Opis:
Tuberculosis (TB), an infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M.tb), remains a leading public health problem in most parts of the world. Despite the discovery of the bacilli over 100 years ago, there are still many unanswered questions about the host resistance to TB. Although one third of the world's population is infected with virulent M.tb, no more than 5-10% develop active disease within their lifetime. A lot of studies suggest that host genetic factors determine the outcome of M.tb-host interactions, however, specific genes and polymorphisms that govern the development of TB are not completely understood. Strong evidence exists for genes encoding pattern recognition receptors (TLR, CD14), C-type lectins, cytokines/chemokines and their receptors (IFN-γ, TNF-α, IL-12, IL-10, MCP-1, MMP-1), major histocompatibility complex (MHC) molecules, vitamin D receptor (VDR), and proton-coupled divalent metal ion transporters (SLC11A1). Polymorphisms in these genes have a diverse influence on the susceptibility to or protection against TB among particular families, ethnicities and races. In this paper, we review recent discoveries in genetic studies and correlate these findings with their influence on TB susceptibility.

Rhodococcus equi is an important etiologic agent of respiratory- and non-respiratory tract infections, diseases of animals and humans. Therapy includes the use of various group of chemotherapeutic agents, however resistance acquirement is quite common. To date there is no preferred treatment protocol for infections caused by isolates resistant to macrolides and rifampicin. The resistance acquirement is a result of many molecular mechanisms, some of which include alterations in the cell envelope composition and structure, activity of the efflux pumps, enzymatic destruction or inactivation of antibiotics, and changes in the target site. This paper contains an overview of antimicrobial susceptibility of R. equi, and explains the possible molecular mechanisms responsible for antimicrobial resistance in this particular microorganism.

We report the observation of cluster (local) superconductivity in the magnetoelectric $Pb(Fe_{1//2}Sb_{1//2})O_3$ ceramics prepared at a hydrostatic pressure of 6 GPa and temperatures 1200-1800 K to stabilize the perovskite phase. The superconductivity is manifested by an abrupt drop of the magnetic susceptibility at the critical temperature $T_{c}$ ≈7 K. Both the magnitude of this drop and $T_{c}$ decrease with magnetic field increase. Similarly, the low-field paramagnetic absorption measured by EPR spectrometer drops significantly below $T_{c}$ as well. The observed effects and their critical magnetic field dependence are interpreted as manifestation of the superconductivity and the Meissner effect in metallic Pb nanoclusters existing in the ceramics. Their volume fraction and average size were estimated as 0.1-0.2% and 140-150 nm, respectively. The superconductivity related effects disappear after oxidizing annealing of the ceramics.

A GIS+analysis was carried out in a test basin of southern Sicily, the Magazzolo River basin, in order to assess susceptibility conditions to gully erosion phenomena. The linear density of ephemeral and permanent gullies computed within each class of nine environmental variables was used to generate a gully erosion susceptibility map for the area. A validation procedure carried out in order to test the reliability of the adopted method highlighted a clear correlation between the occurrence of gullies and the computed susceptibility levels.

We review the use of magnetic susceptibility measurements to classify meteorites, showing that magnetic susceptibility of meteorites vary over 3 orders of magnitude and shows often a narrow range for a given meteorite group, especially in chondrites. Weathering of metal may bias the magnetic classification. For ordinary chondrite falls, the method is quite robust, as shown by its application to the recent Sołtmany fall.

Wherever industrial development exists, environmental pollution increases day by day. The heavy metals play an important role in soil and environmental pollutions and directly affect the human being lives. In this study, we determine pollutions resulting from heavy metal particles emanating from the brake discs pads of the vehicles on high ways and nearby factories. The field work was carried out in İzmir-Aliağa industrial area. Magnetic susceptibility measurements were done at a long profile crossing the İzmir-Çanakkale highway that goes through the study area. Here, we have determined the effect of heavy metals causing pollution in the surroundings. The studies indicate that the average acceptable values of magnetic susceptibility in such areas is about 0-50×10¯⁵ SI. Here we show that the magnetic susceptibility measurement values obtained along our study profile are about 18 times the acceptable ranges.

Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is an important nosocomial pathogen causing a significant mortality and morbidity. The main objective of the study was to establish antibiotic susceptibility pattern MRSA isolated from pediatrics clinical samples at Webuye District Hospital. A total of 96 clinical samples that include blood, abscess, ear swabs, and urine and wound/pus swabs were collected by simple random techniques. These samples were cultured onto Blood agar and MacConkey agar respectively and incubated at 37oC for 24 hours. In the result 83 (86.5%) clinical samples had pure colonies of S. aureus which were identified morphologically and biochemically by standard laboratory procedures using Bergey’s Manual of Clinical Microbiology. All confirmed positive isolates were screened for MRSA whereby 18 (21.7%) were MRSA and these were subjected to susceptibility testing to common antibiotics by modified Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method. The susceptibility was interpreted according to National Clinical laboratory Standard guidelines. From the study the prevalence of MRSA was 18 (21.7%) with the highest obtained in the wound/pus swab. Almost all MRSA was resistant to penicillin (92.8%) and cephalexin (96.6%) and amoxicillin (91%). The most effective antibiotics against the of MRSA strain were vancomycin (98.97%), ciprofloxacin (88.4%) and gentamycin (83.06%). Vancomycin was the most effective drug showed the largest inhibition zone.

Volume magnetic susceptibility of soils and alluvial sediments from the eastern Pomeranian region near Gdańsk was investigated. Full set of geochemical analyses had been previously performed for all the samples studied. The results are presented in the form of the susceptibility maps of the topsoil horizon, the subsoil at the depth between 40 and 60 cm and the alluvial sediments. Additionally the differential susceptibility map between topsoil horizon and the subsoil at the depth 40-60 cm has been also constructed. A close correlation is observed between positive anomalies of differential susceptibility and urban areas. This is interpreted as surface anthropogenic pollution. Magnetic susceptibility values higher than 1200 x 10-6 SI units, observed in topsoil horizon, might reflect high contents of such elements as Ba, Co, Mg, Mn and Ni.

Based on the analyses of landslide spatial occurrence, a regional landslide susceptibility model for the area of Slovenia with medium spatial resolution was calculated. Of 3241 landslides with known locations, 67% were selected randomly but representatively as the learning sub-set and used for univariate statistical analyses (c2) to analyse the landslide occurrence in relation to the precondition factors (lithology, slope inclination, slope curvature, slope aspect, distance to geological boundaries, distance to structural elements, distance to surface waters, flow length and land-cover type). In addition, a relation to the triggering factors (maximum 24-hour rainfall intensity with a return period of 100 years, average annual rainfall, and peak ground acceleration with a return period of 475 years) was assessed. The analyses were performed using a geographic information system – GIS in raster format with 25 × 25 m pixel size. The results of the analyses were later used for the development of a weighted linear susceptibility model where more than 156 000 automatically calculated models with random weight combinations were derived. The landslide testing sub-set (33% of landslides) and representative areas with no landslides were used for the validation of all models developed. The results showed that relevant precondition factors for landslide occurrence are (with their weight in a linear model): lithology (0.33), slope inclination (0.23), land-cover type (0.27), slope curvature (0.08), distance to structural elements (0.05), and slope aspect (0.05).

Magnetic susceptibility measurements were taken in eight selected streets of Opole, with diversified vehicle traffic intensity. The experiment surfaces were marked on every street, with two separate zones: A – a strip directly adjacent to the road and B – a strip 1 m away from the road edge. The carried out research indicated considerable influence of communication-generated pollution, with simultaneous influence of other local emission sources. The relation of magnetic anomalies was indicated, which may be the result of ferromagnetic materials aggregation, originating mainly from combustion processes. The road structure, including the surface condition, the main construction material and susceptibility of the surface to cracking are equally important when considering the magnetic increase. A considerable variation of magnetic measurements in different season was pointed out; however, the largest median values of magnetic susceptibility were recorded in the summer season.

A new investigation and palaeoenvironmental reconstruction of the locss-palaeosol sequence at Prymorskc, SW s q Ukraine is presented using soil structures, grain size, mineral magnetics, organic carbon and calcium carbonate determinations. Six units of the established Ukraine Quaternary stratigraphical scheme have been identified and analysed above and including the Zavadivka (Holsteinian) marker horizon - Dnieper, Kaidaky, Tiasmyn, Pryluky and Udai. Precipitation and temperature are tentatively reconstructed from soil and sedimentary proxies calibrated by modern analogues. Increased temperatures and precipitation to today are inferred for the red-brown Zavadivka palaeosol. Overlying Zavadivka is the Dnieper loess containing a gley and two chernozcms above, possibly representing climatic variations of the Saalian Glaciation. The calcified chernozem Kaidaky is separated by a thin loess from the brown/ chestnut Pryluky palaeosol (Eemian) which has features indicating drier conditions to the present. Non-gleyed palaeosols exhibit an enhanced magnetic susceptibility (MS) signal relative to the less weathered loess and highlights the palaeoclimatic potential of the technique. The most well developed palaeosol from this study has the highest MS value (Zavadivka: 80-1 o·8 SJ units) but this relationship is not always found in the Black Sea region. Previous MS analyses at Prymorske (Nawrocki et al. 1999) report significantly higher values to those of this study. Consequently the MS curve at Prymorske cannot be used with confidence for palaeoenvironmental reconstruction and inter-regional correlation without further investigation and modern analogue study.

In the paper we introduce a general approach to wildland fire risk management that we applied for the Slovensky raj territory. The risk management concept is based on assessment of several risk components: susceptibility in the form of calculation of a priori probability of forest destroying by fire, vulnerability based on calculation of posteriori probability of forest destroying by fire and based on modelling the fire behaviour in FARSITE environment. We also briefly introduce an approach to set the measures to prevent the forest fire occurrence and to manage it to minimize its impacts on human, environment and property (resilience).

Drought is an important factor that causes a decrease in yield and quality in regions where second crop silage plants are grown. One of the biggest problems in animal husbandry is feed. Especially silage feed production tends to decrease in areas with increasing water deficit and where water needs cannot be met. The high water requirement of the corn plant requires irrigation in arid and semi-arid regions. However, in order to continue the production of silage fodder in regions where water resources are insufficient with the increase of drought, it will be necessary to grow forage plants that can be an alternative to corn plant. In previous studies, it has been discussed whether the sorghum plant is an alternative to the corn plant. The aim of this study is to determine the drought sensitivity index based on the yield values of both plants in wet and dry conditions. Thus, it will be determined whether the sorghum plant will be an alternative to the corn plant in terms of drought. The identification and selection of drought-resistant cultivars and species is possible using various indices. In this study, second crop silage maize and sorghum crops were grown in Kahramanmaraş conditions for two years (2018 and 2019), dry and irrigated. Stress sensitivity index (SSI) was used to determine the drought tolerance of silage maize and sorghum crops. 'Colonia' variety was used for silage corn and 'Es Foehn' variety was used for sorghum. When the STI values are examined, the corn and sorghum values for 2018 were 0.55 and 0.53, respectively, while the d values for 2019 were found as 0.33 in corn and 0.54 in sorghum. these values are very close to the YSI values. While the 2018 values in both indices were not determinative in terms of drought resistance, the value of sorghum in 2019 was 64% higher than corn (this value was found to be 61% for YSI). This also showed that there is a direct correlation between YSI and STI indices.

This work presents a method for measuring the magnetic susceptibility of soil samples based on interactions of magnetic particles contained in a tested sample with a weighed permanent magnet placed in the balance mechanical design. The MYA 2.4Y microbalance manufactured by Radwag Wagi Elektroniczne, Poland, was used to perform mass measurements. The weighing system was adjusted for mass indication using a certified mass standard, and for magnetic susceptibility indication using a certified magnetic susceptibility standard. The volume of each analysed soil sample was 3.93 cm3 and was similar to the volume and the size of the magnetic susceptibility standard. The research was carried out for 10 soil samples with a magnetic susceptibility range varying from 20 to 1600x10-8 m3 kg-1. The soil samples contained technogenic magnetic particles and particles of natural magnetite of geogenic origin. The study was performed for a field of 2 mT.

Human biomonitoring, as a tool to identify health risk from environmental exposures, has gained increasing interest especially in the areas of cancer risk assessment and diseases treatment. Chromosome aberrations resulting from direct DNA breakage or from inhibition of DNA repair or synthesis, measured in peripheral blood lymphocytes, have been used successfully in the assessment of health risk associated to environmental genotoxic exposures. A faster but sensitive and reliable method for detection of DNA damage, or DNA repair capacity, might be crucial to many fields from molecular epidemiology and toxicology to preventive and clinical medicine. There are reports that results of DNA measures with the use of single cell gel electrophoresis (SCGE) correlate, on the one hand, with physical measures of genotoxins, and on the other hand, with cytogenetic damage that is a biomarker associated to the alteration of the health risk. This review is based on studies in which exposure to radiation was applied as a challenging treatment and DNA damage induced and repaired was analyzed with the use of the alkaline version of SCGE assay. Results from studies on susceptibilities and repair competence carried out in various groups of exposed workers, controls, and cancer patients (more than 700 donors) show variability between donors both in a response to challenging treatment and in the efficiency of repair process. Influences of the occupational exposures and factors depending on genotypes or life style on cellular capacities are observed. Discussed results suggest that study in vitro with the challenging cells by radiation exposure and measuring, with the SCGE assay, the DNA damage before and after repair, may develop a good biomarker of the individual susceptibility to various genotoxins and exposures (environmental, occupational, therapeutic). Such a biomarker may have a potential use in a molecular epidemiology and preclinical identification.

Assessment of the impact of ship model parameters was performed on the basis of Pareto-Lorentz curves and ABC method in order to determine sets of the parameters which have either crucial, moderate or low impact on objective function. Simulation investigations were carried out with taking into account integral control quality indices.

Opis:
Slope failures (SF) in mountainous terrain often occur during or after heavy rainstorms, resulting in the loss of life and damage to the natural and/or built environment. Assessing areas susceptible to SF is essential for land use planning in threatened areas. This article presents an didactic basedanalysis of the potential contribution to geo-spatial approaches for predicting SF qualitative exposure in mountainous environment. Its main aim is to assess the impact of the geologic, geomorphic, rainstorms, and anthropogenic factors in the initiation of SF in Zaarouria region. 219 events (1996–2016) were inventoried through images interpretation and field surveys and were compared to the physical parameters of the terrain to give a SF susceptibility index value using a simplified model. Vulnerability and risk maps are also established. The Standard deviation classification was used to delineate various susceptibility, vulnerability and risk zones, namely, nil, low, moderate and high. Field data on SF were employed to evaluate and validate the susceptibility zonation map. The results of this study demonstrate that SF are largely governed not only by geoenvironmental conditions but also by human activities, mainly roads and construction.

The phenomenon of antibiotic resistance has dramatically increased in the last few decades, especially in enterobacterial pathogens. Different strains of Escherichia coli have been reported to produce a variety of structurally different siderophores. In the present study, 32 E. coli strains were collected from different clinical settings in Cairo, Egypt and subjected to the antibiotic susceptibility test by using 19 antibiotics belonging to 7 classes of chemical groups. The results indicated that 31 strains could be considered as extensively drug-resistant and only one strain as pan drug-resistant. Siderophores production by all the tested E. coli strains was determined qualitatively and quantitatively. Two E. coli strains coded 21 and 49 were found to be the most potent siderophores producers, with 79.9 and 46.62%, respectively. Bacterial colonies with cured plasmids derived from strain 49 showed susceptibility to all the tested antibiotics. Furthermore, E. coli DH5α cells transformed with the plasmid isolated from E. coli strain 21 or E. coli strain 49 were found to be susceptible to ansamycins, quinolones, and sulfonamide groups of antibiotics. In contrast, both plasmid-cured and plasmid-transformed strains did not produce siderophores, indicating that the genes responsible for siderophores production were located on plasmids and regulated by genes located on the chromosome. On the basis of the obtained results, it could be concluded that there is a positive correlation between antibiotic resistance, especially to quinolones and sulfonamide groups, and siderophores production by E. coli strains used in this study.

Klebsiella pneumoniae (KP) was investigated in respondents presenting signs and symptoms of urinary tract infection (UTI) in a rural community. Using simple random sampling, a total of 360 respondents (144 males and 216 females) were recruited into the study following informed consent and ethical approval. Mid-stream urine samples were collected from all the respondents aseptically using standard protocol. Isolation of K. pneumoniae was done using morphological characteristics and various biochemical tests while antibiotic sensitivity testing using various antibiotics was done using guidelines of Clinical and Laboratory Standard Institute. A total of 16 samples gave positive culture representing an overall prevalence of 4.4%. Furthermore, prevalence rates of 2.8%, 5.6%, 47.82%, 4.9%, 3.50%, and 8.60% for males, females, diabetics, in-patients, out-patients, and respondents above 60 years of age respectively were obtained. Resistance to antibiotics ranged from 37.50 to 56.25% for gentamycin and nalidixic, and tarivid, respectively. There is need for preventive measures aimed at sensitization of dwellers in community settings.

The aim of the date was to determine the sensitivity to chitosan ascorbate microaerophilic bacteria isolated from pathological pockets, root canals and apical abscesses. Chitosan was obtained from Antarctic krill. The experiments included 70 clinical isolates and 4 standards strains. The susceptibility of microaerophilic bacteria was performed by means of plate dilution technique in Brucella agar supplemented with 5% defibrinated sheep blood. Inoculum contained 105 CFU per spot. Incubation inoculated agar was performed at 37°C for 48 hrs in microaerophilic conditions. MIC was defined as the least concentrations of chitosan ascorbate that inhibited growth of tested bacteria. The results indicated that 47% of all date bacteria was susceptible to chitosan ascorbate in ranges ≤ 0.01 – 0.5 mg/ml. The most susceptible were the strains of Corynebacterium matruchotii (100%, MIC ≤ 0.01 – 0.5 mg/ml) and the least sensitive strains of Rothia dentocariosa (MIC in ranges 1.0 ˗ ≥ 4.0 mg/ml ).

Magnetic susceptibility measurements remain one of the most reliable methods used to investigate the pollution of both surface and subsurface soil from metallic anthropogenic sources. Most of the geological rocks within the study area increase the susceptibility of the soil; however, knowing the natural background susceptibility of the parent rocks will give an idea of the anthropogenic influence on the susceptibility of the soil. This study was carried out in Kogi State, North Central Nigeria, with the aim of determining the depth of the boundary between the anthropogenic influences on soil magnetic susceptibility from those of a lithogenic origin. Magnetic susceptibility measurements were carried out on 1,760 soil samples, collected from 220 soil profiles at a depth of 80.0 cm and at intervals of 10.0 cm. From the spatial distribution of magnetic susceptibility maps at different depths, the boundary between the basement complex and the sedimentary basin was clearly demarcated. The result further shows the highest magnetic susceptibility values of 350–650 × 10−5 SI, which dominates the surface soil to a depth of 40.0 cm. At the depth of 40–50 cm, the result indicates the combination of a natural anthropogenic influence on soil magnetic susceptibility with an average of 250 × 10−5 SI. Furthermore, no evidence of layering along the depth sections was observed, suggesting that the soil profiles indicate areas mainly covered by anthropogenically influenced susceptibility, which were localized and restricted to commercial places within the state. This study reveals that the average depth of soil affected by anthropogenic pollutants is between 40–50 cm in commercial places and 20–30 cm in other places with less commercial activities.

The purpose of this article is to determine the effect of the concentration of magnetic particles in ferro-oil on the value of its magnetic susceptibility coefficient χ. Determination of the flow and operating parameters of slide journal bearings lubricated with ferro-oils requires, inter alia, designation the first magnetization N and the magnetic induction B vector components, dependent on the magnetic propertis of the lubricant. The fundamental problem lies in the inability to make direct accurate measurement of magnetic induction in the lubricating gap of slide bearing and its solution is to determine it on the analytical and numerical way. A key issue for the accuracy of such solutions is to obtain reasonably accurate values of magnetic susceptibility χ. This article attempts to determine these values and estimate their relationship with the concentration of magnetic particles concentration in ferro-oil being potential lubricant above-mentioned bearings. In this paper, the authors present the characteristic of experimental test benches to determine the coefficients of the magnetic susceptibility. They present method of determining this value from obtained measurement data and analyse the impact of the magnetic particles concentration in ferro-oil on its magnetic susceptibility values. Tests were performed for selected concentrations of magnetic particles in ferro-oil ranging: 2%, 4%, 6% and 8% and the tested ferro-oil was product from Unterensingen FerroTec Company (Germany) which is a mixture of colloidal mineral engine oil LongLife Gold Penzzoil class SAE 15W-40 with addition of Fe3O4 magnetic particles and a surfactant.

Candida species can be a reason of infections associated with high morbidity and mortality. The risk of invasive candidosis for patients admitted to intensive care units (ICUs) is increased due to immunosuppressive states, prolonged length of stay, broad-spectrum antibiotics and Candida colonization. The aim of the study was to determine selected properties of fungi isolated from patients treated in the ICUs of hospitals in Lodz. The materials were collected from the oral cavity, the tracheostomy or endotracheal tube and urine from 16 children and 35 adult. In total, 127 samples were examined to differentiate the fungal strains with used morphological and biochemical methods. Candida species were isolated from adult patients (82.9%), but were not isolated from any of the children; C. albicans was the predominant fungus (61.7%), much less frequent were C. glabrata (12.8%), C. tropicalis (6.4%) and C. kefyr, C. dubliniensis (4.3% each).The susceptibility of fungi to antimycotic drugs revealed that almost all of the strains were susceptible to nystatin (97.9%) and to amphotericin B (72.3%), and resistant to fluconazole (72.3%) and ketoconazole (57.5%). No isolation of fungi from children remaining in ICU may be an evidence of high sanitary regime at these wards; fungi from the genus Candida are the etiological factors for ICU infections; 3/5 of them are caused by C. albicans, mostly of the code 2 576 174, characteristic for strains isolated from hospitalized patients; it is necessary to determine the species of the fungus and its susceptibility to drugs, which allows to conduct effective therapy; prophylactic administration of fluconazole leads to an increase in the number of strains resistant to this chemotherapeutic agent; in the antifungal local treatment, nystatin should be a drug of choice as the drug to which most fungi are susceptible.

Using the location data of landslides and information on geo-environmental conditions, the landslide susceptibility in Poland was calculated using statistical methods. It shows that 15% of the country’s area is susceptible to landslides. The greatest threats occur in the Carpathians and in many regions of the Sudetes, uplands and in the riverbanks. The most vulnerable areas are the slopes in the range of 9-30°, which are built by the flysch sediments in the faulted zones. The areas susceptible to landslides include over a million buildings and about 7,000 km of roads.

Detecting genetic association models between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in various disease-related genes can help to understand susceptibility to disease. Statistical tools have been widely used to detect significant genetic association models, according to their related statistical values, including odds ratio (OR), chi-square test (χ2), p-value, etc. However, the high number of computations entailed in such operations may limit the capacity of such statistical tools to detect high-order genetic associations. In this study, we propose lsGA algorithm, a genetic algorithm based on local search method, to detect significant genetic association models amongst large numbers of SNP combinations. We used two disease models to simulate the large data sets considering the minor allele frequency (MAF), number of SNPs, and number of samples. The three-order epistasis models were evaluated by chi-square test (χ2) to evaluate the significance (P-value < 0.05). Analysis results showed that lsGA provided higher chi-square test values than that of GA. Simple linear regression indicated that lsGA provides a significant advantage over GA, providing the highest β values and significant p-value.

The studies carried out in 1997-1998 were aimed at evaluating the incidence of Broad bean stain virus (BBSV) in pea seed material, susceptibility of pea cultivars to the virus and transmission of BBSV by seeds of selected pea cultivars. Experiments were performed in field conditions and in a greenhouse. The presence of the virus in pea plants and seeds was determined by isolation onto Chenopodium murale or serologically by ELISA test. In the seed material, the virus was detected only in 0.1% of the seeds. The pea cultivars: Cud Kelvedonu, Delisa II, Hejga, Iłówiecki, Konserwowy IHAR, Maraton, Nefryt, Pegaz, Sześciotygodniowy and Telefon, appeared to be susceptible to the infection by BBSV and percentage of infected plants ranged from 6.6 to 35%. Transmission of the virus by seeds occurred in all cultivars mentioned above except for cv. Maraton and percentage of infected seeds ranged from 2.9 to 50.0, depending on cultivar of pea.

W sezonie 2005–2006 badano odporność na fuzariozę kłosów po inokulacji F. culmorum oraz pleśń śniegową (M. nivale) i rdzę brunatną (P. recondita) z infekcji naturalnej rodów pszenicy ozimej i pszenżyta ozimego z doświadczeń wstępnych. Stwierdzono istotne zróżnicowanie podatności rodów pszenicy i pszenżyta na fuzariozę kłosów oraz różnice pomiędzy rodami pochodzącymi z poszczególnych firm (programów) hodowlanych. Porażenie rodów pszenżyta było około 40% niższe niż pszenicy. Wysokość roślin u rodów pszenicy istotnie korelowała z nasileniem fuzariozy kłosów. Podobnej zależności nie obserwowano u rodów pszenżyta (tradycyjnych i krótkosłomych). Rody pszenicy i pszenżyta tradycyjnego wykazały średnią podatność na pleśń śniegową. Natomiast rody pszenżyta krótkosłomego były w większości bardzo podatne na tę chorobę. Odporność rodów pszenżyta na rdzę brunatną była zróżnicowana. Około 25% rodów wykazało całkowitą odporność.
Resistance of breeding lines of winter wheat and winter triticale inoculated with F. culmorum to Fusarium head blight was tested in 2006. Also resistance to snow mold (M. nivale) and leaf rust (P. recondita) was assessed after natural infection. Significant variability of resistance of the wheat and triticale lines to head blight was observed and differences were found between lines from different breeding companies (programs). The triticale lines were about 40% less infected than the wheat lines. Plant height of the wheat lines correlated significantly with Fusarium head blight severity. Such a relationship was not observed for the triticale lines (traditional and short stem). The wheat and traditional triticale lines were similarly susceptible to snow mold, while the short stem triticale lines were highly susceptible to this disease. The triticale lines revealed variability of resistance to brown rust. About 25% of the lines showed immune-like reaction.

This paper presents a GIS-based method for landslide susceptibility (LS) assessment using slope-movement inventory and field data. The study has been carried out along A1-Highway (A1-H) in Hanif region as this road section is threated by several types of mass wasting. This hilly zone is known by their landslides sensitive terrains in the North of Algeria. The terrain data are collected from a Géologic map, satellite imageries, digital elevation model, rainfall data, field suveys and ancillary data. In this paper Frequency Ratios (FR) based on bivariate statistical method are evaluated by comparing the observed landslides to their controlling factors. The product of the linear summation of the FR values was a landslide susceptibility index (LSI) map. It was categorized using the natural breaks classification method. The resultant LS zonation map delineates the area into five hierarchic zones. The results confirms that the angle of the slope, plays the most role in wasting especially in road sides. The LS can be used for preliminary land use planning and hazard mitigation purpose. By means of this map the current route of the A1-H can be improved to cross less susceptibles zones.

Th is study has two main approaches. First, it exploits the susceptibility of tomato cultivars as a prophylactic measure to detect auto resistance characters of the tested tomato varieties against Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) (Homoptera: Aleyrodidae). Secondly, it evaluates the efficacy of different bio-rational insecticides against B. tabaci under greenhouse conditions. The results exhibited a special significance in B. tabaci infestation suitability between the two tomato varieties with a high infestation significance found in the Shifa F1 hybrid tomato variety compared to the Savera F1 hybrid tomato variety in the fi rst plantation period. Subsequently, in the second plantation period, there was a significant difference between the two tomato varieties. Bemisia tabaci showed a preference for the Shifa F1 hybrid over the Savera F1 hybrid tomato variety. Th ese diff erences occurred during the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 6th, 7th, 8th, and 10th weeks. In the experimental trial for the efficacy of eco-friendly biorational insecticides, spinosad, azadirachtin, Beauveria bassiana and Metarhizium anisopliae, there were significant differences between the treated and untreated plants during the two plantation periods. A high efficacy of spinosad on the B. tabaci population was found. Bemisia tabaci infestation under all the applications was reduced from 50 to 94.61% for the two plantation periods. This obvious decrease in B. tabaci population increase attention to benefits of the different bio-rational insecticides.

Introduction and objective. Several studies have reported therapy failures in patients with legionnaires’disease; however, antimicrobial resistance of clinical and environmental isolates of Legionella spp. has not yet been documented. Routine susceptibility testing of Legionella spp. is not recommended because of difficulties in determining standard minimal inhibitory concentration values. The purpose of this study was to analyze the antimicrobial susceptibility of Legionella pneumophila. strains isolated from a water supply system. Materials and method. Twenty-eight isolates of L. pneumophila (16 – L. pneumophila SG 1, 12 – L. pneumophila SG 2–14) obtained from water systems in public buildings in Poland were tested. Susceptibility testing was performed using the E-test method. The tested antibiotic were azithromycin, ciprofloxacin, and rifampicin. The medium used for the susceptibility testing was BCYE-, a special medium for Legionella cultivation. Results. Among the tested strains, L. pneumophila was the only one resistant to azithromycin. It was a strain of L. pneumophila SG 2–14 isolated from the water system in a sanitorium. All isolates were found to be sensitive to ciprofloxacin and rifampicin. However, the azithromycin-resistant strain exhibited higher ciprofloxacin and rifampicin MIC (1.5 μg/ml, and 0.19 μg/ml, respectively). The MIC50 for azithromycin, ciprofloxacin, and rifampicin were 0,032, 0,125, and 0,003 μg/ml, respectively. The MIC90 for azithromycin, ciprofloxacin, and rifampicin were 0,032, 0,125, and 0,003 μg/ml, respectively. Conclusions. Azithromycin resistance was found in one strain of L. pneumophila SG 2–14, but the resistance mechanism is unknown and needs further study. It is possible that therapeutic failures in Legionnaires’ disease may be associated with bacterial resistance which should be taken into account. The antibiotic sensitivity testing described in this study could be helpful in detecting the resistance of clinical L. pneumophila isolates. Ciprofloxacin and rifampicin have good in vitro activity against environmental L. pneumophila SG 1 and SG 2–14 in Poland.

Increasing use of elctromagnetic fields (EF) in the treatment of various diseases may have potential impacts on fungi - possible aetiological factors of concomitant mycoses. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of EF on miconazole susceptibility among fungi of the genus Candida showing confirmed pathogenicity in humans. Fifteen Candida strains obtained from patients were used and their susceptibility to miconazole was determined by diffusion in agar gel. Antifungal activity of miconazole was assessed as minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) which was calculated for Candida strains not exposed to EF (control) and EF-exposed (3 experiments). In the majority of cases the susceptibility of Candida species to miconazole decreased (higher MICs) after the first week of EF exposure, regardless of the EF's parameters. This was followed by an increase in susceptibility (lower MICs) after the second week of exposure to EF of 2 mT intensity and frequency 3 Hz (experiment I) and an EF of 9 mT intensity and 12.5 Hz frequency (experiment II) relative to control. An increase in susceptibility (lower MICs) was observed in the second week of exposure, whatever the parameters of the EF. The application of low intensity, low frequency EF for a period of at least two weeks may be beneficial in the treatment of mycoses caused by pathogenic fungi of Candida genus.

The paper presents the results of plot experiments on susceptibility of 4 cultivars of fiber flax: Alba, Belinka, Nike and Wiko to broad-leaved weed herbicides (chlorsulfuron, bentazon + MCPA) and graminicides (haloksylop-R, chizalofop P, and setoxidim), used as single or mixtures. The experiments were conducted on two soil suitability complexes in the years 1994-1996. The cultivars Alba and Wiko were more susceptible to herbicides than Nike and Belinka. More susceptible Alba and Wiko showed faster phenological development as compared to two other cultivars, especially in the first period of growing season (from germination to the stage of fast growth). Herbicides had more phytotoxic effect on flax plants on light soil than on other ones. The most phytotoxic effect on tested cultivars, leading to a reduction of scutched fiber yield, was observed for the mixture of haloksylop-R + chlorsulfuron and bentazon + MCPA followed by setoxidim at 7-day interval. Higher yields of most flax cultivars were observed when flax was sprayed with chlorsulfuron herbicides followed by one of the tested graminicides (haloksylop-R, chizalofop P or setoxidim) after seven days from application of chlorsulfuron. The cultivar Nike has been found to be the most resistant to tested herbicides. Application of chemical methods of weed control for cultivation of this cultivar resulted in an increase of long yield of scutched fiber. The herbicides tested in the experiment usually had a beneficial effect on the quality of flax scutched fiber, especially in case of Alba and Wiko cultivars.
W pracy przedstawiono wyniki doświadczeń polowych wykonanych w latach 1994-1996, w których oceniano wrażliwość 4 odmian lnu włóknistego: Alba, belinka, Nike i Wiko na herbicydy zwalczające chwasty dwuliścienne (chlorsulfuron, bentazon + MCPA) i graminicydy (haloksylop-R, chisalofop P, setoksydim). Odmiany Alba i Wiko były bardziej wrażliwe na herbicydy niż odmiany Nike i Bielinka. Odmiany wrażliwe charakteryzowały się szybszym wzrostem w początkowym okresie wegetacji. Herbicydy wykazały większą fitotoksyczność na rośliny lnu na glebie lekkiej. Największy ujemny wpływ fitotoksyczny na odminy lnu oraz redukcja włókna długiego wystąpiła po zastosowaniu mieszaniny herbicydów: chlorsulfuronu + haloksylop-R i bentazonu + MCPA i zastosowaniu 7 dni później setoxidimu. Największy plon uzyskano po zastosowaniu chlorsulfuronu a po 7 dniach graminicydów (haloksylop-R, chisalofop P i setoxidimu). Odmiana Nike okazała się najbardziej odporna na badane herbicydy. Badane herbicydy miały korzystny wpływ na jakość włókna w słomie lnu, szczególnie miało to miejsce w odmianach Alba i Wike.

We calculate the magnetic susceptibility of two interacting electrons confined in a coupled double quantum dot presented in a magnetic field by solving the relative Hamiltonian using the combined variational and exact diagonalization methods. We have investigated the dependence of the magnetic susceptibility on temperature, magnetic field strength, confining frequency, and barrier height. The singlet-triplet transitions in the ground state of the quantum dot spectra and the corresponding jumps in the magnetic susceptibility curves have been shown. The comparisons show that our results are in very good agreement with reported works.

Performance contagion is an environmental influential factor that leads to change in the performance of a person who is susceptible to contagion. For the purpose of constructing a conceptual model of employees’ susceptibility to job performance contagion, a general scale for testing the amount of the individual’s susceptibility to performance contagion was developed in the present study. This scale was used in developing a questionnaire. Then the questionnaire was distributed to the 187 non-teaching staff of the Science and Research branch of Islamic Azad University and its validity, reliability, constructrelated evidence and contentrelated evidence were studied.

In 1970-2010, during the period of spring circulation and summer stagnation, hydrochemical studies were conducted in Lake Ińsko (Western Pomeranian Lake Region, Poland) with determination of the lake susceptibility to degradation and trophic changes. Also, the effect of the catchment area on the water quality in this waterbody was assessed. The waters of the study lake were characterised by low static index, which is an additional indicator of low dynamics of water masses, and low susceptibility to degradation. In spite of this, significant changes in the lake quality and trophy were observed. The hydrochemical parameters defining water quality of the study lake continued to improve. In the 70’s, the water quality was at the border of class II and III, while in 2006 and 2010 it reached the level characteristic for class I waters. Moreover, in the 70’s and 80’s of the previous century, Lake Ińsko Duże was a mesotrophic lake. Then, an increase in the lake trophy was observed, resulting in signs of eutrophy. At the end of the 90’s and in the first decade of the 21st century, the study lake returned to the state of mesotrophy. No restoration works were undertaken in Lake Ińsko in the study period. The improvement in water quality, called oligotrophication, resulted most probably from the lake reaction to changes in the soil use in the catchment area, since fewer phosphorus and nitrogen compounds flow into the lake, and also from the regulation of the wastewater management in the town of Ińsko.

The effect of electron beam irradiation on magnetic property of iron bearing minerals was investigated by susceptibility measurements. The results show that the magnetic susceptibility of iron bearing sulfide minerals can be enhanced remarkably by strong beam current irradiation, while the magnetic susceptibility of oxidized iron minerals keeps unchanged and even is slightly reduced. The magnetic susceptibility of arsenopyrite can reach the ferromagnetic level. The particle size of irradiated minerals makes notable effects on magnetic susceptibility. The magnetic susceptibility of irradiated minerals is enhanced greatly with reduction of particle size, and the irradiation dose corresponding to the maximum magnetic susceptibility is decreased simultaneously. Exposure of pyrite to small beam current electron irradiation can only enhance its magnetic susceptibility from 4 to 5-fold. Enhancement of magnetic property by radiation induced defects and excitation in minerals is limited. Strong beam current electron irradiation provides a novel approach to enlarge the magnetic property differences between iron bearing minerals.

The hospital environment is particularly predisposed to developing infections. The aim of the study was to determine the antimicrobial susceptibility of 52 strains isolated from the urology ward environment and to determine their polymorphism. Microorganisms present in the air were determined by sedimentation, and microbial surface was studied using contact plates. After identifying, the strains were assessed for susceptibility using disc diff usion method. Most strains were isolated CNS – 43 strains (82.69%), among which was the most numerous species of S. haemolyticus (14 strains – 32.6%), 21 CNS strains (48.8%) were resistant to methicillin (MRCNS). None of S. aureus was isolated from the environment. The greatest effi cacy against staphylococci showed netilmicin (97.7%), vancomycin (95.3%) and amikacin (93.0%). Most CNS were resistant to erythromycin (37.2% sensitive strains), trimethoprim with sulfamethoxazole (46.5% sensitive strains) and cefoxitin (methicillin – 51.2% sensitive strains). Staphylococci from the air were associated with less antibiotic resistance than those isolated from the test surface. Furthermore, out of the urology ward environment were isolated 6 strains of non-fermenting rods, and 3 strains of Enterobacteriaceae. All strains of non-fermenting rods were sensitive to gentamicin, tobramycin, and netilmicin. The lowest effi cacy had a combination of ampicillin with sulbactam (83.3% resistant strains). Rods of the Enterobacteriaceae family were susceptible to piperacillin with tazobactam, imipenem, ciprofl oxacin, amikacin, netilmicin, tobramycin, chloramphenicol and tetracycline. The least eff ective drugs were: trimethoprim with sulfamethoxazole, amoxicillin with clavulanic acid, cefotaxime, and cefamandole. Strains belonging to the same species showed, in most cases, diff erent susceptibility profi les. Identical susceptibility profi le, despite diff erent sites of material collection, occurred in two strains of S. haemolyticus and two strains of Pseudomonas spp, which may indicate their common ancestry. Continuous monitoring of the susceptibility, both clinical strains and those isolated from hospital environment and the rational use of antibiotics is necessary in order to reduce the growing bacterial resistance to commonly used antibiotics.
Środowisko szpitalne jest szczególnie predysponowane do rozwoju zakażeń. Przeprowadzone badania miały na celu określenie wrażliwości na antybiotyki 52 szczepów wyizolowanych ze środowiska oddziału urologicznego oraz określenie ich polimorfi zmu. Drobnoustroje pochodziły z powietrza pobranego metodą sedymentacyjną oraz z powierzchni przebadanych metodą kontaktową, z użyciem płytek odciskowych. Zidentyfi kowane szczepy poddane zostały ocenie lekowrażliwości, z zastosowaniem metody dyfuzyjno-krążkowej. Najczęściej izolowano szczepy koagulazoujemne z rodzaju Staphylococcus (CNS – coagulase-negative Staphylococci) – 43 szczepy (82,69%), spośród których najliczniej reprezentowany był gatunek S. haemolyticus (14 szczepów – 32,6%), 21 szczepów (48,8%) CNS było opornych na metycylinę (MRCNS – methicillin resistant coagulase- negative Staphylococci). Nie wyizolowano ze środowiska żadnego S. aureus. Największą wrażliwość wobec gronkowców wykazywały netylmycyna (97,7%), wankomycyna (95,3%) i amikacyna (93,0%). Najwięcej CNS było opornych na erytromycynę (37,2% szczepów wrażliwych), trimetoprim z sulfametoksazolem (46,5% szczepów wrażliwych) i cefoksytynę (metycylinę – 51,2% szczepów wrażliwych). Gronkowce pochodzące z powietrza charakteryzowały się mniejszą opornością na antybiotyki niż wyizolowane z badanych powierzchni. Ponadto ze środowiska oddziału urologicznego wyizolowano 6 szczepów pałeczek niefermentujących i 3 szczepy pałeczek należących do rodziny Enterobacteriaceae. Wszystkie szczepy pałeczek niefermentujących były wrażliwe na gentamycynę, tobramycynę i netylmycynę. Najmniejszą skuteczność miało połączenie ampicyliny z sulbaktamem (83,3% szczepów opornych). Pałeczki z rodziny Enterobacteriaceae były wrażliwe na piperacylinę z tazobaktamem, imipenem, cyprofl oksacynę, amikacynę, netylmycynę, tobramycynę, chloramfenikol i tetracyklinę. Najmniej skutecznymi lekami okazały się: trimetoprim z sulfametoksazolem, amoksycylina z kwasem klawulanowym, cefotaksym i cefamandol. Szczepy należące do tego samego gatunku wykazywały w większości przypadków różne wzory lekowrażliwości. Identyczny wzór lekowrażliwości, mimo różnego miejsca poboru materiału, występował u 2 szczepów S. haemolyticus i 2 szczepów Pseudomonas spp., co może świadczyć o ich wspólnym pochodzeniu. Ciągłe monitorowanie lekowrażliwości, zarówno szczepów klinicznych, jak też izolowanych ze środowiska szpitalnego, oraz stosowanie racjonalnej antybiotykoterapii jest konieczne w celu ograniczenia narastającej oporność bakterii na powszechnie stosowane antybiotyki.

Southern Thailand is one of hotspots for landslides. So far, the rainfall triggered landslides in this region caused many sufferers and fatalities. On the basis of the rainfall data that triggered ninety-two landslide events during 1988–2018 and the landslide susceptibility maps published by the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR), this study introduced rainfall event-duration (ED) thresholds, namely EDm and EDh thresholds, for the places classified as the modest and the huge susceptibility levels, respectively. The modest susceptibility is a combination of very low, low, and moderate landslide susceptibility levels indicated in DMR maps. The huge susceptibility is a combination of high and very high landslide susceptibility levels indicated in DMR maps. Indicated by an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC), the EDm and EDh thresholds yielded the significantly better predictability than the original threshold did. Furthermore, the EDm threshold yielded the perfect prediction with AUC of 1.00.

The paper is focused on changes of geomechanical properties with regard to loss of long-term resistance in studies on the influence of salt spray on the structure of selected rocks from Poland. The investigation has shown that the analyzed rock material shows variable susceptibility to this corrosive factor. The most susceptible to ageing by salt mist were Śmiłów sandstones, whose progressive deterioration was observed in subsequent cycles. Analysis of resistance parameters has shown decreased resistance to uniaxial compression exceeding 30% also in the case of the Józefów limestones. Limestones from Raciszyn have revealed high resistance to ageing by salt mist.

We provide a revised magnetostratigraphy and magnetic susceptibility stratigraphy of the most complete and thickest (to nearly 60 m) loess-palaeosol sequences in Ukraine spanning the past 1 My: the Roksolany (Black Sea Lowland) and Vyazivok (Dnieper Lowland) sections. The Matuyama-Brunhes boundary has been detected in both sequences in stratigraphically different palaeosol units according to current regional chronostratigraphic schemes. Hypotheses of a large magnetic lock-in depth at Vyazivok and lithostratigraphic incompleteness at Roksolany do not resolve this inconsistency. Instead, new chronostratigraphic models following the Chinese loess designation system, which are supported by correlation of the magnetic susceptibility records with the marine isotope record and estabilished magnetostratigraphic control points, are proposed. We conclude that the Matuyama-Brunhes reversal in the Roksolany and Vyazivok sections belongs to the same palaeosol unit, the Shyrokyne (according to our nomenclature, the U-S7), which corresponds to MIS 19. This novel interpretation resolves the inconsistency of the stratigraphic position of the Matuyama-Brunhes boundary in Ukrainian loess, ends long-standing debate regarding the chronostratigraphy of the Roksolany section, and allows precise correlation of the most representative loess-palaeosol sequences of Ukraine with those in the Danube Basin and the Chinese Loess Plateau. It is considered that the Roksolany Tephra in MIS 6 loess unit can be related to the L2 Tephra which is widely distributed in southeastern European loess records and lacustrine archives. In the light of our results, the Roksolany sequence may serve as a national lectostratotype of the Middle Zavadivka (U-L4) loess unit corresponding to MIS 10. Additionally, a generalized pedostratigraphic column of the past 1 My for central and southern Ukraine has been constructed and correlated with the Hungarian, Serbian and Chinese loess stratigraphies, as well as with the marine isotope record down to MIS 25.

Changes in the magnetic susceptibility of topsoil, especially in urban areas, are greatly affected by the deposition of anthropogenic metallic dust arising from industrial activities, the burning of fossil fuels, car wear, and tyre abrasion. In this study, magnetic susceptibility measurements were carried out in vertical soil profiles of 30.0 cm depth from the surface at 10.0 cm intervals in about 431 locations within the Abuja metropolis with a view to investigate the penetration ability of magnetic pollutants in the ground. From the obtained data, 3-D surface contour maps were plotted for different depths. The results show a magnetic susceptibility decrease from the surface down the ground to the depth of 30.0cm; most of the recorded susceptibilities were of an anthropogenic origin rather than pedogenic activities. This indicates that the anthropogenic dust depositions are mostly a surface phenomenon and may therefore not pose a risk to groundwater aquifers and near surface wells.

During our study we examined 19 most popular Polish potato cultivars. Susceptibility of tubers to bacterial infection was assessed by two methods: direct injection of bacterial suspension into tuber tissue and clay-inoculation method. The cultivars were divided into three groups: tolerant, relatively susceptible and susceptible. Elida, Bila and Vistula proved to be the most susceptible potato cultivars whereas Ekra and Mila the most resistant. Some of the cultivars such as Oda had resistant peel and susceptible tissue. Therefore during storage of Oda-like cultivars healthy and undamaged tubers are so important.
Najważniejszą rolę w ograniczaniu chorób bakteryjnych odgrywa profilaktyka, między innymi stosowanie odmian odpornych lub wykazujących wysoką tolerancję w stosunku do patogena. Nasze badania objęły 19 powszechnie uprawianych w Polsce odmian ziemniaka. Ocenę podatności bulw ziemniaka na infekcję bakteryjną oraz gnicie przeprowadzono dwiema metodami: metodą powierzchniowej inokulacji przy pomocy gliny zawierającej bakterie oraz metodą iniekcji miąższu zawiesiną bakteryjną końcówkami pipet. Na podstawie uzyskanych wyników badane odmiany zostały zaliczone do trzech grup: tolerancyjne, średnio wrażliwe i podatne. Najwrażliwszymi odmianami okazały się Elida, Bila i Vistula, zaś najodporniejsze były Ekra i Mila. Niektóre odmiany, takie jak np. Oda, charakteryzowały się odporną skórką i podatnym miąższem. W ich przypadku szczególnie ważne jest więc przechowywanie zdrowych i nieuszkodzonych mechanicznie bulw. Opisane badania mogą być wykorzystane przy doborze odmian ziemniaka w uprawie w zależności od warunków klimatycznych, a także w przechowalnictwie.

The aim of the study was determine activity of chitosan ascorbate against 17 strains of Helicobacter pylori. The strains were isolated from gingival pockets (7 strains), atherosclerotic plaques from carotid and femoral (10 strains). Chitosan was obtained from krill chitin and deacetylation degree was equal 60%. The ratio of ascorbic to chitosan was equal 1. The susceptibility of rods was determined by means of plate dilution technique in Brucella agar with 5% sheep’s blood. The inoculum contained 105 CFU/spot. Incubation was performed in anaerobic jars with Campy Pak (BBL) for 48 hrs. The MIC was interpreted as the lowest concentration of chitosan ascorbate inhibiting the growth of bacteria. The results indicated, that chitosan ascorbate at the lowest concentrations was active against 35% of the strains. The Helicobacter pylori rods isolated from gingival pockets were the highest susceptible than isolated from atherosclerotic plaques.

WSTĘP: Celem pracy była analiza związków pomiędzy podatnością na hipnozę a cechami temperamentu, takimi jak: żwawość, perseweratywność, wrażliwość sensoryczna, reaktywność emocjonalna, wytrzymałość i aktywność. MATERIAŁ I METODY: W badaniach wykorzystano Skalę Wyobraźni Twórczej (SWT) Wilson i Barbera oraz Formalną Charakterystykę Zachowania – Kwestionariusz Temperamentu (FCZ-KT). Badaniem zostały objęte osoby z jednego z liceów ogólnokształcących. Analizie statystycznej poddano wyniki 120 osób (89 kobiet i 31 mężczyzn) w wieku 17–19 lat. WYNIKI: Z analizy korelacji wynika, że wrażliwość sensoryczna koreluje istotnie z podatnością na hipnozę. Na podstawie charakterystyki rozkładu zmiennej hipnoza oraz testu t-Studenta stwierdzono, że różnice między kobietami i mężczyznami są nieistotne statystycznie pod względem podatności na hipnozę. Na podstawie analizy regresji (zmienne temperamentalne a hipnoza) zaobserwowano, że w zasadzie tylko jedna zmienna daje możliwość predykcji podatności na hipnozę – wrażliwość sensoryczna (p = 0,003). Wykonano również analizę dyskryminacyjną; na podstawie zmiennych temperamentalnych można poprawnie zaklasyfikować 68% przypadków różniących się zmienną hipnoza (grupy skrajne). WNIOSKI: Stwierdzono, że wrażliwość sensoryczna koreluje istotnie z podatnością na hipnozę. Podobnie, spośród cech temperamentalnych jedynie wrażliwość sensoryczna jest jej predyktorem. Nie stwierdzono różnic w zakresie podatności na hipnozę w zależności od płci.
INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between hypnotizability and temperamental traits such as liveliness, perseverance, sensory sensitivity, emotional reactivity, endurance and activeness. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study involved 120 students (89 females and 31 males) of a secondary school, aged 17–19. The Creative Imagination Scale (SWT) by Wilson and Barber and the Formal Characteristics of Behavior – Temperament Questionnaire (FCZ-KT) were used in the research. The results were analyzed statistically. RESULTS: Sensory sensitivity was shown to correlate significantly with a susceptibility to hypnosis. No statistically significant differences in hypnotizability between the sexes were identified. Moreover, extreme groups of individuals representing the highest and the lowest hypnotic ability were identified. Sensory sensitivity (p = 0.003) was found to be the only predictor variable in regression analysis for hypnotizability. Discriminant analysis revealed that 68% of cases differing in the ‘hypnosis’ variable can be correctly classified on the basis of the temperament variables. CONCLUSIONS: This study showed that there is a relationship between the temperament trait – sensory sensitivity and hypnotizability. Sensory sensitivity also proved to be a predictor of hypnotizability. There are no differences between sexes in terms of hypnotizability.

Environmental dusts of urban and industrial origin are one of the most important factors responsible for air and soil pollution - mainly because of heavy metals content. In this work a dust collected from the acoustic barriers of E-77 expressway (Poland) has been investigated. Chemical analysis was performed by means of atomic absorption spectrometer with flame atomization (F-AAS). Fe, Al and Zn metals dominate in the investigated road dusts. Mossbauer spectra collected at room temperature enabled the identification of several iron-containing phases in the dust. Some traces of hematite and magnetite have been found as well as alfa-Fe phase in ferromagnetic state. A significant component could be interpreted as pure iron in paramagnetic state. The dominating doublet in the spectrum of high quadrupole splitting could correspond to iron carbonates. Complementary measurements of low-field AC magnetic susceptibility confirmed a different metal content in the road dust samples collected from different altitudes of acoustic barriers.

Urinary tract infection (UTI) is one of the most common diseases encountered worldwide. In this study, urine samples were collected from thirty women of child bearing age (18-25 years) to determine the prevalence of bacteriuria, as well as the presence of pus cells and white blood cells which are signs of infection. The urine microscopy result revealed that 7 (23.3%) of the sample had greater than 10 leucocytes per high power field. Only four of the samples had a significant number of pus cells. The bacteria count recorded ranged from 25 cfu/0.001 ml to 276 cfu/0.001 ml. Of the samples, 13 were positive for bacteriuria having bacterial count greater than 100 cfu/0.001 ml. The bacteria isolates include Klebsiella spp. (3.8%), Streptococcus spp. (2.5%). Escherichia coli (62.5%) and Staphylococcus spp. (21.2%). Of these, Klebsiella spp. was the least prevalent and Escherichia coli had the highest number of occurrence. These organisms were very sensitive to Ciprofloxacin, Pefloxacin, Zinnacef and Gentamycin according to the antimicrobial susceptibility test carried out. Ciprofloxacin was found to be the most effective antibiotics against all the bacterial isolates. Here, zones of inhibition ranged from 15 mm (Streptococcus spp.) to 20 mm (Escherichia coli). All the bacterial isolates were resistant to Amoxicillin, with zones of inhibition between 11 (Klebsiella spp., Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus spp.) and 13 mm (Streptococcus spp.). Since the prevalence of asymptomatic bacteriuria is high, early diagnosis and proper treatment is necessary in order to prevent it from becoming symptomatic.

Landslides are one of the most prominent processes degrading the Beskidy Mts. slopes. Susceptibility assessment is based on the detailed mapping of the Dukla commune (235 km2) at the scale 1: 10,000 in frames of the project Landslide Counteracting System. The terrain affected by landslides is 19.59 km2, which is 8.34% of the researched area. The largest number of landslides can be found in the Beskid Dukielski Mts. area, where nearly 78% of all landslide areas are concentrated. Analysis of landslide-causing factors was performed using the index of entropy method. The following five factors were considered: lithology, slope inclination, slope aspect, distance to faults, and distance to drainage. The most important role in the development of mass movements in the study area is played by slope inclination (0.0079) and lithology of siliciclastic flysch (0.0066). The method applied also contributed to devising a landslide susceptibility map of considerable accuracy at 90.5%. The analyses of the landslide factors have proven that understanding of geology and landforms is not only of cognitive significance, but adds to practical applications in spatial management. The studies confirmed usefulness of large-scale mapping of landslides and applying statistical methods and GIS techniques in the spatial analysis of landform transformations. The obtained landslide susceptibility map can be a basis for assessing landslide risk. High and very high landslide susceptibility classes cover nearly 50% of the study area.

Soil contamination with rare earth metals (REE) can have both direct and indirect connection with industrial activity and ore-exploration. In the studies conducted so far, the presence of rare earth elements in coal seams, coal combustion waste as well as fly ash was found. It is important that detailed studies of the REE content in soil were not carried out in Poland. Until now, in a few studies, a high content of cerium and lanthanum was found in relation to the average content of the torn ones in the world. This work focuses on the areas under the influence of the industry associated with the extraction and combustion of hard coal, but also with other types of industry. Analyzes of REE content in soil were conducted in selected areas of the Upper Silesian Industrial Region and Norway, located near the Bjornevatn mine. In study areas, soil samples were collected and used for chemical and magnetometric measurements. Firstly, concentrations of REE were determined, and after that soil samples were used to measure soil magnetic susceptibility. Finally, statistical analyses were performed in order to check the correlation between REE concentrations in soil and soil magnetic susceptibility.

Opis:
The article concerns potential harmful effects of exposure to lead. Although the occurrence of severe lead poisoning has receded in several countries, occupational exposure resulting in moderate and clinically symptomatic toxicity is still common. An earlier and precise characterization of an individual response is obligatory in order to assess the possible risks for human health. Biomarkers may fill important gaps in the path from exposure to a disease. Specifically speaking, emerging (DNA double strand breaks and telomeric DNA erosion) and validated (micronuclei induction and chromosomal aberrations) biomarkers of genotoxicity seem to provide evidence for the assessment of molecular and cellular damage. Moreover, identification of genetic variability with a key role in modulating genotoxic damage may help minimize risks for susceptible subjects. Further investigations are naturally needed to properly define their diagnostic and/or prognostic value as “early warning” signs of a long-term risk for a subsequent clinically overt disease.

Bladder cancer (BCa) and prostate cancer (PCa) are genitourinary cancers which constitute significant health problems in men and in which environmental factors play an important role. Understanding the genetic susceptibility to BCa or PCa and occupational exposure is paramount to improving cancer prevention and early detection. The aim of this review article was to address the scientific evidence on the genetic risk factors and occupational exposure associated with the occurrence of BCa and PCa. The authors identified relevant original articles that have been published between 1994 and 2023. Variations of the following search terms: “gene” and “occupational” combined with one of the following terms: “bladder cancer” or “prostate cancer” were applied for the search purpose. The authors found 342 publications of which 50 population studies met their requirements for gene-occupation interactions. In total, 34 full-text manuscripts were about BCa and 16 about PCa. These research examines the genes involved in detoxification processes of xenobiotics (glutathione S-transferase, N-acetyltransferase, cytochrome P450, UDP-glucuronosyltransferase), oxidative stress (glutathione peroxidase 1, manganese superoxide dismutase, catalase), altering DNA repair capacity (X-ray repair cross-complementing 1, base excision repair, nucleotide excision repair), tumour suppression (TP53 gene), and vitamin D pathway (vitamin D receptor gene). The role of genetic factors in the occupational exposure has not been conclusively established, but it appears the possibility of genetic involvement. Determination of environmentally responsive genes provides important mechanistic implications for the etiology of occupational cancers, and valuable input in occupational exposure limits set by taking genetic susceptibility into account. Three distinct alloys: Fe86Zr7Nb1Cu1B5, Fe82Zr7Nb2Cu1B8, and Fe81Pt5Zr7Nb1Cu1B5 were characterized both magnetically and structurally. The samples, obtained with spinning roller method as a ribbons 3 mm in width and 20 μm thick, were investigated as-quenched and after each step of a multi steps heating treatment procedure. Each sample was annealed at four steps, fifteen minutes at every temperature, starting from 573K+600K up to +700K depending on type of alloy. Mössbauer spectroscopy data and transmission electron microscope (HRE M) pictures confirmed that the as-quenched samples are fully amorphous. This is not changed after the first stages of treatment heating leads to a reduction of free volumes. The heating treatment has a great influence on the magnetic susceptibilities. The treatment up to 600K improves soft magnetic properties: an χ increase was observed, from about 400 to almost 1000 for the samples of alloys without Pt, and from about 200 to 450 at maximum, for the Fe81Pt5Zr7Nb1Cu1B5. Further heating, at more elevated temperatures, leads to magnetic hardening of the samples. Curie temperatures, established from the location of Hopkinson’s maxima on the χ(T) curve are in very good agreement with those obtained from the data of specific magnetization, σ(T), measured in a field of 0.75T. As a critical parameter β was chosen to be equal 0.36 for these calculations, it confirmed that the alloys may be considered as ferromagnetic of Heisenberg type. Heating treatment resulted in decreasing of TC. These changes are within a range of several K.

W artykule przedstawiono oddziaływanie impulsów elektromagnetycznych o dużej mocy i wysokiej częstotliwości (w.cz.) na infrastrukturę techniczną obiektów budowlanych. Stosowanie nowoczesnych rozwiązań technicznych w zarządzaniu budynkiem inteligentnym, tj. sterowanie zasobami ludzkimi i systemami automatyki, efektywne zarządzanie przestrzenią budynku, wymaga zastosowania dużej liczby zintegrowanych systemów elektronicznych. Z technicznego punktu widzenia inteligentny budynek to taki obiekt budowlany, w którym wszystkie podsystemy (np. bezpieczeństwa technicznego, klimatyzacji, wentylacji i ogrzewania, oświetlenia, zasilania elektroenergetycznego, teleinformatycznego itd.), współdziałając ze sobą, tworzą przyjazne dla człowieka środowisko. Zastosowanie specjalizowanych układów elektronicznych, procesorów, mikrokontrolerów w tych podsystemach może być przyczynkiem zastosowania broni E jako alternatywy ataku terrorystycznego - obezwładniającego systemy automatyki zarządzania budynkiem [1, 2].
The paper presents the impact of electromagnetic pulses (high power and high frequency pulses - weapon E) on technical infrastructure of buildings [1], The use of modern technologies in intelligent building management i.e. human resources, control and automation systems, efficient buildings space management, requires using a large number of integrated electronic systems. From technical point of view, the intelligent building is a building in which all subsystems (e.g. technical security, air conditioning, ventilation, lighting, power, electricity, etc.), interact with each other and create human-friendly environment. The use of specialized electronic systems, processors, microcontrollers in these subsystems may be a trigger of the use of weapons E as an alternative of terrorist attack - disabling automatic building management systems.

Flooding, often triggered by heavy rainfall, is a common natural disaster in Indonesia, and is the third most common type of disaster in Sumedang Regency. Hence, flood-susceptibility mapping is essential for flood management. The primary challenge in this lies in the complex, non-linear relationships between indices and risk levels. To address this, the application of random forest (RF) and frequency ratio (FR) methods has been explored. Ten flood-conditioning factors were determined from the references: the distance from a river, elevation, geology, geomorphology, lithology, land use/land cover, rainfall, slope, soil type, and topographic wetness index (TWI). The 35 flood locations from the flood-inventory map were selected, and the remaining 18 flood locations were used for justifying the outcomes. The flooded areas from the RF model were 28.39%; the rest (71.61%) were non-flooded areas. Also, the flooded areas from the FR method were 8.02%, and the non-flooded areas were 91.98%. The AUC for both methods was a similar value – 83.0%. This result is quite accurate and can be used by policymakers to prevent and manage future flooding in the Sumedang area. These results can also be used as materials for updating existing flood-susceptibility maps.

Manganese carbonate ore belongs to weakly magnetic minerals, and its co-associated minerals are mainly non-magnetic minerals, which can be separated from gangue minerals at high magnetic field intensity. However, manganese grade and recovery of magnetic separation concentrate of manganese carbonate ore are low in actual production. Therefore, the influences of manganese carbonate particle size, magnetic field intensity, volume susceptibility, pulse stroke, pH, and other factors were studied. The optimal test conditions for manganese carbonate ore recovery by high-gradient magnetic separation were predicted through the calculation results. The results show that the particle radius of manganese carbonate is 0.020 mm, the pulse impulse time is 200 r/min, and the magnetic field intensity is 0.9 T. The optimum condition test was carried out with Qianbei manganese carbonate ore as the material. The test results show that the optimum conditions are the particle radius of 0.074-0.019 mm, pulse impulse time of 200 r/min, and magnetic field intensity of 1.2 T. The reason for the deviation is that the actual ore has a fine distribution particle size, many associative bodies, complex composition, and serious agglomeration, resulting in variable particle volume susceptibility. The capture yield increases with the increase of magnetic field intensity and volume susceptibility but decreases with the increase of pulse. The lower the surface potential of manganese carbonate, the higher the recovery of manganese carbonate. The grade of manganese concentrate was 19.06% and the recovery was 76.85%. Mixed manganese concentrate with a grade of 18.04% and recovery of 87.14% was obtained by adding drugs and changing the grinding method.

Sand dunes are the most prominent subjects of geological and geomorphological interest along the Curonian Spit - a mega-barrier that separates the Curonian Lagoon from the Baltic Sea. To date, an assessment of various parameters of migrating dunes along the spit has been based on comparative analysis of old maps or aerial and satellite images, as well as geodetic measurements. These investigations have allowed assessment of dune dynamics over a relatively short historical period (~1700s to present). The most recent detailed investigations of the Dead (Grey) Dunes along the Lithuanian part of the spit using ground-penetrating radar (GPR) and magnetic susceptibility (MS) surveys, supported by a radiocarbon (14C) chronological framework of palaeosols and infrared optically stimulated luminescence (IR-OSL) ages of sand horizons, have advanced our understanding of aeolian landscape evolution. The interpretation of dune activity and stability phases has been generally based on IR-OSL dating results of the sand layers located between radiocarbon-dated palaeosols. However, the influence of soil-forming processes on the IR-OSL dating results related to possible migration of natural radioactive isotopes via aeolian sand layers has not been previously considered. Hypotheses of dune reactivation and migration caused by abrupt regional climate shifts, catastrophic forest fires, anthropogenic influence, and more local forcings have been tested. An integrated approach to dune investigations has offered an estimate of the rates of sand accumulation and key phases of aeolian dynamics during both stormy and calm periods, as well as helped to extend the record of dune evolution to the mid-Holocene. The palaeoenvironmental and palaeodynamic reconstructions of the Dead Dunes suggest that this mid-Holocene phase of dune activity was of a local character and likely did not exceed several centuries.

Introduction and objective. The aim was to make an exact diagnosis of 20 strains using molecular biological methods which were isolated from the atmosphere of the inpatient rooms in the Oncology and other departments of the Ege University Medical Faculty Hospital, and identified as Aspergillus fumigatus through phenotypic tests, and to determine their antibiotic susceptibility patterns. Materials and method. It was confirmed that the 20 phenotypically-identified A. fumigatus strains belonged to the section Fumigati after they were tested by the ITS-PCR method. Their sequence analysis was performed and the results sent to the NCBI GenBank, and their accession numbers were obtained. For their exact diagnosis at the species level, the β-tub (β-tubulin) and rodA (RodletA) genes were examined with the multiplex PCR. Anti-fungal susceptibility of the 20 strains was determined according to the M38-A2 standards. Results. As a result of ITS-PCR, it was confirmed that 19 of the 20 strains identified as A. fumigatus through the phenotypic methods belonged to the section Fumigati. However, after the detection of β-tub and rodA genes, all 20 strains were identified as A. fumigatus. Conclusion. Although the results of the phenotypic and molecular biological tests applied to filamentous fungi do not often overlap, in this study, the results obtained from the molecular analysis confirmed the results of the phenotypic tests. However, 1 of the 20 strains phenotypically-identified as A. fumigatus was identified as Penicillium spp. as a result of ITSPCR and sequence analysis. On the other hand, the profile obtained from β-tub and rodA tests indicated that the strain was A. fumigatus. Based on these results, this strain is thought to belong to the Aspergilloides genus which has the features of both genera.

Investigations have been carried out in order to reconstruct the palaeoenvironmental changes during the earliest Pleistocene interglacials and to establish their relation to global environmental changes. Three sections in east Lithuania exposing the earliest Pleistocene lacustrine deposits lying between the Kalviai (Glacial B, Nidanian?) and Dzūkija (Sanian 1) and between Dzūkija (Sanian 1) and Dainava (Sanian 2) glacial deposits were selected for study. Until now the Šlavė-2 and Vindžiūnai-136 successions were considered to have formed during the Vindžiūnai (Augustovian?, Malopolanian) Interglacial and the Kudrė-915 succession during the Turgeliai (Cromerian IV, Ferdynandovian) Interglacial. Geochemical, palaeomagnetic, magnetic susceptibility, anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility and palaeobotanical proxies were applied to establish the cyclicity and dynamics of palaeoenvironmental change. The data obtained enable the subdivision of the section into units related to changes in the sedimentary environment. The Matuyama/Brunhes boundary and Jaramillo subchron of the Matuyama chron have been recognized in the Šlavė section. The results enable correction of the stratigraphic position of the sections studied. The sedimentation in the Šlavė section took place during the Early Pleistocene, while that at the Vindžiūnai-136 and Kudrė-915 took place during two different Middle Pleistocene interglacials.

This paper presents the results of investigations into the microstructure and magnetic properties of Fe86Zr7Nb1Cu1B5, Fe82Zr7Nb2Cu1B8 and Fe81Pt5Zr7Nb1Cu1B5 alloys. The alloys were investigated in their as-quenched state, in the form of thin ribbons with approximate dimensions as follows: width 3 mm and thickness 20 μm. The investigations were performed utilizing Mössbauer spectrometry and X-ray diffractometry. Also, an evaluation of the low-field magnetic susceptibility and measurements of the magnetization versus temperature and magnetizing field were performed.

Praca dotyczy diagnozowania wycieków z rurociągów. Rurociągi są obiektami trudnymi do diagnozowania, zwłaszcza w stanie z wyciekiem. Powstaje zatem problem polepszania ich podatności diagnostycznej, która ma zasadniczy wpływ na skuteczność realizowanej działalności diagnostycznej. Pokazano, że polepszenie podatności diagnostycznej rurociągów można osiągnąć dzięki nowej opracowanej metodzie, umownie nazwanej metodą słabych interakcji międzyobiektowych. Metoda ta polega na pozyskiwaniu nowej cennej informacji diagnostycznej. Informacją tą są sygnały interakcji, wynikające z pracy obiektu badawczego (korektora) - dołączonego do badanego (diagnozowanego) rurociągu. W pracy przedstawiono wyniki eksperymentalnej weryfikacji proponowanej metody, przeprowadzonej na stanowisku badawczym z rurociągiem modelowym.
This work concerns diagnosing of leaks from pipelines. Pipelines are difficult objects to diagnosing, especially in state with leak. Therefore, there is a problem of improving their diagnostic susceptibility, which has significant influence on the efficacy of the executed diagnostic activity. There is shown that is possible improving diagnostics susceptibility thanks to a new elaborated method, conventionally named the method of weak interobject interactions. This method consists in acquiring piece of new valuable diagnostic information, which are signals of interactions, resulted from work a testing object (corrector) - specially joined to a tested (diagnosed) pipeline. In this work the results experimental verification of proposed method, conducted on special pipeline model station are presented.

Within the years 2002-2004 12 genotypes of oat (Bachmat, Budrys, Bohun, Chwat, Cwał, Deresz, Hetman, Rajtar, Sam, Szakal, STH 5501, STH 5601) were examined to determine their susceptibility to Fusarium crookwellense. Opis:
This study involves the integration of multiple thematic datasets for landslide susceptibility assessment through spatial prediction models. The proposed methodology has been applied in the Bystrzanka-Biczyska area (Beskid Niski Mts., Carpathians Mts., Poland), characterised by a very high density of landslides. The susceptibility assessment has been based on an indirect bivariate statistical analysis ("Weights of Evidence" modelling technique, Bonham-Carter et al., 1989) performed in order to predict the occurrence of an event (landslide) where well-known evidences (predictor variables) are available. According to the relative importance of each evidence, a landslide susceptibility map has been produced. Observing final prediction results, it is concluded that the susceptibility map gives useful information both on present instability of the area and its possible future evolution in agreement with the morphological evolution of the area.

A comparison of the HV-105 Křtiny gamma-ray log (carbonate platform margin and proximal slope, thickness of Frasnian beds ~270 m) with the three times thinner gamma-ray spectrometric section from Mokrá (inner platform, Frasnian ~93.5m) has significantly increased the reliability of stratigraphic correlation between the outer and inner platform areas, i.e. it has allowed strengthening of the detailed links between conodont-bearing and barren sequences. The detailed gamma-ray and magnetic susceptibility patterns also provide promising clues which might help trace the "punctata Zone" stratigraphic equivalents, located far in the interior of the platform stromatoporoid-coral facies.

Two sections (Daumantai-1 and Daumantai-3) in East Lithuania expose Early-Middle Pleistocene lacustrine-alluvial, deposits which lie on a thin Neogene layer and on older Devonian rocks. They are overlain by glacigenic deposits. Geochemical, palaeomagnetic, magnetic susceptibility, plant macrofossil, and diatom investigations were performed to determine the changes in the sedimentary environment. Cluster analysis of the geochemical variables (10 major elements, 16 trace elements, total organic and inorganic carbon) revealed the element groups and factors. The lowermost units are characterized by a major influence of local material and significant fluctuations in heavy mineral content. These fluctuations might reflect short-term climate changes. The transitional units have more expressed trends, especially as regards the trace elements and Zr/Ti. The uppermost units are characterized by a slight influence of local material and small fluctuations in trace elements. The data analysed enable the subdivision of the section into units related to changes in sedimentary environment. The boundary of the Bruhnes/Matuyama reversal in the Daumantai-1 and Daumantai-3 sections was detected by palaeomagnetic studies and enables the stratigraphical correlation of these deposits.

This paper contains selected results of identification modeling of Polish Electric Power Exchange (EPE). In order to obtain EPE system model it was performed identification based on figures of EPEís Day-Ahead Market. During performing identification process, parametric arx model in System Identification Toolbox environment was utilized. Generated EPE parametric model has been further used for performing simulation tests and realization of susceptibility testing. Suitable models were implemented in Simulink software. As a result of simulation and susceptibility testing, many interesting findings has been delivered.

Antimicrobial resistance in Salmonella has been associated with the presence of integrons and many other resistance mechanisms contributing to the spread of antimicrobial-resistant genes within and between livestock and human populations. In this study, the presence of Salmonella serovars from broiler and cattle samples and their antimicrobial resistance, integrons, tet resistance, ESBL and resistance genes carriage were investigated. Total of 209 litter (broiler farms) and fecal samples (cattle farms) were examined by bacteriological procedures, susceptibilities against 18 antimicrobials and genes carriages were detected by singleplex and multiplex PCR. A total of 46/209 (22 %) Salmonella strains were isolated. Six different Salmonella serotypes from 46 Salmonella isolates were identified and the most common serotype was S. Infantis 38 (82.6%) from broiler litter; followed by S. Kitenge 3 (6.5 %) from fecal sample. The highest occurrence of resistance observed for penicilline (46/46, %100), lincomycin (43/46, 93.5%) and 42 isolates (43/46, 93.5%) exhibited MDR. The overall occurrence of class 1, 2 and 3 integrons carrying Salmonella in tested samples were 63.04% (29/46), 43.5% (20/46) and 84.8% (39/46) respectively. Out of the 27 isolates produced an ESBL, mostly CTX and TEM. On 46 Salmonella isolates, in 16 (34.8%) Tcr’ genes were determined. Genotypic and phenotipic detection of ESBL genes found within integrons from Salmonella isolates from different sources (broiler and cattle) can provide powerful information about health and economic risk associated with transferable multidrug resistance.

Celem badań było określenie zróżnicowania podatności na fuzaryjną zgorzel siewek 12 odmian pszenżyta ozimego oraz 6 odmian pszenicy ozimej pochodzących z Hodowli Roślin DANKO. Ziarniaki inokulowano Fusarium culmorum, izolatem IPO348-01 o średniej patogeniczności, pochodzącym z Instytutu Ochrony Roślin w Wageningen, w Holandii. Dokonano oceny stopnia porażenia korzeni i pierwszego liścia siewek w pięciostopniowej skali, opisanej przez Chełkowskiego i Mańkę (1983). W celu określenia redukcji przyrostów korzeni i pierwszego liścia siewki, wykonano pomiary masy roślin kombinacji kontrolnej oraz inokulowanej. Zarówno u pszenicy, jak i pszenżyta obserwowano znacznie bardziej destrukcyjny wpływ patogena na system korzeniowy niż na liście w ciągu 7 dni trwania testu. Wyrażało się to średnio 1,6 krotnie większą redukcją masy korzeni niż liści. Z przeprowadzonych badań wynika, że średnia masa względna liści pszenicy i pszenżyta była podobna i wynosiła odpowiednio 64,99% kontroli i 63,85% kontroli. Jednak u pszenżyta występowały odmiany mniej podatne niż u pszenicy np. Grenado (masa względna 86,72% kontroli), czy Disco (masa względna 83,92% kontroli). Średnia masa względna korzeni pszenżyta (38,58% kontroli) była niższa niż pszenicy (51,77% kontroli), co wskazuje na większe uszkodzenie systemu korzeniowego pszenżyta niż pszenicy. Wyniki te potwierdza również ocena porażenia korzeni w pięciostopniowej skali bonitacyjnej, gdzie średnie porażenie korzeni pszenicy wyniosło 2,89 a pszenżyta 3,61.
The aim of this study was determination of susceptibility of 12 winter triticale cultivars and 6 winter wheat cultivars originating from DANKO Plant Breeders Ltd. to Fusarium seedling blight. Germinating kernels were inoculated with Fusarium culmorum, medium pathogenic isolate IPO348-01, originating from Plant Protection Institute, Wageningen, Netherlands (Wojciechowski et al. 1997). Severity of root and leaf infection was evaluated with the 5-degree scale application described by Chełkowski and Mańka (1983). In order to determine reduction of root and leaf growth, the weight of inoculated and control plants was measured. Both triticale and wheat roots were more susceptible to pathogen infection than leaves in one week test. The root weight reduction was 1.6 times higher in relation to leaf weight reduction. Mean relative weight of wheat and triticale leaves were similar (respectively 64.99% and 63.85% of controls). However some triticale cultivars proved to be less susceptible as compared to mean for wheat e.g. Grenado (relative weight 86.72% of control) and Disco (relative weight 83.92% of control). Mean relative weight of triticale roots (38.58% of control ) was lower when compared to wheat (51.77% of control), therefore infection affected triticale roots stronger than wheat roots. Mean root blight score in 5-degree scale was also lower for wheat (2.89) in comparison with triticale root blight score (3.61).

The aim of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of commercial gradient test (Etest) in the detection of triazole resistant Aspergillus fumigatus isolates using reference microdilution methods and the analysis of sequences of the cyp 51A gene. The study was performed on twenty clinical isolates which were identified as Aspergillus fumigatus based on the DNA sequences of the ITS1-2 fragment of ribosomal DNA and the β-tubulin gene, out of them seventeen isolates showed wild-type cyp51A sequence and three were positive for the mutation TR34/L98H. All isolates were tested for the susceptibility to itraconazole (ITZ), voriconazole (VOR) and posaconasole (POS) using microdilution methods, according to EUCAST and CLSI protocols, as well as using Etest. The results of microdilution and Etests were analysed separately according to clinical breakpoints (CBP) defined by EUCAST version 7.0 and epidemiological cut off values (ECV). Etest as well as reference methods excellently recognised the WT isolates, which were susceptible to all tested triazoles, regardless of the method and CBP or ECV criteria used. The Etest recognized three non-WT isolates as resistant or intermediately sensitive to ITZ and POS and one as resistant to VOR. The categorical concordance between Etests and EUCAST and Etests and the CLSI method ranged from 90 to 100%. The interpretation of the results obtained from routine A. fumigatus Etests requires great caution. The use of the confirmative examinations with reference AST methods as well as with molecular tests is recommended.

Landslides determine increases and decreases in specific soil compounds which is affecting soil fertility. The recovery of soil fertility is a long process and may be used as an indicator of the landslide age and can contribute to the management plan of the affected area. In order to add to data about soil properties affected by landslides, the current study focuses on a young and shallow landslide from the western part of the Transylvanian Depression. Soil samples were analysed from a physico-chemical point of view (pH, organic matter - OM, total organic carbon - TOC, major cations, and iron content) in two places, at between 0 and 60 cm depth (inside and outside the landslide). The results obtained showed lower values of pH inside the landslide, low values of TOC and rock fragments in both places studied (inside and outside the landslide) and no differences in soil texture between disturbed and undisturbed soil. The ammonium, magnesium and calcium content was higher outside the landslide, the sodium level was slightly higher outside the landslide, while the potassium concentration was higher inside the landslide. This study offers new data regarding recovery of soil fertility and highlights the importance of gaining knowledge on soil properties of relevance to future measures to increase the fertility of agricultural soils.

W standardach międzynarodowych ustalono warunki dotyczące emisyjności i odporności na zakłócenia elektromagnetyczne produkowanych wyrobów. Produkcja obrabiarek wymaga zastosowanie standardów na znacznie wyższym poziomie niż produkcja typowych produktów użytkowych. Badania podzespołów elektronicznych przeznaczonych do zastosowań w budowie obrabiarek wymagają odpowiedniego dostosowania laboratoriów badawczych do obowiązujących standardów międzynarodowych.

Opis:
Safety of carrying bulk cargoes is an important problem in all stages of the supply chain. At the moment, soybean seed cake is one of the many bulk cargoes, which is the best substitute of protein in the composition of fodder. During the transport, soybean seed cake is mostly under the form of loose cargo and is carried by various and specialized means of sea and overland transport. There are occurred the quality changes of soybean seed cake during the transport processes that are understood as the followed cyclical operations of warehousing, handling and transportation by various means of transport. A lot of characteristics are subject to changes. They are decisive in the nutritional value and in the susceptibility of transport, and they are determining the basic quality-creative factors in the scope of usable quality called functional quality. Maintaining of initial quality of soybean seed in transport process depends on providing the optimal condition of storage, handling and transportation. The influence of functional quality factor that means susceptibility to oxidation in relation to safety of soybean seed cake sea transport is presented. The results of researches are provided on diagrams and evaluated by statistic methods.

The genus Scopulariopsis is a common soil saprotroph and has been isolated from air, organic waste and also from plant, animal and human tissues. Scopulariopsis has mainly been associated in humans with superficial mycoses, but it has also been described as the cause of subcutaneous and invasive infections. The most common aetiological agent of infections in humans is Scopulariopsis brevicaulis. This species has been reported to be resistant in vitro to broad-spectrum antifungal agents available today. The aim of the study was to establish in vitro antifungal susceptibility of 35 S. brevicaulis strains against amphotericin B (AMB), flucytosine (FC), caspofungin (CAS), terbinafine (TER), ciclopirox (CIC), voriconazole (VOR), clotrimazole (CTR), miconazole (MCZ), econazole (ECO), ketoconazole (KET), itraconazole (ITR), and fluconazole (FLU). Antifungal susceptibility tests were evaluated by an agar diffusion method (Neo-Sensitabs, Rosco, Denmark). AMB, FC, CAS, ITR and FLU showed no antifungal activity against S. brevicaulis. TER, CIC, CTR, KET, VOR, ECO, and MCZ revealed inhibitory activity for S. brevicaulis, but it varied for each of the drugs. The best antifungal effect was observed for TER and CIC. All isolates had large inhibition zones for TER and CIC. CTR was also inhibitory for all tested S. brevicaulis isolates, but the diameters of inhibition zones were smaller than for TER and CIC. Nearly 89% isolates showed inhibition zones for KET and the mean diameter of the inhibition zone was comparable to CTR. The least antifungal activity exhibited VOR, ECO and MCZ. Because of the multiresistance of S. brevicaulis, infections due to this species may not respond to particular antifungal treatment and other therapeutic approaches should be considered e.g., combined therapy and/or surgery.

Integrated bio- and magnetostratigraphic data from the Lower to Upper Berriasian of the pelagic succession at Barlya (Western Balkan, Bulgaria) are presented. The investigated interval, 24 m thick, covers the top of the Calpionella elliptica, Calpionellopsis simplex and Calpionellopsis oblonga subzones. Magnetozones from the upper part of M17r up to M16n were identified. The boundary between the Elliptica and Simplex subzones correlates with the lower part of M16r, while the boundary between the Simplex and Oblonga subzones is situated in the lower part of M16n. The magnetic susceptibility reveals an increasing trend from the middle part of M16r which accounts for the increasing supply of fine clastic sediments to the basin.

Low susceptibility was observed for soils under the forest terrain whereas higher susceptibility was measured on the open area. The presence of magnetic particles of the anthropogenic origin in soils of Lasek Łęgowski and Łąki Nowohuckie areas was discovered.

The present study was carried out in the years 2010–2012 in the fields of the Strzelce Plant Breeding Company Ltd., belonging to the Plant Breeding and Acclimatization Institute in Radzików, and it included 39 oat genotypes. At the six-week seedling stage, the percentage of plants with root and leaf sheath necrosis symptoms was evaluated. In 2010 the percentage of seedlings with disease symptoms ranged from 6.5% to 25%, in 2011 it ranged from 17% to 34.5%, whereas in 2012 from 10% to 25%. In 2010 the disease index ranged from 1.4 to 5.7, in 2011 from 4.5 to 8.8, while in 2012 it was between 2.0 and 5.4. Mycological analysis showed that large numbers of Fusarium spp. colonies were obtained both from the roots and leaf sheaths. Isolates of these fungi accounted for 63.48% of the total fungi isolated from seedlings. Seedlings grown under the conditions of central Poland were damaged by the species F. culmorum, F. avenaceum, and F. solani. The investigation of the susceptibility of 15 oat genotypes to infection with two Fusarium graminearum strains – Tz 56 and Tk 235 – was carried out under growth chamber conditions at a temperature of 22–23oC and relative air humidity of 85%. The F. graminearum strain Tz 56 proved to be the most pathogenic to seedlings of the breeding lines STH 0.9403 and POB 1316/08, for which the disease index was 80.5 and 75.5, respectively. The lowest pathogenicity of the a.m. strain was recorded in the case of the genotype DC 1832/05, for which the disease index was 26.5. The F. graminearum strain Tk 235 proved to be the most pathogenic to the genotypes STH 0.9403 and STH 0.9423, for which the disease index was 70.5 and 70.0, respectively, whereas this strain was least pathogenic to the breeding line DC 2112/05, in the case of which the disease index was 25.5.
Badania przeprowadzono w latach 2010–2012 na polach Hodowli Roślin Strzelce Sp. z o. o., Grupa IHAR, objęto nimi 39 genotypów owsa. W fazie 6-tygodniowych siewek oceniano udział roślin z objawami nekrozy korzeni oraz pochew liściowych. Udział siewek z objawami chorobowymi wynosić w 2010 roku od 6,5% do 25%, w 2011 roku od 17% do 34,5%, zaś w 2012 roku od 10,0% do 25,0%. Wartości wskażnika chorobowego wahały się w 2010 roku od 1,4 do 5,7, w 2011 roku od 4,5 do 8,8, zaś w 2012 roku od 2.0 do 5,4. Analiza mykologiczna wykazała, że zarówno z korzeni jak i z pochew liściowych licznie uzyskiwano kolonie Fusarium spp. Izolaty tych grzybów stanowi- ły 63,48% ogółu grzybów wyosobnionych z siewek. Przyczyną uszkodzenia siewek owsa uprawianego w warunkach centralnej Polski były gatunki: F. culmorum, F. avenaceum i F. solani. Badania podatności siewek 15 genotypów owsa na porażenie przez dwa szczepy Fusarium graminearum - Tz 56 i Tk 235 przeprowadzono w warunkach fitotronowych, w temperaturze 22–23oC i wilgotności względnej powietrza 85%. Szczep F. graminearum Tz 56 okazał się najbardziej patogeniczny w stosunku do siewek rodów hodowlanych STH 0.9403 oraz POB 1316/08, dla których warto ści wskażnika chorobowego wynosiły odpowiednio 80,5 oraz 75,5. Najmniejszą szkodliwość w/w szczepu zanotowano w przypadku genotypu DC 1832/05, dla którego wartość wskaźnika chorobowego wynosi ła 26,5. Szczep F. graminearum Tk 235 okazał się najbardziej patogeniczny dla genotypów STH 0.9403 i STH 0.9423, dla których wartości wskażnika chorobowego wynosiły odpowiednio: 70,5 i 70,0, zaś w/w szczep był najmniej patogeniczny dla rodu hodowlanego DC 2112/05, w przypadku którego wartość wskaż- nika chorobowego wynosiła 25,5.

The genus Scopulariopsis is a common soil saprotroph and has been isolated from air, organic waste and also from plant, animal and human tissues. Scopulariopsis has mainly been associated in humans with superficial mycoses, but it has also been described as the cause of subcutaneous and invasive infections. The most common aetiological agent of infections in humans is Scopulariopsis brevicaulis. This species has been reported to be resistant in vitro to broad-spectrum antifungal agents available today. The aim of the study was to establish in vitro antifungal susceptibility of 35 S. brevicaulis strains against amphotericin B (AMB), flucytosine (FC), caspofungin (CAS), terbinafine (TER), ciclopirox (CIC), voriconazole (VOR), clotrimazole (CTR), miconazole (MCZ), econazole (ECO), ketoconazole (KET), itraconazole (ITR), and fluconazole (FLU). Antifungal susceptibility tests were evaluated by an agar diffusion method (Neo-Sensitabs, Rosco, Denmark). AMB, FC, CAS, ITR and FLU showed no antifungal activity against S. brevicaulis. TER, CIC, CTR, KET, VOR, ECO, and MCZ revealed inhibitory activity for S. brevicaulis, but it varied for each of the drugs. The best antifungal effect was observed for TER and CIC. All isolates had large inhibition zones for TER and CIC. CTR was also inhibitory for all tested S. brevicaulis isolates, but the diameters of inhibition zones were smaller than for TER and CIC. Nearly 89% isolates showed inhibition zones for KET and the mean diameter of the inhibition zone was comparable to CTR. The least antifungal activity exhibited VOR, ECO and MCZ. Because of the multiresistance of S. brevicaulis, infections due to this species may not respond to particular antifungal treatment and other therapeutic approaches should be considered e.g., combined therapy and/or surgery.

2-Furylometanol jest cieczą stosowaną do syntezy żywicy furanowej jako rozpuszczalnik, dodatek do polimerów i cementów oraz półprodukt do syntezy organicznej. Wielkość narażenia na ten związek nie została precyzyjnie określona. U ludzi w warunkach jednorazowego narażenia (8 h) związek o stężeniach powyżej 64 mg/m3 działa drażniąco na oczy. U gryzoni, w warunkach narażenia powtarzanego, wykazano, że związek o stężeniu 8 mg/m3 działa drażniąco na błony śluzowe górnych dróg oddechowych, a o większych stężeniach (100 i 200 mg/m3) powoduje zmiany czynnościowe i morfologiczne w mózgu i móżdżku. W zasadzie nie wykazano działania mutagennego związku. W dostępnym piśmiennictwie nie ma danych na temat działania rakotwórczego, embriotoksycznego, fetotoksycznego i teratogennego 2-furylometanolu. Ze względu na różnice wrażliwości ludzi i gryzoni na drażniące działanie 2-furylometanolu (gryzonie są bardziej wrażliwe), które wynikają z budowy anatomicznej górnych dróg oddechowych i modelu oddychania, za podstawę wartości największego dopuszczalnego stężenia (NDS) tego związku przyjęto jego działanie drażniące na oczy i depresyjne na OUN u ludzi. Przyjmując stężenie 64 mg/m3 2-furylometanolu za wartość NOAEL oraz współczynnik niepewności 2 dla różnic wrażliwości osobniczej, zaproponowano przyjęcie wartości NDS wynoszącej 30 mg/m3, natomiast wartości NDSCh równej 60 mg/m3. Związek powinien być również oznaczony literami „Sk”.
2-Furylmethanol (2-FM) is a colorless liquid. It is mainly used as an intermediate in the synthesis of furane resin and other organic compounds as well as industrial solvents. The acute toxicity of 2-FM in laboratory animals is moderate. The oral LD50 in rats is 177-275 mg/kg. The vapours of 2-FM are irritating to the eyes and respiratory tract in humans and animals. In humans this chemical also exerts a depressive effect on the central nervous system. No mutagenic effect has been found in the relevant toxicological studies. The data on carcinogenic, embriotoxic, fetotoxic and teratogenic effects of 2-FM are not available in toxicological literature. The proposed maximum exposure limit (MAC) – 30 mg/m3 and the MAC-STEL – 60 mg/m3 are based on the irritative effects of 2-FM observed in humans.

Based on Laplace's law and the mechanical characteristics of knitted vascular prostheses, mathematical models have been developed enabling one to determine the values of the relative circumferential elongation, circumferential forces and standard circumferential susceptibility of a prosthesis as a function of its diameter and internal pressure. The results obtained refer to the values of the parameters assessed for the initial phase of their exploitation, allow to preliminarily predict the values of these parameters.
Na podstawie prawa Laplace'a i charakterystyki mechanicznej dzianiny stosowanej do wytwarzania protez naczyń krwionośnych opracowano modele matematyczne umożliwiające wyznaczenie wartości obwodowego wydłużenia względnego, sił obwodowych i normatywnej podatności obwodowej w funkcji średnicy protezy i ciśnienia wewnętrznego. Wyniki uzyskane z tych analiz odnoszą się do wartości ocenianych parametrów dla początkowej fazy ich eksploatacji i pozwolą one na wstępne prognozowanie wartości tych parametrów.

The anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) of sedimentary rocks has been used for interpreting wide range of processes: early rock deformations, palaeotransport directions, as well as the evolution of mineral content. Various sedimentary factors which may determine magnetic susceptibility within lacustrine, river, floodplain and swamp deposits have been examined in the Oravica section of the Orava-Nowy Targ Basin. Multiple components of mineral content: illite, chlorite, smectite, kaolinite, quartz and unidentified high susceptibility phase make an AMS interpretation of this content ambiguous. However, this method may be useful for tracing early diagenetic geochemical/microbial processes where iron element is involved. Some sedimentary processes may be recognized from AMS when an assemblage of parameters is studied together: bulk susceptibility, the degree and the shape of anisotropy, principal directions, and the distribution of all these parameters within a set of specimens. Debris-flow processes, as well as lacustrine and floodplain sedimentation are especially well-defined in AMS results. Palaeotransport directions are ambiguous because studied rocks have undergone weak deformation what overprints this sedimentary feature. Most specimens represent an oblate shape of anisotropy and show a good correlation of minimum susceptibility axis and normal to bedding plane.

Several samples of dusts from steel and coke plants (collected mostly with electro filters) were subjected to the investigation of content of mineral phases in their particles. Additionally, sample of bog iron ore and metallurgical slurry was studied. Next, the magnetic susceptibility of all the samples was determined, and investigations of iron-containing phases were performed using transmission Mössbauer spectrometry. The values of mass-specific magnetic susceptibility varied in a wide range: from 59 to above 7000 × 10−8 m3kg−1. The low values are determined for bog iron ore, metallurgical slurry, and coke dusts. The extremely high was obtained for metallurgical dusts. The Mössbauer spectra and X-ray diffraction patterns point to the presence of the following phases containing iron: hematite and oxidized magnetite (in coke and metallurgical dusts as well as metallurgical slurry), traces of magnetite fi ne grains fraction (in metallurgical dusts), amorphous glassy silicates with paramagnetic Fe3+ and Fe2+ ions, traces of pyrrhotite (in coke dusts), α-Fe and nonstoichiometric wüstite (in metallurgical slurry), as well as ferrihydrite nanoparticles (in bog iron ore). For individual samples of metallurgical dusts, the relative contributions of Fe2+/3+ ions in octahedral B sites and Fe2+ ions in tetrahedral A sites in magnetite spinel structure differs considerably.

Background. Plumbing materials in water distribution networks and indoor installations are constantly evolving. The application of new, more economical solutions with plastic materials eliminates the corrosion problems, however, do not fully protect the consumer against secondary microbial contamination of water intended for human consumption caused by the presence of a biofilm on the inner surface of materials applied. National Institute of Public Health - National Institute of Hygiene conducts research aimed at a comprehensive assessment of this type of materials, resulting their further marketing authorization in Poland. Objectives. Evaluation and comparison of polymer and rubber materials intended to contact with water for the susceptibility to biofilm formation. Materials and Methods. Plastic materials (polyethylene, polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride) and rubber compounds (EPDM, NBR), from different manufacturers were evaluated. The study was carried out on 37 samples, which were divided into groups according to the material of which they were made. The testing was conducted according to the method based on conditions of dynamic flow of tap water. The level of bioluminescence in swabs taken from the surface of the tested materials was investigated with a luminometer. Results. Evaluation of plastic materials does not show major objections in terms of hygienic assessment. All materials met the evaluation criteria established for methodology used. In case of rubber compounds, a substantial part clearly exceeded the limit values, which resulted in their negative assessment and elimination of these materials from domestic market. Conclusions: High susceptibility to the formation of biofilm in the group of products made of rubber compounds has been demonstrated. Examined plastic materials, except for several cases, do not revealed susceptibility to biofilm formation, but application of plastics for distribution of water intended for human consumption does not fully protect water from secondary, microbiological contamination. Complete verification of plumbing materials including biofilm formation test before their introduction into the domestic market should be continued.
Wprowadzenie. Materiały wykorzystywane w sieciach wodociągowych oraz instalacjach wewnątrz budynków ulegają ciągłym zmianom. Wprowadzenie nowych bardziej ekonomicznych rozwiązań z zastosowaniem materiałów z tworzyw sztucznych eliminuje problemy związane z korozją, jednak nie zabezpiecza konsumenta przed wtórnym mikrobiologicznym zanieczyszczeniem wody przeznaczonej do spożycia powodowanym występowaniem biofilmu na wewnętrznej powierzchni rur i przewodów instalacyjnych. W Narodowym Instytucie Zdrowia Publicznego - Państwowym Zakładzie Higieny, prowadzone są badania mające na celu kompleksową ocenę tego typu materiałów, czego efektem jest wydawanie Atestów Higienicznych i dopuszczenie materiałów do obrotu na krajowym rynku. Cel. Celem badań było porównanie i ocena materiałów z tworzyw sztucznych i gumy przeznaczonych do kontaktu z wodą do spożycia w zakresie ich podatności na tworzenie biofilmu. Materiał i metody. Ocenie poddano materiały z różnych tworzyw sztucznych (polietylen, polipropylen, polichlorek winylu) oraz mieszanki gumowe pochodzące od różnych producentów. Badania wykonano dla 37 próbek, które zostały podzielone na grupy w zależności od rodzaju materiału z jakiego zostały wykonane. Badania prowadzone były zgodnie z metodyką własną, w dynamicznych warunkach przepływu wody, z wykorzystaniem urządzeń przepływowych (UPE). Za pomocą luminometru oznaczano poziom bioluminescencji w wymazach pobranych z powierzchni testowanych materiałów. Wyniki. Ocena zbadanych materiałów z tworzyw sztucznych nie budziła większych zastrzeżeń pod względem higienicznym. Wszystkie materiały spełniały kryteria oceny określone w stosowanej metodyce badawczej, przy czym w kilku przypadkach oznaczone wartości były bliskie dopuszczalnego limitu. W przypadku mieszanek gumowych, w znacznej części stwierdzono wyraźne przekroczenia dopuszczalnych wartości, co skutkowało negatywną ich oceną oraz eliminacją tych materiałów z obrotu na krajowym rynku i możliwością ich wykorzystywania w kontakcie z wodą do picia. Wnioski. Wykazano znaczną podatność zbadanych produktów wykonanych z mieszanek gumowych na tworzenie się biofilmu. Materiały tworzywowe jak polietylen, polichlorek winylu i polipropylen, w znacznej większości nie wykazywały podatności na tworzenie się biofilmu, jednak ich zastosowanie do dystrybucji wody przeznaczonej do spożycia przez człowieka nie zabezpiecza jej w pełni przed wtórnym, mikrobiologicznym zanieczyszczeniem. W celu pełnej weryfikacji materiałów, przed ich wprowadzeniem na krajowy rynek, niezbędna jest dalsza ich ocena, z uwzględnieniem ich podatności na tworzenie się biofilmu.

Eighteen spring wheat cultivars, recommended for commercial production in northern Poland, were assessed for Fusarium head blight (FHB) in natural non-epidemic conditions, from 2011 to 2013. Assessment was based on FHB incidence (proportion of heads with symptoms), disease severity (DS; proportion of bleached spikelets per head), proportion of Fusarium damaged kernels (FDK), and spectrum of Fusarium spp. colonising the kernels. Fusarium head blight incidence and DS often differed significantly among cultivars and years. There was a strong positive correlation between FHB incidence and DS. Fusarium head blight incidence and DS were not correlated with the June–July temperatures, and were only occasionally correlated with the total June–July rainfall. There was a weak positive correlation between FHB incidence and proportion of FDK. There was a strong positive correlation between DS and proportion of FDK. The cultivar affected colonisation of kernels by Fusarium spp. Fusarium poae was the FHB pathogen isolated most often. Fusarium poae colonised 6.0% of the kernels, on average, but up to 12.0% on individual cultivars. Other Fusarium species were less frequent: F. avenaceum in 5.6% of kernels, F. culmorum in 5.3%, F. tricinctum in 2.8%, F. graminearum in 1.5%, and F. sporotrichioides in 1.2%. Fusarium equiseti occurred sporadically. The importance of F. poae in the FHB complex is emphasised. All cultivars expressed ‘moderate FHB resistance’ if evaluated according to FHB incidence. Cultivars Arabella, Izera, Kandela, Monsun, Ostka Smolicka, and Struna expressed ‘moderate susceptibility’, and Bombona, Hewilla, Katoda, KWS Torridon, Łagwa, Nawra, Parabola, Radocha, SMH 87, Trappe, Tybalt, and Waluta expressed ‘susceptibility’ if evaluated by the proportion of FDK. Cultivars differed within the ‘moderately resistant’, ‘moderately susceptible’, and ‘susceptible’ categories. Cultivars Arabella, Izera, Kandela, Monsun, Ostka Smolicka, and Struna were the most promising and their resistance traits may be useful in FHB management.

In this paper, the results of investigations are presented, into the microstructure and magnetic properties of the following amorphous alloys in the as-quenched state: Fe82Zr7Nb2Cu1B8 and Fe86Zr4Y3Nb1Cu1B5. The studied material was produced in the form of thin ribbons of 3 mm width and 20 μm thickness. The structure and microstructure of the samples have been investigated by means of Mössbauer spectrometry and X-ray diffractometry. In addition, the magnetic properties of these materials have been determined, i.e. the low-field magnetic susceptibility, and the magnetisation as a function of temperature and magnetising field. On the basis of the performed investigations, it has been found that a minor change in the quantities of elements favouring amorphisation, such as: Zr and Y, has an influence on the value of the Curie temperature and the magnetic properties of the resulting alloys. It should be noticed that the changes, introduced in the chemical composition of the alloys, don’t change the combined volume of these elements, i.e. Zr7 and Zr4Y3.
W pracy przedstawiono wyniki badań struktury i mikrostruktury oraz właściwości magnetycznych stopów amorficznych Fe82Zr7Nb2Cu1B8, Fe86Zr4Y3Nb1Cu1B5 w stanie po zestaleniu w postaci cienkich taśm o szerokości 3 mm i grubości 20 μm. Strukturę oraz mikrostrukturę próbek badano wykorzystując spektrometrię mössbauerowską i spektroskopię rentgenowską. Dokonano również pomiarów właściwości magnetycznych, takich jak: niskopolowa podatność magnetyczna, magnetyzacja w funkcji temperatury i funkcji pola magnesującego. Na podstawie przeprowadzonych badań stwierdzono, że niewielka zmiana amorfizatorów takich jak: cyrkon i itr znacząco wpływa na wartość temperatury Curie, a także wpływa na właściwości magnetyczne tych stopów. Należy zwrócić szczególną uwagę na fakt, że wprowadzone zmiany składowe nie zmieniają ich ilości tzn. Zr7 i Zr4Y3.

Celem badań była ocena podatności odmian kukurydzy znajdujących się na rynku polskim i mieszańców eksperymentalnych kukurydzy na zgorzel podstawy łodygi z infekcji naturalnej oraz określenie czynników wpływających na zmiany w nasileniu choroby w latach. Ocenę przepro¬wadzono w latach 1985–1990 oraz 2002–2006 w Radzikowie. W każdym roku oceniano od 36 do 150 odmian i mieszańców. Do oceny porażenia łodyg zastosowano metodę podłużnego krojenia łodyg według Krügera i skalę 1–9 opracowaną w zespole FAO. Stwierdzono, że zarówno mieszańce jak i odmiany różnią się podatnością na zgorzel podstawy łodygi. Odmiany wcześnie dojrzewające są bardziej podatne na chorobę w porównaniu do późno dojrzewających. Na podatność odmian duży wpływ mają warunki środowiska. Nasilenie choroby zmienia się w latach i wiąże się ściśle z warunkami pogodowymi, z terminem kwitnienia kukurydzy oraz terminem pojawiania się pierw¬szych objawów choroby. Wczesny termin kwitnienia kukurydzy predysponuje rośliny do wczesnej infekcji łodyg, czego konsekwencją jest silne wyleganie roślin w okresie zbioru kolb. Ocena podatności odmian wykonana przy dużym nasileniu choroby jest najbardziej miarodajna. Odmiany takie jak Cyrkon, Grom, Król, Iman, Blask, Glejt i Boruta można zaliczyć do mało podatnych, natomiast Wilga, Duet, Wiarus, Bułat i Fido do bardzo podatnych.
The aim of the study was the evaluation of susceptibility of maize hybrid cultivars registered in Poland and experimental hybrids to natural infection with stalk rot. Moreover, factors inducing changes in severity of the disease were determined. The evaluation was performed in the years 1985–1990 and 2002–2006 at Radzików. In each year 36–150 genotypes were examined. The Krüger’s method for longitudinal cutting of the stalks and the scale 1–9 elaborated by the FAO group were applied to measure infection rates. The hybrid cultivars differed in the susceptibility to stalk rot. The early cultivars, compared to the late ones, appeared to be more susceptible to infection. The level of plant susceptibility to disease was greatly influenced by environmental conditions. The infection rates varied in the years of the study, and depended on: weather conditions, date of maize flowering and date of the appearance of first disease symptoms. Early flowering predisposed the plants to early stalk infection, which resulted in heavy lodging of plants at the time of cobs harvesting. The evaluation of plant susceptibility performed under high pressure of the disease gives the most reliable screening. The cultivars Cyrkon, Grom, Król, Iman, Blask, Glejt and Boruta were found to be moderately susceptible to stalk rot, whereas the cultivars Wilga, Duet, Wiarus, Bułat and Fido are highly susceptible.

A construction of a realistic statistical model of lung cancer risk and progression is proposed. The essential elements of the model are genetic and behavioral determinants of susceptibility, progression of the disease from precursor lesions through early (localized) tumors to disseminated disease, detection by various modalities, and medical intervention. Using model estimates as a foundation, mortality reduction caused by early-detection and intervention programs can be predicted under different scenarios. Genetic indicators of susceptibility to lung cancer should be used to define the highest-risk subgroups of the high-risk behavior population (smokers). The calibration and validation of the model requires applying our techniques to a variety of data sets available, including public registry data of the SEER type, data from the NCI lung cancer chest X-ray screening studies, and the recent ELCAP CT-scan screening study.

W artykule przedstawiono nową metodę oceny podatności osuwisk na okresowe zmiany użytkowania terenu. W badaniach wykorzystano zintegrowane obserwacje satelitarne oraz technikę GIS. Na podstawie informacji o zmianach powierzchni Ziemi, uzyskanych z satelitów LANDSAT i INSAR, opracowano model geotechniczny, który, po pierwsze, na podstawie danych geologicznych i geomorfologicznych lub też bezpośrednich badań terenowych, określa podatność terenu na powstawanie osuwisk, po drugie, wskazuje wpływ zmian na granice równowagi czynników bezpieczeństwa (FS), a po trzecie, przedstawia potencjalny efekt zmian na deformację zboczy przy współczynniku FS = 1.0. Opisano też wykorzystanie tego modelu w rejonie Caramanico (Włochy) z uwzględnieniem obserwacji satelitarnych z lat 1987-2000. Przedyskutowano trudności pojawiające się w trakcie obróbki danych satelitarnych i podczas ich interpretacji. Okazało się, że w opracowaniu dotyczącym rejonu Caramanico można wykorzystać jedynie dane dotyczące zmian powierzchniowych, związanych z zamianą terenów pokrytych roślinnością na tereny zabudowane. Niemniej, wstępne wyniki wspomnianych badań sugerują, że mogą istnieć przestrzenne związki istniejących uprzednio zmian powierzchni z deformacjami obszarów zurbanizowanych, odnotowanymi przez pomiary GPS oraz przez satelitarne pomiary radarowe PS.

Praca przedstawia wyniki wstępnych badań wpływu grubości sklerenchymy strąków fasoli na ich podatność na pękanie. U odmiany Igołomska wystąpiła ujemna korelacja między grubością sklerenchymy, a jednostkową siłą rozrywającą, co oznacza, że im grubsza jest ta warstwa w strąku to tym łatwiej następuje jego otwarcie. Natomiast u dwóch pozostałych badanych odmian wystąpiła zależność przeciwna, czyli strąki o grubszej warstwie sklerenchymy wymagały do ich otwarcia większej siły, co oznaczać może, że warstwa ta dodatkowo je wzmacnia. Dokładne poznanie zależności jaka istnieje pomiędzy mierzonymi wielkościami wymaga dodatkowych badań struktury anatomicznej strąka fasoli a szczególnie jego szwu, oraz rozszerzenia ich na większą liczbę odmian.
The paper shows the results of the preliminary examination of the influence of sclerenhyma thickness in bean pods on its susceptibility to cracking.In Igoomska variety, there was found an negative correlation between sclerenhyma layer in a bean pod is, the more easily its` bursting occurs. Concurrently, in two other examined varieties it was found that contrary to the above case, the thicker the scleranhyma layer was strengthening the pods. An exact exploration of the correlation`sbetween the measured features requires more detailed examination of the anatomical structure of the bean pods, especially its raph and extansion of the experiment on wider range if bean varieties.

In 2012–2013, a study was conducted, consisting in a bonitation analysis of turf on the City Stadium which is located in the north-west part of Wroclaw and was a sport arena of the European Championships Euro 2012. The experiment was made with the complete randomisation method for 2 factors, on 5 dates in the growing season. On the turf of the pitch 12 points were selected, and at each of them an evaluation of utility features was performed, in 4 replications, on surface area of 1 m2 . Based on the observation of the condition of the turf, during subsequent analyses it was found how the selection of the mixture of grasses, intensity of use and pratotechnic treatments affect the bonitation quality of sport turfgrass. The results are shown in relation to the whole object, separating each of the features under analysis.

Staphylococcus caprae was originally isolated from goat milk. This uncommon coagulase-negative staphylococcus, usually associated with animals, has only infrequently been detected in human clinical specimens. Its association with acute otitis media has not been demonstrated so far. The study reports the first isolation of S. caprae from the middle ear fluid of a 12-month-old infant with recurrent, bilateral acute otitis media. Biochemical traits and susceptibility pattern of the isolated strain are also presented.
