Opis:
In its analysis of human freedom, Józef Tischner’s philosophy poses fundamental questions about the essence of freedom, but also about the sense of preservation of freedom in one’s life. Freedom appears as a primary phenomenon, something that is part and parcel of human nature. Freedom as a structural element of human existence manifests itself perhaps most clearly in the sphere of human relations, which, immersed as they are in the eternal drama of good and evil, are played out in the space between salvation and damnation. The binary character of values, best seen in our use of freedom, keeps us for ever mindful of that unavoidable drama a man has to face, owing to his freedom, need not be helpless.Using such categories as election, space and health of the soul in his Rekolekcje Paryskie, Tischner approaches the definition of freedom through a succession of essential modifications which articulate some fundamental points concerning relations between people and man’s relations with God from an anthropological, axiological, ethical, social and theological perspective. Tischner proposes no definitive interpretation of freedom but, viewing the controversy over freedom as one of the most difficult problems in the philosophy of man, he tries to show what man’s inner freedom consists in and what achievements it makes man capable of.

Opis:
This article aims to show the rationale behind Joseph Ratzinger’s defence of the concept of the soul in his theological reflection. Since Ratzinger did not produce a separate text justifying the need to maintain the concept of the soul yet justified it when discussing other issues, primarily those related to the Christian profession of faith, a distinction was made between biblical and philosophical-theological arguments to analyse his thought. The analysis indicated that J. Ratzinger saw two fundamental paths in the biblical tradition leading to the formation of the concept of the soul. The first is that which discovers God as the Life-Giver more powerful than death. The second involves the maturing of the profession of faith in the resurrection and the fact of Christ’s resurrection. The concept of the soul, to be developed later, will be based on these two fundamental truths attested to by the Bible and will be the drawing of anthropological conclusions originating in the most important truths of the faith, such as the resurrection of the body or belief in the Last Judgement. Ratzinger also examines other statements of the Church’s Magisterium or those handed down by philosophical and theological tradition from this standpoint. Hence, for him, the concept of the soul does not so much belong to particular anthropology as it derives from a profession of faith that calls for a clear and simple message that is not confined to the expert considerations of theologians.

This paper is a part of a project devoted to Brentano’s Aristotelian writings. I concentrate on his habilitation about Aristotle’s psychology, and especially on how he understood Aristotle’s division of mental life into three levels as well as the functions typical for these levels. I analyze two notions that Brentano introduces in his account: Zwischenglieder, meaning intermediary “levels” within the soul enabling smooth passages between the vegetative soul and sensory soul and between the latter and intellectual soul; and Gottverwandtschaft, i.e. human kinship with God, which is possible thanks to the noblest part of the soul. I also introduce two metaphors of the soul: cake-metaphor and fabric-metaphor.

Opis:
The concept of ‘soul’ has for ages been a widespread and central category in the Russian national tradition, one through which the Russians seek to express their way of feeling and of comprehending their own community, territory, sense of existence, place and mission in the world. Thus, Russia is often treated as the ‘soul of the world,’ whereas her central power – actual (real) or potential (expected) – as the ‘soul of Russia.’ One of the consequences of the transformation over the last few centuries, symbolised by the name of Peter I, has been the emergence and rise of the Russian intelligentsia, perceived there, and perceiving itself, as at once an intellectual, cultural, ethical, social, political, ideological, historiosophical, and even quasi-sacral formation. In many ideas of the representatives of the Russian educated class the motif of ‘Russia’s soul,’ capable of reviving, revitalising and of transforming the existing reality, is associated namely with the intelligentsia. It is possible to find in them – even in those programmatically antisystemic and radically occidental – a whole array of features, structures and content typical of the Russian mental-cultural system, together with ways of perceiving, conceptualizing and problematizing the world – such that is, paradoxically, shared with the ideologies and supporters of the existing social order.

According to ancient Japanese beliefs invisible ghosts could freely travel between the worlds of supernatural and human. However, the travel was not limited to the souls of dead. It was believed that a soul could leave the body of a living person, do mischief and return. Such occurrence was called ikiryō. This paper analyses examples of such phenomenon depicted in two literary sources: Lady Rokujō from Murasaki Shikibu’s (978? 1016?) Genji monogatari (1008) and an unnamed noblewoman from Konjaku monogatarishū (1120).In both instances emotions play great role in creating ikiryō. Women’s souls separate from the body and serve punishment for sufferings caused by unfaithful men. However, there is a distinct difference in the matter of one’s awareness in becoming ikiryō. Lady Rokujō is unaware of her soul’s travels and experiences them as traumatic episodes of psychosis. On the other hand the unnamed noblewoman willingly turns her soul into ikiryō to deliver vengeance on her ex-lover and regains peace afterwards.Ikiryō is a manifestation of one’s true emotions. It shows not only the complexity of Japanese concept of a soul but also touches on the issue of women social status during Heian period.

Soon after Charles Darwin proposed his theory of the origin of species (1859), Catholic theologians set out to harmonize the evolutionary account with the traditional Christian doctrine of creation. While there have been several attempts at achieving this, all of them encountered philosophical or theological problems. After Humani Generis (1950), the debate among Catholic scholars shifted to questions related to polygenism and the propagation of original sin. In this paper, we show that these new theories adopted philosophically or theologically problematic concepts of hominization. We also argue that there is ample paleontological evidence from anatomy and tool-making to support the claim that the so-called fossil hominids should be categorized as either apes or human beings (Homo sapiens). This postulate invites a new look at human origins, one that remains compatible with modern science as well as traditional theology and metaphysics.

Opis:
Written probably between 1021-1024 the treatise on soul, known as Liber de Anima or Liber Sextus de Naturalibus, is one of the most popular works of Avicenna in the Middle Ages. It constitutes an original synthesis of the science of the soul, maintained in the peripatetic and neo- Platonic spirit. In book V Avicenna opposes pre-existence and the transmigration of souls. He provides numerous arguments in favour of the immortality of the soul. In this way he breaks away from the typically Greek understanding of the problem of soul. The basis of argumentation for the immortality of the soul is its unity with the body treated as accident. The treatise on soul was received with kindness and interest by scholastics, particularly by Albert the Great. It includes ideas characteristic for Avicenna ideas, for example the story about the Flying Man resembling Cartesian cogito.

The work provides an analysis of the first description of the creation (Gen 1) from the perspective of various categories of created entities, as reflected in the triple use of the verb ברא. Each occurrence of this verb in this biblical text means creating something new and adding this new entity to an already existing world, which gives rise to a new category of created things. The first such category are inanimate things which receive existence and are made only of dead matter. The second category are living creatures which have a body made of the same matter, but who also receive the element of life. The third category is man, who has a body made of the same matter, with the same element of life, but also the third element which makes him similar to God, in fact, God’s image. That third element is not named in the text, but we may see here what we call a soul. So, having a soul distinguishes man from all other beings created by God: Only man has a soul. Animals do not have it, nor do plants, nor the sun and the moon, which were idolized by the ancients -- none of these has a soul but instead belong to the realm of dead matter.

The article presents insights on the nature of the Church which are to be gained from reading the autobiographical book of St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus, The Story of a Soul. As indicated by the title of the book, the soul is the central personal reality and agency of spiritual transaction. It is within the sphere of the soul that the person first lives the sacramentality of the Church as a source of encounter with God that opens onto the possibility of a relationship of love. Divine love in turn expands the natural capacities of the soul to encompass others, even strangers, in the life of one’s soul as a living member of the community of the Church, thus also giving them a share in the spiritual gifts of Christ mediated by the Church. Special attention is paid to the conformity of Thérèse’s experience of soul transforming divine love with that of other saints and mystics throughout history, as expressed by the metaphor of iron and fire.

The article reconstructs the conception of the soul that emerges from the writings of Torquato Tasso. The analysis of the Allegory of Jerusalem Delivered, of the correspondence which arose from the revision of the poem and of some fragments of other works, centres on the relationship between reason and passions. It shows that Tasso’s concept of the harmony of the soul is analogous to his concept of the epos. Both are founded on two principles: that of unity composed of opposites and that of the functional indispensability of all constitutive parts. There is a relationship of subordination and a relationship of interdependence between reason and the irrational part of the soul. Tasso has a positive view of the intense affetti, as drivers of magnificent actions and as foundations on which a person can develop his/her virtues.

The atoms of Democritus keep properties similar to the soul because they possess the ability for spontaneous movement. Simplikios wrote that “atoms move in all directions”. In accordance with Greek ideas only the soul has the ability for spontaneous movement. Krokiewicz shows why “atomism - despite its genius – did not gain the acknowledgement among Hellenic thinkers”. Like the body, the human soul is composed of atoms which are subject to the physical necessity. A human being in accordance with his own nature can influence atoms of which body and soul are each composed. He can either make an order among these atoms, or a chaos. Atoms serve Democritus as the support for integrating the human reason with the ratio-nality of the world. They are also the basis for theoretical understanding of the mechanisms of the world.
