Opis:
Any global phenomenon manifests itself differently in various countries and regions. Our idea is that for Russia the global crisis can be considered as the third phase of the long-term national socio-economic crisis, and for the important part of Russia, Siberia, even as the fourth phase. These phases are:• First, the crisis of economy, of ideology, of social relationships and of political system stemming from the Soviet times, having brought the crush of the state, some problems of which have been still unsolved;• Second, the crisis of the 90s, born from this crash and economic reforms, including the very crush of the integral country, very painful for common people, poverty, together with social pessimism and passiveness of people who were robbed by the hyperinflation and stagnation of the sectors, such as science and education, that had never been backward in the Soviet times and could perhaps serve as growth points for the new economy, if used and stimulated properly.• Third, specifically Siberian, extensive out-migration and depopulation, in the conditions when state economic policy is influenced by ultra-liberalism denying any state regulation, together with power hyper-centralization, which both tendencies, paradoxically united, lead automatically to concentration of everything in wealthy Moscow.• Fourth, the very global crisis itself

regional policy
Opis:
The regional development of Siberia faces some difficulties nowadays and they are thought to be the result of historical development. According to American authors, Clifford Gaddy and Fiona Hill (“The Siberian Curse”), as well as some Russian scientists, such problems stem from the period of Soviet abusive colonization of Siberia, or even earlier – from the period of monarchy. But it is essentially hard to realize the situation of Siberia from the perspective of Moscow, let alone from abroad. It is also difficult to imagine the huge differences in territorial proportions, contrasts in Siberian regions, and distances between cities. So it is not acceptable to use non-geographical, dot methods in solving regional problems of Siberia. In fact, the regional problems are very complicated and multilateral, and we should study them with an open mind. Development of Siberia, the Eastern and Northern territories, was not something special in Soviet times. It was based on the whole country large-scale development plans and strategic objectives

Opis:
The ranking of cities according to their individual intellectual (innovative, organizational, creative, central, etc.) potential is actual and important for geographic studies in the epoch of post--industrialization. The results of such ranking can be applied in various aspects and directions of regional policy. The very idea of such ranking seems to have been first formulated in France in the early 1960s. The research concerned was aimed at solving the problem of hyper-centralization in that country through forming ‘metropoles d’equilibre’ in the periphery, to counterbalance Paris. The task was to find the French cities which were ready to fulfill this role. Later, we have used this idea to rank Siberian cities as to their administrative potential. The important innovation in methodology was introduction of a principally new index, crucial just for Siberia (although maybe less important in Europe). This index is the distance from the nearest comparable or obviously more significant city

MIGRATION

Opis:
The mass voluntary migration from Polish lands began in the second half of the 19th century. An important stage in the tsarist policy of settlement inSiberiawas the  so-called agrarian reform according to the project of premier Pyotr Stolypin. From 1905 to 1914, 5580 peasants migrated from theprovinceofLublin, 1485 from theprovinceofChełm, and over 3000 from other provinces of the Kingdom. Compared with this number, the resettlement movement from the provinces on theVistula, that is territories ethnically Polish was utterly negligible and did not exceed 1% of all migrants. In the resettlement historiography the best known is the “migration rush from the Dąbrowskie Mining Region”. Among the causes for the “emigration rush” from the Region, apart from obvious stagnation in the coal industry and associated redundancies and deterioration of living conditions, the desire to possess one’s own plot of land is most frequently quoted, and most likely not without a reason. The outbreak of World War I arrested the resettlement behind the Ural.    The movement continued until 1916. Before the October Revolution started, approximately 300,000 to 500,000 Poles were to be found inSiberia.

The article is devoted to the history of entrepreneurship in Siberia of early 19th – early 20th century. Historiography of entrepreneurial activity in the largest region of Russia is poorly studied. The theoretical basis of the article is the theory of modernization. The main method of research is historiographical analysis. The article is based on the study of a wide range of scientific literature on the history of entrepreneurship in Siberia. The paper highlights the periods of study of entrepreneurship, the main approaches, research problems. As a result of the study, the authors come to the conclusion that nowadays there are both a large number of publications and genre diversity, and an increase in the source base of the breadth of research problems, the search for new methodological approaches. As a result of the work done, historians managed to accumulate a large amount of factual material, study the history of entrepreneurship in the region, cover almost all aspects of the life of Siberian entrepreneurs.

Opis:
Treatment of “bone” is one of the striking and original components of the culture of ancient population of Siberia. The heyday of bone carving is here the epoch of ancient nomads (the 1st millennium B.C.). In the Scythian time, on the territory of Southern Siberia and in contiguous regions, several centres of artistic bone carving production were formed. These centres differ in the following indications: peculiarities connected with utilization of different kinds of natural materials, specificity of cutting out raw material and also of types of bone carving-blanks, originality of the technique of artistic carving; influence of treating other materials upon artistic carving, originality of ornamental trimming of articles, peculiarities of artistic images and compositions, and, at last, toning of carved articles up and down, coating them with paint or incrustation. Among them the highest number and degree of variability of representations display Altai, upper Ob region and Tuva. In some centres the influence of other techniques (e.g. bronze casting or horn carving) are noticeable. In each of the historical epochs the treatment and skillful utilization of horn reflected the main changes and priorities in the culture and economy of a particular population. In the period in question the well-developed cattle-breeding, as well as the increase of mobility of the population of the 1st millennium B.C. made it possible for nomads to masterfully use horn, as corroborated by elements of the harness, arms and waist-belts.

The paper presents the results of the academic museum Project called Anthropological reinterpretation of the Siberian collections from the Ethnographic Museum in Cracow that came from Polish 19th-century explorers of Siberia financed by the National Programme for the Development of Humanities (2016–2019). Four major topics of investigation among the collections’ source communities have been presented: Benedykt Dybowski’s collection from Kamchatka, Konstanty Podhorski’s collection from Chukotka, Nenets’ clothing donated by Izydor Sobański, and two cult figurines which reached the Cracow Museum from Jan Żurakowski. The presentation reveals the assumptions of the in-field museology: the method combining the anthropological perspective with museology elements. Furthermore, the digital repository www.etnomuzeum.eu/syberia is discussed; it is the one that makes the collections and research results available online. The paper may prove of interest to professionals curating collections, culture researchers, historians, cultural anthropologists, art historian, conservation services, museology theoreticians.

Siberia
Opis:
The multi-ring Popigai structure formed in the crystalline rocks of sub-polar Siberia is the largest one in the Asia territory. The complexity of its structure, the weak erosion and numerous, deep geological drillings determine its uniqueness when compared to the rocks found in Chicxulub, Vredefort and Sudbury. Shocked rocks, mainly gneisses, have fluidal texture, heavily brecciated garnets and opaque minerals. The presence of high- and low-temperature impact melt breccia types called tagamites have been described from the crater. Breccias of suevite express variability from low-glassy types to highly porous structures similar to tuffisites. The part of melts or glasses with vesicles, crystallites and clasts can be interpreted as pseudotachylite. Mineral globules and corroded clasts can be found in impactites. Feldspars are transformed into maskelynite, and quartz into lechatelierite. Sometimes quartz shows the ballen structure and has nebulous contacts. Graphite, ilmenite, and pyrite are dispersed in tagamites. The secondary mineralization of zeolites occurred in vesicles.

The present study reviews the taxonomy of Late Jurassic–Early Cretaceous oysters from the Northern and the Subpolar Urals (Western Siberia) and northern East Siberia. Previous studies have documented 10 species from the genus Liostrea (L. delta, L. cucurbita, L. praeanabarensis, L. anabarensis, L. plastica, L. gibberosa, L. planoconvexa, L. siberica, L. uralensis, L. lyapinensis), and 3 species from the genus Gryphaea (G. borealis and 2 species in open nomenclature). Liostrea gibberosa, L. planoconvexa, L. uralensis, and L. cucurbita are transferred in this study to the genus Pernostrea. Furthermore, two new species of Pernostrea are described: P. mesezhnikovi sp. nov. and P.? robusta sp. nov. Liostrea siberica is transferred to the genus Praeexogyra. Liostrea praeanabarensis and L. anabarensis are attributed to the subgenus Boreiodeltoideum (genus Deltoideum) as well as L. delta sensu Zakharov (1966) which is described here as new species Deltoideum (Boreiodeltoideum) borealis sp. nov. The similar shell morphology of the genera Deltoideum and Pernostrea provides a basis to establish the new tribe Pernostreini trib. nov. in the subfamily Gryphaeinae. Three species are recorded for the first time from Siberia: Nanogyra? cf. thurmanni, “Ostrea” cf. moreana and Gryphaea (Gryphaea) curva.

This is a report on the situation of the first several dozen priests (“ксендзов [ksendzov]”) resettled in the village of Tunka in Eastern Siberia in the spring of 1866 in order to isolate them from other exiles on whom – as claimed by the authorities’ knowledge – they had a “detrimental influence (вредное влиянье [vrednoye vliyan'ye])”, strengthening their “religious fanaticism”, and for a tighter control over them. The document is presented in its original, Russian version, but is preceded by an introduction in Polish by Eugeniusz Niebelski, who tells about its history, content and the village of Tunka itself. The report in question was prepared by Major Mikhail Kupenkov (formerly Kupenko) following his earlier inspection in Tunka.

Mammal remains from the Middle Jurassic (Bathonian) Berezovsk Quarry on the south of Krasnoyarsk Territory, West Siberia, Russia are referred to Docodonta indet. (two edentulous fragmentary dentaries) and Mammalia indet. (a single−rooted tooth). The dentaries exemplify a unique combination of plesiomorphic characters found among stem mammals only in Docodonta and Morganucodon: well developed Meckel’s groove, trough for postdentary bones with overhanging medial ridge and a diagonal ridge on the floor separating the “adductor fossa” and angular facet, and well developed and posteroventrally directed pseudangular process with facet for the reflected lamina of angular. Both specimens share with Docodonta the prearticular facet placed ventral to the angular facet and extending posteriorly to the mandibular foramen. This facet is not present in Morganucodon, where the prearticular lies medial to the angular. Medial position of the prearticular in Morganucodon is connected with the compound jaw articulation in this genus, in which a rudimentary articular−quadrate mandibular joint is present medially to the dentary−squamosal joint. In Docodonta indet. from Berezovsk Quarry, Haldanodon and Docodon the position of the prearticular ventral to the angular is connected with the position of the articular complex ventral to the dentary condyle. Such articular complex could not function as a mandibular joint and postdentary bones in Docodonta were used solely for sound transmission. One specimen from Berezovsk Quarry shares with Morganucodon a groove for replacement dental lamina, which was not reported previously for Docodonta. Mammal remains from Berezovsk Quarry are among the oldest occurrences for Docodonta, the first record of Jurassic mammals for Siberia, and only second such record for the whole of Russia.

The aim of this article is to demonstrate how the experience of suffering and trauma can be presented in biographical narratives. This topic, although increasingly present in literature and the media, often remains discussed in a cursory manner: in order to comprehend trauma and its consequences, one needs to consider the sum of an individual’s experience, that is, their entire life. This article examines such a comprehensive biographical account of Henryk Truskowski, recorded on 23 May 2017 in Olsztyn by Anna Maciąg as part of the project Remembering the trauma of the Second War in the spoken accounts of the inhabitants of Warmia and Mazury.

Opis:
Humic substances are ubiquitous in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Humic acids (HAs) actively interact with organic and inorganic components of lake sediments. This interaction depends on the molecular structure and elemental composition of HAs. The presented research focuses on the investigation of the composition and molecular structure of humic acids isolated from lakes located in the Lena Delta in the Russian Arctic. The findings of the research are needed to estimate the potential capacity of humic acids to bind microelements, particularly toxic metals, in stable compounds. Surface sediment samples (0–10 cm) were collected from 8 lakes by Van Veen grab during the summer period of the “Expedition LENA 2019”. We analyzed elemental composition of the HAs samples. The results showed that the studied HAs of lake sediments are characterized by low nitrogen content and prevalence of aliphatic fragments in their molecular structure. Furthermore, it was found that the studied humic acids are less mature, showing mineralization processes dominant over humification, and have relatively low potential to complexation compared with soils of the Lena Delta as well as lake sediments of territories with more boreal climate conditions.

The main issue of the study was to determine the importance of the climate factor for migration flows in Russia, as well as its impact on the intraregional level. The article also discusses the possible prospects that global warming may bring to Siberia. According to the results, the climate factor does not have a crucial influence on the decision to relocate in Russia, but it remains one of the most important, along with economic, social and political factors. At the regional level, the climate factor is less important than the agglomeration factor and others. The impact of global warming has now affected the overall increase in temperatures in Siberia, which is not yet sufficient to generate additional migration flows.

Published sulphur and oxygen isotope age curves for the late Neoproterozoic-Early Cambrian time interval have been based on studies of sulphate intervals of the East Siberian salt giant. We report here on sulphur and oxygen measurements for sulphate dispersed in, or forming laminae in, the rock salt deposits in all Lower Cambrian basins of East Siberia. Sulphur isotope data for 26 samples of Lower Cambrian anhydrites from East Siberia range from +22.6 to +34.5‰. No difference was observed between different suites and between samples taken from anhydrite intercalations in rock salt and from water-insoluble residue in rock salt. Oxygen isotope data for 25 anhydrite samples range from +12.4 to +17.8‰, and thus δ18 O values have a smaller range of variation (5.5‰) than δ34 S (11.8‰) over the entire set of Lower Cambrian anhydrites. The great δ34 S variability observed in the Lower Cambrian of Siberia seems to reflect mixing of sulphates coming from the ocean and due to the riverine input. The lowest δ18 O values may indicate the input values from both the sources, whilst the highest value may result from isotope exchange between SO4 2- and water. Our results combined with data provided by previous workers could indicate a clear stratigraphic trend in δ34 S values, with a remarkable fall of ca. 9‰ in δ34 S value during the earliest Cambrian and then a slight rise in δ34 S values in the younger part of Early Cambrian. However, if only the highest values are taken, the measured values are compatible with seawater δ34 S 3 30‰ during the entire Early Cambrian. Sulphur isotopic composition of sulphate minerals did not be come heavier from the sulphate stage to ward the chloride stage.

Researchers in social memory are bound in their work to include the relations occurring between the memory of local communities and the official historical policy of the state. When events retained and exposed in the local memory are persistently passed over in silence, distorted, falsified or removed from the public sphere by means of decisions taken by the censorship, the remembrance of these events takes on the character of concealed memory, which integrates the given social group tightly (e.g., the Siberians, the Silesians). The transformations which followed in Poland after 1989 (liquidation of the Censorship) formally introduced „commonwealths of memory” into the public debate; however, they affected the stereotypes and prejudices held by Poles only to an insigni' cant degree. The ideologization of the state policy of remembrance, which has been gaining strength for some time (among others, the amended act on the Institute of National Remembrance) practically makes it impossible for a free dialogue to function in the public space. If the official (state) remembrance imposes the way of understanding, interpreting and remembering past events and this under the threat of legal repressions, then there again we come to deal with its clash with unofficial (local) memory, in consequence of which the „bearers” of the latter may develop a sense of being excluded from the official historical narration. Such a situation not only hampers conducting studies among the stigmatized or excluded groups, but primarily requires from the researchers to be particularly responsible while interpreting the images of memory which are lived through by these communities.

Opis:
The first Polish voluntary settlers appeared in the area of present-day Vershina village at the beginning of the twentieth century. Despite functioning in isolation from their linguistic homeland, the inhabitants of Vershina still use their dialectal Polish, which displays a combination of various features of the Lesser Polish dialectal area. The speech of the inhabitants of Vershina also displays the increasingly stronger influence of the Russian language. Despite the relatively rich literature on the language of Poles in Vershina, its phraseology has not as yet been described. This article is an attempt to partially fill this gap by showing the state of this phraseology in the first decades of the twenty-first century. The study presents Polish phraseologisms preserved in the speech of the Poles in Vershina as well as the units which are a consequence of the influence of the Russian language on their dialectal Polish in the field of phraseology.

Opis:
After the defeat of the January Uprising, a hundred dozen of young Poles, mainly from the area of Lithuania, were exiled to Kurgan. The city authorities were not able to provide support for so many people. Most of the exiles did not receive government benefits. Only those who received money from their families were in a good position. In this situation, the Poles founded a “society against hunger and cold”, which later assumed the name of the Society for Mutual Assistance. The main purpose was to collect cash to help those who did not receive any financial help from home. The Society for Mutual Assistance had its own regulations, which forbade, among others, drinking alcohol, playing cards, indulging in any gambling, maintaining relationships with promiscuous women and most importantly marrying Russian women. The activities of the Society for Mutual Assistance were treated with indulgence by Mikhail Avenirovich Karpinski, the Mayor of Kurgan, who came to conclusion that the deportees engaged in their own organization would abide by the adopted regulations and thus there would be no misunderstandings between the Poles and the residents of Kurgan. It seems that the 27-year-old Michał Żaba, a graduate of the Medical Department of the Moscow State University, could have influenced M. Avenirovich Karpinski’s opinion. Inhabitants of Kurgan began to submit denunciations, at first of M. Avenirovich Karpinski’s indulgent treatment of Poles, and then levelling similar accusations at the governor of Tobol, Aleksandr Ivanovich Despot-Zenovich. In the end, the case was handed over to the general-governor of West Siberia Aleksandr Petrovich Khrushchev, and so an investigation began in 1867. Among the exiles, Michał Żaba suffered the most as he was not only found guilty of establishing the Society for Mutual Assistance, but also accused of making attempts to establish such organizations in Ishim, or Yalutorovsk. In other words, Żaba was accused of conspiring against the existing order in Russia. In the 1960s, Soviet historians treated the issue of the Kurgan investigation as an example of Polish-Russian revolutionary cooperation in Siberia. It seems, however, that the establishment of the Society for Mutual Assistance Society should be regarded as an attempt to revive the societies that were created by Polish exiles in Siberia in the period between the November and January Uprisings.

The article deals with the issue of repatriation of prisoners of war of the 5-th Polish rifle Division in the Minusinsk's County of the Yenisejsk`s province in the early 1920 's. After the conclusion of the of Riga peace treaty between Poland and Soviet Russia the repatriation procedure was started. At that time in the Minusinsk's County was 418 prisoners of war. There were prisoners of the Austro-Hungarian and German armies and the former lieges of the Russian Empire. Natives of the Russian Empire accounted for one third group of Polish prisoners of war, but among them were many representatives of the nobility, as well as persons who have received education before the war. The Prisoners of war were part of labour brigades in the Yeniseijsk`s province which were sent to the logging and working industrial enterprises. All of the prisoners of war were to be registered. Special Commission including the Soviet leaders of Polish origin, dedicated to setting of Polish nationality to persons who had no documents. During the registration, some of the prisoners of war were persecuted by the Cheka. The arrested prisoners were charged with voluntary service for Kolchak, counter-revolutionary propaganda. It was a violation of the Agreement of the repatriation between Poland and Soviet Russia. After the repatriation a small group of Polish prisoners of war remained to Minusinsk`s County.

This paper looks at the long-term process of making and shifting ethnic boundaries in Siberia. I focused on the interdependence of the state, border and ethnicity. During the colonisation of Siberia, the state border functioned as a shifting frontier. The border effect touched mostly indigenous people by keeping them in the radius of a tribute collection system. Later on a system of administrative clans was developed. The Soviet Union brought into the world a quasi-state structure of territorial autonomy for indigenous people and produced modern ethnic elites. Since the 1990s ethnicity has been a key political category and the process of negotiating ethnic boundaries.

The early evolution of salamanders, which are one of the three living groups of lissamphibians, is not well known. Both stem- and crown-group salamanders first appeared in the Middle Jurassic (Bathonian), but subsequently had different evolutionary histories: stem salamanders were thought to have gone extinct in the Late Jurassic, while crown salamanders persist to the present day. Here, I report the discovery of an indeterminate stem salamander in the Lower Cretaceous (Aptian–Albian) Ilek Formation of Western Siberia. This is new evidence that the most basal salamanders survived beyond the Jurassic–Cretaceous boundary and co-existed with crown-group salamanders during approximately the first 40 million years of the known history of salamanders. The recognition of stem salamanders in the Early Cretaceous of Western Siberia adds to the inventory of taxa that suggest this area was a refugium for various groups of vertebrates with Jurassic affinities.

The early ceratopsian dinosaur Psittacosaurus sibiricus from the Early Cretaceous of Western Siberia, Russia, is one of the most advanced and largest (up to 2.5 m) members of the genus. Here we present a description of ontogenetic changes in the long-bone histology of this species. Analysis of a growth series of femora demonstrates significant histological maturation during ontogeny, expressed by the progressive appearance of signs of bone remodeling (erosion bays, secondary bone formation), decreasing of vascularity, changing of the orientation of vascular canals from reticular to longitudinal, and appearance of parallel-fibred bone in the outer part cortex. These ontogenetic changes in the longbone histology of P. sibiricus are generally similar to those of another relatively advanced species, P. lujiatunensis from China. The basal P. mongoliensis from Mongolia shows less mature long-bone histology during late ontogeny (e.g., the late appearance of signs of remodeling and the predominance of reticular vascularization at later stages). We suggest that the earlier achievement of histological maturity is an evolutionary trend of the genus Psittacosaurus.

Opis:
Background. This article presents results of research about psychophysiological adaptation of children who migrated from the northern to the southern regions of Siberia. The purpose of this study was to create measures that can be used to promote health among migrants. Material and methods. We examined 157 children between the ages of 11-16. Roughly half (n=74) were child migrants, and the remainder (n=83) were children who lived constantly in region of southern Siberia. Psychophysiological adaptation was assessed by methods of Eysenck, Rogov, Belokon and Kuberger. Results. Assessment of parameters allowed us to reveal multidirectional results in groups of children. The questionnaire developed by Eysenck showed the predominance of the extroverted type of personality among patients, but emotional instability was more often recorded among child migrants (p=0.0007). Child migrants took significantly longer to complete psychological tests, including tests of attention (p=0.0042) and verbal logical thinking (p<0.001). Vegetative homeostasis was characterized by a higher level of sympathetic tonic initial vegetative tone (p=0.0172), hyper sympathetic tonic variant of vegetative reactivity (p=0.0377), and an altered type of hemodynamic reaction to the clinoorthostatic test (50% of cases). Conclusions. The high frequency of emotional instability, slower speed of logical thinking possesses, and sympathetic tonic orientation of vegetative homeostasis parameters are distinctive features of child migrants. Children with deviations in psychophysiological parameters are at high risk of developing psychosomatic pathology. Therefore, preventive measures are necessary to help promote health among child migrants.
Wprowadzenie. W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badań dotyczących adaptacji psychofizjologicznej dzieci migrujących z północnych do południowych regionów Syberii. Materiał i metody. Wyniki. Ocena wielu parametrów pozwoliła na ujawnienie wielokierunkowych wyników w grupach dzieci. Dane z kwestionariusza Eysencka wykazały przewagę ekstrawertycznego typu osobowości wśród dzieci obu grup, ale niestabilność emocjonalną częściej odnotowywano wśród dzieci migrantów (p=0,0007). Migranci spędzali znacznie więcej czasu na wykonywaniu testów psychologicznych: ilościowy wskaźnik uwagi (p=0,0042) i logiczne myślenie werbalne (p<0,001). Wegetatywna homeostaza charakteryzowała się wyższym poziomem wegetatywnego tonicznego napięcia początkowego (p=0,0172), hipersympatycznym wariantem tonicznej reaktywności wegetatywnej (p=0,0377), zmienionym typem reakcji hemodynamicznej na test ortostatyczny (50% przypadków). Wnioski. Wysoka częstotliwość niestabilności emocjonalnej, niski poziom prędkości myślenia logicznego, sympatyczna toniczna orientacja wegetatywnych parametrów homeostazy są charakterystycznymi cechami psychofizjologicznymi dzieci migrantów. Dzieci z odchyleniami parametrów psychofizjologicznych posiadają wysokie ryzyko rozwoju zaburzeń psychosomatycznych i dlatego konieczne jest wprowadzenie metod i środków profilaktycznych na rzecz promocji zdrowia.

Opis:
The period of the nineteenth century is particularly interesting, because it was then that many memories of the exile and the aforementioned trip to exile were created. Observations of Poles-exiles are very interesting because they contain a lot of information about, among others the relation of the Siberia population to the exiles, as well as the perception of reality by the exiles themselves. Interesting are also information on the contacts of exiles with the administration of the Russian Empire. Particularly interesting are the memories of brothers Ludwik Zielonka and Kornel Zielonka, who took part in the January Uprising, for which they were sent to Eastern Siberia. They both describe the hardships of travel, they cite situations with which they had contact. While Kornel feels great as a writer, Ludwik cites mostly dry facts. Both diaries have one more interesting property: they can be used to examine the way differences in the perception of the reality of exile are found by diametrically different brothers who are in very similar realities.

Since its inception, the 5th Siberian Rifle Division was led by Colonel [płk.] Rumsza who operated under the orders of Colonel [płk.] Czuma, the commander of Polish forces in Siberia. In the light of the examined documents, Colonel Kazimierz Rumsza appears to be a man with two faces. On the one hand, he was an excellent commander, proving his worth in the extreme war conditions. On the other, a violent officer who humiliated his personnel and got involved in shady financial ventures. He was never proven guilty of embezzlement. However, his very presence in the group of suspects stigmatised him among the officers. He won back some favour after the lost September Campaign. During World War II, Rumsza did not play any significant role in the Polish Armed Forces. After demobilisation, he settled down in London. On 1 January 1964, he was promoted to the rank of brigadier general [gen. brygady]. Kazimierz Rumsza died on 28 January 1970.

The article is based on a fragment of the diary of Władysław Zahorski, still in the manuscript, entitled “My memories” and rich literature on the subject. It was written down years later, therefore it should be analyzed with great sensitivity and it should be careful to formulate conclusions. The author of the diary was a well-known Vilnius doctor, cultural and social activist and the author of many works on the history and monuments of Vilnius. The article deals with the problems of exiles in Ufa, observed from the position of a child from the intelligentsia family from western Krai. The author came from a family, whose social position and material status were definitely better than those Poles who were subjected to forced exile in post-January realities. In the diary it can be found the unknown and valuable information, that complements the current state of knowledge about the life of exiles of this part of Siberia. In addition, it creates a cognitive perspective concerning the exiles in the consciousness of a generation of insurgents’ children in 1863, to which Władysław Zahorski belonged.

This article analyzes the views of six French scholars in terms of the relationship between Hyperborea and Russia. They are in chronological order: M.-A. Baudrand (1682), S. Pelloutier (1740), N. Freret (1744/1753), J.S. Bailly (1779), P.H. Larcher (1802) and M.-N. Bouillet (1826). The theses of these researchers were largely dependent on F. Clüver (1616). These erudites were concerned not so much with Russia as a Hyperborean country, but with the geographic location of the Hyperborean ancestral homeland. Consequently, their analyzes had almost nothing to do with Russia. Only some areas of Russia (Nowa Zemlya, Western Siberia) and territories beyond its borders (Greenland, Spitsbergen) were indicated without emphasizing the connection between Russia and the „chosen people” of Greco-Roman antiquity. In this way, in the science of that time, data that was considered scientific at the time was clearly separated from ideological and propaganda data. The links between Hyperborea and Russia were pointed out only by P.H. Larcher (1802), following the opinion of J. Rennell (1800). This was in the first phase of the so-called Napoleonic Wars. Russia was already involved in the conflict with France. It can therefore be said that in these circumstances, linking Russia with Hyperborea, i.e. a kind of ennoblement of the Russian Empire, could have had a certain political subtext. On the English side, it was a kind of indication of the high position of the ally in the hierarchy of European powers. On the other hand, for P.H. Larcher as a Frenchman defeating the armies of Hyperborean Russia is a prestigious victory over an opponent covered with a halo of centuries-old glory. However, both for French scholars who wrote earlier and those who wrote after the fall of Napoleon, the link between Russia and Hyperborea was of little importance. They were engaged in science, not propaganda. These erudites only pointed to the fact that certain areas, which in their time or belonged to Russia, could have been inhabited in the distant past by peoples referred to as Hyperboreans. Russia, on the other hand, was for these scholars only synonymous with a country of tough people, hardened by the harsh climate. Such a Russia has also become a partner of European countries and one of the undisputed European powers. Deeper connections between Russia and Hyperborea were undoubtedly important to Russian patriots, becoming the basis of a romantic legend about the genesis of the tsarist state. The foundations for this legend were laid by Byzantine historiography, whose representative was Nicephorus Gregoras.

Opis:
In the thirties a concept of a Siberian literature and novel, revealing not only an aspirational but a descriptive character as well, emerged on the quarterly published “Sybirak”, a periodical connected with Piłsudski’s supporters. To a great part it concerned fictional literary works which did not concentrate on the Polish martyrdom but presented Siberia as an ordinary geographic land with unlimited natural and economic values. Such a literature was meant to stop readers from associating Siberia with the martyrdom of Polish citizens. The concept of a Siberian novel included literary works of different artistic values and genres the action of which took place in Siberia. This very paper is devoted to this concept.

This article proposes an analytical model for research on religion, based on elucidation of three aspects of religious phenomena: institutional, organisational and experiential. Those three aspects transform each other: religious experiences can lead to establishment of religious institutions, while religious organisations can initiate and manage religious experiences. Theoretical inspirations are taken from works that combine philosophy and anthropology with cognitive approaches. Ethnographic examples are based on fi eld research in the Republic of Altai (Russian Federation) on cult of nature and activities of shamans and in the Transcarpathian Ukraine among adherents of the Catholic Church of Byzantine Rite.

Whereas the moipho-forming influence of the wind is obvious in the area investigated, the role of the wind is important only in respect of grain size distribution and is not an important factor in detemiining in quartz grain abrasion size.

The defeat of the January Uprising caused the Russian repression against the polish society. One of the hardest punishments was an exiled to Siberia – the place which was known as an uncivilized land with an extremely adverse climate. Among the exiles can be find as well as women. Part of them were penalized for their politician activity against Russian administration. They frequently acted as the conspirators, couriers involved in the struggle for independence. The second group of women were, the most frequently, the wives of the exiles, however there were as well as the daughters and the mothers. The aim of the article is to present the women’s journey in Siberia according to the memories of Jadwiga Prendowska and Maria Morzycka. First of them was penalized due to her independence activities, whereas the second one was sent in Siberia as a voluntary companion of her husband. The article is concerned on the similarity and the diffrences between these two women and their experiences of the journey to exile.

Opis:
The paper examines the protagonists of the Polish prose written in the 20th century and at the close of the 19th century: the novel Anima Vilis by Maria Rodziewiczówna, two texts by Wacław Sieroszewski: the novel Na kresach lasów (At the Edge of the Woods) and the short story W matni (In a Snare) as well as the novel by Igor Newerly Wzgórze błękitnego snu (The Hill of the Blue Dream). They are connected by the fact that their plot takes place in Siberia, and, additionally, plenty of opportunity opens up for their protagonists. Siberia is depicted in a way that is distant from the presentations showing it “as the biggest prison in the world” or hell to which Poles are deported. It is described as the land of great  opportunity, open for everybody who wants and can work. The main characters are not exiles—presented in a martyrologic and Romantic manner—but active, hard-working people. The characters from the novels by Rodziewiczówna and Newerly have a lot in common with the main hero of The Life and Strange Surprizing Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, in contrast to the protagonists by Sieroszewski from the above-mentioned works, who, when they found themselves on “the desert island”, which is the Yakut village lost in the taiga, do not perform the roles typical of Robinson. Important for the problems discussed in my paper is the second volume of Defoe’s novel: The Farther Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, where Siberia is portrayed as being colonized by Russians. In this process of colonization, willingly or not, also participate other protagonists of the texts discussed in this paper.

The present study summarizes the data on the continuous stratigraphic sequence of foraminiferal assemblages from the Volgian deposits of the south-east of Western Siberia. Microfaunal analyses of 650 core samples from 18 boreholes of Volgian deposits were performed. Eighty two foraminiferal species, identified from the samples, were combined into the Volgian assemblages. On the basis of these assemblages, four biostratigraphic units were established in the range of foraminiferal zones and foraminiferal beds with characteristic species. These biostratigraphic units correspond to the upper part of the Kimmeridgian/ lower part of the Volgian, the Middle Volgian (lowermost and uppermost beds), and the Upper Volgian. A detailed biostratigraphic analysis of the Volgian beds was carried out, which enabled a correlation scheme to be developed for major regions of Russia. West-Siberian foraminiferal assemblages were correlated with those of Europe and North America within the Panboreal Superrealm. The species composition of foraminiferal assemblages was analyzed, and correlatable species ere established. This provided an opportunity to correlate coeval strata from Western Siberia, East European (Russian) Platform, northern territories of Siberia and Arctic Islands, Canada, Spitsbergen and England. The possibility was established for correlating Volgian-Tithonian deposits of the Panboreal and Tethys-Panthalassa Superrealms through the Dnieper-Donets Basin where faunas of both southern and Boreal-Arctic types are met.

To solve the question concerning the age and extent of the latest glaciation in northern Eurasia, several geological investigations were carried out. This paper describes work done on the North Taymyr ice-marginal complex on the Taymyr Peninsula in north central Siberia. The initial remote sensing work aimed to survey fieldwork localities and to acquire a regional geological overview. A Landsat 5 Multispectral Scanner (MSS) image was interpreted, both visually and by computer-based techniques. The ice-marginal zone is clearly visible on the satellite image and it was possible to distinguish spectrally different ground-types. In total, seven ground-types have been discerned and they are described and discussed. A geological interpretation of them was made after combining the initial results with the information gained from ground-truthing, which included sedimentological and morphological fieldwork. It is necessary to take topography and associations of classes into consideration when interpreting the final map, since the identification of some ground-types is not univocal.

Opis:
Danian and Selandian successions in western Siberia are rich in calcareous benthic foraminifers. The assemblages with a constant systematic composition that have the widest lateral occurrence are distinguished as foraminiferal zones. The Brotzenella praeacuta Zone was established in the low-carbonate, clayey beds that form the transition from the Gankinskaya Suite to the Talitskaya Suite. These transitional beds are assigned to the Danian. The calcareous benthic foraminifers in this zone occur mainly together with agglutinated forms. The zone is traced along the areas of the largest subsidence of the Mesozoic-Cenozoic basin, principally in depressions. The transition from the Cretaceous to the Palaeogene is represented by a continuous succession, in which the Danian deposits escaped from erosion and were found to contain the B. praeacuta assemblage. In Danian rocks with a shallow-marine facies (near Beryozovo and in the Ust’-Tym depression, Fig. 1), the Bathysiphon nodosarieformis - Glomospira charoides assemblage occurs. It is dominated by primitive forms in addition to more advanced tests (mainly Late Maastrichtian relic species). The overlying Selandian (Middle Palaeocene) foraminiferal assemblages are assigned to the Talitskaya Suite. The Ammoscalaria friabilis assemblage is widely spread and is represented mainly by agglutinated quartz-siliceous forms. Beds with these species are attributed to the Ammoscalaria friabilis Zone, which can be correlated with beds in the East containing Cyclammina coksuvorovae. The Cibicidoides proprius assemblage is known from the lower and middle beds of the Talitskaya Suite in Transuralia, the Omsk Depression and more south-eastern areas; the species of this assemblage are characteristic of the Selandian.

The article is an attempt to re-enactment the unknown part of Maria Sieroszewska life. She was a daughter of Wacław Sieroszewski (1858–1945), the Polish man who was exiled to Siberia and Arina Czełba-Kysa (1860–1886), an Yackut woman who came from Wierchojańsk. Maria was a half-orphan. When she was a five-years-old-girl, her mother died. When she was sixteen years old, her father came back to Poland and left her with his friends in Czarist Russia. Maria grew up in the area that contained three cultures: Polish, Russian and Sakha. Her life exemplifies the dramatic fate of children whose parents were from two other countries (mother was from Asia, father came from Europe) in that time.

The article deals with the problem of the diseases suffered by Polish political exiles in Siberia, as well as the associated treatment methods and circumstances (the role of doctors, hospitals, aid from other Polish citizens and the local population). We learn from the preserved diaries, journals and letters that the exiles would fall ill both during the murderous march to Siberia (thousands of kilometers crossed on foot, harsh winters, malnutrition, disastrous hygienic conditions in the sleeping quarters) and in their places of forced settlement. The exiles fell victim to epidemics (typhus, cholera, smallpox, scurvy) and other diseases, some of which unknown to European medicine. Further on, we learn about Russian hospitals whose gruesome conditions only accelerated the death of patients (dirt, stench, spoiled food, lack of care and medications, killing the sick in order to rob them). The worst of all those facilities were military field hospitals (victims dying of terrible flogging, the highest mortality). Polish exiled doctors, much better educated and prepared for the profession than Russian doctors, were often the only ones in various parts of Siberia who were able to cure many of the diseases and even fight epidemics. They would conduct extensive medical practices, treating their compatriots mostly without charge; they also helped many Russians and ethnic peoples (e.g. Benedykt Dybowski, Wacław Lasocki). Conventional methods of treatment, mentioned by the exiles throughout the 19th century, included: bloodletting, causing diarrhea, vomiting and sweats, as well as applying skin-irritating patches or medicines based on herbs and rectified spirit. In the paper, we also learn about non-conventional methods of healing. Where there were no doctors to be found, we discover the secrets of folk medicine. We explore with admiration the moods and attitudes of Poles in the face of serious diseases - the extraordinary solidarity between the exiles, their self-sacrifice and willpower (incessantly caring for the sick).

Opis:
A stem-group brachiopod, Oymurania gravestocki Ushatinskaya gen. et sp. nov. is described herein from the middle Atdabanian-lower Botoman Stages (-Cambrian Stage 3) of the Siberian Platform. The fossils were extracted from limestone beds of the Emyaksin, Perekhod, and Pestrotsvet formations as assemblages of disarticulated orthoconic to cyrtoconic porous shells in apatite preservation. The originally organophosphatic shells of Oymurania are externally similar to mitral sclerites (ventral valves) of the stem-group brachiopod Micrina, although no sellate-like sclerites, nor differentiated subapical area with apophyses were recognised in our material. The range of Oymurania shells with sub-central to posteromarginal apex is similar to that of ventral valves ofMickwitzia. Oymurania is also characterised by the system of radial and orthogonal canals open in pairs or triplets in small depressions or indentations of growth lamellae in the outer shell surface. The orthogonal (Micrina-Setatella type) and radial (horizontal setigerous tubes) canals are widespread among the early Cambrian stem-group brachiopods, such as Micrina, Mickwitzia, and Setatella. In addition to these canals, Oymurania exhibits a well-developed acrotretoid columnar microstructure, also known from Setatella. A broad subapical platform in cyrtoconic shells (presumably ventral valves) of Oymurania is interpreted homologous to the deltoid area in mitrals of Micrina and pseudointerarea/interarea in ventral valves of Setatella/paterinid brachiopods. Except with probable cell imprints and openings of orthogonal canals, no morphological differentiation was, however, reflected by the shell interior of Oymurania gravestocki. Being closely related to tannuolinids and mickwitziids, Oymurania complements the picture of diversification of the early Cambrian stem-group brachiopods that occurred in parallel with radiation of paterinids and other crow-group brachiopods on the Siberian Platform and worldwide.
