Opis:
The sexual economy prevalent within universities, as well as how young people perceive, interpret, and experience their sexuality, present complex dynamics, which, if not handled with great emotional intelligence, may disrupt their educational aspirations. This paper investigates the psycho-social implications of “semester marriages” within institutions of higher learning. Guided by principles of the qualitative approach and the theory of planned action, the paper disinterred that students experienced intense regret and guilt as a result of backstreet abortions. Soul-tie complications emanating from sharing the “wife-husband” bond also made it difficult for some students to move on after a breakup, leading to disruptions in their educational focus. In extreme cases, such an inability to deal with the adverse effects of “semester marriages” culminated in crimes of passion. The paper desists from pathologizing the “semester marriages” phenomenon and advocates for the strengthening of psycho-social support modalities within university settings to increase the accessibility and visibility of therapeutic services through a school social work model. Furthermore, universities, in partnership with other relevant stakeholders, are urged to prioritize sexual and reproductive education and services among the youth as provided for in the Constitution of Zimbabwe of 2013 to impart life skills that can equip students to make informed sexual and reproductive decisions.

Properly conducted assessment aims to help students build self-confidence and develop an attitude toward effective learning but it also aims to show teachers the right path to create new educational challenges for students. Assessing the youngest children is particularly difficult, especially when it is done in remote education. The aim of this article is to analyse and present the issue of verifying the knowledge and skills of students from early primary school (grades 1–3) during distance learning. The authors of the article conducted a qualitative study before the third schools’ closure in Poland due to the coronavirus pandemic. The research question asked in the article is: How were early primary students’ knowledge and skills verified in remote education? The findings focus on the specific forms and challenges in assessing the children’s work and progress, even indicating statements about the pointlessness of assessing the youngest students during remote learning. Online assessment of the pupils was problematic due to the limited computer skills of the youngest children and the need for their parents’ support. Teachers’ statements included opinions regarding the reliability of the assessment. It was recognised that the process was prone to a significant degree of cheating.

Hand grip strength
Opis:
Background The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of hand grip strength (HGS) test in identifying highly stressed individuals and to examine the effect of exercise and lifestyle on HGS and stress measures. Material and methods It is cross-sectional study. Students of the Medical University of Gdańsk, Poland were asked to fill out a questionnaire, undergo body composition analysis, perform HGS test and provide a saliva sample for cortisol measurement. Results Self-rated stress (SRS) was significantly higher in pre-clinical years (PCY) compared to clinical years (CY). HGS was significantly lower in PCY males than CY males. Participants who performed some form of exercise had significantly higher HGS compared with those who did not exercise. A positive correlation between HGS and BMI was noted. Students with low HGS were found to have lower levels of salivary cortisol (SC). However, there was no significant difference in SC levels between PCY and CY students. Conclusions HGS may be a reliable method of identifying stressed individuals and promoting healthy lifestyle behaviors. HGS testing is a safe, cheap and easy to perform method for a large number of participants while being time economical.

Background This study aimed to examine the prevalence of burnout, determine burnout-related factors, investigate resilience levels, and assess the relationship between burnout and resilience among physical therapy (PT) students at King Saud University (KSU) in Saudi Arabia. Material and Methods This cross-sectional study involved 153 PT students studying at KSU between January and March 2023. The participants completed an online questionnaire, a Maslach Burnout Inventory, and a Brief Resilience Scale. Results Low-to-moderate levels of Emotional Exhaustion (EE) were observed in 85% of the participants and high Depersonalization (DP) levels were reported by 34.2%. Female participants reported higher levels of EE and DP, whereas males had a greater prevalence of low Personal Achievement (PA) levels. Approximately 6.5% of the study participants reported high burnout levels (a combination of high DP, high EE, and low PA). Academic stress, followed by sleeping difficulties and changes in the academic year structure, were the most important factors contributing to higher levels of burnout (75.2%, 56.9%, and 43.8%, respectively). Most study participants around (66.0%) reported normal resilience levels. A significant correlation was detected between resilience and 2 domains of burnout (DP and PA), with the correlation being negative and weak for DP and positive and moderate for PA. Conclusions Overall, low-to-moderate levels of burnout were observed among the PT students who took part. Related factors that contributed to burnout were academic stress, sleeping difficulties, and academic year structure. A normal level of resilience was found to be significantly related to DP and PA but not to EE on the burnout subscales. Higher levels of resilience can be considered to play a protective role against burnout among PT students.

Opis:
RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The article describes the conditions, assumptions and benefits regarding the process of cooperation of the school with the family and the local community in the context of selected educational aspects. THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: The research questions were as follows: for what purpose should the school cooperate with the family and the local community, and what are the conditions for and the benefits of this cooperation? Analysis of scientific literature and analysis of existing data was used. THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: Referring to scientific studies, the key concepts for the analysis were defined descriptively and the meaning and conditions of multi‑stakeholder school cooperation were characterized in view of contemporary human needs in the context of lifelong education. RESEARCH RESULTS: The analysis shows that school is one of the most important social institutions to promote the ideas of continuous learning and the value of education. It provides education for knowledge society. The quality of education depends on the school’s openness to the family and community. Building a culture of cooperation requires partnership and involvement of everyone, an activity based on dialogue, shared goals and values and mutual benefits. CONCLUSIONS, RECOMMENDATIONS AND APPLICABLE VALUE OF RESEARCH: Education is not an individual activity, but a collective endeavor, and the changes in civilization generate new challenges in this area, so multi‑stakeholder cooperation of the school, family and local community is necessary, based on the identification of resources, needs and social capital of the actors, in order to meet the intellectual and moral challenges. Educational leaders – the school principal and teachers – play a key role here.
CEL NAUKOWY: W artykule dokonano opisu uwarunkowań, założeń i korzyści dotyczących procesu współpracy szkoły z rodziną i środowiskiem lokalnym w kontekście wybranych aspektów edukacyjnych. Kluczową rolę odgrywają tutaj przywódcy edukacyjni – dyrektor szkoły i nauczyciele.

Materiał i metody Badaniami objęto 127 nauczycieli i 173 studentów wychowania fizycznego. Zastosowano wystandaryzowane narzędzia kwestionariuszowe pozwalające ocenić poziomy zachowań zdrowotnych (Inwentarz zachowań zdrowotnych wg Juczyńskiego) i aktywności fizycznej (Międzynarodowy kwestionariusz aktywności fizycznej).
Background The level of health behavior of physical education teachers and people preparing to perform this profession is important from the point of view of the need to play the role of a health promoter – an authority in the promotion of health culture. The aim of the study was to assess the level of teachers’ health behaviors of physical education teachers and students, as well as to search for their determinants. Material and Methods The research covered 127 teachers and 173 physical education students. Standardized questionnaire tools were used to assess the level of health behaviors (Juczyński Health Behavior Inventory) and physical activity (International Physical Activity Questionnaire). Results Teachers demonstrate a higher level of health behaviors than students. Most respondents achieved an average level of the general health behavior index (HBI) (53.1% of teachers, 52.3% of students), while a high level – 26.8% of teachers, 19.8% of students and a low level – 19.9% of teachers and 27.7% of students. Female gender and teaching profession are significant predictors of HBI. Physical activity, both its current level and the level undertaken in the past, as well as the body mass index (BMI) do not determine HBI. In the regression model, physical activity is significantly associated with male gender, past sports activity and a lower BMI level. Conclusions Research indicates neglect in the general area of health behaviors among men, while among women, physical activity needs to be more widely popularized. The teacher education system should be more focused on the development of self-development competencies in the context of health-promoting behaviors.

Opis:
The mastery of teacher competencies is intrinsically linked to the quality of educational service (OECD, 2013). Consequently, the initial preparation of teachers and discourse on the competencies they should possess have long been focal points for educational researchers, predating even the Covid-19 pandemic (Caena, 2014). This discourse has intensified notably in recent times (UNESCO and UNICEF, 2021). A mixed methods approach is used in this study. First, a quantitative survey was used to create a descriptive and correlational analysis. Later, semi-structured interviews were utilized as a qualitative method to conduct some in-depth explorations. The quantitative part of study aims to explore the level of preparedness of students in Preschool and Elementary Education programs regarding mental health, the primary methods through which students acquire knowledge, and the relationship between this knowledge and their well-being throughout their teacher education journeys. The study sample comprised students from the Faculty of Education at the University “Aleksandër Moisiu”, Durrës, Albania (N=123), 19 of whom were interviewed to identify through qualitative methods the promoting factors and inhibiting factors of well-being and mental health during the study years. Based on the literature, a semi-structured interview instrument was prepared. For the quantitative data collection, two scales were developed for this study: one to gauge students’ perceived level of mental health knowledge and another to identify the sources of this knowledge acquisition. Student well-being was assessed using the self-assessment questionnaire CSSWQ (Renshaw, 2020). Data analysis was conducted using SPSS 22 software, while the qualitative data set was processed manually. According to the students’ self-reports, they demonstrated an above-average level of knowledge on mental health, deriving this knowledge from both the university’s curriculum and external sources. The study revealed weak positive correlations between mental health knowledge and academic efficacy (r = .024, n = 123, p < .008), but moderate positive correlations with academic satisfaction (r = .31, n = 123, p < .001), school connectedness (r = .31, n = 123, p < .001), college gratitude (r = .36, n = 123, p < .001), and student wellbeing (r = .34, n = 123, p < .001). Furthermore, this paper engages in discourse analysis to establish concrete recommendations for enhancing the relevant study programs.

Research objectives (aims) and problem(s): The aim of the article is to present the results of an evaluation study of an educational and preventive programme implemented in eight year 4 groups in six Krakow primary schools. The programme, entitled KOTWICA, ran from December 2021 to June 2022. The evaluation was external and comprehensive. During the programme, the evaluation of the process and of the outcome were carried out in the pre-test–post-test format. The research question is “what are the results of the evaluation of the KOTWICA educational and preventive programme for students of the fourth year of primary school?” Research methods: Eight proprietary tools were used to evaluate the process, and two standardised tools were used to evaluate the result. The collected material was subjected to statistical processing, whilst the qualitative data was encoded, categorised and analysed using tools for qualitative data analysis. Structure of the article: At the beginning, the authors justify the undertaking of the research and introduce the subject of the study on the basis of theoretical findings and the state of research in the field of school prevention. Then the research objectives are described and the research problem is defined. In turn, the research method, the selection criteria for the study group and the principles of data collection and processing are described. The results of the research and the limitations of the research process were also described. Finally, the conclusions of the research and recommendations for the theory and policy of school prevention are described. Research findings and their impact on the development of educational sciences: The results of the evaluation allow us to conclude that the objective of the educational and preventive programme conducted in year 4 was achieved and that it met the needs of the participants. However, they do not allow us to draw clear conclusions as to the effectiveness of the educational activities, due to the limitations of the collected research material. Conclusions and/or recommendations: In the light of the results, the authors drew conclusions regarding the methodology of evaluation studies and recommendations for preventive and educational practice.

Background Students of medical universities, future employees, will have an impact on the shaping healthcare system. It is important to know and understand their opinions on the factors affecting working conditions and, consequently, changes necessary to improve effectiveness of health care. Students’ expectations can contribute to the changing working conditions for graduates and bring added value to health system redefinition. Material and Methods The study used factor analysis to check whether its use was justified. Reliability analysis was performed and structure indicators were determined for each question. The anonymous survey was conducted from September 2017 until March 2018; 1205 students were randomly selected for the sample. Results Eighty percent of the students declared interest in healthcare changes, >50% reported that the main factors influencing the work were competencies, financing, medical equipment and organization. Over 90% of the respondents indicated too long wait times for an appointment with a specialist and admission to hospital as the reason for the low efficiency of healthcare, whereas >80% of the survey participants considered insufficient funding to be a barrier. The need for changing the financing scheme was underlined by >90% of the students, and of health priorities by about 80%. Approximately 71% of the respondents were in favour of limiting the role of government in decision-making processes and introducing changes into the education system. Conclusions Students’ views on organizational and financial factors of working conditions can contribute to improvement in systemic solutions at both micro and macro levels. Limiting the role of politicians in planning and implementing reforms can motivate employees to be more creative and decisive. Analysis of opinions can bring added value to health policy and systemic changes and should be extended by further research results after the COVID-19 pandemic. Students’ interest in healthcare reform encourages reflection on enriching education with managerial skills.

Opis:
The COVID-19 pandemic affected the methods and results of teaching, posed many challenges, and changed the approach to education, providing an opportunity to review and reconsider the pros and cons of different modes of education. The aim of the study discussed in the article is to determine the factors influencing students' preferences for taking different classes remotely or onsite. The data were obtained through a survey sent to the largest economics universities in Poland, which distributed the link to the survey among their students via email. The study was extended over the period from 4th November 2020 to 31st March 2021 and a total of 604 students took part in it. The authors compared the results relating to general and statistics courses, taking into account the following factors: efficiency, fatigue, concentration, students' activity, workload, quality of lecturers' preparation for classes and the materials used, as well as the availability of the teacher. Statistical methods were used for the analysis, including non-parametric tests and a generalised linear model (GLM). The respondents considered distance learning more complicated and time-consuming than onsite studying. Students were less active during online statistics courses, which were perceived as more tiring and less effective compared to general courses conducted remotely. The respondents declared a greater need for contact with the lecturers of general courses than the statistics ones. This was due to the lower quality of the provided teaching materials and lower availability of the lecturers of general courses. The ability to focus proved a decisive factor in the choice of the mode of courses in statistics. As regards general subjects, the choices were determined by the degree of fatigue.
Pandemia COVID-19 wpłynęła na sposób i wyniki nauczania. Postawiła wiele wyzwań, zmieniła podejście do edukacji i dała możliwość zweryfikowania zalet i wad różnych trybów kształcenia. W analizach zastosowano metody statystyczne, m.in. testy nieparametryczne i uogólniony model liniowy.

Opis:
Currently, the COVID-19 pandemic is the subject of many studies, analyses, and research considerations regarding all areas or areas of life. Its impact on the education sector is extensively analyzed as its occurrence has caused a revolution in various systems and levels of education. Previous publications on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the education sector most often concern issues related to the transition to online teaching or the extensive use of modern computer technologies that enable the entire teaching process. However, the impact of the pandemic on the motivation to learn, both positively and negatively, has not yet been examined. Considering the above, the article presents two groups of factors illustrating the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the motivation to learn. The conducted research and analyses made it possible not only to specifically identify these factors but also to identify significant differences depending on the adopted criteria. Based on the research, it can be concluded that the negative factors had a more substantial impact on the decrease in motivation than the positive factors.
