Opis:
The aim of the article is to show the lexical and stylistic diversity of the Polish language used in Upper Silesia, presented by Anna Cieplak, and to indicate the linguistic and cultural processes which the language of younger and older generations living in this region undergoes. The most important of them include the disappearance of the Silesian dialect in the speech of the thirty-year-old heroes and the intensification of vulgarization of the language as a result of the lack of professional and personal prospects in their lives. The lexical layer of the novel is dominated by the colloquial version of the Polish language along with youth slang, with a large number of Anglicisms, and a smaller number – Germanisms, mainly from the sphere of the Internet and stimulants. One can speak of the lexical-stylistic hybridity of the description of the world as a tool for expressing its diversity and complex identity of Silesians.
Celem artykułu jest ukazanie różnorodności leksykalnej i stylistycznej polszczyzny używanej na Górnym Śląsku, przedstawionej przez Annę Cieplak, oraz wskazanie na procesy językowo-kulturowe, jakim ulega język młodszych i starszych pokoleń zamieszkujących ten region. Do najważniejszych z nich należy zanikanie gwary śląskiej w mowie trzydziestoletnich bohaterów i nasilenie wulgaryzacji języka jako skutek braku w ich życiu perspektyw zawodowych i osobistych. W warstwie leksykalnej powieści dominuje odmiana potoczna polszczyzny wraz z młodzieżowym slangiem, z dużą liczbą anglicyzmów, mniejszą – germanizmów, głównie ze sfery internetu i używek. Można tu mówić o leksykalno-stylistycznej hybrydyczności opisu świata jako narzędzia wyrażania jego różnorodności i złożonej tożsamości Ślązaków.

The bibliography includes translations into the Silesian language made both in the standard script as well as in the non-standard one. The starting point for translations into the contemporary Silesian may be dated back to 2002. Since then, there have been irregularly published, usually in the form of collections, translations of various literary genres (with a preponderance of poetic forms) from dozen or so world languages, such as: Greek, Latin, French, German, Polish, Mandarin Chinese, English, Welsh, Russian, or the Upper Sorbian. No single translation from Silesian into other language is included, since heretofore no such a translation has been made.

Artykuł stanowi opracowanie z zakresu czasowników onomatopeicznych w gwarach Śląska, a konkretnie dotyczy leksemów opisujących głosy i zachowania ptaków. Zagadnienie zostało zaprezentowane na tle słowiańskim i w kontekście polszczyzny ogólnej, z uwzględnieniem polszczyzny historycznej (zwłaszcza doby staro- i średniopolskiej). Przytoczone przykłady opowiadają się za tezą o więzi między budową głoskową wyrazu a jego znaczeniem. Zwraca się uwagę na istotną w wypadku onomatopei opozycję u–i (samogłoskom tylnym: u, o, a odpowiada wyobrażenie dużych przedmiotów, a samogłoskom przednim: i, y, e – wyobrażenie małych obiektów). Ważny wydaje się sam fakt odnotowania interesującego zbioru „ptasich” onomatopei, gdyż w polskiej literaturze omawianej tematyce poświęca się stosunkowo niewiele miejsca (przeważają publikacje obcojęzyczne).
This paper is a study dedicated to onomatopoeic verbs in the Silesian dialect, and specifically, lexemes describing bird sounds and behaviours. The subject has been discussed compared to Slavic languages and in the context of the common Polish language, as well as taking into consideration historical Polish (in particular that in the Old- and Middle Polish era). The provided examples support the thesis that there exists a link between the word’s sound formation and its meaning. There is emphasized the opposition between ‘u’ and ‘i’ which is essential in the case of onomatopoeia (back vowels ‘u’, ‘o’ and ‘a’ are used with reference to large objects, while front vowels ‘i’, ‘y’ and ‘e’ – small objects). Noticing an interesting set of ‘bird-type’ onomatopoeia also seems important, since there is relatively little mention of this phenomena in the Polish literature (foreign studies prevail).

The article provides the characteristics and classification of the most frequentative verbs and verb phrases used in contemporary Silesian literature. It has been established that the largest number of the studied forms is related to the different ways people physically influence the reality that surrounds them and mental processes (i.e. cognitive, evaluative and descriptive ones). The lexical diversity between Polish standard lexis and Silesian literary usage amounts to fifty-eight percent. What influences this diversity is the presence of words of German and Czech origin which amount to almost a tenth of the Silesian lexicon. Slightly less than half of the verbs are derived forms, in the vast majority formed through prefixation, aspect suffixation and postfixation. The semantic and morphological structure of the studied verb forms demonstrates a farreaching intellectualisation and formal complexity of the Silesian lexicon.

The discussion on the nature of Upper Silesian idiom (is it a dialect or a language?) has lasted for many years. The aim of this paper is to shed light on the Upper Silesian idiom (Wasserpolnisch) in the works of Victor Kaluza. Thea subject of analysis were fragments of Kaluza’s roguish novel „Das Buch vom Kumpel Janek” (Breslau 1935) and a hitherto unpublished study on Wasserpolnisch.
Rozwodniony idiom lub o polsko-niemieckim miszmaszu językowym w twórczości Victora Kaluzy Dyskusja wokół charakteru idiomu górnośląskiego (dialekt czy może jednak język?) toczy się od wielu lat. Niniejszy artykuł ma na celu naświetlenie idiomu górnośląskiego (Wasserpolnisch) w twórczości Victora Kaluzy. Analizie poddane zostały zarówno fragmenty szelmowskiej powieści Kaluzy „Das Buch vom Kumpel Janek” (Breslau 1935), jak i niepublikowany dotąd szkic poświęcony Wasserpolnisch.

In diesem Artikel werden ausgewählte Beiträge mit gegenwärtigen Geschichtsnarrativen zu den oberschlesischen Auswanderern nach Texas im 19. Jahrhundert, den sog. Silesian Texans, vorgestellt und besprochen. Dabei werden die darin vorkommenden Zuschreibungen von nationalen Kategorien hinsichtlich der Identität, Sprache, kulturellen und ortsgebundenen Herkunft kritisch hinterfragt. Die dabei verwendete Methode ist die komparatistische Imagologie nach dem „Aachener Programm“. Diese eignet sich in besonderer Weise für derartige Untersuchungen in transnationalen Gebieten wie Oberschlesien und ihren Überseeformen in Texas, USA. Die angeführten Quellen aus den letzten drei Jahrzehnten werden neuesten wissenschaftlichen Erkenntnissen hinsichtlich der Forschung zu den Silesian Texans wie auch der (ober)schlesischen Sprache gegenübergestellt. Der Artikel kann als Bestandaufnahme aktueller Quellen zum Phänomen der Silesian Texans wie auch als ihre kritische Besprechung verstanden werden. In der Untersuchung werden historische Fehler und Anachronismen in den Geschichtsnarrativen aufgezeigt, in denen die Herkunftsregion der Silesian Texans nicht ihrem Charakter als ein Grenzgebiet entsprechend, weder multikulturell noch transnational wahrgenommen wird.
 In this article, selected contemporary historical articles with narratives about the Upper Silesian emigrants to Texas in the 19th century, the so-called Silesian Texans, are cited and discussed. The attributions of national categories with regard to identity, language, cultural and local origin are critically examined. The method used is comparative imagology according to the “Aachener Programm”. This is especially suitable for alike studies in transnational areas such as Upper Silesia and its oversea diaspora in Texas, USA. The cited sources of the last three decades are contrasted with the latest scholarly findings regarding research on the Silesian Texans, as well as the (Upper) Silesian language itself. This article can be seen as a survey of current sources on the phenomenon of the Silesian Texans, as well as a critical discussion of them. The study highlights historical errors and anachronisms in historical narratives in which the Silesian Texans’ region of origin is perceived as neither multicultural nor transnational according to its character as a borderland.
W niniejszym tekście przedstawiono i omówiono wybrane artykuły ze współczesnymi narracjami historycznymi na temat górnośląskich emigrantów do Teksasu w XIX wieku, tzw. śląskich Teksańczyków/Silesian Texans. Krytycznej analizie poddane zostały występujące w nich atrybucje kategorii narodowych w odniesieniu do tożsamości, języka, pochodzenia kulturowego i miejsca. Zastosowana metoda to imagologia porównawcza według „Aachener Programm/Programu z Akwizgranu”. Jest ona szczególnie przydatna do tego typu badań na obszarach transnarodowych, takich jak Górny Śląsk i jego zamorskie formy w Teksasie w USA. Przytoczone źródła z ostatnich trzech dekad są zestawione z najnowszymi wynikami badań nad śląskimi Teksańczykami, jak również nad językiem (górno) śląskim. Artykuł można traktować jako przegląd aktualnych źródeł na temat fenomenu śląskich Teksańczyków, jak również ich krytyczną dyskusję. Studium wskazuje na błędy historyczne i anachronizmy w narracjach historycznych, w których region pochodzenia śląskich Teksańczyków nie jest postrzegany zgodnie z jego charakterem jako region pogranicza, zatem ani jako region wielokulturowy, ani transnarodowy.

The article presents initial findings from a research project that aims to investigate to what extent German loan words are still in use in Silesian today. Over the centuries, Silesian has adopted far more loan words from German than any other dialect on Polish territory. The project focuses on speakers of Silesian and analyses their so-called subjective frequency of usage of specific Silesian Germanisms in comparison with synonymous words in Standard Polish. Nearly 700 word pairs are tested. The estimates of usage frequency are correlated with the respondents’ sociodemographic data and their so-called language attitudes towards Silesian and its position in Silesian-Polish society. The question of how Germanisms are treated is a central issue in the current discussion on the codification of Silesian.

Despite the numerous attempts made in the 21st century at gaining linguistic independence, the Silesian ethnolect still enjoys the official status of a dialect. Lack of success in the attempted emancipation should be attributed to the linguistic policy adopted by the Polish authorities and political elites. The attempts at emancipation of the language spoken in Silesia have been subjected to criticism on many levels of the social discourse including the academic level. However, a detailed analysis of the presented arguments is evidence that there are no objective, linguistic premises that questioning promotion of the Silesian ethnolect to the status of a regional language is unsubstantiated.

Jest to tekst osobisty, relacjonujący moje własne doświadczenia związane ze śląszczyzną w jej wersji cieszyńskiej – moim językiem ojczystym, z późniejszym wypieraniem jej z mojego życia przez hegemonię polszczyzny, a następnie świadomym wracaniem do śląskiej mowy, co jest nie tylko gestem lingwistycznym, lecz także tożsamościowym i politycznym. Autoetnografię rozumiem za Carolyn Ellis jako praktykę badawczą i pisarską „łączącą to, co autobiograficzne i osobiste, z tym, co kulturowe, społeczne i polityczne” (Ellis 2004: xix), opierającą się na emocjach, introspekcji, ucieleśnieniu i wyrażającą się w różnych konwencjach literackich. W drugiej części artykułu przedstawiam także regularną analizę problematyki związanej ze śląszczyzną, odwołując się do literatury przedmiotu i współczesnych koncepcji teoretycznych. Skupiam się na kwestii performatywności języka, teorii grup wyciszonych, problemie odróżniania języków i gwar jako kwestii politycznej; proponuję ujmowanie cieszyńskiej rzeczy jako modalnej wersji śląszczyzny. Mój projekt traktuję jako „krytyczną interwencję w życie społeczne, polityczne i kulturowe” (Holman Jones 2009: 175).
This is a personal text relating to my own experiences referring to the Teschen version of the Silesian language – my native tongue – its later removal from my life by the hegemony of Polish, and then my conscious return to Silesian, which is not only a linguistic gesture, but also a political and identity declaration. Following Carolyn Ellis, I understand auto-ethnography as a research and writing practice “that connect the autobiographical and personal to the cultural, social, and political” (Ellis 2004: xix), based on emotions, introspection, and embodiment, and expressed in various literary conventions. In the second part of the paper I present a regular analysis of the issues related to the Silesian language referring to the subject literature and contemporary theoretical concepts, and focus on the issue of language performativity, muted groups theory, the problem of distinction between languages and dialects as a political issue, and my proposal to treat the Teschen tongue as a modal version of the Silesian language. I treat my project as “critical intervention in social, political and cultural life” (Holman Jones 2009: 175).

The purpose of this article is to present the academic profile of Professor Alina Kowalska and to commemorate her as a researcher engaged in scholarly work at the University of Silesia. She was among the people who built the Institute of Polish Studies in Katowice (and earlier in Sosnowiec) from the ground up, and therefore determined its character. Her research interests pivoted around two mutually intertwined issues: the evolution of the general language and evolution of the Silesian Polish in particular. Over time, she started to pay more and more attention to the issues of the Silesian region. Her works were characterized by diligence in language documentation and by research objectivity.

Over the past two decades, Silesian literature has been written in eleven different types of orthography, the most important of which are the classical, neo-Steuer and “slabikŏrzowa” orthographies. Other orthographic proposals, e.g. by D. Dyrda, B. Kallus, P. Kalinowski, H. Kaluza, R. Wencel, did not become popular and were abandoned rather quickly. As a result, contemporary Silesian literature was dominated by the “ślabikŏrzowa” spelling, gaining popularity due to its conservative form and the support of the most essential Silesian publishing houses. However, an obstacle to the complete stabilisation of Silesian orthography is the variant spelling of “ślabikŏrzowa” (“full “ślabikorz” and simplified “ślabikŏrz”) and no detailed, explicative normative works (i.e. orthographic dictionary, grammar).

Ponašymu – the mixed language code of Těšín SilesiaThis article describes the development of the linguistic situation in the border region of Těšín Silesia throughout its history, with particular emphasis on the so-called ponašymu – a mixed language code used in the Czech part of the region. It is based on a random combination of forms of the traditional Těšín dialect with the standard Czech language and, to a lesser extent, elements borrowed from the Polish and Slovak languages and from neighbouring Moravian dialects. An important element of the study is the analysis of selected material collected by the author during fieldwork in August 2018. Ponašymu – mieszany kod językowy czeskiego Śląska CieszyńskiegoArtykuł opisuje rozwój sytuacji językowej w pogranicznym regionie Śląska Cieszyńskiego na przestrzeni dziejów, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem tzw. ponašymu – mieszanego kodu językowego używanego w czeskiej części regionu. Oparty jest on na dowolnym łączeniu form tradycyjnego śląskiego dialektu cieszyńskiego ze standardowym językiem czeskim i w mniejszym stopniu elementami zapożyczonymi z języka polskiego, słowackiego i sąsiednich gwar morawskich. Ważnym elementem pracy jest analiza wybranych materiałów zebranych przeze mnie w trakcie badań terenowych w sierpniu 2018 r.

Opis:
The article presents the results of a functional analysis of Silesian texts used in internet communication. The linguistic corpus consists of texts from portals and websites related to Upper Silesia, Opole Silesia and Cieszyn Silesia (including the Czech part). If the Silesian isolect is used as the main means of communication, all communication functions can be performed. Texts in the Silesian code particularly often fulfill metatextual and representational functions. For some functions, language stylization is used. As stylistic means in Silesian texts, lexical  means from other codes are primarily used, i.e. from standard Polish, Czech, English, and German; lexemes with a clear slang character are included in the output codes. The communicative functions of these stylistic means are primarily poetic and expressive.
W artykule przedstawiono wyniki analizy funkcjonalnej tekstów śląskich, wykorzystywanych w komunikacji internetowej. Korpus materiałowy pochodzi z portali i stron internetowych związanych z terenem Górnego Śląska, Śląska Opolskiego i Śląska Cieszyńskiego (łącznie z czeską częścią). W przypadku wykorzystania kodu śląskiego jako głównego środka komunikacji realizowane są wszystkie funkcje komunikacyjne. Teksty w kodzie śląskim szczególnie często realizują funkcję metatekstową i funkcję przedstawieniową. W wypadku niektórych funkcji sięga się po stylizację językową. W funkcji środków stylistycznych w tekstach śląskich wykorzystywane są przede wszystkim środki leksykalne z innych kodów: ogólnopolskiego, czeskiego, angielskiego, niemieckiego, w tym również leksemy o wyraźnym nacechowaniu slangowym w kodach wyjściowych. Funkcje komunikacyjne tych środków stylistycznych to przede wszystkim funkcja poetycka i funkcja ekspresywna.
