given its inherent concern with social structures. It is suggested that the employment of these concepts and literary forms in this combination serves to reinforce their overall effect of creating a hyperbolised, satirical representation of social reality.
