This article presents a pilot study report on a sample of 21 high-school students from Krakow. The aim of the study is a preliminary determination of the way in which respondents perceive and use domestic space. A feeling of the home as important space, both common and indivisible, predominated amongst the surveyed students. Almost all respondents single out a fragment of domestic space as “their property” (their rooms, furniture - beds, desks, shelves); furthermore, they divide the space at home into that which is more important and less important. The differences in the results obtained between an only child and children from large families are more quantitative than qualitative.

This article is a report form a study conducted among the students of two universities in Cracow. The objective of the research was to examine whether the students observe elements defined by M. Billing as "banal nationalism" in their everyday space. The author of this paper builds upon a brief analysis of space as an object of interest for sociologists and anthropologists (G. Simmel, E. T. Hall, Yi-Fu Tuan, T. Edensor, M. Augé), showing a dual continuum of the social experience of space, extending from home to not-place. An analysis of answers collected during the research allows to affirm that around 30% of the 100-person group under study distinguishes elements of what is national in their everyday space. Among the subsets of this space mentioned by the respondents, attire was brought up most frequently; next came: dishes and customs related to food consumption, means of transport, youth music, architecture and nature.

The sea is certainly not one of the favourite research topics of sociology and despite a recent and new popularity among historians and geographers, the sea remains generally a stranger to contemporary sociologists. Conversely, I think that to frame and shed light on the wider theoretical implications of maritime sociology would be beneficial to all possible approaches within sociological research. In this article I intend to give my contribution to the fulfillment of the expectation of above by discussing the ways sociology can understand the sea as a truly social space, beyond any abstract dichotomies separating “grounded” societies and offshore voids. Also, I try to suggest some concrete moves to relocate maritime sociology within the wider sociological debate and to develop the heuristic potential of the sea.

The social space generated for the political power is functional as the place of government and official residence of governing people. It is also symbolic because it expresses the prestige of power and the accepted ideology. The official buildings are the appropriated means to deploy the image of power. The paper presents some official buildings in Lomé, capital of Togo, and analyses their symbolic signification. As first example, it is the Governor Palace, huge, nice building constructed at the beginning of 20th century, used were changed their significance over time. As a second example service buildings constructed at the Place of Independence around the Monument of Independence. The author argues the recent history expressed through official buildings shows that it is difficult to construct the imagery of hopeful future in Togo because there are no clear and solid „lieux de memoire" that can serve as roots.

The essay critically approaches the current state and directions of changes in the university education. We see the critical point in the unconditioned endorsement by the university of the market values of intense competitiveness of global economy and the cult of the pro-market education which is its inevitable result. We would like to argue that although the university must respect economic conditions and limitations, nevertheless we fear that the ongoing process of corporatization of the university with its management strategies such as cutting costs, scanning environments for competitive purposes, re-engineering highly competitive efficiency criteria for the staff will bring about a neglect of the humanist values rooted in intellectual and social sensibility and hence undermine the social mission of the university which, apart from professional skills and research, must cultivate intellectual pluralism by providing space for intelligent conversation, sharing critical views of the present state of things thus fostering social criticism and the spirit of responsible dissent.

In this essay I will analyse selected aspects of the process of arranging traditional space in the face of the challenges of modernity. Progressive globalisation, cultural changes, social transformations-all these processes have influenced the ways local communities manage their territory. I will mainly deal with the phenomenon of reterritorialisation, focus on how identification with territory is reinforced in local communities. I will show how cultural legacy, characteristic of a given region, shapes particular versions of locality and globalisation.The role of ethnicity in these processes is of special interest. Is ethnic identification still taken into account in social strategies embedded in the processes of globalisation? In the first part I argue that modernity introduces irreversible changes to the character of existing and ethnically defined space. The second part includes arguments supporting the thesis about the necessity of adjusting to modern strategies of region management, which must entail partially giving up territorial identity protection. In spite of this, in the process of ethnic construction of a region, space seems to constitute a social framework which determines points of reference for collective action and conceptualisation of new reality

W niniejszej pracy jako główny przedmiot badań została wybrana przestrzeń społeczna zabudowań mieszkaniowych doliny Gruvedalen w Longyearbyen na terenie wyspy Spitsbergen w archipelagu Svalbard. Jest to przykład przestrzeni społecznej nietypowej dla europejskich warunków. Jest ona bowiem zlokalizowana na terenie o ekstremalnie zimnym klimacie. Analizując architekturę i urbanistykę Spitsbergenu, a także jego mieszkańców, zwrócono uwagę na rolę i znaczenie przestrzeni społecznych w życiu mieszkańców, ich ogólną charakterystykę, pozytywy, negatywy, sposób wykorzystywania przez różne grupy społeczne oraz jakość i rozwiązania funkcjonalne. W pracy badawczej zastosowano badania teoretyczne, badania terenowe in situ, autorską relację oraz badania ankietowe. Przestrzenie wspomagają prawidłowe funkcjonowanie środowiska mieszkaniowego, pozwalają na poczucie bezpieczeństwa rezydentów i odwiedzających. Najważniejszym czynnikiem wpływającym na odbiór i kształtowanie przestrzeni społecznych przez mieszkańców północnych krańców świata jest forma architektoniczna, lokalizacja i powiązanie z kontekstem, otoczeniem.
The primary object of this study is the common space of a housing development found in Gruvedalen Valley in Longyearbyen, on the island of Spitsbergen, a part of the Svalbard Archipelago. It is a case of a social space that is atypical of European conditions. It is located in a territory with an extremely cold climate. When analysing the architecture and urban layouts of Spitsbergen, as well as its residents, I noted the role and significance of social spaces in their lives, and provided their general overview, which includes the positives, negatives and manner of use by various social groups, in addition to its quality and functional solutions. The research methods used in the study include: theoretical research, in situ field research, original report, and a survey. Social spaces support the correct functioning of the housing environment and enhance the sense of safety among residents and visitors. The most crucial factors that affects the reception and design of social spaces by residents are: architectural form, its location and linkages with the context and surroundings.

W artykule podjęta została próba przedstawienia istoty i specyfiki przestrzeni socjalnej. Po omówieniu niejednoznaczności i symultaniczności przestrzeni oraz sposobu rozumienia przestrzeni społecznej, przedstawione zostały problemy związane z interpretacją pojęcia „socjalny” oraz wielość znaczeń przestrzeni socjalnej. Opracowanie kończy się propozycją definicji przestrzeni socjalnej.
The article attempts to present the essence and specificity of the social space. Having considered the ambiguity and simultaneity of the space as well as the ways of comprehending the social space, the author analyzes the issues of the interpretation of the term ‘social welfare’ and the variety of meanings of the social space. The conclusions offer a definition of the social space.

In social practice, use of supervision becomes a natural part of improving the activities of so-cial workers and professional employees. These include some legislative conditions; supervision prac-tice has a sufficient number of accredited supervisors. So far supervision activity was mainly focused on raising the professional competences of employees of social services and to support the work teams in these entities. Experience, however, also point out the necessity to pay increased attention to the burnout of employees in these entities. The social worker’s activity in the discussed area is characterised by the diversity of clients from of view of their personal, social, health problems, as well as their work load and low salary. The problem of burnout syndrome of social workers and professional staff of public policy institutions so far was not paid attention to. No research have not been carried out, which showed this issue. The contribution is focused, in addition of theoretical contexts, to analyse the impact of supervision process at the prevention of burnout among professionals. The paper is intended to analyse the impact of the supervision process on prevention of the burnout syndrome in helping professions. The results presented have come from the research in which 93 supervisors and 260 professionals from institutions of social services took part. The aim of the research was to identify presence of an analysed theme in the process of supervision and find out what preferred ways of solving them are. A part of the research was diagnosing the burnout syn-drome on concerned helping professionals and identifying the impact of supervision on this threat. The quantitative exploratory method was used in the research mentioned. The results have produced some valuable findings: the burnout syndrome is often a primary as well as secondary theme of su-pervision of helping professionals and supervision is an effective tool of the burnout syndrome pre-vention.

Miejsce zamieszkania niewątpliwie jest jednym z najważniejszych ogniw wartości człowieka. Ludzką tożsamość kształtują miejsca, które mają wpływ na powszednie zachowania. W uzasadniony sposób wyznaczają normatywy społeczno-kulturowe. Człowiek przywiązuje się do miejsca zamieszkania, z którym się utożsamia. Dotychczas przestrzeń ta ograniczała się wyłącznie do domu, a wszystko co znajdowało się poza, odbierane było jako coś, co jest obce. Myślenie to dążyło do chaosu i nieładu architektonicznego i urbanistycznego. Dzisiejsze myślenie w kategorii architektury jutra łamie stereotypy myśli przestrzeni urbanistycznej i wprowadza nowe relacje pomiędzy przestrzenią mieszkalną a otoczeniem. Brak spójności urbanistycznej oraz oderwanie od uwarunkowań socjalnych i kulturowych z pewnością wpływa na jakość życia, bezpieczeństwo oraz nawiązywanie kontaktów społecznych. Współczesne uwarunkowania, styl życia oraz względy ekonomiczne motywują do podjęcia działań reaktywacji przestrzeni społecznej w taki sposób, aby społeczeństwo czuło się bezpiecznie i komfortowo.
Undoubtedly, a place of residence is one of the most important links in the system of human values. Man's identity is shaped by places which influence everyday behaviours. In a justified manner, they determine social and cultural norms. Man becomes emotionally attached to the place of residence he identifies with. So far, this space has been restricted to a house, while everything beyond was perceived as a foreign body. Such away of reasoning led to architectural and urban chaos and disorder. Thinking in the category of tomorrow's architecture breaks the stereotypes of urban space and introduces new relations between a place of residence and its surroundings. Certainly, a lack of urban cohesiveness as well as detachment from social and cultural conditions have an impact on the quality of life, safety and interpersonal contacts. The contemporary circumstances, life styles and economic reasons motivate us to reactivate social spaces so that the society would feel safe and comfortable.

Internet, zwłaszcza w wersji Web 2.0, w szczególny sposób poszerzył przestrzeń społeczną. Dla badacza zmian społecznych interesujące jest dorastanie społeczeństwa do nowych przestrzeni społecznych, bardziej niż asymilacja już ukształtowanej społecznie, dojrzałej części społeczeństwa. W tym zakresie dokonano analizy raportów z badań głównych instytucji sondażowych w Polsce i przeprowadzono badania własne w regionie Zagłębia Dąbrowskiego, którego populacja wynosi ok. 500 tys. mieszkańców. W badaniach własnych zwrócono szczególną uwagę na edukacyjne znaczenie Internetu dla pokolenia nastolatków. Wyniki badań własnych są zbieżne w znakomitej większości z tymi publikowanymi w raportach CBOS i OBOP, ale charakteryzują się większą dokładnością w kwestii edukacyjnych zastosowań Internetu.
The Internet, particularly Web 2.0 version, extended a social space in a special manner. From a perspective of a researcher, what is interesting is growingup of a society to new social spaces rather than assimilation of socially wellformed and mature part of this society. In this scope, the analysis of public opinion research reports of leading opinion poll institutions in Poland was conducted, together with one’s own research studies carried out in Zagłębie Dąbrowskie Area with the population of about 500,000 inhabitants. In latter studies special attention was focused on educational significance of the Internet for a generation of teenagers. The findings of one’s own research studies are considerably convergent with those ones published in reports of CBOS and OBOP opinion poll institutes, however, they are characterized by greater precision in terms of educational applications of the Internet.

W artykule przedstawiono sposób zagospodarowania przestrzeni społecznych za pomocą wody. Sięgnięto do przykładów wykorzystania wody począwszy od starożytności. Grupą społeczną, która kształtuje się sezonowo, jest grupa turystów, gości hotelowych, ludzi zamieszkujących czasowo określoną przestrzeń. Współcześnie można zaobserwować tęsknotę za naturą, chęć sprawdzenia się w warunkach bardziej dzikich niż te, w których żyjemy, pragnienie oderwania się na chwilę od zgiełku cywilizacji. Naprzeciw tym oczekiwaniom wychodzi forma rekreacji w postaci robinsonad. Pojawiają się one coraz częściej na wybrzeżu Adriatyku - szczególnie na chorwackich wyspach. W artykule omówiono rekreacyjne przestrzenie społeczne robinsonad - przestrzenie kształtowane wodą.
This article presents a manner of developing social spaces by means of water. It includes examples of using water since antiquity. A social group which forms seasonally is a group of tourists, hotel guests, people spending their holidays in a defined space. Contemporarily, we can observe longing for Nature, willingness to prove oneself under wilder conditions than those we live in, a wish to get away from the turmoil of civilization for a while. A form of recreation called robinsonade meets these expectations. More and more frequently, it appears on the Adriatic coast, especially on the Croatian islands. This paper describes recreational social spaces of robinsonades - spaces shaped by water.

The establishment and maintenance of neighbourly ties has been a challenge for sociologists and urban planners for years. The separation of public spaces from private ones and the clear demarcation of their borders is an important element of the residents’ functioning relative to one another in their housing environment. Residential areas, such as the Viennese Mote Laa or the Gdańsk district of Garnizon are examples which show the significant role of greenery in the shaping of neighbourly spaces and the activation of local social contacts – which are often initiated by said greenery. This article is meant to illustrate the involvement of greenery in the creation and segregation of space, as it can become a natural barrier delineating given zones, make the actions of residents more dynamic, influencing the formation of neighbourly ties and ensure a better wellbeing of its users.

Wraz z ideą rozwoju zrównoważonego, rośnie zainteresowanie jakością życia ludzi w ich środowisku zamieszkania. Z szacunku dla otoczenia, dla środowiska naturalnego oraz dla użytkownika danych przestrzeni, które stanowią osiedla, czy zespoły mieszkaniowe, funkcjonują już idee uwolnienia ich od ruchu samochodowego. Pojawiają się więc bezpieczne, pozbawione spalin i hałasu mieszkalne wnętrza urbanistyczne, zazielenione i wyposażone w różnego rodzaju atrakcyjne funkcjonalnie i estetycznie urządzenia. Wnętrza takie są w założeniu przyjazne dla użytkujących je grup społecznych. Wydawać by się mogło, że powinny być wręcz oblężone przez ludzi, gwarne i wesołe. Czy tak jest? Artykuł jest próbą odpowiedzi na pytanie czy osiedla bez samochodu są trafioną odpowiedzią na potrzeby współczesnych mieszkańców?
Together with the concept of sustainable development, the interest in the quality of life of people in their residence environment has been growing. Out of respect for the surrounding areas, for the natural environment and for users of specific spaces which are housing estates or residential complexes, there have emerged concepts of relieving them of car traffic. Thus there appear safe residential urban interiors, deprived of exhaust fumes and noise, green and equipped with all sorts of attractive, functional and aesthetic appliances. Such interiors are in principle friendly for the social groups using them. It would seem that they should be literally besieged by people, bustling and joyful. Are they? This article is an attempt to address the question whether housing estates without cars are a good answer to the needs of their contemporary residents.
