The article explores urban social movements. It is the city that sets out stimulating strategies for building a social movement and forms of its activities and protest. The article is based on ethnographic studies conducted among activists from movements opposing neoliberalism, anti-corporate movements and the alter-globalist movement. Urban activities and protest tactics are treated as an emanation of their chief ideologies and means of articulating fundamental political postulates.

The main goal of the article is to identify the role of social and political movements and non-political forms of participating within a democratic system. Albania as a young democracy had been under organizational fragmentation. Albania has a stable political party system, but its society faces a chaotic development towards the democratization process. In this paper the main aim is to explain the role of social cleavages and social movements in a young democracy like Albania. The relationship between social movements and the political party system will be viewed from two perspectives: a) the relative openness or closure of the institutionalized political system; and b) how non-conventional forms of participation, such as a protest, can be part of policy-making. The paper is structured into two main parts, the first one deals with the theoretical approaches towards social movements and social cleavages and the second one relates to the Albanian perspective and its socio-political background.

The purpose of this article is to analyse the loss of validity in the principles of universality and equality that lead the international system of Human Rights, in the wake of the refugee crisis that arose in Europe in 2014. The main idea is that the massive arrival of refugees due to the violence in the Middle East revealed severe humanitarian contradictions in the European countries when providing the right to asylum, integration, acknowledgementand i ntercultural dialogue in favour of those affected by the war.T hrough an analysis of the debates that arose in Europe after the arrival of refugees to the continent, this article seeks to evidence the diminishmentin the social support to the values of freedom, international cooperation, multiculturalism and Human Rights; as well as an increase in the xenophobic and isolationist expressions. This work approaches the situation of Human Rights from the theoretical perspective of social movements, bearing in mind that the progressiveincorpor ation of these prerogatives in the national and international legal frameworks, has been encouraged by collective actions that generationally have managed to increase the repertoire of rights that protect human dignity. Nevertheless, the inconvenience now, is that regressive movements have begun to arise nowadays, threatening to move aside institutions that behold the ideal of a liberal and cosmopolitan democracy. To state evidence of such challenge, this work compiles the opinion of the European population in topics that refl ect their point of view on Human Rights. In this context, the research methodology was oriented to discourse analysis of online comments posted by readers of the newspapers with the highest circulation in six European countries, in relation to news that, because of their impact, appalled society and made them take part in the repercussions for their countries.

Over the last few years we may notice anarchist symbols and flags which appear in social movements in Armenia. This shows that anarchist organizations appear and are active there. So far they have not been the subject of scientific research as they are still small and not fully developed. However their more visible activity in social movements is the reason why this attitude has changed. In this paper I am trying to show what factors contribute to the development of the anarchist organization and its ideology on the territory of the former Soviet Union, i.e. Armenia, with the emphasis on how the anarchist ideology functions in social movements, their acti - vities and forms of representation in the Armenian society.

The emergence of Poland’s Komitet Obrony Robotników, KOR, is a challenge for social movement research whose concepts were mainly developed studying movements in Western democratic countries. The currently dominating structuralist rationalist approach tends to reduce protests to a strategic reaction to favourable opportunity structures. Although this approach offers an adequate evolutionary explanation for KOR’s success, it does not offer a convincing causal explanation for its emergence and the mobilization of activists. This article develops an alternative explanation, using concepts from theories of collective identity, american pragmatism, Émile Durkheim, and Max Weber.

The aim of this article is to analyze what values and ideas are crucial to the vision of urban development from the perspective of social urban movements in Poland. Five different values/ ideas were chosen to elaborate: inter-city solidarity, justice, culture instead of economy, sustainable development and participation. The paper tries to explore what these values might mean for urban activists and what are relations between these values and typical values of new social movements. Furthermore, the author hypothesizes that making some values more popular among, both “ordinary” habitants of the polish cities and local/ national government representatives, is one of the cultural consequences of urban movements in Poland. Researchers who aims to observe and understand changes in human consciousness should conduct empirical studies on urban movements, firstly, to verify which values are declared and put by them into practice in daily urban life, and secondly, to find out what priorities urban activists assign to these values. Conclusions and hypotheses in the article were given on the basis of: 1. The secondary data analysis of Urban Movements Congress website and Urban Movements Agreement website; 2. An observation of the actions of urban activists on the national level; 3. Empirical studies conducted by the author in 2011 among participants of the “Social Movement Respect for Lodz” – local activists from Lodz in Poland.

The aim of this article is to explain the characteristics on current History teaching proposed into the curriculum of primary education in Chile under the present social process. We employ Raymond Williams cultural materialism and specifically his categories on cultural products to apprehend the curriculum and link it to the context where it is pro duced. To do so, we use the historical method, and considering pedagogical and didactical elements. The documental corpus analyzed is conformed by the official documents guiding education but also other historical sources coming from the current political situation. The results on this analysis show that there is a curricular dichotomy between traditional history teaching based on events of national history and learning by rote and, current didactical proposals, which tend to develop historical thinking. This situation reflects the political tension on social demands and the institutional longstanding objectives for education.

While offline iterations of the climate activism movement have spanned decades, today online involvement of youth through social media platforms has transformed the landscape of this social movement. Our research considers how youth climate activists utilize social media platforms to create and direct social movement communities towards greater collective action. Our project analyzes narrative framing and linguistic conventions to better understand how youth climate activists utilized Twitter to build community and mobilize followers around their movement. Our project identifies three emergent strategies, used by youth climate activists, that appear effective in engaging activist communities on Twitter. These strategies demonstrate the power of digital culture, and youth culture, in creating a collective identity within a diverse generation. This fusion of digital and physical resistance is an essential component of the youth climate activist strategy and may play a role in the future of emerging social movements.

The Citizen of Science
Opis:
Changes of university should not be a result of administrators’ and university managers’ decisions (as a top-down approach), but of initiatives caused by academic community. These engaged initiatives may take a different forms – associations, foundations, membership in academic committees, as well as different kinds of new social movements. An example of such a social movement are Obywatele Nauki (the Citizens of Science). Its members are young (usually post-docs), as well as more experienced scholars, who – despite the fact of achieving scientific and academic success – are working for the common good and the good of the university seen as an important social institution. Thus the Citizens of Science propose and encourage other scholars to seek constructive and parallel solutions, that, on the one hand, will respect the cultural, social, economic roots building the identity of the university, and, on the other hand, that will have will to use the vitality of young academic. There are three main possibilities of interpretation of the activity of the movement. First of all, these are the modern conceptions of social movements (Gorlach, Mooney 2008; Krzeminski 2013; Sztompka 2010; Żuk 2001; Touraine 2010, 2011, 2013), analyzing measures in the dimension of macro, meso and microstructure. Another important interpretation path is a reference to the history of Social Solidarity Movement (Touraine 2010, 2011, 2013; Ost 2007; Staniszkis 2010; Koczanowicz 2009). The third possibility of interpretive is theory of performative democracy (Matynia 2008; Austin 1993; Searl 1980, 1987), which is a particular dimension of public life, what creates an alternative to the undemocratic, unjust practices of power.

Opis:
Partly as a result of compartmentalized academic specializations and history teaching, in accounts of the global upheavals of 1968, Native Americans are either not mentioned, or at best are tagged on as an afterthought. “Was there a Native American 1968?” is the central question this article aims to answer. Native American activism in the 1960s was no less flashy, dramatic or confrontational than the protests by the era’s other struggles – it is simply overshadowed by later actions of the movement. Using approaches from Transnational American Studies and the history of social movements, this article argues that American Indians had a “long 1968” that originated in Native America’s responses to the US government’s Termination policy in the 1950s, and stretched from their ‘training’ period in the 1960s, through their dramatic protests from the late 1960s through the 1970s, all the way to their participation at the United Nations from 1977 through the rest of the Cold War. While their radicalism and protest strategies made Native American activism a part of the US domestic social movements of the long 1960s, the nature of American Indian sovereignty rights and transnationalism place the Native American long 1968 on the rights spectrum further away from civil rights, and closer to a national liberation struggle-which links American Indian activism to the decolonization movements of the Cold War.

Maidan Nezalezhnosti in Kiev is not just a geographic location, the city’s central square, but an area of freedom etched on the topography of the Ukrainian collective memory, an element of the symbolic resources on which today’s Ukrainian identity is founded. The concept of “Maidan” is filled with rich symbolic content. Maidan has become a social, political, ethical and religious category. Ukrainian revolution, Crimean crisis, separatist aspirations in Donetsk and Lugansk show how complicated the nation-building processes in Ukraine are. The role of Maidan in shaping citizenship among the competitive strategies of identity is worth noting. The question arises if a modern political nation was born in Maidan. Referring to my own observations made in Kiev in January and February 2013, the Ukrainian media coverage and numerous conversations with residents of Kiev, I would like to point to Kiev’s Maidan as a symbol in contemporary collective identity of Ukrainians.

The issue of culture, while present in the Polish scholarship on the Solidarity movement, remains untheorized. Explorations of culture in the literature are largely descriptive rather than explanatory in nature. In this article, I examine the opportunities that arise when we assume a cultural theoretical perspective in the sociological study of social movements. I focus primarily on the available definitions of culture and their relevance to the problem. I consider the role of culture from three perspectives: first, as the cause of the social movement’s emergence; second, as the movement’s internal organizing structure; and third, as a consequence of the movement. The issues discussed in this essay will be related both to the current state of the theory as well as the ongoing and potential studies of the Solidarity movement, thus providing an illustration to the subject at hand and paving the way for research on other Polish movements. The article concludes with a discussion of the benefits and drawbacks of the cultural approach in the sociology of social movements and considers its place within the scope of the Polish research on the subject.

There is a strong conviction about social radicalism carrying serious threats to the public spere, similiar to all manifestations of extremism, fundamentalism and other extreme attitudes. Meanwhile, subject literature indicates how misleading such interpretations are and deviate from the complex nature of this phenomenon. Various examples of the concept of radicalism understood as philosophical, psychological and social predicament, reviewed in this article, should lead to a necessary revision of the dominant conventional interpretation of radicalism.

Opis:
This paper constitutes an analysis of urban movements, marked in the research as alternative groups and civil organisations, in terms of the new politics characteristic of new social movements. In particular it indicates that these movements, ostensibly urban, actually express demands towards the broader social system, delegitimating it in a twofold manner.  Firstly, the acceptance of certain general principles in democratic values and rules is coupled with criticism of how the system functions in practice and of the political elites in Poland, via protest, lobbying, and watchdog activities. A separate type of delegitimation embraces organisations among which we may list cooperatives and squats, as well as organisations managing concrete spaces and withdrawing from participation in public life, shutting themselves away within autonomous spaces and realising a different cultural and democratic model. In both of these groups we are thus dealing with a strongly accentuated anti-systemic and anti-capitalist attitude towards the political reality of the period of transformation in Poland. The research delivered confirmation of the overall research hypothesis adopted in the Lifewhat project, according to which in response to economic crisis civil society responds with the emergence of alternative forms of resilience, not only alleviating the consequences of the crisis but which also, as time passes and the scale of their activities increases, may give rise to a new quality – including in a political sense. The research constitutes a part of the international Lifewhat project. It was conducted on a sample of eighteen purposefully selected civil groups and organisations operating in large cities in Poland, using the method of in-depth interviews.

This article is an attempt to link the attributes of “Solidarity” with the movement’s place in the theory of social movements. The evolutionary paradigm has left a gap with respect to selection and systematisation of these movements. The historical approach must be adopted in order to fill in this gap. It is therefore necessary to focus on “Solidarity” as a special case in the context of the history of nation, within the framework of the totalitarian macro-formation produced by the solutions adopted after World War II. “Solidarity’s” contribution was not limited to one country only. It also helped to trigger more general transformation and globalisation processes. The rationality of “Solidarity” is rooted in systemic contingencies which required the development of an effectivemethod-sit-in strikes-but also negotiations with the regime. However, the democratic culture rooted in national tradition was the decisive factor. In the West, the state was already being viewed as an obsolete form, whereas the lesson which was learned from the Polish experience was that the sovereign state is essential for reform and modernisation. The validity of this lesson was confirmed in practice. The author argues that “Solidarity” did not fit into the schematic distinction between “old” and “new” movements. Class interests were not a priority, neither were the interests of minorities, as they are in the West.

Opis:
The article aims to investigate the relationship between the Bolivian military government, established after a coup in 1964, and social movement, in special unionized workers in mining and rural areas. The way labor movements in the mining sector have been persecuted contrasts heavily with the support shown by peasant organizations, held by the promise of land redistribution in the rural area. However, the way the military have associated the fulfillment of the agrarian reform to the repression of popular radicalism poses a different perspective from those upheld by the originators of the reform, the government of the 1952 National Revolution. The manner social movements, due to the major role they played on the episode, came to be included in political calculation had resulted on a complex, and continuous, process of negotiation among social identities. Approaching this process as an historical object through a relational outlook, instead of reducing it to the Cold War conjunctural framework, allows us to address the articulations drawn by social actors, regarding the terms on how they may be seen or heard inside the public debate.

In this study I explore the use (and the non-use) of ICTs in the broad survey on their use by modern social movements, providing data on the demographics of the movements and their activists worldwide, and on the use (and non-use) of the ICTs. Based on four online surveys (including international, local US and Polish), data on distribution of social movement organizations, age of organizations and activists, numbers of activists and supporters, and organization goals are presented. Analysis of the diffusion and use of specific new ICTs follows. The research questions revolve around the blurring boundaries between members and non-members (unofficial supporters and volunteers) and the specifics of the use of new media (by whom and for what) with particular focus on the importance of organizational and membership age. The findings with regards to the use of modern ICTs show the success (wide diffusion and estimates of empowerment) of email, static websites, phones and social networking, contrasted with the relatively poor performance of blogs, podcats and online petitions on the social movement scene.

Opis:
How do activists manage life commitments and membership in a radical social movement organization? Starting with the assumption that activists are ‘more than activists’ who have personal lives that can affect their movement lives, I use identity theory to analyze how competition among identities influences participation in the organization to which they belong. I also assess how the collective identity of a revolutionary socialist organization affects the personal identities of activists. This movement identity is labeled ‘socialist identity’ which must then compete with other identities that the activist may possess. The methods used were modified life history interviews of former and current members, participant observations, and content analysis of the organization’s documents.

The aim of the article was to present origins and activity of city movements, such as smart city in Podkarpacie. Their initiators, both in Rzeszów and Mielec were local politicians, members of Sojusz Lewicy Demokratycznej (Democratic Left Alliance), and the newly created party assumed cross-party profile, associating first and foremost young people. The main aim of Rzeszów Smart City as well as Mielec Smart City was to stimulate active citizenship, intelligent development, and in case of Rzeszów, it was also political activity. It was indicated not only by coining on Facebook the flagship slogan ‘We will not hand over the city to PiS’, but also the public declaration of Konrad Fiołek as the candidate for the post of the Mayor of Rzeszów in pre-term elections’. The analysis was done with regards to non-party political players and it was evaluated whether the newly-formed city movements comprise a modern social initiative, or rather party activity under changed name.

The paper presents similarities and differences in the perception of women's problems on the present Polish labour market by leaders of old and new social movements (i.e., trade unions and women's organisations respectively). Based on the qualitative research conducted in 2010-2011 in Silesia, the paper focuses on the issue of mutual perception of union leaders in trade industry and female leaders in women's organisations. It also analyses factors facilitating the integration of the both movements and their actual cooperation so far and emphasises the potential of their synergic cooperation.

The article includes a critical review of the existing one-sided theories of Solidarity movement in Poland. On that base the author draws an outline of a new, multidimensional approach. The proposed theory is intended as a synthesis of the main axiological and pragmatic threads which are to be found in the debate about Solidarity as well as in the sociological theories of social movements.

Abstract: The article concerns the problem of the processes of the formation and development of Polish urban social movements. In the first part of the article, the author analyses historical background of urban social movements in Europe and structural changes among contemporary social movements. The second part is devoted to the specificity of social activism in Polish cites. The author analyses the transformation processes of dispersed urban social activism into urban social movement, represented by such organization as the Congress of Urban Movements as well as the electoral coalition: the Alliance of Urban Movements.
