Opis:
The paper is concerned with the plane strain problem of Love wave propagation through a water-saturated sand layer overlaying an elastic half-space. Dynamic loads, induced by the wave passage, generate irreversible strains in the soil matrix, giving rise to the development of excess pore water pressures and subsequent reduction of soil liquefaction. The process of pore pressure generation is analysed within the framework of compaction theory of saturated granular media. Results of numerical calculations, carried out by means of the finite element method, illustrate the evolution of pore pressures and the development of liquefaction in the subsoil, as well as the changes in the free surface displacements.

Opis:
In the paper an empirical method of determination of elastic constants of non-cohesive soils on the basis of the experimental data from conventional triaxial com-pression tests, is proposed. The method is based on a new interpretation of triaxial tests during which samples of dry sands are subjected to several cycles of loading and unloading. The test results of all strain and stress components measured in the experiment are presented in terms of deviatoric stress versus deviatoric strain and mean effective pressure versus volumetric strain diagrams. It is assumed that after any stress reversals the material exhibits purely elastic response that obeys Hooke's linear law. Elastic moduli are determined from the first stage of unloading, which is different from the other methods commonly accepted in soil mechanics. The main advantage of the method proposed was isolating linear behaviour of the material that corresponds to elastic response and including in the analysis the lateral deform-ation of a sample. In the paper several examples of test results for various confining pressures and initial void ratios are presented and analysed. Comparison with other methods is made and discussed.

Model research on competitive sorption of heavy metal cations (Cu2+ , Zn2+ , Ni2+ ,Co2+ , Cd2+ and Cr3+ ) with Ph2+cations was carried out in the followingmineral soils: grey-brown podzolic derived from loess (Orthic Luvisols)using a dynamic method.Investigation on the course and the range of the sorption from the two- component solutions allowed to determine mobility of individual heavy metal cations in relation to lead (II) cations. At the same time, it allowed to evaluate their phyto-availability. Elements, which most easily entered sorptive complexes of both of the investigated soils were copper (II) and chrominium (III) cations. The rest of the cations showed different energy levels of entrance with simultaneous sorption with lead (II) cations. During competitive sorption of heavy metal cations, i.e. at saturation the columns with two component solution, the presence of the second, opposite process namely desorption of the following cations from the soil:Co2+ , Zn2+ , Ni2+ , and Cd2+ was observed. Desorption levels were characteristic for particular cations and depended on the type of soil.

Opis:
The paper presents numerical solution to the problem of the symmetri quasi-static large-strain expansion of a cylindrical cavity in sand. The boundary value problem is solved with the use of a constitutive equation of hypoplasticity calibrated for a particular sand. As the radius of the cavity increases, the stresses and the density on the cavity surface asymptotically approach limit values which correspond to a so-called critical state of the sand. The limit values depend on the initial stresses and the initial density. The solutions are compared with experimental results for the same sand available in the literature. A comparison is also made with numerical solutions obtained by other authors.

Opis:
Several successful applications of the hypoplastic models would not be possible without a reliable and simple calibration procedure of the model parameters. The procedure utilizing standard properties of grain assemblies is well-suited for sands and is briefly outlined here. However, there are limits for the application of this approach for other soils. This is demonstrated for a coarse-grained limestone rockfill and a fined-grained loess. Whereas the parameter determination of the limestone rockfill is mainly limited by the available laboratory equipment, the calibration procedure must be significantly modified for the loess soil. Finally, a serious problem concerning the application of the hypoplastic model for soils with low friction angles is discussed. It is shown that in this case the ratio of incremental stiffness moduli in triaxial and isotropic compression is unrealistically low.

Quite large areas of the alluvial soils in the valley of the river Bobr were destructed by the sand and gravel exploitation. After the recultivation measures, which consisted of backfilling of the open-castwith waste aggregate, levelling the surface and putting on such prepared surface 50-200 cm of the stripping material, the yield was very low.The field and laboratory experiments have shown that during the technical operations the soil was compacted to such degree, that the root growth and water permeability was restricted to large extent. The soil compaction was noted in the whole soil profile. The evidences of this process were the high bulk density( often over 1,8 Mg m-3), very low water permeability values and low air capacity. The situation during the 12 years from the finishing of the recultivation has not changed.

The purpose of drumlin formation is to facilitate glacier flow. Drumlins form in a deforming layer between ice and s q ground, they produce a pimpled ground surface which causes less drag in the flowing system, after the fashion of the Prandtl effect which reduces boundary layer detachment (as in the flying golf ball). This pimpled surface has selforganising properties and this causes the development of a low drag situation. The drumlin field is the critical phenomenon; the formation of individual drumlins is a small part of the overall effect.

The newly obtained data supplemented our knowledge about risk for travellers, tourists and natives of Europe connected with malaria, leishmaniasis and other tropical diseases. It was discovered that healthy carriers of Epstein-Barr virus (nearly 90% of human population) have a great risk to get chronic Burkitt lymphoma disease as a result of Plasmodium falciparum (tropical malaria agent) infection. HIV carriers being occasionally in contact with visceral leishmaniasis vectors (sand-flies infected on dogs in the Mediterranean area) not only got a heavy form of disease but became a source of infection for healthy people. Airport malaria and outbreaks of dengue fever sometimes were (and are) connected with an import of infective Anopheles or Aedes mosquitoes. The high risk of borreliosis and ehrlichiosis infection exists in the forested European areas along the highways, where picnics and other types of recreation of travellers and tourists are typical and where the anthropogenically changed Ixodes ticks subpopulations are distributed. Such physiologically changed part of tick population is more aggressive and «changed ticks» more often are vectors of one, two or even more agent species simultaneously.

Eight sandy and three loess forest and arable soils taken from the S-E region of Poland were used in the study. The following fractions of C were determined: total organic carbon, fraction soluble in 0.5 mol NaOH dm-3 (humic acids + fulvic acids), humic acids, fulvic acids, fraction soluble in 0.5 mol H2SO4 dm-3 (hemicelluloses) and residue. Quantity and quality of organic matter depended on horizon and soil use. The highest content was shown by fraction of humus acids and residue, whereas the lowest - hemicelluloses fraction. In most soils C ratio of humic to fulvic acids exceeded 1.0. On average, in humus horizons, it was higher in arable than in forest soils and in loess as against sandy soils. In sandy soils, a slightly higher content of humus fraction and lower residue one than in loess soils was found.
