Opis:
The last part of Ben Sira’s reflections on the activities of his contemporary physicians and the medicine of the time contained in Sir 38:1–15 is devoted to the attitude of the medical practitioner when healing the sick person (38:12–15). The pericope has a concentric structure with the attitude of the physicians towards God at its centre (38:13–14). The frame verses are devoted to the attitude of the sick person (38:12) and the sinner (38:15) towards the physician. According to the sage, it is not enough for a suffering person to turn to God alone asking to restore their health (Sir 38:9–11), but they should call on a doctor to help them recover (38:12a). The sick person needs a doctor’s help (38:12b). The Greek text emphasises that one should not be afraid of a doctor because God created them (the Hebrew version omits this argument; see 38:12a). Therefore, physicians are desired by the Lord and, like all creatures, God has also assigned them a specific task. However, physicians cannot rely solely on their knowledge and skills while healing a sick person. They should ask (pray to) God to allow them first to make the correct diagnosis (as explicitly stated in the Hebrew version), and then to heal their patient. The last verse of the pericope (38:15) poses many difficulties, which are reflected in numerous interpretations of its content. According to the analysis made in the article, it does not contain a negative image of a medical practitioner because its main message is the link between the cause of illness and sin (traditional perception of illness expressed in the Old Testament based on the principle of retribution). In Sir 38:12–15, as well as in the entire reflection on the contemporary medicine (38:1–15), Ben Sira made an excellent synthesis between this field of science and Israel’s faith in the divine Physician.

During a global health crisis, a country’s borders are a weak point through which carriers from countries with high morbidity rates can enter, endangering the health of the local community and undermining the authorities’ efforts to prevent the spread of the pathogen. Therefore, most countries have adopted some level of border closure policies as one of the first steps in handling pandemics. However, this step involves a significant economic loss, especially for countries that rely on tourism as a source of income. We developed a pioneering model to help decision-makers determine the optimal border closure policies during a health crisis that minimize the magnitude of the outbreak and maximize the revenue of the tourism industry. This approach is based on a hybrid mathematical model that consists of an epidemiological sub-model with tourism and a pandemic-focused economic sub-model, which relies on elements from the field of artificial intelligence to provide policymakers with a data-driven model for a border closure strategy for tourism during a global pandemic.

It has been suggested that the church on Sir Bani Yas island, dated to the seventh–eighth century, originally had a tower rising over its south-eastern room. This would be a unique feature as other hitherto known churches in the Gulf dated to the early Islamic period did not have towers. One of the arguments for the existence of the tower has been the increased thickness of the northern wall of the south-eastern room. However, close examination of the remains reveals that the increased thickness of this wall is in fact related to the rectangular apse of the chancel. Other arguments used previously to support the claim that the church had a tower are critically assessed in this paper, which concludes that the Sir Bani Yas church had no tower and that its chancel had a rectangular apse, yet another architectural feature it shares with other early Islamic Gulf churches.

Sir Gawain and the Green Knight
Opis:
The article presents a short comparative analysis of two versions of the English ro mance in verse Sir Gawain and the Green Knight – the original text from the 14th century and its modern translation by J.R.R. Tolkien. The Middle English source text uses a North-West English dialect and is an interesting example of a late revival of alliteration originally rooted in the old English tradition. Alliteration as a formal organizing principle is combined with end-rhymes which complete the structure of the poem; this is both sophisticated and rare. Tolkien’s modern rendition of the romance recognizes and respects its dominant structural elements and attempts to recreate all the formal aspects of the text as adequately as possible. The modern version, while being a translation, acquires the semi-authorial signature of Tolk ien, both a translator and scholar who creates a highly competent and historically informed rendition. The translator’s craft is particularly visible when Tolkien’s ver sion is juxtaposed with the Polish translation by Andrzej Wicher. The linguistic and cultural distance between Polish and English is larger than the distance between the original and the modern rendition in English, and, as a result, the translation of Andrzej Wicher manages to reproduce only a limited number of alliterations and hence loses many artistic features that were essential components of the original text.

Sir Roger Scruton nie aprobował zmian w przestrzeni miast, które zapoczątkowane zostały w XX wieku przez modernizm. W swych pismach z zakresu estetyki, w publicystyce i działalności społecznej konsekwentnie upominał się o przywrócenie „prawdziwego” miasta, w którym decyduje wspólnota mieszkańców. Celem tekstu jest prześledzenie jego argumentacji i wykorzystanie jej do wyjaśnienia chaosu przestrzennego w Polsce. Z wielowątkowej twórczości Scrutona ograniczyłem się do trzech elementów związanych z krytyką modernizmu, rolą architekta i problemem tożsamości miasta i jego mieszkańców. Miało to doprowadzić do pokazania konserwatywnej recepty na odmianę sytuacji w mieście. Polega ona na oddaniu miasta wspólnocie mieszkańców, odbudowie przestrzeni publicznej (traktowanej jako dobro wspólne) i upomnienie się o pewne normy, które w interesie wspólnoty ograniczą leseferystyczne podejście do przestrzeni – to zasadnicze kwestie, których realizacja może wpłynąć na odmianę polskiej przestrzeni.
Sir Roger Scruton disapproved of the changes to urban space initiated by modernism in the 20th century. In his writings on aesthetics, his journalism, and his social activism, he consistently argued for restoring the ‘real’ city, in which the community of inhabitants decides. This text aims to trace Scruton’s argument and use it to explain the spatial chaos in Poland. From Scruton’s multifaceted work, I limited myself to three elements related to the critique of modernism, the architect’s role and the problem of the city’s identity and its inhabitants. This was to show a conservative way to change the situation in the city. This conservative remedial programme consists of giving the city back to the community of inhabitants, rebuilding public space (treated as a common good) and insisting on certain norms which, in the interest of the community, will limit the laissez-faire approach to space, are fundamental issues whose implementation can influence the variation of Polish space.

This article presents numerical solutions of selected epidemic spread models in the Python programming language. The solutions were base on the SIS, SIR, SIRS and SEIR epidemic models. NumPy, SciPy and Matplotlib libraries were used for numerical solutions in Python.

Ben Sira’s teaching on medicine and healing in Sir 38:1–15 is divided into two parts: the first (38:1–8) deals directly with the medicine of the time (doctors – 38:1–3 and the medicines they used – 38:4–8), while the second focuses on the healing process (38:9–15). In the latter, the sage first focuses on the attitude of the sick (38:9–11) towards God and the role and tasks of the physician in the process of healing the sick (38:12–15). The article addresses Ben Sira’s teaching on the relationship of the sick man to the Lord (38:9–11). The sage, after positively evaluating and responding to modern medicine (a novelty in the Old Testament), returns in 38:9–11 to the implicitly expressed conviction found in the Bible that only God can restore health to a sick person – that He is the only physician. He therefore urges the sick person to turn to God. According to the sage, turning to the Most High (38:9a), prayer (38:9b), the rejection of sin and iniquity (38:10) and sacrifices (38:11) play an important role in the process of recovery. Sir 38:9–11 has a concentric structure with a call for a change in moral conduct at its centre (38:10). These are surrounded by appeals to turn to the Lord (38:9 and 38:11). According to Ben Sira, healing from illness is the work of God, so the sick person should make a conversion (abandon sin and turn away from evil) and renew his relationship with the Most High. According to him, conversion is crucial in the healing process – without it, the sick person cannot return to health and full strength. In this way, the sage expresses the Old Testament teaching about illness as the result of sin (retribution) and God as the only physician. What is new in Ben Sira’s teaching is the call to offer sacrifices for the recovery of health and healing from suffering.

Caleb is a secondary character in several episodes of the Exodus as well as the conquest of the Promised Land (Numbers 13–14; Josh 14:6-14). Praise of the Ancestors (Syr 44–49) contains a presentation of the biblical history of ancient Israel as the history of the covenant and a place of God's intervention. Sirach presents, according to his own criteria, the most relevant and positive characters of this history. Caleb in Sirach’s description (46:7-10) is a faithful scout, who, together with Joshua, in the face of the rebellion of the Israelites, bears witness to an exemplary trust in God and encourages the Israelites to follow his lead. His courage and faithfulness are rewarded by receiving an inheritance of the piece of land in the Promised Land, which then becomes the property of his offspring. In the brief account of Sirach, Caleb has become a timeless example of the wise man – a sage who lives according to the word of God and encourages others to take up this challenge.
Kaleb jest postacią drugorzędną, obecną w kilku epizodach eksodusu, a także podboju Ziemi Obiecanej (Lb13-14; Joz 14,6-14). Pochwała ojców (Syr 44–49) zawiera przedstawienie biblijnej historii starożytnego Izraela jako historii przymierza i miejsca interwencji Boga. Syrach, w oparciu o własne kryteria, przedstawia najistotniejsze i najbardziej pozytywne postacie tej historii. Kaleb w opisie Syracha (46,7-10) jest wiernym zwiadowcą, który wraz z Jozuem w obliczu buntu Izraelitów daje świadectwo zaufania Bogu i zachęca Izraelitów do pójścia za jego przykładem. Jego odwaga i wierność zostają nagrodzone otrzymaniem w dziedzictwa w Ziemi Obiecanej, która następnie staje się własnością jego potomstwa. W pochwale Syracha Kaleb stał się ponadczasowym przykładem mędrca – człowieka żyjącego słowem Bożym i zachęcającego innych do podjęcia tego wyzwania.

In his reflection on doctors’ work and the process of treatment (Sir 38:1-15), Ben Sira draws attention to the usage of medications (Sir 38:4-8). Many contemporary Jews were probably recalcitrant to use them as ancient medicine resorted to magic. Magic was also employed in the production of medications. The first part of the article synthetically presents the usage of medicines in ancient Israel on the basis of the Old Testament. Then a literary analysis and exegesis of Sir 38:4-8 is attempted. The present article takes into consideration the Greek version of this pericope, for it constitutes the canonical text of the Book of Sirach (the article nevertheless compares the Greek text to its Hebrew original). The pericope evinces a concentric structure (A – 38:4-5; B – 38:6; A’ – 38:7-8). The verses that frame the pericope refer to medicines (vv. 4–5 are devoted to the justification of their use while vv. 7–8 mention the reasons they are used for). The central part (38:6), in turn, focuses on the origin of medical knowledge. Ben Sira strives to persuade his fellow Jews to use medications as they are not related to magic and pose no threat to believers. It is God who created them, and they come from him. The sage refers in his argumentation to what happened in Marah (cf. Exod 15:25) to justify the use of medicines and their natural origin. Medicaments help cure diseases and afflictions and they restore harmony of creation, disrupted by disease and suffering (38:8). Their divine provenance is also corroborated by the fact that knowledge of medicine and medications was given to people by God (38:6). Hence, people should worship God for this great gift.In Sir 38:4-8 Ben Sira performs a perfect synthesis of contemporary medicine developed by neighboring (pagan) peoples with Israel’s faith (only God can cure a person but he does so through medications; medicine is thus a tool in his hands). The sage noticed the positive value and usefulness of medications but through referring to God and showing the divine provenance of medicine he dispelled any doubts the believers might have had concerning the use of medications to cure a disease.

Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie spotkań polowych na demonstracjach rolniczych, z udziałem rolników, doradców rolniczych, naukowców, przedstawicieli instytucji i podmiotów wspierających działalność rolników, przedstawicieli firm produkujących na potrzeby rolnictwa, jako przykładu działań podejmowanych przez Warmińsko-Mazurski Ośrodek Doradztwa Rolniczego z siedzibą w Olsztynie, służących budowie płaszczyzny do rozwijania w praktyce Systemu Wiedzy i Innowacji w Rolnictwie (AKIS). I Warmińsko-Mazurskie Dni Pola pozwoliły poszerzyć grono odbiorców w procesie upowszechniania innowacji rolniczych. Obok indywidualnego doradztwa świadczonego na rzecz rolników – właścicieli demonstracji, szkoleń praktycznych na bazie prowadzonych demonstracji oraz podsumowania wyników demonstracji, stanowiły dodatkową formę przekazu innowacji metodą demonstracji.
The popularization activity of voivodeship agricultural advisory centers has a long tradition. It consists in transferring innovations from the sources of their creation to the place of application, along with the dissemination of its effects. Agricultural demonstrations and demonstrations are commonly used dissemination advisory methods. The aim of the article is to present field meetings at agricultural demonstrations, with the participation of farmers, agricultural advisors, scientists, representatives of institutions and entities supporting the activities of farmers, representatives of companies producing for agriculture, as an example of activities undertaken by the Warmia and Mazury Agricultural Advisory Center based in Olsztyn, to build a platform for the practical development of the Knowledge and Innovation System in Agriculture (AKIS). The 1st Warmia and Mazury Field Days allowed to expand the group of recipients in the process of disseminating agricultural innovations. Apart from individual counseling provided to farmers - owners of demonstrations, practical training on the basis of conducted demonstrations and summing up the results of demonstrations, they constituted an additional form of transferring innovation by means of demonstration.

Wielka Wojna lat 1914–1918 postrzegana jest dziś głównie jako traumatyczne doświadczenie polityczne i militarne w skali uniwersalnej, dające początek wielkim przemianom w XX w. Powstające wówczas narracje były także wielokrotnie preparowane – w większym lub mniejszym stopniu – przez dziennikarzy, cenzorów, polityków i wojskowych. Sprzyjało to prowadzeniu skutecznej propagandy politycznej, jakże koniecznej w obliczu rozpoczętej latem 1914 r. wojny. Forsowana wówczas propaganda przybierała najrozmaitsze formy, często sięgające po jednoznacznie odbieraną symbolikę z pogranicza wojskowości i religii. Szczególnie widoczne stało się to w trakcie kampanii palestyńskiej gen. Edmunda Allenby'ego i w kontekście roli Świętego Miasta – Jerozolimy.
Today the Great War of 1914–1918 is seen – mainly – as a politically and militarily traumatic experience on a universal scale, which gave rise to great changes in the 20th century. Less often it is perceived as an individual, traumatizing or civic experience. We are not able - as confirmed not only by historians or sociologists but also psychologists – to "comprehend" the overall view of the reality of that time. We try to recreate it for better or worse based on various historical sources, and these largely reflected the personal attitude to events or its propaganda view. They were also prepared – in a larger or smaller way – by journalists, censors, politicians and military personnel. In the years preceding the outbreak of the Great War, many civilization achievements of the era were tested and introduced on a mass scale, such as modern media or fine arts in the services of power, nationalism skilfully controlled through the media. The turn of the twentieth century was an era of the mass press, and thus, faster transmission of transmitted information. This was conducive to the conduct of effective political propaganda – all the more necessary in the face of the Great War. It also took various forms. Often used were the explicitly associated symbols remaining at the interface between the military and religion. This became particularly evident during the Palestinian Campaign of Sir General Edmund Allenby.

The article is devoted to the presentation of Abraham in the Greek textof the Praise of the Fathers (Sir 44:19-21). Only 13 verses are devoted tothe patriarch, but his description carries a wealth of theological meaning.Sirach presents Moses as an ideal and a model to follow for himself, hiscontemporaries and all believers (cf. Sir 44:19b). First of all, he emphasizesAbraham’s moral and religious perfection (cf. Sir 44:20), which manifesteditself in his abiding by the Law (cf. Sir 44:20a) and respecting the covenantwith God, reflected primarily through the sign of circumcision (cf. Sir44:20bc). Abraham was completely loyal to God and proved his loyaltyduring a trial (cf. Sir 44:20d). Sirach stresses especially one’s attitude tothe covenant with God as the most important aspect of a believer’s life; inthis respect Abraham should be a model to emulate. In the final part of the fragment the sage focuses on the result of Abraham’s faithfulness to God.The Lord promised him numerous offspring (cf. Sir 44:21cd) and an inheritance encompassing the whole Earth (cf. Sir 44:21e-g). Sirach emphasizes the special position of Abraham’s offspring among the nations (the latter will receive blessings through the former; cf. Sir 44:21b). What is more, Abraham’s offspring will be elevated over other nations (cf. Sir 44:21d). What is particularly noteworthy in Sirach’s reinterpretation of Abraham is that the patriarch respected the Law and that the sage attributed Messianic features to him.

Opis:
James II inherited the throne from his elder brother Charles only because there was not any male heir. Even the Parliament wanted to exclude him from succession, that was the exclusion crisis of 1679-1681. The Tory propaganda published Sir Robert Filmer’s Patriarcha to argue for the primogeniture principle, i.e. for the James’s title to the throne. That work introduced patriarchalism in which overlap the concepts of family and society and the authority of a father and the monarch. Therefore the monarch as the father of the nation ruled over the society that was considered to be a great family. He demanded unconditional obedience from the society just as the father demands it from the members of his family. Since Sir Robert Filmer’s name was connected to James’s right to the throne and to the conservative royalist Tory propaganda, my incentive was to examine whether James himself applied patriarchalism and the Filmer’s concepts in his political writings. This is the law (norms) in books if we apply the terms of the law in effect to the past. However, the aim of this article is to compare these norms with the practice found in the James’s declarations, proclamations, and deeds. The result of this comparison would be the law in action. Thus, the aim of this comparison is to reveal patriarchalism in James’s writings and after that to examine whether any characteristics of it can be found in his deeds and decrees of his administration. I mean especially three deeds: his coronation, the cure of the King’s evil (scrofula), and the practice of giving mercy to victims. Among the decrees I mean particularly the decrees issued during putting out the revolts against his reign. In the first two cases he was successful, however, he lost the throne to William of Orange and was expelled from it.

Księgi biblijne przedstawiają wydarzenia z historii biblijnego Izraela interpretując je w kluczu teologicznym. Dotyczy to również opisu najazdu króla Asyrii Sennacheryba na Judę i Jerozolimę w 701 r. przed Chr. Konfrontacja ta znalazła nawet odzwierciedlanie w źródłach asyryjskich, które podkreślają potęgę Asyrii. Jednak przekaz biblijny uwidacznia niezwykłą interwencję Boga, który w tajemniczy sposób ocalił swój lud. Był to przekaz tak istotny, iż został przedstawiony w Starym Testamencie aż cztery razy: 2 Krl 19,35; 2 Krn 32,21; Iz 37,21 oraz Syr 48,21. Przekazy biblijne tłumaczą ocalenie Jerozolimy interwencją Boga, który działa poprzez swojego „posłańca” – anioła. Najpóźniejszy opis tego wydarzenia w Syr 48,21 wraz z kontekstem sugeruje własną interpretację tego wydarzenia. Anioł, przez którego Bóg działa w obronie swojego ludu może być zidentyfikowany w prorokiem Izajaszem, który ogłasza Boże orędzeie ocalenia, jako odpowiedź na modlitwę ludu.
Biblical books, while presenting events from the history of biblical Israel, interpret them in a theological manner. This principle also applies to the description of Sennacherib’s military campaign against Judah and Jerusalem in 701 BC. This campaign is even reported in the Assyrian sources, which underline Assyrian military power. The biblical narrative emphasizes an extraordinary intervention of God, who saves his people in a mysterious way. This divine intervention was so important that is was reported in the Old Testament writings four times (2 Kgs 19:35; 2 Chr 32:21; Is 37:21; Sirach 48:21). Biblical reports explains the rescue of Jerusalem by the intervention of God, who is acting by his “messenger” – an angel. In the latest description of this event, found in Ben Sira 47:21H, the sage from Jerusalem gives his own interpretation of the whole affair, which differs slightly from other reports. The angel, by whom God is acting, is identified with the prophet Isaiah, who announces the salvage of Jerusalem as an answer to people’s prayers.

The first part of the article synthetically presents the Old Testament Israelites’ attitude to doctors and their activities. It is an essential prerequisite for the depiction of the innovative approach to the issue proposed by Sirach in Sir 38:1-15. Subsequently, the translation of the text’s Greek version into Polish is presented and the pericope’s structure is divided into four parts: I. 38:1-3 – respect for the doctor, II. 38:4-8 – the value of medicine, III. 38:9-11 – the relation of the sick to God, and IV. 38:12-15 – the doctor’s role in treating the sick. The present article is devoted to the exegetico-theological analysis of the first part of the Greek version of Sir 38:1-15, that is of 38:1-3. Even though the article is based primarily on the Greek text of the verses, it takes into account its original Hebrew version as well. Sirach calls the believing Israelites to completely change their perception of doctors and their activities. He encourages his readers not to reject doctors but to treat them with respect and reverence, and, indirectly, not to ignore the doctor’s efforts meant to restore health to the sick one. The sage justifies his novel approach with two arguments. First, doctors were created by God and given the task of aiding the sick in their suffering. They are a mere tool in God’s hands, for God is the only Doctor that can truly heal a person (this aspect is emphasized more by the Hebrew than by the Greek text). Secondly, doctors deserve respect for even kings and dignitaries benefit from their service and treat them with respect and reverence. In 38:1-3 Sirach offers a perfect synthesis of Israel’s traditional belief in God, who is the only doctor able to heal a person, with the Hellenistic influence related to medicine and the people who dabble in it.
