The main purpose of this article is to discuss the views of the Jesuit Stanisław Dunin–Borkowski (1864–1934) about Albert Einstein’s theory of relativity. These days, Dunin–Borkowski is a rather obscure figure despite rising to fame in the interwar period as an outstanding expert in the philosophy of Baruch Spinoza. Thus, the secondary aim of this article is to remind ourselves of this somewhat forgotten scholar. As a researcher, writer, and pedagogue, Dunin–Borkowski was interested in numerous fields of knowledge. Among these were the natural sciences, including physics and the influence that new physical theories had on philosophical thought. This present study therefore fills a gap in the existing research about how Polish philosophers received Einstein’s theories. The example of Dunin–Borkowski also serves as a basis for discussing some of the fundamental problems of neo-scholasticism in receiving new mathematicised scientific theories.

Selection of new students is based on student potential. Research on the potential of the cognitive abilities and records of Islamic school students’ academic achievement in Indonesia are still very rare. This paper presents empirical data about the predictive ability of a test of scholastic ability for the academic achievement of Islamic school students in Indonesia. This research used a quantitative approach with a survey method that used the Ministry of Religious Affair (MORA)’s Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) and Students’ scores on 5 subjects in the first semester. The subjects of this study were 9609 Islamic school students selected using a quota sampling technique that represented Islamic schools in Indonesia. The results of this study indicate that all of the SAT subsets, those are verbal, numerical, analytical and spatial, are significant predictors of academic achievement of Islamic school students in Indonesia. The empirical analytical sub-test is the strongest predictor of Islamic school students’ academic scores. While, the analytical sub-test has very significant correlation with the academic score on Islamic Studies subjects. Meanwhile the verbal sub-test has a very strong relationship with academic achievement in Arabic and English subjects, the numerical sub-test very strongly relates to academic achievement in science and mathematics subjects. Among the four SAT subtests, the spatial sub-test had the lowest correlation with all subjects

Ci sono tanti fenomeni negativi nella vita sacramentale che ci mostrano una relazione disturbata tra la fede vissuta e i sacramenti. Da una parte vediamo una crescente diminuzione della frequenza ai sacramenti nel mondo occidentale. D’altra parte la pratica sacramentale nel mondo occidentale spesso non è una consapevole espressione di fede. Vediamo tanti difetti dal punto di vista di fides qua ed anche da quello di fides quae. Il chiarimento della relazione fede/sacramenti è diventato una questione improrogabile. Noi dobbiamo trattare il tema nel contesto attuale della Chiesa, ma alla luce della tradizione della Chiesa. Prima di tutto è molto utile di analizzare le opere dei padri (cfr. I, II, III. capitoli). I Padri sono testimoni della fede dei primi secoli vitalmente inseriti nella tradizione che deriva dagli Apostoli. Essi infatti hanno congiunto sacra scrittura, teologia, liturgia, vita spirituale e pastorale in una unità vitale per cui le loro opere ci aiutano anche per la Chiesa del terzo millenio. La pristina Sanctorum Patrum norma (cfr. SC 50) è da ritenersi la norma e la regola ispiratrice anche per la Chiesa di oggi. Anche la sintesi scolatistica (Tommaso d’Aquino) ci aiuta per dare una risposta alla nostra domanda principale. Nella spiegazione di S. Tommaso vediamo come punto di partenza una tesi chiara: “La Chiesa è fondata sulla fede e sui sacramenti”, e qualifica espressamente i sacramenti come sacramenta fidei. Dobbiamo conoscere anche la Riforma e l’insegnamento del concilio di Trento. Vedremo che l’analisi storica del rapporto tra fede e sacramenti ci aiuta la risposta a proposito del problema della Chiesa nei nostri giorni. Come conclusione finale vale la pena di analizzare il Sacrosanctum concilium n. 59.
There are many negative phenomena in the sacramental life which point out to a disturbed relationship between lived faith and the sacraments. On one hand, we see a growing decrease of attendance to the sacraments in the western world. On the other hand, the sacramental practice in the western world is often not a conscious expression of faith. We see many flaws from the point of view of the fides qua and from that of the fides quae as well. The explanation of the faith-sacraments relationship has become an urgent question. We should deal with the topic in the actual context of the Church, but in the light of the Church’s tradition. First of all it is very useful to analyze the works of the Fathers (cfr. chapters I, II, III). The Fathers are witnesses of the faith of the first centuries vitally inserted in the tradition which derives from the Apostles. In fact they have joined together sacred scripture, theology, liturgy, spiritual and pastoral life in a vital unity through which their works can help us and also the Church of the third millenium. The pristina Sanctorum Patrum norma (cfr. SC 50) is to be considered the norm and the inspiring rule for the Church of today as well. Also the scholastic synthesis (Thomas Aquinas) helps us to give an answer to our main question. In the explanation of St. Thomas we find a clear thesis as a point of departure: “The Church is founded upon faith and its sacraments”, and expressly qualifies the sacraments as sacramenta fidei. We should also know the Reformation and the teaching of the Council of Trent. We will see that the historic analysis of the relationship between faith and the sacraments helps us to find the answer to the subject of the Church’s problem in our days. As a final conclusion it is worth analyzing the Sacrosanctum concilium n. 59.

This paper briefly shows how Summa Theologiae is composed. We may notice that the structure of Summa results from the careful and precise consideration, further, it perfectly embodies the Scholastic mode for assesing arguments. The remarkable achievement of Aquinas is to demonstrate, through the structure of intellectual reasoning, the rational structure of the universe. Universal idea, reason understood as a principle for a methodological inquiry, serves as the overall rule both for intellectual and aesthetic work. We find its expression in the Medieval architecture, especially in Gothic cathedrals.

It is generally known that freedom of contract, as expressed by the pacta sunt servanda rule, became an unquestionable principle of contract law in the theories of natural law developed in the Enlightenment. However, the roots of this principle go back much further in time, to the doctrine formulated by the medieval Canonists, who were the first to say that unilateral promises, even informal ones, were binding. Nevertheless, a long process led from these early beginnings to the definitive recognition of the principle. Te aim of the present article is to identify the crucial moments in this development, to which many different intellectual traditions contributed: from the doctrine of natural law formulated by the Canonists, through the Second Scholastic teachings pursued at the School of Salamanca, to the theories of natural law developed in the early Enlightenment. Unlike the general practice in the literature produced on the subject hitherto, my intention is not to pinpoint the exact time when the principle was created, and still less to ascribe it to any one of these intellectual movements. My argument is that it was only the overall outcome of these contributions, each of them equally important, that led to the recognition of the principle. My article focuses on its conceptual evolution, considering themes such as the creation of the general notion of the contract, its relation to the concept of a promise, the capacity of the human will to bind itself by a promise, and the moral grounds for its binding force.
Jak powszechnie wiadomo, swoboda umów awansowała do rangi podstawowej zasady prawa kontraktowego w doktrynach prawnonaturalnych epoki oświecenia. Jej korzenie są jednak znacznie głębsze, sięgają bowiem myśli średniowiecznych kanonistów, którzy jako pierwsi głosili tezę o wiążącym charakterze jednostronnych przyrzeczeń, nawet tych nieformalnych. Od tych pierwszych początków do pełnego uznania zasdy swobody umów prowadziła jednak długa droga. Celem przedłożonego artykułu jest ustalenie kluczowych momentów tego rozwoju. Przyczynili się do niego przedstawiciele wielu różnych nurtów myślowych: od wczesnośredniowiecznej kanonistyki, poprzez drugą scholastykę ze szkoły w Salamance, po teorie prawnonaturalne początków oświecenia. Inaczej niż w dotychczasowej literaturze, nie jest intencją autorki ustalenie dokładnego momentu powstania omawianej zasady ani tym bardziej przypisanie jej autorstwa jednemu ze wskazanych nurtów. Zgodnie z proponowaną tezą zasada swobody umów w jej współczesnym kształcie powstała w wyniku interakcji wszystkich tych tradycji, przy czym wkład intelektualny każdej z nich był równie istotny. Artykuł skupia się na historii pojęć, takich jak ogólne pojęcie kontraktu, jego relacja do przyrzeczenia, koncepcja woli jako źródła zobowiązania kontraktowego oraz moralne uzasadnienie mocy wiążącej kontraktów nieformalnych.
Che la libertà contrattuale, espressa nel broccardo pacta sunt servanda, fosse diventata un principio pressoché indiscutibile nelle teorie giusnaturalistiche dell’Illuminismo, è conoscenza comune. Le sue radici sono tuttavia molto più profonde, in quanto risalgono al pensiero dei giuscanonisti medievali – i primi sostenitori della forza obbligatoria delle promesse informali. quello che ha portato al riconoscimento defnitivo del principio in questione è stato però un processo lungo e complesso. L’obbiettivo del presente articolo consiste nell’individuare i momenti cruciali di questo sviluppo, al quale hanno contribuito molte correnti intellettuali – dalla canonistica, attraverso la seconda scolastica, fino al giusnaturalismo dell’età dei Lumi. Senza tentare di decidere quale di queste correnti abbia portato il contributo decisivo alla creazione del principio in questione, come ha fatto la letteratura precedente, si propone la tesi che è stata la somma dei detti contributi, ciascuno di pari importanza, a portare all’affermarsi della libertà contrattuale nel pensiero giuridico dell’età moderna. Le presenti considerazioni sono focalizzate sullo sviluppo dei concetti, quali la nozione generale del contratto, il suo rapporto al concetto della promessa, la volontà umana come la fonte dell’obbligatorietà del contratto, nonché la giustifcazione morale di tale forza obbligatoria.

Частично затрагивается роль в этом про- цессе таких личностей как Димитрий Ростовский и Петр Могила. Так же в статье идет речь о проблемах самоидентификации и некоторых «метаниях» между православной и католической традициями и о том, как это повлияло на дальнейшую историю этих народов.

St. Thomas of Aquinas was not only a formidable philosopher and theologist, but also he was a tireless exegete of the Holy Scripture. He wrote comments on the books of both the Old and New Testament. His exegesis has several traits. It is constructed around two fundamental rules: the analogy of Catholic faith and the analogy of Biblical faith. Furthermore it contains a typical to the Medieval exegesis – scholastic, patristic and theological lineament.
Święty Tomasz z Akwinu był nie tylko znakomitym filozofem i teologiem, ale także niestrudzonym egzegetą Pisma Świętego. Spod jego pióra wyszły komentarze zarówno do ksiąg Starego, jak i Nowego Testamentu. Egzegeza św. Tomasza z Akwinu odznacza się kilkoma cechami. Jest to egzegeza oparta na dwóch fundamentalnych regułach: analogii wiary katolickiej i analogii wiary biblijnej. Ponadto posiada także charakterystyczny dla całej egzegezy średniowiecznej rys scholastyczny, patrystyczny i teologiczny.

Opis:
The claim that philosophy should be cultivated in a coaching style is the main thesis of this article. In the first part of the essay, I explain the distinction between a coaching (Socratic) paradigm and a scholastic (Aristotelian) paradigm of philosophy . In the second part , I present Frankl’s logotherapy as an example of Socratic or coaching philosophy. The coaching model of philosophy, neglected by mainstream philosophy, found its place in humanistic psychotherapy. Finally, the last section of the article contains some practical examples of coaching methods applied to the teaching of philosophy (epistemology).
Główną tezą tekstu jest uznanie tzw. modelu coachingowego za pierwotny i wciąż żywy sposób uprawiania filozofii. Twierdzę, że filozofia akademicka, która od kilku stuleci tkwi w tradycji scholastycznej, może być uprawiana w modelu coachingowym. W drugim paragrafie przedstawiam odróżnienie dwóch rodzajów filozofowania: Sokratejskiego – określonego w tekście mianem „coachingowego” – oraz Arystotelesowskiego, nazywanego tutaj „scholastycznym”. W trzecim paragrafie pokazuję, w jaki sposób Wiktor Frankl nawiązuje do coachingowej tradycji uprawiania filozofii w swojej praktyce terapeutycznej. W czwartym przedstawiam przykłady zastosowania modelu coachingowego w dydaktyce filozofii.

In this paper we posit the question which seems to be the natural implication of von Hildebrand's adherence to Catholicism. Especially, when philosophy is concerned one cannot escape the issue. Hence, we gather materials which help to answer the question what was D. von Hildebrand's stance on metaphysics of St. Thomas. We attempt to show to what extend von Hildebrand was acquianted with philosophy of Aquinas, further, what was his opinion on philosophers who represented the school of Aquinas, and how did he perceive his phenomenology in confrontation with metaphysics. We also present the context of employed by von Hildebrand phrases as „fortress of Thomism” and „narrowness” of integrists. They contribute much to the overall picture. We notice that von Hildebrand kept on loving truth, the Catholic Church and especially the Latin Mass out of the attachment to the philosophical.

In the article, the topic of the medieval „discovering” of the market is discussed, with the references to the Paolo Prodis’ book Settimo non rubare. Furto e mercato nella storia dell’Occidente. The author of the book, following Harold Berman, finds the changes in the 11th and 12th century Church, as the decisive mile stones in the development of the civilization of Western Christianity. The mentioned „papal revolution” led to the historical distinction between the spiritual and the political sphere, and later, to the autonomy of economic one. Accordingly, the Italian historian rejects the thesis that Enlightenment was the new beginning in the European history. In the P. Prodi’s analysis, the Latin term forum plays the crucial role. The word signified the place, square, especially the place where court proceedings occurred. Therefore, in the later abstract sense forum signified criteria or rules of judgement: both in the juridical meaning (forum civile, f. canonico, f. consciantiae), and the economic one, in which forum meant exactly „the market”. The “discovering” of the market rules was a consequence the development of the theoretical reasoning about mercantile activity. It was essentially related to the concepts of the just price (iustum pretium) and the common estimation (communis aestimatio). According to P. Prodi the common character of the estimation was of essential importance, as well as the new version of the Roman rule Res tantum valet, quantum vendi potest, with the medevial addendum: scilicet communiter. The author criticised the view, that the process of defining of the market was mainly the result of reception of Aristotelian Ethics and Politics. He underlined that in the penitential handbooks of the 12th and 13th century the focus was significantly shifted from the vice of avarice to the commandment „You shall not steal”; moreover the significant violation of the rules of fair market exchange begun to be considered as a sin against this commandment. In the article, the significance of the application of the notion forum commune by Thomas Aquinas (in the treatise on credit sale) was underlined. The interconnection between the concept of the market and the idea of common good was expressed in the juxtaposition of terms: forum commune – bonum commune. M. W. Bukała observes that the thesis about the limited influence of Aristotelian thought on the examined issue can be additionally confirmed by the analysis of the Article on mercantile profit in Summa Theologiae by St. Thomas (II-II, q. 77, a. 4), where Aquinas distances himself from the Philosopher’s view. The P. Prodi discourses were amended by the significant distinction: not every violation of ethics of economic life was considered as the theft by the medieval moralists – e.g.: the determinatio of the casus of buying grain with the deferred delivery for an undercut price, in canon „Naviganti” (X 5.5.19, 2do), and in the related comments of the 13th century canonist, Clarus Florentinus. Moreover, the Jacques Le Goff’s critique of the Prodi’s approach was undermined.

Opis:
The title of this paper is to draw attention to the deteriorating and some say despicable conditions in the academic world. The paper utilizes the critical research method which is an emerging research paradigm in educational research. It also attempts to encompass a somewhat light-hearted word-fun approach to make a very serious problem more palatable reading. Its aim is to promote change. The work here focuses on illuminating the legacy conditions in the infancy of public education and following the mutations leading to today’s conditions of companies, organizations and individuals or pigs at the trough who has forsaken learning for earnings and profits. Revealed in the research are such enlightening findings as in the National Center for Education’s 120 Years of American Education: A Statistical Portrait. The 107-page report. covers education characteristics of the population, enrollment rates, educational attainment, illiteracy, income, elementary and secondary education, statistical trends, enrollment, school attendance, pupil/teacher ratios, student assessment (which discusses test results trends), high school graduates, public elementary and secondary school, revenues, expenditures, higher education, enrollment, institutions and professional staff, degrees conferred, master’s degrees, doctor’s degrees, first-professional degrees, revenues for higher education, expenditures, endowments and physical plants. What the report does not mention not even once in all its 107 pages, 21 sets of figures and 37 tables is the word learning. Also demonstrated is the current level of the very poor results of products of the U.S. educational system by discussing the historical performances of U.S. students on international achievement tests. The research reveals both the intended and unintended consequences of grade inflation, student cheating, professor/teacher good grades for better class review problems and the false sense of learning. The purpose of this research is to (a) to identify trends and factors negatively impacting student learning; (b) inform to help solicit change and mitigate future risk factors and (c) challenge the reader to become part of the solution. These findings and the continuation of research activity will be used to leverage additional interventional support specifically for implementation to reverse the trend of profitability at the expense of student learning.

The article begins from the state of research on the history of Thomistic philosophy to the Czech Republic. It discusse the most important figures of the Czech Thomism in 1897-1948 taking them in two generations of scholars. The particular attention is devoted to the Thomist environment Dominican Order from Olomouc who were publishing quarterly Filosofická revue in 1929-1948. As an example of the work of Czech Thomists author discusses an issue connected with the philosophical and theological aspects of upbringing the man. The achievements of Czech Thomists compared with whole Czech philosophy in author’s opinion is considerable: they organized International Conference of Thomistic Philosophy, they founded a magazine which was up to the global mark and published in it among others Maritain, Husserl, Patočka, they discussed about the latest philosophical currents and they reviewed philosophical dissertations from whole world. Czech Thomists’ writer activity also is very important: they published a lot of textbooks, monographs, dissertations and articles. Not all aims of Czech philosophers realized but they ordered relationships between faith and science. It was the reason treating Thomism in Republic Czech as a methodological thoroughness paragon.

Opis:
common characteristic of thus oriented approaches is their purely theoretic character. Pierre Bourdieu’s empirically grounded reflexive sociology questions the alleged reflexivity of an ‘ordinary’ agent’s actions, while attempting to explain the social conditions that need to occur for a real reflexivity of the intellectuals to come about. The purpose of this paper is to present conditions that hinder, or prevent the carrying out of fully reflexively oriented research of law. Firstly, it explains that individuals acting in the world almost always employ an embodied ‘practical sense’ – mental schemata and schemata of action developed in the process of socialisation. Secondly, the paper proves that subject’s (also a lawyer-researcher) way of thinking is a result of his or her position within a social structure (in the field of law). Thirdly, it is shown that the illusion of a fully distanced mind is a special kind of disposition of an intellectual – a disposition that prevents him or her from recognising the social conditions of her thinking. It is stipulated that what reflexively oriented research of law needs is not only the objectification of the research subject, but also a critical analysis of the researcher’s standpoint. For a lawyer his would mean, among others, the awareness of their entanglement in dogmas acquired in the course of their education, objectification of practice-derived experiences, or confrontation with subjects from outside of the legal field (eg. sociologiests).
