Lorette Nobécourt is a living French writer (she was born in 1968). In her work takes place a quest of the "Word", the holy name she gives to literature. A great feeling of spirituality comes out from her texts. From 1999 to 2012 she wrote three texts about three different pictural works : La Raie by Chardin (french painter), L’Ordre du monde by Sujata Bajaj (indian artist) and L’Usage des jours by Guillaume Bardet (french designer). Trough her texts appears her literary and spiritual evolution. Literature proved to be a spiritual ritual, like a memento mori, but also an real prayer, an hymn in praise of the « living life ».

The article explains the concept of a spiritual experience in the context of a broadly understood experience. The author highlights the anthropological aspect of symbols and links them with human spiritual consciousness. The article concentrates on symbols occurring in the Bible and their use in symbolic acts performed by the prophets and by Jesus Christ. It shows the spiritual role of symbols in the Gospel of John and defines the role of symbols in spiritual experience realized in the context of prayer, liturgy and mysticism.
Artykuł objaśnia pojęcie doświadczenia duchowego w szeroko rozumianym doświadczeniu. Naświetla symbol w aspekcie antropologicznym i w powiązaniu ze świadomością duchową. Ukazuje symbole w Biblii i ich zastosowanie w czynnościach symbolicznych pełnionych przez proroków i przez Jezusa Chrystusa. Ukazuje rolę duchową symboli w Ewangelii według św. Jana. Następnie określa rolę symboli w realizacji doświadczenia duchowego w kontekście modlitwy, liturgii i mistyki.

Pursuant to the teachings of Pope Francis, mercy – as a theological term – constitutes a “generating category” which in other words ought to be understood as a specific form or yet an approach manifested in the perception of the general Christian Experience as well as recognition of its visibility and witnessing it. The article indicates that mercy is most of all a spiritual experience that allows to witness the mystery of the presence of the Holy Spirit. Thus, it cannot be limited to one-dimensional human experiences as it reaches far beyond any one-dimensional definitions. Pope Francis calls upon theologians to ascend to the level of such direct experience of the Spirit that ought to contribute to the witnessing of God’s mercy for it is the sole generator of God’s light and knowledge. Therefore, it allows to open and fulfill in the Church the ministry of pondering and discovering new ways of God. Sometimes it constitutes consent to one’s personal helplessness and silence that is filled with impatience and unrest that becomes the humble proof of following the path of challenges that are set upon Christians in this day and age, o`en leading to darkness of faith, full of hope and love.

Miłość Boga doświadczona przez proroka Ozeasza (VIII w. przed Chr.) jest w swym opisie, zawartym w Oz 2,4-25, ściśle powiązana z kontekstem historycznym i egzystencjalnym: bałwochwalstwem Izraela oraz zdradą ze strony żony Proroka. W obliczu zaistniałej sytuacji miłość ta ujawnia jej oblubieńczy charakter. Składa się na nią „zazdrość” – żarliwa troska o wyłączność relacji wraz z jednoczesną nieakceptacją cudzołóstwa, co wiąże się z wymiarem sprawiedliwości. Dopełnia go jednak drugi: miłosierdzie – gotowe przebaczyć i zrobić wszystko, by ocalić niewierną małżonkę oraz przywrócić utraconą jedność. Zarysowana przez Ozeasza małżeńska miłość Boga znajdzie swe ucieleśnienie w osobie Jezusa Chrystusa – Oblubieńcu Kościoła.
The Love of God experienced by the prophet Hosea (8th century BC) is closely linked in its description, which is contained in Hos 2,4-25, with the historical and existential context: Israel’s idolatry and the marital infidelity of the Prophet’s wife. In the face of this situation this Love reveals its spousal character. It is characterized by ‘jealousy’ – fervent concern for the relationship’s exclusiveness with simultaneous intolerance of adultery, the latter being connected with the dimension of justice. This aspect, however, is complemented by another: mercy – the readiness to forgive and do anything to save the unfaithful wife and to restore the lost unity. The marital Love of God outlined by Hosea will find its embodiment in the Person of Jesus Christ – the Spouse of the Church.

Wesley Wildman's and Kate Stockly's book Spirit Tech - The Brave New World of Consciousness Hacking and Enlightenment Engineering is an interesting compilation and analysis of current research on technologies of spiritual experience. The book offers the latest in neuroscience, very bold predictions about the development of spirituality technology, and very far-reaching conclusions about the development of religion. The authors take an interdisciplinary approach to their work, touching on neuroscience, medical engineering, psychology, religion, and ethics. They do not shy away from the big philosophical, psychological, and ethical questions, and they specifically focus on questions of authenticity, meaning, safety, and social responsibility arising from the marriage of technology and spirituality. Modern neuroscience along with engineering has already created new areas of science-faith and technology-faith relationships. Technological substitutes for spirituality are also increasingly becoming a new challenge to traditional spirituality and to religion.

The article discusses the characteristics of a philosophical and cultural dispute with metaphysics and about metaphysics itself. The criticism of metaphysics and its revival in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries is discussed here. In the first part, the most important philosophical directions dealing with issues of metaphysics are presented: metaphysical idealism, anti-metaphysical positivism and neo-positivism, analytic philosophy versus metaphysics on the example of L. Wittgenstein, the revision of the metaphysical tradition and new investigations in metaphysics. The second part of the article concerns the picture of natural metaphysics including the mathematical-empirical method of researching the world. In the conclusion of the article, a thesis is put forward on searching for new metaphysics which will include a wider sphere of rationality and existential and spiritual experience.

The first aim of this article is an attempt to explain some terminological questions in the field of texts interpretation, here especially of poetry, which bears the character of a theological source (locus theologicus). This aim has been achieved by the idea of the right application of a text, which means respect for its original meaning and at the same time the transition of this meaning beyond the line of direct analysis and interpretation to an outer circle of religious and spiritual issues. This idea in its two forms of the yes- or the yes but-application shows how reading poetry can stimulate life decisions and shape somebody’s spiritual attitude.The second aim of my paper is to expose the right application through the motive of going beyond which has emerged from the poetical work by Robert Frost – one of the most outstanding and prominent artists of the twentieth century.
Pierwszym celem niniejszego artykułu jest próba uporządkowania pewnych terminologicznych kwestii w zakresie interpretacji tekstów, szczególnie poezji posiadającej status miejsca teologicznego (locus theologicus). Ów cel został zrealizowany przez propozycję wprowadzenia pojęcia właściwej aplikacji tekstu (the right application), która oznacza pełne respektowanie oryginalnego znaczenia tekstu z jednoczesnym przeniesieniem go poza granicę ścisłej analizy i interpretacji do kręgu problematyki życia duchowego i religijnego. W swoich dwóch formach, aplikacji pozytywnej (yes-application) oraz warunkowej (yes but-application), właściwa aplikacja ukazuje, jak czytanie poezji może stymulować życiowe decyzje i określać kształt duchowości.Drugim celem artykułu jest praktyczne przedstawienie tej idei poprzez opracowanie motywu przekraczania granic, zaczerpniętego z poezji Roberta Frosta, jednego z najwybitniejszych i wspaniałych artystów dwudziestego stulecia.

The aim of this paper is the presentation of W. James’ concept of religious experience. The main problem is whether a religious experience has the same certainty as a sensual one and what it refers to, i.e. what its object is: a fictitious realm of being or a kind of other reality – unknown for an ordinary experience. Another problem consists in whether the qualities of religious experience (as James says) such as unexaminability and incommunicatibility can be a philosophical issue or rather the object of psychiatry.

Pierre Hadot’s legacy is a vision of ancient philosophy not only as a system of abstract concepts and logical procedures but as a practical philosophical methodology. A key element of this interpretation is consideration of ancient philosophical practice as a series of spiritual exercises to improve one’s own life. The present paper aims to show, more humbly, that by highlighting the aesthetic dimension of the practice of gardening we can consider it part of the set of philosophically charged spiritual exercises. Gardening supports the improvement of one’s own experience of the world through the meeting of different temporal experiences. The appropriation of such different temporal nuances in stark contrast to the accelerated pace of modern life, or periods of tiresome repetition, makes it possible to question one’s own rhythm in the world. In other words, I defend the thesis that horticulture can be considered therapeutic also from a philosophical perspective.

Opis:
Статья анализирует феномен старчества в духовной традиции Православия, трактуя его как антропологический механизм трансляции духовного опыта. Описаны этапы исторической эволюции старчества, ведущей к расширению его служения за пределы монашеской, а затем и церковной среды. Главное внимание уделяется последнему этапу эволюции – русскому старчеству 19-20вв., внутренняя суть которого определяется как сверхнормативная любовь Христова, имеющая свой совершенный образ в Искуплении и Крестной Жертве Христа. Показано, что в русском старчестве создается особая этическая формация, принципами которой являются кенозис, смирение и абсолютное принятие Другого.
The article presents the analysis of the phenomenon of the eldership in the Orthodox spiritual tradition interpreting this phenomenon as an anthropological mechanism of the translation of spiritual experience. Historical evolution of the eldership is reconstructed which leads to its expansion beyond the limits of the monastic and then also ecclesiastic medium. The main attention is paid to the last stage of the evolution, the Russian eldership of the 19-20th cc. The essence of this phenomenon is qualified as the supra-normative love of Christ, the perfect manifestation of which is the Redemption and the Sacrifice on the Cross of Christ. It is shown that the Russian eldership creates an original ethical formation, main principles of which are kenosis, humility and the absolute acceptance of the Other.
Artykuł analizuje fenomen instytucji starców w duchowej tradycji Prawosławia, traktując go jako antropolgiczny mechanizm translacji duchowego doświadczenia. Opisano etapy historycznej ewolucji instytucji starców, prowadzącej do rozprzestrzenienia się ich służby poza obręb środowiska mniszego, a co za tym idzie – cerkiewnego. Najwięcej uwagi poświęcono ostatniemu etapowi ewolucji – rosyjskiej instytucji starców na przełomie XIX i XX wieku. Istotą tego fenomenu jest ponadnormatywna miłość Chrystusowa, której najdoskonalszym wyrazem jest Odkupienie i Ofiara Chrystusa na Krzyżu. Ukazano, iż rosyjska instytucja starców wytworzyła specyficzny kodeks etyczny, którego głównymi założeniami są kenoza, pokora i absolutna akceptacja Innego.

The aim of this article is to present the mutual relationships between the liturgy and Christian spirituality and mysticism based on the paradigm that the liturgy is the source and summit of the Christian spiritual life. Starting from the Council’s and Catechism’s definition of liturgy and showing against this background its close relationship with Christian spirituality and mysticism, the author concludes that it is in liturgical spirituality that the organic synthesis of the triad liturgy-spirituality-mysticism is most intensely visible. Liturgy is the source of faith, and it is an event in which God comes, speaks and acts. Christian spirituality and mysticism becomes the fruit of faith rooted in the soil of grace given in the liturgy. The development of the spiritual life is implanted in Christ in the liturgy, implanted in the Eucharist, which is the greatest gift and special good of the whole Church. After spirituality, mysticism appears as its consequence, which by its very nature demands liturgy, since it is nourished by the experienced and contemplated mystery. Liturgy, on the other hand, gains spiritual deepening through mysticism, because mysticism understood as the experience of the mystery proclaimed, celebrated, assimilated and lived leads to a gradual mystical union of the person of the faithful with the venerable person of Jesus Christ and makes it easier for the spirit of prayer rooted in the dynamic mystery of the Present Lord to be incarnated in daily life.

This article presents a diversity of major psychospiritual concepts in the works of Gerald Gordon May (1940–2005), half-brother on the renowned existential psychologist Rollo May. Unlike his brother, Gerald May has not penetrated the thought-provoking mainstream psychology of religion and spiritual theology. In the present text, we attempt to indicate some possible reasons for this, while also presenting him as a unique and insightful interdisciplinary author, exceptionally linking psychology and spiritual theology whose ideas were probably too advanced to be well accepted in his time. In order to argue in favor of this thesis separately from his diagnosis of the misuse of spirituality in contemporary society, the cornerstones of May’s contemplative psychology will be presented under headings such as unitive experiences, spiritual longing, and, their fruit, spiritual surrender.
Artykuł przedstawia główne koncepcje na styku psychologii i teologii duchowości w pracach Geralda Gordona Maya (1940–2005), przyrodniego brata bardziej znanego psychologa egzystencjalnego Rollo Maya. Ponieważ idee Geralda Maya nie przeniknęły do głównego nurtu psychologii religii oraz teologii duchowości, w niniejszym tekście autor wskazuje kilka możliwych przyczyn takiego stanu rzeczy. Prezentuje jednocześnie istotne elementy spuścizny Maya, ukazując go jako oryginalnego badacza pracującego na granicy psychologii i teologii duchowości o bardzo wnikliwym spojrzeniu na człowieka, którego idee były prawdopodobnie zbyt zaawansowane na swój czas. Aby argumentować na rzecz tej tezy, rozpoczynając od diagnozy instrumentalizacji duchowości we współczesnym społeczeństwie, zostały przedstawione zręby psychologii i teologii kontemplacyjnej Maya, czyli unikalne ujęcie doświadczenia mistycznego, opis duchowych pragnień człowieka oraz ich potencjalny owoc, którym jest całkowite poddanie się Bogu.

The author of this article, based on the accounts of the blessed Dorothy of Montau [Dorothea von Montau] (1347–1394), a medieval mystic, related by a theologian and confessor John of Kwidzyn [Joannes Marienwerder] (1343–1417), in a little work entitled Septililium, firstly, analyzes the degrees of spiritual life in order to present the degrees of supernatural love against such background, which were part of the experience of the recluse from the cathedral church in Kwidzyn. Spiritual life as a relationship of love with God encompasses an entire life. The pluralism of aspects is very rich. Traditionally understood religious life goes through the process of cleansings of the senses, then, the acceptance of the virtues of faith, hope and love, in order to enter a path of contemplative prayer and mystical communion. Love is the essence of spiritual life. The blessed Dorothy of Montau enjoyed a gift of seven graces: the gift of love, the gift of the Holy Spirit, the love of the Eucharist, contemplation, perfectness of life and the gift of penitence. God is worthy of perfect love. The Master of Kwidzyn mentions more degrees and characteristics of that love recognized in the theological reflection and mystical acts of the blessed Dorothy of Montau. The love of God should be: “wide” so in the love of God it is loving all men, then, “ordered”, as well as “limitless.” Perfect love as spiritual disposition is “continuous”, “deeply rooted”, “brave”, “constant”, then, “heated”, “on fire and wanting”, “ascending high”, i.e., exceeding the love of man and “overwhelming” as the one leading to God by the way of Commandments, the wandering from “virtue into virtue” and “the path of advice” of the Holy Spirit. The perfect love according to God’s inspiration is the highest elevation of the human spirit strengthened by God that is why it has the features of “hurt”, it is “unsettling”, “impatient”, and even surprisingly “crazy”, “sweet”, “greedy”, always “insatiable”, and since it is limited by human existence, it is thus “longing”, “intoxicating”, “enriching”, “cheering up”. Spiritual love must radiate. Joannes Marienwerder employs the word “gushing”, it is ample so it is “overflowing” every man and it is, of course, “wise”, as well as “invincible”, is not subject to “fatigue”, it is “impossible to lose”, “immortal”, “great and heart-breaking”. Finally, in the treatise entitled On Love by the blessed Dorothy of Montau as many as thirty six degrees of love are listed and briefly characterized.

Opis:
W swoim artykule szkicuję koncepcję doświadczenia metafizycznego jako doświadczenia Arche - podstawy bycia i egzystencji podmiotu. Argumentuję, że Arche jest nietrwała i płynna, lecz ukryta pod naszym codziennym doświadczeniem świata jako składającego się bytów o trwale ustalonych tożsamościach. Szkicuję także drogę prowadzącą od doświadczenia codziennego do doświadczenia ukrytej Arche.
In my paper I sketch a conception of metaphysical experience as the experience of Arche – a ground of being and existence. I argue that Arche is unstable and fluid, but hidden beneath our everyday, commonsense experiences of the world consisting of beings with firmly established identities. I also sketch the way leading from that everyday experience of the world towards the experience of the hidden Arche.

Artykuł przedstawia współczesną refleksję nad wyodrębnioną z nauk teologicznych w XX wieku – teologią duchowości. Wyjaśnia jej empiryczny charakter, który polega na badaniu doświadczenia duchowego konkretnych ludzi – czy to bezpośrednio (przez obserwację), czy też pośrednio (poprzez teksty). Analizując wybraną współczesną literaturę, artykuł ukazuje różne koncepcje możliwości teologicznego poznania doświadczenia. Przybliża metody badawcze stosowane aktualnie przez teologów duchowości (obok metod tradycyjnych: dedukcyjnej, opisowej, fenomenologicznej). Artykuł ukazuje proponowane nowe metody, ocenia je i grupuje w sposób następujący: a) metody poznawania poprzez osobiste doświadczenie; b) metody obserwacji; c) metody interpretacji tekstów – hermeneutyczne; d) metody stanowiące zasadę scalającą. Poprowadzona w ten sposób analiza współczesnej refleksji dotyczącej empirycznego charakteru duchowości, prowadzi no następujących wniosków: a) dostrzega się wiele prób poszukiwana nowych, bardziej szczegółowych metod poznawania doświadczenia duchowego ludzi; b) teologia duchowości inspiruje się w tym wieloma naukami humanistycznymi; c) wielość metod podkreśla wielowymiarowość ludzkiego doświadczenia, misterium ludzkiej osoby; d) przy skupieniu się tylko na jednej metodzie szczegółowej, istnieje niebezpieczeństwo redukcjonizmu; e) potrzebna jest jakaś metoda scalająca wszystkie inne metody – wydaje się, że może być nią metoda personalistyczna. System personalistyczny przyjmuje, że kluczem hermeneutycznym do rozumienia wszelkiego doświadczenia jest misterium osoby.
The article shows a contemporary reflection on spiritual theology. The field of spiritual theology became abstracted from the theological studies in the XXth century. The article explains its empirical nature, which consists in examining the spiritual experience of specific people – either directly through observation or indirectly through written texts. While analysing the chosen contemporary literature, the article presents different conceptions of possible theological examination of an experience. It also explains scientific methods which are applied by spiritual theologians (besides the traditional methods: deductive, descriptive, phenomenological). The article shows suggested new methods, evaluates them, and groups them in the following way: a) methods of learning through personal experience; b) methods of observation; c) methods of text exegesis – hermeneutic; d) methods representing merging principle. Such an analysis of a contemporary reflection on spiritual theology leads to the following conclusions: a) one can notice many attempts of searching for new, more thorough methods of examining the spiritual experience of people; b) spiritual theology is inspired in this point by many human sciences; c) the multitude of methods stress multidimensionality of human experience, a mystery of a person; d) while focusing on only one particular method, one is in danger of reductionism; e) there is a need for a method that would merge all the others – it seems that a personalistic method could serve this purpose. The personalistic system assumes that the hermeneutical key for understanding any experience is a mystery of a person.
