    Sociopragmatics vs. Translation Studies: Interactional Pragmatic Operators as Translation Problem This paper focuses on the challenges posed by the translation of Spanish interactional pragmatic operators (hombre, mujer, vamos, venga, mira, oye, …), who cannot be perceived exclusively as the so-called discursive support. After some theoretical considerations concerning the theory of communicational ethos and its impact on Sociopragmatics and Translation Studies, there is a reference to the solutions adopted by selected Polish translators. The functional analysis indicates that the interactional pragmatics operators are in many cases an empathic sign of involvement in the verbal interaction and at the same time a stimulating routine which perfectly fits the model of the ethos of closeness and solidarity among interlocutors.

    The case study deals with the fortunes of translation equivalents of the words ἀφεδρών//secessus (in Matthew 15,17 and Mark 7,19) and γυμνός//nudus (in John 21,7) in the Czech Biblical tradition. The paper presents the material from almost fifty Czech translations (from the end of the 13th century to this day) and shows that the expressions (notions) draught, toilet and naked disappear in certain moments and are missing in most of the translations. The author tries to demonstrate in his analyses and interpretations when, under which circumstances and why there was this specific secondary tabooization that itself (slightly) disturbs the taboo of the inviolability of the content of the sacred text.

    Wielu badaczy wskazuje transfer nazw własnych jako jedną z trudności przekładu. Niniejsza praca dotyczy translacji imion w dwudziestu jeden przekładach baśni Rumpelstilzchen spod pióra braci Grimm. Analizie zostały poddane angielskie, brazylijskie, polskie, tureckie oraz japońskie wydania baśni napisanej pierwotnie w języku niemieckim. Praca skupia się na analizie prawdziwego imienia tytułowego skrzata oraz imion wymienianych przez baśniową królową. Artykuł zawiera pięć analiz opisujących onomastyczne aspekty przekładu oraz zastosowane techniki tłumaczeniowe. Wyniki wskazują na to, że podejście tłumaczy do przekładu imion było różnorodne na przestrzeni lat oraz wydań. Najczęściej wykorzystywanymi technikami były zamiana oraz transkrypcja, a ich bogactwo jest szczególnie widoczne w podejściu do przekładu powszechnych imion, np. Cunz i Heinz.

    The aim of this paper is to present current status of translatorics, including its subject and main goals. The paper is a review of my past views on translatorics, published in numerous papers and monographs since 1973, in comparison to my current position, based on long-term research. The term ‘translatorics’ was mentioned first time by myself in the conference monograph, published in 1981. Since then, my scientific work was focused and aimed to study the subject, goals, characteristics, and important discrepancies between the discipline, which I called ‘translatorics’ and other, apparently, similar ones: ‘traductology’, ‘translation studies’, ‘translatology’, ‘translation’ and ‘the theory of translation’ respectively.

    Celem artykułu jest analiza podstawowej chińskiej terminologii prawnej i prawniczej związanej z prawem rzeczowym przetłumaczenie badanych terminów na język polski. Materiał badawczy stanowiła księga druga polskiego Kodeksu cywilnego z 1964 r. („Własność i inne prawa rzeczowe”) oraz chińska Ustawa o prawach rzeczowych z 2007 r., a także literatura prawnicza z zakresu prawa rzeczowego. Autorka skupia się głównie na terminach dotyczących praw rzeczowych w ogólności oraz przedmiotach i podmiotach poszczególnych praw rzeczowych. Z uwagi na fakt, że w języku prawnym i prawniczym dużą rolę odgrywają określone zwroty, dlatego też analizie poddane zostały nie tylko pojedyncze słowa, ale i całe syntagmy – terminy przedstawione zostały głównie wewnątrz fraz. Choć instytucje chińskiego i polskiego prawa rzeczowego w pewnym stopniu się różnią, terminologia zdaje się być dość zbieżna. Jednakże tłumacz powinien zachować ostrożność w poszukiwaniu odpowiedniego ekwiwalentu, ponieważ dosłowne tłumaczenia nie zawsze pokrywają się z polskimi ekwiwalentami ustawowymi.
    The aim of this paper is to analyse basic Chinese legal terminology related to property law and to translate the examined terms into Polish. The research material shall be the second book of Polish Civil Code (Ownership and Other Property Rights) published in 1964 and Chinese Property Rights Law published in 2007, as well as theoretical literature concerning property law. The author focuses mainly on the terms regarding property rights in general and also objects and subjects of particular property rights. Since in legal language specific phrases play a significant role, that is the reason for analyzing not only single words, but also full syntagmas – the terms in this paper are presented mainly inside phrases. Although Chinese and Polish property law institutions slightly differ, the terminology seems quite parallel. However, translator has to be careful to find an optimal equivalent, forasmuch literal translation commonly does not cover Polish statutory equivalent.

    Badania korpusowe, jak i językoznawstwo korpusowe są dość młodymi dziedzinami nauki, są też według niektórych najszybciej rozwijającymi się metodą badawczą językoznawstwa. W badaniach korpusowych wykorzystuje się korpusy tekstów i specjalne oprogramowania komputerowe. Oprogramowanie to może być darmowe albo płatne, niestety, nie ważne, na jakie oprogramowanie się zdecydujemy, mogą pojawić się błędy lub program może mieć małą skuteczność. Niska skuteczność programu AntConc jest widoczna podczas badania korpusów języków izolujących. Po wprowadzeniu do programu AntConc korpusu, składającego się z 18 pozycji w języku wietnamskim (tj. 290 stron maszynopisu), poświęconych zagadnieniom zarządzania i prawa, program przedstawiał błędne wyniki. Począwszy od policzenia ilości słów i wytypowaniu jakie pojawiają się najczęściej do tworzenia list konkordancji. Istnieje kilka sposobów na zaradzeniu takiej sytuacji, pierwszą metodą jest „nauczenie” programu AntConc czytania języka wietnamskiego innymi słowy wprowadzenie listy słów które występują w języku wietnamskim. Inną metodą, znacznie trudniejszą i wymagającą dużego nakładu pracy, jest zamiana spacji między sylabami na inny znak który nie był by czytany jako odstęp między słowami przez program AntConc. Jeżeli by zastosować jedną z wyżej wymienionych metod, program ten miał by bardzo wysoką sprawność gdyż język wietnamski nie posiada końcówek fleksyjnych i jest typowym językiem SVO.
    On the one hand corpus research and corpus linguistics are relatively new fields of science but on the other hand, according to some people, there are one of fastest developing methods of linguistic research. To perform a corpus research, it is necessary to have a text corpus and a proper kind of software. The range of software kinds is wide and its easy to find free of charge on or license based software. Nevertheless, what the choice is, it is possible to encounter problems or the software will have low efficiency. Low efficiency of AntConc can be seen while researching a corpus compiled from an isolating language. After processing the corpus, consisting of 18 text items in the Vietnamese language (that is 290 pages of typescript) dedicated to the field of management and law, the software outputted incorrect results. Starting with counting the number of words in a corpus and ending with concordance plotting. There are two ways to deal with this problem. The method involves “teaching” AntConc how to read the Vietnamese language, in other words it is necessary to input a list of all words in the Vietnamese language. The second method is more time consuming because it involves replacing the spaces between syllables to a sign that will not be recognized by the software as a space. Using one of these methods could potentialy end in raising AntConc efficiency.

    Encountered at all levels of language, conceptual asymmetries between source and target languages present translators with fundamental challenges that require problem awareness, problem identification and problem solving. A case in point is conceptual metaphor in translation. Versions of conceptual metaphor theory have been applied in various productoriented studies of how translators deal with the challenge of metaphor in translation. However, there is potential in combining product-oriented approaches with techniques used to access translators’ cognitive processes, although process-oriented studies on how conceptual metaphor is re-conceptualised or re-mapped in translation are still rare. Building on an exploratory study carried out at our institute, in which findings from translation process data suggest that experience and/or training appears to be a main factor in handling conceptual metaphor, we present some salient features of re-mapping metaphor. Triangulating data from target-text products, keystroke logs and retrospective verbal commentaries collected under very similar conditions in a laboratory setting, we analyse how translators at different levels of experience handle two complex conceptual metaphors. The results appear to suggest that complex metaphor might indeed be culturespecific. They also potentially indicate that re-mapping practices are a function of experience and that re-mapping to a source-language target domain could create more uncertainty than generic-level re-mapping. Both findings hold pedagogical implications, which are discussed together with some methodological issues.

    Článek pojednává o problémech ekvivalence při přenosu ruských frazeologických neologismů do češtiny. Taková analýza je založena na materiálu rusko-českého slovníku neologismů sestaveného L. Stěpanovou a M. Dobrovou a publikovaným Olomouckou univerzitou. Zde je navržena typologie frazeologických ekvivalentů, kterou používají autoři slovníku, je popsána účinnost přenosu frazeologických jednotek do českého jazyka. Charakteristickým rysem frazeologických neologismů zdrojového jazyka je jeho původní zobrazení a expresivita, což znesnadňuje zejména výběr ekvivalentů.  
    The article discusses the problems of equivalence in the transfer of Russian phraseological neologisms into Czech. Such an analysis is based on the material of the Russian-Czech dictionary of neologisms compiled by L. Stepanova and M. Dobrova and published at the Olomouc University. A typology of phraseological equivalents, used by the authors of the dictionary, is proposed, the effectiveness of the transfer of phraseological units into the Czech language is demonstrated. A feature of phraseological neologisms of the source language is its original imagery and expressiveness, which makes the task of selecting equivalents especially difficult.

    Artykuł dotyczy podstawowych problemów przekładu wietnamskiej terminologii zanurzonej kulturowo. Autor omawia terminologię dotyczącą wybranych zwyczajów (zawierania związków małżeńskich oraz pogrzebów). Celem pracy jest pokazania, że różnice językowe (fonetyczne i gramatyczne) oraz kulturowe w istotny sposób wpływają na proces przekładu, mogąc niedoświadczonego tłumacza zwieść na manowce. By móc skutecznie tłumaczyć teksty z języka wietnamskiego na polski konieczna jest dogłębna znajomość kultury i realiów obu obszarów językowych, gdyż bez niej poprawne zrozumienie komunikatu w wielu przypadkach jest niemożliwe.
    This article is to explain the basic problems of interpreting Vietnamese culture-bound terminology. The author discusses terminology related to selected customs (including concluding marriages and funerals) as well as selected examples of culture-bound legal terminology. The aim of the apper is to make readers more sensitive to problems of interpreting Vietnamese texts in which words are composed of syllables which are separated with spaces. Therefore, it may be difficult to determine where one word ends, and the other starts in a sentence. The examples provided in the paper may serve as an exemple of potential problems encountered by Vietnamese non-native speakers.

    The focus of this paper is the Polish translation of Charles Reznikoff poetry. Firstly, there goes an overall characteristic of the work by the American writer, whose conceptions became a core of the objectivist group-program of young poets connected to the Jewish diaspora in the 1930’s. Later, the main focus shifts to the conditions and presumable reasons for certain choices made by Piotr Sommer, Reznikoff’s Polish translator. Sommer’s choice – focusing predominantly on Reznikoff’s poetic miniatures – sheds light on the translator’s artistic preferences. Those poems by Reznikoff that have been translated into Polish do not carry as rich a historical, social, and cultural context – so important for an artist of the Jewish background – as his longer works, saturated with the religious allusions. However, Sommer’s translator’s craft – full of care and responsive to detail – allows his translations to frequently signal the strangeness and liminality of the passer-by subject, roaming the streets of New York.

    V Poľsku slovenské myslenie o preklade je spájané predovšetkým s koncepciou Antona Popoviča a jeho školou prekladu. Článok načrtáva dejiny vývoja umeleckého prekladu a mys‑ lenia o preklade na Slovensku a následne popisuje zakladajúcu sa na praktických skúsenostiach koncepciu prekladateľa a kritika prekladu, básnika Ľubomíra Feldeka. Feldek takisto ako Popovič, považoval preklad za formu komunikácie. Podčiarkoval nasmerovanie na otázky recepcie. Svoje názory uviedol v knihe Z reči do reči (1977), ktorá sa stretla s veľkým záujmom medzi slo‑ venskými bádateľmi a teoretikmi prekladu. Článok uvádza polemické a kritické ohlasy ako aj akceptujúce a chváliace reakcie, ktoré odzneli vo chvíli uverejnenia Feldekovej knihy, a neskoršie komentáre až k najnovším, ktoré mapujú miesto názorov básnika — prekladateľa v slovenskej translatológii.
    In Poland, Slovak translatological thought is mainly associated with the concepts of Anton Popovič and his school of translation. The article presents an overview of the history of the de‑ velopment of translation and translation studies in Slovakia, and then discusses the poet L’ubomír Feldek’s concept based on his practical experiences as an interpreter and critic of translation. Feldek, like Popovič treats translation as a form of communication, emphasizing a focus on the issues of reception. He presented his conception in the book Z reči do reči (1977), which was met with great interest by Slovak theoreticians of translation. The article presents the polemical and critical opinions and acceptance and praise which were formulated at the time of the publication of the Feldek’s book, and the comments subsequent to the most recent controversy, which document the place of the views of the poet — translator in Slovak translatology.

The present article examines the writer's knowledge of the ancient world and languages and his attitude towards them. It also shows how his parody of schoolboys' translations of Caesar was reproduced in various languages by Gombrowicz's translators.

    Opis:
    Adolf Czerny (1864–1952) jest pierwszym tłumaczem białoruskiego utworu literackiego – wiersza Jakuba Kołasa (1882–1956) „Kraju rodzinny sercu miły” – na język czeski. Głównym celem pracy tłumacza było przybliżenie czeskiemu odbiorcy współczesnej literatury białoruskiej, w tym utworów Jakuba Kołasa i Janka Kupały. W artykule omówiono metodę tłumaczeniową Czernego, jego zainteresowanie literaturą białoruską w szerszym kontekście slawistycznej działalności autora.
    The author analyses translations of Belarusian literature and texts on Belarusian issues prepared by the Czech journalist, poet, slavist and interpreter Adolf Černý (1864–1952). Although we can call him a pioneer in the Belarusian studies in Czech Republic, his name is associated rather with his work for the magazine “Slovanský přehled” (“Slavonic Review”, founded in 1898) and with his translation activities and the Sorabian studies. He knew Belarus from his own experience (he visited it in 1889 and 1897). He published articles about Belarus in the magazines “Svĕtozor”, “Čas” and “Slovanský přehled”. He was the first to translate into the Czech language a poetry of the Belarusian classics Jakub Kolas and particularly Janka Kupala. The study focuses on Černy’s translation method and directs its interest at the Belarusian studies in the broader aspect of the author’s activities related to the Slavonic studies.
