Danger of Social Exclusion among Secondary School Students from the Lublin VoivodeshipTh e author presents the results of the survey conducted among nearly 900 secondaryschool students in the spring of 2011. Respondents were randomly selected fromschools located in the Lublin voivodeship. Th e diagnosis of threat of social exclusionhas been made using original questionnaire. To assess the range of danger of socialexclusion, there were used the shares of respondents characterized by values of individualindicators that point to the unfavorable situation in each of the dimensions(structural, fi nancial, social, emotional, educational). Moreover, author checked theintensity of danger (shaped by the coexistence of positive values of exclusion indicators)and explored whether gender and type of residence are important determinants.Analysis of the collected data showed that in some areas of social exclusion,there are threats to life chances of young people.

The problem of social exclusion has remained the centre of attention in Europe for several years now. To emphasise its importance, year 2010 was European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion. This significant social problem is existent in many domains. The term of social exclusions, used alternatively with social marginalisation has been in use since the 1960’s. Exclusion can be understood both as a status and as a process. Exclusion occurs when someone’s basic social laws cannot be respected. The state of Poland experiences poverty which results from the lack of means that would allow to fulfill basic needs which sometimes are exclusion’s both a cause and a consequence. One of the ‘faces’ of social exclusion is the financial one, understood as the lack of access to necessary financial services. However, there are many tools to prevent this form of exclusion. The author concentrated on those forms which are a social initiative, rather than the state’s. Therefore quasi barter tools, such as Local Exchange and Trade Systems (LETS) or time dollars as well as commercial tools known as social lending were analysed. The author also shows the meaning of initiatives such as slow life as well as co-housing indicating that local societies have a large and varied arsenal, that – if used properly – can prevent the ‘plaque of the 21st century’, as some call the social exclusion often stemming from the individual’s alienation. Those instruments indicate the important role of society’s self-organisation. Due to its origin it is in many cases much more effective than formal and by that inflexible state bodies’ activities. However, this does not mean that local societies should replace the state structures. They are, and should remain, complementary to state help.

This paper provides a possible answer to the question of why so few people with disabilities enter the labor market. Introductory remarks on the importance of work and being employed in human life are followed by different definitions of disability. By reference to the basic facts about employing people with disabilities in Poland, the author identifies and examines the obstacles that make it difficult for a disabled person to get a job. Along with architectural barriers in the workplace and unfavorable attitude of the employers, there is another factor that narrows down the range of job offers available to disabled individuals: an average level of education in this group of people, comparing to others, is lower. As a consequence, job and life opportunities for this social group remain significantly limited.

The aim of the article is to present the situation of children in Poland in the light of the analysis of documents of public institutions and non-governmental organizations whose domain of activity is the protection of children’s rights. The context of the analyzes undertaken by the authors is an interdisciplinary current of childhood studies, and in particular the discourses devoted to caring for a child. Nowadays, the most visible discourse of child’s well-being requires observing particular areas of children’s participation in social life and asking questions about the actual situation of the child in our country, development opportunities and difficulties in implementing children’s rights and ensuring its well-being. This means attempting to describe a child’s stained glass window „being in life”, actual or only apparent participation in particular areas of child’s activity in recent years.

This paper discusses the results of two empirical research projects on consumer micro-loans in Poland recently conducted at the Institute of Applied Social Sciences (University of Warsaw) and the Institute of Justice. The text summarizes the main findings of both studies and focuses on their main common thread: the various dimensions of social exclusion among average consumers who enter the loan market. The text argues that individuals who take consumer loans usually experience financial exclusion, which in turn prevents them from obtaining the cheaper credit available from banks. At the same time, by entering the loan market individuals de facto exclude themselves from effective legal protection (from courts and administrative bodies), which should be provided as an element of the rule of law in a democratic state. Building on these premises, the concept of “cascade exclusion” is proposed as an analytical framework for theses on interrelated dimensions of exclusion.

Polish legislator has defined social employment as providing certain categories of people who are threatened or affected by social exclusion (e.g. unemployment, homeless or addicted) with some opportunities to either participate in workshops that are run in centres for social integration clubs or take up supported employment. Social employment understood in this way is to aim at social reintegration that leads to restoring and maintaining the skills to participate in the life of a particular local community, and to perform social roles in one's place of work and domicile. In addition, social employment is supposed to result in vocational reintegration that leads to restoring the abilities to provide work on the labour market. The legal institution in question is, therefore, linked to a new meaning of employment that goes beyond the Polish Labour Code provisions. As it has been agreed, work is not only a source of income but it also may help one's recovery of employability and self-confidence.

The social assistance system faces challenges related to the emergence of new problems (e.g., migration processes, military conflicts). The ACTTE project was prepared in response to these needs. It is based on the Empowerment concept, which emphasises the social strengthening and restoration of people’s total possible participation. One of the project’s tasks was to conduct research. Its methodology was based on the action research concept. As part of the research, interviews were conducted. Data were collected on participants’ experiences gained during the training and utilising the acquired knowledge and skills in professional practice. The results are presented in the article.

Artykuł stanowi przegląd wiedzy na temat problematyki wykluczenia społecznego. Przedstawiono w nim dominujące modele teoretyczne opisujące to zjawisko. Omówiono znaczenie i wartość przynależności i wsparcia grupy społecznej. Następnie zaprezentowano możliwe skutki wykluczenia społecznego, wskazując na jego negatywne konsekwencje. Przedstawiono również wyniki badań, świadczące o istnieniu dwóch różnych sposobów postępowania jako skutków wykluczenia: agresji lub zachowań prospołecznych. Zaprezentowano także kierunki dalszych badań nad fenomenem ostracyzmu.
The article provides an overview of knowledge on social exclusion. It presents the dominant theoretical models describing this phenomenon. The meaning and importance of the sense of belonging and social support from a group is discussed. The possible consequences of social exclusion are then presented, and particularly the negative outcomes are highlighted. Both empirical findings and real life examples showing the occurrence of two different responses to social exclusion: aggression and prosocial behavior are described. Finally, the directions of further research on the ostracism phenomenon are presented.

This aim of this article is to present the research process using the action research method in the project titled “Development  of  the  empowerment  of  educators  and  beneficiaries  in  the  field  of  youth  at  risk  and  social exclusion” implemented within the Erasmus Plus programme in which the author of this article participated. The process of operationalisation of the social exclusion category and the characteristics of the methodology of action research were performed in this article. The project objectives were set out and the team appointed to carry out the research on the issue of the development of the empowerment of educators and beneficiaries working with adults at risk of social exclusion was described. The article subjects the research process implemented by the team of investigators to analysis and identifies the turning points in this process. Conclusions concerning the specificity and usefulness of action research in searching for social practice solutions in the field of social exclusion have also been provided on the basis of practical experience.

Purpose: The scientific objective of this research was to determine social groups affected by exclusion in Polish health care. Materials and methods: Survey was carried out among local government units and nongovernmental organizations by using authorial questionnaire distributed towards representative research group selected. Results: This work depicts activities of social welfare centers in cooperation with non-profit sector entities, in the field of exclusion from the access to health care benefits in Poland, appointing circumstances, causes and the range of this exclusion. It presents the results of the countrywide research in the context of structure and tasks of the health care, but also two points of view (institutional and social one) for resolving the same population issues. Conclusions: On the basis of the conducted analyses it has been stated that social exclusion, in the field of health care, is a significant social problem, but the biggest difficulty is the access to the rehabilitation benefits and pharmacological therapy

The main aim of this article is to review the theoretical concepts and selected studies relating to the stigmatization and exclusion of ill and disabled people, their sources, mechanisms and effects, with particular attention to the ethical dimension of this phenomenon. Psychological costs, understood as negative emotions, or some kind of psychological discomfort, are the result of differences between the states of the ideal and the real.Ill and disabled people are often subject to negative stereotypes that are unfounded, baseless, unjustified, unfair and harmful. It is very important to prevent stigmatization and social exclusion of these people, but to do this it is needed to diagnose the problem of stigmatization itself.

the leading social issues. Particular importance is given to the problem of its proper management. This article is devoted to the issues of leisure time as a social work domain. The starting point was an attempt to determine the discussed concept. The main aspects of leisure time and the features of leisure time activity were indicated. Then – referring to the classification of selected authors – the basic functions of leisure time were characterized, including the perspective of social pedagogy (having a rest, playing, self-development). Next, the essence of social work was defined and its essential functions were listed. Finally, the attention was paid to leisure time as an important indicator of social participation and one of the key domains of social work. Here the concept of Pierre Bourdieu’s capital was referred to. In the final part of the study, the educational dimension of social work in the context of leisure time was pointed out.

The modern world is currently facing new social threats, which pose a challenge to the existing aid systems. Circumstances like intensive migration processes or the uncertain situation resulting from ongoing military conflicts cause increased cultural differences, which intensify the marginalisation and social exclusion of minority groups. The Acting in Context by Training the Trainers in Social Empowerment (ACTTE) project was prepared to respond to emerging needs. The project was implemented in a consortium of 4 universities and 4 NGOs from Poland, France, Spain, Italy, and Belgium. The main goals of the project were: (1) development of tools for intervention work (toolbox) based on the Empowerment concept (emphasising increased control over one’s own life, self-confidence, and one’s abilities, and social integration among recipients of aid activities) for employees of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) working with marginalised and socially excluded people as well as academic teachers educating future educators and social workers, (2) developing competencies/skills in DPA (Developing the Power to Act) – an approach using the concept of Empowerment in people participating in training (both NGO employees and academic teachers). The article focuses on the project’s implementation process.

Social inclusion of the seniors should be conducted on all levels of the social policy, however the most important role should be played by the local governments. Only on the local level it is possible to recognize the reasons for social exclusion and create a system in which a number of entities will include the eldest citizens to the society by way of a process of social activation. The process of activation should be programmed, realized and monitored, because only then it will become a successful process which will create a real chance to counteract social exclusion of seniors. In the introduction to the article, the author presents the theoretical aspects of social exclusion and the goals of the inclusion process. In the part devoted to the abilities of influencing social policies by the local government, the author presents an example of Częstochowa as a city that has created a senior aid program. In the third part of the article the author presents the results of the studies based on the monographic sheets of the Senior Initiative Bank, according to which, the range of the activation activities for the local senior society can be evaluated.

Opis:
Migration policy of the European Union countries underwent significant changes over the past decades. They are particularly interesting in the case of „old“ EU countries, where the migrants movement is an effect of the colonial past and the demand for labour force. There’re analysed three essential key stages of migration policy (guest workers, multi-cultural and citizenship approach). Netherlands was the reference point, because of its colonial past, the specificity of migrant diasporas structure and problems. There’re described sociocultural conditions and examples of action projects realised in the context of social exclusion and marginalisation and also critical opinions. Special attention was paid to changes in patterning, effects of migration that took place in recent years as well as prevention projects based on local communities.

Opis:
Results of many studies show that caring for a child with Down syndrome can be a source of burden. Parents of these children face many financial, medical, social and psychological challenges. The main objective of this study was to answer two questions: (a) whether perceived social support mediates the relationship between perceived stress and psychological well-being among parents of children with Down syndrome, (b) whether there is any difference in the level of perceived stress between parents who conceive their parenthood in different categories such as burden or satisfaction-happiness. Data were collected from a total sample of 126 parents (75 mothers and 51 fathers). Mediation analysis has shown that social support is a partial mediator between perceived stress and psychological well-being in the group of parents of children with Down syndrome. Moreover, parents who viewed their parenthood as a burden reported a lower level of perceived social support than parents who reported their parenthood as satisfaction-happiness. This study can be helpful in a better understanding of the role of social support in the process of raising a child with Down syndrome.

Opis:
Voluntary involvement may be one of the most efficient instruments policy combating exclusion. By shaping proper civic attitudes, by a possibility of gaining professional experience and contacting various groups, people who are members of groups threatened with social exclusion have the possibility to test their chances at the labor market. The article presents the value of voluntary service as an efficient tool for counteracting social exclusion, especially with respect to young people who remain unemployed, and whose situation at the open labor market is unfavorable. Social and professional activation realized through voluntary service is presented in the context of integration activities of the European Union, as well as Polish documents referring to realization of the social cohesion policy.

The article has been touched the problem of NEET s in the EU, as a special case of unemployed young people. The problems of aging and old age is the subject of increasingly undertaken research and theoretical considerations. The aging population raises new challenges, sets more and more new areas of research. In the context of rapidly progressive changes, one of the major problems is loneliness and isolation. Older people experience it in a more poignant and specific way than people from other age groups. Aim. The aim of this thesis is to present the impact of students exclusion (including SPEs) on their virtual behaviour in social media. Students with no special educational needs and those with SEN were taken into account. The relationship between exclusion of SPE and digitisation exclusion will be indicated . In addition, social exclusion in the family area was included. Methods: The analysis was based on statistical methods, such as: range, standard deviation, variance. Surveys were used. They were conducted on the Internet through the Facebook social portal on a national and global scale. Results: Respondents from around the world feel more excluded by the SPE than respondents in Poland. In contrast, respondents from the SPE use fewer social networking sites than in groups of computer players, both in Poland and worldwide. Conclusions: In Poland, SPE is not a barrier to communication with peers for most respondents, unlike global respondents. Respondents from the SPE spend less time on social portals because it absorbs their time devoted to learning, which can be an indicator of digital exclusion. Cognitive value: The originality of the research is to focus on introducing the global and Polish scale of the problem excluding students from SPE from the social media, which was calculated by the author’s method based on the indicator digital exclusion.
