Opis:
The objective of the present study was to obtain silver core nanoparticles coated with dextran shell. In the described method dextran plays role of reductive and protective agent and also functionalisation ligand. Our research was aimed at nanoparticles synthesis at 37°C. It is the human body temperature, which is safe for temperature-sensitive drugs (proteins). In the presented work the time of reaction, dextran molecular weight and its chemical functionalisation was investigated. Particles were characterized by Nanosight and SEM, their UV–Vis spectroscopic absorption properties were also determined. Nanoparticles with diameter less than 95 nm with relatively narrow size distribution were obtained. Our work demonstrated that it was possible to obtain nanoparticles in 37°C without using any harmful reagents.

Opis:
Biofilms are complex bacterial communities that resist the action of antibiotics and the human immune system. Bacteria within biofilms are the cause of numerous, almost impossible to eradicate, persistent infections. Biofilms can form on many medical devices and implants, and so have an enormous impact on medicine. Due to the lack of effective anti-biofilm antibiotics, novel alternative compounds or strategies are urgently required. This review describes some of the latest approaches in the field of biofilm treatment. New anti-biofilm technologies target different stages in the biofilm formation process. Some act to modify the colonized biomaterials to make them resistant to biofilm formation. One potentially important candidate treatment uses silver nanoparticles that show anti-bacterial and anti-biofilm activity. The biological action of nano-silver is complex and seems to involve a number of pathways. However, there have been few reports on the anti-biofilm activity of silver nanoparticles and the precise mechanism underlying their action remains unresolved. Here, we describe some anti-biofilm approaches employing AgNPs and consider the challenges and problems that need to be addressed in order to make silver nanoparticles a part of an effective anti-biofilm strategy.

Opis:
Silver nanoparticles (NPs) have at least one dimension of a particle smaller than 100 nm and contain 20-15,000 silver atoms. Due to its antibacterial activity nanosilver (NS) is used for medical purposes. NS particles can be obtained by various methods. Potentially, the best method of the NS synthesis for medical purposes is based on a brief flow of electric current between two silver electrodes placed in deionized water. It is accepted that the major antibacterial effect of silver is its partial oxidation and releasing silver ions, which interact with thiol groups of peptidoglicans of bacterial cell wall, and proteins of the cell membrane causing cell lysis. Silver ions can also bind to bacterial DNA preventing its replication and stopping synthesis of bacterial proteins. The rise in exposure to silver NPs has spurred interest into their toxicology. NS undergoes a set of biochemical transformations including accelerated oxidative dissolution in gastric acid, binding to thiol groups of serum and tissue proteins, exchange between thiol groups, sulfides and selenides, binding to selenoproroteins and photoreduction in skin to zerovalent metallic silver. Animal studies have shown that exposure to NS may lead to liver and spleen damage. NS can also stimulate an increased secretion of proinflammatory cytokines by monocytes. As a spectrum of NS applications is still growing, the complex evaluation of a safety of its use becomes an important task. This requires an elucidation of not only the influence of NS on human cells and organism, but also its biotransformation in organism and in environment.

The sol-gel derived silica spheres with surfaces modified by silver nanoparticles were used to enhance the photodynamic effect. The silica nanoparticles were prepared by modified Stöber synthesis. The diameter of obtained silica spheres was ca. 100 nm. These silica spheres we used as a carrier for noble nanoparticles. It was shown that Ag-Au nanoparticles have an antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli. This effect depends on the nanoparticles concentration and it is stronger for higher concentrations. Laser irradiation enhances this effect, and starting from certain concentration it is possible to kill Escherichia coli, totally, when using laser light.

Currently the research on silver nanoparticles is of great demand owing to their antibacterial properties. One of the possibilities is the study of the silver deposition on the cellulose fibers, and more specifically of the silver nanoparticles and cellulose particles. The research was aimed at obtaining silver nanostructures by reducing ions with formaldehyde and then stabilizing them with the Pluronic solution. A suspension system containing cellulose fibers and silver nanoparticles was prepared in the basic electrolyte NaNO3. There were analyzed the following makes: pH of solutions, grain distribution and zeta potential ζ. Ag nanoparticles are largely applied in medicine, pharmacy, cosmetology and textile industry. Great interest in the nanostructures allows for developing knowledge about them, and thus creating the possibility of further improvement of their properties for subsequent applications.

Opis:
Nano-biotechnology represents the intersection of nanotechnology and biotechnology which is an emerging field in creation, productivity and utility of nanoscale structures for advanced biotechnology. Plant and plant extract are considered as green and effective paths in the synthesis of gold and silver nanoparticles. The aim of the present study is to analyze the interaction of silver nanoparticles synthesized from herbal source (Cinnamon zeylanicum) with pathogenic bacteria Salmonella typhi (S. typhi) in order to know the microbe pathogenicity. The micro-nano interface disturbed the growth of microbes. Under the influence of different concentration of nanoparticles (50 µL to 1,000 µL), the microbes exhibited slow growth as compared to control. The viable cell count also decreased as the nanoparticles concentration increased. This shows major difference in the bacterial culture of with and without nano particle. Under normal culture, without nanoparticles intervention, the microbes show lag phase at 0-4 h, the log phase begins and its exponential growth occurs between 4-8 h and after 12 h, stationary phase was attained. There was a slow growth observed when the culture was exposed to silver nanoparticles. This clearly shows the antimicrobial effect of nanoparticles. In this study we used green synthesized nanoparticles, which have shown a good antibacterial efficacy against the pathogenic microorganism Salmonella typhi.

Opis:
In this paper, the experimental data on nonlinear refraction of silver nanoparticle composites using a standard Z-scan technique are presented. It was found that the colloids of silver nanoparticles of various size possess a defocusing ability. Based on general considerations, one can conclude thermal lens nature of the nonlinear refraction of the colloids. Significantly different magnitudes of the nonlinear refractive index of silver nanoparticles suspended in water and in glycerol can be explained by differences in the specific heat capacity of mentioned fluids. The effective thickness for nonlinear-optical interaction of light with a two-dimensional silver nanoparticle array was estimated.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to develop a green synthesis of silver nanoparticles using mint plant leaves extracts. The fresh suspension of plant extracts was yellowish-green in color. However, after the addition of AgNO3 within 15min, the suspension showed a change in color to dark brown after 5 hours of incubation at room temperature. The formation of silver nanoparticles was confirmed using UV-Vis spectral analysis and revealed silver surface plasmon resonance band to be in a range around 200-500 nm. The XRD pattern showed the characteristic bragg peaks of (111), (200) and (220) planes of the face center cubic (FCC) silver nanoparticles AgNPS. Under scanning electron microscope (SEM), silver nanoparticles with a mean particle size of 26 nm and a spherical shape were most frequently observed. In testing, the synthesized AgNPs colloidal solution showed better antibacterial activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial strains. The diameter of the inhibition zones of AgNPs at 50 µg/ml concentration against bacterial strains such as Bacillus subtilis and Escherichia coli were 25 mm and 20 mm, respectively.

Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles were obtained in the polyethylene glycol environment. An effect of precipitation and drying temperatures on the size of the prepared nanoparticles was observed. Superparamagnetic iron oxide Fe3O4 , around of 15 nm, was obtained at a precipitation temperature of 80°C and a drying temperature of 60°C. The presence of functional groups characteristic for a polyethylene glycol surfactant on the surface of nanoparticles was confirmed by FTIR and XPS measurements. Silver nanoparticles were introduced by the impregnation. Fe3O4-Ag nanostructure with bactericidal properties against Escherichia coli species was produced. Interesting magnetic properties of these materials may be helpful to separate the bactericidal agent from the solution.

Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) is employed in several potential applications, relying of its special chemical and physical properties in addition to its low toxicity and biocompatibility. The aim of this work is to prepare polyvinylpyrrolidone-silver (PVP-Ag) nanocomposite with high inhibiting effect on the microbial growth and low cytotoxicity. In situ prepared small stable spherical silver nanoparticles, with narrow range particle size distribution, were obtained by easy, economical and rapid chemical reduction method. Silver ions were reduced to silver nanoparticles using low amount of sodium borohydride (NaBH₄) as a strong reducing agent. PVP-Ag nanocomposite was prepared using PVP as a stabilizing and capping agent. Formation of the spherical silver nanoparticles with mean particle size 5 nm was confirmed by ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, high resolution transmission electron microscopy, and dynamic light scattering. The inhibiting growth effect of the nanocomposite toward Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus), Gram-negative bacteria (Pseudomonas aeruginosa), and yeast fungus (Candida albicans) were studied. The cytotoxicity of the nanocomposite against BJ1 normal skin fibroblast cell line was tested. Results of this work presented perfect antimicrobial activity of the PVP-Ag nanocomposite towards bacteria and fungi with low cytotoxicity, which may lead to promising applications in skin wound healing.

Prolonged exposure to UV radiation, and ever-increasing life expectancy, mean that an increasing proportion of the population suffers from clouding of the intraocular lens. Nowadays, the performance of intraocular implantation procedures is commonplace. Unfortunately, with the increasing number of operations, the number of postoperative complications is also increasing. One way to avoid complications may be to use an intraocular implant that has been immersed in a solution containing silver nanoparticles. As part of the study, four selected intraocular implants – that are available on the ophthalmic market – were tested. In order to investigate the effect of silver particles on the optical properties of the implants, tests were carried out using a UV-VIS spectrophotometer. Two series of implants were tested: before and after immersion in a silver solution. The implants were immersed for a period of 7 days. It was found that the presence of silver particles does not have a negative impact on the translucency of the implants.

The present investigation demonstrates the formation of silver nanoparticles by the reduction of the aqueous silver metal ions during exposure to the Lagenaria siceraria leaf extract. The synthesized AgNPs have characterized by UV-visible spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) techniques. AgNPs formation has screened by UV-visible spectroscopy through colour conversion due to surface plasma resonance band at 427 nm. X-ray diffraction (XRD) confirmed that the resulting AgNPs are highly crystalline and the structure is face centered cubic (fcc). FT-IR spectrum indicates the presence of different functional groups present in the biomolecules capping the nanoparticles. Further, inhibitory activity of AgNPs and leaf extract were tested against human pathogens like gram-pastive (Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis), gram-negative (Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa). The results indicated that the AgNPs showed moderate inhibitory actions against human pathogens than Lagenaria siceraria leaf extract, demonstrating its antimicrobial value against pathogenic diseases.
