The article discusses various attitudes towards foreigners that can be perceived in ancient Egyptian material. It is argued that there was no single and unchangeable attitude towards foreigners throughout ancient Egyptian history, but instead that Egyptian attitudes to foreigners changed over time due to various historical and social factors. It is also argued that these attitudes reflected a constant negotiation between the traditional and stereotypical perception of foreigners as enemies of the Egyptian state and more nuanced approaches in which foreigners could have a number of roles to play in Egyptian society, which often led to significant transformations of Egyptians’ self-identity. Therefore, the traditional image of ancient Egypt as a highly xenophobic culture is called into question.

The formation of a person's identity is a continuous and dynamic process, occurring at every stage of our lives, although the most important and crucial period is adolescence, especially its second phase falling between the ages of 16/17-20. In the light of contemporary research, we know that identity is not a fixed construct, but is subject to dynamic transformations not only during adolescence, but also at subsequent stages of adulthood (Brzezińska & Piotrowski, 2017). Identity formation is subject to various influences, one of which is the use of social media. Therefore an extremely important research task should be the searching for links between young people's identity statuses and their activity on social networks. We know that today's young people use social networks to explore themselves, but also to express themselves. The researchers who undertook this issue were Mannerström et al. (2018). Their studies concerned the dependencies between social media use and identity statuses. There is still not enough empirical research focusing on exploring the relationship between adolescents' engagement in digital activity and their identity formation process. This article presents the results of research into understanding this relationship. In this study was applied a diagnostic survey method. The research consisted of anonymous paper-and-pencil surveys. The study was designed to answer the question of how the identity statuses of the studied adolescents are linked to their excessive use of social media portals. The results confirmed that adolescents who have ruminative exploration identity statuses use social media portals statistically significantly more excessively (harmfully) than students presenting other identity statuses.

This study aims to show how the principle of otherness emerges in the discourse of the national written press in France. We  consider that in the media, the Other is Poland, whose social meaning, stored in the collective memory, embraces the extremely negative traits of difference and threat. The judgment of otherness relates to four components of this meaning. Firstly, Poland is perceived as an object whose location is indefinite and undecided. Secondly, it is strange due to its excessive, aggressive and dangerous Catholicism. Thirdly, it harms France and the common European project. Finally, it constitutes an economic threat.

Wpisując się w zwrot kulturowy w analizach klas społecznych, artykuł koncentruje się na biograficznym doświadczaniu międzypokoleniowego awansu klasowego. Opierając się na analizie 30 wywiadów biograficzno-narracyjnych z osobami, które pochodzą z klas ludowych, a obecnie są akademikami/akademiczkami, artystami/artystkami, menadżerami/menadżerkami biznesu, tekst poszukuje odpowiedzi na pytanie o to, jak obiektywny awans klasowy jest subiektywnie postrzegany przez osoby, którego doświadczyły. Zaprezentowane i omówione są tutaj dwa rodzaje narracji o awansie: problematyzująca (kiedy awans staje się przedmiotem pogłębionej pracy biograficznej) oraz normalizująca (kiedy awans nie stanowi kluczowego wątku w opowieści). Prezentacja wybranych przypadków biograficznych pozwala na wyodrębnienie elementów, które mogą wpływać na stopień obecności mobilności klasowej w narracjach.
Aligned with the cultural turn in social class analysis, this article explores the biographical experiences associated with intergenerational upward mobility. Based on the analysis of 30 biographical-narrative interviews with individuals who transitioned from working-class backgrounds to positions as academics, artists, or business managers, the study aims to address how those who underwent objective class mobility subjectively perceive the process. The article presents and discusses two distinct types of narratives on mobility: problematizing narratives (wherein mobility becomes the central focus of in-depth biographical exploration), and normalizing narratives (where mobility does not constitute a prominent thread in the narrative). The presentation of selected biographical cases facilitates the identification of elements that can influence the extent to which class mobility is manifested in the narratives.

This article proposes to present the issue of insularity in the archipelago of Cape Verde, an African country marked by several centuries of Portuguese colonization, with particular emphasis on the analysis of the interrelation between socio-historical factors and linguistic phenomena that occurred in this insular country. Taking into consideration this context, we will draw attention to the importance of insularity in the process of miscegenation of the populations in the colonial era, to the process of the formation of Creole as a result of multilingual contacts, as well as to the long process of the construction of the social identity of Cape Verdeans in the history of this society.

The war initiated by the Russian Federation against Ukraine in 2022 can be seen as a drastic shock event with unpredictable long-term socio-political consequences at the national, regional and global levels. This study aims to identify the impact of war-related disturbances on the dynamics of social cleavages in Ukraine, in particular the possibility of deepening or diminishing such cleavages or promoting the occurrence of new ones. For decades, the internal partition of Ukraine into East and West has been attributed to national self-identification, linguistic and religious peculiarities and the geopolitical preferences of residents of different regions. Shortly before and after the outbreak of the Russian invasion, fundamental changes in Ukrainian society and domestic politics became evident, some of which can be interpreted as signs of the mitigation of social cleavages. Our findings revealed at least two significant shifts in these ‘old’, traditional cleavages: one occurred after the Revolution of Dignity and the annexation of Crimea by Russia in 2014, and the second one is emerging now, due to the full-scale war on Ukrainian territory against the Ukrainian people. More broadly, this research aims to assess the resilience of social cleavages in the face of a shock event.

Opis:
Families formed by parents with different ethnic backgrounds are a growing group around the world. This article examines the influence of parenthood on the awareness of ethnic identity among parents of mixed-background children in Estonia. Information was collected through semi-structured interviews conducted separately among mothers and fathers. The results show that parenthood is a life event that influences the awareness of ethnic identity in this group of parents. Reflecting on the child’s future activates parents’ ethnic identity processing. Thinking about ethnic identity includes psychological, but also more practical and tangible arguments related to their and their children’s life. The parents’ increased interest in issues of ethnic identity was often related to their children’s prospects. The findings suggest that parents’ ethnic identity is influenced by one or more of the following mechanisms related to children’s prospects: raised awareness, enhanced communication, and the development of a multi-ethnic identity. To our knowledge, this is one of the first studies on parenthood and ethnic identity among parents of children with mixed ancestry in Estonia.
Rodziny tworzone przez rodziców o różnym pochodzeniu etnicznym stanowią coraz liczniejszą grupę na całym świecie. Niniejszy artykuł analizuje wpływ rodzicielstwa na świadomość tożsamości etnicznej wśród rodziców dzieci o mieszanym pochodzeniu etnicznym w Estonii. Dane do badań zostały zebrane za pomocą wywiadów częściowo ustrukturyzowanych, przeprowadzonych osobno wśród matek i ojców. Wyniki badań pokazują, że rodzicielstwo jest wydarzeniem życiowym, które wpływa na świadomość tożsamości etnicznej w tej grupie rodziców. Rozważania dotyczące przyszłości dziecka aktywizują u rodziców refleksję nad tożsamością etniczną. Reflektowanie nad tożsamością etniczną obejmuje zarówno argumenty psychologiczne, jak i bardziej praktyczne i namacalne, związane z życiem rodziców i ich dzieci. Rosnące zainteresowanie rodziców tożsamością etniczną wynika często właśnie z namysłu nad perspektywami, jakie otwierają się przed ich dziećmi. Wyniki badań wskazują, że na tożsamość etniczną rodziców wpływa jeden lub więcej z następujących mechanizmów powiązanych z perspektywami rozwojowymi ich dzieci: podniesienie świadomości, wzmocnienie komunikacji oraz rozwój tożsamości wieloetnicznej. Według naszej wiedzy, jest to jedno z pierwszych badań dotyczących kwestii rodzicielstwa i tożsamości etnicznej, jakie zostały przeprowadzone w Estonii wśród rodziców dzieci o mieszanym pochodzeniu etnicznym.

Aktywność społeczna, rozumiana jako podejmowanie działań na rzecz społeczności lokalnej, związana jest z identyfikowaniem się z daną miejscowością. Im wyższy stopień identyfikacji, tym większa skłonność jednostki do podejmowania działań na rzecz własnej społeczności lokalnej. W artykule podjęto te zagadnienia w kontekście procesów edukacji mieszkańców i turystów, która wpływa na procesy tworzenia kapitału społecznego. Działania podejmowane na rzecz aktywizowania społeczności lokalnych szczególną rolę odgrywają na terenach wiejskich, gdzie zauważa się większe niż w miastach łączenie swojego losu z konkretną społecznością. Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie roli aktywizacji społecznej w edukacji mieszkańców i turystów na przykładzie projektu „Cichy Memoriał” realizowanego w regionie Bieszczad. Główny problem badawczy zawiera pytanie o to, czy projekt wpłynął na stan wiedzy o regionie (kulturze, historii i społeczeństwie) oraz czy udział w projekcie miał wpływ na postawy i umiejętności w zakresie kształtowania kapitału społecznego dwóch grup odbiorców: mieszkańców i turystów. W badaniu zastosowano metodę jakościową zbierania danych, w dwóch częściach. W pierwszej wykorzystano wywiad telefoniczny z twórcą projektu i jego uczestnikami, w drugiej – dokonano przeglądu wpisów na profilu społecznościowym autora projektu (Facebook), gdzie obserwatorzy umieszczali swoje opinie. Wyniki badań wskazały na edukacyjną rolę projektu „Cichy Memoriał” zarówno w odniesieniu do mieszkańców, jak i do turystów w trzech wymiarach: wiedzy, umiejętności i postaw. Projekt ten jest odpowiedzią na wyzwania globalizacji, które bezpośrednio przekładają się na zadania dla edukacji, a głównym problemem staje się przystosowanie ludności do wzrastającej zmienności oraz niepewności. Istotnym elementem pojmowanym w kategoriach szansy generowanej przez procesy globalizacji staje się kultura. Dzięki niej społeczność lokalna ma możliwość wyrażania swojej tożsamości, a poprzez aktywizację wskazaną w badanym projekcie pojawia się efekt edukowania nie tylko mieszkańców, ale i turystów odwiedzających region.
Social activity, understood as action taken for the benefit of the local community, is linked to identification with a locality. The stronger the degree of identification, the greater the individual’s willingness to take action for the benefit of their local community. This paper discusses these dynamics within the context of resident and tourist education, which influences the processes of social capital formation. Actions taken to activate local communities play a particularly crucial role in rural areas, as here, individuals’ destinies are more tied to their specific communities than in cities. This study aims to explore the role of social activation in the education of both residents and tourists, with particular emphasis on the educational role of activities related to the preservation of local culture. This is demonstrated through the example of the “Cichy Memorial” project implemented in the Bieszczady region of Poland. The main research question concerns whether the project enhanced the understanding of the region’s culture, history, and society, and whether participation in the project impacted attitudes and skills relevant to shaping social capital in two groups of recipients: residents and tourists. The research employed a two-part qualitative method of data collection. The first part involved conducting telephone interviews with the project developer and participants, while the second part involved a review of posts on the project developer’s social media (Facebook) profile, where observers had posted their opinions. The findings of the research underscored the educational role of the Silent Memorial project for both residents and tourists across three dimensions: knowledge, skills, and attitudes. The project addresses the challenges of globalisation, which directly translate into tasks for education, with the primary issue being the population’s adaptation to increasing volatility and uncertainty. Culture is becoming an important element understood in terms of the opportunities generated by the globalisation processes. Through this cultural focus, the local community has the opportunity to express its identity, and through the activation indicated in the project under study, there is an effect of educating not only the local inhabitants but also the tourists visiting the region.

Opis:
The theme of the “stranger” in the Bible will be approached from the point of view of the relationship between an indigenous group and the “otherness” represented by those who sojourn in a foreign land. The words that the Hebrew language uses for “stranger” testifies to a nuanced perception of this overall category and also a nuanced attitude toward different kinds of “strangers.” The methodology applied is the Social Identity Approach, that focuses on intergroup relationship, and, the concept of Proximate Other. Among the “others,” the biblical Laws’ corpora give particular attention to gēr. The gēr is “other,” but he/she dwells within the Israelite in-group and shares with it his/her everyday life. Nine rules add a motive clause which refers to the experiential background of Jacob’s clan in Egypt. Four of these motive clauses refer to Israelites as gērim and come at the end of rules about only the gēr in Israel’s land. The theological background is expressed in Lev 25:23, which uses the word gērim for the relationship between God and his people. The proposal of the Bible is to bring near the “stranger,” so that the “stranger” is not more an “extraneous.”

The subject matter discussed in the article comprises the issues related to social relations, in particular with making life choices by young adults: the decisions related to the choice of friends, the choice of a life partner or a consent to the marriage of the child with a person of a different religion or nationality. The research with the use of the survey method was conducted among students from the Czech Republic, Poland and Slovakia, living in culturally diverse areas. The surveyed students show an open attitude towards Others in terms of religion. The results of the study confirmed the earlier tendency to choose close acquaintances and friends, regardless of their religious denomination. Students are a little less willing to choose a life partner and are aware of the difficulties encountered by mixed marriages.

Today, ethnic minorities have entered the second wave of emancipation. They are fighting for the right to cultural autonomy, the right to have their own past, history and social memory. The aim of the article is to learn how ethnic minorities “recover” lost social memory in the area of childhood memory and how they work to create ethnic identity again. The text is composed of four parts. The first presents selected aspects of childhood culture. The second is presents Pierre Nora’s concept of memory. The third is presents the results of research on selected ethnic literary texts (Kashubian and Silesian). The author’s conducted semantic and structural analyzes (in the approach of Roland Barthes and Paul Ricoeur). The analyzes allowed us to recognize ethnic childhood as a space of existential suffering and a time of loss of ethnic identity. The answer – in childhood and adulthood – are specific identity strategies. they are aids in constructing a new ethnic identity. The fourth part is Summary and reflection closing the text.

Artykuł traktuje o kwestiach związanych z partycypacją człowieka w cyberprzestrzeni w kontekście zagadnienia tożsamości osobowej oraz wyzwań związanych z technologicznym zapośredniczeniem komunikacji. Horyzont badawczy wyznacza przy tym zagadnienie teatralności życia; akcent położony zostaje na znaczenie autoekspresji i autokreacji oraz wpływu otoczenia społecznego na jednostkę. Technologie cyfrowe stworzyły nowe warunki autoprezentacji, umożliwiając jednostkom kształtowanie ich tożsamości w bardziej zdecentralizowany i fragmentaryczny sposób. Omówione zostają takie aspekty cyfrowego uobecnienia, jak: warunki awataryzacji, relacja awatar–użytkownik oraz zapośredniczone środki ekspresji. Artykuł sugeruje, że jednym z głównych wyzwań, przed którymi stoją ludzie w świecie zapośredniczonym cyfrowo, jest utrzymanie spójnego poczucia siebie. Wymaga to przyjęcia bardziej zniuansowanych i wieloaspektowych ujęć tożsamości osobowej, które uwzględniają uwikłanie jednostki w relacyjność (z samą sobą, z jej awatarami oraz z innymi ludźmi).
Der Artikel befasst sich mit Fragen der Teilnahme des Menschen im Cyberspace im Zusammenhang mit der Frage nach der persönlichen Identität und den Herausforderungen, die sich durch die technologische Vermittlung von Kommunikation ergeben. Der Forschungshorizont wird durch die Frage nach der Theatralität des Lebens bestimmt; der Schwerpunkt liegt auf der Bedeutung des Selbstdarstellung und der Selbstgestaltung sowie auf dem Einfluss des sozialen Umfelds auf das Individuum. Die digitalen Technologien haben neue Bedingungen für die Selbstdarstellung geschaffen, die es dem Einzelnen ermöglichen, seine Identität auf stärker dezentralisierte und fragmentierte Weise zu gestalten. Es werden solche Aspekte der digitalen Präsenz wie die Bedingungen der Avatarisierung, die Avatar-Nutzer-Beziehung und die vermittelten Ausdrucksmittel besprochen. Der Artikel legt nahe, dass eine der größten Herausforderungen für Menschen in einer digital vermittelten Welt darin besteht, ein kohärentes Selbstbewusstsein zu bewahren. Dies erfordert eine Annahme von differenzierteren und facettenreicheren Ansätzen zur persönlichen Identität, die die Verstrickung eines Individuums mit der Relationalität (mit sich selbst, mit ihren Avataren und mit anderen Menschen) mit einbezieht.
The article deals with issues related to human participation in cyberspace in the context of the problem of personal identity and the challenges associated with remote forms of communication. The research perspective is based on the notion of the theatricality of life, in matters such as self-expression and self-creation as well as with regard to social coexistence. Digital technologies gave rise to new opportunities for self-representation, enabling individuals to shape their identities in more decentralized and fragmented ways. The article focuses on aspects of digital presence such as conditions of avatarization, the avatar-user relationship, and digital forms of self-expression. The article suggests that one of the main challenges people face in a digitally mediated world is to maintain a coherent sense of self. It requires embracing a more nuanced and multifaceted understanding of personal identity, which takes into account the individual’s entanglement in relationality (with oneself, with one's avatars, and with other people).

Tożsamość dotyczy z jednej strony sposobu, w jaki jednostka uważa i konstruuje siebie jako członka określonych grup społecznych: narodu, klasy społecznej, poziomu kulturowego, etniczności, płci, zawodu, z drugiej jednak strony – sposobu, w jaki normy tych grup sprawiają, że każda jednostka myśli, zachowuje się, zajmuje pozycję i odnosi się do siebie, do innych, do grupy, do której należy, i do grup zewnętrznych rozumianych, postrzeganych i klasyfikowanych jako inność. Podążając za tezami Michela Foucaulta, Jacques’a Derridy i Julii Kristevej, teoria queer kwestionuje naturalność tożsamości płciowej, tożsamości seksualnej i aktów seksualnych każdej jednostki, twierdząc, że są one w całości lub częściowo skonstruowane społecznie, a zatem jednostek nie można opisać za pomocą ogólnych terminów, takich jak heteroseksualny czy kobieta. Teoria queer podważa więc powszechną praktykę dzielenia opisu osoby tak, by „pasowała” do jednej lub kilku konkretnych, zdefiniowanych kategorii.
Identity concerns, on the one hand, the way in which an individual considers and constructs himself or herself as a member of specific social groups: nation, social class, cultural level, ethnicity, gender, occupation on the other hand, however, the way in which the norms of these groups make each individual think, behave, position and relate to himself or herself, to others, to the group to which he or she belongs and to external groups understood, perceived and classified as otherness. Following the theses of Michel Foucault, Jacques Derrida and Julia Kristeva, queer theory questions the naturalness of each individual’s gender identity, sexual identity and sexual acts, arguing that they are wholly or partially socially constructed and therefore individuals cannot be described by general terms such as ‚heterosexual’ or ‚female’. Queer theory therefore challenges the common practice of compartmentalising the description of a person so that they ‚fit’ into one or more specific, defined categories.

Stawanie się emerytem jest procesem wielowymiarowym i różnorodnym, którego sens doświadczenia konstruuje tożsamość oraz wpływa na jakość życia ludzi po zakończeniu najdłuższej fazy ich życia – pracy zawodowej. Cel badania to opisanie, czym było dla jednostki przejście na emeryturę w okresie PRL. Materiał empiryczny stanowiło dwanaście pamiętników konkursowych, które są subiektywnym, emocjonalnym i obszernym opisem przeżytego doświadczenia stawania się emerytem w społecznym kontekście rzeczywistości PRL-u. Materiał został poddany kodowaniu, analizie i interpretacji w celu wyłonienia wzorów procesu. Zbiory wspólnych przeżyć zostały zestawione z wynikami badań przeprowadzonych przez Brunona Synaka na próbie 284 młodych emerytów, którzy przeszli na emeryturę średnio sześć lat później niż autorzy pamiętników. Badanie pokazuje wiele znaczeń, subiektywnych osądów, modeli zmiany tożsamości z pracownika w emeryta, które osadzone są w kulturze realizmu socjalistycznego.
Becoming a retiree is a multidimensional and diverse process, the experience of which constructs identity as well as impacts people’s quality of life after ending the longest phase of their life, namely professional work. The aim of the study is to describe what the retirement meant for individuals during the communist period. The empirical material was based on 12 contest memoirs constituting an emotional, subjective, and extensive descriptions of the lived experience of becoming a retiree in the social context of the reality of the Polish People’s Republic. The material was coded, analyzed, and interpreted in order for the process patterns to be reconstructed. The emerging collections of common experiences were juxtaposed with the results of Bruno Synak’s research based on a sample of 284 young retirees who retired on average six years later than the authors of the said diaries. The study shows a wide range of meanings, subjective opinions, and the models identity changes from an employee to a retired person, all of which are embedded in the culture of social realism.

In addition to the positive borderline effect, which is often presented in the literature, this text presents the dilemmas and tragedies of the individual, family and community, taking place on the border of cultures, religions and ethnicities. The methodological basis is the concept of the interpretation of the borderland and multi-range identity, through which I read and describe the fate of Emilia Moszczańska Kosiur Niewęgłowska presented by Grzegorz Dżus in the book “Banderowka”, published in 2020. The narration of the book’s main character allowed for presenting the process of shaping the family, individual and social identity. In this process, in the face of experiencing suspicion, helplessness, fear and humiliation, such questions dominate as: Who am I? Who am I to be? How am I to be? The author draws attention to the problem of the narrator’s internal dialogue, points to its value in the educational and humanistic context. He emphasizes how difficult but important, in the process of shaping identity, is the mediation of three areas of identity and the liberating oneself from the stigma of alienation experienced from all sides.
Obok pozytywnego efektu pogranicza, który jest częściej w literaturze przedmiotu prezentowany, w niniejszym tekście ukazane są dylematy i dramaty jednostki, rodziny i społeczności funkcjonującej na pograniczu kultur etniczno-wyznaniowych. Podstawę metodologiczną stanowi koncepcja interpretacji pogranicza i wielozakresowej tożsamości, poprzez którą odczytuję trajektorię losu Pani Emilii Moszczańskiej Kosiur Niewęgłowskiej przedstawionej przez Grzegorza Dżusa w książce z 2020 roku Banderowka. Narracja bohaterki pozwoliła przedstawić proces kształtowania się tożsamości rodzinnej, jednostkowej i społecznej, w którym dominowały ustawicznie pytania: kim jestem, kim być, jak być, wobec doświadczania podejrzliwości, bezsilności, lęków i upokorzenia. Autor zwraca uwagę na problem dialogu wewnętrznego narratorki, wskazuje na jego wartość w kontekście edukacyjnym i humanistycznym, podkreśla, jak trudna, ale istotna w procesie kształtującej się tożsamości jest mediacja trzech zakresów tożsamości, wyzwalania się ze stygmatu obcości doświadczanego ze wszystkich stron.
