The transition from industrialism to informationism, and the creation of a global economy, a new type of society and culture, starts a new phase of development, related to the revolution of information technologies and knowledge-based economy. The world is entering a new era, an information era generated by the information technology revolution and the rapid development of science and education. On our eyes we can see the rising global network society, completely opened to social communication of virtual communities, accepting cultural diversity, creating its own rules of social life, transnational, democratic, pictorial and audiovisual, collecting and processing information, working, paying bills online, investing, absorbing specialists with high digital and communication skills. All this poses new unimaginable challenges to education on a global scale, as it is faced with absolutely new demands and tasks, expressed by the global economy, multinational corporations, virtual culture, national values and the tensions of globalization.

Social paradigms exists, in the tradition of social sciences, as narrow theoretical and research fields, but they hope to expand beyond their original scope leading to scientific recognition. The author analyzes the nature of paradigms and their usefulness in the era of social change. In final part of the article, the author comes to the conclusion that social sciences researchers should use complimentary explanations instead of applying traditional paradigms.

The research project deals with the current issue of precarity, its mechanisms, risks, effects, coping strategies as well as coping competences and addresses the impact of work-based insecurities, rising social inequalities within and across nations, with a specific regional focus on South Tyrol - a multicultural, rural area in northern Italy, bordering with Austria. Finally, it is important to identify possible innovative solutions for the labour market, Human Resources strategies and social policies. The concept of work will be related to all securitized fundamental rights, their socialization context, the global change of values and the social change in the welfare state. The recent transformation from discourses on inequality and poverty towards social exclusion and inclusion indicates a conceptual shift in the societal management of social inequalities. The global financial crisis has highlighted the connectedness between corporate and household risk behaviour and management, and their socially inequitable effects. The interdisciplinary view enables a focus on multiple insecurities and how they interact to produceprecarious work relations, in reference to working conditions and the experience of social exclusion, the links between de-regulation, liberalization and the individualization of employment risks, but also the development of interest representation and social organizations for supporting labour market outsiders. The paper describes the current process of defining the research design, preliminary reflections for the case study and shows first outcomes of the project.

The aim of the study was to compare two groups of volunteers who work with people with disabilities: volunteers working in organizations led by social innovators and volunteers who are not affiliated to such organizations. The results show a different picture of both groups in the area of the declared value, objectives and attitudes towards people with disabilities. Volunteers working with social innovators have lower rates of misanthropy, higher individual indicators of social capital, and a higher rate of partnership and innovative attitude. The paper presents guidelines how to work with people with disabilities to maximize their integration into society and create social change.

Every innovation has social dimension, because it engages social players and its users (societies) at time of forming. Innovations are inscribed into social change. “We cannot think separately about innovations (items, artefacts) and people. They are coupled with each other, and innovation does not have any objective power for changing common activities and effects, unless it is told in an attracting manner, it is explained, introduced into use” (Giza – Poleszczuk 2013, p. 70). Without philosophical and humanistic study on learning the directions of development for contemporary society, we would not be capable for proper assessment or even description of social and cultural changes in larger extent, in which innovation is only small fragment, but simultaneously a significant one. (cf. Beck 2002; Castells 2008; Florida 2010; Giddens 2001) (after Bukowski A., Rudnicki S., Strycharz J., 2012, p. 19). The article delivers an extensive view on the genesis and development of civil society in Taiwan, and presents the results of the analysis of a role that civil society in Taiwan plays in the shaping of institutional order, co-governance (local and national), the intermediation and representation of the individual (also summed in group interest) as well as the public interest in relation to the other actors of the social system (the state, the market and family). Taiwanese socio-political transformation is a model example of the transition from authoritarian rule into a democratic system. Conglomeration of socio-economic prerequisites lays as the basis for specific political culture of Taiwanese society, which not only has a significant impact on the participation of different groups of citizens in the public sphere, on their position in the social and civil dialogue, but primarily on their relationships with state institutions.

Modern civilization changes have pointed out the necessity of redefinition of basic mechanisms that create the public space. When it comes to defining problems, the first idea generally, is to announce „the end” of certain values. So as it is claimed, there has already been the end of the history and the end of human. We are also experiencing the end of politics at the moment. However, the praxis sphere cannot disappear. It is the sphere of human activity that politics belong to. In this context, the necessity of arranging and organizing the public space would not also disappear. New standards for political actions are desirable. There is a new model of power, a new model of society, a new model of communication and a new model of symbolic narration and role of the politician – hypocrite. What is more, reflection upon reality determines the nature of changes and supports creating process of political tools, identification of new, political rationality – based on its well known standards. The article is an attempt to pre-reflection indicating a need for recognition of the present, methateoretical, broad contexts, as well as combining the past and present experiences.

The article discusses how to research the impact of migration on social change in sending countries, without using a development studies framework. It argues for greater attention to the lives of ‘stayers’. A comprehensive approach to migration impact should begin by using mainstream sociological research to identify overall social trends in the origin country, before considering migration as one determinant of change. The case study is social remittances in contemporary Poland. Social remittances are understood to include not just foreign ideas, but also those resulting from migrants’ reflections on their own changing lives. One way to investigate how such social remittances ‘scale up’ to create cultural change is to consider the meso-level of regional migration culture. Taking the example of changing gender roles, I discuss Polish sociological and migration scholarship before presenting my own quantitative and qualitative data on stayers’ opinions about maternal migration. I show how stayers in regions with high levels of migration can become persuaded to condone maternal behaviour which is at odds with traditional views on gender roles and the importance of the extended family. Migration cultures are, however, not so visible in other parts of Poland or in Polish cities. The final part of the article employs the concept of migration sub-cultures – pockets of migration exposure and expertise among particular social groups. Examining the case of Wrocław, a prosperous city which might appear to be untouched by migration influences, I argue that such sub-cultures are probably more prevalent than might be assumed.

This article discusses the question of the emergence of new forms of collective identities brought about by the recent social and cultural changes and their influence on Polish national identity. Specifically, it attempts to analyse those evolutionary changes which have been transforming the character of this identity from an exclusive, ethnic model towards a pluralistic, civic one. The article aims to show that the most significant agent of these processes is a new urban middle class whose growing role in the Polish society challenges traditional national discourses. The article advances a thesis that we are witnessing an emergence of a new platform of identification which significantly blurs the overwhelming contours of traditional national identity and instead strengthens on the one hand local identification and on the other, a cosmopolitan one.

The refugee crisis and the rising number of asylum seekers is one of the primary concerns of the EU. Political discussions reflect humanitarian, social and economic implications of the constant influx of new asylum seekers coming mainly from Syria. Within the political sphere in the V4 countries it is possible to observe negative attitudes. In this context, it is very important to emphasize that we are living in a democratic society, where media represent the role of democracy guardians. On the other hand, social media offer space for expression to the general public opinions, and their potential is also fully exploited by political leaders. The potential of social media must be perceived also against the backdrop of risks stemming mainly from disinformation and manipulative tendencies. In order to identify and clarify the presence of manipulative techniques in the communication of political and social groups to the attitudes of Generation Y in the sphere of migrant tolerance we present some introductory findings under the scope of project VEGA 1/0192/18.

Our article considers social remittances and social change in Central and Eastern Europe. We show how migration scholarship can be embedded into the wider study of social processes and relations. ‘Social remitting’ sometimes seems to be little more than a slippery catchphrase; however, this article defends the concept. If it is defined carefully and used cautiously, it should help the researcher to think about what, in addition to money, is sent from one society to another and exactly how, thus shedding light on important and insufficiently studied aspects of migration. A close-up view of the processes by which ideas, practices, norms, values and, according to some definitions, social capital and social skills are transferred by migrants across international borders helps researchers to understand more precisely how migration contributes to social change or, in some cases, prevents it from occurring. Our article reviews some of the most interesting arguments and findings presented recently by other scholars and discusses aspects of social remitting which particularly interested us in our own research. The context of our research is social change in Poland: we attempt to understand how migration has contributed to wider patterns of social change since 1989 and exactly how it intertwines with other social trends and globalisation influences. This entails a careful focus on both structural conditions and agency and therefore on social remittances.

I am planning to focus on the impact of the mass media on the awareness and an everyday life of the Japanese people. Besides, I am going to consider the extent as to which the new environment has been transformed by the information revolution. For my research I shall use the contemporary cinema which perfectly reflects cultural issues of the nation in the process of the vehement social change, and which shows the hopes and fears of the future.

Opis:
According to the System Justification Theory by Jost Banaji people are motivated to defend existing social arrangements, often at the expense of their personal and group interests. It can be seen in legitimation of the status quo, out-group favoritism and in increased system justification among members of groups that are most discriminated by that system. Although large body of research supports this theory, there is also growing evidence that the motivation to justify the system is not universal for all societies. In the following paper author discusses differences in need for system justification between citizens of countries with a long tradition of capitalism and citizens of post-communist countries and their possible political implications.

Cultural institutions become more and more open to the implementation of inclusive projects aimed at a large and constantly expanding group of recipients-creators. The potential of amateur creativity has also been noticed in the field of theater activity, and thus the understanding of art as a sphere in which only professional artists have a voice has been surpassed. The idea of a theater devoted to children's imagination was anticipated in Poland by a patron of theatre pedagogy, Jan Dorman. Children's theater, drawing on the natural creativity of a child, the unlimited potential of his imagination and the tendency to play, places in the center of the creative process a child, who is not only a performer or spectator, but a committed author of activities – theatrical events. Playing the theater becomes a space for the child's participation, in which his voice has the driving force. Through art, creating an imaginary world, and thus moving in the world of fiction, the young artist develops skills that are necessary for full participation in real social life. Socially engaged theater is based on the assumption that art can be a common act because it is a dialogical meeting in which everyone can express themselves. Theater provokes both reflection and action, it presents a creative dialogue between man and the world. Art understood in this way transcends its aesthetic function, focusing on the process that its creators go through and the change it causes, which goes far beyond the theatrical event. The Girls' „Theater of Power” is an example of theatrical work in which the participation of girls was at the core of all activities. By following the creative potential and unlimited imagination of children, it became possible to get to know their worlds and learn sensitivity to the environment from them. The girls reflected on the school reality and, using the tools of the theater, created an alternative „School for Children”. As a result of this cooperation, the voices of the participants were manifested in a project of the world which was not only directed at children but also created by children.

When a literary work is conceived, it demonstrates the fact that a writer is sensitive to the world around him or her and thus, his or her work bear the responsibility of creating an impact positively on that society. This paper arises from this fact and exemplifies how Amma Darko is socially committed to shaping the moral conscience of contemporary African society using her novels – The Housemaid and Faceless. Using social theory as a theoretical bearing, the paper analyses the novels and discovers that Amma uses especially her characters and settings as forces to create a social transformation in contemporary African society.

Opis:
The article is devoted to the social margin's role in the process of social change. The author aims at defining the concept of marginality and suggesting a typology of social marginality on the basis of social and cultural criteria. She distinguishes social marginality, cultural marginality and socio-cultural marginality. Additionally, she describes psychological marginality as a separate type. Social marginality is typical of people sharing larger society's values but performing only irregular functions in this society. Cultural marginality is characteristic of a group whose values are different than these of the larger society but which performs regular functions in this society. The author emphasizes the potential for incurring change that marginal groups possess: this potential could result in creative impulses or in destruction depending on the configuration of marginality and historical context. The following adaptive reactions of a marginal group could be distinguished: conformism, innovation, ritualization, retreatism or rebellion.

Presently, Małopolska voivodeship is the core of the south-eastern region of the country. Małopolska during the last two centuries experienced numerous political and administrative changes, including the period after the Second World War. In the times of the partitions, Małopolska was overcrowded, poor and economically backward region. During the interwar period the situation improved but the economic crisis of the 30's led to mass unemployment and to significant deterioration in the living conditions of families, what is reflected in the memoirs written by the inhabitants of the province of Kraków. They were published in the classic work, „Memoirs of the Unemployed" edited by Ludwik Krzywicki. The experience of unemployment during the years of the Great Depression was confronted with descriptions of inactivity in the first decade of the system transi-tion. The subjective world of the unemployed was supplemented with quantitative data showing changes in the labour market in the voivodeship. The comparison of contemporary diaries and those written before 80 years have revealed differences in the institutional support of the health care and social assistance and the similarities in the experience of unemployment.

Opis:
The aim of this article is to provide an empirical test of the model of non-economic transfers by migrants such as values, attitudes, behaviours, lifestyles, transnational social networks, know-how, skills and knowledge. The first part of the article discusses the current state of Polish society, identifies the direction of social change in Poland since 1989 and analyses the mutual dependency between social change and migration. The second section offers the analytical model and describes how existing empirical data from official statistics and research reports as well as the author’s own research projects have been analysed. The crucial element of the model is the notion of ‘closure’, defined as any factor that makes the migrants’ non-economic transfers difficult or impossible. Within each of the three categories of closure – socio-economic, cultural and psycho-social – more specific barriers to non-economic transfers are tested, e.g., lack of cohesive policy towards return migrants, social narratives on migration or ‘homecomer syndrome’. The analysis leads to the conclusion that, however difficult the measurement of the impact of return migration on social change at this stage, return migrants’ transfers are accelerating the process of social change in Poland towards the model of well-developed, post-modern Western societies, whereas closures impede this process.

In theMestizo and urban cultures of contemporary Mexico, motherhood is a site of confrontation of various gender (hegemonic, subordinate and alternative) images, practices and discourses. The local pattern of motherhood is undergoing social change, determined by traditional gender ideology, the government’s modernization policy, and the agency of ordinary men and women. This text is based on a field study which I conducted in a district of Mexico City in 2005/2006. I analyze the process of reconstruction of official motherhood ideology and mothering practices on three levels: the official cult of motherhood and state activity, local celebrations of Mother’s Day in the studied community, and women’s individual strategies. These strategies are expressed in the adaptation of the baby shower, an American custom, to local conditions. This adaptation has led to the development of a hybrid cultural form. It is also the site of women’s resistance to the state-supported, hegemonic cult of motherhood.

Objectives of the study: The quest to establish how skits and comic illustrations have made an impact through healthy learning for social change prompted this study that focuses on students of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, (RUGIPO) Ondo State. As a result, the research questions that guided this study were: what is RUGIPO students’ extent of exposure to skits programs and educational comic illustrations? What are the health benefits of their exposure to comedy skits and comic cartoons? What is the impact of skits and comic illustrations on the students’ lifestyles, and lastly, what are the similarities and differences in the two media that determine their transmedia rendering components. Research method: The method used in this study is essentially a survey method, which is crucial for obtaining opinions from the target population. A descriptive research approach was also used in clarifying essential concepts. A brief description of the context: Transmedia storytelling is narration across multiple media, each contributing to the story; in that regard, it becomes innovative. Skits with comic illustrations are forms of media that can be used in the teaching process. Their core component is humor, very popular in Nigeria, which is experiencing all forms of social problems, also evident in academia. Social learning theory, developmental media theory and the Socio-Ecological Model are the theoretical frameworks adopted in this study. They are based on the media and also rooted in psychology and sociology, thereby forming a background to ground the findings of the study. Research findings: The findings revealed there is a great shortage of local transmedia production, while the development of transmedia narratives is a complex creative exercise from a technical point of view. However, the more students read and watch humorous content through skits and comic illustrations, the more they learn how to interact in their peer groups. Skits and comic illustrations as a form of media remain influential. Conclusions and recommendations: Both skits and comic illustrations rely on humor. The study therefore explained that when exposed to both, the health benefits are psychological and enhance mental health. Among other things, it suggested that the National Orientation Agency of Nigeria should adopt transmedia storytelling as a strategic tool to enhance their sensitization campaigns. Creators of skits and comic illustrations are also advised to consider native  transmedia productions for wider reach and positive social change.

Opis:
Inclusive education is a vision of school based on the process of changing social attitudes, embodying categories like inclusion, equality, respect and tolerance towards others. It seems strictly connected with supporting intellectual autonomy of students in the processes of reconstruction of the existing cultural experience, which is significant for the process of (self) transformation, (self) creation of society. Focusing on the possibility of implementing this task, the center of the analyses are teachers’ and students’ competences - adaptive versus reconstructive. The article considers the tensions between the theoretical interpretation and the regulations on the standard of teaching preparation for the teaching profession resulting from the latest Regulation of the Minister of Science and Higher Education of July 25, 2019 [Journal of Laws of 2019, item 1450], legislative and organizational solutions outlined in the document “Education for All – Framework for Legislative and Organizational Solutions for High-Quality Inclusive Education for All Learners” [2020], developed by the Team for the development of a model of education of pupils with special educational needs established by the Minister of National Education. The subject of the review is what education offers in the sphere of creating students' emancipatory potential to question the explicitness of the cultural message in reference to the issue of teachers' competences, teachers' personal knowledge and the meanings teachers ascribe to the teaching requirements.

Old themes, like neo-liberal politics, economy and ideology, as well as the lost welfare state were very important for the scholars. Critical approach became a standard way of analysis of politics, economy and society, but also of political sciences, economics and sociology. Criticism was not only “negative.” For many speakers and discussants, the recent crises have been a chance to re-evaluate the former institutional arrangements and outline new, more flexible solutions.

One of the constitutive assumptions for Marx and Engels’ thought was to criticise the Enlightenment’s idea of revolution in school education. This education, which was an elite right in their time, did not become an object of independent reflection. The workers’ movement identified it with self-education. Intelligence with schooling. The development of schooling pushed towards the transfer of political struggle to the school. Educational policy in countries ruled by authoritarian parties appealing to Marxism and in countries where movements appealing to Marxism had an impact on education became a new problem. The current profound crisis of these phenomena makes us ask questions about the logic of their development and the reasons for the current breakdown.

The article is related to the issues of values appreciated by modern youth. Nowadays, it is particulary essential, when we a move from traditional societies towards post-modern ones as well as rapidly changing and unpredictable reality. In 2018, I conducted a research to find out the values appreciated by today's youth. A group of 372 high school students from the Podkarpackie province participated in my research. I used the diagnostic survey method and the survey technique. The values of health and happiness as well as freedom and independence take the most important place. This condition seems understandable in the development of youth and democracy. Family and work are also extremely important in the respondents' lives, which may be a result of market economy impact. What is more, the high positions are taken by education and education background. The values declared by young people are optimistic. However, it should be remembered that the value system may undergo changes. As a result, they should be followed due to the fact that economic, scientific and technical progress of the country will depend on the moral state of young people in the near future.
Zastosowałam metodę sondażu diagnostycznego i technikę ankiety.

Canons in education are social projects nested in a dynamic national tradition. Social and cultural changes as well as challenges of globalization result in changes of educational canons. Challenges of Polish transformation as well as requirements of the future enforce modifications of the current Polish canon of the romantic origin. The suggested changes are following: 1) changes in the meaning: transition from the ethnic meaning of “a nation” category to the civic one; 2) transition from the politics of a cultural domination to the politics of pluralism; 3) transition from communitarian democracy towards liberal democracy; 4) developing of a global, European, civic and intercultural dimensions in education; 5) redefining categories of “patriotism” and “the patriotic education”. The aforementioned changes should apply however evolutionary approach reinterpreting and modifying the contents of the current educational canon.

Sustainable development constitutes a paradigm which is to respond to the risks of our times (environmental, social and economic ones). It is based on the necessity to use resources in a way which will not deprive future generations of them. Such a development seeks to improve the quality of life of the community while maintaining social equality, diversity and the wealth of natural resources. It can be perceived as a broader social change which Jeremy Rifkin called “the third industrial revolution”, and whose symptoms can be seen today. Within the scope of this concept, there is the social entrepreneurship that, through the market activities, focuses on the social mission. Such a mission may concern a number of issues, such as social re-integration, fighting exclusion, or environment protection. Taking into account the importance of human resources, the social capital and economic efficiency of these enterprises and simultaneously focusing on environmental efforts, constitute a practical dimension of the sustainable development in local communities. One of the social cooperatives operating in the Opole voivodship is a good example here.

Opis:
The article is a critique of the approaches in Polish sociology at the turn of 1980s that attempt to study social consciousness through social structure. These approaches are coined 'social structure and attitudes' by the author. He claims that these approaches do not allow reconciling the research on the role of social actor with the analysis of wider trends of society writ large. This results in the inability to account for the mechanisms of social change. The existing approaches describe social structure in Poland as passive and incapable of shaping culture. They do not explain what are the mechanisms linking attitudes and social structure. Referring to Weber's sociology, the author suggests that the crystallization of ethos groups in Polish society can be recognized as one of the structuring processes. Taking several exemplary ethos groups (Catholics, counter-culture movements and democratic opposition) as an example, the author considers their potential role in the process of social change.

Opis:
The article stems from the research conducted in 1963 and aimed at establishing the hierarchy of prestige and attractiveness of Polish cities and towns by means of the poll, in which urban dwellers were asked to choose 4 Polish cities or towns, which they think are worth of recommending to foreign visitors. Studying both the resulted hierarchy and the opinions explaining the choice of particular city or town, the author comes to the conclusion that the assessment of a city's or town's prestige is independent of its administrative role and size. The particular criteria of evaluation suggest that the hierarchy is a phenomenon that emerged after the war. The opinions are largely informed by national stereotypes (e.g. the ideas of heroic post-war reconstruction of the state or technical development). Nation-wide stereotypes are more influential than region-specific ones.

Opis:
SARS-CoV-2 is a pathogenic viral infection that was identified in Wuhan, China, in late 2019. After just a few weeks, further viral infections have also been detected in other countries. In March 2020, the World Health Organization declared a pandemic, and in April 2020, numerous infections and deaths were reported in almost all parts of the world. The dynamic development of this virus infection and the COVID-19 disease caused by it have led to restrictions and new regulations being introduced in almost all countries to halt the exponential growth of infections and protect the health and life of citizens. The most common restrictions are the closure of places of education, culture and work until further notice, breaks in tourist traffic and forced social isolation. The new restrictions make many people fear the possibility of illness and death, economic crisis, and the uncertainty of the future, but they also adopt attitudes of rebellion or rejecting the possibility of danger. Some may try to take advantage of the new circumstances to make money from trading in rare goods. The pandemic, and in particular the experiences and behaviours that accompany it, has led to the disintegration of existing rules within society while introducing new rules that are necessary to achieve new goals: survival, avoidance of infection and maintenance of social order. The research was conducted among students from Poland and Iraq. The aim was to determine different ways of adapting to the anomie (according to Robert Merton’s theory) among students. The research was conducted from the 30th of March to the 16th of April 2020. The research tool, a survey questionnaire, was distributed via the internet. A total of 502 students participated in the survey. The results showed that conformist behaviour is the most common among the respondents, while deviant ways of adaptation to new conditions were noticed only incidentally. Students from Iraq followed rules that can help to reduce the infection more than students from Poland. Medical students much more practised the principles associated with quarantine and personal hygiene than by students of other faculties. Moreover, these principles are more often observed by residents of large cities and rarely by those living in the countryside.

This article examines some of the opportunities and challenges associated with using archived qualitative data to explain macro-social change through a biographical lens. Using examples from a recent research project on family change in Ireland, I show how working across qualitative datasets provided opportunities for generating new explanations of social change by ‘reading against the grain’ of established social science narratives and tracing innovation in social practices. I also discuss some of the methodological challenges associated with working across datasets and how we addressed them in the study.

Processes of selection of schools have already constituted the object of the Doctoral Dissertation of Professor Ryszard Borowicz, prepared under a scientific supervision of Professor Zbigniew Kwieciński, and also of his numerous books and papers published throughout his whole scientific career. One of the leading concepts applied in the projects carried out by Professor Ryszard Borowicz was the meritocratic concept. Application of that theory in the explanation of phenomena taking place in the contemporary education system has been subject of critical analysis. Besides, the possible directions of studies have been proposed concerning the selection of schools, including the university-level of education. A number of questions have been raised worth answering, especially in face of dynamic transformations taking place in the Polish society that are somehow a consequence of belief in education that was supposed to create stratification mechanisms enabling promotion of positively selected individuals, according to the relation “merit-award”. With consideration for the Professor’s achievements, and for current indicators, some phenomena have been presented that currently exist in the system and are directly related with the problem of selection of schools.

Opis:
Wiskitki is a small town situated 6 km from Zyrardów. It has been treated as a laboratory for studying the mechanisms and directions of social change in a small town. The social and geographic mobility of Wiskitki's young generation in relation to their education level and education aspirations were the study's subject. Several data sources were used: Wiskitki 7-grade school's archives covering the period from 1925 to 1960, interviews, participant observation, date stemming from the pupil's essays on a given topic and several others. The factors influencing the change in the upward social mobility patters were the changes both in the sphere of institutions, infrastructure and economic relations, as well as in social consciousness. The increased demand for qualified labor force in the neighboring bigger town and the new bus line between Wiskitki and Zyrardów are the examples of the first group of factors. The change of particular professions' social prestige illustrates the second group of factors.

Opis:
In the article, the author applies to the analysis of modernization his general theory of social becoming as put forward in a monograph published by Polity Press, Cambridge (Sztompka 1991), and a textbook of sociology of social change published by Blackwell, Oxford (Sztompka 1993). This very general model of social becoming has a number of implications. The author proposes to put them together in a synthetic picture by means often theses. Modernization in this view is the result of choices and decisions undertaken by human actors − individual, collective, and authoritative. It produces various routes of modernization and its multiple outcomes. Modernity is a multidimensional condition − economic, political, cultural, religious, mental − where various dimensions may appear in multiple configurations and permutations. Modernization is not a value or a goal per se but the means, an instrument for making people happier, letting them live full and decent lives. More precisely, it means the access of more and more members of society to the growing opportunities for the realization of their human potential. Modernization must be linked with the tradition of a given society, its unique social memory, cultural heritage, religious or ideological creeds. They provide intellectual and moral resources for modernizing action. Modernization incorporates antagonisms, conflicts and struggles resulting in contingent, variable routes and outcomes. The next phase of modernization may well be witness to conflicts and fights over its own deeper, humanistic meaning.

Opis:
The article presents a specificity of dynamic research based on panel studies. On the basis of chosen examples, including long-term Polish nationwide research, the field of panel studies application as well as difficulties in the implementation of the studies were indicated. The main purpose of this publication was to present some aspects of methodical research tools of panel study projects, that are conducted both by individual researchers and research teams. Basing on examples, panel studies diversified in terms of scope, measurement techniques, sampling and problem assumptions, were presented. The article starts with the research conducted by Ryszard Borowicz at the turn of the sixties and seventies, that includes one typical study cycle of Nicolaus Copernicus University – the research coveres the whole education cycle. Then, the article describes Polish Panel Survey POLPAN research that has been conducted since the end of the eighties. Besides determining individual trajectory of Polish fortunes, the research introduces innovative approach to social structure in a dynamic perspective. The Social Diagnosis panel studies project, of which the first round of studies was held in 2000, was in turn presented in this article with a special emphasis on defining and sampling methods, as well as mechanisms of dealing with the sample’s “mortality”. The last example included in the article, presents the research conducted by Zielonogórski Center (Ośrodek Zielonogórski), in which the panel studies method is particularly applied to the field of pedagogical studies. The comparison of such different projects, in particular studies from the seventies and contemporary studies, allowed to indicate several points differentiating research tools, and in addition, opportunities that are created by using modern technologies in the area of data collection, reaching respondents and dissemination of study results.

Opis:
Intelektualizm etyczny, w Sokratejskiej myśli – w odniesieniu do zagadnień moralnych – utożsamia episteme (knowledge – wiedza) z arete (maximum potetnial – cnota).
Ethical intellectualism, in the Socratic thought, equates episteme (knowledge) with arete (maximum potential – virtue). According to this moral hero, knowledge, is a precondition for virtue, that is, moral and useful behavior in all our activities. So, if people choose evil, that means that they do not exactly know what in the specific situation is good. His argument aptly exemplifies the following sentence that it is one and the same thing to know what is just and to be just. Unfortunately, the moral condition of modern societies gives the lie to beliefs of the ancient eulogist of morality, and quite clearly shows that "to know what is just" and "be just" is radically different spheres of human existence. Living in harmony with moral values, which are the foundation of the survival of humanity is endangered, is slowly falling into oblivion. One of the important reasons for this alarming moral condition of societies is permissiveness – in other words – a common tolerance on attitudes failure, and often violations of moral norms in modern societies. A deep-rooted permissiveness, which could be the source of social change, can lead to social anomie.

This article contributes to the discussion on societal changes and their impact on communication disciplines by focusing on public relations and its role in contemporary global society. The thesis is that the public relations profession has been affected by contemporary societal changes that challenge the existing body of knowledge and its underpinning theories. To understand the role of public relations in 21st century global societies and pursuing future public relations theorizing, the authors argue it is paramount to comprehend which factors at macro, meso, and micro levels lie beneath the substantial changes in today’s global society. The article presents and reflects on four major macro trends of contemporary global society and concludes with suggestions for future directions for public relations scholarship and practice that are rooted in the concept of community and the idea of being part of and at the service of a community.

All African cultural heritages suffered suppression when foreigners from the East and West came to dominate and introduce hitherto unknown lifestyles, technologies and skills. Like many African communities, the Midzi-Chenda community of coastal Kenya have struggled to maintain their heritage. This study examines the influence of modernity and its attendant social standards on the cultural heritage of the Midzi-Chenda. The study was carried out with the aim of identifying the cultural heritage values that are keys to addressing critical issues that affect coastal communities in Kenya and Africa. Sources for this study include oral histories, focus group discussions, interviews, documented information, and the author’s personal experience as a member of a Midzi-Chenda community. The insights here may be applied to tackle crucial challenging issues such as drug abuse, human trafficking, gender-based violence and types of radicalization in a vibrant changing society.
