The goal of the current paper is to verify how an entrepreneur’s structural, relational and cognitive social capital levels are perceived by young people in Poland. The research involved a group of 374 undergraduate business students from a Polish university as participants. Participants completed a survey on entrepreneurial cognitions. It was found that participants assess the level of an entrepreneur’s social capital as relatively low. Due to the fact that social capital, and its different dimensions, serve different purposes in the process of venture creation, the result obtained can be considered alarming. Its practical implications are related to the necessity to review and design activities facilitating the development of an entrepreneurial culture in Poland. The value and the originality of the paper lie in the approach that allowed us to investigate which dimensions of an entrepreneur’s social capital are seen as particularly weak by people for whom launching a new business is a viable option in the near future.

The concept of capital is one of the most noticeable and at the same time the most unclear concepts organizing not only the field of social sciences, but also the public debate in Poland and in the world. The article analyses two ways of conceptualization of the capital rooted in political and neoclassical economy together with their sociological modifications. The aim of this short reconstruction is to present a complex relation between the economic capital and the social capital treated as moral capital. This ambiguity induces us to ask a question about the significance of shifting this concept from the field of economic analyses to the centre of sociological theories in the context of crisis and transformations of late capitalism.

For more than 20 years, social capital has been gaining popularity both among researchers and policy makers. However, this theory has just reached its maturity. The paper presents classical and critical approaches to the concept. Main aspects and types of social capital are distinguished, followed by a description of the most relevant model for empirical research. Finally, the most important research fields are discussed, including mechanisms explaining the influence of social capital on other social, political and economical phenomena.

Opis:
The paper is devoted to the subject of social trust and its relationship to social capital. It intends to answer the question to what extent and why the level of trust to unknown members of the society, being the principal element of the social capital, is different across European countries. The first part of the paper is devoted to the review of definitions linked to social capital, trust and trustworthiness. Among many definitions of social capital for the needs of this paper the following one, coming from [Robison et al. 2002, p.6] was adopted. “Social capital is a person’s or group’s sympathy toward another person or group, that may produce a potential benefit, advantage, and preferential treatment for another person or group of persons beyond that expected in an exchange relationship”. The essential importance of social trust for social capital was underlined. The different hypothetical factors potentially underpinning the level of social trust were indicated, among others: quality of institutions functioning in a given society, cultural norms and personal features of the individual citizens. To answer the question about the differentiation of trust and its underpinnings in European countries, the data coming from the European Social Survey for 2006 were used. In the beginning, on the basis of the features potentially correlated with social capital, the European countries were partitioned into three groups. The first group contained mostly Western European countries, the second – Scandinavian countries with very high social trust but without high preference for fairness, and the third one – Eastern (and partly Southern) European countries with very low trust and rather high preference for fairness. The level of social trust was the feature differentiating those groups in the strongest way. In the next step of the research, using the hypotheses formulated in the literature, the degree of correlation between social trust and its hypothetical underpinnings was analysed. This research revealed that the strongest underpinnings for the whole group of European countries stemmed from the assessment of political institutions and of the state of economy, and, next, from the assessment of respondent’s control of their life. The levels of those features were highly differentiated among the groups of countries previously distinguished. In particular, low assessment of political institutions and of the state of the economy and low optimism and of control on one’s life seem to contribute to low social trust in post-socialist countries.

The main goal of the work is to identify the relations between features categories describing social capital. In order to solve this task the multidimensional correspondence analysis (cross-compliance) was used. The source of data were the questionnaires collected among farms owners in the Wielkopolska region in 2011. During the research there were accepted the following categories of dependent variable: preferred managerial role in team work or executive worker. The category related to preferred managerial role in team is strongly connected with the category indicating that farm success depends on a business concept. The preferred managerial role in team is related to membership in productional group as well as to attitude indicating a trust to the majority of people.

The aim of the work was to present the relationship between the development of social capital and corruption on the basis of new growth and knowledge management theories. Corruption was regarded in this work as a brake on the country’s productivity growth through its impact on the rate and quality of structural changes in an economy, and therefore its welfare. The article discussed possible damages caused by corruption to the efforts in the development of social capital, especially in public administration, which could include, for example, fall in different types of standards and mutual trust of social life participants. Based on the studies of international institutions as World Bank, World Economic Forum and Legatum Institute was also analyzed the relationship between selected indicators of corruption and social capital levels on a group of 104 countries by means of statistical methods in 2009–2010. The results confirmed the presence of co-dependence between an increase in social capital level and a decline of corruption scale in the surveyed countries.

People with disabilities form a group which is threatened by social exclusion. Social sciences are becoming more and more concerned about social capital issues in terms of creating programmes for social inclusion of various marginalised groups. The paper discusses selected concepts of social capital according to James Coleman, Nan Lin, Francis Fukuyama and Robert D. Putnam. The author of the paper has made a comparative analysis of the results of various authors’ research on the social capital of the non-disabled (fully-fit) and the disabled in terms of: (1) social networks, (2) social trust, (3) compliance with social rules, social exchange and cooperation, (4) communication skills and (5) feeling of physical and mental health. The paper presents argumentation on a macrosystem, mesocosm and microsystem level justifying the need to use social capital as a theoretical support for creating social inclusion network in relation to the disabled. The issue is to leave a charity and paternal model applied in the activities for persons with disabilities and to follow the model of inclusion and participation. The discussion is supplemented by a description of challenges that special education is facing in terms of further research work on social capital.

Opis:
Social capital representing among other things voluntary cooperation, social networks density and generalized trust has become popular in economics in the 90s. A number of papers has confirmed positive relationship between social capital measures and economic growth. In our opinion family-based social capital (representing the integrity of families) is important component of social capital. Sociological and psychological knowledge allow us to identify the family as a source of human bonds, man’s happiness and life quality. Presumably happy persons better fulfill their social and economic roles. For example – they work and cooperate more efficiently. Therefore, we have formulated a hypothesis that the family social capital – family bonds – have an influence on economic growth. Being more precise, the bigger the number of divorces in relation to contracted marriages as an indicator of family disintegration, the slower is economic growth. This hypothesis has been confirmed in the Polish economy in the years 1963–2006 as well as in the 15 European Union countries panel data (1972–2007). The estimations are based on the econometric model of GDP growth, into which, alongside the divorces/marriages ratio (family disintegration) investment rate, labour growth and CPI inflation have been introduced. Our results indicate that when divorces/marriages ratio rise by 10 p.p. economic growth lowers in 15 European Union countries by 0.5 p.p. The same in Poland makes economic growth lower by 1.8 p.p. These results are not fully comparable, due to differences in model specification and analyzed periods.

Opis:
The article deals with the study of the role of human and social capital in shaping the processes of regional development in Poland in 2002–2014. The study is aimed at seeking answers to the question whether and to what extent the characteristics of human and social capital development impeded or fostered the achievement of convergence in living standards (GDP per capita) in regional systems (NUTS-2). The following tools were used: multidimensional statistical exploratory analysis – the cluster analysis (Ward’s, k-means), linear ordering – as well as correlation analysis and measures of statistical dispersion. The analysis confirm a stronger link of the processes of economic development in Polish regions with human capital than in those with social capital, whereby there is evidence indicating that it was rather a higher level of the economic development that stimulated changes in human capital and the reverse impact of human capital on the change in the GDP per capita was weaker. When it comes to the educational component of human capital, it can be assumed that this component of human capital could have had a more polarizing than converging impact. The social capital did not mitigate nor strengthen the polarizing impact of human capital. There was, therefore, no confirmation to the hypothesis that intangible factors – human and social capitals – contributed to the convergence in living standards among regions in Poland in 2002–2014.

The aim of this work was to show the possible impact of social capital on productivity of the economy. That impact can be measured by such indicators of productivity of the economy as used in our study: the GDP, the total value added of the economy (TVE), and the GNI per total labour force. Thus, this paper was organized as follows: its first part presents the relationship between the development of social capital and productivity growth of the country in the light of the economic development theory. In this context, it is pointed out that the significance of social capital as a component of the productivity potential of a given country increases when such country moves to the next stages of economic development. Therefore, social capital becomes a very important driver of the upgrading of national incomes in those countries, in which competitive advantages are based primarily on intellectual capital assets. The another part of the paper describes the methodology and the results of a research conducted on a group of 100 countries in the years 2012-2013 with an aim to illustrate the link between social capital and productivity of the economy as a whole referred to, or indicated, in the first part of the study. The results of the research allowed us to formulate a conclusion that without an appropriate ethical behaviour, not only in business, the productivity growth is hampered because it translates into a lower level of trust and unwillingness to cooperate. In other words, as, among others, W. Bartoszewski stressed, "it is worth to be decent".

Purpose: The purpose of the work is diagnosis and assessment the state of the internal social capital of enterprises in Poland and the differences between companies with different characteristics. The aim of the study is also to indicate the relationship between an organisation's social capital level and its activities' effects. 9 Design/methodology/approach: The paper presents the results of own study conducted on a sample of 650 micro, small, medium and large companies in Poland. The model presented by Westlund and Nilsson (2005) was used in the analysis, various dimensions of this capital (structural, relational and cognitive) were also explored. Descriptive statistics, non-parametric testing methods (Chi2 independence test) and classification methods using the CHAID method were used. Findings: Results suggest that about ¾ of companies showed the presence of positive phenomena in the social capital field. However, there are statistically significant differences between companies of different sizes, age, status (headquarters, branch, independent organisation), and the origin of capital (domestic, foreign, mixed). The research also shows that companies perceive the relationship of internal social capital with the company's development and relations with their partners.

Opis:
Economic growth is mostly explained by investments and employment growth. Since the mid 1990s various social categories have been introduced into the economic growth analysis such as trust, crime and income inequality etc. According to sociology and psychology, it is the family that constitutes interpersonal ties and is an indicator of happiness and quality of life. It can be said that happy people better fulfil their social roles and also work better. We set a hypothesis that the family ties have an influence on economic growth. More precisely: the more divorces (compared to newly couples), the slower economic growth. This hypothesis was confirmed in an analysis of Poland’s economy in the years 1967–2006. Due to the disintegration of family ties measured by the above mentioned divorce rate Poland’s annual economic growth was slowed by about a 0.6 percentage point on average. This estimation is based on a GDP growth model which, along with the divorce rate, also includes employment dynamics, invest rate and crime rate.

The consequence of the dynamically ongoing changes is a growing area of uncertainty and social risks. Inability to cope with the permanently occurring uncertainty on the one hand leads to several negative consequences, such as a sense of alienation, meaninglessness, or helplessness, and on the other – increases the need for development of powers to plan one’s own career path or to cope with new challenges. The demand for counseling is not only in individuals who want to quickly and effectively develop their own careers, but also in individuals that fall out of the mainstream, and are not able to function in the realities of today’s labour markets or to fulfil their professional and family roles. The paper presents an analysis of the role of guidance, resulting from the implementation of modern paradigms of social policy (anticipatory, investment, activating), and biographical and emancipation counselling models in increasing human and social capital.

T.W. Schultz, G.S. Becker and J. Mincer are regarded as the creators of the concepts and theories of human capital. At the beginning of the 60s of the twentieth century they got interested in this subject. However, the studies of the role of the man as well as their skills in the economy had been carried out before. Over the years, human capital was considered as an element of intellectual capital. Both of these capitals and their development are included in the activity of enterprises. This article presents the genesis and essence of the recognition of human capital as a part of the intellectual capital comprising the reflections of some economists on human capital and the interpretation of intellectual capital issue, as well as its components. Due to limited length of the article only a selective presentation of views of researchers dealing with depicted issues was possible.

Opis:
The paper focuses on the issues regarding the development and accumulation of human capital in Poland in 1998-2012, which have been analysed in respect of the formation of social capital resources. The project aims to verify a hypothesis assuming that Poland is characterized by an insufficient synergy in the development of these two types of capital. It has been presumed that this inconsistency reduces the benefits flowing from human capital accumulation processes and may create a significant barrier to achieving a higher level of development. These speculations have been presented in a broader view on the factors which „mobilize” the human capital to function – from the perspective of the components comprising the intellectual capital. In order to illustrate the position of Poland and the challenges facing the country, the analysis has been formed in an international context. The comparative analyses also use the data provided by various social surveys, such as e.g. the European Social Value, the World Values Survey, the Social Diagnosis, the World Economic Forum’s reports, the results of the research by C. Yeh-Yun Lin and L. Edvinsson (conducted among the group of 40 countries in 1995-2008) as well as the author’s own research work. The confrontation of the paths of the development of human capital and social capital in Poland in 1998-2012 reveals a positive upward trend for these two types of capital. Such harmony towards the development may largely be attributed to the positive influence of human capital on social capital. Low social capital resources make it difficult for such a relationship to occur the other way round. However, this could hardly be called the integration of development processes, since the fundamental problem concerns the differential development dynamics of these two types of capital (higher for human capital, lower for social capital), as well as extremely low social capital resources in Poland at the beginning of the transformation. This indicates that differences in human and social capital may continue to increase in the future. The insufficient integration of the development of human and social capital seems as a severe limitation of the innovativeness and the effective use of human capital in action.

Together with the growing level of the digitalization in the field of multimedia, also convergence of media, information and digital literacy have been growing up. In case of the traditional mass media, it was important to have skills to use the media content in a critical, aware and selective way. Nevertheless, in the era of the Internet and extended availability of information in the digital form, the importance of information and digital technologies literacy also grows. It regards to some extent the technical ability to use particular technological solutions, but also forming aware and active consumers and authors of the media content. The main goal of this paper is researching the relation between forming the media literacy as a component of human capital, and the realization the European Union’s targets in the area of building a knowledge-based economy. On the basis of the subject-matter literature and other source materials a hypothesis, which classifies the media education as a key process during creating a single European information space, shall be verified. In the first part of the paper, the author concentrates on presenting the dependence between human, personal and social capital. Next, on the basis of the European definition of media literacy, the author examines capabilities of achieving progress in the field of media education in terms of the present European audiovisual policy.

In the era of dynamic changes in a world, multiculturalism turns out to be an increasingly important part of today's international security environment. So, more and more legitimate are questions regarding the limits of tolerance for the progressive unification and universalization of cultural patterns and a shape of immigration policies, so that the resulting mix of ethnicity is not a source of danger to the foundations of the existence and development of a native civilization. The sector of cultural security is undoubtedly a very important element of national security systems and as such should be treated with greater seriousness and care, than it is today.

Thanks to what follows, one is able to establish whether the conception of various capitals stands up to analytical scrutiny. And an outcome of this examination has even broader relevanceBourdieu is the most prolific exponent of an entire trend, much in vogue in social science recently. It would be difficult to indicate a field of inquiry in which this or that unorthodox, extra-economic concept of capital has not been deployed as a research tool. The result of this critical analysis are not encouraging; Bourdieu’s framework is plagued by economism or economic imperialism, and suffers from other limitations as well.

The essay is dedicated to the influence of the Protestantism on economic effectiveness. According to the well-known Max Weber’s thesis the Christian culture was of crucial significance for the incremental creation of the market economy principles. In turn the Protestantism formed fundamental background for „modern rational capitalism”. Richard Swedberg, famous economic sociologist, following Max Weber, pointed out three factors bound up with Protestantism that had an impact on modern capitalism. Firstly, Dr Martin Luther stressed that the calling of man is the everyday solid work. Secondly, Jean Calvin defined economic success as the proof of the grace of Lord. Thirdly, American Protestantism demands absolute obedience to the commandments and honest behaviour towards other people. The diligence, activity and honesty were the source of trust among people (today defined as a component of „social capital”). The main thesis of the essay focused on the role of Protestant inspiration in forming trust as the source of contemporary economic effectiveness. Sociological research (among others conducted by Ronald Inglehard) proved that relatively high level of trust (especially „bridging social capital”) is a vital feature of highly developed economies of the Protestant countries. However, it should be stressed that there exists no simple cause-effect relationship between these two phenomena. Rather, they are aspects of a complex correlation network.

Based on a decade of multisite observations on three continents I show that a particular type of an activity that Putnam claimed was disappearing-face-to-face, tabletop gaming-is thriving, and often doing so in third-place-like venues that Oldenburg described as endangered-local cafés and clubs. I present data on the proliferation of related leisure activities, including an estimate of their longitudinal and geographical spread and popularity. I also illustrate how social capital is created in physical gaming venues, and propose a six-type classification of those venues.

Social capital, even being an ambiguous phenomenon with number of different definitions, is considered as a one of the important factors of local community’s development. The author believes that social capital is a kind of feature or resource of a local community that may contribute to the effective activity of both individual and collective social actors. Relying on the recent sociological research (Public Opinion Research Center, Social Diagnosis) the author attempts to assess the capacity of Polish rural areas in terms of social capital. In order to describe the condition of social capital, the indicators referring to trust, solidarity, membership in non-governmental organizations, information, communication, social integration, and subjectivity are used. The data reveals that the level of social capital in rural areas of Poland is low and no increase can be clearly observed. Instead there are reasons to doubt in the fast development of rural social capital in the near future.

Opis:
The main objective of this paper is to identify the role of intangible factors in the process of enterprise internationalization. In particular, in the era of turbo-capitalism, the informal institution of social capital becomes of global signif-icance and covers both social norms and values such as trust, loyalty and reliability. These resources can significantly reduce the uncertainty and distrust in the activities of business entities. In addition, they constitute the foundation of business networks, including in particular those of an informal nature, which (in the case when a company does not possess sufficient resources and skills) can become an important method to gain new knowledge about unknown foreign markets. The partnership within networks also allows for the reduction of transaction costs. Thus, it can forego gaining competitive advantage in the international arena. Therefore, the article raises three fundamental questions about the role of social capital in the internationalized business. The answers to these questions are based on the results of empirical research conducted in the years 2011-2012 among food processing SMEs in selected districts of Greater Poland.

New Regionalism as a paradigm for regional development emphasizes smart, inclusive and sustainable economies. Purpose: Identification of the connections between tenant participation in social housing and the theory of social capital and social sustainability. Design/methodology/approach: Critical analysis of Polish and foreign literature on tenant participation, social capital and social sustainability. The authors adapted various concepts of social capital as the theoretical basis. Findings: In the literature on the subject, two meanings of the term social sustainability may be distinguished – the so-called soft application of the term and a more “severe” one, which covers the issues of changing the balance of power and profound social changes. The authors have attempted to delineate the third perspective, putting forward a thesis that the most useful for research on social housing is Coleman’s concept of social capital, where social capital is related to the capital of an individual. In studies on the housing environment in the social housing stock, it is necessary to identify the social capital of residents in the context of the environment, i.e. housing estates, by examining the level of participation of tenants in the decision-making process. Originality and value: The concepts of tenant participation, social capital and social sustainability are frequent subjects of research. However, these terms are rarely combined, which determines the originality of the proposed approach. The study is of practical importance in relation to social housing, since increasing the social capital of tenants through their participation in the decision-making process is one of the steps towards overcoming the impasse in the field of social sustainability.

Opis:
A social capital is comprehending sociology and economics from the borderland. For the first time P. Bourdieu entered this date into sociological literature in the 1970s. In the today concept of social capital is more and more popular. Recently within 20 years, it is possible to notice the dynamic it still hasn’t received one, particular definition. However the social capital is most often understood as the potential of the cooperation settled in the interpersonal connections and social norms which can bring benefits for persons, groups and societies. Due to the variety of definitions it is hard to make the measurement of the social capital and to determine the factors responsible for its height. Analyzing the social capital of Poland we should consider such factors as: confidence, level of civil society (degree of forming an union of citizens), education and quality and life satisfaction of Poles. Sociologists and economists think that the social capital is a crucial source for achieving the prosperity and the auspiciousness of the country’s economy. At present all research is showing that in Poland there is a deficit of the social capital caused by capital dramatically low confidence level.
Kapitał społeczny to pojęcie z pogranicza socjologii i ekonomii. Termin ten po raz pierwszy wprowadził do literatury socjologicznej P. Bourdieu w latach 70. XX w.

Along with the aging of the Polish society the interest of various disciplines in the elderly people life quality is growing. Researchers have different perceptions about quality of life. They define the concept of quality of life both subjectively, as an evaluation standard of life, and objectively, as a sum of various forms of the capital that have seniors at their disposal. In this article the author attempts to present the issue of the quality of life of seniors in the context of social and symbolic capital of older people. The considerations are supplemented with two empirical illustrations.

Academic culture is a set of rules (norms and values) regulating the institution of the university. The central component of academic culture is autonomy both in the sense of independence from external interference and the capacity to decide on research, teaching and organization of the university. Autonomy is endangered by the interference in academic culture of other cultural complexes characteristic for modern society: corporate culture, business culture, bureaucratic culture, financial culture, consumer culture. The resulting cultural clash is the reason for current crisis of the university. The defense of autonomy is the ethical and professional duty of scholars.

The paper attempts to search for arguments justifying an educational strategy aiming at preventing a social exclusion of the disabled by building social capital. The research review shows that people with some disabilities present a low level of social participation, which indicates a fragile nature of social capital among members of this group. Therefore, it was assumed that a significant form of preventing social exclusion can be education that aims at developing social skills and the ability to cooperate of the disabled. Activating the resources of social capital and benefiting from them requires from people to cooperate and act in a coordinated manner.

Subject and purpose of work: The study aims to explore the role of social capital in the new concept of “effective” cluster, by exploiting not only its human and financial assets but also the social networks with the cluster. Materials and methods: The study presents the case-study findings of the five life-sciences clusters which were conducted in 2018-2019. Additionally, the article discusses the role of social capital and the collaborative efforts within the life sciences clusters during the Covid-19 pandemic. Results: All the analyzed cluster environments have their own social dynamics. Considering the scale and scope of social ties, the Cambridge and Medicon Valley clusters conform with the concept of the "functional clusters", while the Bay Area and Seattle clusters can be classified as “effective clusters”. Conclusions: All the cluster ecosystems have evolved from different origins and they follow different evolutionary paths. Yet, clusters with richer social capital achieve higher collaborative synergy, leading to an increase in knowledge spillovers and innovations. Public policies should focus on the active promotion of social networks and market-oriented intermediaries connecting main cluster partners.

The aim of the article is to analyse the importance of social capital as a key factor in transforming information resources into knowledge and the process of commercialization. The study is based on the case study method used to present the Institute of Electronic Materials Technology. The authors analyse the role of social capital in creating innovation in the organization’s environment. Social capital plays a significant role in the context of the necessary information resources, its typology, where informal information turns out to be important in creating innovation. The credibility of information sources is determined primarily by the knowledge of the subject and the reliability and intentions shown by the information source. Innovative enterprises, but also research institutes (ITME type), make advanced use of all types of information sources regardless of the type of innovations they introduce. Scientific institutions with low levels of social capital, with sporadic and difficult interactions with external partners, cease to understand the needs of the market and may misdirect scientific development, therefore making poor decisions related to the management of other components of their capital resources.

This paper will present an empirically based analysis of parenting in order to critically examine the work of two major social capital theorists. The work of James S. Coleman and Pierre Bourdieu is much cited, but while both focus on the links between individuals, families and wider social structures, their theories are based on very different interpretations of social capital and its implications. Drawing on qualitative data from a UK based qualitative study of parenting resources this paper will critically assess each theory using case studies. We argue that these two approaches allude to different social resources, with Coleman’s work representing the tightly bonded solidarities more often found among working class communities, while Bourdieu focuses on the more diffuse, instrumental networking most associated with the middle classes.

Purpose – An assessment of the level of social capital in the context of ethnic diversity using the example of the Podlaskie voivodeship. Furthermore, showing the relationship between social capital and local and regional development.Research method – Quantitative and comparative analyses of selected indicators of the surveyed terri-torial units (powiats of the Podlaskie Voivodeship) while maintaining the criterion of ethnic diversity. Data from the Central Statistical Office (Local Data Bank) and the National Electoral Commission for the period 2010-2018 were used. Results – The level of social capital is higher in multi-ethnic powiats, in particular as far as the civic dimension is concerned, which is measured by the use of passive and active voting rights. Similarly, the number of foundations, associations and social organizations per 1,000 inhabitants is higher in multi-ethnic powiats. As far as the level of entrepreneurship is concerned, the majority of powiats of diversi-fied nationalities is insignificant, while single-nation powiats have higher rates in relation to member-ship in sports clubs.Originality / value / implications / recommendations – A thesis which is popular in the subject literature that ethnically diverse areas are characterized by lower social capital is not true in the case of the Podlaskie voivodeship, in which ethnic groups have been present for centuries. Consequently, it may be assumed that ethnic diversity has a negative impact on the level of social capital only temporarily.

Islam is often considered as opposition to secular public life, and it is largely addressed by fixed definitions, institutional organizations, and observable symbols. Moreover, it is treated as the prevailing manifestation of a single Muslim identity. The literature on Turkish Muslim communities in Europe often analyze the institutional character of Islam (i.e., faith-based organizations). Women’s agency in those practices are often neglected. In this article, based on an ethnographic work in my Ph.D. project, I will particularly focus on the social construction of mosques as places of community practices by Turkish Muslim women in the Berlin neighborhoods. Related with a more general discussion on the cultural-religious repertoire of these women and neighborhood networking, I will analyze the religious practices along with community practices. Thus, I will discuss that the mosques are not only physical spaces of prayers, but also socio-political spaces of community construction.

The article aims to analyse the external social capital of Polish enterprises and to assess whether external social capital is related to internal social capital and the declared results of enterprises. To the author's knowledge, a separate measurement of external social capital in enterprises in Poland has not been carried out before, which is a novelty. It continues and complements previous research on internal social capital. The model Westlund and Nilsson proposed was the theoretical basis for the empirical analyses. The research was based on the results of a survey conducted on a sample of 650 micro, small, medium and large companies in Poland. Descriptive statistics, non-parametric testing methods and classification methods using the CHAID method were used in the study. Aggregate measures were also used to determine the level of social capital. The main results are: that age, the size of firms and the nature of the market are characteristics that statistically significantly differentiate enterprises due to the level of external social capital; external social capital is positively and statistically significantly correlated with internal social capital and with declared enterprises’ performance.

Previous research in social science established the existence of mutual relationship between cultural tastes and social networks. What is less known, however, is how this connectivity translates into tangible social benefits (social capital). By applying the resource generator tool, the article explores the extent to which access to different social resources (social capital) is related to pursuing different cultural activities, independent of social standing and network features. Empirically, the possibilities of locally representative survey data (N = 1010) from Poland (2017) are exploited. The analysis brings two main findings: (i) participation in elite culture is positively associated with better access to instrumental resources (lending money, job assistance), (ii) while popular culture is more relevant to “information and (cultural) influences” social capital and to general access to resources. The contribution of the study is to show that cultural consumption may assist in the accumulation of important social resources and thus contribute to solidifying social inequalities

The paper deals with the concept of social capital. The author tries to show the phenomena and processes that the concept expresses. The paper adopts a critical attitude towards the social capital concept. The author argues that social capital, through its complexity and extremely synthetic character, requires to be divided into narrower and more specific concepts that directly refer to the important phenomena and processes of the modern world: education, culture, and economy.

The paper presents the research results of the Innovative Social Investment Strenghtening Communities in Europe (InnoSI) project. The main objective of the paper is to analyse the social investment approach implemented in the practice of social policy in Poland. The social investment instruments established in other selected European countries are also included in this article. After introducing the theoretical and conceptual background of social investment, the following models of social policy in Europe are described: Anglo-Saxon, Continental, Mediterranean and Nordic. The typology proposed by G. Esping-Andersen is used to present the approaches to social investment in four European countries represent four models: the Great Britain, Germany, Greece and Finland. Then the Polish social policy case study is analysed. The results of scientific literature review and policy analysis show that Poland represents another type of social policy model, named as paternalistic-market hybrid, inspired by different European solutions. In this model the social investment instruments like for instance parental leaves, vocational trainings, and social activation of elderly people go together with traditional social compensation and benefits.

Opis:
The article focuses on migration networks and labor migrations by Polish workers seeking employment abroad. The article refers to key theories describing migration processes and analyzing network resources and functions. The authors also evaluate the meaning of trust as a positive factor for migration networks as well as the role of “bridging” and “bonding” social capital and formal and informal networks and their influence on migration processes. The theoretical part of the article is based on the related literature. Migration capital and migration networks are discussed on the basis of existing empirical research and the author’s own research carried out among Polish and German students and college graduates in the partner cities of Rzeszów and Bielefeld in 2010. Two conclusions deserve particular attention, the author says. First, it is difficult to thoroughly explain the significance and level of social capital and changes in the function of migration networks. After Poland joined the EU, the significance of migration networks, both formal and informal, increased. Second, the analysis confirms that substantial changes are taking place in migration processes. Due to their complexity and interdisciplinary nature, these changes require further examination, Barwińska-Małajowicz concludes.
Natomiast podstawą analizy znaczenia i przemian kapitału migracyjnego oraz sieci migracyjnych były wyniki zastanych badań empirycznych, skonfrontowane z wynikami badań własnych, zrealizowanych w 2010 r. wśród polskich i niemieckich studentów i absolwentów uczelni w miastach partnerskich: Rzeszowie i Bielefeld. W okresie poakcesyjnym obserwujemy bowiem z jednej strony wzrost znaczenia sieci migracyjnych, z drugiej osłabienie powiązań, przy czym zmiany te w niektórych sytuacjach dotyczą sieci nieformalnych, kiedy indziej sieci formalnych.

In this study, I investigated how different forms of human capital and social capital of new Chinese immigrants affect their job-search and job transitions in the Flushing area. I conducted sixteen indepth interviews with new Chinese immigrants who were seeking job opportunities within Flushing, documenting not only their personal background but also their immigration and working experiences in both China and the United States. Results indicate that the aggregation of certain human capital has positive influence on immigrants’ income, rather on immigrants’ job-findings and job transitions. The efficiency of social ties, instead of strength of social ties, is a more significant unit of analysis in the co-ethnic labor market. Though immigrants’ efficient social ties may be helpful for finding their first jobs in the U.S., the efficiency of social ties with regards to job-searching may dramatically decrease as immigrants stay longer in the U.S. As a result, social ties may not have a salient influence on immigrants’ job transitions.

The article analyses the role of international migrants in the process of globalisation and cosmopolitisation of “globalising cities”, taking so-called secondary cities as its point of reference in the study of Kraków and Poznań. We posit that the role of migrants in the dual processes of globalisation and cosmopolitisation is contingent on the way in which the city itself has historically gone through the process of ‘globalising’, particularly in how the public sphere has been developed. In the case of the post-Fordist city (Kraków), which developed through the service and creative industries, these processes are more intensive, and migrants themselves are drivers of change. This is not as evident in Fordist-model cities like Poznań that have also experienced migration flows, but where the positioning of migrants in the public sphere is marginal. The findings in the article are based on two research projects, the first from Krakow entitled “The Relationship Between Foreigners and Public Services and the Development of ‘Nighbourliness’ in a ‘Globalizing’ City: A Case Study of Kraków”, and the second within the framework of a doctoral project realised in the Doctoral School of Social Sciences of the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań.

Motivation: Labor market in Poland has been affected by many institutional factors. One of them is social capital, which can be an advantage for its development It influences the ability among the market entities to cooperate with each other and to create their competitiveness on the market. The lack of social capital causes many disadvantages like the lack of ability to cooperate between different actors. That is why strong social capital is a challenge to build long term relations on the labor market. Low social capital or its lack is a barrier in country?s development, weakens the markets, makes the markets impossible to improve in quality. On the basis of the above premises the main hypothesis of the paper claims, that the main barrier which limits the ability among different actors to create social capital on labor market in Poland is low level of trust to each other. Aim: The main cognitive aim of this article is to describe the conducted primary research and identify determinants, especially threats and barriers on labor market in Poland in the points of views of different participants who take part in interactions with the other actors on the labor market (entrepreneurs, employees, employers). Materials and methods: The research had a character of preliminary study. The main research methods used in this article include desk research and primary research with Individual In-Depth Interviews (IDI method) which were conducted among Polish entrepreneurs from March till June 2018 and from October till January 2019. Results: The Respondents, who took part in the research underlined the importance of cooperation and social capital, but they also mentioned about barriers which reduce the level of cooperation and ability to create social capital.

Individuals engaged in the labourmarket use a range of resources embedded in personal networks to improve their chances of getting a new job. Family, friends and acquaintances give access to various resources such as information, knowledge, trust, recommendation, money, etc. that may affect individual’s position on the labour market. Based on data collected with the Resource Generator tool among 9063 residents of Warsaw, we checked how embedded and mobilizable resources of family members, friends, acquaintances (social resources), as well as private resources owned by respondents (personal resources) affect individual’s perceived position on the Warsaw labour market. It was confirmed that chances of getting a job depend on the amount of embedded and mobilizable resources present in personal networks. However, relationship between embeddedness and usability of resources rely on the type of relation (family, friends, acquaintances) maintained by individual. We found that mobilizable resources are perceived as an asset on the labour market, while resources embedded in acquaintances network, that could be just accessed but not used, are considered a threat. At the same time, personal resources of respondents improve perceived chances of getting a new job inWarsaw. The observed dependencies between social and personal, embedded and mobilizable resources prompt a discussion on the shape and role of social capital in the urban labour market.

In the global rankings of generalized trust, Poland occupies a lowly position. Only 1/3 of Poles have a strong trust in strangers and roughly the same number believe that trust in business generally pays off. At the same time, only half of them believe that a market economy based on private enterprise is the best economic system for the country. According to the literature review a major factor in the development of entrepreneurship is trust in other economic actors. The aim of the article is to present the relation between trust and entrepreneurial activities in Poland. In this paper the hypothesis was adopted that the level of trust in the public sphere, especially in business relations in Poland, had an impact on the intensity of entrepreneurial activities. The analysed period comprises the years from 2002 to 2016. The article presents changes in the potential for social trust, including trust in business. Indicators of confidence include the percentage of people that have trust in different actors in Poland. A further part of the paper is devoted to the phenomenon of entrepreneurship in Poland. Among the indicators of entrepreneurship are the number of newly registered and deregistered entities, and entities that are new or deregistered from the REGON register per 10 thousand of population. Moreover, the innovation activity of enterprises in Poland has been described. At the end, relations between trust and entrepreneurial activities in Poland were examined. The data was analysed statistically with Pearson’s correlation coefficients. The analysis of confidence and entrepreneurship is based mainly on the data published by the Polish Central Statistical Office and Public Opinion Research Centre.

A culture of trust leads to better use of knowledge and human skills, so important in an economy based on knowledge, innovation and change. Polish society is characterized by a culture of distrust, and this atmosphere translates into interpersonal relationships in companies. The challenge is therefore to recognize the conditions for building and strengthening organizational trust. Trust is related to personal reliability, which means respecting moral norms and the rights of others. Focusing on the company-employee relationship, in this paper the author has set herself the goal of recognising how – in the context of ethical standards – the culture of trust is shaped in companies in Poland. The introductory – theoretical – part of the study looks at the role of trust in the functioning of an organization. The empirical part includes the available research on moral standards and trust in Polish enterprises. The summary points to the conclusions of the analysis undertaken.

This study focused on the assessment of social capital and the performance of women-owned agricultural based enterprises in Osun State. A multi-stage sampling technique was used to sample 140 respondents. Descriptive, Z-test and regression testing were employed for analyses. A large proportion (83.6%) of the respondents were young adults and middle-aged adults with the mean age being 45.1 years. The majority (76.4%) of the women agripreneurs had a formal education. Most (73.6%) of the respondents got their capital from personal savings and cooperative society. The results indicate that 60.0% of the businesses were new businesses that started from scratch. The results show that most (77.7%) of the women agripreneurs in the study area were involved in social capital with the majority of them in cooperative societies. The mean membership index was 51.8% implying a high number of active members amongst women agripreneurs in an existing association. The mean homogeneity index was 76.5%, implying association was perfectly homogenous. The result shows that the level of trust was generally low among all the enterprises with an index of 31.1%. The mean meeting attendance was 82.5% and the mean labor contribution index was 36.4%. The result shows that members in an association have the highest mean profit of ₦120,656.80 while the respondents that are not in any association have a mean profit of ₦90,295.56. Alsothe findings showed that there was a significant difference in the profit of women agripreneurs who are members of an association and those who are non-members. Out of the five social capital variables included in the regression model, three (homogeneity index, labor contribution index, level of trust) significantly influenced the performance of women agripreneurs in Osun State. Therefore, women agripreneurs in Osun State should be encouraged to belong to a social association since social capital significantly influenced performance.

Although social capital has been often debated in the last 20 years, there is a widely accepted definition missing and the approaches to measuring its size are not very well-developed. Therefore, the definitions of social capital are stated and analysed, whether they are appropriately designed also for measurement purposes. We end up with a division between capital consisting of real capital as fixed and working capital and financial capital on the one hand, and capitals, which are referring to human capital and social capital in a narrow sense on the other hand. The last two are named here as social capital. The stock of the first kind of capital can be expressed as net capital when the liabilities are deducted is booked to the final social balance, as well as the remainder of the stock accounts. The stock of the second one can be identified as social assets reduced by social liabilities. Non-commercial values of economic activities are gathered in social account-ing. With social accounting there are several approaches, however most of them are not developed to such an extent that the social capital can be determined through an adequate ex-post analysis. A welfare economic oriented approach comprising a bookkeeping system helps to determine social capital. Based on the willingness to pay approach a commercial bookkeeping system and an additional social bookkeeping were designed where the respective “private” and additional social capital were verified. Both together show the total social capital related to an economic subject. The result is illustrated by such a social accounting for the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration of the University of Tartu for 2006. The author discusses the limits and possibilities of this kind of social capital determination.

This category consists of: (1) scientific forms of cultural capital, (2) behavior and practices related to science, and (3) scientific forms of social capital. The text presents the development of this concept together with a discussion of its elements and their meaning. Scientific capital can be one of the greatest wealth of society, and its use depends on the future development of not only individual units, but also the country and the possibility of high achievements in the fields of science. This is a very current issue, therefore it is important to better understand the shaping of the science capital of young people. The text also reviews the previous empirical studies devoted to the analyzed category. On this basis, it was concluded that scientific capital as an educational variable is still subjected to reconceptualization, requires refinement and further exploration.

Based on social network theory, the study explained the digital transformation process of startups in Vietnam during the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. The study examined the relationship between social capital, human capital, access to resources, and digital transformation of startups in Vietnam. The study used Partial Least Squares - Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) with a sample size of 230 startups managers. The results show that there are positive and statistically significant relationships between social capital, human capital, access to resources, and digital transformation. The results also reveal the partial mediating roles of access to resources and human capital in the relationship between social capital and digital transformation. The results proposed some managerial implications for startups managers in building relationship networks with stakeholders such as government agencies and business partners (customers, competitors, suppliers, and providers of digital platform services). Through managers' social capital, accessible resources and the improvement of human capital have accelerated digital transformation for startups to escape the crisis of the COVID-19 pandemic. Finally, the study presented some limitations and directions for further research.

The paper focuses on corporate social capital and analyzes the mechanisms in which it influences employee efficiency. The author proposes a model to examine the relationship between social capital and employee efficiency. Łopaciuk-Gonczaryk offers a synthesis of available literature on the subject, with a special emphasis on some of the most controversial problems in this area. The paper describes two types of corporate social capital: bonding capital and bridging capital. They are usually analyzed separately by economists, but Łopaciuk-Gonczaryk looks at them together while examining the influence of social capital on efficiency. She also zeroes in on the interaction between bonding and bridging capital. The theoretical analysis made in the paper should be followed up by empirical research, the author concludes.

However, it remains unfinished task due adequate statutory support of the government. In Indian context the national aspirations, to establish knowledge society in the context of increasing globalization, is based on the assumption that higher and technical education essentially empower people with requisite competitive skills and knowledge. The emerging trends demonstrate consumer driven approach to enhance marginal capital gains in educational investment. The higher education being a powerful tool to build knowledge based society and also a critical input underlying sustainable development has received a significant attention nowadays.

Social capital is considered from at least several viewpoints – as trust, institutions acting as mediators between the state and the individual, and a network of the individual’s relationships. In the third approach, it can be also called the individual social capital. In the discussed research, it was measured using the resource generator based on the concept of T.Snijders. The research carried out among 369 respondents aged 18 – 34, who were also Internet users and had at least secondary education, allowed to diagnose the level of their individual social capital and identify diversifying factors. Primarily, the analysis revealed that greater Internet experience and its more intensive use are linked with a higher level of individual social capital. These factors had more importance than sociodemographic characteristics – age, sex or the level of education.

The article addresses the issue of the social implications of participating in religious groups, with particular emphasis on shaping the type of social capital among members of the mentioned religious groups or any group of a religious nature. It is not sufficiently represented in research work on modern sociology, especially the sociology of religious and modern lives, considering the context of the functioning of a modern man in their interpersonal space. To this end, qualitative research was carried out involving individual case studies. Various qualitative techniques were used: interviews, an analysis of document contents, photographs, biographies, observing participants in their social activities, trust, social ties (among members of the mentioned groups), the social roles of members, the implementation of social functions, participation in the common good, and the values and norms of social coexistence that guide the studied person. These imply the emergence of negative social capital, closing social capital, amoral familism and strong bonds in the norms developed by the group to which the analysed case belongs.

This paper attempts to provide a picture of network effect on cultural participation by building on theoretical concepts of social capital and social networks as well as on original data collected by the author on 362 inhabitants ofWrocław. The central discussion of the study concerns the relative explanatory power of network variables (such as intensity of contacts with friends and acquaintances, or access to resources via social ties) in predicting the reported consumption tastes, practices or knowledge, net of structural factors. The findings support the hypothesis that more networked persons (particularly those having many non-kin contacts) are more likely to participate in a greater number of cultural activities and to be more “omnivorous” consumers. The article concludes with some possible directions of future research.

Social capital is widely seen as an important factor behind economic development. It facilitates ties between businesses and reduces transaction costs. It also creates an innovation-friendly environment. But research reports also list some negative aspects of social capital, such as the creation of divisions within society and the uncontrolled emergence of various self-interest groups, and, in extreme cases, mafia-type organizations. Another problem is that the very concept of social capital has not been clearly defined in research reports, according to the author. Lissowska sets out to determine if post-socialist countries differ from other economies in the way they use social capital. She starts out by defining social capital as a partially altruistic approach of an individual toward other people. The study is based on data for 23 European countries collected during a European Social Survey in 2006. This body of data makes the author conclude that post-socialist countries have distinct features as far as social capital is concerned, such as a low level of social confidence and a tendency to maintain “close” rather than “remote” social ties. However, other countries such as Portugal, Cyprus and, less markedly, Spain, display similar features, Lissowska notes. These features may result from these countries’ totalitarian past when social ties were more difficult to establish and maintain than today. They also stem from historic cultural factors such as insufficiently developed civil-society traditions in some of these countries, poor quality of government and law enforcement, religious traditions and new social trends such as people’s drive to succeed economically.

Trust and willingness to cooperate depend on the structure of one’s social network and the resources one can access through it. In this study, based on a survey dataset of a representative sample of the Polish population (n = 1000) we create an empirical ‘map’ of four distinct dimensions of social capital: degree (number of social ties), centrality in the social network, bridging social capital (ties with dissimilar others), and bonding social capital (ties with similar others, primarily with kin). We investigate the links between social capital and its key correlates: generalized and particularized trust and willingness to cooperate. We find that centrality (or occupying the position of a network bridge) is positively related to trust, whereas for bonding social capital this relation is negative. We find also a puzzling effect of cooperation without trust in the case of individuals with high bridging social capital resources (ties with dissimilar others).

As spatial diversity of economic development is one of the main problems of modern economies, researchers have attempted to define the conditions and factors influencing this phenomenon. Among others, two intangible factors are suggested: human capital and social capital (Herbst ed. 2007). The primary objective of this work is a spatial and spatio-temporal analysis of the diversification of human and social capital within the Polish NUTS 3 subregions. The two detailed targets are constructing composite indicator of both of the mentioned types of capital as well as examining spatial interactions between human capital, social capital and the GNP level per capita. The large diversification of human and social capital in the Polish subregions has been confirmed. Clusters of regions with low levels of human capital have been indicated, whereas in the case of social capital a grouping of its high values was observed. The research also confirmed the positive correlation between GNP per capita and human capital, with high values of both variables in the larget cities. Additionally, there are some subregions with high levels of economic development surrounded by low levels of human and social capital (Łódź, Szczecin, Wrocław). It is possible that high level of GNPpc in these regions was the incentive causing the relocation of human capital from the neighbouring regions. The correlation between GNPpc and social capital, where significant, is of the low-high type. These subregions are located in the east and south of Poland.

In this paper, we investigate how the social and human capital of entrepreneurial team members influences their ability to identify entrepreneurial opportunities and mobilize external resources. We extend prior research in two ways. First, by using the ordered probit method to measure the identified entrepreneurial opportunities number at the level of entrepreneurial teams. Second, to our knowledge, there is a very small number of studies that have theoretically and empirically investigated the mobilization of external resources, especially at the level of entrepreneurial teams.

This text is an attempt to reconstruct how emigrants from Poland adapted to the living conditions in Scottish society after Poland acceded to the European Union. Using the functional perspective, four potential forms of migrant adaptation were defined according to their relations with the social system of the host country. Assimilation, integration, marginalisation, and isolation were distinguished as four essential types occurring with different intensities and frequencies. The adaptation of migrants to new living conditions was analysed using these forms concerning the following three critical dimensions of human existence: the material, the cultural, and the social. It makes it possible to show the diversity of the adaptation strategies according to gender and the problem of working in jobs below one’s skill level. On the other hand, the analysis of the cultural and social dimensions made it possible to identify issues related to the accumulation of family social capital and difficulties in transferring cultural capital between the two countries. The survey also showed that Polish migrants have a high integration potential. However, situations where unfavourable or negative experiences of migrants intensify, may constitute a fundamental basis for developing an adaptation strategy that will result in the marginalisation of this group.

The analysis was performed using data from the 2008/2016 European Social Survey, taking into consideration additional sociodemographic variables. The results revealed a lack of correlation between the associational activity and the support for the welfare state, and a relatively coherent pattern of impact of the control variables on associational activity.

The aim of this paper is to assess the importance of class differences in contemporary Poland by studying the effect of social position and mobility on the commensal practices. For this purpose, the author applies Pierre Bourdieu’s multidimensional class model and argues that class effect may be disaggregated into three components: cultural, economic and social capital. Using data from a survey conducted in 2017, he finds support for three hypotheses. First, commensality is more typical for people with higher endowments of economic and cultural capital, but is not related to educational mobility/immobility. Second, commensality is correlated with social capital and social networks and thus potentially conducive to social advantages. Third, commensality goes together with culinary openness and cosmopolitan taste that foster it. Contrary to the thesis of class dissolution, class differences are still operative in contemporary societies.

It is obvious that two different places symbolize two different levels of reality. Are they complementary or contradictory? Are the friends of this real world equal to Facebook friends? Can we consider school friendship the same as the friendship accepted, and removed, by a simple click? The author tries to pinpoint the hidden mechanisms through which the virtual reality is actualized. By the social relational ontology, it’s possible to understand better and deeper the link between social capital of the young students and the continuum passage from on-line to off-line friendship.

Podejście ilościowe, matematyczne, statystyczne i inne paradygmaty nauk technicznych i ekonomicznych stają się niewystarczające do wyjaśnienia wszystkich zależności w procesach ekonomicznych i społecznych.
The current market conditions have led to the situation in which companies operate in an environment in which having a certificate of a quality management system is insufficient to ensure and guarantee customers’ satisfaction on the one hand, and effectiveness and efficiency of the implemented pro-quality system on the other. Among the reasons for this situation the issue connected with the human factor must be emphasized. Therefore the paper deals with the topic related to the importance of social capital in quality management, with a special focus on the improvement of QMS (Quality Management Systems). This subject is important because of the evolution of quality management: from the approach based on inspection to the approach based on total quality management (TQM). Therefore the importance of factors such as employee engagement, trust, teamwork, has increased.

Opis:
Objective - Due to the increasing share of Ukrainians in the Polish labor market, an analysis concerning the evaluation of trust levels exhibited by Polish and Ukrainian employees of Polish organizations was conducted. The assessment serves to merely outline the issue. Further studies on a more representative sample ought to be continued.Approach - The paper is based upon the review of literature regarding the scope of social capital and results of a pilot study conducted with the use of a questionnaire. The pilot encompassed 84 respondents. The questionnaire was developed on the basis of tools applied by other authors. The study encompassed Polish and Ukrainian employees due to the increasing share of the latter in the Polish labor market. Results - Results indicate that the employees, regardless of their nationality, manifest a rather high trust level. Respondents of both nationalities believe that their colleagues are friendly and eagerly share knowledge. The results indicate that they are aware of their duties and need not be controlled and overseen. However, they openly admit that their organizations do not shy from gossip and criticism, which begs for more scrutiny.Limitations/ research implications - The limitation of the present paper can be seen in the non-representative character of the sample. Moreover, it would be beneficial to expand the questionnaire in order to gain more insight into the issue.Originality/ value - Despite the limitations, the results are interesting due to the increasing number of Ukrainian employees in Polish organizations.

Opis:
The paper focuses on searching for relationships and conditions of the seniors’ status in Slovakia in the context of transformation processes that had significantly weakened their social securities, their meaning of the life and had them shifted into “surviving“. The solution seems to be intergenerational solidarity, using their social capital as a part of own life experiences’ capitalisation process. The standard of living in the EU, achieved health and social standards including the rights to a dignified and full-fledged seniors’ life, are one of basic human rights and its observance should be a legal and moral duty of every democratic country. The authors offer the results of empirical research on the quality of seniors’ life in conditions of Slovak conditions in comparison with the Pan-European area.

Opis:
The social capital of an organization is one of the key success factors of enterprises that build their competitive position in the market. This resource, obtained from social structures, can also be used to achieve goals set for public sector organizations, such as universities. Universities operate in conditions of high uncertainty, changing roles, and expectations of stakeholders, which requires adaptability and flexibility of operation. In addition to improving the quality of research and teaching, one of the important evaluation criteria is also the ability to transfer knowledge to the economy and commercialization of research. One of the activities undertaken by universities to support employees in ongoing changes is the implementation of academic scouting, introducing departmental innovation brokers who play the role of coaches/mentors, supporting research and teaching staff by commercializing their research results. The aim of the article is to show how the social capital of departmental innovation brokers supports the development of competences of scientific and research scholars. Based on the conducted qualitative research, it was presented how brokers use their social capital to achieve multidimensional goals in relation to other people, as well as organizational goals resulting from the entrusted function. Factors hindering the cooperation of departmental innovation brokers with academics, which are manifested in various areas of social capital – structural, cognitive, and relational – were analyzed.
