The article analyses the question of man ́s despair. In his book The Sickness Unto Death Kierkegaard discusses despair and looks at it from several angles. In his opinion despair is a crisis of identity, it is a sin, it means turning away from God. Kierkegaard believes there are several levels of despair which follow one another and with each level the sin grows. Kierkegaard ́s assertion is based on the assump- tion that despair is a sin which is just the opposite of faith. The present paper is an attempt to describe Kierkegaard ́s categorisation of human despair in more detail. With respect to difficult crisis of hu- man identity, which still persists, we deem Kierkegaard ́s analysis very topical from the viewpoint of theology as well as from the viewpoint of philosophy.

The article is an attempt to present the personalistic interpretation of the original sin. The subject matter connected with the sin of our Primogenitors is complex and multidimentional, it requires a systematic analysis conducted from different perspectives. Due to several charges leveled against the doctrine of protological sin in late 20th century, new propositions for the interpretation of this issue have emerged. The subject of this analysis is a personalistic approach to the issue presented in three paragraphs: 1) The mystery of human evil (mysterium iniquitatis), 2) A drama of the fall of the first people and 3) A theological analysis of structural elements of the original sin.

Death in Islam is an unavoidable phenomenon, and Muslims believe that after it man goes, depending on his actions on earth, to paradise or to hell. However, the problem of whether paradise and salvation belongs only to Muslims, or whether representatives of other religions can also achieve it, is ambiguous in Muslim theology. For centuries, various trends in Muslim theology and philosophy have expressed different opinions on this issue, based on the Qur’an – the Holy Book of Muslims, and hadiths. Overall, however, the opinion in which salvation is limited only to orthodox Muslims is prevailing. The article discusses the theological foundations of salvation in the Qur’an and the Sunna, opinions of Muslim kalam, or medieval speculative theology, as well as the contemporary position of Muslim modernists and fundamentalists.

Attempts of explaining the Catholic doctrine of original sin in the light of the theory of evolution are important in the interdisciplinary dialogue between theology and natural sciences. Solutions, proposed by theologians, can be divided into three main groups. Initially the dominating concepts justified monogenism (Adam as the only origin of humanity), while taking the neutral position towards natural sciences, and basing on conclusions drawn from the doctrinal teaching of the Church and biblical exegesis (e.g. young K. Rahner, L. Scheffczyk). In the 60s of the twentieth century, there were studies which were open to natural sciences and the evolutionary vision of the world. There were attempts of reconciling polygenism (a primary community instead of an indi-vidual Adam) with the dogma of original sin, while respecting the indivisible source of the origi-nal sin (late K. Rahner, Z. Alszeghy, M. Flick, R. Schwager). Concurrently, there were theologi-cal suggestions which under the influence of interdisciplinary dialogue gave up on monogenism, individual sinner, and any first sinful community (P. Teilhard de Chardin).

The article outlines the main directions of the evangelization of the Church Fathers in the 5th and 6th centuries and the numerous obstacles which they encountered in their pastoral ministry. The spreading of pagan practices, magic and all kinds of superstitions were still visible even among the baptized people. Another problem they had to face, no less difficult to overcome, was a moral dissolution, as well as rampant alcoholism. Hence their sermons so often featured merciful God, ready to forgive every person. They also pointed some ways to deepen one’s faith. Thus they tried to form a Christian society, guided by the spirit of the Gospel in every sphere of life.

The article attempts to prove the validity of Origen’s thesis that two versions of the Lord’s Prayer noted by evangelists Matthew and Luke represents two different prayers. To validate the thesis, the author interprets extracts from the New Testament by using the initiation method. Through this method he demonstrates that catechumens were probably taught the version of the Lord’s Prayer noted by Luke, while the version written by Mark could be destined for those who had been baptised.

Tertullian in his treatise De paenitentia written at the end of the Catholic period of his life, believes that God can forgive the sins of man, and the penance is a prerequisite for this. First, a person can receive God’s mercy by taking repentance before baptism. The effect of this is forgiveness of all sins in the sacrament of baptism. Such a penance is determined by the word paenitentia. After having committed a mortal sin after baptism, Tertullian sees the opportunity to enter once again the path of repentance and receiving forgiveness through public confession and also severe public penance. He leaves so the way leading to the rapprochement to God, which is determined by the word exomologesis.

In theology, a sin is described as mysterium iniquitatis and absolution from it— mysterium salutis or pietatis. In the New Testament a sin is always connected with absolution, “forgiveness,” and sinners are of great concern for Jesus. Nevertheless, modern culture becomes more and more detached from Christian tradition and thus deprives a human being of the spiritual values and makes him become further impoverished. This article provides a synthetic discussion of the reality of a sin—“mystery of illicitness” and also reflects on repentance and reconciliation with God and with one’s own neighbour. The reflections presented in this article are based on the teachings of the contemporary Church and on the Papal teachings especially.

L ’examen des significations des mots dont Luc appelait les pécheurs: ofeletai, anomoi, adikoi, peneroi, acharistoi et encore qu’il utilisait pour définir les péchés: kakia, hamartia, permet de préciser ce que Luc comprenait par péché; c’était un vaste éventail de manquements à Dieu, concernant Dieu lui-même et embrassant les rapports entre les humains. L e vocabulaire, concernant la rémission des péchés, metanoeo, epistrefo et afiemi, prouve que Luc ne considère pas le péché en tant que dette envers Dieu; les péchés ne sauraient être remis qu’à ceux qui regrettent et se convertissent. II en est ainsi pour le baptême (apolouo) et pour la rémission des péchés accomplis après le baptême. La rémission est entière (axaleifo ), ce qui montre une suprême clémence de Dieu éprouvant de la joie à faire du bien aux hommes. Luc apporta au monde hellénique l’idée du péché avec lequel il nous faut compter et, soulignant l’importance des commandements de Dieu, rendit plus lucide la conception sémite du péché. Sa façon de considérer le péché et principalement l’oubli des péchés qu’il professait amenèrent la paix dans la vie quotidienne des fidèles.

Curses are spoken formulas that express a desire to happen something bad in the future to someone or something, with the assurance that it will capture. This conviction or belief is based on faith in the magical power of the word. In the folk life curses are being made when the most important values in the community are injured. Therefore, curses are discussed in relation to the  values that are maintained in a given community, and their  violation determines sin, and depending on the committed sin and weights required curses or punishments. Looking from this social perspective, they represent a measure of values in the society that occurs  as  an  indication  of  distortion  of values,  whether  those  who  suggest  deteriorated values occupy a high or low social status in the community or family. The curse is correcting the distortion, i.e. some satisfying justice, out exclusively on force majeure, and indefinitely. In this regard it emphasizes that the most important values in traditional Macedonian culture were life itself, created progeny, and their family, property and honor. Most evidence of the belief  in  the  power  of  the  curse  by  folk  stories  is the  event  of an  accident  either  cursed person  or  his  family.  Therefore,  curses  also  point  another  very important  value,  which  is highly  appreciated  –  the  natural  course  of  human  life,  birth-marriage-death,  that  value in  ritual  practices  tend  to  emphasize  or  re-establish  if  it  is disturbed,  and  curses  she  tries to unravel.

“Sons of God” is the term applied in the Old Testament to supernatural beings both good and evil. However the general view is that the “sons of God” were the pious descendants of Seth and the daughters of men, the Cainitish offspring. In this article there are strong arguments against it. First of all, the term „sons of God” is never applied in the Old Testament to believers. Secondly, is no proof in the text that the daughters of men were only descendants of the Cainites. Thirdly, if the „sons of God” were simply pious Sethites, it is hard to understand why the offspring should be a special race. Besides, the giants were Nephilim, which means „the fallen ones”. That is why the term „sons of God” must mean supernatural evil beings. These angels married women of the human race (either Cainites or Sethites) and the resulting offspring were the Nephilim. The Nephilim were giants with physical superiority and therefore established themselves as men of renowned for their physical prowess and military might. This race of half human creatures was wiped out by the flood New Testament (Jud 5-6; 2 Pet 2,4 i 1 Pet 3,18-20) hint on Gen 6,1-4. This Scriptures declares that the fallen angels are angels, which sinned and God did not spare them. The fallen angels left their own habitation and mixed with the daughters of men.

In Christian tradition death is seen as a result of original sin. The relationship of sin with death is a serious problem for modern man and also for theology. Death is seen as the inevitable consequence of our finitude. Liberal Protestant theology of the 19th century totally denied a cause and effect relationship between sin and physical death. Later Protestant development (W. Pannenberg, J. Moltmann) recognized that finitude does not always mean mortality. In Catholic theology the problem remains open as a subject of enquiry. Our physical death is the result of original sin: if not necessarily in itself as a biological phenomenon, certainly as human death, which we are aware of and which we experience as aggression against our existence. In Christ we receive the hope of definitive immortality and eternal life, though this can in no way be compared with original immortality, which is still at risk of being lost through sin.

The article discusses the dignity and the vocation of women as seen by Saint Teresa Benedict of the Cross (Edith Stein). When God created of the man and the woman he gave them three tasks: being his image, populating the Earth and having the dominion over it. The woman has a greater gift, which is having custody of people, rather than of fighting. The original sin entered the human nature and weakened it but did not destroy it completely. The woman’s relationship with the man has changed. The woman, unsure of her dignity, strives to gain it by fighting with the man. The deepest desire of the female heart is, however, to love and to belong entirely to the loved one. The nature of women, though hurt by the original sin, can be reborn submitting to God. That does not mean that all women must become nuns but that each of them must become “the servant of the Lord”. The paradigm of it is the Mother of God. Mary is an example of three crucial virtues: obedience, trust, and the common life with the husband. The deepest feminine desire, when the woman can forget about herself and have her heart open to the needs and the suffering of others, can be achieved only in Eucharistic communion with Jesus.

In the short piece by Jan Stanisław Jabłonowski’s Unscrupulous Scruple in Poland the Republic of Poland is presented as a state tainted by particular sinfulness, which may not be easily indicated nor analysed in a moralising manner as it reaches beyond the scope of Catholic examination of conscience. Therefore, the gentry could believe that they lead a sinless life. Proving the belief to be a mere illusion was the last undertaking of the magnate in the last years of his life, which may be perceived as a depiction of the turns of Fortune’s Wheel.
