Opis:
The article concerns the policy of communistic authorities towards the private trade sector in the Lublin region between 1944 and 1954 (the policy was analogous in entire Poland), especially during so-called “the battle for trade”, the aim of which was a definite termination of the class of traders. The sovietisation of trade in post-war Poland, more commonly known as “the battle for trade” was one of the most principal nationwide undertakings by the pro-Stalinist communistic regime of that time managing Poland and appointed by Joseph Stalin, the purpose of which was the general sovietisation of the Republic of Poland before the country could finally join the structure of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. The prelude to sovietisation in the Lublin region occurred at the turn of 1946 and 1947. The climax took place between 1947 and 1948 and the period of decadence between 1949 and 1951, although it can be accepted that actually “the battle for trade” was going on until 1989 that is, until the time of political transformation in Poland and the return to the free-market economy. During the period of “the battle for trade”, as the result of repressive policy of the communistic authorities towards traders, the private trade sector almost entirely disappeared. The total termination of trade resulted in the fact that people in cities and the countryside lacked sufficient supplies of basic foodstuffs and industrial articles. Badly managed nationalized trade sectors, state-owned and cooperatives, were unable to provide the country with proper food supplies. The communistic regime and its incompetent economical policy caused chaos but attempted to soothe it by delivering basic foodstuffs and introducing the system of food ration coupons temporarily, which became the characteristic means of food distribution in the period of the People’s Republic of Poland.

Opis:
The implementation of socialism in North Korea required the large-scale involvement of women in economic relations. In order to align the rights of women and men in social life, the government pursued a policy of gender equality, conducting extensive advocacy among the female population aimed at a transformation of the understanding of women’s social roles and the nature of femininity. In the original context of women being encouraged to be workers and passionate contributors to the construction of the socialist state, the traditional stance on women as caring mothers and wives was supplemented with internationalist rhetoric on womanhood. However, with the transition to the Juche-oriented socialism, the discourse on women was modified, increasing the emphasis on motherhood and childrearing and reducing internationalism. Based on an analysis of the women’s magazine The Korean Woman (Joseon Nyeoseong), the present study analyses discourses on motherhood and childrearing in 21st century North Korea. The preliminary results of the research show that, while motherhood remains an essential component of the discourse on women, it is formulated in terms of building a powerful socialist state.

Opis:
The Transformation of Economic Imagery in Croatian Culture in the 1990sThe article problematizes the relationship between culture and capitalism in creating a specific economic imagery of the 1990s in the Croatian cultural space as part of the post-Yugoslav context. One of the assumptions in analysing the connection between economics, culture and literature is that different political and economic systems (such as socialism or capitalism) always represent a certain type of culture. It is necessary to have a certain type of culture that will introduce and legitimize certain political and economic systems, which inevitably means that at the same time, certain types of cultural practices will also appear that will challenge and question them. The analysis detects processes of intellectual dismantling and transformation of socialism and creating the foundation for a new "moral and affective economy" (Ahmed, Bowles) of capitalism on post-socialist terrain. The author focuses on three "cultural patterns" (Williams) from the sphere of consumer culture, everyday life, scientific, artistic and cultural literature, through which she follows symptomatic traces of creating, negotiating and opposing the hegemonic culture in early 1990s Croatia. Transformacija ekonomskog imaginarija u hrvatskoj kulturi 90-ih godina 20. stoljeća Članak problematizira odnos kulture i kapitalizma u kreiranju specifičnog ekonomskog imaginarija devedesetih godina u hrvatskom kulturnom prostoru kao dijelu postjugoslavenskog prostora.

Opis:
Socialism went down in history as a system developed to be the answer to the evils present in a capitalistic economy. However, many scholars rejected it from the start, pointing out the possible dangers of such an idea. Amongst them were Hilaire Belloc and G. K. Chesterton, prolific English authors of the early 20th century, and architects of the original economic system known as distributism. Writing from a Roman Catholic perspective, they stood as fierce defenders of Christian Civilization, were utterly disappointed with the social and economic reality of industrial capitalism. Nevertheless, they firmly refused to accept socialism as a remedy, stating that private ownership is a natural institution essential for maintaining human liberty. In this Article, the Author argues that socialism does not stand as a viable economic option, as it is a system that is, in its essence, in conflict with human nature. Moreover, every attempt at implementing its principles will not result in collectivism and social ownership, but in the further suppression of human rights and re-establishing The Servile State characteristic for the pagan past of European society.
Pisząc z perspektywy rzymskiego katolicyzmu i cywilizacji chrześcijańskiej, byli oni głęboko rozgoryczeni znanym im z doświadczenia industrialnym kapitalizmem.

Biographies of people with disabilities emphasising on their humanity and the value of this very special human experience may lead to questioning common assumptions about disability and people suffering from it. The article contains an attempt to challenge the myth of Keller as a “miracle child” by presenting her rich life and the most prominent aspects of her social and political activity.

Opis:
The aim of the article is not to criticise the dominant in Polish sociology of the late 1970s and the early 1980s concepts of social structure and dynamics but to outline proposals for further research and explanation. The first, author discusses the concepts of social structure, conflict and dynamics. The stress is on the activist and relationist concept of structure. Conflict is analysed in three dimensions: behavioral, psychological-attitudinal, and structural. Dynamics is also analysed in three dimensions: changes in the distribution of various social characteristics; social processes; and the stages of development of socialism. The second part discusses theoretical and methodological orientations in Polish macrosociology until the mid-1980s. The third chapter suggests that new research programs should take into account the following perspectives: 1) classic Marxian analysis of social structure, contradictions, and revolutions, 2) contemporary structural Western Marxism, 3) modern conflict theory, 4) critical theory of society, 5) conservative social theory stressing social costs of excessive role of the state, and 6) the elites theories.

The increasingly critical situation of the Jewish minority and the bankruptcy of the previously dominant political orientations within the Jewish community created a new set of opportunities for a group, the General Jewish Workers’ Alliance, or Bund which had played only a marginal role in both Polish and Jewish politics between 1920 and 1935. The growing strength of the Bund was clearly evident in the municipal elections of late 1938 and early 1939 which saw it emerge as the largest Jewish party in towns such as Warsaw, Łódź, Vilna and Białystok. This article seeks to evaluate the Bund’s reaction to its heightened importance in Jewish politics in Poland.

Opis:
On 20th of October 2009 died Leszek Nowak, one of the most creative and original Polish philosophers. Born on 7th of January 1943, Nowak studied law (Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznań) and philosophy (Warsaw University). He lived to philosophize. It is not a conventional phrase but the true description of his activities. He devoted his live to philosophy. He got professor’s title in 1976, at the age of 33. At that time he was the youngest professor in Poland and the author of the methodological conception – the idealizational theory of science. His theory was inspired by ideas he found in Marx’s writings. He made them explicit and precise by using the language of contemporary logical philosophy. The result was the theory that offered a new, detailed and systematic picture of science [10], [18]. Leszek Nowak admired Marx’s ideas and planned to reconstruct Marx’s entire philosophical system. It soon occurred to him that Marx’s social philosophy was unable to account for the functioning of the societies of so-called real socialism. Nowak retained Marx’s materialism but rejected the narrow, economic view of society. In 1977 he started to work on a new, generalized social theory, which he called the non-Marxian historical materialism [12]. In this theory real socialism occurs as the most oppressive system in the history of the hitherto known societies. One has to be bold or naïve to work on such a theory in the country of real socialism. Leszek Nowak was aware of the risk but he did not decide to accept intellectual compromise and in 1979 disseminated the typescript of his book on real socialism. During the time of Solidarność movement he spent all energy to educate union members and to reveal the oppressive nature of socialism. He was interned on 13th of December 1981 and spent a year in jail. In 1985 he was expelled from the university and in 1989 his professorship was reinstated. Extremely hard work, engagement in the Solidarność movement, and protests during internment seriously undermined his health. In the last years Leszek Nowak was not able to teach but he painstakingly worked on his new love – metaphysics. Results of his research were published in Polish in three volumes [16], [19], [20]. In our view his conception represents a non-standard approach to metaphysical problems. In Polish philosophy Nowak’s metaphysics can be only confronted with Roman Ingarden’s The controversy over the existence of the world. It is our firm conviction that Leszek Nowak’s place in Polish philosophy in the second half of the twentieth century is defined by the following qualities: a bold search for new and original idea, laborious work to present it in a systematic way, readiness to defend it against petrifying tendencies be they scientific, political, religious or ideological.
